Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Tuesday, October 29th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. Law enforcement are conducting a large-scale search of the Metropolitan Detention Center, and officials say several violent incidents were tied to contraband brought into the Brooklyn Federal Jail. WNIC's Charles Lane reports. The Bureau of Prison says the operation was pre-planned and there was no active threat.
Starting point is 00:00:34 They said that the search involves other law enforcement agencies. Mike Antone is a paralegal who is in regular contact with detainees there. He said he got a message as the search was getting underway. Everybody's thrown down on the ground, handcuffed, taken out, completely strip-searched. Nine people were arrested at the facility last month for murders and prolonged knife fights. The jail has had many high-profile. defendants, including Sean Diddy Combs, who is being held there now. In other news this morning, it's been weak since any measurable precipitation hit Central Park.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Yesterday marked 29 days without any rainfall in the city. That's the second longest streak since 1869. John Murray is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He says Central Park, an official measurement location, could beat that all-time records set a century ago. There's potential for records here in terms of driest octobers on record through the driest month of all time. The city went 36 days without measurable precipitation in 1924. If the street continues, this month will be the only month without rainfall since officials began tracking in the first place. Dry weather can quell mosquito populations, thank goodness, and the spread of weeds, but it'll also mean a higher risk for wildfires and dollar fall.
Starting point is 00:01:59 leaves. Taking a look now in baseball, the New York Yankees are on the verge of getting swept by the LA Dodgers in the World Series. The Yankees lost 42 last night in the Bronx in their first home game of the series. The Dodgers lead the series three games to none. L.A. just needs one more win to claim themselves as champions. The Yankees will have another chance in game 49 in the Bronx. That's at 8 o'clock. No major league team has ever come from behind a 3-0 World Series definition. it. Fifty-three with clouds right now. We do have a slim chance of late afternoon showers, partly sunny and 64 today, and then tonight another slim chance of showers. And then after that, some patchy fog by midnight, mid-50s for lows.
