Welcome to NYC now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Monday, October 30th.
Here's the morning headlines from David First.
The corner of Halsey and Academy in Newark has been renamed Sakia Gunway after the teenager who was killed in the city in an anti-LGBQ hate crime.
WNET's Jenna Flanagan has more.
It's been 20 years since 15-year-old lesbian,
Sequia Gunn was killed in downtown Newark.
And Valencia Bailey,
Sequia's best friend who held Sechia as she died,
says she knows Sequia is beaming with pride and happy.
And that's just the start.
I keep saying it, it's just the start,
but that's not right there from the beginning,
that's going to make sure she's here on this earth forever.
Valencia says it's not just enough to know Sekea's name,
but also to know her story
so that another senseless LGBTQ hate crime does not happen again.
The NYPD says they're searching for a woman who allegedly slapped a protester
and made an anti-ethnic statement during the pro-Palestinian protest on the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday.
A video posted to social media shows the woman repeating several expletives before slapping a man in a crowd of people.
The police say the 31-year-old man declined medical attention at the scene.
The NYPD also says they arrested a 26-year-old man
during the protests for putting up graffiti.
The 50th anniversary of the Village Halloween parade is tomorrow in Manhattan.
Artistic director, Gene Fleming, has been working long hours to get ready.
It's not like other parades.
This is a parade about spirit, creativity, and so it's very exciting in that sense
because it's a celebration of the individual imagination, but within the most creative city on earth.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to march up six that.
If you want to march, you have to be in costume and can enter at Canal and 6th Avenue.
The parade steps off from Springs Street at 7 p.m.
The Jets came out on top after a wild finish in yesterday's Jets' Giants Showdown.
Jets quarterback Zach Wilson and his team initially had a tough go onto offense until two impressive
throws and two clutch field goals allowed them to walk off the field as winners.
The four and three Jets kicked a 35-year-old.
yard field goal on the final play of regulation and then added a 33-yarder with six minutes left in
overtime as they staged an unlikely comeback in a defensive struggle to stun the Giants 13 to 10.
Well, looking at the weather, lots of rain this morning, 55 degrees, there's a heavy rain and fog.
We're going to be dealing with some rain off and on through the morning hours, then cloudy this afternoon
with a high in the low 60s.
Tonight, mostly cloudy, a low of 42.
