Welcome to NYC now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC.
It's Friday, October 6th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Mayor Adams says his trip to Latin America is not funded by taxpayers,
but WNYC's Elizabeth Kim reports that's not exactly the case.
Before he embarked on a four-day tour of Latin America,
the mayor tried to head off any scrutiny over the cause.
of his trip.
I'm paying my own way, and you know my rule, my dime, my time, don't whine.
But a significant cost comes from the security detail that always travels with the mayor.
City Hall won't say how many NYPD officers are accompanying Adams, but experts say it could
be anywhere from six to 12.
City taxpayers will be on the hook for their airfare, lodging, meals, and overtime.
And the mayor isn't paying for the entire trip, which includes a visit to a dangerous jungle
crossing near Columbia. According to his office, the Mexico portion is being paid by a nonprofit
led by business and civic interests. The Bronx District Attorney says she's committed to making
sure home daycares in the borough are safe. This as daycare operator, Gray Mendez, and one of her
alleged accomplices, went to court yesterday after their indictments. They've been charged with the
fentanyl poisoning that killed a one-year-old and landed three other children in the hospital. D.A. Darcell
Clark explains her state of mind.
Our sorrow is matched only by the outrage because these babies were used as shields to protect a
narcotics operation.
Investigators say they found fentanyl in a closet with children's toys and under a trap
door beneath where the kid slept.
Mendez's attorney says she did not know about the drug operation.
New York Public Radio, WNYC's parent company, has laid off 20 employees and is ending its two podcasts,
ending two podcasts, more perfect, and LaBerega, as it tries to plug a budget gap.
The company says the cuts represent about 6% of its workforce, and NYPR's president and CEO, LaFontaine-Oliver,
recently wrote staff about looming layoffs because of sharp declines in membership and sponsorship revenue.
The union sag after represents hosts and reporters and others.
said it's devastated by the cuts.
