Welcome to NYC Now.
Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC.
It's Tuesday, September 12th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
A federal judge is reopening negotiations in a case that could overhaul how the NYPD responds to protest.
After the police officer's union opposed a settlement reached just last week.
The NYPD agreed this month to change its approach to protest,
after those who sued said police violated their rights amid the 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
Legal aid attorney, Cori Stoughton, says she's confident the settlement protects both protesters and officers and will ultimately be approved.
I do not think that the PBA's objections can derail this really important settlement.
The Police Benevolent Association says the new approach could endanger officers.
The union has until the 29th of this month to say in detail,
why it opposes the deal. An MTA maintenance supervisor is out of work after investigators uncovered
an apparent operation fencing stolen goods out of the back of a New York City transit construction trailer.
W.1C. Charles Lane explains. The MTA Inspector General says two workers were observed accepting stolen
goods from what their report refers to as homeless people. The workers then handed over cash.
According to the report, one transaction appeared to go sideways when a supervisor accepted stolen goods before brandishing a knife against the throat of the cellar near Times Square during rush hour.
The only stolen items investigators who were able to identify were two cases of beer.
The MTA says one worker was fired and another is awaiting discipline.
Their names have not been released and it is unclear if any criminal charges are coming.
New York Jets fans are reeling after star quarterback Aaron Rogers got hurt after just four snaps in his debut with the team,
needing to be carted from the sideline with an ankle injury.
Rogers missed the rest of the game against the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium last night.
Multiple reports this morning say it's feared Rogers Tour and Achilles tendon,
which could mean he would miss at least several games.
The bill's Leonard Floyd sacked Rogers, who sat on the turf where he reached down at a
his leg before trainers came onto the field. The Jets still won the game. The bills turned the ball over
four times, allowing the jets to tie the game and win on a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown in
overtime. Final score, 2216. 70 and partly cloudy now. Patchy fog out there this morning,
otherwise mostly sunny and a high of 83 today. Shows and thunderstorms tomorrow could be heavy at
times. Thanks for listening. This is NYC now from WNYC. Be sure.
