It's Monday, September 16th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
NYPD gunfire hurt three people and one of their own after police say officers fired their weapons yesterday
in a Brooklyn subway station while trying to arrest a fair evader.
NYPD chief of department, Jeffrey Madreys, says officers followed a 37-year-old man
and they saw walked through the Sutter Avenue L-trained subway station gate without paying.
Matri says officers tried to tase him twice.
He wielded a knife at them, and they drew their guns.
They fired multiple rounds, and the mail goes down.
They're able to handcuff him and subdue him.
While they're subduing him, one of the officers realized that he's hit as well.
Bullets hit two bystanders, including a 49-year-old man who police reporters in critical
condition. Police say the wounded officer is in stable condition. Madre says the incident is under
investigation. Drivers who block bus lanes and illegally double park will start getting tickets
automatically on 20 more bus routes this month with the first 10 getting them today. WNMC's
Catalina Gona reports. Buses with cameras on 14 routes have already activated their cameras and started
capturing offenders in June. Violators will get warnings for the first 60 days.
days. Then, summonses will start at $50 and increase up to $250 for repeat offenders. The MTA says
buses go 5% faster on routes where cameras are activated. Meanwhile, collisions go down 20%. 10 more
bus routes will be added on September 30th. In other news this morning, the City Department
Transportation is celebrating the completion of a major safety overhaul at the George Washington Bridge,
improving travel between Manhattan and the Bronx. The project stretches from Amsterdam Avenue
in Manhattan to University Avenue in the Bronx. It adds a new bus lane that serves more than
68,000 daily bus riders. The redesign also adds a two-way protected bike lane to the room.
DOT Commissioner Edanis Rodriguez will officially announce the improvements today. That's at noon
at a news conference. 63 and partly cloudy now mostly sunny today and 77. And then tomorrow
patchy morning rush hour fog, otherwise mostly cloudy in upper 70s with a chance of overnight showers.
