Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Wednesday, September 20th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. Some state lawmakers are trying to return to Albany for a legislative session to address migrant arrivals. But WNYC's John Campbell reports, it's not looking good. A spokesperson for state Senate majority leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousin, says she has no plan. to bring her members back to the Capitol, at least for now.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Brooklyn State Senator Julia Salazar is among those who want the state to dedicate more money to helping migrants. She says she's more than willing to make the trip north to Albany. Anything that is required of us at this moment in order to adequately address these needs, I'm ready to do it. Governor Hockel says the state has put more money toward housing migrants. The state is already funding shelters in Brooklyn, Queens, and Harlem. New York City's Council is considering a series of bills targeting racism past and present. The lawmakers heard testimony yesterday on a plan to create the post of a school diversity monitor to address persistent segregation in the public schools.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Another measure would consider the removal of public monuments honoring former slave owners. Jennifer Jones-Austin served as chairperson of the city's Racial Justice Commission She says voters had approved three ballot measures in last year's election supporting anti-racism initiatives. The overwhelming number of New Yorkers just last November said they desire for the city, that we be committed to and actively engage in the work of bringing an interstructural and institutional racism. Other bills discussed in the hearing included a measure to mark the site of the city's first slave market and establishing a truth and reconciliation process. allowing members of the public to address the impact of slavery.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Brianna Stewart scored 27 points, and the New York Liberty beat the Washington Mystics 90 to 85 in an overtime thriller last night at the Barclays Center. It's the first time that Liberty have won a playoff series since 2015. They will advance to the, or they do advance to the semifinals of the WMBA playoffs, and will play the winner of tonight's deciding game between Connecticut and Minnesota. The semifinals begin on Sunday. My weather's sticking around, low to mid-70s for highs and cool nights in the 50s. Right now, 60 and partly cloudy today is sunny and 74 for a high.
