Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC Now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Friday, September 22nd. There's the morning headlines from David First. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn is criticizing Republican leadership for the stalemate on Capitol Hill that may lead to a government shutdown. House Republicans continue to be in the midst of a civil war. It's a civil war that is hurting the ability of the Congress to do the business of the American people and to solve problems on behalf of everyday American.
Starting point is 00:00:43 A faction of House Republicans rejected another defense spending bill for the second time this week. It's the latest sign that Speaker Kevin McCarthy may not be able to secure enough support to avoid a looming government shutdown. Congress needs to pass a full budget bill or a continuing resolution by October 1st to avoid a shutdown. A dozen people, age 16 to 22, have been indicted in connection with a series of violent incidents in the Bronx. WNYC's Samantha Max reports. The indictment charges alleged members of the five-slee crew with murder, robbery, and other crimes. Prosecutors say the group is responsible for 10 non-fatal shootings, the killing of an innocent bystander, and several car and phone thefts. In one case, prosecutors say they stole a parole officer's gun,
Starting point is 00:01:31 and used it later that day in a shootout. NYPD deputy chief Jason Savino says nine of the defendants are accused of firing guns two or more times. I can't put it any simpler. These are the shooters. The mass takedown is one of at least a handful in the last decade, when prosecutors have charged a number of people together in an effort to target groups who commit violent crimes. New Yorkers can now get an updated version of the COVID vaccine at some local pharmacies and clinics, and more will have the shots in the coming days,
Starting point is 00:02:03 but city health officials recommend calling ahead to find out if there are doses in stock, even if you're able to book an appointment online. Some New Yorkers say they've made appointments at chain pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens, only to have them canceled at the last minute for lack of supply. Irina Mantas said it took her four tries before an appointment stuck. I am obviously a highly motivated person when it comes to this stuff,
Starting point is 00:02:27 But I can imagine there being people out there who get really disheartened by the experience and end up just giving up. Spokespeople from Walgreens and CVS say there have been some cancellations because of delivery delays from manufacturers. Currently, 61 degrees, expecting partly sunny conditions today, a high of 71 tonight, mostly cloudy, low of 59 with showers overnight. Thanks for listening.
