Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Monday, September 23rd. Here's the morning headlines from David First. World leaders are attending this week's annual UN gathering in New York City. The City Department of Transportation says motorists should expect the slowest traffic of the year in Midtown this week. And it's just the start of a season of gridlock alert days. And yes, this week should qualify.
Starting point is 00:00:34 for a gridlock alert. The Transportation Department says average vehicle traffic speeds dip below four miles per hour during the General Assembly. Every weekday through Friday this week has been designated as one of the city's 20 coming gridlock days of 2024. The City Council will hold an oversight hearing tomorrow to discuss the best practices to prevent drownings at city beaches and pools. WNYC's Amanda Rousson has more. Three bills will be introduced after the hearing. One requires the Parks Department to create an online map for pool updates. Another mandates water safety materials for schools, including info on swimming lessons. The third bill pushes lifeguard training for high schoolers following this summer's
Starting point is 00:01:18 lifeguard shortage. The council will also vote to recognize May 15th as International Water Safety Day. According to the City Council, seven people died by drowning at City beaches this summer. The National Weather Service has issued a coastal water. flood statement for parts of New York City's shoreline today. The City Office of Emergency Management says inundation of up to one-half a foot above ground level may cause minor flooding of shore roads and properties in Manhattan and the Bronx between 11 and 6 in the evening. Officials say minor flooding is possible due to higher than normal tides, waves splash over, and the effects

Brianna Stewart scored 20 points and 11 rebounds for the New York Liberty in game one of the first round of the WNBA playoffs yesterday, and the Liberty never trailed in their 83-69 win over the Atlanta Dream. New York can sweep the best of three series with a win tomorrow in Brooklyn. Game three, if necessary, is Thursday in Atlanta. The Liberty are seeking their first WNBA championship after they fell in the finals last year.
