Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Wednesday, September 25th. Here's the morning headlines from David Furze. New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks plans to retire. He revealed the decision yesterday several weeks after the FBI seized his phones. WNYC's Jessica Gould reports. In a letter to the mayor, David Banks says he plans to step down at the end.
Starting point is 00:00:33 of the calendar year. Earlier this month, the FBI searched the Harlem home the Chancellor shares with his partner, Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright. Agents also searched to the Queen's home of his brother, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, Phil Banks. The investigation reportedly revolves around the youngest Banks' brother, Terrence, a former MTA supervisor who recently opened a government relations firm. Terrence Banks claimed to represent companies that have secured contracts with the city. All the bank's brothers have denied wrongdoing. There are at least four separate federal investigations of Mayor Eric Adams' administration or his campaign. And we'll hear more from Jessica Gould on this story later. It may be fall, but mosquito-borne illnesses are still circulating in the region and can be deadly. WNYC's Julia Hayward reports.
Starting point is 00:01:23 A New York state resident died this week after testing positive for eastern equine encephalitis virus. It was the state's first human case since 2015. The incident prompted state health commissioner Dr. James McDonald's to issue a declaration of an imminent threat to public health. This comes about a month after cases of West Nile virus began popping up in the city. Both the CDC and state health department recommend New Yorkers take precaution until the end of mosquito season, which runs through October. That includes spraying exposed skin with repellent and making sure window and door screens are installed in a good shape. Starting point is 00:02:10 bested the Atlanta Dream at Aracas Barkley Center last night by a final score of 91 to 82. Liberty star Sabrina Yunesco poured in 36 points to lead the team that is tied for a team playoff record. The Liberty will face the Las Vegas Aces in the next round, a rematch of last year's finals. Game one of the next series will be in Brooklyn. Right now, 62 degrees. It will be cloudy today. We have a chance of showers, especially expected in the afternoon, high of 68 degrees.
