Welcome to NYC Now.

It's Tuesday, September 26th.
Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Would you share a hallway bathroom with a bunch of your neighbors if it meant cheaper rent?
Mayor Adams wants to give more New Yorkers that option.
He's proposing rules that would pave the way for new single-room occupancy housing
at his dorm-style apartments where tenants
have their own studios, but they share kitchens and bathrooms. Tenant organizer Larry Woods directs
advocacy with the group Goddard Riverside. He says the unit could meet the demand for low-cost
housing, but the city has to make sure they meet a high living standard. Tenants in New York City
are desperate for anything remotely affordable, but will this really just lead to a reduction
and quality of life for poor people? Dorm-style units were common before the city banned new
construction in the 1950s. City planning says their proposal would limit rampant development and
uphold tenant protections. New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is rebuffing calls to resign after he was
indicted on federal bribery charges last week. Appearing before reporters in his hometown of Union
City, he read from a prepared statement without directly addressing any accusations.
I recognize this will be the biggest fight yet, but as I have stated throughout this
whole process. I firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will I be exonerated,
but I still will be the New Jersey's senior senator. The government accuses Menendez of giving
sensitive information to Egypt and trying to interfere with criminal cases. Federal prosecutors
say businessmen bribed him with gold bars, hundreds of thousands of dollars, and a luxury
car. A third person has been arrested in the Bronx daycare where a one-year-old died and three other
young children were hospitalized from opioid exposure this month.
Reni Antonio Parapareirares went to federal court yesterday and learned his charge of
conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death.
Investigators say they found packages of what appeared to be drugs as well as tools
used to prepare and distribute narcotics during a search of Paradeus's apartment.
Peretti is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted.
60 with clouds out there. We have a coastal flooding concern for late afternoon and into tomorrow morning.
