Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to NYC now. Your source for local news in and around New York City from WMYC. It's Tuesday, September 3rd. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill. A Brooklyn Public School located near the Gowanus Canal will begin classes as scheduled this week, despite chemical fumes in the building's basement. State officials detected the fumes at PS372 back in March. Julia Finnegan is the co-vice president of the P.S.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Parent Teacher Association, she says it's still not clear when the issue will be permanently fixed. This is a very large building. Jim happens there and art and music and dance. So, you know, I think this impacts not only pre-KK, it impacts the entire school community. The state says the fumes are likely coming from a spill at a neighboring property undergoing a cleanup. The city's Department of Education has installed new AC units to improve the air quality
Starting point is 00:01:02 in the school, it says. Officials also say the air is safe to breathe. A heads up for some Queens residents tonight. The city says it will spray for mosquitoes to reduce the risk of West Nile virus. The pesticide treatments will happen in parts of southeast queens, including Cambria Heights, South Jamaica, St. Alvin's, and other nearby areas. That'll be from 8.30 at night until 6 tomorrow morning. The Health Department advises you to stay inside during the spring. If you have to be outside, use water and soap to wash your skin, clothes, and any produce you're carrying after you get home.
