Starting point is 00:00:00 This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the galaxy. How would you react if I said that I'm not from Guildford after all but from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Beetlejuice? I don't know. Why do you think it's the sort of thing you're likely to say? Drink up, the world's about to end. Start listening to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, primary phase, available to purchase wherever you get your audiobooks. BBC Sounds and make sure push notifications are turned on in your phone settings so you can always listen to us having a natter. Hello! Welcome to Off the Telly. Plot twist. What shall we watch? Oh we've done that the wrong way round.
Starting point is 00:01:10 We have. Sorry. Hello! But I tell you what, we should leave it because that is the plot twist that we fucked up the title of our show. Loved it. Leave it. Leave it. That doesn't upset Loved it. Leave it. Leave it.
Starting point is 00:01:25 That doesn't upset me at all. I know. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha to hear all of your voice notes all about them. Thank you so much. We've had so many. It's so brilliant. I think this is like the most we've ever had. Yeah, loads and loads and loads. What do you think about plot twist? Oh my god, I love a good plot twist. Sorry, I can't speak. You can't see it. We can't. How are we going to get through the... This is turning out like we've never had a problem with our bonus episodes before, but the plot twist is that
Starting point is 00:02:03 Nat can't say the words plot twist so we're not going to get through the episode so we end it now. What do you usually guess a plot twist? Sometimes right, I can pick up a... Oh my God! Oh my God, what's wrong with us? Right. Do you usually guess a plot twist? Sometimes I do. I mean, it depends on how good they are but sometimes I'll be able to pick stuff up. Yes. But oh my god I love a good one.
Starting point is 00:02:51 I can't, I honestly mean this. It's not that I've not done my homework. I promise you I've been like oh what plot twist do I like? And erm... I... Oh, I haven't laughed like that for ages. Oh dear. Oh, I love laughing like that. My apologies for the time wasting. It's the best thing ever. Yes, so when I think about plot twists I can't really, I mean line of duty that had so many twists and turns. Oh god I love that. So it was brilliant but I can't sit here and go well the twist that I like most from, you know, neither can I. It's just part of the show isn't it and the excitement you go, I can't believe
Starting point is 00:03:45 that's just happened. Yeah. A bit like Black Mirror. Oh my god, yes. Every single episode had something in it that was shocking. Yeah. Have you seen the rumours? About Line of Duty.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Yeah, might be coming back. Well that's a plot twist isn't it? Yeah very much. Oh I can't wait because it's been ages. Wouldn't it be brilliant? Yeah. What would happen? Where would we be?
Starting point is 00:04:04 On the last series, H was revealed. Yes. But I kind of want to go, is he the real H or is he a cover? Oh my god, it'll be good. I can't wait for that. Really good. Oh my god, that'll be good. Exciting.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Yeah. I mean, Inside Number 9, basically every single episode of that is a plot twist, isn't it? Absolutely brilliant. And that's what I think. I think if the drama's really good or one of the crime shows is really good, of course it's just going to be loads and loads and loads of plot twists. I mean for me, I think the biggest plot twist that we have to mention is the fact that the whole last sort of two years of Dallas or whatever it was was a dream.
Starting point is 00:04:44 I think that was sort of the start of the... And Bobby was, was a dream. I think that was sort of the start of the... And Bobby was in the shower the whole time. Oh my god, can you imagine? Yeah. I mean there's been some quite big plot twists in EastEnders as well. Yes! When Cathy stepped out of a black cab, which was a complete secret, even to the cast, no one knew. Oh my god, really?
Starting point is 00:05:02 No one knew. And it was live and we were doing what we were doing. I was actually helping Kim give birth. Yeah? And we just couldn't believe what was happening. And we were like, you know, people were just talking and it's like, Kathy's back! And we were like, oh my god! Kathy Beale's dead! Oh my god!
Starting point is 00:05:19 But they made it that she's, you know, been... And so you didn't know until it was literally happening there and then? Yes, did not know. Oh my god, that's so freaky. And now. Wow. Yeah. That's exciting.
Starting point is 00:05:32 And then we had Who Killed Lucy Beale? Yeah. No one knew about that. So that was a huge plot twist because it was the son in the end, Bobby. Yes. He was like, pardon what? I couldn't believe it. Wasn't even in the running.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Yeah. Oh my god, it must be mad because yeah EastEnders there have been major plot twists. Major. That must be just really kind of scary thinking, oh my god, don't reveal it. Cindy came back from the dead? God. You've just got to keep it all quiet. Yeah. Oh, that's exciting, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:06:00 So that is quite, you know, lots of twists and turns going on there. One of my favourites is the first series of Prime Suspect, I'm sure I've talked about this before, where at the end, you know, the character who is the murderer, you know, but we're still like unsure, and then Jane Tennyson goes in to interview him, and then he's still being all his really soft, really nice self, and then he puts his head down, and then he lifts his head up, and then he just has a complete and utter personality change. And he is terrifying.
Starting point is 00:06:28 And I saw that years ago and I have never, ever, ever forgotten it. That just shows you what an impact it made. God, yeah, cause it's still, I saw it years ago and it's still in my head. Like all of it. Absolutely terrified me. Just his complete and utter change.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Scared me. Brilliant. I like you saying you're scared. Yeah. It doesn't happen often. Doesn't. Does it? Right, shall we hear about your favourite plot twists?
Starting point is 00:06:58 Hi, this is Jo. I'm really enjoying this podcast. I go to the gym every day and sometimes I don't wanna listen to music and I listen to you two. And we're all, we're kind of the same age and it just, all the things you talk about. They just think I'm absolutely crazy in the gym because I'm just absolutely creasing, absolutely creasing because I know exactly what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:07:22 But I wanted to come on because you were talking about plot twists and the plot twist for me, and it wasn't brilliant, it was really disappointing but I loved this series, absolutely loved the whole of the series and it was line of duty. And I don't wanna give any spoilers
Starting point is 00:07:41 but the person who was H, I was so disappointed that it was that, them. And it was almost like they left it open. It's a bit of a teaser. Are they going to bring it back? Because it kind of gave the impression that H's identity kind of changed each time. But the person that ended up being H it was just like why them? Why? I've watched like how many series I've spent so much time I've invested in it and I've loved it and we've been right on the edges of our seats every single episode and then the last episode and you're like you're literally about to find out who H is and it's them and you're just like oh after all of that.
Starting point is 00:08:27 I know what they, listen I know what you mean, I do know what you mean. That's how people felt though about the Bobby Beale situation because there were all of the, there were bets and it was who killed Lucy Beale and it went on and on and on and everyone had these people lined up and Bobby wasn't even in it and everyone was like how disappointing but that's the plot twist guys. You've not thought of that person. Yeah you haven't thought about that person at all and with Line of Duty I don't know I think that you just can't trust it can you? Because you genuinely, you don't know who. So I kind of think, oh my God, is there going to be, I still constantly think, is there another
Starting point is 00:09:09 H? Is it going to be Ted? In my head, I'm always like, is it going to be Ted? I know, it's Ted, don't you? You do, don't you? I love Ted. I love Ted. He's great Adrian Dunbar, isn't he? God, he's so good at it. So good.
Starting point is 00:09:19 So good. Yeah. Let's have another one. Hi guys. Loving the podcast and it's just nice to hear people talk about TV and it really stokes some memories, especially when Nasty brings up Only Fools and Horses because at the minute that's one of my go-tos. Plot twists. One of the biggest plot twists for me ever, and it might not feature on many radars, is when EastEnders 30th anniversary,
Starting point is 00:09:51 Kathy came back in a black cab and met Phil by the docks. I mean, that blew my mind. I was with a friend and I stood up and acted like, I don't know, the FA Cup thing had been won. It was amazing. What a plot twist. You know, for 15 years or however long we thought she'd been dead and it turned out she hadn't. It was delivered perfectly. So, so well. Yeah, couldn't believe it. And it was done so secretly as well. Incredible. Anyway, thanks. Bye.
Starting point is 00:10:28 See? An iconic plot twist. Yes. You can't forget the soaps. They do do things well. God, how much work does it take into, you know, keeping something like that secret? I would go as far to say, I think it's like anything, the smaller amount of people that know the lesser of a secret, it doesn't come out. I'm not being rude to people, it's just life. More people know you go, I've got something to tell you, but you can't tell anyone. It's a big secret. And that's sort of a Chinese whisper whisper whisper so things are kept
Starting point is 00:11:05 really quiet it was a bit like wonderful Anita Dobson coming back. No one knew about that. Oh my god. Would you have told anybody? Like say you got given a secret like that like oh my god don't tell anyone Anita Dobson's come back. Would you tell anyone? No you can't because you'd spoil it in the end. Oh my God. And you wouldn't want to be the, even if you didn't know it was you, you'd think, oh, I told someone.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Then you'd not trust that person, would you, or that person, so. Yeah. You know, when you have a secret, you should carry it and you should keep it. Yes. You should. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:41 I go straight to tell my mother and James. Should we have another one? Yeah, let's have another one. Hi ladies, James from Staffordshire here, just reaching out. I'm not sure if it's a favourite plot twist, but it's one that really sticks in the memory for me. And it was a Netflix series that was on maybe four years ago, 2021, something like that, called Behind Her Eyes. Now, I think it was real Marmite from people that I spoke to. They either loved it or they really didn't like it. But it really sticks in my mind as being one that had
Starting point is 00:12:24 such a twist at the end that it was one of those where for days afterwards I couldn't get the twist out of my mind which I suppose is what telly's all about isn't it having an impact on you and having an effect on you and yeah I would recommend that one to anybody who really fancies putting six hours into something that then turns out to be something completely different without giving too much away. I remember that. I don't.
Starting point is 00:12:53 What happened? I didn't watch it. It's from a book. And I started reading the book and then I either, for some reason, I didn't finish it. And then I saw that it was coming on the telly and I couldn't help myself. So I went on the internet and I read up the whole plot thing and spelt it for myself. Do you know I've just thought of one of the best plot twists on the television ever. Yes.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Only Fools and Horses. Which one? They spend the whole of their lives wheeling and dealing and scrimping and saving and they've got a pocket watch in the garage that's worth £7.4 million. Oh my god. Sorry, £6.2 million. Oh my god. And it's just sat downstairs in their garage.
Starting point is 00:13:41 And I don't know how, I don't even know if they knew it was in there. Yeah, do you ever see it or is it placed at all? You don't see it, you don't ever see the garage, but it is mentioned. Really? Years before, Del and Rodney have a conversation with someone and he's like, oh we've got all that stuff down there in the garage and he mentions this stuff down there, I'm absolutely sure of it. So I do think it's a planted thing. God.
Starting point is 00:14:08 One of the biggest plot twists on television. Imagine being a writer and having a plot at the end and you've got to like place it and just sort of, God. And see for me, I feel like that's where it should have ended as much as I love all the rest of them yeah I'm a huge fan yeah but once they find that yeah that's it then and then in Sotheby's and one passes out then the other one passes out and they've got just over three million pounds each and they walk into the pub again I can't talk about it. I'm really emotional. God. God. Brilliant.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Oh, let's have another voice note. I watched Breaking Bad probably about 11 years ago now. I still think it was the best plot twist. Reason being that you start the series feeling really sorry for this man and you're completely drawn into his story and like you you can kind of make excuses for him and you want him to do well and you want him to survive. By the end of it you hate him because he is nasty because he's been so dragged into the drug world that he turns into a horrible person and it's the only series I've ever watched where you're feeling
Starting point is 00:15:24 about a character changes that much. And I just think that was a brilliant plot twist. Have you not seen it? I have seen nearly all of it, right? All the way up until I have never ever seen the last series because I remember with Eva, my first one, I'd started like hemorrhaging and I was taken into hospital.
Starting point is 00:15:43 This is like before giving birth, right? Yeah, I was taken into hospital and then I had to stay in hospital having like bed rest and just not moving and I remember I have my laptop and I had a whole load of DVDs of Breaking Bad and I was putting them all in and I Just remember sitting in bed massively pregnant not moving and just watching Breaking Bad and then I gave birth Before the last series. Oh, so you had no time. I and then I gave birth before the last series. Oh so you had no time. So I've never seen the end of the bloody series but I just now know that he goes horrible but I've never ever flipping seen it and then from then on it's just been non-stop
Starting point is 00:16:15 kids and so I haven't sat down and watched it. I'm gonna have to watch the last series. I think you should. Have you seen it? No, no but they say it's one of the greatest television series ever made, don't they? Yeah, I think it definitely is because my parents... Sopranos, Breaking Bad, what else? They say, well, it's whatever opinion, but you know like Rotten Tomatoes or they're the two biggies at the top, aren't they? My parents started watching it and my mum was like, oh my god, couldn parents started watching it and my mum was like,
Starting point is 00:16:45 oh my God, couldn't get through the beginning because she was like, there's just too much swearing. But she stayed with it. And then my parents just absolutely loved it. Yeah. Witness the destruction of Earth, stumble upon the ancient planet of Magrathia and dine at the restaurant at the end of the universe.
Starting point is 00:17:05 Enjoy this dynamic remastering of the original BBC Radio 4 full cast serial, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. How would you react if I said that I'm not from Guildford after all, but from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Beetlejuice? I don't know. Why do you think it's the sort of thing you're likely to say? Drink up, the world's about to end. Start listening to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, primary phase. Available to purchase wherever you get your audiobooks.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Do you remember Lost? Oh God, yes. I love that. I used to love Lost. We've got a voice note about it. Oh fab. Oh, I just love a twist in a TV show don't you? I'd like to put forward my favourite and my least favourite twists ever in TV shows. My favourite being, and I think a lot of your listeners will agree with me if
Starting point is 00:17:55 they've seen the show, The Red Wedding in Game of Thrones. I don't want to say much more because for those who haven't seen it it's it's a big twist but my least favorite one I absolutely hated and ruined the show for me Lost the end of Lost I was absolutely gutted how they ended that show love you girls you know the Red Wedding right yeah only ever seen about the first 15 minutes of Game of Thrones and I was pregnant and I was like, oh my god, I can't watch this is too much for me. Didn't watch any of it at all. First time then that I ever like put it on. I was like flicking through the TV, put it on and it was
Starting point is 00:18:34 the red wedding. I'd not ever seen anything else of Game of Thrones. Suddenly the red wedding happens and out of the blue, everyone's getting murdered and stuff by somebody that you don't expect. And I was like, oh my god, I can't't believe all of this and that's the first I've ever seen of Game of Thrones. With this episode that you're talking about then was it sort of did you know everybody? I kind of had an inkling. Not you but I'm saying if you were an average fan had it been going for quite a while? Oh it had been going for ages and you knew everybody and it was just like woof. So it would be like Albert Square, everyone watching it and then just someone coming in who was completely unassuming and wiping out the whole of the...
Starting point is 00:19:11 Sonia coming in. It was basically Sonia coming in and wiping out everybody in the pub. That's what it would have been like. Wow. Yeah. Absolutely shocking. But then with Lost, oh my god, do you remember Lost? Yeah but I can't remember the end. I left it. Weren't they all on a... Plane? Yeah, they were all on a plane crash. I remember being angry though because...
Starting point is 00:19:31 It wasn't another dream was it? No but they were all on a plane or something. And I remember being angry because remember the fella that was in that room and he had to keep putting that code in all the time. I do remember. But it turned out that that actually didn't even count for anything, didn't it? And I remember my dad saying, see I told you all those years ago, because Dad lasted something like half of the first episode, and when the polar bear came out on the island, Dad went
Starting point is 00:19:52 this is absolutely ridiculous and he didn't watch any more. I know, but what happened at the end? I really can't remember. Weird. The end was just weird. Yeah, again, it's just sort of that not real thing. I think any show, it's really hard isn't it, but it's sort of if it's a dream sequence or we're never quite sure, oh you know there's a parallel universe or
Starting point is 00:20:12 oh it's not real, it feels lazy. It's like a cop out. But at the same time is it a cop out or is it just another version of something, do you know what I mean? Yeah it is like another version but I always get frustrated when you've really invested in a series and then you get to the end and you just don't like the plot twist or you don't like the ending. You say, oh I hate that. I know. Because you feel so like you've invested loads in it, don't you? I do know what you mean. My problem is I don't really invest a lot into anything.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Yeah. Is that everything in life or just TV? It's a lot of things. So I'll start a lot of things with great vigor and passion and then give up on it. What's something that you've started that you really thought was going to be like a big thing and then you just gave up and went off? Every year I do a Christmas puzzle, never finish it. I've got a bag of kind of cross stitching. Yes. Got all the stuff. Yeah. Started a fox for my great nephew. He'll be six this year. I did half an ear. Oh my god.
Starting point is 00:21:21 I've got a scarf that I started to knit again in a big lovely bag. I've got the wall. Yeah. Started knitting that for Mark I think the year we met so we've been together 11 years so. I've got this embroidered like cross stitch handbag and I bought that and I remember doing it so I had the wooden round thing and I was like embroidered across stitch and whatever it's called and it was to make this really nice like handbag and I remember sitting in the bed at the same time after I'd been hemorrhaging with Eva sitting in the bed watching Breaking Bad and doing it to make the handbag and it was only a couple of years ago that I finally thought just just get rid of it because you've still not
Starting point is 00:22:05 done it and I'm still like in the same, I've done like a little corner, that's all I've done and I've kept it for all these years because I thought you know you will do it, I haven't done it so I got rid of it a couple of years ago. Easily done though isn't it? Nice to have passions, I always say it's nice to have interests. Yes. Just need to finish one of them. Right let's have another voice now. Hello, my name is Gemma.
Starting point is 00:22:28 I live in Essex. Love listening to your pod. Came to it probably about three months ago. I work on my own in an office. I'm registered blind and find it easier to have my own office. But obviously it does get lonely and there's only so much radio you can listen to. So love that the fact that I can caught up on all your episodes and now wait until you drop a new one every week. So your call out for I have just finished watching yesterday, Playing Nice on ITV.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Now, well, even just the name of it, you know, definitely not playing nice. So yeah, that was a definite plot twist and I absolutely loved it. It does take a lot for me to be wowed by a drama now and that is definitely one of them. I did love it. I loved playing nice. Was that the James Norton one? Yeah. Yeah. And well, see like I was going to reveal the plot twist then. No, it was very, very good that. But even from the beginning, it was an unusual start to it. You go, oh my God, is that what, that's what's happened. Yeah. So it had quite a lot of surprise and shock throughout. No, enjoyable. I enjoyed that actually. Me and Mark watched all of that. So I do finish things. If they're four hours.
Starting point is 00:23:56 Anything after one series, hard to do. We did Peaky Blinders. I think we did series one, two, three. It was so good. Yeah. Didn't finish that. But when things like go on for such a long time, if you do sort of like just stop for any moment, it's difficult to get back in, isn't it? It is. You've got to keep going. Yes.
Starting point is 00:24:15 Push on through. Oh, last but not least. Oh, we might be fooling you. There might be another one. It might just be a plot twist right so my plot twist all i'm going to say is trevor jawdash and how i've never looked at patty all the same way again my god yeah anyway i'll let you think about that one i'm sure you remember it and it was like the talk of It was like the talk of anything, news and all sorts of things. It was quite shocking in the day. God, that was just so shocking, wasn't it? So shocking. And do you know something?
Starting point is 00:24:55 That's brought me a very, very deep memory, deep-rooted memory of a Saturday afternoon. Wasn't the Brookside Omnibus the longest thing in the world? Oh God, I can't remember. It was on a Saturday. It went on from about four o'clock till eight o'clock at night or something. It went on and on and on. But it was on a Saturday. I remember late afternoon, could have been earlier. Maybe it just felt like forever because I was a child. So probably about four till six six I suppose. And then everything used to start coming on overnight, blind date, generation game, big break, all
Starting point is 00:25:30 of that used to come on. But I remember hearing the music and thinking, oh it's a Saturday afternoon-ish. You've just brought a really deep, deep rooted memory there, so thank you. Oh, it was shocking that. I loved Brookside. Oh my god. It was, I really, really remember that and that whole storyline and god, it was so good. What a shame. Where did Brookeside go? I really, really don't know because it was good. Really good. Simbad.
Starting point is 00:25:57 Yes. Simbad. Yeah. Oh my god, Brookeside was brilliant. Really good. God, under the patio. Mark's at home having a look at some patio today. Is he? Hope he's not thinking of putting me under it. Well, I'll soon know if we don't turn up next week. Says you. James, could you keep digging deeper for the gerb? for the gerbals.
Starting point is 00:26:25 For the gerbals. Is it gerbals or guinea pigs? Guinea pigs. Do you think I'll ever get that right? No, my mother can't either. Why is that do you think? I don't know. Gerbals.
Starting point is 00:26:34 Maybe we're not used to saying guinea pigs because you normally have a hamster or a gerbil. A guinea pig is just like a big old thing, they're getting really big. Did you see the advert for Big Brother? Yes! With the guinea pigs. It's brilliant isn't it? I thought you! Yeah every time it's on we rewind it. Really good because clever. Oh my god Patsy going in. Well I've heard I've heard. More telly we need to watch. Oh my god. She'll make everyone really laugh. What a great energy in there. She'll have everyone meditating in there. Yeah be great. Oh I'm really laughing. What a great energy in there. She'll have everyone meditating in there.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Yeah. Be great. Oh, I'm watching definitely. Well, that's it for another bonus episode of Off the Telly. What shall we watch?
