BBC Sounds, music, radio, podcasts.
Hello and welcome to Off The Telly from BBC Sounds.
I'm Natalie Cassidy.
And I'm Joanna Page.
And this is the podcast where we have a good old catch-up about the telly we've been watching this week.
There is going to be a bit of swearing and there might be some spoilers, but who fucking
cares?
So we're back from our summer break.
We're back! Woo! Woo! Woo!
It's so lovely though to be back
to our normal episodes now, don't you think?
It is, isn't it? How was your summer?
Absolutely fab.
Ten days of lovely bliss.
Oh, did you?
Yeah, lovely holiday, yeah?
Oh, lovely holiday.
Fun with the kids.
I went berserk on the pina coladas.
Fantastic.
How was yours?
Well, apart from Joanie breaking her arm
and having to, you know,
think about whether we were going to get to Greece or not,
in the end, we got out there and we ate, drank,
were very, very merry and had a lovely suntan.
I don't know where it's gone, but there you go.
I've still got the remnants of my...
You have.
Oh, my God, do you know what we did on our last night?
The kids, Eva, Kit and Noah, just said,
Mummy, we're going to run and jump into the pool.
This is about half past 11 at night.
They all ran and then they dived into the pool. So my children are in the pool, half past 11 at night they all ran and then they dived into the pool so my
children are in the pool half past 11 at night soaking wet jumping around bouncing on this big
ball thing that was in the pool and I was like oh my god oh my god and then but they were like and
kit went thank you mummy for letting us do this they were in like wild abandon I was that family
that you go oh for goodness sake that's just awful and then I got
them out and then as we were going past um this couple said oh look at that with the kids what
about you parents why don't you join in and I went you know what stuff it I will fully clothed in my
evening dress and everything herald and I I parked up the pram and I dived in the pool and then James
jumped in as well and then the kids jumped in and we wereived in the pool and then James jumped in as well and then the kids
jumped in and we were all in the pool half past 11 at night fully clothed fantastic and I thought
that was quite exciting and I enjoyed it well done you yes I had that wild abandon and then I came
home and I'm not even joking right we landed and within about half an hour I felt like this again
I was like that really stressed I know what you mean I do know what you mean. Yeah. But it's good to have a holiday. It is. Jo, your hair looks beautiful.
Oh, thank you. I had it cut recently. It is lovely. It's very short. It's very, I've had a
hell of a lot cut off. I went, I had a dry cut. Oh. Yes. I've never had a dry cut. Yeah. Well,
this is the first dry cut that I've had. And I was a bit like, you know what, just go with it and just see what it's like.
Was that less money?
Yes, it was.
It was less money and it was less time, which was really, really nice.
And I went in and then just felt, and also I had to air dry it before I had it done.
So normally, you know, I'd blast it with the hair dryer, but I air dried it,
which is just like not actually doing anything but just sort of standing there and it dried and so it had its natural sort of
texture went in and then she had a feel of it and I went oh do whatever you want to it and then she
just had to go and you know and cut quite a bit off and I was a bit like oh my gosh you know I'm
being this short in ages but then also it feels really quite nice having my neck free it looks
really really nice thank you honestly really. It looks really, really nice.
Thank you.
Honestly, really so true.
I was really worried, though, if I looked a bit prissy and a bit like a librarian.
No.
You know, if it was a bit, like, sleek like that.
Yeah, yeah, no.
It looks really good.
It looks really healthy, very thick.
Yeah.
Really sexy.
I don't know if I'd go as far as sexy.
Yeah.
Oh.
Looks great.
Maybe when I've got a bit of a kink in it.
Oh.
What have you been up to? My God, you've been so busy haven't you yeah it's been busy but as have you we've both been
busy honestly it's mad i do feel like our summer specials have flown by yes that's flown that that
month has just flown by it doesn't even seem like a month does it i hope everybody listening has had
a lovely lovely summer I have to say.
I can't believe, though, that we're almost getting to the end of it.
And it kind of feels just like the beginning because it's only now getting warm.
I know what you're saying.
Yeah.
It's always the way.
And the kids now are going to be going back to school.
And it'll be 25 degrees.
Yes, it will.
I'm quite pleased that they're going back now, though, are you?
I can't wait for them to go back.
I'm so bloody tired.
I know.
I'm so tired.
And also, they need a routine. They do. It gets to a point mine now we're just lying in yeah i phoned
james earlier on today yeah at i'm not even joking i think it was quarter past 12 or half past 12
and they're all in bed and i said to him oh i've just you know finished up rehearsals i've come
out now what you up to or nothing and he went well um, Bo and Noah are up. I'm just making them breakfast.
But the other two haven't even surfaced yet.
And it was about half past 12.
How in God's name am I going to be able to get them body clocks back to getting up at 7 in the morning?
I know.
Eli's got up at 1 o'clock yesterday.
She did.
Joni's good.
Joni keeps the same sort of time, which is nice.
Yeah.
But you're right.
I don't know how they're going to get up at six o'clock.
It's going to be hell.
They'll have to shove a rocket up her arsehole.
Yeah.
It's going to be so hard.
And how have rehearsals been for Gavin and Stacey?
Oh my God, it's been so much fun.
Oh my God.
It's mad though, you know, we did the read-through
and that was just kind of like mad, everybody all in the same room again.
But then really moving, because you just think,
this is going to be the last time we do this.
Oh, but it won't be the last one.
It will, it will be.
It will.
I mean, I'm just like, oh, my God,
we will never be in this situation now,
all of us here like this together ever again.
Did you not feel like that the last one?
No.
No, I kind of didn't.
Because I always, I always felt like it was going to be the end.
But then I always kind of, there was always a window open still.
Yes.
And it didn't ever feel like, the only time it really felt complete like it was the end,
was at the end of series three.
And we were told that is it.
Yes.
And I remember crying a lot.
And I remember Ruth coming into the makeup track and I couldn't even look at her and I couldn't speak because I was crying.
And it's only ever felt really final then.
So with all of the other ones, I've kind of felt like,
oh, you know, the window's still open.
But with this, it's kind of like,
God bless, it will never be like this again.
I know.
But rehearsals have been fun and everyone's so lovely.
Oh, that's so good.
Yeah.
Oh, brilliant.
I know, it's going to be exciting going to Cardiff.
But you know what now?
Because there's like, Bo's come along and I've now got a fourth child.
Yeah.
Learning lines is insane.
I finished rehearsals the other day and then I drove home.
I parked up in this car park near the house and I sat in there just to learn lines.
And I sat in there until nine o'clock at night when it got really, really dark and I thought
I might be attacked and then I drove home.
Yeah, I understand. Because I was just like, and then as soon as
I got into the house, Bo was just like, I want
boob. Mummy, mummy, mummy, mummy, mummy.
Yeah, mummy, mummy, everyone wants to play. She wants to bring me all of
her toys and then she wanted me to read
to her. I was on my arse. I was
exhausted. I, did you hear
about the mum who
someone said every time their child
says mummy, one of their children, they do a squat?
Yes, I did. I saw it
on social media. So I wish I'd
started doing that. No, I haven't.
I haven't. I saw it. I thought that's an amazing idea
and I'm going to do it. And I've not done it yet
but I will do it. We should just
write, should we make a pact and should we start it tonight?
And go, right, come on. And then
for our next episode, let's see if we've carried it on.
All right, let's do it.
Let's do it.
All right, let's see.
Let's see if we can do that.
Because I thought that when she's going,
Mum, squat.
Mum, squat.
I think, I don't know if we'll be able to walk up the stairs.
What, after squatting?
After 24 hours.
Or whilst squatting.
Hey, and do you know what I've done as well?
Oh my God, so much has gone by.
I bought myself a Peloton.
It's so good.
Bike or running?
Bike.
I always thought that I would never use it.
It's just like a normal bike.
Why would you even need that or do that?
Oh my God, it's amazing.
Do you love it?
It's brilliant.
It arrived.
I sat on it, did all of the things.
There you go, click, click with your feet.
All of that.
I was so flipping precious about it because Kit was wanting to type everything in.
And I got really angry with James because he was trying to set it up.
I didn't want him to touch anything.
So I actually made him leave the room.
And I do have to say, when everybody cleared the room and left me to set it up myself,
I did it quite quickly and it was all right.
That's very good.
And then I jumped on, did a 20-minute class, literally straight away like that.
Fantastic.
And if you'd have said to me, here's a bike,
go outside and just cycle for 20 minutes,
I'd have gone, oh, I can't be bothered.
Yeah, absolutely.
But you've got the music.
There's a woman, well, or a man, telling you, you know,
you need to be doing this, you're doing so well.
Put the speed on this.
Yeah, yeah.
Put the cadence thing on this.
And because somebody's telling me what to do, I'm doing it.
Brilliant.
I love it.
I love it.
I've not been on my mind for about two months. Have you got it. Brilliant. I love it. I've not been on mine for about two months.
Have you got one?
Yeah.
I didn't know you had one.
I told you this.
Did you?
I'm sure I told you.
But mine's been used for washing.
I've chucked a skirt over there this week,
which is something I never do.
I hate doing things like that.
Yeah.
And I just keep walking by it,
thinking I've got to get back on it. Oh my God. But I just haven't had any time and I don't feel guilty about it fitness always goes
by the wayside that's the first thing to drop off if I'm busy I mean I'm sorry but when you're
working and it's really hard and you come in at the end of the day yeah there's a there's a you
know bit of exercise or there's a glass of wine just give me the glass of wine because I'm knackered
yeah well before we actually do get into this week's telly,
we've had a voice note from a listener who remembers a show you loved as a kid.
Let's have a listen.
I absolutely love your podcast.
I listen to them as soon as I come out, when I'm walking and when I'm cleaning the house.
I just love you girls. It's like talking to friends.
So I've just listened to your TV villain one
and you mentioned Dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs was amazing.
I used to love watching it as a kid
and you can actually watch it on Disney Plus
so you can relive it.
Keep up the good work.
I absolutely love you guys.
See you later.
Thank you so much.
I didn't know you were on Disney Plus. That's brilliant. I might check it out because I don't remember it. You you later. Thank you so much. I didn't know it was on Disney+.
That's brilliant.
I might check it out because I don't remember it.
You've got to pop it on.
The kids will really like it.
Yeah.
Really good fun.
Brilliant.
Absolutely brilliant.
We've had a voice note here from a listener.
Let's see what they've got to say.
Hi, Geronat.
Just wanted to send my thoughts.
Absolutely loving everyone else's opinions one,
the bonus apps, hilarious.
I literally laughed so hard when I heard that someone thinks,
I even know it makes me laugh,
that Dick Powell in Gavin and Stacey is a villain.
I mean, obviously he gets dodgy meat off the back of a van,
but, oh my gosh, it's so funny.
It really cracks me up.
And I think of him every time we have a barbecue.
I honestly thought the villain,
when you said there was a villain from Gavin and Stacey,
I thought, oh, I assume that must be Dave Coaches.
There's nothing particularly wrong with Dave Coaches,
but obviously everyone loves Smithy
and thinks that Dave just kind of totally gets in
where he's not wanted with Neil the baby.
You know, it's like, well, if you don't mind Smith,
we just want to keep him in as routine-like.
And I just, like, it's at those points,
like, oh, Dave, man, you're being annoying.
But genuinely, I just thought it's so funny
hearing that someone thinks that Dick Powell
is a villain anyway thanks for your podcast it really does make me smile and literally laugh
out loud and I feel like I feel really strongly about everything you're talking about and I love
it so thanks oh what a lovely voice note lovely she. She's right, though. Yeah. Yeah. Dave Coates annoys me.
Oh, does he?
I'm afraid so.
A little bit sometimes.
Is it because of the Smithy thing?
Yeah.
Oh.
Mind you, right, it's only now, because I'm going back and watching it.
I think, is it in series three or two?
No, it's the Christening.
So I think that's series three.
And Smithy goes to go and sit you know with his own baby
and then Ness and Dave say
oh go and sit down there and everything
and I was just like oh god love him
he can't sit there with him
and Dave's there
that's what I mean
it's just a little bit annoying
I know
oh lovely thank you for that
that was a lovely voice note
right I reckon it's time to get on
yes what have we been watching this week
we have been watching The Jetty on BBC iPlayer,
Only Murders in the Building on Disney+,
and Mr Big Stuff on Now and Sky Max.
Right, let's talk telly.
So, show one, The Jetty.
We've had a few of you at home recommend The Jetty to us,
including this voice note from Gemma.
Hi, Matt and Jo. I just thought i'd send you a quick message to see if you are watching
the jetty with jenna coleman starring as the main character i love anything which jenna coleman does
so i was really excited for it we've watched the first episode in our house with the second one
to be watched tonight and I think the third one is
also now released um so I wanted to get your views on it because we were slightly underwhelmed
but it's definitely watchable and I want to know what happens so I would love to hear your thoughts
this is Gemma in Bedfordshire thank you well you know what if I was going to summarize the jetty
yeah I've only watched the first episode right me too I don't quite know what? If I was going to summarise the jetty... Yeah. I've only watched the first episode, right?
Me too.
I don't quite know what I'd say.
So there's like a detective inspector person woman.
She's about 34, played by Jenna Coleman.
She's great, isn't she?
Yeah, she's really good in it.
I mean, she is really good.
She's ever so natural, isn't she?
And she's just like so believable.
And she's playing quite...
She's quite hard, isn't she?
Not hard, it's horrible.
I'm just a bit bored.
I'm a bit bored of like,
female copper.
Yeah.
Being hard around the men going,
oh,
did you get fucked on the,
Yeah,
but you know,
how did she say that?
Yeah,
I did.
But you know,
as they were walking down,
I thought of you,
right,
because as they got out of the car
and they were walking down, her and then the young cop, Because as they got out of the car and they were walking down,
her and then the young cop, who's like the young naive one,
who I bet gets killed or something.
Young naive bloke.
As they were walking down to go in, because there's been this fire
in like the lake house restaurant-y type thing.
I was looking at her long flowing coat and I thought,
oh, look, detective coat.
And it just made me think of you.
Yes.
Because I was like, oh, look, that was her choice for her detective.
That's right.
But like, she's like this detective her husband has died she's got a daughter
yep um and thought the daughter was fabulous as well yeah i thought she was great really good yeah
and then there's this lakeside is it a is that a house or a car someone's bought it it's gone on
fire it's all about the tourism and how people come in from other places, which is interesting.
I like that.
Yeah.
All these kind of pretty places.
And then all, like, intercut with all of that,
there's this whole thing about this girl who's sort of truanting in school
and you can see she's going off the rails a bit
and she's drawing in this younger, innocent girl in with her
who's wanting, you know, to be part of, like, her gang.
And then the other one who's truanting
is sort of meeting up with this older fella.
Older guy.
Yeah, but he only looks like early 20s or mid-20s,
doesn't he, you know?
But she's meeting up with him
and it looks like it's all really dodgy.
And then at the end of episode one,
because then Jenna Comer's character starts,
goes, oh, yeah, well, see, look,
I can't describe what it's about or what happens
because in the first episode it felt quite slow, but I was being drawn into it. No, I agree. I can't describe what it's about or what happens because in the first episode
it felt quite slow but i was being drawn into it i couldn't stop watching it i think she's right i
didn't quite know what was going on and then by the time i got to the end there'd been a thing
about this young girl who'd gone missing that another reporter person has come in to try and
discover because she's doing a podcast that's right journalist on. That's right, journalist lady. There's the Truenton thing going on. And by the way, spoiler alert for the end of episode one.
That older fella, Jenna Coleman's husband, has died,
but she's now getting worried because he seemed to like younger girls.
But then we realise, don't we, that the flash...
That it's all a flashback.
It's all a flashback, isn't it?
The two young girls, it's a flashback.
Yes.
And that is Mac, the bloke.
Yes, so he is Mac. And then the truanting girl is the girl who
went missing but i was slowly drawn into it by the end i was like okay right i want to know what's
going to happen next i agree with you i just found it a little bit slow and a little bit
underwhelming and i think the voice like jem who voice noted, absolutely hit the nail on the head for me.
Bit underwhelming, little bit slow.
And then it kind of, I just thought, well, actually, I would like to know what's going to happen.
Yes.
Will I continue to watch it? Possibly.
Yes.
I'll have to be honest. It depends what else catches my attention.
Well, I thought, oh, it's caught my attention now, right? I want to know what's going to happen.
Yeah. It just catches my attention. Well, I thought, oh, it's caught my attention now, right? I want to know what's going to happen. But then I thought I might just go on the internet and have a look
and just read what's happened in the episodes,
which I know is really bad.
No, I know what you mean.
And not the point of the whole thing.
I want to know what's going to happen.
Yeah.
But I don't know if I can be bothered to get through.
It was like when we were watching,
do you remember that thing that we watched all about the aeroplane?
Yes.
The drama with the aeroplane.
Red Eye, wasn't it?
Red Eye.
Yes.
I never got to the bottom of that.
And now I feel like I'm just going to Google it and find out what happened.
Oh, my God.
I watched all of that.
Did you?
Because the children loved it.
Right.
And thinking back, it was completely unsuitable for the children.
But I let them sit down and watch all of it.
They loved it.
You know my view.
I let mine watch everything.
It's all good for them.
No, it's all good.
It's all life lessons.
But yeah, I thought it was good, right?
I was drawn in.
I thought it was good.
I agree with you that it was kind of like not much happened,
but I was kind of hypnotised into it.
And now I do want to know what's going to happen next.
And Jenna Coleman has got amazing hair.
She's got nice hair.
It's so nice.
Not as nice as yours.
No, it's thick.
It's a nice length.
Not as nice as yours at the moment, I'm telling you.
It's so thick. I was like, and it's glossy.
I think she's got a colour on it.
I think you've got hair dysmorphia.
You think so?
Yeah.
I think you need to really start loving the hair.
Start loving the barnet.
But I think that the jetty is worth tuning into.
I'd say give it a go.
Give it a go.
Give it a go, right?
Go through the first episode, give it a go. Give it a go. Give it a go, right? Go through the first episode, give it a go.
Definitely, definitely.
Yeah.
You can watch all four episodes on BBC iPlayer
and also it's only four.
Four, but yeah.
So it's easy peasy, isn't it?
You know what I mean?
Only Murders in the Building,
which is what we're going to talk about next.
I love Only Murders in the Building, so is what we're going to talk about next. I love Only Murders in the Building,
so you can watch it on Disney+.
Yep.
We had a listener a couple of weeks ago
who recommended this show during our Super Sleuths Part 2 episode.
Yes.
And I honestly, I can't believe, right,
that I've not seen it before now.
I can't believe it.
They're on Series 4.
What?
They're on Series 4?
There's thousands of them.
Oh, my God.
And I looked, right, and it's almost a bit like a podcast
because when I went on to have a look at it,
it said a new episode is released every week.
Unbelievable.
I think it's so clever.
I've only watched one episode.
Me too.
No, I'm halfway through my second episode.
I love Steve Martin.
Oh, my God, me too.
Selena Gomez is brilliant.
Oh, who's the other guy?
Martin Short.
Martin Short, sorry.
I just think the three of them,
they're so different.
What a brilliant concept of the building.
Yeah.
I just think it's absolutely brilliant
and I want to, again,
the reason I didn't watch any more
is I was like,
I want to watch this with Mark.
I want to watch this at home.
Yeah.
And I think Eliza will like it and I just are really brilliant what a great idea that they're all into
so basically listen they're all into you find out you've got three characters you don't know
really what's going on no do you you don't know they're just in New York and it's hustle and
bustle the way it starts it's brilliant isn't it because they're all just talking about why they
love New York yeah and then, Steve Martin started talking.
And I thought, oh, my God, I just love his voice.
Yeah.
And he's just amazing.
And Martin Short is just so flipping brilliant and funny.
Hannes and Selena Gomez got an amazing voice.
Yeah.
And this quality that she's got to her, which is sort of, you know, quite laid back.
Quite calm.
The three of them just complement each other so well.
I agree.
And they are so so different
and you just wouldn't believe it
they're like chalk and cheese
yeah
but you find out
kind of you see
the ambience
you know where they live
the atmosphere
you kind of
throughout episode one
get a feel for
what's going on
a little bit with them
and if they live with people
whatever
but all very
we don't find much out
in episode one
it's about 34 minutes as well.
This doesn't go on forever, these.
No.
They're kind of half an hour-ish, which is really, really good.
Yeah, it's excellent.
And you find out that they're all into true crime podcasts.
Yeah.
Well, and this one in particular, all about Oklahoma.
Yeah.
And they find out and there's a, well, you carry on.
Then you've got the fire alarm goes off.
Well, then what happens then?
The fire alarm goes off.
Yeah.
And then a murder.
They go to go back in and then they're told they can't go back in.
That's it.
Because an actual murder has happened in their building.
And they just can't believe it because they love true crime podcasts.
Yeah.
And so they're like, oh my God, this is actually happening here.
We need to do a podcast about it.
So they sneak in and they go, right, okay, we're going to see,
we're going to start, you know,
seeing if we can solve the crime ourselves anyway,
whilst we're doing it. Why don't we end up doing a podcast of it and then they start doing a
podcast yeah so every episode is it all just revealing their podcast well it must be it must
be so good i would watch the three of them in like anything anyway right but the fact that the show
is so good as well and then you put the two things together it's flipping brilliant yeah it's shot
really well it's so well written it's so funny very very different i just feel like it's got a real really good feel
about it yeah really good music i love the title it's funny so when we're talking about true crime
and murder yeah don't think that because you know that i'm not a fan of all of that so it's much
more comedic quite gentle mart, he plays this really dry,
you know, actor.
Used to be a detective of some,
so it sounds like he used to be
a bit of a Columbo.
Yes.
Back in the early 90s,
doesn't it?
And then Martin Short
plays this,
he's, you know,
like a director,
but he's hard up now.
He's, you know,
can't get any work going
and everything,
but he's very, quite bitchy, but also really theatrical.
Flouncing around in a big purple coat.
And then Selena Gomez is very mysterious.
And she's very, very laid back.
And she's very calm.
And she's so slow.
But she's very glamorous.
She's beautiful.
And she's doing up the whole of her aunt's apartment.
Yes, her aunt.
And you don't know a lot about her.
But then at the end of the first one,
you discover that she does know the person who yes who died yes yeah it's very good very good i would recommend that
to anybody oh my god give it a watch and they've done four series yes wow i'm only on episode two
i know there's honestly there's loads god and whilst we're talking about something with loads
of episodes are you still watching This Is Us?
I haven't watched a thing.
I haven't watched any of it.
I haven't watched a thing.
It's like a mountain to climb.
I want to watch it.
I love it.
Yeah.
I don't think I'm going to go back to that one
because it just seems like a mountain to climb.
I know.
So I think it's going to be quite emotional.
Whereas with this, I am like a thump of the eaves loads.
I think we can pop in and out of this though.
It's just, I'm like, oh my God, fab.
Because I know I'm just going to really enjoy it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I know what you mean.
But This Is Us, everyone I talk to, they can't believe,
they're like, you're so lucky that you've not watched it all yet.
Oh, my God.
It gets better and better and better.
That's all I hear about This Is Us.
Oh, yes.
So I think that's one to put on a shelf,
and I think it'll be timeless anyway.
You can watch it.
I just need a bit more time.
I think when the kids go to university.
Oh, I know you say that. I don't think that's a show to watch when the kids go to university oh i know you say that
i don't think that's a show to watch when the kids go to university actually isn't it yeah
too emotional i'm just very glad that i've got this all set up now that we've got loads of this
to watch loads of stuff to watch we won't be bored when they go to uni joe we won't we'll just be
watching loads of stuff on the telly well but it's just the comedy of Martin Short and Steve Martin.
I mean, just absolutely brilliant.
Steve Martin's timing is unbelievable.
Oh, God, he's so good, isn't he?
So you can watch the first three series on Disney+,
with new episodes from Series 4 being released every Tuesday.
So our next one is Mr Big Stuff.
Save the best till last. So our next one is Mr Big Stuff.
Save the best till last.
It was recommended by a listener as one that I might like.
I wonder why.
So, the other night Mark and I were in bed.
I said, I've got to start watching.
We've not watched Danny.
It's really bad. I said, I've actually now got to watch it for the podcast.
I said, so it's going to make us.
I felt terrible that I'd not even watched it.
And we watched four.
Did you?
I've only watched one.
Have you?
But I think it's bloody brilliant.
We watched four.
So good.
I am still, I may be biased, but I just think Danny's brilliant.
Oh my God, he's amazing.
I think he's hilarious.
He's so good.
He's comedy time.
I've always said he should do comedy because he's always, he think he's hilarious. He's so good. His comedy time, I've always said he should do comedy
because he's always, he makes me really laugh.
Yes.
He really, really does.
But in this, yeah, I think he's absolutely brilliant.
There was a part of me and Mark was really laughing.
Like when the brother's got the spoons out.
Oh, my God.
Mark was crying, crying.
And I was like, is it that funny?
It was so funny. Was it? I was like, is it that funny? It was so funny.
Was it?
I was like, is this really that funny?
It's just so mad.
And then what about the bit?
So Adrian Scarborough, who plays Pete, right?
Oh, my.
I just was thinking about you and him.
You know when he's in the back of the car and he's all taped up?
Yeah.
And then he's drunk.
Yeah.
And then he says something like, cheesy something.
He just yells that thing in the air.
I had to
rewind it three times to re-watch him doing that because it made me laugh so much i think adrian
scarborough is one of the best actors in the uk he really is isn't he it's unbelievable he is so
good i mean he's just and all of his different characters he doesn't he's brilliant believable
so so funny but i went oh I really like everyone in this.
And I like the brother, so you've got the geek.
And I just think with comedy, it's very, very hard.
Yeah.
Because you're watching it and you have to have the certain characters
to make a comedy work.
Yes.
And I'm thinking, is it just because I love comedy so much now
that I'm so critical?
When he walked out, Danny, and his character walked out
and he had the dressing gown, he was on the drive,
I thought, well, this is King Gary.
What's King Gary?
Oh, it's another comedy.
But I was like, well, this is King...
And I thought, no, it's comedy and you need these characters.
Yes.
So you've got to forget other ones and just search what it is.
And by episode four, I said to Mark, after two, I went,
I don't really like...
I said, I don't find this very funny, although I find Danny funny. And then I thought, four, I said to Mark after two, I went, I don't really like, I said, I don't find this very funny.
Yes.
Although I find Danny funny.
Yeah.
And then I thought, no, I'm being really stupid.
Yeah.
It's because I'm comparing it to everything else.
Yeah.
And then after, I said, I really thought about it and I went, actually, that's really good.
Yeah.
As a comedy, it's really good.
I think it is.
It's clever.
Yeah.
It's directed really well.
I think it's acted really well.
I think, so it's about this fella who's quite angsty.
He works in like this carpet showroom and he's very nervy, I think, so it's about this fella who's quite angsty.
He works in like this carpet showroom and he's very nervy, very angsty, very, you know.
Just very boring.
Oh my God, and it starts as well, doesn't it?
She's brilliant.
Yeah, oh my God, his fiance.
I haven't seen her in anything before.
No, I haven't.
She's great.
She's bloody brilliant, isn't she?
And their sex life is not going,
they've tried to spice it up a bit
by their sitting in a car.
And...
Well, he thought he might like it in public.
Yes.
But they are around the back of Halford's car park.
Yeah, and it's not worked at all.
So they've both gone into work and then he's in work
and then suddenly Danny turns up and he's his brother.
Yeah, you don't find that out first thing.
Yeah.
But you kind of know there's some sort of link.
He's drunk, he looks really rough.
He's obviously just been beaten up and he's going looking for him.
And then he turns up in this angsty fella's house.
Him and the fiancé are just like, oh my God.
He pretends that he doesn't know him and gets rid of him.
But then he meets up with him and then he brings him back.
The stuff with the tin.
I mean, oh my God, yeah.
The stuff with the tin and the dad's ashes,
which aren't the dad's ashes are they
it's actually a burner phone
it's clever
the more I think about it and the more I talk about it
I gave it a really bad time when I first
watched it and then I'm like actually
very funny everyone in it's brilliant
I think Ryan Sampson who plays the anxious
brother also wrote it
did he write it?
he wrote it and I love every it oh okay he wrote it oh fine
and I love
every time he talks about
the poppadoms
and the
oh I know
I like all that
the way that they sing them
they're so
I think their relationship
is just
their chemistry is amazing
very very good
they're so close
they're just the way
that they sing things
to each other
I was just bawling
I was laughing so much
yeah
it was good
and I just think
any time Danny Dyer
says something like blah blah blah darling it just makes me go And I just think any time Danny Dyer says something like,
blah, blah, blah, darling, it just makes me go,
oh, my God, I just want Danny Dyer for me, darling.
He's very good in it.
He's so good.
Very, very good.
Did you see in one swift move, I know it was probably a stuntman,
but in my mind it was Danny Dyer, in one swift move,
how he got Adrian Scarborough by the throat
and then pinned him down to the ground.
And I thought to myself, God, Danny can move really well.
I know it probably wasn't him.
Oh, is that when he did the mosey?
Yeah, he like got him sort of by the throat.
Interestingly, Mark was sat here.
How geeky is this?
Mark went, oh.
The credits come up, right, on the first one.
And he went, oh, I knew that was Ray DeHaan.
And I went, what?
Eeky.
And the stunt coordinator, he went, I should have said that when it was on.
He likes doing that.
It's a move that he always uses.
Oh, my God.
So I knew that was Ray who stunt coordinated that.
I said, oh, we're such geeks,
like knowing all the stunt coordinators and everything.
Sometimes it takes the magic away from Tony, doesn't it?
Well, yeah.
Well, it didn't take the magic away from me.
Thank God I didn't know him.
Because in my mind, I was like, oh, Danny moves well.
Very, very good. I think it's good i'm gonna carry on watching it and they're nice short episodes they're really short like i said
i've got through four already i really loved it and i kind of i don't know what to expect like
if you'd have said to me right put this on and i'd be like okay i can kind of imagine you know
what danny's gonna be like in it and okay oh, okay, this is the story, whatever. But I never, ever would have guessed that halfway through,
you know, Ryan and Danny would start doing a dance routine with spoons.
Oh, no, brilliant.
I mean, it's just, I'm not expecting stuff that's happening.
I think it's really funny.
Yeah, I think you're right.
And we don't know now, is he going to do the wedding,
is he going to take the wedding fund money?
My God, what's he going to do?
I don't know because I think he really likes them as well.
He really wants to help them.
Yes.
So, yeah, very interesting.
I really like it and I highly recommend it.
Yeah, I'd say definitely watch it.
I mean, it's funny.
It is.
It's just funny.
Yeah.
Brilliant.
You can watch all episodes of Mr Big Stuff on Now and Sky Max.
Jo, before we wrap this up,
let's hear what recommendations our listeners have got for us.
Oh, lovely.
Yeah.
First up, we've got a recommendation from Maxine.
Hi, girls.
It's Maxine from Liverpool.
We're struggling at the moment with our 14-year-old
because all he wants to do is watch YouTube.
So we had a think about some
series that we loved
and we've introduced him to Friday Night
Dinner. He absolutely
loves it. Give it a whirl
girls, Jim's character is
just the best. Hello
Jackie! Oh my god, I've never
seen any of it. Pardon? We should
do it because I have never seen any of it.
Get yourself on it
and that's a certain
that's a
that's a week
where I haven't got to
watch anything
it's continuously on
at my house
is it
Eliza watches it
when she goes to bed
can I watch it
with the kids
with Eva
she's 11
nearly 12
yeah
well I know you
you'd let anyone
you'd let Bo
she's two and a half
I mean a lot
Joanie's eight
just turned eight
right and she watches it.
Yeah, I mean, I wasn't happy at the beginning about her watching it.
Yeah.
But she doesn't really get the things that are rude.
Yes.
So in Friday Night Dinner, there is an episode where they have a, like a doll.
Yeah.
Which is Martin's doll and whatever.
Yeah.
And very awkwardly, he does it and he goes, oh, bugger me.
Oh, bugger off. Oh, bugger off.
Oh, bugger you too.
And Joanie now, she's eight and she does go,
oh, bugger me.
You're like, you can't.
Bugger off.
Oh, my God.
She's also started saying lately,
and I don't know if it's from a programme or not,
I don't know if she's watched some sort of old-fashioned film,
but she'll be in the car and she'll go,
God, blimmin' heck.
Does she really?
Blimmin' heck.
Really kind of burrow boy.
Blam it, you know, blam it, I'll rail it.
Blimmin' heck.
Oh, my God.
I don't know where she gets it from.
Bless her.
We need to do this then.
Friday night dinner is fantastic.
Because it's something I've never, ever seen.
It's brilliant. Let's definitely. My God Because it's something I've never ever seen. It's brilliant.
Let's definitely.
It's a top,
up in my,
definitely in my,
top ten.
It's definitely a top ten.
Definitely.
We've got to do it then
and it's a recommendation,
isn't it?
Definitely, definitely.
Finally, we've got
this recommendation
from a listener called Katie.
Hello ladies,
just wanted to tell you
how much I'm loving the podcast.
You both keep me company every day whilst I get my lunchtime steps in.
I wanted to recommend a series me and my daughter, who is 11, have been loving.
It's called Changing Ends, a comedy based on Alan Carr's younger life.
It is brilliant and so funny.
The character playing Alan, Oliver Saville, is amazing.
It's been lovely to watch something different with Ava
and talking about the themes around the show.
Definitely one to watch.
Lots of love, Katie.
Oh, that sounds good.
I love Alan Carr so much that I don't know why I've not watched that.
Another one.
I know, yeah.
So that'll be a nice one to watch if it's a nice, funny light.
Yeah, nice. We've got quite a few of to watch if it's a nice, funny light. Yeah, nice.
We've got quite a few of them now, haven't we?
Really, really good.
We've got a good list here for when.
Good, yeah, sounds good.
Well, also, aside from all of that,
we have got another call-out for you

Plenty of reality to talk about, isn't there?

in our normal weekly routine.

It really is.
I felt lost.
It's been ages.
I felt lost throughout the summer.
I know.
Without seeing you and having a little chat.
Back to normal.
Yes.

Is that it?
Yes.
And then you've got your mum, your dad or your partner.
You know what I mean?
I have said to Wynne this morning,
I will send you my days that I've got off.

I've not thought about loved ones

I've thought about myself
Fair enough
Well

Has Jamie talked about
how rehearsals are going

Just said it's going really well
Yeah
Going really well
Yes
It's exciting though
It is isn't it
Wyn's been enjoying it.
He sent me a photo of him when he'd had his photos done and everything.
I've never seen him wearing anything like that before.
Fantastic.
Well, Jamie said Wyn is lovely.
Oh!
As I said.
Oh, yes!

We'll be rooting for them.
Yeah, we'll be rooting for both of them.
