Starting point is 00:01:32 I'm your host, Caitlin Bristow. In the studio today, we have Australian-born country artist. Morgan Evans. Thanks for being here. This is like our rain check because we were supposed to podcast the other day, but we couldn't. But it worked out for the both of us because I got to go back to bed. Me too. Yeah, there you go.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Perfect. You got to go back to bed. Last time I saw you, you performed at one of our City Strong events at the workout event. That was a long time ago, though. It was there, yeah, was that like two and a half years ago? Yeah. Yeah. I was performing and you were doing lunges with a glass of white wine.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Yes, that's exactly right. And then I rapped, I think, and then you showed me up with your voice. Incredible. Yeah. We're a good duo, you and I. You sing, I'll rap. It's already begun. There you go. And you got to go to the Super Bowl, which is so fun.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Yeah. Did you have the best time ever? It's pretty crazy. Yeah. Was that your first Super Bowl? You know what? This is your first podcast, too. This is my first podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:24 And was that your first Super Bowl? We went last year as well. Oh, you did? So the people that own Kelsey's label also own the Buffalo Bills. Oh, wait, what? Yeah. So I guess when you own a football team, they obviously make space for you. Right, of course.
Starting point is 00:02:41 And so they invited us along to the game. And, I mean, as an Australian, to be at the Super Bowl, it's like, this is the most American thing, am I. That's how I feel even as a Canadian, like, even with just football in general, I'm like, the Americans love their football. Yeah. Is football a thing in Canada? No. I mean, we have CFL, the Canadian Football League.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Right. Is it the same sport, though? Yeah, it is. It's just different rules. A little, it's just a little bit different. But, like, the, I mean, NFL players make just shmillions. And CFL players need to get second jobs. Like, it's just not a thing there.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Hockey is, like, the main thing in Canada. The national sport. But, yeah, but it's so funny because I always say all Americans in their football, like, you just get into a room. and if you haven't met somebody, you know the conversation's going to go to, well, who's your team? What about those Titans? Yeah, exactly. Where are you from?
Starting point is 00:03:31 Oh, well, we aren't going to get along because I'm a Cowboys fan. It's just such a thing here. Do you have a team that you cheer for or do you have to kind of share for the Titans because you live here? Yeah, I'm a big fan of, like, supporting your hometown. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I always had a hometown football team in Australia, and it actually annoys me when people, like, support a team that has nothing to do with them. Oh, yeah, yeah. Like, oh, just when I was a kid, I liked them.
Starting point is 00:03:54 So now I support them. That doesn't make sense to me. That's really funny. Yeah, like you should be patriotic to where you come from. Okay, so hockey is obviously a big thing in Canada, and my team is the Edmonton Oilers, and they, I don't mean to be rude to them, but they're terrible, and they haven't been good for so long, but people always hang on to, like, the 80s when they won five Stanley Cups, and, like, they'll still hang on to that, like, oh, your guys' team is terrible.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Yeah, but we won five Stanley Cups. It's like, yeah, in the 80s. They haven't even been in the playoffs in an embarrassing amount of years But they're still my team And I still cheer for them every time they play Because that's my home team That makes me like you more
Starting point is 00:04:33 Good for you. I'm like lying, just want you to like me I hate the Oilers Just kidding No, but I always say you can't One of my girlfriends just moved to Calgary And she's like, I think I'm going to become a Flames fan Which is like Edmonton's rivalry
Starting point is 00:04:45 And I'm like, you can't do that You can't just switch teams On that note though I do feel lucky to have moved to national to where the predators are, which I feel like obviously a couple of years ago was pretty exciting time. Very exciting. When did you move to Nashville? I officially moved over four years ago. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:05:01 I've been living here that long, but before that I came back and forth for a long time. So it was kind of got to the point where I was here 50-50 and just flying too much. Is that because, so, okay, you're married now. Your wife, Kelsey Ballerini. Yeah. Is that why you moved here? It was for her? How did you guys meet?
Starting point is 00:05:19 I'd moved here already. Oh, you had? Oh, okay. I've been living here a couple of years, and we actually met in Australia hosting an awards show. Oh, okay. Oh, that's adorable. Yeah, it was a situation. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:05:32 Well, I'd moved here, and I was doing country music, and she was obviously doing her thing, and then I went back to host the country music awards in Australia, which I'd done a couple of times. And they called me the third year, and they were like, hey, we've got this idea. We want to get you an international co-host this year. And I was like, oh, who are you thinking? you know i got this down like we're gonna have to do more preparation or whatever and i'm like oh we're thinking kelsey ballerini and i was like yeah yeah that'd be okay yeah that'll be okay anyway and that's how we ended up meeting really and did you guys did sparks just fly right
Starting point is 00:06:07 off the bat yeah it was pretty it was pretty much straight away really yeah yeah it was um a day of rehearsal and then a day of show and then after the show we were like we just toasted a live tv thing together let's do a shot of tequila oh oh That's how it all starts. We did another one. And then just worked out that we were, like, in this dressing room and people would keep walking by, like the show producer would come by and we'd be like, oh, let's do a show with you.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Or like her manager, let's do a show with you. And before we knew it, sort of a river of honesty had been opened up by the tequila. It's like, yeah, that happens to the best of us. That's funny. You're like, yeah, we just host a live show and now we're doing tequila shots. It's like, that's how it always starts, right? Yeah, it's crazy. That's how many love stories start.
Starting point is 00:06:55 That's romantic, though. I love when people just, like, feel the sparks right off the bat. Actually, I also love when people start as friends and then a love grows. So, you know what, I'm just a fan of love. Yeah. Well, we were forced to be very professional at first because we were... Until the tequila was flown. Yeah, so I guess we had a couple of days of friendship.
Starting point is 00:07:14 I have a question. I'm circling back to this is when we first started talking. Yeah. Is football big in Australia? What's the sport there? Not this, not American football. We have way too many different kinds of sports. Right.
Starting point is 00:07:27 Our winter sports are rugby and rugby league, which are two different sports. Yeah. And then Australian rules football as well. Oh, okay. So, yeah, you kind of pick one of those. I've never been to Australia and I really want to go. Why not? I just, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:07:41 It's a long way. Yeah, I guess it's just a long trip. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I've been to Indonesia, which is really close to Australia, right? I went to Bali, and there were so many Australians. there because that's so close for them, right? Of course, yeah, yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:54 I'm like, am I right on my geography there? I can't tell you where things are in America, but I can tell you what the places. No, no, Indonesia's like one of those places. I'm trying to think of what the, I guess the Bahamas are pretty close and Mexico is really close. Obviously, there's water in between Indonesia or Australia, but they'd be like the beach kind of destination holidays. I actually do have plans to go to Australia. I have a trip that was offered to go there, so I might be going in April.
Starting point is 00:08:20 You should definitely go. I have to, right? Absolutely. I think it's just the long flight that's throwing me off. And wait, when is your summer? It'll be starting then. Oh, well. It's just the opposite.
Starting point is 00:08:30 Whatever. It's a, oh, I guess I could have figured that. Yeah. But you should definitely go. And if you have as much time as possible, because the flight is long and... You got to make it worth it? Yeah, yeah. Because I probably won't be going back anytime.
Starting point is 00:08:42 At least 10 days. Like, if you can strike it for two weeks, do that, or longer. Okay. Yeah. Okay, I'll try. Yeah. Hey, quick question. Would it surprise you?
Starting point is 00:08:50 you to learn that I'm traveling right now? Shocker, right? Because it really shouldn't at this point. Starting point is 00:09:57 Is The Bachelor popular in Australia? Do they have an Australian Bachelor? They do, yeah. They do? It's huge, yeah. Oh, I didn't even, I thought you were going to say no. No, no, it's a real thing. Do you watch it there?
Starting point is 00:10:08 Do you watch it here? I was aware of it down there. I mean, definitely here I'm much more aware of it because I know people like you. Obviously, Kelsey's like super into it as well. Yeah, I saw her watching on Instagram last night. It's pretty painful this year. Is it?
Starting point is 00:10:23 Well, I saw Kelsey. She was watching it on her Instagram story, like, drinking wine and being like, oh, my gosh. It's, I just don't think we're into the love stories yet. So it's like all the, like, bullshit right now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's, it's so many, right? Like, it starts with 20 people? There was 30 this year.
Starting point is 00:10:41 30 people. I mean, how can you have a decent conversation with 30 people? You can't. Yeah. And it shows over, like these, there was one episode, I think, last Monday or, where they were just sitting on a beach and they had nothing to say to each other because there's just no chemistry
Starting point is 00:10:55 and he's literally going oh, the rocks and the greenery it's like it's just no depth. That's what Kelsey posted last night. Is there rules behind? Because he seems like a pretty good dude. He's a great dude. Yeah, but so if you're at the start of a date like that
Starting point is 00:11:11 and you're looking down the barrel of a whole day, is there rules against just being like, okay guys, can we just call this? Yes, yes. Can you do that or you have to go through with it? Well, it depends. It depends how much the producer likes that contestant. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:23 And if they want them to go further, so they want more screen time for them. But, like, I remember certain dates where I was like, I can't do this for very long. Like, please don't put me through this. And sometimes it would be nine in the morning and we'd be like, okay, just pour a drink. And we're going to get through this. But they would help you out if you really didn't want, you know. Or if something was going terribly wrong, like, you can be like, oh, excuse me for a second and go talk to the producers and be like, can we wrap this up? I don't know why he didn't do that.
Starting point is 00:11:51 I just trying to imagine, like, being in the middle of a date and, like, the girl gets up and walks over to the producers and, like, doing, like, the cut the throat movement or whatever. You see them doing it? Yeah. What an amazing feeling for the guy. Well, I mean, how can you not tell when there's no chemistry, too, like, as the person? I don't know. Yeah. I just, yeah, I wonder if people knew.
Starting point is 00:12:11 You just can't help it. There's 30 of them. Exactly. Can't have chemistry with everybody? No. Anyways. I was thinking, oh, you were just with Blake. From Bachelor, Bachelorette.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Where was that? Denver. Yeah, yeah. We played in Denver and I guess he was friends with someone from the radio station or something like that. Anyway, he ended up. Blake gets around. That guy's everywhere all the time at like concerts and bars and I don't know. I mean, he's fresh off the show.
Starting point is 00:12:38 So he's in high demand right now. People want him at their stuff. But he was telling me to tell you that he says hi. How cool. He's a good dude. And hashtag, Sean. Okay. You don't know what that means?
Starting point is 00:12:51 No. What? I was like, wait, what does that mean? And he goes, he'll know. Oh, oh, no, no. Shut up, Sean was the thing. Okay, so when Blake got that wrong. That's so funny.
Starting point is 00:13:04 We have a mutual friend. It's actually Kane Brown's tour manager. Yeah. And we were on the road with Kane all last year. And it was just this thing we had where we went whenever we would see each other backstage, like, Sean would be like, shut up, Morgan. Or if I could get him first, I would say, shut up, Sean. It was just the thing like that. And we made a video for him, that's what he's talking about.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Oh, cool story, Blake. Yeah, sorry. It'd make me look like an idiot on my own podcast. He probably did that on purpose. You trusted him. I did. Never again. Never again.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Have a confession for me. I have a confession, yeah. Yes. Okay. I don't. Well, you used to do this all the time, do you? Exactly. That's why I'm like, I'm out of material.
Starting point is 00:13:48 I'm fresh out, so I'm relying on you to tell me a good confession. I don't know how good it is. All confessions are good. It's just telling me something embarrassing. Well, it's definitely embarrassing. It's definitely something I haven't told before. And I don't know how long I've been doing this because I've only noticed it since Kelsey's told me about it. But apparently when I sleep, I put my arms up straight.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Oh, my gosh, so do I. Do you do that? Wait, this is blowing my mind right now. Your head phone cord just got too excited. But you do, this is a normal thing? No, it's not a normal thing. But if we both do it, it's at least not crazy. I've never even talked about this because I'm like, I don't know, that's just a weird thing.
Starting point is 00:14:27 I don't know when I've done it lately, but I put my arms up in the air like a zombie, and then I start, like, tickling my own arms and, like, scratching them in my sleep. And I'll wake up to my arms like, like a zombie. Do you think? I don't know about the tickling and scratching thing, but. Oh, well, you should try it. It's the feeling of like you lock out your joints, right? So you're actually not holding yourself up.
Starting point is 00:14:49 It's just your bones that... Oh, it just locks. Yeah. And so that's why you can do it in your sleep because there's no muscles involved. Interesting. Is it because you get hot and you're looking for, like, cool air? I don't know. I was just looking for a quick arm scratch, I guess.
Starting point is 00:15:03 I regularly wake up. Kelsey's like pushing my arm down. That's so funny. I mean, you hear about people like talking in their sleep or snoring or... But you go full zombie. Full zombie arms, yeah. Interesting. All the time every night?
Starting point is 00:15:16 No. Well, who knows? I only know about it when I get caught. That's true. Yeah. That's so funny. See, I wake myself up doing that. Oh, scratching your own arm. Yeah. Like, I've noticed this since I was little because my mom told me. But since I was little, I put my arms out and I'll just start, like, scratching them in my sleep. But I'll, same thing. I'll lock them up. But I didn't ever know that that was, like, why? Like, that you don't, it doesn't need muscles. Well, I've only thought about it. This is not a technical sort of description. This is just me going, what the hell am I? How can I make this sound normal? It doesn't. And that's just so funny because when you said that, I was like, wait, somebody else does this? I've never met a fellow double confession.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Yeah. That's wild. I mean, there's probably only two people in the world and we're in this room right now. You have to be in this room, yeah. You read about it, but until it actually happens, it's wild. Wow. I'm really glad we had this conversation. Yeah, me too.
Starting point is 00:16:11 Me too. I don't feel bad about it anymore. No, you shouldn't. You should actually, you should. feel proud of it. It's very rare. I am. I'm proud. Thank you. I'm a zombie sleeper. Yeah. I'm glad we started this conversation because then now more zombie sleepers will reach out and bring more awareness to the zombie sleepers. Maybe we're starting a movement. We really are. It'll go viral. We should put it on YouTube. I wonder. I wonder how many people listening to this is like, hey, me too. Because I've
Starting point is 00:16:38 never heard anyone talk about it before. And I wonder how many people are just going to try and fit in and say that they do it too just to be a part of the club yeah yeah yeah we really went somewhere with this yeah um so you have a new album out called things we drink to yeah first of all what do you drink to what are things that you drink to well i called the album that because i noticed as the song started coming together that there were all these moments of my life and whether that was like moving to the other side of the world and finding a new home or meeting kelsey and getting married or you know i lost someone really close to me to, and the song, things that we drink to, is actually about that. But, yeah, there were all these moments in my life, these songs that I would raise a glass
Starting point is 00:17:19 and sort of cheers to it. Yeah. I really love that. And you've had so much success with Day Drunk and Kiss Somebody. Did you have a feeling that those songs were going to be the ones? Like, do you know? Because some people say that they, like, weren't expecting that. Like, I remember Carly Pierce telling me every little thing.
Starting point is 00:17:35 She was like, yeah, I liked it. But she said when she showed it to somebody, they were like, get ready for that song. to change your life and she didn't see that coming yeah right yeah look i don't know i've been doing this for so long and writing songs so long playing music but i sort of have learned to second third like way over guess or think everything and um but i do remember the day that we wrote kiss somebody i just met uh my producer chris de stephano who i write all the songs with as well and we actually met in australia too at a songwriting camp when i'd gone home for christmas but um we'd working together for a few months and writing and recording things. And I remember after we wrote
Starting point is 00:18:14 Kiss somebody that day, it was very easy and it felt fun and I love the song. You always love the song you're writing. Oh, yeah. But I remember that day, we went to the tin roof after us and we were having a drink and he was like, just really casually, he just went, I think we got one today. Really? And he's had a lot of success. So for him to say that, I was like, yeah. You're like, I believe you. We should send this to other people then, you know? And honestly, that was the song that started everything here for me. That was the song that got me the record deal here, and it was the first single,
Starting point is 00:18:44 and then it's the first one that people get to hear on the radio, too. Didn't you sing it on, like, Bachelor or Bachelorette or something? I did. Yeah, what season was that? It was, uh, Becca and Leo had done their, uh, this swamp date. Right. Like they'd gone out to the, um, in the helicopter. They always gone to helicopter.
Starting point is 00:19:02 Oh, yeah, yeah. Um, and then after the dinner, he did the whole like, hey, I've got one more thing over my sleeve. Yeah. And, um, yeah, they'd go. came and we were playing in a theater and oh yeah oh that's great yeah i do remember that that that actually just came to me now i'm like wait didn't you sing that on the show yeah yeah it was really cool actually i i i love the fans of that show they're very loyal they have a lot in common with country music fans i feel really because i feel like country music fans in the most part
Starting point is 00:19:28 love country music more than any artists and i feel like bachelor fans love the show and they love the people too but more than any of the people they love the show and they just huge fans and they're in, you know? Oh, yeah, it's very legit. That Bachelor fan, they call themselves. They're Bachelor Nation, whatever that is. Yeah, they're very passionate about the show. I don't know if you had experiences like this when you were on the show,
Starting point is 00:19:51 but so we were up there, we were playing kiss somebody, which made sense because they were dancing on this podium in the middle of the crowd. As they do. Kissing. Yeah. And it was kind of, it was cool. Yeah. It was a cool moment.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Yeah. But then people got on the stage and were right up next to them, taking selfies of themselves. with these people making out. Yeah, that's weird. Did you have a situation like that? Yeah, I did. I had a few, actually.
Starting point is 00:20:18 Not, and you know what? I guess it wasn't like a really intimate, like dancing, kissing moment, but I did, like, a comedy show, and I did a rap battle and, like, the winner, and we were making out, and people were out there taking, like, pictures. But I feel like the production side of it, like, I would think they would be, like, Okay, phones down, like don't have your phones out for a TV. But I think then they think of how many people are in that crowd that are going to be promoting the show for them. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:20:45 You know, like everybody's going to be talking about it and putting out there and, oh, watch me on TV tonight. So it's kind of smart. Yeah, I mean, they lost, there was no way to control it. Like, you couldn't have security pulling people. That would have ruined the moment completely. Well, you could have put your phones at the door. Oh, right, taking the phones completely, I guess. Because we're not allowed to have phones.
Starting point is 00:21:00 When you're on the show, you don't have your phone for like. Yeah, it's a secret, right? Yeah. It's all, you can't talk to anyone, don't have internet. You have nothing. Is it? I mean, I've seen the show enough to know that like, and people come off the show that actually meet people. Right. How's the balance of real moments compared to like, oh, this is a TV moment.
Starting point is 00:21:19 Yeah. I've just got to go through this. It's pretty 50-50. 50-50? That's a pretty good ratio, really. Yeah. Yeah. Because there's a lot of, I mean, there's times where I remember coming home from something and being like, wait, I was only in the moment because, like, I don't think I actually feel anything for that person.
Starting point is 00:21:34 But I really, it was real in the moment. like it's kind of just your surroundings and everything that the moment is real but then you get home and you're like was it because I actually don't feel anything now was it the moment or the person yeah right like was it the wine I don't know yeah yeah so yeah I would say it's half and half because there's a lot of real moments and a lot of real emotion but also you're also watching the edited version so it's a lot of it is but you have no control over what they absolutely not you should see the bachelor contract like the things you sign like i remember sign it going what the hell am i doing with my life like it it blatantly says we could make you look like a
Starting point is 00:22:16 fool like we have the power to make you look like you're doing something that you didn't do and you have no way and you're just initially beside it like yep cool like sign me out sounds great it's like a 40 page contract of them just basically covering their asses for everything and you're just signing your life away. It's, I always, I always say high risk, high reward for things. That, that show is high risk, high reward. I mean, thank God it worked out for me. Maybe not in the relationship side of it, but maybe it did. But it just, you know, it's some people like really, it really ruins them. Right. It's kind of sad, actually, but I mean, again, you're signing up for it. You don't know what you're signing up for until after you're like, damn. Yeah, I guess you don't
Starting point is 00:22:58 know who they got me. They got me. Yeah. Okay, what's the story behind day drunk? Just day drinking like just fun day drunk is my favorite drunk me too actually yeah like a sunday day drunk is where it's at it's funny because i've never been a drinking song guy yeah i've never been the guy that's like singing about that's like all i'd probably write about crushing cans on a Saturday or whatever you know um but uh that song i wrote about a real day it's like um it was kelsey's birthday two years ago and she'd come home from the road and uh and i had this whole day of birthday of birthday planned you know we can go do this we can eat here whatever yeah and uh she got home she was super tired and uh she she just said oh hey do you mind if we just close the blinds and like maybe
Starting point is 00:23:44 just open that bottle of champagne really instead of doing these other plans i'm absolutely yes let's do that and we ended up just hanging out all day and and uh and the whole song is basically based on that day oh that's cool quite metaphorical in a way too oh yeah but um You know, at the same time, I love it, too, is my favorite song to play live because I go to one of these country festivals anywhere in America, all the world, and get up in the middle of the day. And it becomes this drinking anthem at the same time, you know. Yeah. Oh, it's like a, yeah, it's like a Sunday fun day anthem. Absolutely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Oh, that's so fun. I want to write a song about day drinking. You stole my idea. I'm going to steal it back for you. Hey, there's plenty more songs to be written about that. That's true. That's true. And you're just with Old Dominion on their tour, right?
Starting point is 00:24:32 Yes. That's, I mean, not a big deal. It's awesome. Yeah. Best way to start the year. Wait, is country music big in Australia? Yeah. It is.
Starting point is 00:24:41 Yeah. I mean, it's not as big as it is here. Right. There's not as many people there either. Right. But, I mean, it's still a big deal. I like think of Australia as some, like, crazy foreign land. Like, do they even speak English over there?
Starting point is 00:24:53 Do they listen to country music? Well, I like to think of it or describe it, like, Texas kind of. Okay. You know how Texas has its own kind of country music? Yeah. But they also still love. Right. All the other, like, Luke Bryan, Nashville, country music, right?
Starting point is 00:25:06 Australia's the same. We have Australian country music, but then whoever. Florida, Georgia, Aline, Thomas Wright, will go down there, and they'll still be those people, yeah. I get what you're saying. Okay, Old Dominion, that's awesome. They are awesome, yeah. How much fun was it? I love Old Dominion.
Starting point is 00:25:19 They're just the best dudes. Are they? And they're so talented. Yeah. They're so genuinely talented that they don't have to try any harder than what they're doing. And that just comes across is so cool. And their show this year is great. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Yeah. It's cool to be a part of. That's amazing. And you're joining Dan and Shea for their tour? Yeah, at the end of this month. Oh, really? Yeah, straight into it. Wow. We spent a couple of months on the road with them last year, too, and they're great guys.
Starting point is 00:25:44 And they're having a real moment right now. Things are blowing up for them, so it's exciting to be around. Like their song about tequila. Exactly. Yeah. They stole your other ideas. I was going to say, all these drinking songs are, they live in my head. I just haven't put them on paper yet, okay?

So do you think growing up in Australia shaped your music career in country?
Starting point is 00:28:21 Like did you always want to leave Australia and go like? make it big in country in like Nashville? Definitely not always. I think it takes a little while to work that out. No, you didn't just come out of the womb and want to move to Nashville and sing. It came out of the womb with an American flag. Yeah. Tattooed on my back.
Starting point is 00:28:36 Yeah, weird. No, I grew up listening to country music. I grew up listening to my parents' records, which is kind of old rock and roll and old country music. So your parents were musicians. No. Oh. Oh, you're saying you listened to their right. Oh, I thought you meant like their actual music.
Starting point is 00:28:50 No, no. I'm glad my dad never met a record. My mom could have made a good record Really? Yeah Your dad can sing but your mom can No Yeah she's pretty good
Starting point is 00:28:59 Really? Oh that's cool But yeah I just grew up listening To country music And I didn't think of it As country music at the time I was just like
Starting point is 00:29:07 That was a Garth Brooks song That was a Led Zeppelin song It was just music You know And I started playing guitar when I was 13 And started a band with my brother That day Oh that's fun
Starting point is 00:29:17 And what was your band called? We had so many names Oh Yeah Wait you can do that You can have more than one name for you. Well, because we started one with 13. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:27 And 13's about the age when you discover music other than your parents' music. Right. Because I was the oldest. I didn't have any older brothers or just to show me music. So that's when I started discovering whatever was on the radio at the time, rock, rap, pump, whatever. And so our band played all of that stuff. Oh. And we went through all the phases in about three years.
Starting point is 00:29:45 It was very experimental time. Please tell me you have like it recorded somewhere. Oh, yeah. I have recordings of that stuff. like me pretending to rap and he was like the screamer in the band at some point it is so funny oh that's amazing can you please put that like on social media somehow i i have scanned social media and i don't think it's on there um at all you have to put it out there maybe one day i'll put you should make like your own little documentary and like how you got to where you are and
Starting point is 00:30:13 start with that just the 13 year old rap song yeah yeah i would like to know what a 13 year old raps about like ninja turtles and i can't remember what the rap was about no the rap was about one of my friends had got fairly severely beaten up oh and and he actually was hospitalized and it made me really angry when i was 13 and um and so i wrote this rap song about the dudes that like attacked him yeah yeah yeah oh that's a good video channel it actually came from a place of anger yeah oh that's most rap songs do i think i guess so yeah oh that's that's kind of special actually Good for you. With you and Kelsey being so busy with music, how do you guys keep your marriage live?
Starting point is 00:30:53 Like you both are touring all the time. Do you like, how do you do that? Last year was a bit of a challenge. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I say challenge and it just takes more work to do it. It's just planning ahead and finding, like, pockets of time and that kind of thing. Honestly, last year was the craziest year of my life easily.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Because in country music, when you put out your first single or song, song or music, you have to go around and you meet everyone. That's kind of the way country music works in this country. So you spend months, like, on the road going to visit radio stations and stuff like that. And when you're out Monday to Friday doing that and then playing shows on the weekend and then starting a Monday to Friday, it doesn't really matter what your wife does. You never see them, you know. And so that straight into touring was crazy.
Starting point is 00:31:42 But it was also kind of fun to plan for, you know, we could be, we're not going to see each other for these 10 days, but hey, on the other. 11th day let's do something cool wherever we are i always say that about distance or people that are so busy and only get like these pockets of time together that you probably make the most of that time so you when you do hang out and you do spend that quality time you're really doing like you're really having quality time yeah absolutely you never take it for granted right it's not like you just wake up and say goodbye for the day and then see each other that night and take sort of take it for granted yeah you could like plan pretty great dates something epic yeah and in different cities
Starting point is 00:32:18 and you're, yeah, that's cool, actually. Yeah. You know what? That's how you keep your marriage alive. You both go on tour and you only see each other once a month. Try to avoid each other. No, this year's been so good, though. We went away for Christmas and spent 25 days in a row together.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Yeah. Seeing my family, seeing Australia and then came back. And this year, honestly, the biggest reason is that I have a bus now so I can travel on the road and actually get sleep. And if she wants to come with, she can just jump on. Oh, that's amazing. And so everything's a lot easier so far this year. We'll see how we go.
Starting point is 00:32:51 You worked out the kinks. You figured it out. And now you're like, now we got this down, this long distance thing down. Yeah, for the minute. There's still a lot of planning involved, which I think is still the fun part. Like you said, it's still that, hey, let's have something great to look forward to. Of course. Let's put our heads down and work hard.
Starting point is 00:33:08 And then when we come up for air, let's enjoy it together. Yeah, I love that. You guys, where were you? I think Vegas. Were you in Vegas with Kane Brown? not too long ago. Because I think Colton, who's The Bachelor now, Blake and Jason were there backstage. And Jason told me, when you were out on stage, when you were performing, he said you should have seen Kelsey watching him.
Starting point is 00:33:31 She just like had the biggest smile and she was just so proud. He was like, I couldn't stop watching her watching him play because he said that she was just like so in all of you, which I thought was really sweet. That is sweet. Yeah. I appreciate that story. Yeah. Yeah, I would too. So what does 2019 have in store for you? The tour, obviously, with Dan and Shea. Any more tours? Yes. When does this come out? I don't know. Great question. We are going out this summer, but it's not my tour, so I can't announce it.
Starting point is 00:34:02 But I'm really looking forward to that. And we're also going to get back to Australia at some point to play some shows, which I haven't really gone down and played a proper tour there for years. Yeah, because you're pretty big time in Australia, aren't you? I don't know if that's the right time. But I have been playing music there a long time. Right. The more I travel, the more I get to do music, I feel like the more that you just want to go back and play in your hometown. Of course. Sort of, hey, guys, check this out.
Starting point is 00:34:28 There's something special about that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you like trust them. Yeah. Yeah. They were there with you from the start. Exactly. I get it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:35 That's like Bachelor fans. Like they were with you when you were a nobody and just on TV trying to find love. Right. And then they like all of a sudden a few years later, they're like, still. rooting for you and you're like wow you've been with me since the start yeah and yes i mean i appreciate that so much of course that's the that's the whole reason that i get to be here now so of course yeah it's gonna be a great year um i'm really looking forward to just playing live i feel like as long as i get to go do that that's that's what's what's your most favorite thing you've
Starting point is 00:35:07 ever done as a musician oh as a musician yeah um or whatever just as a human My favorite thing I've ever done as a musician. I mean, when I think of favorite shows, I think of two specific shows last year. And one was at Bridgestone Arena here in Nashville, opening up for Chris Young and Kane Brown. And anyone that's been to Nashville that has anything to do with music knows that that's the big spot in the music city. So getting to play there was awesome. Yeah. and the place was full and they were singing the song and it was wild and the other one was
Starting point is 00:35:50 I went back to Australia to do a promotional tour just to go talk to radio stations and stuff like that and insisted on playing a couple of shows because I knew every question in every interview would be why aren't you playing shows right so we played these three smaller shows but we played this one venue in Brisbane and it was the place that I opened for Taylor Swift when she came to Australia. You opened for Taylor Swift? I did. On her first tour of Australia, I opened for her at this venue. That's awesome. And I always remember that venue of being my favorite spot of the tour. And so we went back and we got to headline a show at that venue.
Starting point is 00:36:24 Oh, that's cool. And that was one of the only headline shows I did last year. So I got to play for the full show. And yeah, that was a pretty special mark too. Yeah. Oh, that's, whoa. That's cool. You should have started this podcast with. So I open for Taylor Swift. Let's start again. Yeah. We can just edit, cut and pace. Yeah, yeah. great okay and your brother and his wife just had a baby didn't they they did yeah you're good congratulations i do my research um so you're an uncle yeah first first time uncle first time it's pretty exciting isn't it it's yes i it's not even my kid and i totally understand the baby photos thing already i know oh i know it because you just don't realize how like
Starting point is 00:37:03 you're capable of that much love for like this little baby that you're like you know they don't and have a personality yet and you're like I love you so much do you guys want kids do you and Kelsey want kids uh yeah of course definitely in in good time you know of course but I will say the people ask what I miss about Australia and I always say oh the beach and people but that's what I miss like not being there for that yeah that's the hardest thing because yeah that's kind of a track you're kind of far away yeah and you don't know what it's going to happen either right she came like a week late or something oh really yeah anyway oh that's like what's her name Madeline, she's awesome.
Starting point is 00:37:39 Oh, God, I love that name, Madeline. Are they going to call her Maddie? That's what I asked, and I guess so. Yeah. Tom said, yeah. So cute. I love that. Okay, I've got some rapid fire questions for you. Hang on a second.
Starting point is 00:37:50 I need some coffee for that. Usually I have wine. Like, usually I'm drinking wine. I'm like, but it's, I mean, you know what? It's the morning. Yeah, but still, I still usually drink wine. Okay. But I have some stuff to do after this, so I couldn't do it.
Starting point is 00:38:00 I feel wrong. I feel wrong drinking coffee and not wine on this podcast. We're still on the vine today. Yeah, yeah, we're still on it. Good one. Okay. Favorite place to go with Kelsey? Anywhere with tequila.
Starting point is 00:38:12 Okay. We got married in Mexico, though, so I'll say Cabo. Okay, perfect. Favorite thing about Australia? The people, but the beach, too. Okay. Favorite getaway location. You know what?
Starting point is 00:38:24 We went to Hawaii last year. A place called Kauai? Yes, I've been. We were there for two days. Oh, that's it? We only had two days. That was just one of our... Oh, that was one of your like little...
Starting point is 00:38:36 Yeah, let's go to Hawaii. And we were in L.A., so it made sense, more sense. And that's my favorite place I've ever been, I think. I think me, too. That was one of my favorite places I've ever been. I love, loved it there. It's the perfect mix of a beautiful place, but also, like, you can go have good food and stuff like that. Yes.
Starting point is 00:38:54 But it's Jurassic Park. Yeah, it is. With epic waves, too. So it's, anyway. Do you surf? Yes. Well, I used to. I don't surf very much in Nashville.
Starting point is 00:39:04 Wait, there's no surfing in Nashville? Yeah, it's odd. Favorite music artist growing up? I remember stages. There was, Dias Straits was my first one. And then I remember discovering Keith Urban in my mid-teens. Oh yeah, I bet that was a big one. He became the guy.
Starting point is 00:39:26 Yeah, I love Keith Thurban. And favorite performance. I think we kind of just talked about that, didn't we? Yeah, Bridgestone, or the Tivoli in Brisbane, yeah. favorite single that you've released day drunk's my favorite so far i only have two so um yeah well i made it easy for you this one or that one favorite thing about nashville the people definitely the people i i still am amazed at the end of a day when you walk into a studio and you create a song you record it that day and you leave and you walk around you know where else in the
Starting point is 00:39:58 world could i do this i know it is natural's wild for that there's so much talent in the city it's absolutely crazy it is crazy it is crazy All right, timer's on 60 seconds. Starting point is 00:41:00 Okay, I'm going to get to some questions from listeners, which might have, some of them were kind of in my rapid fire. That wasn't bad. I was pretty easy on you in those rapid fire questions. That was much easy than I thought it was going to be. Usually, I'm like, that was pretty G-rated for me. A couple of glasses of wine could definitely push that. See, and that's, that's why I drink wine on the podcast because then it goes there. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I was really thinking when I came up with that idea, podcast, wine. Get people drunk. They'll say more. I drink for a living and I record it sometimes. Yeah, that's exactly what I. I remember when I first started the podcast, I got a wine sponsor and they like paid me a certain amount a year. And I
Starting point is 00:41:34 I was like, I've made it. Like, I called my mom crying. Like, I was like, I get to just sit in my sweats, talk on the microphone, and I have a wine sponsor. Like, a wine company is sending me free wine and paying me. Like, I'm living the dream. If there's one reason I went on that show, it was for this moment. Yeah. Well, congratulations.
Starting point is 00:41:54 Thank you. I'm reaching the pinnacle. Thank you. I'm like taking a bow. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Oh, and I actually have to bring this up because so somebody found a picture of me from
Starting point is 00:42:04 I think 11 years ago and they put it on my Facebook page my Off the Vine Facebook page and they're like Caitlin we need answers and it was me
Starting point is 00:42:11 with like the worst bangs like you've ever seen and I'm just like I just it's a funny picture and it says underneath it was a picture of me
Starting point is 00:42:21 on the news and it says underneath it Britney fan CBC News and everyone's like what it and I'm like shit where did you find that
Starting point is 00:42:28 I was on the news when I was 22 I think I was 22 or 23 and for being a Britney Spears fan I was like a big Britney fan and... Are you at a show? So my girlfriend and I were Britney fans
Starting point is 00:42:45 and we made this whole like little film about being a Britney fan and going around the city to find a snake to go around our neck and like we were going to dress like Brittany and go to this concert and she was on the radio at the time and so we made this video and then Word got around at her radio station and then it got to the news
Starting point is 00:43:03 And the news was like, oh, can we have you on to talk about how you're such a big Britney fan? So I really played it up. I'm like, I was a Britney fan and I still am, but I really played it up, not thinking it would ever go anywhere. And then BritneySfears.com put our video on their website, and I thought I peaked. I was like, I'm on the Britney Spears website and the 6 o'clock news. That's prime time. That's pretty awesome. I thought I peaked.
Starting point is 00:43:29 There was nowhere to go, but down from there and I was 22. and now I've got a podcast with a wine sponsor. So, you know, life's good. Life's good. Okay, so Georgia 282-0-000, ask him about his American band. Oh. What does that mean? Okay, so I had a band in Australia when I was playing there.
Starting point is 00:43:49 And it was my brother still and two of my best friends. Okay. And when I moved to America, they didn't come with me. Okay. I just moved by myself. Yeah. And I tried to put other bands together here. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:43:59 but it never felt quite didn't feel like my band it always just felt like some players and me and I had a loop pedal have you seen one of those no you basically record short sections of music
Starting point is 00:44:11 and they repeat over and over again yeah okay yes and then you do more sections and build it up yeah and so I have one of those and it's grown a lot and it's sort of this monstrosity now but I call it my American band
Starting point is 00:44:24 and so that's what George is referencing thank you Georgia they thank you That's funny I like that This is kind of funny Anthony Y said Will he be playing The Fire Festival this year
Starting point is 00:44:36 How good of those Document? Have you seen those? I started watching the other night I was just mind-blown Like I ended up falling asleep Because that's what I do When I watch any kind of show But that is mind-blowing
Starting point is 00:44:48 Isn't it? The whole thing Have you seen both? There's two I did I watched both I watched them on the road on planes Oh yeah I guess it's a good time to do it
Starting point is 00:44:56 Yeah It just how How does that happen? Every step of it to me is like, no, no. I know. But there's someone around this. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:07 I heard like Kendall Jenner's getting sued and stuff now for things. Really? Yeah, because I don't know. I guess there's this whole thing on Instagram where you need, if you're getting paid, you have to use the hashtag ad or you have to like. Oh, acknowledge that it's not your opinion. Right. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:23 And apparently she's getting sued for that. Because she didn't do it. Yeah. That is not a good one to not do that. Right. Yeah. And now all these, I mean, there's all this proof happening. It's fascinating, though. I mean, I'm glad I have nothing to do with it, but it is absolutely fascinating. I mean, it's so funny that people will just go to something. Like, you know, every, oh, supermodels are going to be there. I'm in. Like, people just go because they think these big names are going to be there. They have no information. And they just. It was really expensive, too. I couldn't get over that. I get $10,000 a ticket or something.
Starting point is 00:45:54 And how do these people think they're going to get away with it? I don't know. It's wild. I know. It's wild. I know. It blows my mind. If you haven't seen those, there's one on Netflix and one on Hulu. The Hulu one's better, right? Because it's more of like the business side of it rather than the entertain. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:46:08 I haven't seen it, but. They were both good to me. Okay. The actual guy is on the Hulu one, the actual organizer guy, is on that one. Okay. I'll have to watch that one. Well, I have to finish watching the Netflix one, too. I just ordered my Apple TV and got it in the mail, so I'm pretty excited about that.
Starting point is 00:46:21 Look at it. Sophie Marceau. Favorite tour so far, and who is your dream? person to tour with. I mean, they've all been great in their own way. My first one here was at Cole at start of last year, Colson Bell. And then I jumped on with Chris Young and Kane Brown. And then Dan and Shea swapped out with Kane Brown.
Starting point is 00:46:39 And now I'm out with Old Dominion. And I'm about to go out with Dan and Shea. So I feel like they've all been my list of people, you know. If there's anyone, though, I mean, I'd have to say. Keith Urban. Exactly. Yeah. That's like the childhood dream tour.
Starting point is 00:46:53 Did Kelsey get to sing with him? Am I remembering this correctly? She toured with him all last year. She did. Yeah. I don't pay attention to stuff clear yeah she toured with him all last year oh right right yeah oh yeah just kidding I got to see the show a bunch last year because of that so it was a good year that's awesome we'll see Lizzie asked if we're gonna day drink I'm embarrassed
Starting point is 00:47:12 that we're not drinking I'm usually better than that but again stuff to do I can't really drink and drive because that's illegal we could put Calua and the coffee I mean we could have yeah but I'm usually I usually Uber so I can drink yeah I'm really committed to the job respect that. Shannon Jonas says, besides family, what do you miss the most about Australia? The beaches probably. Yeah, probably the beach. It was one of those things that I did every day.
Starting point is 00:47:37 Yeah. I would wake up, go to the beach, surf or swim, whatever, if there was no waves, and then start the day. So without that in your life, it's kind of a big gap. The Cumberland River isn't really doing it for you here? I don't know what to fill it with. Yeah. I don't know how to fill that yet.
Starting point is 00:47:52 Like, the water's pretty grimy here, but I still go in it. Right in the Cumberland River? Yeah. I'm not oh I've been in there yeah yeah it's not I mean they say you shouldn't but you wouldn't travel to swim in the Cumberland river right right but if it's just right there yeah if you're on a boat and you're day drinking exactly hop on in Aaron wants to know if you and Kelsey would ever tour together uh yeah I think so for sure that would be so cute yeah a lot of people are just asking how you guys met but we already
Starting point is 00:48:20 we already went over that page wants to know what your favorite childhood memory is my favorite childhood memory. Yeah. There's a lot of those. I know, that's, I'm like, thinking for myself, I'm like, what's my favorite childhood memory? You know what? One of my favorite childhood memories is sitting on this big green chair with my nana, who's
Starting point is 00:48:42 not around anymore, and she loved horse racing. Yeah. I couldn't care less about horse racing, but she would make these biscuits, and we would sit there, and we would look, we would watch the horse racing together, and I would pick which horse I thought would win. That's a good memory. See, I love that. And that just made me think of my childhood memory where I would just watch the Golden Girls with my grandpa. There you go. And I wouldn't get the jokes, but I'd laugh so hard because my grandpa was laughing. And I really loved those moments.
Starting point is 00:49:09 It's the simple things. It is the simple things. God, I love it. Okay, well, that's all the questions I have. Am I missing anything? Do you want to say anything? Do you have any big announcements you want to release here on Off the Vine? Any breaking news that you want to share with us? I mean, I'm just going to be out there, so... Wait, I want to ask about your dog. Oh, yeah, dibs? Dibs. So cute.
Starting point is 00:49:32 He's a cute dog. I, yeah. He's the most affectionate dog I've ever met. What kind of dog is that? Well, he's supposed to be a Labradoodle. Oh, he is. Oh, he is. But Labradoodles are supposed to be really smart.
Starting point is 00:49:43 They're not supposed to shed, and they're meant to be medium-sized. Oh, and he's extra large. He sheds like crazy. Interesting. He's pretty dumb. I love a dumb dog, though. Yeah. It makes them even cute.
Starting point is 00:49:55 This morning, for example, he had to go back to the farm where he stays when we're not around because I leave again tomorrow today. But this morning, I woke up, the alarm went off. He jumped on bed, on the bed, like with his paws either side of me and started licking my face. That's the best alarm clock ever. And then he shuffled into like the spooning position. No. Like he pushed his back into, I was on my side. This dog's insane.
Starting point is 00:50:22 Wait, that sounds like the smartest dog ever. The most affectionate dog we've ever seen. I love that. I need to get me one of those. Yeah. Get yourself a dibs. I'm going to get myself a dibs. And where can people find your music and you and Instagram, Twitter?
Starting point is 00:50:35 Where are you at? What's your website? You can find it all on that? Yeah, it's Google, Kayle. Just type me into Google. Absolutely. Morgan Evans' music is me on Instagram and, yeah, come check it out. You'll probably find all the information and tour dates there too, right?
Starting point is 00:50:50 Absolutely. The website knows them way better than I do. What's the website? Morgan Evansmusic.com. Oh, okay, perfect. And then I usually end with a joke, but I forgot to write one down. Do you have one for me? Of a joke?
Starting point is 00:51:01 Yeah. You know what? I'm so bad remembering jokes or like actors or lyrics even. Oh, wow. There's this one time in Texas I played, and it was when I just started playing with the American band. And I hadn't really worked out how to use it very well, this pedal. And the pedal broke, and the guitar wasn't making any noise. And there's 5,000 people there was opening for Reba McIntyre.
Starting point is 00:51:23 This was like four years ago. It was one of my first kind of bigger shows in America in Sugarland, Texas. And I still meet people that were at that show because it was so memorable that nothing would work. And I was there by myself, had no crew, no management. Well, you had the American band, but they were failing you. Nothing. And so I looked at the side of the stage, no one there. Looked to the other side of the stage, no one there.
Starting point is 00:51:43 I put it down. And I just started talking. I had half an hour to kill. Stop. I was like, hey, you're going? And I had no joke. Half an hour you had to stand up there and talk? So I didn't.
Starting point is 00:51:52 But I didn't. I was like, well, I'm from Australia. It's really nice to meet you. I was here to play music, but I should probably tell some jokes. I don't know any jokes. So, how about this? And I started singing the American National Anthem. No. Do you know it? I actually had to sing it at a hockey game, so I knew it. Okay, perfect. And I sang the American National Anthem in Sugar Land, Texas, because I hadn't known jokes. That's, well, that's a joke in itself. There you go. That's my joke today. That's pretty funny. I just thought of one quick story before we end. This is my confession. I was DJing. I don't. DJ. They thought I was a DJ from City Strong from the events where I was like a like quote unquote DJ. Hi, girl. So Bumble hired me as a DJ for their event with Lady Antebellum. That's amazing. And so I was up on stage and basically just plugged in my like iPhone to the speaker
Starting point is 00:52:37 and had a playlist. And Kelsey came and she came up to say hi to me on stage and we were talking. And then she was like, oh, we'll put your number in my phone. And I went to text myself from her phone. and I said Kelsey and text it and sent it to the wrong number and so somebody out there got Kelsey Ballerini's number and saying Kelsey instead of me and I said and that was so embarrassing
Starting point is 00:53:03 that is I mean I thought you were going to say it came through the the PA system Oh well that was No I thought it was going to be much worse than it was Okay well then I'm okay Right yeah you're fine anyways Well that's my confession
