Here's Caitlin. Okay, welcome to Off the Vine. I'm your host, Caitlin Bristow today. I'm sitting down with a Canadian poet whose books have made him both an internationally bestselling author and a New York Times bestselling author. Not a big deal.
While he remains anonymous to his many fans choosing to wear a mask to hide his identity,
his words are known and even tattooed by people all over the world.
His Instagram at Atticus Poetry has a following of over 1.2 million,
including celebrities such as Carly Clause, Emma Roberts.
You can now get his recently released book, The Truth About Magic,
and listen to his poetry daily on his new podcast, Naked on Kashmir.
Please welcome to the podcast, Atticus.
Okay. First of all, your podcast, I got to hear like a little intro and I was like, I didn't know if I was turned on or falling asleep. I didn't know. It was like just so soothing. Like it was really, really relaxing. Amazing. Thank you.
We just have to talk about this right off the bat because you are this like masked poet. First of all, I didn't even, okay, I know you. I've known you for how many years? Like 12?
Yeah, probably 12 to 15 years.
I've known and I did not and I used to DM you as a fan and I was like ooh this little masked poet I'm going to slide into his DMs and I'd be like I'm such a fan of your work and then you would send me things and at one point you sent me something and you said beans which is my nickname the only really close friends call me and I was like what the heck and then I was like I guess Cleo probably told him like that's my nickname I don't know I don't remember even who I think Cleo told me but I've never been so shocked in my life because
I am like so, I've used your quotes and your poems on my Instagram.
I've like gone to your page in tough times and life.
And little did I know it's my friend that I could have just called.
And I still just cannot believe it's you.
And it's so fun for me that I get to podcast with you.
And nobody else knows what you look like.
But I'm just sitting here with my friend talking.
I love it.
I love it.
And I had no idea you didn't know.
So I'd message you all the time.
And I was just like, she's so supportive.
This is so amazing.
Oh, yeah.
I thought you were just being a brother.
Oh. Well, I was and I am. But it's so funny because, yeah, I would, I would literally just feel so on. I was so honored. I was in your first book.
Yeah, yeah. I was like, a thank you. And I was like, I've made it. Atticus acknowledged me. But it's just so funny. It's so, so entertaining to me that it's just like you're the masked man. And, and you just, people love your account. Like, I've seen really big celebrities commenting on it.
Yeah, it's been, I mean, a huge surprise. It's all.
It's still a surprise to this day.
How did you build that?
I don't know.
It kind of, have I ever told you how it started?
I guess I haven't told you anything.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, you know, as you've known me, I've never been a poet, and I never started out
to be a poet.
But I was in France, and I met an actor there, a guy named Michael Madsen.
Do you know who that is?
No.
He's like the bad guy in Kill Bill, the bad guy in Reservoir Dogs.
Bad guy in a Justin Bieber music video.
Yes.
Oh, my gosh.
Yes, he's really creepy looking, right?
Yeah, yeah.
He's just kind of like dark and mysterious and yeah.
Anyways, I spent a lot of time with him and found him to be one of the most profound humans I've ever met.
And he told me a lot about his like struggles with, you know, fame and addiction and whatever.
Yeah.
And how poetry had saved his life.
Really?
Yeah.
Wow.
Really?
Yeah.
And for me, here was this like American badass who wrote poetry.
And so I was in Paris a week later and I wrote my first poem.
No, wait.
So wait.
But because you kind of, I feel like knowing you and your family, you can't.
guys are all very creative in your own ways have you always was that like a shock to you that
you knew how to write a poem or was it something you just were like well of course I do because
I'm a good writer no I mean it was a shock and I certainly never expected people to want to
follow or anything like that for me it was just like a creative outlet and I wanted to like maybe
meet like minded people but yeah it really surprised me when people started following me
how did it blow up um just by people sharing yeah yeah I mean it happened slowly and
then some celebrities started following.
Shea Mitchell, I think, was one of the first.
And then, yeah, just, and then the tattoo thing happened.
People started getting it tattooed.
And then galore came out this magazine or this, this mag that said, most tattooable poet or something.
No way.
Yeah.
And that really, like, took things.
It's so cool because it's, I mean, it's your Instagram account, but you've actually
helped so many people now with this account and with your words.
Like, I see that you post things sometimes about, um,
like again tattoos for one but other like bringing people together and like you just changing lives
over there as a masked man oh yeah I mean it's just been I think it's just kind of a natural part of
the the story yeah I mean so many people messaged me every day with kind of their stories and
if I can help I certainly try to you know is that a lot to take on in your DMs I feel like that
be a heavy place to be sometimes yeah yeah it is and you know I mean I can't get back to everyone I mean
I'm sure you're the same.
It's like you do your best, but it would just, it would just kill you if you tried.
Yeah. So you just, yeah, do your best.
And why do you go, why do you want to keep your identity a secret is my question?
For me, I think it when I first started out, it was important for me to like, I think I was shy about it.
I think I was shy to be writing poetry and, you know, being vulnerable.
Yeah, I think so.
Okay.
And I didn't want it to bleed into the rest of my life.
And I think now as the accounts grown and evolved, you know, for me, it serves as like a reminder to keep writing, you know, poetry that what I feel and not what I think I should feel, you know, and not write for anybody else.
And that's like a fine balance, but I just try to do my best.
And did you do the love her but leave her wild?
That's your thing.
Yeah, yeah.
Like, that's like one of the most iconic phrases of all time.
Like, I feel like people are going to say that for millions of years.
And I was like, as soon as I saw that first one, I was like, that's me.
You know that like Reese Witherspoon moment when she's on like, what's that movie where she gets dumped and then she goes to like law school and becomes a little.
Oh yeah, legally blonde.
Legally blonde.
And she comes out.
I don't know.
I don't know.
But she comes out of the room and she goes, me.
That's what I just felt in that moment there.
I got really excited.
Yes.
I just love that you do the mask thing.
So do you ever worry that people are going to pull off your mask in like a like there's going to just some dick out there?
that just wants to ruin everything.
No, the world will always be, there will always be dicks out there.
But, you know, that's not important to me, you know.
And it's like, if someone does that, I'm just like, whatever.
You know, and like I showed up here without a mask.
Yeah, I was wondering if you're going to because I'm like, it's me.
But I want to obviously get like a picture or footage with, I can't leave you're the, I guess.
It would be so awkward if I was wearing the mask and you're like, I know you are, I guess.
I just about said your name to.
I know.
That's so hard not to.
Yeah, it's so hard not to.
Okay, so you have probably heard of the American Heart Association.
Well, I hope you have because I'd say the heart is a pretty important organ in the body, am I right?
Who's with me?
So the AHA is a relentless force dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke with a mission to bring the world longer and healthier lives.
They're here to give us a workout for the next 60 seconds, and we're going to do this together.
Everyone in the studio and everyone listening, vocally for me and physically for you.
Why? Millennial women tend to deprioritize their health, and that needs to change, so why not do
something about it right the second? So let's keep it simple. If you're sitting down right now,
get up. And if you repeat that motion a few more times, guess what? You're doing squats.
Standing for an hour burns way more calories than sitting, so if you're already on your feet,
don't sit down. Stay standing, dance, pace, floss. You know that move everyone's doing right now?
I didn't mean actual floss. Whatever you're feeling, but just keep doing it for the next 60s.
seconds. That's all I'm asking. We're standing up in the studio for the rest of the episode.
You're going to have to trust my word on that because you can't see us, but let's move around
together. So keep pacing or dancing or maybe even squatting. We just want that beautiful
heart of yours to be used. Check out some more facts on the American Heart Association's website
by visiting heart.org and start making moves. So you felt a little shy and vulnerable sharing your
words and then you just saw how many people it was helping and how many people loved it. And so
now you're still masked, do you think you'll ever
expose yourself?
Expose myself? That sounds so weird. That sounds very sexual.
Expose your face?
I mean, I don't think so. I don't think so.
No? No. Yeah, I mean, for me, it's like...
What if it was like you're like a...
Wow, the wine's moving around. I'm like, is that a ghost?
It's just melting and that's science.
But what if you're like, you know, you've lived such a good,
full life you're 106 years old on your deathbed and you're writing your last poem and you just
like shakily take off your mask and that's like the end of your Instagram career and that in that
case yeah yeah that would be the way to do it yeah I could totally see you doing that I feel like
I don't know in that case that would be such a powerful moment and I feel like oh wait I wonder if it's in
my notes I wrote a poem once no you did yeah I did did did you send it to me you should
DMed it to me. I should have because I was like, I was telling my last relationship how much I loved your poems. And I was like, I bet I could write one. Let's see if I still have it. Oh my gosh.
Oh my God. Can you share it with us right now? This would be such, um, okay, I have it. No, you have to share it with us. This is a really vulnerable right now. This is a really important moment. I like this. I want to know when I wrote this. Oh, 2017. Oh, my God. Okay, I have to set this up.
Because we always drank tea before bed.
That's cute.
And he never really liked tea.
Okay.
So I said, I love him because he drinks tea with me.
I love him because he never drank tea before me.
I love him because he doesn't know why he drinks tea.
I think he just enjoys that we do it together while laying in bed.
Just us too with tea.
And it relaxes him, which relaxes me.
So maybe it's not about the tea.
Maybe deep down it's about me.
And that's why I love him.
Oh wow
That's a banger
Oh my god
Oh can I steal it?
I think that would be
I thought I was going to be funny
I thought it was going to be like
I thought it was going to be like
It's kind of funny and it's kind of cute
And it's kind of just like
And then I read it back and I was like
Banger
Am I atticus?
Can you start an anonymous poetry account?
I think that would be very fun
That would be very competitive between us
We'd just stop being friends.
Yeah, it would ruin all of our years of friendship.
I go on a bachelor.
You're the masked bachelor.
That's how you reveal yours.
Wait, that would actually be so good.
But you're not single, are you?
No, I'm not single.
Damn, otherwise that would have been like a really,
do you have the same mask that you always wear it?
Yeah, I mean, I mix them up.
And for me, it's not about that mask or any mask.
Yeah.
It's just like about staying anonymous.
this one's just kind of happened serenipitously.
Yeah.
But I do have that mask, and I brought out today.
And if listeners out there are interested to start reading poetry and maybe even write it,
what are some poets you'd recommend reading?
Oh, good question.
I mean, my favorite poems, or favorite poets are like Robert Frost.
Okay.
Like Byron, Walt Whitman.
Sylvia Plath, if you're into the darker stuff.
I like dark.
Emily Dickinson.
Okay.
Oh, so you really do have some favorite poetry?
Yeah, but, you know, writers, I love Jack Kerouac and Pukowski, did I say, Pukowski?
I think so.
Hunter S. Thompson, yeah.
There's a lot.
Yeah, there's a lot, or I just repeated a couple.
I help people wrote that down.
Oh, no, there's a rewind button.
Yeah, and Caitlin.
I'm like, how am I going to remember this?
Go back and listen to it, Caitlin.
Write it down.
So where, when you're writing your poetry, like, where does your inspiration come from?
Is it stuff that you are feeling, or is it stuff that you read from other people, or is it
kind of a mixture of both?
Um, it's, it's definitely a mixture. I, you know, I try to draw on my own experiences as much as possible. Um, like my own relationships and like, you know, love, heartbreak. Yeah. All those fun things. Um, and then I try to imagine a lot. You know what it's like to be, you know, what would it be like to be an old man and like lose love your life or be like, you know, when you're first in love when you're a little, little kid and, and you're just like, this is going to last forever. This is my girlfriend forever. Yeah. And there's, I, I,
I love writing about that kind of thing.
Yeah.
It's just like so pure.
Yeah.
I'll never forget.
I fell in love with this guy named Travis.
God,
I feel like I brought him up in a couple podcasts lately.
I don't know where this coming from.
But he was like,
Travis.
He was like my first like,
I love him.
And I think I was 13.
Yeah.
And he was switching schools.
So he was going to a different junior high than me.
And I remember crying so hard in the shower thinking my life was over.
Yeah, because we were switching schools.
Yeah.
It's over.
You're never going to find love again.
Nope.
My heart turned black
And I never believed in love again
Because Travis went to the Leduc
Composite Junior High
And I went to Christ the King
That was the name of my school
Christ the king
No
Yeah
Wow
I went to a very Catholic school
Did you?
And I'm not Catholic
Really?
Yeah
Your mom was just like
I think this is a good school
I mean I got baptized
But I didn't
It was like
I had two options
There's Ladoque Alberta
I had two options
It was Christ the King or the Composite.
I mean, you should have gone to Leduc.
Your boyfriend's there.
I should have, but I was too scared of change.
Yeah.
Yeah.
At that age, you know?
Yeah.
I was so insecure when I was 12, 13 years old that I couldn't, I didn't even want to walk down a hallway
because I was too scared of people like looking at me.
Now I'm like, everybody pays attention to me.
Yeah, I was so shy.
Just down the red carpet.
Yeah.
I like roll out my own red carpet everywhere I go with a scrunchies on my arm,
whine in my end, just promoting myself.
So thirsty
That's funny
Your rosé's good
You like it?
I love it
Well
And you
Oh no
I can't say that
Because then people
Might figure it out
Yep
You've had it before though
I've had it before
Yeah
I can do your birthday party
Is that what you're trying
Not to say?
Yeah
I think we can say that
Okay
I had a few birthday parties
So you'll never know
Right right
You had 12
12 birthday parties
Isn't that what girls do
That's my birthday month
It's a very like
California thing to do
I think
L.A. It is?
L.A. for sure.
It's like you talk about your signs and have a birthday month.
Yeah, you're just like, well, it's my birthday month.
We're going to start ramping this up.
Right. And then you just talk about how much of a Gemini you are.
Yeah. Are you a Gemini?
Yeah.
Oh, my new girlfriend's a Gemini.
Really? What's her birthday?
Don't make me say that. It's May 26th.
Wait, that's. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay, so because I think June 20th is then cancer or June 21st, and I'm the 19th.
Oh, yeah.
I feel like I'm a little bit of both.
Oh, you're right on the edge.
Yeah.
Maybe you have traits of both.
Yeah, I think I do.
Like, Geminizer, is she crazy?
Like, in a good way.
She's not that crazy, but she's, I know Gemini's are supposed to be crazy.
But she did read me like, this is what a Gemini is supposed to be, and it was like, exact.
Really?
Yeah.
How long have you guys been together?
A year.
Oh, yeah.
What are you?
Scorpio.
Oh, so is my boyfriend.
Really?
Yeah.
Scorpions are good.
That's, like, one of my favorite signs.
I mean, I like being a Scorpio, but often I'll say it, and people are like, oh, you're a Scorpio.
Because some of them are hot-headed.
That's true.
But not all of them.
No.
And we're very loyal.
Very loyal, very passionate.
Yeah.
And I'm going to say it, Atticus likes sex.
They're sexual beings.
That's true.
Yeah.
Jemina's are too.
Yes.
Gemini and I are doing just fine, okay?
You guys do.
But yeah, they're like,
But there are some...
Oh, that's trippy.
Yeah, it is actually.
And you know what's crazy is Jason's mom is Gemini and his dad is also Scorpio.
Whoa.
Yeah.
Oh, that is trippy.
Yeah, that is weird.
Yeah.
Now, I'm like, what are my parents?
I don't know, but they didn't work.
So I won't, whoa.
We don't need to go there.
I'll start crying.
Bring out my bath.
Get my therapist in here.
You should have your therapist just sitting by and, like, commenting.
That'd be a funny episode.
Look at this picture of Jason when he calls.
It's for him when he was little.
is that not the best
that is
does he have any teeth at all
none
or just a really bad
tooth to gum ratio
I'm not sure
what's happening
but the glasses
are my favorite part
isn't he just
look like a little
cutie
oh my gosh
I need to post that
on Instagram
because I've talked
about it so many times
when he calls during
podcasts I always
like do you know
who Nikki Glazer is
yeah
Nikki went
ham chirping that photo
when he called
she was like
oh dear God
she like went off
about how like actually it was very inappropriate about like molestation and I was like
I'm probably gonna have to edit that part out but she is a treat he's got the Matt Damon
glasses on too yeah the Matt Damon guy yeah mr. Ripley and he looks like the um frog from
little rascals like you know the guy with the frog you voice or no the little giants the guy
that flexes in the mirror totally what he looks like um okay back to you um I actually wanted to know
if you had any formal education in like writing
um not not before so this is what to happen
I never I grew up and I studied actually like business going to school
because that's what you know you're supposed to do right
and it wasn't later until I started getting interested in this stuff
and then I got invited to to take some courses at Oxford
and I've taken yeah so I've taken a bunch of poetry courses at Oxford
and like pretty much all it taught me was how little I know about
about poetry but you know i think it's good to know at least know the rules if you're if you're
going to try to break them yeah all right so i have to admit i use my phone a lot like it's warning me
about my screen time usage again a lot i'm using it to keep in touch with friends and family
take photos of my dog because that's what kind of dog mom i am test and answer emails to live
without it even for a day would be next to impossible so the idea of it falling and breaking is
terrifying to me. And looking at all those hardcore protective cases out there feels like in order

little sister you did yeah so when my little sister was getting married yeah um she uh asked me to write a
poem for her and her husband and so i wrote this one poem okay can you tell to me um i can find it actually
yeah yeah find it oh you have all of your books no you don't do oh i send them to you yeah yeah
And one of my favorite sweaters that I wear all the time is that um lost poet sweater no way you
all the time all the time oh my god I love you people people even ask me like where do you get that and I send them to you
really yes I love that sweater okay I'm ready all right uh it's called my fate okay
does the sun promise to shine no but it will even behind the darkest clouds and no promise will make it
shine longer or brighter for that is its fate to burn until it can burn no more so to love you is not
my promise it is my fate to burn for you until i can burn no more god damn that just hit me right
in the fields that is that is good oh thank you yeah wait that actually just i don't i get like
moved by poetry i really do yeah well that's because i was i mean yeah i was such a huge fan of you
not knowing you were my friend yeah it's funny because i know
never really. I always like to do, okay, here's Caitlin. Oh, that's cool. I don't want to do it.
Yeah. Oh, you guys are all watching Game of Thrones. Well, I'm not going to watch it because I try and be this tough guy who doesn't want to do what everybody's doing. So then I was like, oh, girls always do like. What? Gemini.
Yeah, totally. You're such a Gemini, Caitlin. But same thing with when I started liking poetry. It was like I tried not to because I was like, well, all these girls always just do like these poetry like under their selfie captions. And I.
I got, like, annoyed at it.
And then I was like, why am I like that?
Like, why am I just?
I love poetry.
And then now I just own it.
I'm like, I love poetry.
You're amazing.
Thank you.
Yeah.
No, thank you for your gift.
There he is.
Lo, come here.
Oh, my God.
This is going to be so funny.
So here's a backstory.
We can't get him to say your name.
Hey.
Hey, do you remember who this is for my birthday?
Yep.
Yeah, that's Atticus.
Oh.
But don't say.
name and don't say anything but because we're still good but isn't that nuts full circle moment
oh my godica yes yeah come pull up a chair i'd look to perfect i love it okay but isn't that so
crazy it's so funny we were putting it together okay he um oh my gosh i keep wanting to say your name i
can't atticus i've known since i was 19 years old i'm 34 oh wow and i didn't even know so so i would
slide into his DMs being like I love your work like I love what you do and your words change me
and he was like thanks beans which is my nickname like he thought I knew and then I was like oh
somebody must have told them that's my nickname okay and then he would send me stuff you sent me wine
you sent me all your books he gave me a thank you and years and I thought she I figured she knew
and I had no idea you're like we're kind of dating like yeah so then so then Cleo was like
saying something about it and she said who
And she was like, well, you know, he's Atticus.
And I was like, imagine.
And then she's like, no, he really is.
And I was like, honestly, floored.
My eyes started watering.
I was like shaking.
I was like, are you kidding me?
This makes me so happy.
My good friend is Atticus.
And I have not known.
Finkel is Einhorn.
The Einhorn is Finkel.
That's it.
Einhorn is Finkel.
Finkel is Unkel.
I had tacos with Atticist.
Yes, you did.
We had some great tacos.
I had a margarita with Atticane.
Yes, you did.
Changes the game.
Yeah, and you were just, you didn't even know it.
I had no idea.
I thought you knew too.
No, I would have definitely been talking your ear off a bit.
This is adorable.
When Lowe said he was coming in and I said, you were podcast and he goes, should I
rip off his mask?
Is he going to be wearing his mask?
And we came in, I was like, I was like nervous for you.
You were sitting on the couch.
I'm like, you're so.
exposed right now.
Yeah.
Oh, you probably want a glass of wine, hang.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Get into it.
We'll be back with more Off the Vine
with Caitlin Bristow.
You're listening
to Off the Vine with Caitlin
Bristow.
So you have three books,
Love or Wild,
The Dark Between Stars,
and your most recent The Truth
About Magic,
which just became a New York Times
bestseller.
It did.
Wow.
Congratulations.
That's huge.
That is insane.
It was a huge surprise.
And so when you, now, when you do these media tours and signing books, you just wear the mask.
I wear the mask, yeah.
So cool.
And so those are two huge things.
I'm like, how did you do that?
What was the writing process?
Did you just like took all your best material or how did you make all three books different?
Yeah, I mean, it's a good question.
So for these last two books, I wanted to like really feel like what it was like to be a poet.
And so it was really important to me.
So I actually moved to France or Paris for a few months.
And I lived in this tiny little attic and I wrote every day.
Wow.
Wait, is that how you came up with Atticus?
Because you were in an attic?
Oh, my God.
That is a good.
It's not.
I like it, though.
No.
Grasping it strong.
Hold on at root word.
Attic.
Attic.
Should I say this from now one?
I should say this.
I thought that's what it.
I like it.
Okay.
Well, how did you come up with the name?
I've always liked the name.
Oh.
And then I later learned that there was this nation in ancient Greece, the Attacons from Attica, who were philosopher poets.
But that's not why I named Adacus.
I just like the name.
Is that the hot dudes from 300?
You know.
It was all really hot dudes doing poetry.
Yeah.
Just like fighting.
I can get it on that.
You should come to our ancient nation.
Yeah.
I actually feel stupid now that I said that.
Anyways, back to the attic in Paris.
Tell me.
Tell us about the attic in Paris.
I mean, it was amazing.
It was tiny as it probably should be.
And it was like up these spiral staircase at five floors.
And it just opened up with a giant window over the rooftops of Paris.
No way.
Yeah, every day I'd wake up and drink coffee and just like write.
And then I'd wander around the streets of Paris and just writing.
Do you need anything like an edible or any sort of mushroom perhaps to get a
get in the like artistic mindset to go or just coffee i think it's like it coffee helps me a lot
just like get get creative yeah like like what's your what's your starbucks order or i mean if
you go to like he goes to starbucks maybe atticus he drinks coffee and paris and attic while writing
poetry i'm sure he wouldn't turn down a little tim snortons okay tiff snortons
i've never heard that before i haven't either but yes we are canadian so he would like
Tim Horton.
Yeah.
Okay.
I mean,
I'm just curious what your go-to.
Honestly,
it's like I go for a,
it's pretty consistently like a medium roast.
And I've experimented a lot and I just come back to that.
If I'm writing,
it's a medium roast.
It's just,
you know,
sometimes when you drink coffee,
like it's like a random espresso or it's like a light roast or dark roast.
You know,
this is not working for me.
But like those,
yeah,
like a Hawaiian one or something.
You should write a poem about medium roast.
I should write about Tim Horton's.
That's right.
double double that's what you should write about do americans know what tim hortons is it's a
canadian yeah i do yeah but i mean i surround myself with the most beautiful canadian
i love them so much he does love it he calls all of his Canadian friends his little
maple treats yeah well actually that that's for you i used it with some uh-uh i saw you
don't you even dare say that you only use it for me i saw you call another girl a Canadian
maple treat and I got mad I like right after we met you called me a Canadian
Damn it low
But Tim Horton's like the crispy cream of Canada
No, it's the Dunkin' Donuts
It's the Dunkin' Donuts
Yeah, it's a Dunkin' Donuts
Crispy cream
Have you ever?
I mean, of course I have
With the light on
Yeah
I heard it's like
The light on
Yeah, when the light's on
It's they're coming fresh out of the oven
And that's when you go in
That's when you get one
Do they still have crispy creams
That kind of was like a blip in the world
I mean they're very much
in Tennessee.
Oh, yeah.
They're here too.
They're here too. There's one in Burbank.
Oh, yeah. You do see them.
Oh, yeah. I've been through that drive-through.
I've been through that drown through.
Get a little crisper cream.
I just, this is a weird question that I just wanted to ask you, but what's the biggest
celebrity that's commented on your stuff?
Probably one of the Kardashians.
Yeah.
I feel like I remember seeing one where I was like, oh, dang, Chloe did?
I think so, yeah.
Was it like a poem about, like, being betrayed or?
It was like strength about women
And I think she's been going through it
Yeah
Yeah
That's so cool
I appreciate that
I mean it's always a huge surprise
Like like when Alicia Keys has
Oh that's
Wow like that you know
Because she's a brilliant writer herself
I know exactly
Like you know that that's
If that spoke to her
And she felt something and wanted to comment or like
Yeah
Our world is so fucking weird
We are weird
She wanted to comment
like it.
But, like, what a cool time to be alive.
I'm a little bit more.
What a great time where you can put your art out there.
And someone like Alicia Keys in her loft in Soho, that's what I just assume where she's
reading it or looking at.
You're probably right.
Yeah.
Just such a giant mansion.
Grand piano.
Yes.
And she's like, oh my God, this spoke to me.
Like, like.
Yeah.
She doubled.
Yeah.
That's a cool thing.
I think there's a double-edged sword to social media and that's like.
You're right.
There's, I talk about that all the time.
on the podcast is that there's so many beautiful things that can come through social media,
so much inspiration, and then there's so much shit.
And getting your art out there, like, exactly, like you said.
And then it's like not being able to get back to everybody on the comments.
That does kill me.
Like, I have been known to call out some haters.
And then people are like, I really love you.
And I've sent you so many messages about how you've changed my life and you respond to Patty.
And I'm like, oh, dang, you're so right.
And then so if I ever have the urge to write to Patty,
I'm like, now go right to a bunch of the, like, sweet...
Yeah, sweet Amy's.
Yeah, sweet Amy.
That is a sweet name.
Yeah, thanks.
Amy.
That's what came to me when I thought of...
Pissed off Patty.
Pissed off Patty.
I always called myself a positive Patty, and now I'm like, fuck that.
Pissed off Patty.
I'm still talking about her.
God damn it.
She loves this right now.
She's such an invested hater, too, that I'm like, she's probably listening to the podcast.
Wait, is this a real thing?
You have a hater named Patty.
Yeah.
Oh, my gosh.
She's been harassing me for three years.
And you just, you don't block her or anything?
She creates new accounts if I block her.
So I stop blocking her because I'm like, you know what, Patty, your comment is adding to my engagement, which gets up my followers and which, you know, the ads look at these things.
Oh my God.
Does it ever backfire against people?
It's so fun.
They have no idea that like their like hate speech just gets like it's a good, like it gets you more.
I always wonder.
I always wonder who are these people.
Who is negative, you know, pissed off Patty?
Who is this woman?
But then I went to Montana recently, and I actually got to see a lot of pissed off patties.
And I realized there they are.
Hiding in Montana.
And Billings, Montana.
Yeah, you were just there.
Yeah, these people are like, well, so anyone listening from, I'm like, this place is a dump.
No, I'm kidding.
I love Montana.
It's beautiful.
It is beautiful.
It is beautiful.
Billings, not so fun.
There's not a lot to do there, you know, but people like to fight actually, just to
People like to fight.
Like, they're looking.
Online and offline?
Yeah.
Like in the streets?
Yeah, I just think that sometimes there's not a lot to do.
The streets of the web?
So you get a little bored and you kind of want to have a little fun or have a voice that's heard because you're living on 12 acres and the closest thing to you is a sonic burger.
You know, sometimes you need to like duke it out with Caitlin Birstro.
You know?
I mean, at the end of the day, it gives you, it gives them like a fulfillment.
And it makes them feel heard.
and it's like I met a lady there
and she had a shirt that said Hillary is a
see you next Tuesday
she was wearing that on her shirt
wow very strong
thing to say yes
but I basically
was like why are you wearing that
you know just like
can I just stop for a second
we're not recording this right
okay amazing okay that's all I was asking
oh shit
get the mask live stream
I'm like you're real
I'm going live
going live
live streaming
just like
blowing your cover
and ruining
your whole career
no I would
know it's like
reping off Cia's wig
oh
can't do it
did someone do it
no
oh I hope not
I met her
you did
yes so I did an event
for
a jewelry line
that she was doing
Pandora
and we did this
we hosted an event
she was the main host
and I was her little
like nobody
that had
like an influence on the internet she's like an actual like talent and I'm like you know I have
followers um but it was so funny because she is a presence that woman she is so tall and just like
travels with a team around her and her hair is just like oh and I'm just I've always been
inspired by her because of her dance moves and I would used I used to watch Sierra videos we're
talking about Sierra right that's who we're talking about I can't handle you right now
Sierra? No, Quain, we're talking about Sia.
I don't want Sierra!
When you're like, dance moves, I'm like, she just stands there and, like, hires Maddie Ziegler to dance for her.
But I was like, I need to see this dance dance dance.
Like her long hair, I'm like, I think she has like a short more Ellen vibe, but I don't know, because she wears the wigs.
But, okay, well.
That's amazing.
Sierra has really resignated with her.
I love Sierra, too.
I'm blotching.
I don't get embarrassed.
She's like when she freaking twerks on stage.
But she's another, she's like, I love Sierra though.
But she's amazing.
Screw that topic.
But Sia is kind of does the same thing as you.
She doesn't want to be recognized.
And she does this whole wig thing.
And I love that about her too because it's like you want to share your art and you want to be respected for it.
But you don't want all the attention.
No, because.
I started the story with, it's like ripping off Cia's wig, and you're like, oh, yeah, thinking, like, in your head, you thought someone ripped Sierra's wig off on stage.
You're like, I love her.
And I'm like, oh, wait, what?
Wow.
No, it was just like my chance to, like, step in and have like a name dropping moment.
It was permanent.
I'm going to let you have it.
I was like, that one time I hung out with Sarah.
Yeah.
She was really cool.
I'm embarrassed.
Let's get back to you.
Okay.
Don't get back to Atticus.
No, but you are right, and Sia, like, has an incredible, I know about Sia.
Oh, about Sia.
And, actually, it reminds me, I was doing one of these events, and somebody stood up, and they're like, they're like, you know, in a world that's, like, obsessed with, with recognition.
I think it's beautiful.
You're choosing to send love from the shadows.
Yes.
And, I mean, that's a great way to put it.
I mean, it was a beautiful thing to say.
I was like, oh, is that copywritten?
Can I put that on my next Instagram post?
All right, so you all know I've been focusing a lot lately on being healthier or at least trying,
and it's really not about weight for me.
I know that when I eat better and work out, I just feel a hundred times better, both physically
and mentally, but sometimes it can be really, really hard to accomplish and develop those
habits to be your healthiest self.
And Noam is one program for all of your health and weight loss needs.
No more searching for training apps, calorie trackers, meal plans.
Noom has it all, plus a goal specialist and a community of members to keep you motivated.
with newm i really have noticed a lot of change in my life already it's done a lot for my mind
and the way i feel about my body last week for example i use newm to make better choices when
dining out and i tracked my workouts i feel like having newm there to guide me is really making
the difference for me to kind of get on track sometimes i find like it's really hard for me to make
good choices especially while at restaurants i just get very very tempted but newm is helping me
on that front plus they don't shame you when you get off track like i tend to do every now and
Again, my bad.
The really cool thing about Noom is that it has helped me break certain patterns.
This is because it's interactions with goal specialists and the other Noom members.
It feels like I'm kind of part of that community, and people are holding me accountable, which I need.
It's also super easy and convenient to use.

The weight loss program you'll need. Do you feel pressure or do you feel less pressure because
people don't know who you are? I think I feel less pressure and I feel like I can be more truthful and I think
I, you know, it's like liberating like you're a little more free. Yeah, of course. Because I'm just like,
you know, I'm not, I'm not blending it with the rest of my life. Yeah. And I'm just trying to keep
it about the words and not about me and like that's what's, you know, important. It's, you
You must have, oh, sorry.
No, no, no.
Mine was so stupid.
I was going to say, you must have a good past with exes and stuff like that.
Like, they must really like you.
Because if I dated you and you did me dirty, I'd be like, I know who he really is.
You know what I'm saying?
Like, no one's done that.
No one's done you dirty.
Oh, because I know your ex.
I feel like she would do that.
She hasn't outed you?
No.
Well, I mean, I wrote the first book about her, so I don't think she's anxious to.
Oh.
Oh, okay.
Okay.
Well, good words.
That's nice that no.
Yeah.
It is nice.
Respectful.
It is.
Yeah, because how many people would you say no?
Like, your close friends and family?
Yeah, close friends and family.
My little sister followed me for two years and had no idea.
You're lying.
No.
Oh, my gosh.
I almost said her name, but no.
No way.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, my gosh.
Did she freak out when you told her?
Yeah, I came back for Christmas one time, and she started talking about how she was following
this guy named Atticus, and that, that, that, that, that,
that I could use a little more
of vulnerability in my life. She literally said
this to me. This is perfect.
Oh, no way.
Yeah. And she's like, you just got to
get more in touch with this side of yourself.
And I was like, okay, good idea.
I'm like, what's his?
You should have just...
You like log into his Instagram
and write your next poem right there.
Yeah, yeah, you block her.
It's like, oh my God,
it just blocked me.
You should have, yeah, you should have messed with her a little bit.
That's crazy. So then how did you find out?
It was like a few, like a year later that she was getting married.
So she said all this to you and then didn't find out until a year later?
Yeah, I didn't tell her. Yeah, I was like, oh, that would kill me. I'm not good with secrets.
Yeah. I'll tell you everything. I'll be like, I'm like, everybody, atticus is. I just ruin it right now.
No, but I'm just not good. I'm not good. If they're huge, very important to somebody's heart, if that's a secret, I will not.
But, like, if my sister, I was like somebody on Instagram that she would, yeah, I wouldn't be, I would just mess with her for a good five hours and then tell her, yeah, it's me.
This was at a time where I was literally telling nobody.
Wow.
It was like right when I was first starting.
Yeah.
Yeah.
These are early days.
Early days.
Yeah.
Okay.
Like my space was still relevant.
No, I haven't.
Atticus didn't start that long ago.
It was like four or five years ago.
Okay.
Yeah.
Oh, that's so wild.
And so now you started a podcast.
Yeah.
You listen to it.
Yeah.
I love you.
Thank you.
I honestly, I'm telling you, I was saying, I was like, I don't know if I was turned on or wanted to go to sleep.
It was just like this, like, your voice is.
Oh, mom.
Your voice and it was just so the way, even when you just read that one poem that you did for your sister, like, your voice is very calming.
And you, you know when you like, obviously it's your own art, so you know how you want to say it.
But it's just the way you deliver it to.
but this podcast is so calming and there's like calming music in it and just the way you speak and it's what it um what's called again
naked on cashmere it's supposed to feel it's supposed to feel good oh wow yeah yeah downloading now
yeah you did a really good job and i think what people will love too is that it's it's quick like
yeah it's a poem a day it's supposed to be really really short and it's just supposed to be this like
moment that you take for yourself where it's calm where it's like in the morning or like on the way to work
like before you go to sleep people are uh i'm getting such cool messages of people like playing it to
their kids that before they go to sleep and like things like that yeah i do really love that i think
it's it's like kind of a meditation almost yeah i'm i'm very much into guided meditations
where i need like a voice and talking me through something and my favorite thing is sleep stories
oh cool so i love listening to a sleep story and then so for your podcast i'm like this is perfect
It's just like this moment where it just like kind of puts you in the right relaxed.
I love you, love it.
Thank you.
It's been, it's been really fun to build and see you grow.
And where can people find the podcast?
Anywhere, yeah, Apple or just wherever people listen to podcasts.
People get podcasts or just Google Atticus naked on cashmere.
Okay, yeah.
Oh, that's so amazing.
I love it.
You should listen.
You're going to love.
I need that in my life.
If you Google naked on cashier, all sorts of images might come up.
Hopefully mine.
It's you.
a rug with a mask on.
Yeah, have you ever been exposed?
Like, what do you mean?
Exposed.
Exposed myself?
Why do I keep saying exposed?
Like, nobody's ever caught you?
Like who I am or whatever.
Yeah.
I mean, I mean, I don't know.
I don't know if they have.
I haven't heard about it.
But it's like, yeah, again, it's like I don't care.
It's not important to me.
It's like, for me, it's like more of a symbol of sort of like write what I feel and be
vulnerable and to just like be truthful.
It goes with your like messaging.
Like, it's just, it's about the words, you know?
And if anybody exposed to me, I'm just like, you got to be some sort of dick to do that.
Because it's like, like, I don't want to, I don't want recognition.
You know, it's like, it's coming from a place of like I don't want recognition.
You know what?
Well, God, why does my mind go to the stupidest places?
I'm remembering a time when I was on Bachelorette and I came off.
And this guy, Trevor, who I had been hanging out with before going on the show, everyone was like, oh my God, she had a boy for.
before going on the show and I'm like well I mean we did definitely hang out and he was
blah blah like in my life and he was really upset I went on the show because I was like but I ended it
with him I was like and now it's a big deal if you have on it you know people just but he was so cool
because he was like I want nothing to do with this but people flew to Victoria BC and um
Pavarazzi was following him around and putting him out on the internet and he was like
Caitlin I don't want anything to do with this and he like felt and I'm like you he
this is why it's a stupid story
I'm like just trying to relate it back to like
why would somebody do that
if he's like like he wasn't thirsty
he didn't want to be recognized
he didn't want people to know I was
dating him before the show
and you've got to be like kind of an
asshole like a paparazzi to go and try
and like dig fly to Victoria BC
to get a picture of him without a shirt on
oh my god
it takes effort worth it
that's like a lot of flights
but it's a lot of flights yeah
Yeah, there's no direct.
Not at all.
They either took a fairy.
Like, that was really, they were very committed.
Yeah.
And that's, that's the other thing.
It's like, you know, my publisher's always like, you know, you should, you should announce
who you are, say who you are.
It's like, you know, the popularity would increase and all this stuff like that.
And you're like, that's not what I'm about.
And so, like, you know, if haters want to do that and they're just like, and it becomes
more popular.
Right.
Then more haters will come out of it.
That's true.
Yeah.
wild to even because in the time that we're in right now i mean there's so many apps and everything's so
accessible that that you've been able to like keep it yeah under wraps yeah that's really
impressive i love it i hope that lasts forever yeah until you're 106 on your deathbed doing that last
i'll send you a i'll send you a pick be near yeah yeah i'll be just be beside you on your
bed i'll be like getting that last i'll be like now turn your head a little bit to the left
I want to know who it is.
You'll still be doing the podcast.
There he is.
I have you.
I like use it as an opportunity for downloads.
I'm like, he's on his deathbed and I'm going to expose him.
He's dying any minute now.
He doesn't have much less.
Exo, XO, Gossip Girl.
Yeah, yeah.
Don't forget to leave a rating and review.
Oh, he's passed away just in front of us and, uh, yeah, just leave your five stars.
Yeah.
I got the last.
I am the Barbara Walters of podcasting.
Okay, I know you know that I do confessions on my podcast.
Yes.
I'm wondering if you have a good one for me.
Lowe, you better have come prepared.
Lowe has the best confessions ever.
Okay.
You know what, though?
There's so much pressure in society and just in general with the confessions because I put
it out there and now I feel like I have to keep upping
the game and I mean I already do things that are quite questionable
I don't think I'm the best person
character wise at times
and I
love that we're so close
but I mean I don't know last time I was here
I was like I should just like shit on your bed
to be like I'm just
I'm gonna yeah something crazy like I killed someone
like that was you
yep surprise
great content these stories yeah people are like we want more
We want more.
Mine's stupid.
I was wearing a onesie yesterday, and it was one of the most hungover I've been in a long time.
I don't really get hungover.
And I went to go to the bathroom.
I was just so like, and I pulled down the onesie.
And you know you have that shameful moment anyways when you are in a onesie peeing in a bathroom
because your whole body's exposed and you're like, ah.
Yeah.
I didn't realize until the end, my whole sleeve was just in the toilet and I peed on it on my whole sleeve.
and then I was finished and I looked down and I was like oh no and I still had to go into all these media things no yes I was on a media tour for Brett Kisle's music video and so I was like I just peed all over this sleeve and now I have to go to Ben and Ashley's podcast smelling like pissing like piss did you give it a little rinse off or what did you do um I patted her down yeah that's sick dab dab no and then I had the option to change when I went
home but I went out for dinner
you thought you looked fresh
it was a really cute jumpsuit
it's like kind of like stiff now
yeah yeah a little bit
ramen peed on it like making his mark
because he smelled the pee
did he really? No I'm just kidding
oh my god
then I just blame him I'm like yeah tooi
that's what the pee smell was
yeah so that's mine I don't have a good one
lo you have to go first you're going to think of something
okay well okay let me
think. Let me just go into my little rolodex of moments. I don't know if I have it. Usually people
confess a situation of some sort. Oh, I shit myself or whatever. I don't know. I don't have
something like that at the moment. I might on the next one. But what I, I will confess something.
That counts, right? Yeah, of course. And it's not a popular opinion. And it's going to make me look
really bad. Oh, no. But I want to confess it. Trump 2020. Oh, my God. I'm just kidding.
I'm a Republican.
The show goes off the air.
Oh, my God.
No.
Well, I'd say this is right up there with it.
But I have reasoning why.
So my confession is I don't really like homeless people.
You're savage.
Okay.
Yeah, that's a homeless person calling you right now.
They're everywhere.
But here's, I know.
Boy, hold on.
Because before you, like, everyone hates on me.
I'm hating you right now.
Teresa judging me over here.
Canadian kindness.
They don't call me Mother Teresa.
I will say this.
I, and I'm working through it because it's fear-based.
That's why I don't care for the homeless community.
I know we're all just one paycheck away from being on the streets ourselves, you know?
Yeah.
But I've had a situation or several, but the one last one is the reason why, and I'm working
through it. But, long story
short, Cliff Notes version. I was
in Santa Monica, and
it was gridlock traffic.
And this guy gave
a knock on the thing. Hey,
got some money. I didn't have any
cash on me. He didn't have a chip
available.
You didn't have a insert my card.
And he wanted to, like, wash my windows
or something. He looked like he was
maybe on something. Meth, heroin,
whatever. No judgment.
Anyway, he, he
he uh he was really pissed that i didn't have money like really freaking pissed so he climbed on top of
my car oh reasonable reasonable now mind you car on the left right side of me front and back we're just
sitting in traffic and i'm like oh shit sorry hong kong like get off pulls his pants down no he takes
a shit on my hood no he didn't you're lying no no no i'm not and you didn't instagram story this
I was screaming and freaking disgusted.
No, I didn't, I didn't think to share it on my story.
Now, this is Caitlin coming in with, because I work with the Covenant House in the homeless youth.
So I'm like, well, because I'm like, but think about what he's been through in his life.
No, here's the thing.
He takes a big old dumpy making direct eye contact with me.
Yeah, he was facing me, holding kind of balancing on my windshield, you know.
That's bad.
And then hawked a luggy, spit it at the window, hopped off, pulled up his pants.
That guy gives zero f***.
Oh, I know.
That is crazy.
A brave moment, I must say, very brave of him.
But ever since then, I don't want to say don't like homeless people.
That's terrible.
It's fear-based.
Okay.
But I am scared of homeless people, and I have a little bit of a phobia now.
Like, oh, my God.
Like, I always think some of it.
I always think something's going to happen.
Yeah.
So that's my confession.
Okay.
It's a little too real.
I'm going to take you.
in November, yep, and you're going to come with me
to the Covenant House in Vancouver
and we are going to sleep outside for a full night
and you're going to hear the homeless youth stories
and it will change your mind. Promise.
All right.
Wow.
Yeah.
Well, no one shit on my car.
Did you shit on someone's car though?
That's my confession.
You're like, so was downtown.
I'm like, oh my God, it was you.
Cleans up nice.
my one's totally ridiculous and it's so PG it's gonna like compared to getting shit on it's so ridiculous
but i went to this this thing recently and it was like it was like uh um it's called the hoffman
process have you ever heard this thing oh my god what is that it's like this whole thing it's supposed
to be like 10 10 years of therapy in seven days yes it is like life changing my girlfriend went
our girlfriend went yeah yeah is this like an uh Oprah did it because there's one that she did
Justin Bieber did.
Katie Perry did.
Yeah,
that's true.
It's like,
it's like,
like you said.
Katie's Perry swears by it.
It's like the best thing
she's ever done.
So it's a retreat.
Yeah,
it's a retreat.
And you like just deep dive.
It's expensive,
but there are scholarships and things.
And then you have a community after.
And you get a community after.
And you deep dive into mostly like
dealing with like parental issues and patterns and like making sure you don't pass
those patterns on.
Oh,
wow.
But anyways,
to the confession.
And it's so stupid.
stupid, but it's like, this literally made me die laughing.
And you might appreciate Caitlin, because you're just like a kid, kind of like me.
Yeah.
We, we, like, at one point, you just, like, have to, like, start playing these games and, like,
remember what it is like to be a kid?
And do you remember that game where you walk around a room and then the teacher, like,
chooses one person to be the murderer?
And you, like, wink at people.
Like, like heads up, seven up.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, it's kind of like everybody walks around the room and the teacher picks one person to be
the murderer.
Yeah.
And they just wink at people.
Yeah.
Oh, yes.
You, like, wait a few seconds, and then that person, like, falls down and dies in a really dramatic way.
Yeah.
He did that?
So, yeah, we were playing this game.
I never played that.
I haven't played fun.
I literally haven't played this since I was, like, you know, 10.
Yeah.
But anyway, they're like, everyone closed their eyes and we're going to come around and squeeze one person's shoulder to be the murderer.
And so they're doing it.
And I go to this guy standing in front of me.
He's like a goofball.
I don't know him at all.
Yeah.
And I just, like, squeeze his shoulder.
and so they're like okay everyone open their eyes and they start walking around the room
and he goes on this murder spree killing everybody and no one can figure out like who's the
murder because like everybody's dying I don't know why but I was just like I just thought
it was the funniest thing I remembered what it was like to be a kid and it's like it's so stupid
but it was like I actually find that really funny because it's like
This idiot is going around, just, like, winking everybody, literally killing.
And, like, people are dying all around and, like...
You ruined the whole game.
You ruined that game, the whole game.
The whole game.
And, like, some people couldn't deal with their parents issues because of this game.
It's like a $20,000 exercise.
Yeah, you can't trust anybody.
What did you learn today?
Don't trust anybody.
Everyone is out to get you and make you want.
It's stupid.
That's funny, though.
I like that confession.
I like all different ones because there's a lot of poop.
In Baltimore confessions, a lot of pee, which happened to me, and now you gave us a good one.
So thank you for that.
I don't think of it.
We're going to ask you a couple rapid-fire questions before we wrap it up.
I'm ready.
Favorite place you've traveled to?
Paris.
Really?
Yeah.
Biggest silly fear.
I'm still scared of sharks.
Oh, get it.
I mean, is there anyone not scared of sharks?
I mean, you're probably to a whole other level.
I went diving with sharks with no cage.
You did?
Yeah.
Are you psychopath?
Yes.
Was it hard?
I had a full-blown panic attack in the water, had to get out, and it was awful.
But I said I could, but I can now say I did it.
Oh, nice, nice.
Favorite musician or band?
My favorite.
I'm loving Kigo right now.
Oh, yeah.
I just actually worked with him and did, yeah.
I did a poetry for his live show.
Whoa.
Oh, that's so cool.
Good for you.
Yeah, but I love his music.
That's amazing.
I'm obsessed with Dermott Kennedy.
Oh, yeah, totally.
Just bought tickets to his show in New York.
I'm very excited about it.
No way.
Yeah.
Cool.
Favorite celebrity, no, sorry, celebrity crush.
Oh, good question.
Was it?
It was, you know who it was forever?
It was Jennifer Anderson.
Yeah.
And it still kind of is because I met her.
And I thought.
Or she's just the coolest, too.
Like, is she just so chill and normal and lovely?
This is, sorry to segue, but this was, like, one of the coolest experiences in my life.
I was in Arquette, David Arquette's house.
We were talking about something.
This is random.
And then I was just like, we were all in the kitchen.
And then Courtney Cox came out.
And then Jennifer Anneson came out, and I was like, I'm in friends.
And this is, you're in life's exploding.
All of a sudden, you're like dropping, so many Ross quotes.
You're like, Unagi.
they're like oh god
yeah they're just like oh yeah anyways that was very exciting that's cool yeah oh my gosh
Jennifer ever you're listening she's gorgeous she totally listens to my podcast
Jennifer Annes until it low worked with you didn't you?
Oh no he never know he worked with her a little smart water yeah
she's an angel yeah yeah that's what I've heard that and my um the guy who does my hair does her
hair oh cool yeah we're just all so cool we are cool um favorite cocktail oh i like just like
scotch mm-hmm do you know that i do no i didn't know that oh you know one of my memories
with you is going to the keg in vancouver and taking a tequila shot and you made me eat the
whole lime like including the what is that called the rind oh gross yeah when you're like
and i still don't know if you're just trying to mess with me or i think it's probably
You were like, it totally cuts the taste.
Like, you don't, you just have to eat the whole thing.
Caitlin's been doing it since then.
Just like eating the whole lot.
You told her trying to make it old stupid and I did it.
Oh, my God.
I think I was.
I love that we're at the keg.
Yeah, the keg.
Very Canadian brand, um, brand restaurant.
Chain.
Oh.
Yeah.
Black Angus, if you will.
Yeah.
Similar.
Similar.
I think.
I don't really know.
I'm going to take you to black angus, baby girl.
I get you a steak.
What is that one?
steakhouse that everybody knows in the States.
Outback steakhouse.
It's like that.
Outback. Yeah. It's like a fancier outback.
It's like a Canadian outback.
Yeah. Dream dinner guest, dead or alive.
Oh, Hemingway, probably.
Oh.
Yeah.
Totally.
Yeah.
Okay. Favorite place to write. Paris?
Paris, yeah.
Okay. Most prized possession.
Ooh, my motorcycle.
You've a, oh, I knew that.
Yeah.
Oh.
Do people know Atticus has a motorcycle?
They do, yeah.
Oh, okay, okay.
A favorite way to spend a free afternoon?
I love sailing.
Oh, yeah, I knew that about you.
That's the best.
Okay, so I do this thing on my podcast now where I give out Instagramis to.
I love this.
Yeah, so it's like either someone that's like empowering or inspirational or does something good for others.
Like just let's give them a little Instagramie.
So I'm going to give one to you.
What?
Well, yeah.
Thank you.
I have nothing to give you but my word.
Well, and your delicious wine.
Yeah.
Here's your Instagrammy.
It's a glass of my rosé.
So everybody has to follow you on Instagram if they're not already, but most people are.
And it's at Atticus Poetry.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'm also going to give an Instagramie to at Bunny's Buddies, obviously.
I've talked about them so much, but if you're not following them on Instagram, you should be very inspiring.
She's the most passionate person I've ever seen in my life about rescuing.
dogs. Oh, cool.
And that's where I got my dog from.
Really? Yeah. And her page is just full of cute dogs, but she shows like really behind
the scenes, like stuff that you're like, oh, shit, in South Korea and China, what they
do to dogs. So it's very eye-opening.
And then, yeah, obviously Atticus poetry.
Because I remember, you did change my life a little bit with your Instagram account.
Oh, you're so sweet. Say that, but thank you.
And I just love you as a human being. And I feel like everything you've done in your life,
which we can't talk about, because then people may be able to figure it.
You've always inspired me and you've always helped me into doing things that I, like, needed to do.
Really?
Yeah.
You know that.
I didn't know that.
Yes, you did.
No, you did.
Thank you.
I was always like...
Give you an Instagram me.
Hey, if everybody's listening and they don't follow me on Instagram, that's messed up.
But, no, you just certain things like you and our little group of friends there, you guys, everybody's so motivated and, like, driven and does cool things and just, like, chases their dreams.
instead of what they should be doing.
And I feel like you guys always really encouraged me to do that.
Oh, that's great.
I appreciate you.
I love you, and you are one of my dear friends.
And I can't end your atticum.
And that's the coolest part about you.
No, I'm just kidding.
But thank you so much.
And let everybody know again, I mean, podcast, your books, your Instagram.
Is there anything else that people need to know?
You've wine.
My wine.
I actually got some for you.
Stop it.
Yeah.
Well, I have some, too, at my house that I already drank,
but I would love some more.
Did you like it?
I loved it.
Yes.
Look at us.
We both have wines.
And this, I have a sweater that says Lost Poet.
I know.
It's my favorite sweater.
I want to buy the merch.
Oh, you should buy the merch.
We'll give it some merch.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Oh my God.
Thank you for this.
I'm going to drink it tonight.
Yeah, yeah.
Might as well.
And we are just got into Whole Foods.
No, you didn't.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hi-five.
Yes.
What?
Really?
Yeah.
It's just California for now, but it's spreading out across the States.
That's amazing.
Do you do a white wine, too?
No, we just launched with this red cab.
It's like a red bland cabsav.
It's good.
It's really good.
Yeah. Perfect for fall.
Yeah.
Perfect for fall.
Swipe up.
Thank you so much for coming on the podcast.

From the Lady Gang Network and podcast one.
I dated a lot of gay men in my life.
Maybe it's, I didn't know it's gay and still you like it.
It's showmance with Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz.
How romantic.

Now back to Off the Vine with Caitlin Bristow.
Let's keep that all night because I really love that.
Okay, well, I'm so glad you love it. And that is the voice of, dude, no, it's initials, Casey.
So, okay.
But so people, do they put the emphasis on, like, how do you say your name?
Just Casey.
Oh, you do?
Just Casey.
Yeah.
So my, I'm actually named after my mom's initials, Catherine Chisholm.
Oh, I love that.
Yeah, so my mom's name, so my stage name is Casey, but my legal spelling is actually
the old-fashioned way.
Oh, I love that.
So Casey Wayland.
That's how you say.
Yep.
I never know.
We were doing a media tour with Brett Kissel, and because we were just in his music video,
and everyone kept calling him Brett Kiesel, and I was like,
it's like one of my fears to just like butcher somebody's name which I do like I you know what I
I will be honest I have the same thing where I will call someone the wrong name yeah and while I say
your name in my head Caitlin Caitlin Caitlin Caitlin Caitlin Caitlin yeah you panic when Kristen comes out one time
it's because my brain switched it yeah no I hear you on that and let's tell people why we're here
and how we know each other yes yes so this is the first time we've actually met in person yeah
we recorded two years ago with we're alive Gold Rush you are our special voice
And which I got to tell you.
So, first of all, tell us what the show's about.
Oh, sure.
So Gold Rush is a post-a-apocalyptic tale about soldiers who are out to find gold in the world that really has kind of, you know, there's no value in gold anymore.
And they go on this adventure of really finding out what the value of people is versus, you know, just stuff in this world.
It's really fun.
It's a fun adventure they're on.
It was fun.
So I got to be a voice on it, which I'm telling you, that was, it's all my bucket list to be.
Like a voice, when I came off the show, I actually, my girlfriend, Penny, would always get me little auditions for voiceovers.
And when they asked me to be it, I was like, yes, I get to be a character.
And I got to do a voiceover, and I felt so cool because so next up on my bucket list is family guy.
Really? You could do it. I really think you couldn't.
Come on.
Yeah, you have a voice for it. And you have the acting ability.
Do you think I could play myself? If they find the right scenario, why not?
Now, let's talk about the fact that I had to do this with Sean, because it was two years ago.
Yes.
when I heard that this was coming out now, I'm like, oh, this is awkward because I did the
voiceovers with Sean, and now this is coming out? What do we do about that? Did you listen to
it? Not yet. He got cut.
Oh, that was evil. Calm down, Caitlin, you was psychopath. So we cut them. Yeah. Was it too weird?
It didn't work. I don't know if you remember the day, like, we tried really hard. And you
were doing amazing. And I was like, oh, if I could be there in person, I might be able to
to like do some some techniques and stuff but remotely it's like I had to rely on you a little bit
and it was it was tough and in the end it was like this just didn't work yeah like so we ended up
just replacing that voice and no one can even tell now wow that's so funny this the great thing about
audio is you can pretty much do anything you want to do and just stack in the layers yeah just the old
switcheroo okay and you have a pretty cool story also about how you started doing this if you want to
share that sure yeah so I started actually doing it back in 09 of all days um and I
I actually came from, I was previously a soldier serving overseas.
I was in Baghdad.
Thank you.
I was in Baghdad, Iraq from 03 to 04, and I worked for AFRTS.
So I had a little bit of background for, like, the radio side of things.
Yeah.
But then I also had my writing and directing degree from Chapman University.
So I had a little bit of mix of creative and a little bit of technical
and sort of merged them together into this weird post-apocalyptic story about zombies.
As a soldier, I'm like, oh, what would be the best zombie scenario?
and came up with the idea of the apartment building
where if you secure the bottom floor as a soldier,
you just fill it up with people.
And I was like, oh, that means you could just have one point of entry
and fill it with like hundreds of people if you want to.
Wait, you actually think about this stuff?
I get so scared.
Do you think it would ever happen?
I think that we, because being in war, interestingly enough,
you see that thin veil between order and chaos
and how little people have that prevents them from being stupid.
Yeah, absolutely. And who would you bring if you were in an apocalypse?
Myself. Obviously, my family. But anybody who's really good in medical probably is like if you have a nurse doctor friends, they're going to be the most valued in the end.
Oh, that's a good point. You know how some people ask you that question of like, who would you take? And I'm always like, do I have to say my boyfriend? I feel like that's someone they're saying.
They can't run. They're very slow, you know, leave behind.
Yeah, yeah. But I'm like, no, I'm totally taking a doctor.
Oh, yeah, a doctor, anybody who really knows about you or can, even somebody who is like, somebody who works at like a nursery who knows plants, who can like, oh, I can maybe, I know the use of this plant or I can grow you something to eat because what are you going to eat?
I would be a useless piece of shit in an apocalypse.
You make good wine, so no, you trade it for something.
Okay, okay, okay, that's fair.
I mean, that's pretty much all I'd have going for me.
I am such a wimp.
I feel like I'm like, anytime.
time i'm in a scary situation i just freeze i like play a egg i'm like got in the corner can't do it
no i just freak out so so so if someone was playing a prank on you and they had someone coming out
like you know the clown videos yes you'd just freeze yes you'd be a freezer okay i totally freeze
and i'm like i hate okay this is weird i hate being scared but i love scary movies yes like but
i like um eerie stuff but like someone jumping out like a clown jumping out from behind me oh my god
Now I'm, like, scared.
I'm like, do you send this up?
No, there's no set-ups here.
I swear.
There's nothing behind the cameras.
Like, you know, Ellen, when she's like, oh, I heard you're scared of this.
And then they have this thing jump out.
All of a sudden.
I hate that feeling.
I hate being tickled and I hate being scared.
Ah, I hate it.
They both feel like torture to me.
Because it's your fight or flight response.
Yes.
You're like, am I, should I do?
What should I do here?
And it, like, it does trigger something.
And you're like, what do I do?
Yeah.
I don't run.
I don't, I don't, I did a haunted house in Nashville where it's like this whole
Halloween haunted house that they have and they have actual people in there and I
throat chopped a guy by accident because he scared the shit out of me and I was like
no and I throat chopped out there like so dramatic and he was like and I was like and then I turned
around I was like oh my god I'm so sorry I know you're not like a real like monster I'm so
sorry and he just didn't say anything and I was like oh god this is weird but I totally
throat chopped him yeah no and like you're in California around Halloween you know that we
have like the best Halloween stuff around here like there's uh there's some
Some little things, like I've done, yeah, let's refill this.
I was like, you need a little more wine, yeah, yeah.
There are, like, I did a couple of Halloween mazes where the people can touch you.
Oh.
That is weird.
Like, like, we wonder, go into a room and, like, there's a guy who's, like, has fake poop on them.
And, like, we're, like, he wiped it off and then put it on someone's face.
No.
It's fake.
It's like mud, but, like, still.
But, like, he makes it stink like it's poop.
And it's, put it on his forehead, and it was, like, so grossed out.
And, now, when, you know, it's, it's, it's like, he makes it.
Wouldn't you be scared of someone doing that that you will get throw chopped or like punched in the face?
They have rules, liabilities and waivers.
But yeah, if you do anything, they'll kick you out.
Well, because I'm like, I didn't sign anything and I was punching guys in the face.
Oh, then you got lucky.
And I had a great time doing that.
But it was, I don't know.
It's just something about something about that.
So what, okay, tell us a little bit more about the show.
Oh, yes, yes.
Just because I feel like we just kind of grazed over it and I want to know a little like, like, just tell me more about it.
Sure.
And where people can find it.
Sure. So actually, the interesting thing was, I actually want to go back to the fact that you said you wanted to be a voice actor. You are one.
Oh.
And your character is actually, I'll reveal this, living in our world.
So you're actually, your character that you played, Violet, is a full-blown character and we're alive.
And actually has a history now of where that character goes in the world.
Nuh. Get it, Violet.
So you have, I will say, and I don't know when this will air, but you have one more appearance.
in the series that comes up special
that no one will probably expect.
Really?
Mm-hmm.
Like, I will say you are a heavy plot device.
Oh, I like that.
That's amazing.
Is it just one full episode or is it over a certain...
It's 10.
Okay, amazing.
So you're in...
So your character comes in episode two.
If anybody's looking around, like,
hey, I want to listen just to that episode.
Episode two is the one where you come in with Hugh
is your partner in the show.
And you are survivors from another thing
that happened outside in the world.
And the interesting thing is your character actually does something to our main character.
So you are actually like kind of one of those really important details of the world.
God, I can't wait to listen to this.
And where do people find it?
So they can go to Podcast One, the Podcast One Network.
Or if they go to Apple Podcasts, they can search for We're Alive and see our show that's been there since 2009.
So are you going to keep doing different things?
Yeah.
Okay, awesome.
No, we got a lot.
So the way that we work is we do work a hell of a lot in advance.
Like with Gold Rush, I mean, we recorded two years ago, and we're just now releasing it.
Yeah.
It takes time.
But the next one we're working on actually takes place in Catalina.
Okay.
We went on the island, and what it happens there is it takes place at a Boy Scout camp.
Yeah.
And then the outbreak happens, and these group of kids have to find a way off the island by themselves.
It's like Lord of the Flies makes the zombie apocalypse.
And they have to basically, if you've ever been to Catalina, it's a huge island.
Yeah.
And they're on one end, and Avalon's on the other.
And they have to, like, learn how to group together and grow up in this crazy world to survive.
And how do you find people to do these voices?
I write the stories and just start looking around and see who might be a good match for what characters.
And do people audition?
Yes.
Yeah.
So your character was interesting because I was able to hear your voice ahead of time and be like, okay, who is this going to be?
Ah, there we go, and made it fast.
Really?
So that was a great thing because I always like to, like, make sure that someone's voice matches the character.
and really it has to have some sort of connection with it.
So I tried to find a way to even write the character around you a little bit.
Because we don't know what she looks like, right?
No, no idea.
So people can just picture me as this little violet character.
I do.
A badass who just, you know, takes over the world.
Well, I could write that in, but.
You're like, no, Caitlin, get over yourself.
As long as you keep on filling up this glass, the story could change.
See what happens.
That's what I do to people on my podcast, by the way.
Why do you think I bring wine every time?
because I convince them to do stupid things that benefit me.
It must work.
And you know what?
You must put something in the wine because it's, you know, it works.
It does work.
It's so funny.
I had someone on the podcast yesterday.
They had one glass.
They're like, why am I buzzed off your wine off one glass?
I'm like, I don't know.
This wine is so good and it's so strong at the same time.
And I don't know how I did it, but I did it.
It's not like I was out there stomping the grapes or anything, like I'm actually physically
making myself, yeah, the falling out of that YouTube video.
I'm just smack in your face on the ground.
No, but I'm like, I have.
I did test a lot of wines.
Oh, good.
That was my favorite part of the job,
which actually got really gross at one point
because you're just like,
your mouth is raw.
Yeah.
I'm not enjoying this anymore.
How do you clean the palate and like, oh.
There's a lot of coffee beans.
Oh, the distilled.
Crackers.
What was the other one?
Crackers, coffee beans, and there's one other thing, but I can.
Oh, no, that was sushi event.
I'm like, and ginger.
Nope, that's sushi, Kailen.
Thank you so much for.
coming on and talking about it.
Honestly, thank you for lending me your voice because it was so much fun.
And I, can I give you some gifts now?
Yes, please.
Oh, my gosh, I love gifts.
So I gave, so here's a nice little small shirt for you.
Oh, cute.
Yeah.
I love a good tea.
It stretches and it's actually kind of nice.
Love it.
Here's a nice little pin for you.
Cute.
It's actually individually numbered, so it's one of a kind.
Uh-uh.
Yeah, look on the back.
You have number 93, and that's the only one in existence.
Oh, that's cool.
And then you get a copy of my book.
Oh, that's amazing.
So I, like, more and more as I do...
Wait, tell me about your book.
Yeah, so as I do more and more of these audio dramas,
I'm sort of relying on this as sort of being a production manual.
Yeah.
And how do I communicate with somebody?
Because with audio storytelling, it's all about, like,
how can I tell you the story in some way more than just, you know, dialogue.
Yeah.
With We're alive, we do sound effects, music,
and there's a whole accompaniment of custom score to accent everything.
And how you relate sound effects with people and all that has a lot to do with,
production. And so this book kind of lines up how you do that, how you communicate something with audio
without any visuals. And that's kind of a hard thing to do. Yeah, that's really cool, though. I loved
being a part of it. I really did love doing voiceovers for it. I was just like... You can come back.
Okay. Yeah, you're still in the world. And if you're up for it, I got plans.
Okay. I do. I want you. I can just keep adding it to my resume and I'll be like, Seth, put me on
family guy. Yeah. No. Seriously. And I will say this much, the world of we're alive continues even after
scouts on or we're working on our next big series the big series and the big series you could
probably be in and you know what it's a big thing right now to listen to stories um i actually do it
just for meditating purposes or to fall asleep because my meditation app has story time like
options yeah tough word kately what is that tough word options uh but it gives you sleep stories
and i find it so relaxing to just listen to a story because it really does get you in the moment
Like, I feel like you're in the moment.
You're not thinking about other stresses.
You're listening to a story.
You pay attention.
It helps you relax.
And you don't have to focus on a screen.
Exactly.
You're focusing on your phone, even a book.
It's all eye strain.
This.
You just close your eyes and you're inside the world.
Exactly.
Oh, I love that.
Well, thank you so much.
I hope everybody goes and listens.
I can't wait to go listen, too, because I'm like a narcissist.
And I will say, okay.
So if anybody's looking for Caitlin, go to episode two and 10.
Oh.
I see what you did.
did there. You know, you leave them hanging
and be like, well, I have to have to hang in there
for episode 10. You've got to listen all
the way past the credits. I'll just say that much.
Yes. You're
in that like Marvel scene.
Oh, violet. Yes, honey.
Awesome. Well, thank you so much. And then
look forward to working with you in the future.
All righty. Let's strike some more gold.
