Starting point is 00:00:57 Get ready to shake things up. Here's Caitlin. Welcome to Off the Vine. I'm your host, Caitlin Bristow. Joining me in the studio today is a winner of the voice, Grammy nominated. No big deal. Singer-songwriter, Cassidy Pope. Thank you so much for being here.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Thank you. Thanks for having me. I mean, thanks for the wine. Oh, yeah, you're so always. Always. You're just crushing life right now. Oh, my gosh. Thanks.
Starting point is 00:01:20 I have been for a while, but not really. I've had a few weird seasons in my life. Well, we all have. It would be weird if you didn't have a few weird seasons in your life. Yeah, if it kind of feels like a comeback in a weird way, even though I didn't really go away that much, it was just kind of like, okay. Like an inner comeback. Yeah, I feel really good. Okay, I love that.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Well, we're going to dive into that in a bit. I apologize to you when I walked in here because I hugged you and then told you I blow-dried my sweaty hair. It's fine. You smell really good. So if you were smelled like, you know, B.O. I'd be like, girl. Oh, yeah. I did like the, like I used my Neutrigina wipes.
Starting point is 00:01:59 There you go. Yeah. And then I blowdried my hair and threw on some perfume. So I masked the smell. That isn't even my confession. That's just me being honest. That's just you being honest. It's a podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:09 That's the beauty of it. You know what? You're right. And I'm just, I'm just gross. No, you're not. Well, you're a lovely woman. Agree to disagree. I saw like a month ago you did a workout, I think, with Barry's boot camp for a good cause.
Starting point is 00:02:22 What was that for? It was for unlikely heroes. It's a cause. that I've supported for a while now, probably like two years. And it's a program where they rescue and rehabilitate sex slave victims. Oh, wow. And it's amazing. They have a bunch of houses all over the country, and they go all over the world to rescue these girls and give them new lives.
Starting point is 00:02:43 So, yeah, anybody that took the class that day was the proceeds went to unlikely heroes. Oh, I really love that. Oh, that's cool. It was really hard, though. Well, yeah, but how did you look so good doing it? Like, I would, after my boxing class today, I was like, I get furnace face. Like, my face just, like, heats up and goes bright red. And my hair, the only place I sweat is my head.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Yeah. And so I look like I just got out of a shower, but really it's sweat. And I just look like, like, a drowned rat when I come out of a gym. You were, like, glowing. Your hair was perfect. Oh. Drinking your water, flexing your muscles and, like, this cute little outfit. I was like, oh, I mean, there was a camera in my face.
Starting point is 00:03:21 So I was like, I put on a little extra makeup that day. I knew I would be sweating my ass off and, you know, threw my hair back and a lot of hairspray. Yeah. Well, you looked great. I prepared. Thanks, girl. You looked great. And I interviewed you. I'm going to give you a chance to redeem yourself.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Do you remember when I interviewed you on the red carpet at the CMAs? It was like two seconds. This year? No, it was the 50th anniversary. Oh, my God. And I made you do the five second rule. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Oh, my God. I remember that. Yeah. Wow. Look at you now. From the red carpet to this little intimate studio. Your own dang podcast. I know.
Starting point is 00:03:58 I know. I love doing stuff like that. I love hosting. I mean, even if it's at my house and just having people over, I just love hosting. I feel like it's just in my soul. I love it. But I asked you. Actually, you know what?
Starting point is 00:04:09 I should pull up the clip. Because I asked you, what was it? Oh, it was the five second rule. And you had to name three animals that lay. eggs in five seconds. God. Do you remember this? Um, yes, and I don't, I, I feel like I did a good job. Uh, no. I didn't. I mean, let's roll the clip.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Oh, my God. How did I not know three animals? I've been on a jumbotron three times in my whole life, and that's one. Here you are. Name three egg laying animals. What? Oh, chicken. Uh, I'm too nervous. No, I'm actually lost, too. Name. Oh, my God. Chicken? But really. Okay, wait, let me get out of that. But really, I'm still thinking.
Starting point is 00:04:57 I'm like, hey, wait, chicken. Ostriches. Ostriches, lay eggs. And, uh, birds. Whales are chickens. Quails are birds, right? Yeah. Yeah, they lay eggs.
Starting point is 00:05:10 I feel like, I mean, that was a tough one. That was hard. I will give you that, but that's why I have this timer that we laughed at the sound. Oh, yeah. That's a great timer. See, it's. If you had that on the red carpet, it would have been even worse. I would have been like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:25 Yeah, well, now you're going to feel the pressure because I'm going to ask you a few. We're going to try and have you redeem yourself. Okay. Can't make any guarantees that I will. It's okay because you know what? I'm terrible at this game. I always make people play it and then I'm actually really bad at it. That's okay.
Starting point is 00:05:41 It's hard. It's the pressure I think that gets people. It's the pressure that always gets me for sure. Okay. Are you ready? Yes. Okay. Three egg lane.
Starting point is 00:05:50 I don't know, just kidding. I forgot. Okay, name three internet websites. Twitter.com, Instagram.com, Facebook.com. Amazing. See, that you already redeemed yourself. That was actually really good. Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:06 Three people that you wouldn't want to make out with. Donald Trump. That counts for three. Good enough. I'm going to give you the point. on that one. Okay, last one, ready? Oh, God, I just got myself into some trouble.
Starting point is 00:06:25 No, hey, we could always edit. I'm just being honest. Yeah, who would want, no matter what your political beliefs are, who would want to make out with Donald's up. Not my type, not my type, either. Just not my type. Okay, ready, three Disney movies. Aladdin, Lion King, and Frozen.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Wow, that, you even, like, thought and took your time and you still did it. Yeah, I was trying to think of more current one, so Frozen just popped into my head. No, that was really good. Okay, last one, ready? Yeah. Three things you find in your nightstand. I think it's just bathing suits. Bathing suits in your nightstand?
Starting point is 00:06:58 Yeah, so I have. I was thinking like, I don't know, like a retainer. A Bible. A Bible retainer. Retainer. Yeah, I use my, I use, I have two nightstands on, like one on each side of my bed, and they're basically like nightstand dressers, and I just have like, my, I think on my side. You just got an abundance of bathing suits.
Starting point is 00:07:17 You got to stuff them in your nightstand. Yeah. Yeah. I just. I have, like, ten bathing suits I have them there. Gotcha. And I think the bottom two drawers are pajamas. Oh, so that's technically.
Starting point is 00:07:27 Yeah, I see, again, I always try and, like, chirp people, but at the same time, I'm like, you should see what's in my nightstand. It's a joke. Oh, okay. Yeah. I thought you were going to go a different direction. You should say what's on my nightstand. Yeah. That's the direction I am going.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Great. I'm a single lady. Just kidding. So tell me a little bit about your music career because, okay, everybody who talks about your band, Hey Monday.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Yeah, that was before the voice, right? Yes. Okay, so you already had like a fan base before going on. Yeah. And then you won the voice. And then that's obviously led you on the path that you're on now. But tell me, like, about your band and going on to the voice. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:09:38 It was so weird because I was in this band for like, four years it wasn't even that long but we had this crazy trajectory of being on tour with fallout boy and and we just went on a bunch yeah like a world tour and and that was when they were you know they're doing actually still the same but um they were doing arenas and stuff so i'm like this kid that's never been on tour playing arenas so and then our fan base just grew and grew really fast but it was almost too fast because i felt like a lot of the fans didn't really like grow with us we You were just, it was very quick. So when I sort of wanted to change directions with music and, hey, Monday, the fans kind of lost interest and the label at the time lost interest.
Starting point is 00:10:24 And I was like, you know what, I'm going to leave the band and pursue a solo career and see what happens. So that's when I moved to L.A. I was, I'm from West Palm Beach, Florida. So I, like, drove to L.A. with my mom and my little Nissan Versa. It was like we got there and felt like we had been hit by a truck because we didn't stop. Yeah. Yeah, you just went. Yeah, like 36 hours, just straight driving.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Wow. Florida, L.A., yeah, it was awful. And then, and then. It's quite the trek. Yeah, it was. And I remember, you know, just getting there and thinking it was going to be one thing and it was completely different. Like, nobody gave a shit. Yeah, of course.
Starting point is 00:10:59 I didn't really have anybody's attention. So I was making a little EP that I just, like, threw together with some friends. And I got an offer to go audition for the voice. And I was like, I, it was. It was really serendipitous, but I got offered to come and audition the season before, and I didn't do it because I was like, I don't want to, you know, take that route. I don't want to be on a singing competition show and then thought it was taking the easy way for some reason. And then I did it.
Starting point is 00:11:27 I went and did it. And it was like the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. Really? Yeah. How come? It's just. Like the pressure of TV? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Yeah. I mean, with Hey Monday, we performed on like two late night shows that were last. And that was really nerve-wracking. But this is like, I mean, I uprooted, you know, my whole life basically and lived in a hotel and didn't know anybody. And I'm singing on live television and competing, which was weird for me. I'm not a competitive person, really. And so it was, I was, like, breaking out all the time. I was, like, getting sick every morning because I was just nervous.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Nerves and stressed as weird things to the body. It does. Yeah. I, like, I was really thin. And I look back and I'm like, whoa, that's too skinny. Yeah, yeah. And it just, it was like really, it really messed with me, but, you know, I wouldn't change it for the world. Right.
Starting point is 00:12:18 It probably shaped, well, it did shape you into who you are and probably gave you a little more confidence in the world that you're in now. Oh, my God. Yeah. I definitely, I was like, oh, I think that they like me. Yeah. They sure did. And now the world does. I think it does.
Starting point is 00:12:34 I think it probably gives you the confidence. And I think that kind of transitions into, like, aren't you going on a tour? the CMT next women of country tour. Yes. Which is so powerful. Yeah, that'll be amazing. That sounds so badass. Who else is joining you?
Starting point is 00:12:48 It's going to be me, Claire Dunn, and Hannah Ellis. And Hannah Ellis actually co-wrote my current single, if my heart had a heart. Oh, my gosh. So I'm really excited for her to get some more recognition as an artist. And Claire Dunn is incredible and has a great fan base. Yeah, so it'll be girl power. It'll be fun. I love that.
Starting point is 00:13:06 And is it going to be on CMT? Like, can people watch it or is it just a tour? It's a tour. I think CMT are doing a few specials on Hot 20 Countdown just to like come along the road and like record some of it. But yeah, it'll just be on the road. I just love the idea of a female tour like women coming together. And country music seems to be a pretty male dominated world, obviously. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:28 Do you see a shift in that? Like have you seen a change in that or do you still think it is? I think there's a change in how loud the conversation is. I don't really see change like an actual physical change in, you know, radio play or whatever like touring even like we make it happen because we just put tours together where we're all touring together but when it comes to actual tours a lot of people don't bring out girls for some reason so it's it's hard we're trying we're doing it whatever we can but it's you know what do you think that is I think for a long time it just kind of it was talked about like
Starting point is 00:14:03 there's a problem there's a problem and now it's just become like an actual problem and there's a stigma. But I do think that there's a lot of inequality just in general in the music industry with women. You know, it's not just country. I think it's really bad in country music, but I think it's bad everywhere. It's just, you know, it's just a little bit more prevalent. That's true. Like there's more of a platform for people to speak on with, with when you're a rising star. Yeah. And when you are a star, when you have the, you know, the voice to say something. Yeah. Yeah. It's interesting. But I have faith that it's going to change. It's just like, like not, you know, it's not going to be overnight.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Yeah, I agree. I agree. But that's true. The conversation just is louder now. Yeah, I love that. Which is great. Yeah. I agree. And, uh, my confession should be how gross I am right now, but stop it. Well, you look adorable. Thank you. I work well with what I've got, is what I always say. You sound like you're like quasi-modo over there, but you're like a super model. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's true. I should give myself more credit for what I've done this morning.
Starting point is 00:15:16 But this is, I went boxing, like I said. I was like, got home. I had 25 minutes. And I was like, okay, I'm going to like scramble some eggs and make toast and like do something healthy. You can slice up some avocado. I got home and I see this package on my front step, which I'm surprised didn't get stolen because somebody broke in my car and stole my mail. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:15:38 I know. Did they steal the mail in your car or these two separate occasions? Two separate occasions in the last like three nights. Oh, my God. Yeah. I got to call the cops. Well, it's the whole neighborhood. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:15:49 But then somebody bought me cupcakes, so kind of made up for it. I wonder if it's the person who's been stealing your shit. They just feel guilty. They're just like, let's leave her some cupcakes. It's like a sour patch kit. But here's some cupcakes. At least you'll be well fed. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:16:05 So I'm like, oh, no, I can't resist a cupcake. I can't. If it's in front of me. Girl, but you don't know what they made it with, like, their blood. Oh. Well, shit. I didn't think about that. How do you feel right now?
Starting point is 00:16:18 Are you okay? I'm a little dizzy. Wait, suddenly I'm seeing two of you. Yeah. Just start, like, foaming at the mouth. Wait, now I'm scared. But you're fine. So it was like mini cupcakes.
Starting point is 00:16:32 They weren't that many, but they're smaller. So I'm like, well, I guess I can eat a few mini ones that would, like, you know, equal one. No. Do you want to know how many mini cupcakes I ate after boxing? Yeah. Twelve. Yes. Twelve mini cupcakes.
Starting point is 00:16:49 My girl. And they were like topped with a lot of icing and a treat on top. Oh. What kind of trade are we talking? Like a candy. Oh. I don't know. Where did these come from?
Starting point is 00:16:59 I think it said like Melissa's bakery, baked by Melissa. Hey, Melissa. I hope it's Melissa. Come on, Melissa. I'm Googling this real quickly. Just because I'm like, I do want to give her a shout out because they were phenomenal. But then I'm like, how did Melissa get my email? It's true.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Oh, my computer's frozen, which does not go well for this podcast. What's happening? What is happening? I don't judge you for eating 12 cupcakes. I really don't because I went over to England where my boyfriend's from. Yeah. I had, have you ever heard of a pasty? a pasty yeah it's like it's like a almost like a hot pocket but it's very thick and there's it's almost like a pot pie inside of it and flaky and just did this fried dough sort of thing and I have that almost every day really really weeks oh okay so well yeah I get you know what yolo as the children's thing just said like two weeks ago I was going to bring back yolo I was like I got to start saying yolo again it's so funny it is funny it is funny it's so
Starting point is 00:18:04 dumb it's so dumb but it's like it makes so much sense and it's like like when you use it in the right context like this moment yeah it's like yeah that landed with me yolo good yeah I'm glad you yolode anyways don't feel bad about yourself I actually don't feel too bad it's just kind of like my funny confession yeah like at the end of the day I'm more proud than I am embarrassed but I have to like seem ashamed of it because it's my confession yes you know and then I have to be like girl it's okay totally and then I have to be like I know yeah but you Usually my confessions are way juicier than that. Oh.
Starting point is 00:18:37 So give me something good here. Make up for my cupcakes. I confess that my confession is not amazing, but I really racked my brain. I really did. So when I was going through my big breakup in 2017, I knew that I wanted to be single for a while. I didn't really have any plans of dating anyone or anything like that. So I did a little, like, experiment with myself and grew my leg hair out for, like, two months. Get it.
Starting point is 00:19:11 And it. Was it liberating? It was. It was really great. And it wasn't, like, that long. I was kind of like, oh. Oh, okay. Disappointed.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Yeah. You were like, oh, I worked really hard for that. Nothing to show for it. Like, I'm not a super hairy person. I am. Oh, I wouldn't think that. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:28 I've got, like, I think I've got, like, a little Native American in my blood. and I think that's where that comes from. Not on my head. Nope. Let's give her the thinnest hair up there. Let's disperse it everywhere else. Everywhere else. Yeah, I don't know what it is.
Starting point is 00:19:42 Oh, that's very lucky for you. Yeah, yeah. It was like fine hair. So it wasn't, it was kind of, it was gross. Like to the day two months? Yeah, pretty much. I mean, I kind of like forgot about it. And then I was like, oh, I got to wear a skirt.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Wait, now this is really interesting. Like, that's where your mind went of what to do after a breakup. Yeah. Oh, I did a lot of other things. Oh, okay. But I'm like, that's your most embarrassing one out of all of the things. Yeah. Like, there was probably more, probably some self-medication for a little while.
Starting point is 00:20:14 But I think that's like the one that I'm a little bit like, ooh, that's not the best look. See, now I'm like trying to think of I clearly went through a public breakup too. And I'm like, what was my low point? What did I do? I slept on my dog's bed a few nights. Because I missed him so much Oh, oh God He took the dog
Starting point is 00:20:36 Yeah I mean at the I will give him this okay It was You know what I'm going to join you on that I will say it was his dog to start with Okay So there's that
Starting point is 00:20:47 That's awful though I can't get over it But again I can't blame them Because I you know it's too hard to see each other And do the like course You know and it was his dog So I understand Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:01 But I, and I don't clean up the dog hair in my house. I can't, yeah. Is it? That's okay. Don't clean it up. Just, you know, roll around in it. Can I save it? Is that weird?
Starting point is 00:21:13 Make a doll. I make a new dog out of the dog. What sad is I thought about it? You've been saving it. You've been sweeping it into your little dust pan. Yeah, I precious. I really do. Like, sometimes I even want to smell it because it smells like him.
Starting point is 00:21:30 Don't sniff too hard because you're going to get all that hair up in your brain. Well, yeah. I wouldn't be mad, though. It's already up there figuratively. I got like a little stuffed animal dog and I was like, should I like glue his hair onto it? See, now this is a confession. This is the confession. Where has this been?
Starting point is 00:21:50 I don't know. It's just like all's coming out now. But yeah, it's just, it kills me. So that's like something embarrassing, I think I did. That, yeah, that's, I understand. But that's also very. relatable and understandable. Is what?
Starting point is 00:22:02 Oh, yeah. Gluing your dogs shedding old hair to a new stuff animal? But you didn't actually do it, did you? No. Okay. If you did it, then, okay. The fact that I thought about it, I think, is bad enough. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:15 We all go into a dark place. Yeah, like, is that, that's probably inspired your upcoming album stages. Yes. I'm sure as a public breakup. How, because what was it, seven years you guys were together? Yeah. Yeah. And engaged.
Starting point is 00:22:30 relatable for me and I mean not the seven years part but engaged and I saw that you said it reflects a timeline of emotion for you yeah um you went through it was it was pretty public like obviously people was he part what who was he part of a your band okay he's oh not not my band he's in a band called all time low they're great okay okay and I just feel like that's a great way to kind of unravel your feelings and process them as to write music that's probably very therapeutic for you and how you come up with some of your best stuff. Oh, yeah. I mean, it was like, I mean, if I didn't have that outlet, it would have been a lot trickier
Starting point is 00:23:08 of a time because I had my producer, Corey, who was like, I think we should just make music during this time because we might actually come up with some really amazing stuff. And we did. And it was only supposed to be a few songs to maybe shop to some labels, see what they think. And then it just escalated and snowballed. And then, like, life was happening as I was. writing and got into a newer relationship and then all these other things were happening. So just the album is like such a story.
Starting point is 00:23:37 Yeah. So I just so great because how many people can relate to heartbreak? Oh my gosh. Yeah. I mean, it's it was one of those times in my life where I was like, this is awful, but I don't, I still for some reason, feel really excited for my future. This is like this sucks right now. But I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:55 I think that's, I think when you know you made the right decision, you can sit in muck and be like, oh, I'm really sad, but you can still sort of see a little, like, light. I love that. Because I had written down, like, don't you feel that when you're raw, true authentic self and you kind of sit and being uncomfortable and channel it into something that it becomes something beautiful, like, it's, it's okay to hurt and it's okay. If you just have a little glimpse of hope and know that it's for the best, that's, like, it's empowering.
Starting point is 00:24:24 It's really empowering. Yeah, it is. And I, I mean, there were a lot of times where I felt like I needed to save face or I needed to go do stuff and um i took like a tiny little break from social media when it was all going down because like i didn't want to have to be fake and be like i'm fine and this is what i'm doing because it's such a highlight reel on on see i went the other way i was like i'm not okay i was like crying on my instagram stories i was posting pictures of the dog and people were kind of like we don't really want to see that oh like are you okay we're going to call someone i was like i don't
Starting point is 00:24:54 want to be fake so i'm going to be really real good i mean yeah like here's a thing thing i mean i've i've been pretty open with my personal life to a certain extent like it's definitely best for you yeah yeah like if i if i was like an open book and and all the time like letting people in on what's going on then it would it would almost be like well why you know why are you choosing now to like not let us in right um so it so it totally makes sense why you would take that approach and is probably therapeutic for you yeah it is that that's you know something that you creatively like and it's an outlet for you but yeah for me it was like writing and sort of taking a step away i mean that's a lot that's a much better idea to write beautiful music
Starting point is 00:25:39 no because you know like i channel it into music i'm like i channel it into a good instagram story no no no no no because you have fans that like look up to you and and are either going through it right now or have have been through it so like yeah i mean if i mean honestly i think it was just also just I didn't want to deal with like people that are sort of friends like acquaintances getting on my back about things and I was just like I'd kind of just want to be by myself for a minute I totally get that and I ended up doing the same thing because of that reason like all of a sudden people who I haven't talked to and like they're coming out of the woodwork like what happened I'm like oh do you want me to just explain to you yeah exactly what happened when we haven't
Starting point is 00:26:20 talked in years or like when we're like not really great friends like I don't want to talk about what happened yeah exactly and it's really it's really it's really it's It's too much to be explaining what's going on over and over every single day to, like, constantly to people. And it's too much. Yeah, it's constantly reminding yourself of what's going on instead of moving forward. You're kind of like just reliving everything and every detail, telling people that it don't matter. Yeah, it's definitely, like, it's nobody's, you can choose who knows what. Right.
Starting point is 00:26:49 You have the power there. So true. I always think of Carly Pierce winning that award, too, when she's like, like, thanks. for the every little, every little thing. Yeah. And she, like, so she's like, thanks to what I don't remember. She's like, to the guy who broke my heart. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Oh, I just like started crying when I saw that. I was like, get it, girl. I know. She was, oh my God, it was so awesome. She actually referenced me in an interview she did where she was talking about how she met Michael Ray. Oh, yeah. Or how things sort of like took a turn for more of like a romantic thing.
Starting point is 00:27:23 And she actually gave me credit for being like, hey, Yeah, Cassidy reached out to Sam on Instagram, and now they're dating, and that kind of gave me the inspiration. Really? All right, girl. Yeah. Wait, that's so cool. Yeah, it's like, I felt pretty, I was like, oh, thanks. I didn't even realize that I inspired her to do that at all.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Do you realize how many women you inspire in a lot of things? No. You don't? I mean, sometimes. I'm just, it's weird to inspire people when you're doing what you love and you're just doing what makes you happy. Right. It just comes naturally to you, and it makes you happy. It's your passion.
Starting point is 00:27:57 Yeah, but that's like, that's when you know you're doing the right thing is when you're happy and it's your passion and you're changing lives along the way. It is craziness. All right. Listen up. I have an exciting new sponsor that's doing something totally revolutionary with birth control access in the U.S. And while it's about damn time someone did, they're called Simple Health and they're here to make your health care, you guessed it, simple. They're starting out by simplifying birth control access with online prescriptions and home delivery. Did you know over 20 million women in America lack reasonable access to something as basic and fundamental as contraception? It's safe to say that the existing health care system in America can prevent women from getting what they really need, whether it's insurance barriers, income, or physical location. So simple health thought of a better way.
Starting point is 00:28:44 With simple health, you can get your birth control prescribed online and delivered to your door for free. It's affordable, convenient, and safe. whether you're already on birth control looking to get back on or want to try it for the first time, simple health will take care of you. So here's how it works. You fill out a comprehensive online health profile and answer some questions formulated to get the best birth control for you, your body, your preferences, your insurance situation. They take all of it into account. A medical doctor will review your profile, figure out if you're a good candidate for birth control, recommend a product and write a prescription. Then your birth control ships to your door on a
Starting point is 00:29:22 a reoccurring schedule so no interruptions and just to be clear simple health isn't making their own birth control or anything like that they only prescribe trusted and vetted brands of birth control including pills as well as the patch and ring if you're already on birth control and simply tired of dealing with the pharmacy it's even easier just fill in your pharmacy and insurance information and they'll start shipping your birth control to you for free the prescription is usually $20 but my listeners get to try it for free just go to simplehealth.com slash vine or enter code Vine at checkout. Again, don't miss your chance to try this awesome service for free. Go to Simplehealth.com slash Vine or just enter Code Vine at checkout. If you're a lady,

Starting point is 00:30:44 Now back to Off the Vine with Caitlin Bristow. So you slid into DMs? Is that what happened? I slid into the DMs. Get it. Yeah, I was like, hey, I got to the point where I had gone on a bunch of dates that really were just for the mere, I just wanted to feel desired again. Like, I needed to get back out there. I was like, I don't even know if I still got it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Well, you do. And so once I got really confident and good and a good place, I was like, actually I think I'm ready to like maybe start talking to somebody that I'm actually into. Yeah. And so I met him one time six years ago or something. No way. Yeah. And we never ran into each other ever again. It was the weirdest thing.
Starting point is 00:31:27 And he's in Nashville. And he's in Nashville. And now, and after about six or seven months, I had been in East Nashville. And he's in East Nashville. And so we, I just, yeah, DMed him and was like, hey, do you want to hang out? And then it was over like a two-month period where we didn't hang out. But we were like every once in a while, like, how's it going? And then eventually we met up at the dog park with our dogs.
Starting point is 00:31:50 Oh, I love it. Yeah. Oh, there's nothing better than bonding over dogs. Yeah. Yeah, it was like. And yeah, because it would have been a deal breaker if he didn't like my dog. Yeah. Oh, of course.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Our dogs didn't like each other. Of course. So that was a good like, oh. That is a non-negotiable. Yep. Sorry. Absolutely. That's so cute.
Starting point is 00:32:10 You were both. See, this is where I think about the universe and timing because I'm like, you didn't run into each other that whole time. Yeah, because you probably would have, you know, it would have messed something up along the way. You were supposed to meet back at the time you did. Yeah, I mean, we were both in relationships and didn't think twice about each other. And so, yeah, it's really weird. Like, we met at a very interesting time. He had just gotten out of a long-term relationship.
Starting point is 00:32:37 I was ready to start dating again. And so I kind of friend zoned him and I was like, oh, you've got a lot to go through still. Like, I've been through this process. but I'll be here for you and then eventually realize that like we were very compatible and it was going really well. Yeah. I was like, okay, I'm just going to let this happen. Yeah, and that's all you can do is you have to just surrender to certain feelings sometimes. You can't fight it when it's a good thing.
Starting point is 00:33:04 Yeah, exactly. And it's been awesome. And it's been very, you know, it's like being this current me and the most like the best version of myself in a relationship, I'm just a constant. surprisingly surprising myself with how I handle things and how I, you know, if there's a, if there's a discussion had, how like adult that I am. And just like, oh, this is what's been missing. Like, I've needed to grow and I've needed to really like start loving myself. That's the biggest thing. Until you're removed from a situation, you don't really have clarity on it and of why you were a certain way. And then once you can be removed and once you can grow from from the pain and everything and look back on it and see. why the next time is going to be so different. Yeah. Oh, totally. And I always turn to myself. Like, I'm always like, okay, that's why
Starting point is 00:33:54 I, you know, I was unhappy. It was because I was just unhappy with myself. And I could not work on myself with anybody there. Like, I kind of just needed to be on my own and identify my own identity because I identified as somebody else's person for so long. I've been there. I did that with an ex who played hockey. Oh, yeah. I just felt like I completely lost myself to his life. and I didn't know who I was anymore
Starting point is 00:34:17 and I didn't feel purpose and you got to get that confidence back because I mean it all starts I say this basically every podcast with self-love like it really does Oh yeah I read that book You Are a Badass and it changed my life
Starting point is 00:34:32 Really? So good. Oh my God you have to read it It's like I'm writing this down It's a big like yellow You are a badass And it's all about self-love But it says it in such a relatable way
Starting point is 00:34:43 Where you're just like Oh it's like kind of simple right it's just to be able to look at yourself and and um know your worth is it's amazing so when bad things happen to you it's not like what's wrong with me how could i have you know done anything better it's like okay clearly there's something wrong with that person yeah there's a disconnect it's not me yeah so it's and that that's really empowering yeah i i mean preach everything you're saying i'm like yes yes i can't like to read this book because i'm like that sounds right up my alley.
Starting point is 00:35:16 I love it. But it's just so true. Like it's sometimes you take on other people's demons too and all of a sudden your insecurities or their insecurities when they weren't yours before. And you just losing yourself is probably the worst feeling. Yeah. And you and it's very hard like it's hard to get back to that because, you know, for me I, I, like, identify as a musician.
Starting point is 00:35:40 Like I feel like that's who I am. But it's not. And it can't be because. God forbid something happens where that's taken from me. Yeah. Then what? Then I have to, it's constantly like trying to lean on things that are not, you know, going to always be there.
Starting point is 00:35:54 And if they're taken from you, then you're just going to fall. Yeah. So it's just like you need to lean on yourself. And I mean, I, my songwriting changed since I felt that. You must see like such a maturity in your songwriting, like compared to looking back now. Like, but that's such a cool thing too, you know? Yeah. You can see your own personal growth through your music.
Starting point is 00:36:15 music and you'll always have that. Yeah, it's really cool. I mean, I feel like this record, too, is just like me not really having any boundaries. And that's because I don't. That's going to make some good music. Yeah. And I don't have boundaries anymore as far as, like, what I can achieve and what I feel like I'm worthy of. So I just came out through the album.
Starting point is 00:36:34 Oh, wow. That's a beautiful thing. Yeah. I'm so excited to hear it. What's your favorite song on the album? Do you have one or do you have like eight? I have so many. And it changes every day.
Starting point is 00:36:43 Yeah, yeah. So that's hard. Like, I think I always go back to how I feel right now, which is, that's the song title. And I went into the session right at the beginning of my new relationship at the time. And I was like, I don't even know what I want to write about. All I know is I'm falling in love. I'm really happy. I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:37:03 I'm not thinking about next year. I just, that's just how I feel right now. And that was such an easy emotion to write about because we get so caught up and like, is this the best timing? is, you know, his career might be a problem down the line, and maybe we won't always, like, you know, be able to spend time together and he's from England, he's going to move back there someday, instead of just like. Being in the moment. Yeah. And, you know, look at us now. We're still, like, awesome. So I listen back to that song and I'm like, oh, yay. I like. It was such a fun, like, moment in time that I'm so glad I captured. Yeah. And it's probably like a big part, like being present and in the moment probably helped you do, like writing probably helped you. Like, writing probably helped you. you stay in that moment and think about that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:47 It's kind of like flying off the rails, but in a really good way. In the best way possible. Best way. Oh, I love that. It was so funny because I was like, I don't know how much time we're going to get or have, but I had. Oh, it's gone now because I had to restart my computer because it froze. I need to get a new computer. Like, what am I doing?
Starting point is 00:38:03 But I did a segment on my podcast sometimes called Can You Not? Can you not? Oh, I love it. And it's like, can you not? and you like come up with like all these things that bug you and you're like can you not and I'll try and come up with different categories all the time and so I did a I did a relationship can you not like I was like okay oh no sorry not relationship breakup can you not and it was so funny my biggest can you not for a relationship breakup for a relationship is can you not show up on my popular page on the search page on Instagram like can you not keep showing up on there with with, like, the dog and everything that you're doing. Oh, God, that's amazing. Oh, I love that.
Starting point is 00:38:51 That's such a good idea. I know. So I'm trying to think of what I could say without getting in trouble. Wait, I'm dying. I just pulled up Facebook to see. And it's Kendra Wilkinson, the Playboy. Yes, yes. Is dating Chad Johnson from the Bachelor World, who's like,
Starting point is 00:39:09 what? Bad Chad. This is weird. They're caught holding hands. That's so weird that you, that you, that you, We're just talking about your breakup. That is so weird. Surprise.
Starting point is 00:39:20 Okay. Interesting. Yeah, can you think of it? I kind of just threw this at you, but I'm trying to find a breakup. Can you not? Yeah. Anything else. Like, can you not poke me on Facebook after we broke up?
Starting point is 00:39:33 Oh, I see. We're on good terms, so I don't want to like. Well, okay. This doesn't have to be you personally because I feel the same way. I'm like, I don't want to like be jabby. My only jab was showing up. on my popular page otherwise I'm like I'm not going there yeah yeah totally but I could also I could speak from like my not my most recent recent X okay so I think I'm I'll do that okay um oh this is hard I know
Starting point is 00:40:00 I'm trying to scroll now and find it on Facebook because people I mean I unleashed some beasts in the Facebook group when I said can you not can you not well my so mine is like outdated but like can you not put your away message on my space at dashboard confession lyric no because those were always really sad and I'm emo and it always was like I know that you're trying to let me know you're sad god I love dashboard I know so good so good and he lives here that's so cool Chris Corolla he does he sure does oh I didn't know that you don't see it all I should try and get him on the pod come on um I was dying laughing reading some of these girls can you nuts because I was like oops sorry I like really really really
Starting point is 00:40:45 triggered some people here I might one of my friends um Kaylee Shore who's a great little country artist in town she's so cute yeah her I guess her ex and she tweeted this so I am not putting him on blast but apparently her ex was still connected on Bluetooth to her one of her like little speakers oh no and he was playing like all of their songs like the songs they had together can wait that's kind of cute yeah but he's a bad boy oh okay but that's her heart I mean I mean, she's like, what is this? I thought you were going to say he was watching, like, some crazy porn or, like, listening to, like, listening to, like, other girls, like, Instagram stories or something. Nope, nope, just creep status.
Starting point is 00:41:26 Oh, okay. That's really weird, but, I mean, there's the romantic in me. I'm like, he misses her. Yeah, he's probably, if he's a dick, then I don't know how bad from. Yeah, exactly. He's been bad. Okay, like, can you not tell me that we're better off his friends? That's annoying.
Starting point is 00:41:41 I mean, can you not go to Canary Islands with my friends for a holiday? Like, see, everything gets like really personal on here. That's very personal. Can you not tell me we broke up because I cheated on you when you really cheated on me? Like, what God? How does that happen? I thought it was going to get funny, but I actually, I was laughing, but I was like, uncomfortable laughing. Like, I was like, they're sad.
Starting point is 00:42:04 I know. Can you, can you not? Yeah. I don't even know. Can you, I was going to say, can you not get so dark on my can you not? Please. I feel terrible. It's getting me down the rabbit hole here.

And the amount of time it takes you to floss your teeth, pet your dog, do a few sit-ups, maybe some push-ups, or just listen to the sound of my voice. You can get a true cash offer.

Starting point is 00:43:11 I asked Twitterland to ask questions. I mean, my Twitter, I don't know if I've got that many questions for somebody. It's really. Thanks, guys. It's really sweet. Do you know who Tia Booth is from Bachelor World? She, it's okay. I don't judge. And I almost would maybe judge you more if you did. Oh, okay. And you're like, oh, you want to Rassler. There we go. I'm just a really big fan of you. Well, I'm a big fan of you. Is that weird? No. Hell no. Hale no. So Tia was on, I think, two seasons ago, the last Bachelor. And she said, ask if she remembers me fan-girling her in the Cancun airport, circa 2013. Oh, my God, 2013.
Starting point is 00:43:54 That's a long time ago. But I've only been to Cancun once, so I do, like, remember the trip. But I don't remember anybody freaking me out. So she must have been really sweet. She's from Arkansas, and she's got a really, really cute accent. Oh, I love it. Yeah. That's really, really sweet.
Starting point is 00:44:11 It is adorable. Caitlin Clark says, favorite song you've written as a pop punk artist and favorite song that you've written as a country artist. The favorite pop punk song would have to be, wish you were here. That was on our EP before we broke up. And I wrote that with Matt Scannell from Vertical Horizon, which was really cool. And then my favorite country song that I've written, gosh, there's one on the new record called Bring Me Downtown and it's basically like it's after a breakup and you're actually
Starting point is 00:44:46 talking to the town like you're personifying the town and being like why do you have to bring me why do you have to be a Bring Me Downtown and like everywhere you go like everywhere I go you're reminding me of him right why do you have to be like doing this to me so like that's clever yeah it's like kind of a cool twist on that yeah I like that I'm proud of that one that's cool flex um Lexi wants to know what Lexi Osborne what did she think of Blake Shelton as a coach and a human oh he was awesome I mean he's like he's the way you expect yeah you know he's super funny really laid back and very um he was really consoling because I like I said before I had it kind of a hard time through the show and being like nervous and everything and he was always you know coming backstage and being like you know you're you're doing great and kind of talking me down and as a coach you know it's just all one thing like yeah He's not, like, all of a sudden, the coach, and then all of a sudden, like, the normal Blake Shelton, like, he's, it's all in one.
Starting point is 00:45:46 That's nice. Yeah. So he was just, he's a great human being. Wow. Consistency is always a good quality to have. I know, girl. Amanda Feist, Gonzales. Gonzales.
Starting point is 00:45:57 What are you most excited about, about going on tour with Marin Morris? Oh. P.S. You're going on tour with Marin Morris. I know. That's so great. I'm so excited. Yeah, that's going to be.
Starting point is 00:46:09 That's going to be really fun. Yeah. I mean, I'm excited because she's a good friend of mine and we have a lot of fun and we always end up talking about some stuff. She seems like a good time. Oh, she's such a good time. But I'm also a fan. So I'm going to be singing along, watching her every set.
Starting point is 00:46:25 And it's just going to be. And her fans are super loyal and really excited. And they are energetic. So I'm excited for the shows. That's so cool. I'm like reading some of these. And I feel like we talked about all these questions like through the podcast, too, which It's nice because, like, people want to know, like, how you met Sam and where your inspiration comes from your new album.
Starting point is 00:46:46 And so I feel like we've addressed a lot of this. Yeah. Good job, us. Good job us. You know what? It's like I already read these questions and channeled them into my own interview. Weird. You thief.
Starting point is 00:46:57 I am a thief. She stole your questions, guys. It's not nice. Well, they're all things I really wanted to know, too. So I think we touched on this, too. Julie R. wanted to know what charities are close to your heart. So what was the name of it again?
Starting point is 00:47:10 Unlikely Heroes. That's one that I absolutely love. There's actually a charity. It's more of like an organization that a friend of mine who passed away a few years ago, his mom and sister started. And there's actually a song on the record that he was an amazing pianist. And he sent me a song idea a few years ago. And I actually put it on the record just like as a like an iPhone recording, just on the record as an interlude. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:37 But all the proceeds from that song will go to the organization his mom and sister started on his behalf and in his honor. Oh, that's amazing. Yeah. So that it's called We Are Gavi and it just helps musicians that are kind of up and coming in L.A. at the school he went to and giving them kind of an opportunity to get a head start and give them like a little money at the end of the year and pick a student who's been really positive and good and a good person because Gavi was like the best person ever. So, yeah, that's one that I'm continuing to work with. And then Nashville Humane Association. Okay.
Starting point is 00:48:14 Yeah. Just went to visit them yesterday, actually. You did. Yes. And that was really sweet, really sad, but they're taking good care of the pups and the cats. Oh, my gosh. I want to obviously rescue my next dog, but I'm, like, so busy right now that I want to make sure I'm a good dog mom, too, because I'm obsessed. So, I just can't wait.
Starting point is 00:48:33 Yeah, I want to rescue the next dog. So I always look at adopt a Golden Nashville because I'm obsessed with Golden's. There you go. Yeah. So I keep, I keep, I'm in contact with the lady who started it just because I'm like, please. Yeah, I want to. Help me find my, my person. Oh, you'll be a good dog mom.
Starting point is 00:48:54 Oh, I'm like a little bit of a helicopter dog mom, though. Like, I'm crazy. That's all right. Okay. They love it. They love being smothered. Oh, so especially. What is your dog?
Starting point is 00:49:04 What kind is your dog again? He's a French bold dog. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Cuppie? Yeah, so cute. How did you come up with that name? I, my ex and I just, like, were talking about dog names. You got to keep the dog?
Starting point is 00:49:15 I did. It was a very, very kind gesture. I know. We got him together, so, and he's, and, and my ex tours a lot, like a lot, a lot. And when I tour, I leave from Nashville so I can bring Cuppie with me. Oh, that's nice. So it was really more of a logistical thing, but, but yeah, he, we just thought it was a funny name. It is.
Starting point is 00:49:34 Great dog name. I want to get a golden girl and name her Blanche, like one of the golden girls. Blanche, I love it. That's so good. A lot of people wondering about Hey Monday and just giving you love for Hey Monday. Oh, that's sweet. And what was the song that comes out, well, it's today, but when this air is sort of. If My Heart had a Heart.
Starting point is 00:49:51 I just want to say, I wish my heart had a heart. I love that title and I love the whole concept of the song. Thank you. I mean, I watched your Instagram story today. It sounds amazing. Thank you. I'm very excited because, like, it seems like, A lot of people relate to that.
Starting point is 00:50:06 And it doesn't even have to be in a relationship status. It could be anything, like being mourning a loss of somebody and wishing you didn't miss them. And like, I wish I could just flip that switch and not feel sad anymore. But we just can't do that. I know. I used to have this picture on my wall that said it was like a light switch and it said feelings on or off. And I'm that you'd be like, it's just a visual thing for me. I'd be like, off.
Starting point is 00:50:30 Yeah. Go to bed. Please. For the love of God. Stay off. Okay, I'm going to ask you one more question. Fellow Cassidy here, Cassidy Crisp. She wants to know, is that your real name or your stage name?
Starting point is 00:50:42 Cassidy Pope? Cassidy Pope, yes. No, but her name's Cassidy Crisp. She wants to know. What did I say? She wants to know. She wants to know if Cassidy Pope is your real name or stage name. I said her name.
Starting point is 00:50:54 Okay, yeah, yeah, it is. It's my real name. It's a good name. Yeah, my mom just was feeling real creative, I guess, and the spelling of it. And, yeah, no, I love it. Yeah, thank you. It's a great name. Thanks so much.
Starting point is 00:51:06 Also, where can people find, like, your tour dates and your music and, like, everything like that coming up? I have my website, Cassidy Pope.com, and it's filled with all of that. I've got some fun bundles that people can get to for the album release that I'm not, like, selling anywhere else. It's just online. So, but, yeah, all the tour dates are on there. And they're on Facebook, too, on, like, all the shows that come up there. Okay, perfect. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:33 And Instagram is. Twitter? Is it your just full name? It's just my name. And it's the blue checkmark, damn it. Nobody else. Don't get it twisted. Don't get it twisted. But that's, but you spell it C-A-S-S-A-D-E. Correct. Yeah, okay. That is it. That's me. Okay. And this is a question from me. Are you ready? I'm ready.
Starting point is 00:51:52 Which country has the fastest growing population? America. Ireland. Every day it's doubling. Oh, good. Is that a good one? That was a very good one. Thank you. That was amazing.
Starting point is 00:52:10 I was not expecting that. But that was a good guess because Nashville does grow by 125 people every day. I was like, if that's any indication, maybe there's no other states like that, too. So I see where your head's at. Thank you. Anyways, thank you so much for being here. Thanks. This was such a pleasure.
Starting point is 00:52:25 Good luck with everything. Thank you. And I can't wait to hear the new album. I feel like it's going to be just a real treat for everybody. I sure hope so. It will be. You're welcome. I'm Caitlin Bristow. I'll see you next Tuesday.
