Off The Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe - Cassadee Pope: Thriving > Surviving

Episode Date: October 5, 2021

Kaitlyn sits down for a long overdue Zoom catch up with extremely talented, Grammy nominated artist, Cassadee Pope! Speaking of Zoom, Cassadee shares how her fears of writing music over Zoom ...rather than in person have definitely disappeared as she’s written her new album throughout the pandemic - although both KB and Cassadee are looking forward to connecting with their fans on tour ASAP. They bond over their mutual love of Nashville and share their fave things to do in the city (and plan a future hangout), but also speak on how much it’s changed over the years… watch out for those pedal tours! Kaitlyn and Cassadee share tips on overcoming comparison culture and making space for everyone to succeed, how vulnerability can be used as a strength, and how they both stay grounded (sometimes literally). We love this human “bean” (even though sometimes she does something strange on stage) and know the Vinos will, too! Check out her new album “Thrive” on October 15th and follow Cassadee on Instagram @cassadeepope. APARTMENTS.COM - The most popular place to find a place. We're getting there. And I'm beyond pumped.
Starting point is 00:02:27 for it so let's freaking go i can't wait to get back to nashville and rock out with my i said it i said it you know what i mean that that saying doesn't really apply but it just drives the feelings home it has been way too long thank god for tictock or else i'd have to add a little oil to my rusty dance moves anyways i am so excited to have grammy nominated platinum selling singer songwriter cassidy pope on the pod today not only is she extremely talented but she's just so inspiring when it comes to being open and true to your authentic self. We talk about how writing and releasing songs is super vulnerable and how to block out the haters in the world and just do you.
Starting point is 00:03:10 I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. She's so sweet. Oh my gosh, look at your hair color. It looks so good. Thank you. I'm like, it's kind of gross because it's, um, it washes out. Um, so I'm like trying to wash it the least amount as possible, which is pretty gross. Wait, what do you use to color your hair or do you get it done at a salon or do you do it yourself? I go to the salon, yeah. Oh, okay. It's, I, they use like,
Starting point is 00:03:44 I guess they call it vivid color. I don't know. I guess it's like a topical more of a, less of a I did that when I did my hair pink and I really loved it. But yeah, same thing. I tried to just not wash it as much as possible because it fades each time. I was trying to remember how many years ago that was that we did a podcast together. And I feel like it was like four. It was because I think it was right before my new album like back in 2018 maybe. Yeah, that would make sense. Oh my gosh. Yes. So much happens in in in like I even just in a year so much can happen. So in that amount of time like it's insane how much changes in all of our lives even if we're living in the same city down the road so yeah with like mutual friends like I see you hanging with people I hang with all the
Starting point is 00:04:34 time all the time we need to hang out I know well when I come back to Nashville we'll definitely make it happen because yeah we have so many mutual friends it's almost silly that we haven't hung out yet I was going to ask you because so many people come to visit Nashville and one of the biggest questions I always get asked the people's favorite place to go to eat what is your favorite spot in Nashville? It's Lockland Table in East Nashville. Um, it's, it's small and quaint. It's no frills. Um, they have an open kitchen with like the big, um, wood fire oven for pizzas and the staff's always really nice. They have a killer happy hour where everything's six dollars. It's insane. But it's like, it's really casual, but still really charming. And I just, I just love it. It's got a neighborhood feel to it.
Starting point is 00:05:20 I love that. I used to live in East Nashville and I loved it just because of how quaint certain places were and it's just so unique. And I've never been there before. So I'm adding that to my list. Yeah, we'll go. We'll go when you come back. Yes, please take me. I need to experience that. That sounds amazing. But I feel like I've of course asked certain questions before, but I can't remember. Did you grow up in Nashville or where did you grow up? I can't remember. No, I grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida. I was there until I was like 21. I mean, I toured a lot with my old band, so I feel like I kind of grew up around at different places, but then around 21, I moved to L.A. I was there for like three and a half years. And then after the voice in 2013, I came here and I've been here ever since. Oh, okay. Oh, so you've really seen the city change a lot, too. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. It's a different place. It's great. But there's some things that I'm like, do we need the pedal taverns? Oh, my gosh. I know because it's turning, especially. especially downtown, just so touristy, which Nashville, from, I mean, I've only been there for five years,
Starting point is 00:06:27 but from what I remember, even, it's gotten so crazy even since in last five years, but it used to be just such a small town vibe there, like in Nashville. And like, everyone can just go wherever and do whatever they want and not get bothered. And it was just like a whole different vibe. And now I feel like all of L.A. is moving to Nashville. It's also like Bachelorette capital of the world for Bachelorette parties, and it's just getting nutty over there. Yeah, it is. It's good for, you know, where our property values are going up.
Starting point is 00:06:59 That's great. But yeah, you can't just mosey on downtown for a drink anymore. It's like you got to fight a crowd. It's nuts. I can't even like drive past it. I get anxiety just driving. Like it's, there's so much going on. I mean, obviously that's where people are going to go if they're only coming to Nashville once.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And it's like a must see, but it's very overwhelming. I used to go all the time when I lived in Nashville when I first moved there, I would, I was like, honky talk central every Friday. And now I'm like, you can't do it. Yeah, it's terrifying. Also, there is a new one that, like, my boyfriend and I drove by the other day that we laughed so hard at. It was a massage chair bus.
Starting point is 00:07:39 You're joking. No, we, it's open air. So there's like a side of it that has no windows. And we drove by it and the. just people sitting on the side in massage chairs. Nobody was talking to each other.
Starting point is 00:07:53 They were just all looking at their phones. And they were reclined a little bit. And it was just, I was like, did they pay to do that? Like, that's, I don't understand. I don't understand. They've got every kind of bus that you could possibly have
Starting point is 00:08:09 driving around Nashville of like the pedal tavern started it all. And then there was like the tractor. You could like go on the tractor in the back and then there's like the party bus where you're just dancing and there's other there's a hot tub now there's a hot tub yep a hot tub he i call it the human soup bus because just you know they're not you're no they're not draining that between every party there's not that is gnarly a human soup bus i mean that's not what it's actually called but that's what's the
Starting point is 00:08:44 name i'm giving it that makes complete sense wow nashville it's what like what will they do next i feel like the yeah the options are unlimited there with what they're like massage chairs oh my god if they had yeah where does it end like what's the line with dogs like a dog bus i'd hit that yes yes 100% with like enclosed like this is the thing that's like freaking me out about all these is all these are open there's no one wear seatbelts everybody's hanging off like a dude fell off and got ran over recently Well, because they're all drinking, too. It's like, I've been on a pedal tavern.
Starting point is 00:09:21 It's extremely dangerous if you're drinking and pedaling. It's like, and you're really working for it too. Oh, my gosh. You are. Nashville's just so great because I just, I live for live for live music. And you obviously live for live for live music. And wait, don't you have a concert like tomorrow? No, it's a lot of things have been like shifted around recently, COVID protocols.
Starting point is 00:09:46 and stuff so it's been a little bit hectic that oh that's too bad i mean i feel like everyone was just starting to get back into the swing of things and yeah it's like oh just kidding and i remember actually watching your lives when covid first happened because i would be like oh get to tune in for some live music and you just sit there and play you play songs and i would just like have it up on my i'd have a glass of wine and listen to you play live music it was so cool oh thanks i mean it was literally like my coping mechanism because I miss playing so much and then you know I realize like I can't just I'm not going to be sitting around the house not singing for however long this is going to be I need to sing and I I love singing by myself but I also love singing for like I'm an entertainer I love
Starting point is 00:10:30 entertaining so that was my way of like doing I think it was every Wednesday I was doing like a 30 minute set and Sam would come sing with me and stuff so yeah thanks for tuning in it was really cool I I loved that like a few country artists started doing that or maybe others did too but that's what I noticed and I loved it because people were just craving some sort of connection with each other and music obviously brings people together and it was just like a little um break from the craziness to just like listen to some music and it felt live because it was like you were live and it was just really cool and also how did you become friends with the guy from modern family what's his name oh Eric uh Stone Street
Starting point is 00:11:11 yeah that was super random we ended up at the Daytona 500 together like I don't know four years ago or something I was just there as a fan but I know a bunch of people there so like I got to bop around Daytona and he was the Grand Marshal that day and so he just hung out all day me him and my sister and then someone from NASCAR who was taking us around and he's just so nice and he and his girlfriend Lisa like Lisa's awesome she's just like I've only really really met him once and they've just stayed in touch so that's so cool yeah this is the coolest thing that was another thing i saw in your live where i was like what in the heck like how is this is the most random friendship i have a bunch of random friendships but like that one i was like that's so
Starting point is 00:11:57 interesting because obviously i love modern family and sarah highland is dating someone from bachelor world and so it's all very oh yeah not even dating they're almost married now yes it's all interconnected that's cool it really is I just love that show. It's truly the best. And there's always like a life lesson at the end where I get emotional. And like it's just. With the montage.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Yeah. Yeah. The montage at the end gets me every time. Same. You know, one of my favorite parts of the day is something I'm not actually awake for. Okay. Pretty weird.
Starting point is 00:12:30 But seriously, I'm talking about sleep. I love sleeping. I think we all know by now that it's important to invest in a comfortable mattress. But it's also important to put just as much thought and care into the sheet. into the sheets you'll be sleeping on night after night. I've talked about it on the pod before. I've been a fan of Bull and branch sheets for a while. They know how important it is to have comfortable quality sheets and they started with a mission to produce the highest quality
Starting point is 00:12:53 sheets and to make the world a better place in the process. And that's still true to this day. So they provide high quality sheets at a fair price and they're made with a higher standard with toxin-free processes and fair trade certification to ensure workers are paid fair living wages. their organic cotton sheets actually continue to get softer wash after wash, which is another thing I truly, truly love about them. So you don't need to worry that throwing these sheets in the wash will make them less cozy. I actually think the sheets are the perfect gift to Christmas is coming up. Get that shopping in.
Starting point is 00:13:26 So to experience the best sheets you've ever felt choose bowl and branch, you can try them worry-free for 30 nights with free shipping and returns. And my listeners get an exclusive 15% off your first set of sheets with promo code Vine 15 at bowl and branch.com. That's bowl and branch, B-O-L-L-N branch.com. Promocode Vine 15. They made it so easy to build a fall wardrobe that will have you looking and feeling great with all their versatile mix and match styles. I just feel my best when I'm comfortable. I know I've said that a million times, but I really do. All of Express's pieces
Starting point is 00:14:06 are high quality, comfortable, and just perfect to have in the closet for fall in any time of the year, really. Express Belize, the confidence is the best outfit, I would have to agree, but that their soft sets are a close second. Their sets and cozy combos are basically the unofficial uniform for fall. They're made to mix and match, which I love doing with all of my sets. Their fleece sets, yes, please. They also have an amazing selection of jeans, including curvy, super soft. That's truly their coziest denim yet. And FlexX jeans, which are designed to fit up to three sizes all in one pair. I think that's just genius invention because our bodies change week to week. That's normal. And now your jeans can flex along with you.
Starting point is 00:14:46 You guys have to check out all that Express is offering this fall, and always, to be honest. You can shop confidence boosting styles in store and online at express.com. When you do go back to live tours and stuff, do you first of all, do you get nervous for any show? And then are you going to have an extra added layer of nerves? Because for me personally, when I think about doing my podcast tour, crowds of people now makes me anxious. So I already got a little bit nervous before I'd like come out, but I, it was like good nerves. I was excited. But now I'm like, oh my gosh, crowds. I have like a new anxiety that's coming on. Yeah, it's, it's, I hear you there. I've had one show back, no, two shows back with like an actual
Starting point is 00:15:35 crowd and I was so overwhelmed with joy that it kind of masked the any like nerves I had. I think having a show here in Nashville or having a show that's like streaming for some reason that always gets me a little bit more nervous because I of the people that I know are watching. But I generally don't get nervous before shows. It's a very, it feels very natural for me to like get on stage and sing it's just always felt so much like home. But being in crowds, like I. more weirded out like i i haven't fully gone back into meet and greets yet um because i know
Starting point is 00:16:13 that i'm putting myself and everybody else in a position to maybe not be safe and um not everybody wants to wear a mask and that's their prerogative so like i haven't really dove into that yet i'm going to have to eventually because like i am going to do a tour next year um and we will have to put things in place to keep everybody safe but yeah i've kind of like had to dodge that a little bit which kind of sucks because i love hanging with fans yeah so i feel the same way with just podcasting like these people listen to you every you know week or day or you know they're just they have your voice and then to connect with them and you're like wow i like you know this about me or are you like care to show up and like meet me and you realize how many people you know how many people
Starting point is 00:17:05 are on the other side of what you're doing. It's so special. And same thing with, you know, the COVID thing. If you're saying that's like home for you on stage and to have that taken away from you is something that's like such a passion in your life that you don't realize, well, you probably realize how lucky you are forgetting to do it, but you don't realize that it could be, you know, taken away from a global pandemic. So to be back out there on stage, I can imagine how overwhelmed, like, with joy you would be. Yeah. I actually, during quarantine, I was thinking about all the moments on stage that I took for granted that maybe the crowd wasn't reacting the way that I had hoped or whatever and I'd let it get in my head or there's like, you know, maybe one fan that looked like they were miserable the whole set. It really like got to me. And then I just like made this conscious decision like when I get to be on stage again, I'm going to turn inward for joy and I'm going to have fun with my band and myself and enjoy the activity of singing and telling my story. And and, you know, with that,
Starting point is 00:18:05 kind of produces like a magnetic energy for the crowd like instead of only feeding off the crowd and relying on them you know create your own magnetic energy up there and and it will reach people and i've really applied that and it's been a game changer for me it's been like gosh so when things are being shifted around i'm like damn it like i want to get back out there this sucks yeah that's that's so hard but that's a good way to look at it i i feel like that would throw me off so much if I was doing a podcast in front of a live audience and someone look like they're having a miserable time. Like it could obviously have nothing to do with you. They could be in a fight with their boyfriend or like something happened and they're trying to like have a good time.
Starting point is 00:18:49 But I would, that would, that's good advice for me to have that for next time I'm on stage doing that because that would really affect me. Yeah, it's, it's, you know, usually for me when those moments happen, it's like when I'm like an opener or when I'm headlined. a fair where it's like they might not be like super fans of mine they're just there to see live music so but like my headlining tours are like my you know little club shows where like my hardcore fans are there i don't run into that but there there are situations where you just kind of have to like okay i'm just going to have fun up here no matter what's going on out there yeah we'll do it yeah the show must go on as they say um it's been quite a busy year for you and regardless of
Starting point is 00:19:32 everything that's happening in in the world you already released a couple songs and have an album coming out soon. So congratulations on that. Thank you. Yeah, I wrote the whole thing last year during quarantine. Really? On Zoom. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:46 I was like terrified of Zoom. I was like, how am I going to write music on Zoom? Like, how does that even happen? And the first session I did was my single that came out in May, what the Stars see. That was the first Zoom session I had. And I was like, oh, I think I could do this. And then realized, like, I actually prefer it to be.
Starting point is 00:20:05 honest. Yeah. Because you don't have to wear pants. You don't have to wear pants. That's one. You don't have to take into account traffic. And like usually I'm, you know, go to Music Road to write and then that traffic at the end of the session is always brutal. Yeah. I don't have to worry about the dogs. Like who's going to watch the dogs? I don't have to worry about bringing a snack. Yeah. I can just go down to my kitchen and grab an apple, you know. They were just like all these things I didn't have to to think about when it came to like stifling my creativity. So actually writing last year on Zoom was like the kind of the best process. And I ended up with this album that I'm super excited about where I'm blending my pop punk roots and my country roots.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Yes, I love that you're doing that. First of all, the Zoom thing, I totally relate to that because I thought I never wanted to do a podcast over Zoom in my life. I thought, no, in person is so much better. It's, you can connect better. It's like, it just will flow better. And then I did a couple of zooms. I'm like, what? This is incredible.
Starting point is 00:21:08 I, like, don't have to fly to L.A. every month, like, to do all the, yeah, it's so, I could have so many different conversations. It's amazing. Yeah. Okay. Mixing the punk and rock and country. I'm so happy you're doing that because I saw somewhere that you struggled back in, I don't know when, but you struggled with not wanting people to know you were in. in a band because it made you more rock pop other than country. So when was it that you started feeling comfortable with that?
Starting point is 00:21:37 Because I love, I know that like obviously the industry has been evolving and changing, but I know like a lot of musicians have felt like they need to stay in their box. And I think lately, I don't know when the shift has happened, but when did it happen for you personally that you were like, you know what? I'm going to embrace what I love and who I am and mix. it altogether. Well, you know, the reason I really tried to withhold that side of myself was outside influence from people that were on my team and, you know, coming off of a show like The Voice, coming to a town like Nashville, you kind of have to prove yourself that you're an artist
Starting point is 00:22:17 and especially prove that your country because my whole story was I came from a band and no one never talked about the fact that I learned to sing on country music. Like I'm a country girl too. And so I had to prove myself and really try and distance myself from my pop rock roots. But I think I started to really get back to it and start that process in like 2018. When I left my label at the time, I was continuing to write. I don't think I really fully landed where I have now because I was unlearning so much and realizing I didn't have these boundaries that were set for me anymore. Um, and so fast forward to 2020, when I really had nothing but time to sit and think and reflect on what makes me happy, I just looked at like the things that make me different and stand out. And it's that I actually have an authentic past in pop punk music. And I can do it in a real way and not, it's not contrived. It's not, I'm not following a trend, which seems like emo is coming back. But it is. It's a perfect timing for me.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Yeah, there you go. Yeah, but just, you know, I think last year was really the year that I, like, found my footing and found the group of people I was writing with that really helped me bring that to life, people that I toured with back when I was in my band, people that I knew from other bands. You know, I was writing with people who were in L.A. and New York, so on Zoom. So it just felt like the options were more endless than they had ever been. And so that's kind of when I really landed. But I think that process started in, like, 2018. That's so cool. I love that you're doing that because it probably just, again, brings you so much
Starting point is 00:24:08 of joy to mix all of those together. Have you ever met Haley Williams? Yes. She's. I'm obsessed with her. Like, I, she was just like my girl crush, like, I don't know, 10 years ago. And I used to try. And, like, she's why I started voice lessons and wanted to sing.
Starting point is 00:24:26 And she was sitting behind me on my place. the other day and I was like and I did I'm like I cannot bring myself to ever say hi to anyone if they're like a somebody I just can't do it I can't do it really no I can't do it I feel like if anybody could do it in a sweet kind way it's you oh thank you for saying that but I literally I wanted to just be like you were like my inspiration and I know like who wouldn't want to hear that but I just never want to bug anyone I always like I'm scared that they're going to disappoint me or I'm scared that I'm going to bother them and I'm just like I'm just going to leave them up here yeah yeah Yeah, I mean, everybody's different.
Starting point is 00:24:59 I don't know, like, what her vibe is if she wants people coming up to her or not. But I know from experience, she's awesome and she's really kind. So, like, I don't know. I encourage you to say something next time. But, yeah, like, my old band, Hey Monday and Paramore were constantly compared, which was annoying. Yeah, because, like, there weren't, I mean, there were a lot of female-fronted bands, but there weren't a ton that were doing, like, a mainstream sound. And we just kept getting compared.
Starting point is 00:25:27 and we never got put on the same shows or festivals. And, like, that would have been so fun to be able to collaborate. They almost tried to pit you guys against each other instead of making it, like, a beautiful thing. Yeah, totally. And then, like, fast forward now in Nashville, we've run into each other a bunch, like, at the aesthetician's office. Now we're just, like, adult women going in and getting, like, facials and, like, talking about our dogs and stuff.
Starting point is 00:25:53 That's so funny. I don't know if you guys are anything like me, but sometimes. Sometimes it's tough to find the perfect gift for the guy in your life for the holidays, whether it's your dad, your brother, your significant other. But with Travis Matthews handy holiday gift guide, you can browse gifts for him by price point or through curated collections tailored to interest and personality. So this is actually perfect for Jay because he already wears a lot of Travis Matthew. He's such a fan.

Starting point is 00:27:40 Go to guyco.com, get a quote, and see how much you could save. It's GEICO easy. Visit guyco.com. Today, that's guyco.com. everything changes so much i feel like even just thinking about the bachelor franchise like putting two women against each other when i was the bachelor at they made another girl go against me and the guys got to pick and i just feel like i don't feel like that would land so much anymore like you know the women of country you guys come together and perform together and women are just having such a moment in country music which is amazing to see i yeah even in my closest like you know bachelors relationships or girlfriends or past bachelorets or just even people in this industry on
Starting point is 00:28:29 Instagram I do the whole comparison thing and I go down a spiral sometimes and I try to not compare myself to others because obviously we all shouldn't do that but do you find that people do that in the music industry as well yeah definitely I mean I think as human beings it's just an innate thing to do that um especially just growing up in a society that does that um and makes us feel like we need to be skinnier, better, better looking or smarter or funnier. But yeah, the industry has a way of doing that. Like, I remember being on a label here in Nashville and, you know, them telling me like, oh, that one, she doesn't sing as good as you.
Starting point is 00:29:11 And oh, you did so much better or whatever. And it's like, at the time, I was so insecure and needed that validation. Like, oh, thank you. But now I would be like, why are you saying that? I dig her. I think she's great. Like we're different. Why are you pinning us against each other? So it's just it's definitely, I don't know what it is. I think like people in the industry want to keep their artists or their creators on their toes and not let them get complacent or to, you know, to buddy buddy with everybody or it'll take away from their competitiveness. But like when I see one of my good friends doing well, I don't look at it and get jealous. I look at it and like, damn, like that's amazing. I want to do that too. That's how I think about it. So. I think you're right. We've had so much pressure just in the world of appearance and what women should be and like that it should be competitive. And so we naturally compare ourselves. But I think for me personally, if you work on yourself and grow as a human, you start to root for other people instead of thinking of, you can still compare yourself and you can still get in your head and do all that. But instead of letting that make you.
Starting point is 00:30:23 completely insecure, you choose to root for them and realize there's space for everybody to win and succeed, and then you almost use that as fuel to be better. Yeah, it's so crazy. Like the rut you can get in when you do compare yourself, because when, you know, when something awesome happens in your career and you've been rooting for all your friends, they're just going to want to root for you even more. They're, you know, and it's not that you have to be supportive of other people to get that back when something good happens for you. But that's just collateral. Like, that's just something that happens naturally after you've been a good person and rooted for other people. So, like, there's really no negative that comes out of you, like, cheering somebody else
Starting point is 00:31:05 on. That's so true. And you just, every, like, you just never know what it's going to happen for you when or what's going to happen for them. And you just all have to celebrate each other's success. And still, you can, you know, be like, I'm very self-aware. I know, I know, I know, I'm comparing myself. I know when I'm going down a rabbit hole, I can stop myself now, but that's taken a lot of work. But once you get there and you realize what it can do to lift other people up, you're right. There's no downside to it. Yeah. I mean, and sometimes, like, I do the comparison thing too. And sometimes I mute people, like just not because they're posting anything wrong, but because it's triggering me in a way. And I'm like, they're not doing anything wrong. I'm reacting a certain
Starting point is 00:31:48 way maybe I need a sec to like mute this person and then come back to it when I feel like I've gotten my shit together because like you put like someone posting a picture in their bathing suit looking stunning shouldn't make me feel like shit right right like there's that should and that happens yeah and so I'm like gonna put a pin in that yeah come back to it and you know I feel the exact same way the exact same way you just that's that's being self-aware I love that one of the songs that you released recently is called Say It First. I love this song. And when you hit that note at like the 230 mark, I was like, I got full body chills. It was so good. And I mean, you've always been open about being vulnerable and how you think it's, you know, a strength,
Starting point is 00:32:36 not a weakness. And I feel like songwriting obviously is just being vulnerable. And of course, that's a strength for you. But I've heard you talk about the meaning behind it. But can you kind of explain to my listeners what the song is about because I feel like a lot of people would be able to relate to it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, yeah, absolutely. Vulnerability is a strength. And I think it looks many different ways. And I think being vulnerable can also mean making a tough decision like breaking up with somebody. And that's what this song's about. It's about two people in a relationship knowing that it's over or at least knowing something's wrong, but only one person having the courage and the bravery to end things, you automatically become the bad guy, which sucks. But I would
Starting point is 00:33:19 rather be that than stay in something that's not right for me. I actually wrote this song before that message even meant anything to me. I wrote it like five years ago. Really? Yeah. And I, you know, I know that sometimes it can make a song feel irrelevant, but like to me, since I wrote that song, I had to be the person to say it first in a very like kind of public way and and when I was with engaged you know and so um it was it was really hard and and I was like thinking of this album and songs that I wanted to be on it and I remembered that song and I was thinking there's a time to ever be able to like sing this from the you know depths of my soul it's now after going through that so yeah I think the song resonates with people that have had to be that person and it the song kind of creates a
Starting point is 00:34:15 space for that person to to not feel guilt or shame because that those are feelings that come along with being the breaker upper um yeah and there's actually like another song on the record that talks about that too like about the fact that just because you break a heart doesn't mean your heart doesn't break too and it's you're not really given the you're not really given the space from a lot of people in your life. Like I learned the people in my life that were like, well, you did it so you can't be crying. And I was like, well, I'm going to have to distance myself for you. Let's create some boundaries. Yeah. Boundaries set. Yeah. You know, and I and I feel like this song also has so many different layers of like, you could also say it first in a nice way. You could
Starting point is 00:35:05 like say I love you first. There could be things you say first in your life that are all. awesome that you're like stepping out onto a ledge and declaring your love for someone and that's scary too so it's just a song about having the courage and the bravery to to state what you both are feeling but um the other person isn't ready to say yet yeah i love that it's a great idea and again so relatable to so many people how did you come up with the name thrive it's actually a song on the record oh it's one songs okay yeah it's uh it felt like a very like a staple song it's about not just surviving somebody, but thriving after what they've done to you and how, you know, it's definitely one of the most sassy songs on the record. It's anthemic. It has like a really
Starting point is 00:35:49 big sing-along moment throughout the song. So I just thought that was a really good, you know, staple song, a title track song. That's cool. I love the word thrive in general. So I thought that was cool. But now that song sounds awesome. I can't wait to hear it. Thanks. That's cool. Appreciate it. So obviously you're everyone knows you for music and obviously being on the voice and you've got so much going for you in the music world but what do you like to do on your days off?
Starting point is 00:36:19 Oh, I mean, I just love Bravo so much. Do you? I watch every Housewives franchise there is. The only one that I'm like not super sold on is like the below deck shows. Okay, I've never seen one of those. Yeah. It's, it's, you know, not enough drama for me.
Starting point is 00:36:41 I mean, I like the streaming and the drama. That doesn't, that don't make you bad people. I feel like that's, people love that TV. It's, yeah, it is what it is. I mean, you know, I feel like Bachelor and Bachelorette are like a different realm of that kind of TV, but, but just, you know, like we're, I feel like we're one and the same. Like, us fans. Yes. At least.
Starting point is 00:37:04 And I just, if it's a nice day, I really just, I love being out. outside. Like, even if it's just taking the dogs for a walk or something, I just feel like I get really grounded when I get outside. And I'm like, I feel the ground beneath my feet and all that. And, you know, I, yeah. Do you know your personality trait? Like, you know how there's some people are earth, fire, wind, water. Do you know what you are? I have no idea. I probably Earth. But I feel like there's four different, like, core personality. I don't know. I started following this guy on TikTok. And also, I just did some. I just did some. something. I had my, a girl that I know does tarot card reading. And so she did my cards. And I was asking her like tips on how, how to stay grounded. And she goes, she said, literally put your bare feet in dirt and, and just like, like, look up at the moon at night and like put your feet in dirt and just literally feel grounded. And so it's interesting that you say that because I don't think, like I don't think everybody feels that same way. Like I think certain
Starting point is 00:38:05 people have different things that makes them feel grounded. So it's interesting that you're as being outside and having your feet on the ground. Yeah, I mean, it's, it's, I think it's like actually like a scientific thing that they have really tested and it shows like people just, they even out there breathing, they feel less stress, they feel more connected to the world around them. And, and yeah, like, I think, I think being away from home and everything you just said, it's like, it creates this environment where you're you have to like really be purposeful with grounding yourself so that's good that you're doing that and like i i think too you know there are days where you're not going to get it
Starting point is 00:38:48 perfect and you're going to feel super chaotic and out of control and then and then like your body will let you know it like it lets me know it's like okay today you're not doing anything because i'm some days i have no drive at all and like i just i either take a walk or i i will go sit in a park or I will watch Bravo and I'm like totally content and I'm like great that was my day to just be I love that you listen to your body that's something I do as well that's benefited me so much from just like not feeling guilty about or calling myself lazy because I'm like definitely not so I'm like don't feel that way if you need to listen to your body and if you need to stay in bed or if like I get mega cramps depression anxiety around my period and I am I just
Starting point is 00:39:40 allow myself to fully just surrender to that time of the month and listen to my body and be like I don't want to get out of bed today. If I do do something like it's going to be something with the dogs outside and then I'll come back to the couch again and I'm not going to like I can I can really shut it off which has really benefited me. Yeah. That's such a that's such a good tool to have you know because like I think the whole I don't subscribe to the like sleep when you're dead thing like I just yeah I did that I've done that and I've like every year at the end of the year I get like super sick and I'm like well this can't be good yeah it's just not healthy sleep is like something you need to function it's like not drinking
Starting point is 00:40:25 water I'll drink water when I'm dead yeah we don't say that do we no so no yeah you have to learn the hard way but I'm yeah I'm glad you you are taking care of yourself out there yeah I'm like meetings with my therapist my psychic my tarot card reader like everyone it's so I was actually listening to a podcast with Casey Musgraves and I want to have her on my podcast because she talked about doing psychedelics and like her experience with that it was fascinating and so I haven't done that sometimes did you say you have done it I have it I really do I want to do it though same every time I hear someone talk about it. I'm like, it's the wildest thing I've ever heard, but like what comes from it, like, all of a sudden you're just, like, you come to face to face with like your childlike
Starting point is 00:41:11 self and you are just feeling empowered and creative and unique and just like a whole new human being after this psychedelic. And I'm like, okay, I'm listening. I'm intrigued. Yeah. It's like a guided trip kind of thing. Yeah, I want to do that. Yeah. Also, I just noticed you say, human being and it makes me so happy when people say that. Really? You're one of those people that say bean when you're saying being. Oh, bean. And I love it so much.
Starting point is 00:41:44 Like, I'm such a huge fan of Brene Brown. Yes. And she says human bean all the time. And I'm like, oh, it's so cute. I love it. That's hilarious. Human. I don't even think about it.
Starting point is 00:41:55 That's also my little human beans. Little human beans, like a little jumping bean. that's that was i mean minnie who's my podcast producer she was also she's been my friend for years and years and years my nickname from i lived in vancouver for 11 years and that was like my name on my work schedule was bean everybody calls me bean um in vancouver and so now i'm like i am just a little human bean you're human bean that's all we are in this world human beans that's so funny human beings i probably thought that's what it was when i was little uh it's that time of that podcast where i'm going to make you confess something to me.
Starting point is 00:42:36 Yeah, I had to think long and hard about this because I'm like, what am I, what do I confess? Because there's so many, like, super gross things from, like, childhood. We love gross things on this podcast. But there is one that I do actively. That's pretty gross. Yes. So as a singer, I use my diaphragm when I sing.
Starting point is 00:42:58 and so I before I sing I like kind of tap on it get get things going because like sometimes it makes me burp and so I try to get them out before I get on stage sometimes I don't get them all out and so I have mastered the in-between phrases burps stop it I will literally move the mic and just like burp into the air and then come back to the microphone and no one knows no one knows Because it's like, you know, the band's super loud and I move the mic away from my mouth and I get this thing out. Because by the way, if you're singing and you burp while you're singing, it doesn't sound like you just burped. It sounds like you just like completely f***ed up really bad. And like your voice just like cracks.
Starting point is 00:43:47 It doesn't sound like la. Yeah, yeah. And so no one would really know that you just burp. So I, yeah, I've mastered it in between phrases. That's impressive. That's almost like, like that's not embarrassing. It's almost like that's incredible. Oh, thank you.
Starting point is 00:44:06 Because it would be embarrassing if you accidentally just belched or something. Belched? Who even says belched anymore? Belched into the microphone. But I feel like the art of mastering it is very impressive. I've thought about that often with singers on stage. Like, what if you like have to burp or if you like, you know, sometimes you, like, choke on your own spit and can't stop coughing, like, oh, that happens?
Starting point is 00:44:31 Oh, yeah. I had one horrific time. Like, I have never experienced this since. I had a one single hair dangling in my throat, and I could not get it out. And every time I went to go sing, it was like, oh, oh, no. Because imagine, like, this little hair tickling your throat. It was like, I couldn't do anything about it. And I literally had to turn around, like, go to the drums and turn away from the crowd
Starting point is 00:44:59 and, like, stick my hand in my mouth and just try and get this hair. You're like, and that is my next embarrassing moment when I threw up on stage from sticking my hands to my throat to get a hair out of my throat. Oh, my gosh. Everybody thinks I'm just making myself throw up, but it really was just trying to get this hair. Dangly hair. Oh, my gosh. That's incredible.
Starting point is 00:45:20 Okay, well, I have one game for you before I let you go. and it's called What Would You Turn For? Basically, like, on the voice when they turn around and they like something. So I'm going to give you two things. You can only turn around or choose one of them. Okay. So some of them are music related.
Starting point is 00:45:44 Some are just random. Okay. What would you turn around for? Music or TV? Music. Wait, music or Bravo? music yeah i thought you'd say that yeah i love bravo but i don't know singing songs or writing songs oh singing songs okay beer or wine wine
Starting point is 00:46:09 which thank you for the wine of course oh my gosh i'm excited to drink it yeah i think i think you're going to like it i'm very proud of it yay piercings or tattoos tattoos i love tattoos as well. I'm craving another one. Performing for a crowd or recording in a studio? Performing for a crowd. I kind of figured since you said that you were overwhelmed with joy when you got to do it. Visit the future or the past? Oh, both scare me.
Starting point is 00:46:42 I think probably the past. I don't want to ruin anything. I'd rather just go back and... I always ask people this question, but it gets really deep. So I'm going to just ask it in the middle of this so that we can move on to lighter things after. But if you had an envelope that said the day you were going to die inside of it, would you open it? No. I wouldn't either. I would like really like put my willpower to the test and burn it or something. That's me too.
Starting point is 00:47:05 Yeah. Gosh, the day before, like what that would be awful. I know. That's what I, a lot of people would want to see that. And I just don't understand it because I think I would even like, they're like, well, yeah. Because what if it said a year and I got to do everything. I'd ever want to do in life in a year and I'm like I just wouldn't I would be so depressed and scared I would like curl in a ball and be like when's it happening like I wouldn't be able to enjoy
Starting point is 00:47:28 that year I'd go to the doctor every week and then just like what's something's wrong with me because something's going to happen yeah yeah yeah that would be awful I wouldn't even drive to the doctor I'd have the doctor drive to me because I'd be scared to get in a car like it was just uh okay yeah that's I always ask people that okay would you rather oh not would you rather I guess kind of but would you rather turn for underdressed or overdress or overdraft I love being underdressed, and one of my, like, I feel the most uncomfortable when I'm overdressed. Same, yeah. I tend to, like, tote that line of, like, if it's, like, an event about me or I'm performing or something, like, okay, I'll take it to that next level.
Starting point is 00:48:10 But if I'm just going somewhere fun, I'm like, jeans, probably. I feel that. Ooh, this is a hard one. country or pop slash punk oh oh that's tough okay i'm going to go with country because i think country has a lot of elements of pop and punk in it that i can kind of get everything i can kind of cheat a little bit i found the loophole i got it nice try kately yeah you got me jokes on me uh be invisible or a mind reader. Oh, invisible. I don't want to look in anybody's minds. I don't want to either. That would be scary. Okay, third nipple or extra toe? This is one that I thought about and talked about with my
Starting point is 00:48:57 podcast producer, and I went with an extra toe. You did? Okay. I guess it depends on like, I feel like an extra toe would be tough shoe-wise. Yeah. And a nipple, like, because there's no, like, substance under it to make it. It's not a boob. It's just an extra nipple. So I think I'd go an extra nipple. See, I was thinking more along the lines of if I had an extra toe that would give me an excuse to not wear high heels, I would never be able to. So I could just wear comfy shoes all the time and hide it. But you'd probably have to potentially get one different size shoe. Potentially. And then that creates a whole new problem. Which toe? Like, is there an extra big toe? Because if there's an extra big toe, then you might need a special shoe.
Starting point is 00:49:47 I didn't think it was going to get this deep. But now that we're here, I don't know. Maybe I'll take the third nipple. It's a big decision. It is a big decision. I'll have to think on this one later and get back to you. Thank you. The last one we had written down and I was like, I'm not asking her that. And you don't have to answer it. But it was Team Blake or Team Kelly. Oh, I know. I know. I'm saying, I mean, well, if I'm like, you know, looking at my life, where I've ended up, I would have to go with Team Blake over and over. That's true. That's true. Yeah, he picked. You, you were on his team. Yes. Yes. I, yeah. And if Kelly was there, I don't know, it would have been a tough decision.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Are you going on the Kelly Clarkson show? Did I read that somewhere or did you? I was on it. You were on it. Yes. I was. I did what the Starcy on it. And then she interviewed me and that's kind of where I announced my album Thrive was coming out in the fall. So, yeah. I love Kelly Clarkson. I feel like she's just such a fun fun lady she's awesome she's just who she is you know you don't have you're not you don't have to wonder that's who she is that's incredible well
Starting point is 00:50:53 I feel like everybody's going to be so excited for your for your album to come out I am and I'm just like I know we podcasted so long ago but I'm just proud of you as a human being I feel like you're just doing such great things you're so talented and you're a good human and that's what we like to see we like to see those people
