Off The Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe - Derek Hough: Mirrorballs, Dealbreakers & Pelvic Thrusts
Episode Date: September 14, 2021THE Derek Hough joins Kaitlyn to inspire us all to JUST DANCE (cue Gaga) and... be extremely productive with our time! Derek is like the male version of Beyoncé and seems to have unlimited h...ours in a day to perform numerous dances, while dance training others, choreographing dances, making hilarious pelvis thrusting videos that we can never unsee, caring for his doggies, winning a record-breaking 6 mirrorballs, bringing a new show “Derek Hough: No Limit” to Vegas AS WELL AS returning as a judge on the next season of DWTS. PHEW! But in times of stress and overwhelm, instead of asking himself “Why is this happening TO me?” he asks himself “Why is this happening FOR me?”... except when it comes to the "unseen dealbreaker"... nobody wants that to happen to them. Kaitlyn reminisces with Derek about her time on DWTS, that damn Cruella wig and her first born child, her mirrorball. Derek confesses one of his most embarrassing on-stage moments and that his girlfriend has turned him into a Bachelor superfan with a very impressive limo entrance that could go wrong very quickly. Kaitlyn wraps up the interview with a fun game of “Which Judge Said It?” where Derek has to guess the memorable judge comment from DWTS and Derek’s impersonations do not disappoint! Okay, let's talk about the original enemies to lovers story.
Before all of our reality TV couples, before the rom-coms, we binge,
there was Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy in pride and prejudice.
And Audible has just dropped a brand new original that will have you completely hooked, I am.
It's not just any audiobook.
This is a full cast performance.
So Marisa Abella, you might know her from industry,
brings Elizabeth Bennett to life.
And Harris Dickinson from Baby Girl and Where the Crawdads Sing is Mr. Darcy.
And honestly, the chemistry, you guys, it's everything.
Plus, you've got icons like Glenn Close, Bill Nye and Will Polter in the mix.
Talk about a dream cast.
Now, what I love is how Marissa pulls you right into Lizzie's world, her stubbornness, her wit, her messy family dynamics,
and of course, her complicated feelings for Darcy, and with a vibrant new adaptation and
original score by Grammy-nominated composer, it just feels so fresh and modern while still keeping
that timeless Jane Austen charm.
So whether it's your first time experiencing Pride and Prejudice or you've read it a million times, you're going to fall absolutely in love all over again.
So go listen to Pride and Prejudice now at audible.ca slash Jane Austen.

Anyways
It's that time of the year
at Vinos
Dancing with the Stars
is back
Next week
And I'm so excited to watch
I'm like
I'm kind of watching it
With FOMO
Being like
I'm gonna do that again
But also
No I don't
That was a lot of work
It was really hard
but I'll be watching it this time from a couch mirror ball in hand, glass of wine and the other.
And what a better way to kick off this season than having the six time champ, almost eight, according to him.
And one of the judges on my season, Mr. Dare Cuff on the pod, we talk about his residency in Vegas, his upcoming season of being a judge on dancing with the stars, whether he prefers to be a judge or a dancer, everything he's got going on, all about his TikToks.
It was just so good to chat with him before he heads off to judge.
so I hope you all enjoy this episode.
And I wish all of these new contestants,
the best of luck this season.
Break a leg, not a rib, like I did.
Oh, my gosh, you're lighting right now.
What's up? How are you?
Are you in front of natural light or ringlight?
That is good.
Natural light.
I'm a big sliding doors here, right?
And this is the spot.
the light. But I also have, I also have a ringline here too. Oh, okay. You're just doubling it up.
By the way, you know what's funny? I never, ever, ever, ever watched the show for years.
And we'd have Bachelor and Bachelor arts on the show, dance and stars. And then when I was on NBC on
World Advance, not part of the ABC family anymore, my girlfriend, she got me watching it.
And now I am like super hooked on like the whole thing. We watch every week. We're like,
it's like so. And so I was like, oh, I get it.
Like, this is so much fun to watch.
I know.
That's why if people tell me that they've never watched, I'm like, if you start, that's
it, you're in.
Like, it's one of those shows that you can't stop watching.
Yeah, it's a blast.
It's a lot of fun.
So, and what's the funniest part about it is that, you know, you go to all these, like,
Hollywood parties and, you know, all these things.
And you see, like, Brad Pitt or you see, you know, all these crazy movie stars.
But you're like, oh, that's cool.
And then you see somebody from The Bachelor, like, oh, my gosh, it's so and so.
Oh, my goodness.
I can't believe it's so funny.
It just cracks you up, man.
When I was a bachelor and came off the media tour,
or I was doing the media tour, it was so funny.
I actually met you there.
Do you remember that?
I do.
I do remember that.
Yeah.
We were like talking about hockey.
And it was like five years ago, but it was so funny.
And I was like, somebody get Derek to Dittney for a picture.
I've got to get this.
Yeah.
I was doing the media tour.
And I would go into like, you know, where they,
interview everybody and they're like nobody gets more excited than when bachelor people come in for
interviews like we will interview the top celebrities but for some reason it's because bachelor people
like are literally just being themselves on TV like they're not like a character they're just
being them and you like want them to just be those exact same people when you meet them and
you've like gone in this journey with them where they were nobody and they were so like single
and then falling in love and you relate to that I don't know what it is that's what I kind of
realized, too, like, even with myself on Dancing with the Stars, like, I could never, I never
really quite understood. I'd go to these, again, these events, and there'd be, like, these A-less
celebrities there, and I would, people would come out to me, and they'd be like, oh, my gosh,
and I'm such a big fan, and, like, Anthony Hopkins or, like, you know, Oscar winners,
were like, I just love your dance, and I just, and I was always, like, I was so
taken, I was so shocked that, like, first of all, you watch the show, and then, and then
your fan, wow, thank you so much. And I guess what I would watch,
when I started watching The Bachelor, Bachelorette, I got it.
Because I think what you just said it, you kind of hit the nail on the head was, you know,
you're not playing a character.
It's like they feel like they know you, and then they come up soon.
And yeah, it's cool.
But anyway, so yeah, I just wanted to say that because I just, it's just so funny how.
You get it now.
I'm totally into it.
But you know what it's funny.
I would always ask myself, and I'm sure everybody does.
They're always watching, like, what I would be like if I was on that show?
You know what I mean?
Like, how would I react?
How would I act?
And, like, I always say, like, I feel like.
I don't know, like, if I wasn't, like, into somebody, I could not, I would be like, hey, okay, out of these 30 people, it's got to be you for, thank you for, thank you. I don't know.
I was just talking about this to, did you ever watch, I mean, you don't have a lot of time to just watch things, but what is that show?
I did this year. I did this last year. It's a ton of time. What does that show that everybody binge watch? I just had her on my podcast today. Minnie, help me out.
Love is blind. Which one? Love is blind. Oh, right, right, right, right.
I was blind.
I had one of the girls on there, and she asked me the same question.
She was like, how do you, you know, have these 30 men come out of the limo?
And obviously, you have to fake connections with some of them, or at least conversations
or at least like some kind of interest.
And I was like, it's funny because I did know, after all the limo entrances, I was like,
I already know who my top four are.
Like, I already know.
Right.
Also, another thing I always ask, too, and I'm going to watch a little bit, well, by the way,
I love that, like, this has become our conversation right now.
And I'm sure you were like, had all these questions.
And I'm like, no, no, no, no.
Let's talk about that.
That's okay.
Let's do it.
But it was, my question was this.
You're looking like, oh, my gosh, like, that person was so nice, so handsome or beautiful.
And I was like, they probably had bad breath.
I was like, there was something that we can't see as a viewer, but you might experience,
like there's like a pheromone or like something that just, like, switches you off.
You're like, I don't, sorry, like something like that.
That is exactly true.
it's always so unfortunate when it's the like good ones that you're like oh and then they have bad breath you're like no because there's unlimited supply of blistering strips on the show there's really no excuse for you to have bad breath unless you know you're going to be kissing somebody or up close and personal and uh i remember katie saying that exact i'm like what you sit in him home she was like bad breath i was like shoot so but i'm right okay i love it i love it like that's that was i literally say that when i'm watching that they're like oh my gosh no
I'm like, no, they had my breath.
They have to ask me something.
Because for me, that's like, for me is like an absolute.
Oh, my gosh.
Deal breaker.
It's an absolute deal breaker.
Yeah.
So anyways, all right.
I just had to like get that up like this.
Hey, any more questions before we get to you?
No, I'm all good.
I was good.
I asked people this a lot on my podcast if they watch the show.
What would your limo entrance be if you were a contestant?
Oh, my gosh.
I certainly, I don't know if I would have one.
I don't know if I would have a big thing because what would I do?
I don't know.
I mean, everyone would expect you to dance, but I feel like you'd have to do something different because people would expect you to dance.
Yeah, I might like parachute in.
I might just be like, hey, look up.
And all of a sudden, I'm just like, hello.
And I land.
You know, that's ideal.
I'd probably end up in a tree.
And I'm like, hey, great to be here.
Which would make better TV if that happened.
but that would be a smooth entrance if you were able to really nail that that would be that's a good one actually
can you do that at nighttime probably not uh yeah sure you can okay sure or maybe not actually it's a good question
I feel like if someone's going to do it it would be you like I feel like you have this bucket list that people
would never dream of and you're like check check check check check check you just get to do it something
outrageous something outrageous like are you just an energizer buddy or do you really shut it off and sleep
Oh, no, I shut it off.
Yeah, for sure.
I'm, uh, and it's actually interesting in the past,
I was in the past couple of years.
I found it really hard to go to sleep.
Yeah, pretty much my whole life, honestly.
Uh, just like left with your thoughts, the whole thing,
just like laying in bed for three hours, like, how do I go to sleep?
But just like learning and, and for me, actually,
it was when I started going on tour, you know, I was like,
I have to go to bed and you'll be on a tour bus, you know,
your little, this little coffin, you know, cubby,
which I actually love, I actually love.
It was like this dark, pitch black, freezing cold, but I just would learn these breathing techniques and listen to sort of meditations and listen to things.
And it was game changer.
So I really learned to, like, switch it off and just practiced it.
And so, yeah, so I can now.
And it's really, really helpful.
That's nice because that's, I mean, I did the same thing.
I used to be actually, and I've always been an incredible sleeper until recently.
And I've now taken up meditation.
Like that helps me fall asleep every single night now.
I used to watch TV and now I either read or meditate and I, it's just changed everything.
I mean, I'm also a wine drinker, which helps, but really wine just has sugar in it and wakes
me up at like 6 a.m. anyways, so probably not the best.
Also, too, being in a, being in a relationship actually, too, for me, honestly, like being,
having just like that, there's like this groundedness and like, let's go to bed and yeah,
like it's just there's an absolute sleep. That's a sleep remedy in and of itself.
So I agree. That's, I've learned that just from.
you know, being away filming is, I'm like, why am I not sleeping as well as I used to? And then Jason
came to visit for like a week with the dogs. And the dogs are like sleeping on my head. They're
not small. Jason's beside me snoring in. I was like, ah. You're just like, okay, all is well,
all is safe. All is good. No, yeah. Yeah, I found that for sure. But yeah, I like to pack as much in
as I can, you know, during the day and just, but, you know, but the whole quarantine, that was definitely
a great lesson for me as far as I'm definitely definitely an overachiever so um in moments where I was
like oh you know what it's okay to go watered plants and now actually I like I love it I love just
going to watering the plants and pulling the weeds and just doing yard work and I love that so I'm
actually it's kind of weird going back into like you know this fall this winter coming up is going
to like I just my schedule I was like holy Moses and I'm like where am I going to water my plant
Yeah. I know quarantine kind of brought us all down to that level of just being a little more grounded and being okay with the being still.
All right. My Vino's know I'm all about that self-care life. But one thing that people don't typically think of when it comes to self-care is food. I mean, I usually think of like a face mask or a therapy session, a little warm bath. But one of the best additions to my self-care routine has been adding daily harvest to my life. I've been busy lately.
Pretty busy, yep, and that means a lot less time to grocery shop and cook, so I've been
taking care of myself, given my body, the food and nutrition it needs to thrive by getting
daily harvest delivered straight to my door. Daily harvest delivers delicious harvest bowls,
flatbreads, smoothies, and more, all built on organic fruits and vegetables, and having
these meals and snacks in my freezer just makes it easier to take care of myself on days when
I'm really busy or I'm just craving something delicious. Or if I'm in and out of meetings all day,
I know I have that artichoke and spinach flatbread just ready to go for lunch.
And in the mornings, you know you wake up and you need something ASAP.
I just make a little delicious smoothie to get my day started.
It really could be just more convenient.
Literally takes minutes to prep.

But yeah, your schedule coming up.
I mean, when do you start?
Are you already doing Vegas?
Not yet, but we're about to rehearse.
I go to Vegas this Monday to start doing all of the teching and the lighting
and dancing with all the dancers, rehearsals.
And it starts, so my first show is September 22nd.
Yeah, at the Venetian Resort Hotel, and then the premiere of Dancing with Stars is September 20th.
Oh, wow.
And you're doing both at the same time.
How, wait, how are you going to do this?
Tell me how.
Easy.
It's, it's, it's five, I do five shows a week in Vegas.
Okay.
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Then I film Monday for Dancing the Stars, and my Tuesdays will be off.
So that's all good.
However, you know, I'm planning on doing some performances on Dancing with the Stars.
and there's some other things coming up.
And so it's a, that's going to be a lot for sure to try to figure out new routines, new concepts.
But for me, it's not that bad.
In the past, I danced with, when I danced with Nostia Luchin, I did 13 shows a week at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
Like one, three, which means that there are some days that I did three shows a day.
So on a Sunday, you know, we do three shows a day.
And by the way, I'm teaching and.
coaching Noste Oluken for Dancing with the Stars.
And it's during that week, in between shows or in the mornings.
And then Sunday night, I would finish, I would take an ice, do an ice bath.
I would actually usually get an IV just to hydrate.
And then I get the Red Eye flight land Monday morning day of the show.
No camera block, nothing.
And then we would dance.
And then I'd get the Red Eye back out Monday night.
Oh, my.
And they would all over again.
So that, after doing that, I was like,
You can do anything.
Five shows, week, Vegas, easy.
Well, I mean, that does sound easy after what you just said.
I don't know if you know this, but I got to host and sing in a show on Broadway like three years ago.
And it was so cool.
It was a Christmas, like, holiday show that they just did for eight weeks on Broadway.
And I got to host it and sing in it, even though I'm always saying, I'm pretty sure they turned off my mic, which is fine.
And I did eight shows a week.
And then we had one day off and I would fly to Canada for that one day off because I was the host of the after show of Bachelor Canada.
And that to me was next level exhausting.
And I wasn't even like moving my body like you guys do as dancers because going on dancing with the stars was 10 times harder than what I was doing then.
Like dancing is intense.
It's intense.
And it's not just the actual dancing itself.
It's just the mental and emotional strain that,
but it's because it's, you know, at least in your position, you're learning something new,
something different, there's the unknown, you know, there's so many different variables.
And then, of course, as a pro, you know, you feel the full weight of the responsibility of, like,
it's up to me to make sure that we're ready.
And so there's all that fear there as well.
So it's physically exhausting, but I would say way more mentally and emotionally,
which is why it's so important to sort of like, you know, learn.
just to enjoy the process.
So, but congratulations, by the way, Champ.
Oh, champ.
Thanks.
You didn't call me that forever now if you'd like.
Let's go, champ.
Listen, it's, it's, it's, for, I just saw Donnie Osmond, um, in Vegas, uh, you know,
before, because he, his show is opening up soon.
Um, and, uh, he busted out his old bareball trophy and it's all falling apart.
Oh, yeah.
Busted out.
And he goes, Derek, this is my prize possession.
He's like, this is, this is, this is.
No. And I was like, I know people don't really realize. He goes, no, no, no, no, no. You don't understand. I've done a lot of things in my life. That was the single most difficult thing I have ever done in my life. And that mirrorball trophy is my prize possession. And I want everybody to know about it. And I was like, damn right, Donnie. Let's go.
You know what? I believe that because that, it truly, I look at it almost every day. I thought, I'm like, how do I can't pack it? I can't bring it with me. And I'm like, Jason, we send me a picture of my mirrorball.
just because when I'm down, I'm like, I did that.
Just to remind me, yeah.
And also, how many mirror balls do you have again?
Is it like six or something?
Six, yes, yeah.
I mean, that's nutty.
That is nutty.
Almost eight. Almost eight.
What do you mean? Almost eight?
Well, I came second twice.
I came second with Sean Johnson.
Yes.
And that was like, I felt like that was, we had,
that was like a pivotal season for me as far as just like,
just in general as a human being but um we came second and we you know we did create the whole season
and then i won back to back with uh kelly thickler and um amber riley and then the following season
right after that i came second with amy purdy who was the paralympian and so yeah that was a
those four seasons in a row were pretty like second first first second it was uh it was a pretty
amazing pretty amazing four seasons wow yeah that's that's incredible actually i was like
how do you jump from sick to almost eight but that makes sense i've actually become pretty good
friends with sean johnson from being in nashville and amy purdy because she came on my podcast
and we just like bonded over that we did a live podcast together they're such good people but yeah
it is i just johnny osman he was one of my first um i went to i've always been obsessed with
musicals like i grew up my mom was um a singer and dancer she taught me dance and then i grew up
loving musicals and being in musicals and so i saw joseph in the amazing technical or dream co
And when I was like, I don't know, eight years old and I still have the mug from it.
That's like one of my prize possessions.
It's funny.
A picture popped up somehow.
I don't know why, but like it was of Donnie in that.
And he's full like shirtless and got the long hair.
Oh, it's amazing.
Just legend.
Just the legend, brother.
He is an absolute legend.
Wait, is Haley dancing in your show?
Because I saw her trying some crazy like Vegas outfits.
Is you dancing it?
Yes.
Yeah.
So she's going to be dancing with me in the show, and we've been rehearsing together.
And she's, you know, it's funny because, like, she hasn't danced like a ton the past couple of years.
And we were dancing together.
And I literally just, like, stop as like, babe, I forgot how unbelievable you are.
Like, you are extraordinary.
She has the most incredible facility.
Her, like, legs, her arch and her foot.
I do remember that.
I was like, I really fell in love.
with the arch of her foot and her legs.
Dancers do that.
That's, yeah.
Amazing.
But just, just, like, beautiful and just the way she moves
and then actually dancing with her the way it feels.
And so I'm not only excited just to share this experience with her,
but I'm just really excited to see, to have people see her dance at, you know,
at such a high level.
We're going to be going, you know, shows intense.
And so I'm, I'm excited.
And she looks incredible.
And this costume that you saw on Melrose is.
You don't.
You don't.
You don't.
On Melrose, there's a store, and I walked past it.
I was like, these costumes are outrageous.
They're ridiculous in the most amazing way.
And this is the guy who does J-Lo stuff, Katie Perry, Gaga, all that.
Each outfit's worth like $30,000, something insane.
And he was a fan.
He said, he's like, hey, I'll just, if you want something, let me know.
And so I was like, we're going to figure it out.
We're going to work this in the show somehow because it's so Vegas.
And so we'll figure it out.
We'll figure it out.
Yeah, I can only imagine your Vegas show is, like, what I think of is, like, a Moulon Rouge style, like, in your face, very Vegas, like the costumes just next level.
I feel like, because what is the title of the show, Limitless?
No limit.
No limit.
No limit.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I feel like that's such a you thing to do.
And I'm like, wait, wait, how long are you doing it for?
From September 22nd to November 21st is right now.
and you know possible for extensions and stuff but uh but that's that's booked right now that's incredible
and just i need to go back to haley for a second because i truly like when you guys danced on
the last season of dancing with the stars i was like okay two humans cannot move this way like
what are the chances that there's two people in the world that move like this and they're together
and they get to dance together and i went home and stalked the shit out of all of her videos of her
dancing and i wanted to study every single move and things she did because i was like
that would be my dream like human to dance like is haley she is just like there is no
like everything she was doing i'm like how do you not even wobble like she's just so solid
and smooth and everything she does and she's obviously stunning and i just like i stalked her
that could be my confession i just not your girlfriend for a long time i might have too when we first
I was like, hey.
It's funny, but we actually met, we actually met on tour, dancing, and our first kiss was
on stage.
It was a part of the dance, or was it like, that I got to make out with her?
No, I wasn't part of the dance.
It was, we were dancing in Rumba.
It was dance of love, of course, and it's on video.
So a fan got it.
So we actually have our first kiss on stage, dancing to Ed Shearons, I think it was
a video, thinking out loud, thinking out loud.
And we actually recreated the dance
And like a couple months ago
And put it on YouTube and stuff
So yeah, it was cool
Now I know what I'm doing later
I'm stalking that video
I'll probably like be in the mirror
Trying to dance like it
Like kissing myself like so into it
Oh my gosh
That's amazing
I love that you guys have that moment
To look back on
And that you recreated it
I didn't think I was gonna like
That style of dance
I ended up loving
Yeah it happens a lot too
And it's also on the show
there's things that like you think oh man this like this is going to be really difficult for this person to
learn and then we do it and then actually it's great you know and then you say oh this this one's
going to be easy here we go and then it turns out be really hard and you're like shoot i had this all
backwards i thought i thought i thought i was going to be like so good at the pasadoblet and that was
like my worst worst dance ever but i but i also remember part of the reason of the thing that was
difficult for that one was I think your costume like your hair your head that wig like I really
feel like that was a detriment as far as you're like it was just hard to maneuver in that that's also
what happens too is what people don't realize to you on when they're watching is you're rehearsing
and you're rehearsing in the studio yeah you don't rehearse in these costumes you don't really
have you don't have time we like it's like the day of you're doing a full run-through in costume
just a few hours before the live performance so there's not a lot of time to fix certain
things and uh no i was freaking out about that one the wig really messed with me one i was i pictured
myself being like this like like vixen sexy little like you know villain of prella de ville and i
put on the wig and i'm like oh or like an actual 80 year old grandma okay cool cool like that's
that's what it felt like and i was like oh i don't know it was just the weirdest that that whole
costume thing yeah i couldn't have a smooth transition the whole time like just
you know i i had to have a terrible costume also the breakdancing move that i did in that costume i'm
like everyone was like so 80s and in these spandex and i was in like a jean skirt and dork glasses and
like a flannel shirt i was like okay you know when when when you realize and it took me a while
to realize this too on that show that um i remember like glen when there was a season when i was
a kelly fickler and um you know we did this dance and i was really proud of it i thought it was
really good. And then we did two dances and both dances kind of connected, you know, like one
was a continuation of the first one. And I was like, that was kind of creative. We haven't seen
that in the show before. And anyways, Len and Bruno gives tens. And I'm sorry, sorry,
Marianna and Bruno gave me tens. And Len gave us a six. And I was like, I was like, what?
And I was so mad about it at the moment. And then later on, I realized it's like, oh, that was
like the best thing he could have done for us. So, so it's just got to like,
you got to sort of understand it, but it's hard when you're in the moment.
Everything in life is like that, right?
Like, everything that's hard is always a learning lesson.
And that was the same thing with Dancing with the Stars.
It just lit a fire under my ass every time I, like, didn't do something good enough
or, like, the costume got in the way, or this wasn't my type of dance.
Like, when I came back the second time for the Posidobla, I was like, I'm going to crush it.
Like, I just had this whole other attitude coming in.
So you're right.
It does, it does looking back a lot of good.
Yeah, but also the people, the people rally behind you, too.
If it's a good performance, if it's like, hey, I like that, get you, Len, or free you judges.
Like, I'm going to, I'm going to vote for them even more so.
But also, from a life lesson standpoint, I think there's a great expression that I love using whenever there's something in my life or someone in my life that I'm like, it's like, what if your enemy is your angel, you know?
And basically what that means is that that person or that situation have been put in front of you because there's a part of you that needs to grow and needs to learn something.
And so, for instance, there's somebody who's just like getting on your nerves and you just can't stand being around them.
You know, they're probably that they're an angel to teach you patience and to teach you compassion, you know.
I like that.
So I always look at certain situations and think like, okay, why is this happening right now for me?
you know not to me why is this happening for me and uh what is this here to teach me
what am i here to learn from so gosh it takes a lot of years to get there doesn't it i'm 36
and i feel like i'm just starting to like learn what patience is and like being able to
think that way but that's going to stick with me i like that saying a lot because i don't know
i just i feel like in like a world of entertainment or where everyone's trying to get a little
piece of you you kind of have to have that mentality to get through it and you know be able to
stay saying yourself i guess well especially now when especially with social media and things happening
you know i think it's really easy to get sucked into that and and and for me at least you know
when people start saying having comments and saying things or whatever it is it's like okay like
what is this clearly this is affecting me so what do i need to learn from this and what do i need to
let go of and what do i need to how do i need to be sort of transparent so it doesn't like hit me
it can come through me i can sort of experience it but then i can let it let it go yeah doesn't
wasn't, things still happen.
You kind of wound up in it, but it's always good to sort of come back to that
like mentality of like, okay, why is this happening for me, not to me?
I've told you this before and I'm going to tell you again.
I did throw away that white shirt a couple months ago because I got food all over it.
I was eating dinner, scroll on Instagram, boom, I was a mess.
So was my white shirt.
And I just threw it away.
I just threw it out because I really didn't think it could be saved.
And then months ago, I discovered OxyClean White Revive and I was like, oh, okay, I really
could have saved that. Poor shirt wished I had known about this sooner. But you know what? At least I know
now and now I'm telling you. Oxyclean white revive laundry. Whitener and stain remover has 40% more
whitening power than chlorine bleach per load without all the negatives of chlorine bleach. Pretty
cool. And it revised those dingy whites that none of us love, bringing them back to brilliant and bright,
plus it's safe on colors. It can save those items that you thought were just absolutely ruined and
headed for the trash. And we all know I've been there. It's pretty wild just how effective this product is.
it really works right before your eyes like magic but it's real life they really are experts so
if you are like me and you want something that makes your life easier when it comes to cleaning
your whites you have to check it out it's a game changer work your magic with oxyclean white
revive laundry whitener and stain remover and save while you're at it visit oxycleancoupons.com
now where a coupon is waiting for you I thought about that with you know I had the whole thing
with Carrie Ann and I felt honestly I felt like that was worse on her because of people on the
internet and how awful they got with her judging me and I was like this is part of it you guys like
I always respected what she said to me and so I mean it was for it must be hard as a judge
because you want to give honest criticism and feedback and constructive in a way where
it might come off as you're being a little hard on them but you mean so well at the end of the
day. Have you liked your experience as a judge or do you prefer being on the dance floor?
Oh, no, I love, listen, I love being a judge. It's way easier. You're a really good judge.
It's so, thank you. I try, I try to get, I try to be as helpful if I can, you know, and my only,
my only issue is like, I genuinely wish that I could have like an hour, you know, like, hey,
I have all these, like, things I really want to help you with and some things that I think
that can really transform, you know, performance for the next week. And, and I try not
dwell too much on and sometimes I do obviously because it's live and sometimes things it's just
so fast pace that you don't get out what you need to say but what always used to bother me a little bit
when I used to be judged was especially on Dance with Stars was that they would talk about sort of
that week which is fine you have to get to judge that performance but if you're going to give
some tips don't give some tips on the dance you just dance give me some tips that I can work on
for the next dance yes you did it.
that very well. We always, Ardham and I talked about that a lot in the next week. We're like,
okay, what did Derek say? Because you always gave advice for what we could, what we need to do
moving forward. Forward because what always bothered me was to be like, next time you do the
job, you're like, I'm probably not going to do the job again. Like, why are you? Like,
I know, I don't know. It's not to say that I probably, I might not have done that, you know,
or something like that. But at least for me, I try not to, I try to think about what they can work on
the next week. But it is hard to get it out in a very short amount of time. And,
you literally have this like clock picking down and and you're just like I have so many things to say and help I want to help but um you know try to get it out but it's great and I think that when you said about being sometimes being hard on certain people I think that when people are capable you know for me in class when I was when my teacher would be like on me when they would be like Derek you do you do this maybe on this I would look around I was like I feel like I'm doing this better than some of the people in here why are you picking on me right and later on
in life, I realized it's like, oh, they just saw a lot of potential in me. And they gave me that
time. They gave me that push because they knew I could. And I think that that's, that's sort
of at least what I see on the show. And even what happens with us when we do that was so people
who are super capable of a lot of potential were, you know, there's a little bit more of
expectation there. I did take that as like a form of flattery at a lot of times because I knew I
came from a dance background so not anywhere near ballroom but i knew that i was already going to like
i wanted people to be a little bit harder on me because i wanted to be able to learn and grow from it
and do better next time and having you guys as the judges and ardom as a partner like each week i
i was like this is getting harder and harder but also because i want it more and more and now
looking back i used to tell ardom i used to be like you're so mean to me and now i'm like thank you
for pushing me because you knew I could.
If you were just on me like that, I needed it, and I wouldn't have won otherwise.
Well, and that's the thing, too, is if every week was, and that's what I learned in the past,
it was like, if every week is just, they're good and triumphant and, you know, it's harder
for people to relate to that necessarily.
We need those peaks and valleys.
You know, we need that light and shade.
We need those things.
And I think it's better for the whole experience overall.
It doesn't feel like it in the moment sometimes for sure.
Never does, but it's always hindsight.
It's always hindsight.
Yeah, always. That's the benefit of hindsight. Yeah. And you're going back, obviously, for another season, which everyone is so excited about. I think people really enjoyed to see your perspective as a judge because you've been in our situation, kind of the same way where hosting for me is different than just hosting. It's more of like mentoring and being able to say, I've been in your shoes and I know what this feels like. And I think that just elevates that experience to a whole new level of you being a judge. So it's really cool to have you there as a judge. I know they've only announced a couple.
people but I know that Matt James from last season of The Bachelor is on but I don't know who's
announced it I saw it on us weekly but right so you don't know if it's for sure but I saw
I saw something like that too I I also was like oh that's awesome because I mean you know for
a fact Jojo and what was who's the Olympic I just know JoJo Sunni Lee from the Olympics yeah
and Jojo is going to be paired with a woman and I watch your GMA interview
where people, you know, this is obviously a first for dancing with the stars,
but in the ballroom world, there's actually, where is it?
In London, did you say that?
That's actually a common thing.
Very common.
Yeah, very common.
Yeah.
So it's a, and what's interesting for me, at least growing up in Utah and like, you know,
not being in sort of certain cultures and certain environments, when I moved to England
when I was a young kid, 12 years old, I would go to these bottom competitions and, you know,
we would dance and then there would be like, all right, now the all girls competition.
It was a very common thing every single week.
And there was a whole culture.
And I think part of it could have been, I don't know the exact history, so don't like hold me to the fire for this one.
But it's, I think it was partly, there wasn't enough boys to partner.
But I also think it goes even further back beyond that, that it just became carved into culture.
And it was awesome.
It's great.
It's great to see.
And I think it's interesting now, too, is that even in the dance studio, we don't, you know, usually it's like, all right, the man part, the female part.
and now we don't even say that we just say like all right the leader follower right because honestly
it ebbs and flows too i mean there's there's there's some misconception i feel like that it's like
the man is a leader and then that's it's it's like no no no no no there's it goes back and forth
through a good dance and that's the duty of of the two people dancing together yeah and even now
like when we're practicing i'm like like hey i need you to lead me here or or she goes i need you to
lead me here and I need to have this this intention this energy and so I'm excited because it's
just going to give us a different something different and something exciting to look forward to
and she's a great dancer uh she has a background but you know as we know that that doesn't always
that doesn't necessarily always mean right something a hold on two seconds two seconds my dog is
Luna my dog was just digging up a big old hole and I'm just seeing it's just getting muddy
You, like, knew that you were, like, busy, and he was like, now's my chance.
This girl, I know.
And my other dog, we had to take him to the vet today because he's getting something removed from his stomach.
We had this whole, like, cry moment where we're like, just loving on him and thanking him for everything just in case.
You never know.
And she was howling.
She was howling all day.
Yeah.
Oh, my gosh.
That's dogs are everything.
I have, too, that I'm literally upset.
with so I get that whole thing like I being away from them right now I'm like I'm not okay like I am
unwell being away from the dogs but it's a tough one I've convinced the I've convinced the venetian
hotel to let me have a dog in my room good yes that's good you need that's that's another reason
why I feel like I can like stay grounded when I get home from like a crazy like whirlwind of things
I come home the dogs just like keep me grounded and calm and there's just something about dogs that
I just love.
Oh, they just remind you, they remind you like, hey, it doesn't matter.
They're like, hey, like, whatever you're worried about right now, it doesn't matter.
They're like, food water and love is all you need.
And you're like, you're right.
You're right.
That's it.
Thank you.
But to the core of you all the time.
But yeah, with Jojo, I was like, I'm so excited because she can't, I see her just, you know,
she crushes the TikTok dances.
And I feel like she's got such a good energy.
And that's a good one to have on the show.
I'm really excited to watch her.
Speaking of crushing TikToks, I mean, how the hell?
I think I'm creative and then I watch your videos and I'm like, oh, come on.
Like, how do you, do you come up with these ideas?
Do you guys all just collaborate with other TikTokers?
Like I had Happy Kelly or Kellodactyl on my podcast.
And she was like, she's like, next time you're in L.A., we're doing something.
And I'm like, really?
because it's so cool what you guys come up with
and how people film it
and it's just another level of great TV on there.
I don't know, TikTok for me
was just like an absolute liberation
of just like, oh, I could be a dork on here
and it's like totally cool.
Yeah.
And that's sort of my emotional home,
I feel like is dork.
I think I'm just kind of super young at heart.
But yeah, speaking of Kelly, it's so great
because, like, you know,
I worked with her on Hairspray Live years ago
and she just to see what she's done,
like how she's, she has the whole color look, you know, the multicolor look and
face tracking. And so yeah, for me, I love just reaching out to people saying, hey, let's do
something together. Let's collaborate and get creative with it. But it's, it's been a lot of fun.
It's been a lot of fun. It's a perfect platform for you.
I just really encourage it. It was always funny because people are always like, oh, it's perfect
because there's dancing and this snack. And I'm like, actually, I don't dance on there
a lot, honestly. I just do really dumb things for the most part. But they're always creative.
they're always they some of them most of them are I feel like but I mean I would like to think so but
but they're fun it's I love it it's been great and it's grown like a ton in a year and you know so
can't complain is is it right now I'm like I love it too because I feel like I'm able to be the
same way like dorky quirky like do funny stupid stuff where I'm like and then I get more likes
than on my Instagram and I'm like what the hell like TikTok actually encourages you to grow and
wants you to grow and be more creative.
And I feel like I have to like beg people on Instagram.
Like, you even see my post?
Yeah.
Also, I like the idea that you can repeat yourself too.
Like, it's like, it's not like, you know, you do something.
You're like, all right, that's it forever.
You're like, no, I don't know, I can redo this trend 20 times if I want.
Who cares?
Like, there's no sort of like, you know, etiquette or rule that, you know, it's like,
can you just repeat yourself in different ways, but it's encouraged.
So would you repeat your pelvic?
thrusting dance with Matt you're in the right shirt all day oh you mean like right now I'm just
saying your shirt is the correct shirt to do your pelvis thrusting with with Matt what was that
song um it's my favorite song in the whole world I'm blanking on the song now this is wow you can
really dance oh I'm just kidding oh wait that one too no dreams um Fleetwood math oh yes oh my gosh yes uh
here we go, I can't listen to that song anymore.
Did you know that was my number one song I wanted to dance to on Dancing with the Stars?
I didn't get to do it, yes.
And now all I can see when I listen to that song is you and Matt, pelvic thrusting.
Hey, listen, here's true story.
When I was a kid, before I danced, I played drums, and I was in a Beach Boys tribute band.
And I'd play drums.
I was like eight, nine years old, and we got these Utah County Fairs.
and then every once in a while they'd be like
all right we're gonna do Elvis and I'd get up and sing like
you like no and I'm like doing my hip thrust
and pelvic thrust and my dad was just like
yo there'll be no pelvic thrust in this household young man
and so now I'm like uh jokes on you dad
I do it for a living now so uh
you're like resentful thrusting like that's why it's so good
I'm like I'll show you
I made it dad look at my thrusting
I did it
I felt it through the screen I was like man those
That's mean business with those thrusts.
And by the way, if you want a good workout, no joke, go just start thrusting for a good
minute, 60 seconds.
And if you do it properly, I guarantee you, you're going to break a sweat.
You're going to pull something, you know.
You're going to see me in the gym tomorrow, just like with my headphones in, just pelvic
thrusting in the mirror.
You got to have a dead pan.
I mean, that would be very challenging for me because I find it hilarious, but I will, I will do
But I just laughs.
I am obviously like such good friends with Ariel and then Matt has become a friend just through
her.
And I just think they're the best people in the world and everything you do is just so funny.
And when I saw that, I couldn't stop laughing.
And then you joined in on it and it just went so viral.
And I was like, who would have thought?
You know, that was 2020.
But 2020 brought a lot of weird stuff and that video was one of them.
You know, and we needed it.
We needed it.
We needed some weird.
And that was actually my focus last year was, and it's just, there's so much density and there's a lot going on.
Like, like, you know, if anybody swipes, you know, past my feet in a new way, I wanted them just, like, laugh or just feel a certain way.
And I take myself too seriously.
But also, that's the thing too.
What I really enjoy is that I'm able to be, to be serious, you know, emotional, whatever it might be.
But also, it would be fun and playful and it's okay to have, do it all, you know, so.
I mean, it's better if you can do it all.
That's, that's great.
I feel like I I like to do it all I'm everyone thinks just what they see on like Bachelor and stuff like it was so funny for me to go from Bachelorette to Dancing with the Stars because you didn't watch obviously my season because you weren't addicted to it yet but yeah mine was like a very controversial season and people saw me as like this really like spicy like kind of person and it was like there's this whole sex scandal and it was like this whole weird it was very weird it was it was insane.
I might have to go back and look this up because that sounds fantastic.
Oh, I mean, it was a very fascinating season to say the least.
It was definitely up there for like most controversial.
And I came off it and it was crazy what people would say to me.
Like, if you watch anything, watch my men tell all when Chris Harrison reads.
He reads what people tweeted me that were mean.
And like in the moment I was crying now listening to it, I'm like, oh.
Like it's just shocking.
value crazy. Anyways, to then go to dancing with the stars where one of my friends was like,
did you ever think you'd be blonde and like considered a like sweetheart on TV? And I was like,
no. Because I would never have thought people would see me as like this sweet, sweet heart who is
just like living our dreams. But it's funny how my life has just evolved and everyone's seeing
different phases of it. And then now to be on this end of things like everything is, I don't know,
life is so weird. But I forget where I was even going with this. Well, I think also with what you were
saying. I mean, you're reminiscing is, I feel like
that's the thing as well with, with, I don't know, I think that, I think that people are
up for one, just like getting to see different parts of you and understand it.
And also, sometimes have amnesia to certain things, you know, and they're kind of
with you on the journey in the present moment, which I think is, I think it's important
too. And, you know, I hate when people are, our whole people are guilty for not being
their present self. You know, when they look back at certain things in the past,
they're like, oh, there must just be this type of person. You're like,
you know what are you talking about we're always growing we're always evolving we're always
you know and um so yeah so well i'm glad i'm glad that that it's it's turned out that way
that's what that's nice about social media too is six years ago when i was the bachelorette
instagram was like just starting to be like a bigger thing and snapchat was like the biggest thing
when i came off the season and it was so nice for me to actually have a voice instead of
people just watch me on TV.
Social media is like a nice opportunity to show all different sides of you and,
and, you know, use your...
Have a dialogue.
Have a dialogue.
Yeah.
And it ended up being actually in my favor because I got to like stand up for women
and have this voice of like being empowered and who I was.
And it was, it ended up being amazing.
And that's thanks to social media.
So anyways, it's that time of the podcast where I have to make you confess something to me
because everyone thinks they're going to get out of it if I, if I like leave it
towards the end, and I'm like, nah-uh, you got to tell me something embarrassing.
Oh, man.
It's not that, it's not that important, honestly.
It's just kind of a funny image, to tell you honestly.
Okay, so imagine, like, when you're dancing, people don't know, but are dancing costumes, right?
The guys wear shirts.
Yeah.
They're like, they're onesies, right?
Like, they're like, they're like a onesie, so then they don't come untuck.
Right.
So I was going to a competition and I had to wear one, but it was too short.
So it was like cutting off circulation.
You know what I'm saying?
Yeah.
So I had to go off and I had to cut like a whole, a perfect little hole just in a little onesie outfit.
And it was, you know, I don't know, just have to have an image.
Yeah, you're painting a pretty picture.
I've got it.
Yeah.
The onesie was just, you know.
So that happened.
And then what happened was, then my pants ripped.
no on top of that so things things were exposed but uh yeah it was it was it was
pretty embarrassing but i that's a perfect confession there you go just unity you had to cut
your onesie a hole in the front you split your pants and you were exposed that's exactly
the kind of content i was looking for there it is delivered thank you there it is full of frontal
gosh i picture that happening to people all the time though in that world
Because, I mean, I even remember on, I don't know if it was live, I think it was.
Brandon, like, split his pants in the butt rack.
And it was, I mean, what do you do?
Your live television and the show must go on.
Yeah.
It's, it's, it's, there's actually, there's actually protocol now on guest stars, because it's live.
Where there is somebody who, I'm sure you know, checks.
Yes.
Checks, checks pedals and checks things that are all, you good, you're safe,
you're wearing something in case the dress four to fall or something.
something that happened that and then there's like that's like somebody's job it was the first time
I was going out and they're like you got to get your your costume check before you go in and I was
like oh I think it's pretty good but okay and I go and it was like a top that wouldn't have
even fallen off and they're like you have to have your nipple covers on and I was like what why and
they're like it's live television you just never know I'm like fair enough thank you for that and
yeah it happened it happened a few times in early early seasons and after that it was like
implemented so yeah that's that's not i'm so excited to watch this season um i have one quick game
for you before i let you go i asked my listeners to come up with a few uh fun games for us to play
and this one did not disappoint so kelsey rose she came up with a game of which judge said it
so i'm just going to read you a few quotes from either kary ann len or bruno from the previous
seasons and you have to guess who said it bruno's going to be so easy i know i know
Okay, so first one is, I know, and I want to do it with, like, their mannerisms, but that would give it a way.
But don't. Don't. Do it straight.
Plenty of magic with a little bit of tragic.
Len.
See, it was Bruno.
And if I would have done it as Bruno, then you would have known.
I thought, I thought, I was, okay, I was just because I said that, I was going to go with Bruno, so I would put my mistake.
I know, I know.
Okay, go with your gut on this one.
Okay.
You've got the guns, but not the ammunition.
was that land yes okay that was that all right that's a good one that's a really good one okay um danger danger
the the cyborgs are coming i mean it's got to be that's got to be bruno no it is bruno okay
by the way by the way i'm riding some of these down right now by the way like that's that's a game
i actually want to play this because it with like a friend of mine i'm like all right give me like
what I need to work in.
I need to work something in here.
And so I'll do that game all the time with my fiance.
You got to work it in somehow.
That's funny.
Can I make you say something one time?
I did that to my fiance when he was in corporate America and I made, he had to say,
he had to work discombobulated into one of his sentences.
I love that word.
I love discombobulated.
It's a great word.
I love that word.
It's one of my favorite words.
Okay, work it in this season.
I'll be watching for us.
The mind vocals.
Let the baby making.
begin.
Carianne.
Yeah.
Oh, did you just know that or do you remember her saying that?
Oh, it sounds like something she would say.
Yeah, it sounds like something she would say.
Okay.
Well, this is very, you know I'm the lift place and there was a lot of lifts in there.
Yeah, definitely carry in.
Yeah.
Okay.
You really have to caress the floor with your feet.
You really have to caress the floor with your feet.
Bruno?
Yeah.
Yeah.
oh gosh he's so entertaining maybe maybe that's what i'll do we do it we do it i'll try to do the
impression of it and yeah but you want me to say something that bruno said or no
anyone anyone said oh okay um you flew off that stage like harry potter on a nimbus 2000
is that bruno as well oh that was land oh my gosh wait wait how he he's been like
he flew off that ball like harry potter and i'm i'm terrible i'm i lived in english
for 10 years and I suck at a British accent.
What's wrong with me?
Get on with it, bro.
That's, that's very sad.
I feel like you can do a lot of things.
If a British accent isn't one of them, I'm, that blows my mind a little bit.
Pretty bad.
Almost as bad as that guy's British accent that was on The Bachelor.
I'm just kidding.
I mean, it was better than yours.
I know.
True.
I can't do accents for shit.
So it's, it's funny.
Do you ever watch Grey's Anatomy?
Did you ever watch it?
No.
Okay. I just got into it recently and last night I was watching and I'm like listening to this guy talk and I'm like, does he have an accent? He has a full blown New Zealand accent trying to be American and it's not working for him at all. And I like Googled it. It's really bad. I'm like there's a game. There's a game called utter nonsense. Go check it out. It's pretty fun. It's basically like where you read cards and you also pick a card of like an accent and you have to read it in that accent. I love that. It's pretty fun. It's pretty fun. I do love that. Thank you for.
taking the time today to talk to me. It was
so fun to have you and I'm so
excited for you for everything you have
coming up and Vegas and
judging and I'm sure more things that
will find out soon but you just keep
brushing it and get some sleep while you're on it.
You too. You too. Enjoy filming in New Mexico and I can't wait
to see that next season so it's all good.
Wait, last question. Do you guys still do the no audience
thing this season? Don't know yet. I have no idea.
No idea. By the way,
I know, and you're going to be like,
and you guys read your truck,
he'd be like, sit next to it and be like, oh, yes,
carry on, carry on.
This whole thing, yeah.
It's such a better feeling after going through it,
and then you just watch and be like, oh,
but then you'll still get the,
you'll still get the butterflies before they dance.
I still do.
I'll want to jump out there.
And I was hoping season 30 was going to be an all-star season
for all the winners because I was like,
put me back out there.
I want to die.
I know.
I know.
But I will say, though, from the cast that I've heard this season from the people, it's going to be really, really great.
I'm really excited about it.
So it's going to be good.
That's awesome.
Okay.
Well, so tell us one more time when your show is in Vegas and what hotel and everyone can go get tickets.
