#964. Jeff Arcuri may be able to win over an entire room of strangers, but can he figure out why the guy Kaitlyn is dating refuses to laugh?Jeff is back on Off the Vine to talk about the maki...ng of his Netflix special, Nice to Meet You, the pressure of capturing the magic of a live show, and what makes his crowd work feel so effortless. You're listening to Off the Vine with Caitlin Bristow. Everybody, welcome to Off the Vine. There are very few people. people who can make me laugh out loud while scrolling my phone. I mean it. Not the fake little, like, I mean actual belly laughter. Jeff Arcuri is one of them. I've watched more of this man's crowdwork than I would like to admit. And if you're part of Bachelor Nation, then you probably know him as Katie Thurston's husband, which is how a lot of you were first introduced to him when they
Starting point is 00:01:51 were both on the podcast together. So since then, his life has changed in just about every way possible. He's got a Netflix special that I am making everybody watch. It's the best Netflix special I've ever seen. He's selling out theaters all over the world. He and Katie bought a house. They've also faced some incredibly tough moments together over the last year. So today I got behind all the viral clips of Jeff. Got to know the guy. Everyone keeps sending to their group chats. So everybody welcomed Jeff Arcuri to the pod. It was like so important to me when I was bachelor. I was like, I need somebody that's funny. And so when we made them do standup, it was like, I immediately got the ick for like five of them because I was like, that's not funny. It's wild. Like the biggest,
Starting point is 00:02:30 strongest looking dude put him on stage in a microphone and you're going to see the 8 year old version of him. Yes. It becomes like like, that's something that I always like, I would like be in a room full of tall hunks and I'm like yeah, but I can public
Starting point is 00:02:46 speak better than you guys. No, it's true. It was like the tall hot ones that were funny. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They don't have to be, you know? That's true. We were struggling for attention down here in 5-8. Well then what's my excuse for being so funny? What's the, you have any questions for me?
Starting point is 00:03:01 Oh. I was just going to talk about myself the whole time if you didn't mind. Wait, I do have a question for you. Will you be honest with me? Yeah, of course. Did you hate the magic show I sent you to with Katie? No. You didn't?
Starting point is 00:03:13 No, it was nice. Honestly, anything that's like out of the norm for entertainment for me, like even like, yeah, it was good. It was fun. Okay, so for people at home, I've talked about this magic show like 10 times. I don't know why I'm such a geek over it. I just love magic. And I did it during COVID and it was like,
Starting point is 00:03:30 the exact same show, but over the internet, which was crazy. Because you watched a Zoom magic show? Yeah, I was part of it. I was part of it. He would like call on me to like... The magic show is wild. Because it could... The disconnection and what?
Starting point is 00:03:47 Well, they had different camera angles where you could always see his hands. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And there was this one moment where he like sent a red balloon out the window. and he told one of the people on the Zoom to go open their door and there's a red balloon there. How do you do that? Yeah, I mean, it's just pure magic, you know?
Starting point is 00:04:08 Okay, thank you. I think it's just pure unchristian magic. So the guy that, the guy that told me to invite you guys, he's a big fan of you, and he's going to your show tonight. And I went for drinks with him last night.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Thank God I didn't say that the show sucked. No, he thinks you hated it. He was like, I'm really sorry. Tell Jeff, I'm really sorry. I could tell he didn't like the show. Oh, that sucks. And I was like, wait, really? And he was like, yeah, it's fine. I could tell him people don't like it. And I was like, damn, dude, that's funny. He's a magician in the same way. I'm a comedian where you don't notice if someone's having fun. You notice if they're not. But maybe it was the way I was consuming it was not great. I will say there was one point where I got, I felt like a fool. Because I was getting into it. You know what? We're going to, we had a glass of wine each. Let's have fun. And like, we need a volunteer. and I go, I'll do it, you know? And he goes, I need someone from this side. And I was like, that's fine.
Starting point is 00:05:04 I don't want to do it anyway. I was pouting for like 40 minutes. I was like, that's 100% what it was. He just wanted to be chosen. And then I saw the reason why is, uh. Good looking woman? No, no, no, because there was one trick where he went like this and like a ring flew and landed around somebody's glass.
Starting point is 00:05:22 And that was the volunteer they needed. And I'm like, I think they needed someone to plant that glass really quick. And it needed to be somebody on that side of the, of the, Was it magic? I think it is magic. I was just joking. Jokes are supposed to be funny. I really believe in magic, though.
Starting point is 00:05:37 You do? I mean, I know it's not real, but I like to believe that it's real. You enjoy the illusion, the sleight of hand. It makes me feel like a kid, like that there's still, like, it's like Santa Claus is still real. Like, it makes me feel like a little kid. There's nothing wrong with that. You said something about when it like brings out the eight-year-old child and someone when they get up on stage with a microphone. I feel like you're a little kid out there sometimes and I love it. Your giggle just makes me laugh
Starting point is 00:06:04 every time. Nice. Nice. I just feel like your little giggle. And I said this before we started recording, but I want to say it now. That was truly the best stand-up special I've ever seen online on TV, whatever streaming. It's really good. It's really well done. It's the perfect amount of time. You hit so many different things. I love your crowd work, but I felt like I got to know you a little bit better and hand jobs and all so many things. I was like, wow, I really feel like I know you better now, which was amazing. That's great. That was the goal, you know, was to kind of just showcase myself and be like, look, here's an hour of me and this is what to expect on the road. That's really what I wanted and I was afraid of was I know the shows on the road are fun and I wanted to kind of like
Starting point is 00:06:48 make sure that people saw an hour of that. And they continued. The people kept buying tickets, kept see me live because all I want to do is keep performing live. That's all I care about. I wouldn't have put a special out unless it was something that I thought would, people would appreciate that couldn't see me live. Yeah. And it would be good enough that I'd be like, yeah, look, this is what it's like, you know? Yeah. I was scared to do that. You were? Yeah, because, you know, if I, if eight out of ten shows are amazing and I'm like, hell yeah, you guys, I wish you guys saw this show, you were, you're afraid that every one of your recorded shows is going to be the two out of it, the ten, you know? And then you're going to be like, shit, what do I do? I didn't
Starting point is 00:07:24 get that magical crowd. But it was like we got lucky. The second show we filmed was like perfect. Okay. So you filmed how many to get the one? Well, truthfully, we filmed, we used two shows.
Starting point is 00:07:39 Okay. To combine to make that one. 90% of it was the second show we ever reported. And then we sold five shows. So we just did them and recorded them. And they're like, we can just, because the way it kind of works is like Netflix gives you a fee. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:53 To rent your special. And then you have to pay for it and produce it yourself. That's why it says like executive producer, me, not Netflix, because they don't pay for it. Got it. Which is good. I, some people complain about that. And I'm like, look what Comedy Central did to comedians. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:06 They were like, yeah, let's give you half hours. And then they give you a flat rate of like $8,000. And then they keep it. And then you can never have it ever again. People have lost some of the best specials to Comedy Central, to the media conglomerate. Because they agreed to it in 2010. And now they just will never have that special ever. Oh, crazy.
Starting point is 00:08:24 YouTube or anything. So you own like everything. I'll own it in two years. It's Netflix. They're leasing it for two years basically. And then I get it back if I want to put it on YouTube later on or something like that. Or they can sign it again. Be like, hey, let's do another five years, seven years, whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:08:37 So it's kind of cool. Like basically we sold the shows out with the hopes of like, yes, well, we'll all record them all. But mostly I just want to make the money back. Yeah, of course. I don't want to lose money on this, you know. I feel like it's such a like honor, of course, to have a nice. Netflix special. And I feel like, again, I love comedy.
Starting point is 00:08:59 And so I've always watched the specials. But this one was, I don't know. What do you think made it different? Why do I feel like it's different? Different than other stand-up specials? Yeah. You know, I think the incorporation of crowdwork is something that a lot, it's riskier on specials.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Yes. I did kind of riff and improviseal. Like, I was like, there's a few times that I, when I went back and watched it, where I'm like, what the fuck? I've never said that before. Really? Yeah, yeah, there's a few things that I said out loud that I did jokes that I never didn't plan on doing, but he kept in the cut.
Starting point is 00:09:31 I'm like, I'm glad you did. There's certain things that I messed up or whatever that he kept in. And then when I, even in editing it, I'm like, that's weird. I don't normally do that. Should we, can we take that out? And he's like, I'm going to be, I'm going to be honest. Man, it's a human moment. I think we should keep it. And I'm like, all right, great. Like, we really didn't cut much. That's a good point. It felt very human. I loved the crowd where I loved that I really felt like I was. was there and it didn't feel so edited. No, yeah, it wasn't.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Yeah. It was, that's all I was running was that hour for the past year with everything where, especially when I was in Europe where I wasn't really like, the crowd interactions were fun, but it was a little more difficult when there was a language barrier involved. So I was really hitting that hour and tightening it up and just kind of like getting the order down and stuff. My, this, I don't know why this is probably my favorite part. Well, no, my favorite part was when the Katie stuff, but when you were talking to
Starting point is 00:10:24 You're like, I love you. Dave. Was it Dave? And then you're like, say it back. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And he didn't say it back. So that was my favorite thing to do. I feel like I kind of can't do it now. I still do it naturally, but I love finding somebody that's just like, all right, let's see what this guy's got in the beginning and then making them my best friend by the end. I like finding a guy that doesn't look like he did enjoy me and then making it the show about him and I is banter. And I do that, try and do that with every show. I find some guy, a grumpy gust looking guy. Yeah. And then by the end, he's like in it. And he's like, yeah. and we high five, whatever it is. That was that guy for that. And he ended up being, he was perfect for it.
Starting point is 00:10:58 You see how much more he engaged he got by the end of it where he's like, I did that today. Like he was, as opposed to the beginning where you go, like what am I getting myself into? Yeah. Which was cringy for me at first when I watched the edit. I forgot, I forgot the recording. I saw it months later. So I didn't remember any of it, really, honestly. And when that special started that way, I was like, why am I starting with like picking on some guy?
Starting point is 00:11:22 And then I was like the ending of it. I was like, that's why we kept it in. It works. Okay, yeah. It was perfect. I loved every second of it. And are they usually that amount of time, specials? Anywhere from like 45 to an hour.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Oh, okay. Yeah. I just, it was good because I wanted more after it. I feel like that's a good. That's huge. That's like the biggest compliment is like it was so quick. And the truth is it wasn't. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:42 A lot of comics specials are, they hover. Yeah. Below that, like around 45, 50, 50 minutes. And this was like, I was glad it came out to like exactly one hour. I was like, oh. And then Katie had a little camera. At the end. That was so funny. That's a good joke too. That was from, because I did a Q&A at the end of the shows.
Starting point is 00:11:59 Even if we didn't use the show, I wanted everyone. It was like, hey, thank you for coming. Any questions? And that show that we used, somebody asked me, what's the gayest thing you ever done? And I was like, I don't know, what's, give me over to hotel key? Whatever I said, something dumb. And then later on, we brought Katie out. I was like, you have any questions for Katie? And then I was like, what's the gayest thing you ever done?
Starting point is 00:12:17 And that's when she said you. And it flows without even knowing the context. It was great. It was perfect. But she just nailed it. That's happened so many times on the road. There's been like one time where we tried to recreate an ad-lib moment. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:30 And we couldn't because we're not great actors. So we both were like, what the heck was that supposed to me? It was so cringy. So I'm like, never again. It's got to be natural. And so what's happened on the road sometimes. I have footage I still haven't looked at of me calling Katie or FaceTiming or asking something. Like, did I do this?
Starting point is 00:12:46 And she's like, yes. And like the audience losing it. Yeah, yeah. It's fun. It is so fun. I like that's when I always. Like, I always have comedians on my podcast because I find you guys so fascinating, but also I could only dream of doing that.
Starting point is 00:13:00 I just don't. I don't think I could do the crowd work part. And if you want to do comedy, that should not even be your focus for the first time. Really? Absolutely. You need to get, like, the reps in and then do, like, let's getting used to the silence and not like, you know, the way I do crowd work, I think is different than the mass amount of crowdwork.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Yeah. I'm not just kind of saying, what do you do? Who are you? Are you together? I'm bringing my life out into the open for you to relate to. So I could say something like, I have a dog. Do you have a dog? You know, I had a crap. Anybody's have a crappy day today?
Starting point is 00:13:34 Anybody think going on? That's interesting because we can all kind of like commiserate and things like that. Yeah. So I think like if you ever want to start comedy, you got to go through the grind, you got to do the open mics. No, I can. I do. I do.
Starting point is 00:13:45 2 p.m. daytime open mics with college students, all that stuff. Yeah. Now, who's your favorite kind of crowd? like college students, older people, like, who are the people that you're like, this is, these are my people. And I'm not just saying this. Genuinely, my crowds are so awesome. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Because there are people I would hang out with. Yeah, I, but how do you find that? Just because luck. You know what it is? I think it's the fact that I'm not leaning one way or the other. Like some would say, like, Nikki Glazer is more of a girl's girl, you know? So that's her audience. Some would say, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:21 certain comics might have like Shane might have more of a guy audience right the show and not the default either of them but they have their niche they have their type of comedy I mine is very it's pretty broad but it's also disarming enough that I don't think any husband is gonna be like I'm not gonna go see that guy well you gotta you gotta crush on this punk you know there's no the girls go to Matt rife yeah yeah yeah yeah you should see me great when Katie brings up no account tickets I'm like is it because it's just his
Starting point is 00:14:50 music right like that's the vibe is I don't think I present as a threat to either party. So they can both go, yeah, let's go enjoy this gay little clown, you know? There's nothing wrong with it. Yeah. I don't want to spoil the special, but all the gay jokes like that, the way you deliver it, disarming is a really great word for you. Thanks.
Starting point is 00:15:12 Yeah, that's a really great word. That's how I felt the whole time. I just, I felt like, I know you kind of, but I was like, I just want to be friends with him. Nice. I try and just be empathetic. I just try and think of like, what would I be, what would I want if I was, if the roles were reversed, you know, I know this guy's just trying to set me up, make fun of me or something. So I don't, I wouldn't, like, I wouldn't want to do this to somebody. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:34 I want to reverse the roles and go, how can I make him want to talk louder and be part of the show? Because you really do have that gift of people just telling you their deepest, darkest secrets or like anything that, because I feel like that is, you are disarming. You do make people feel comfortable. And they're laughing. Like, you bring them in. into the joke instead of them being the joke. Cool. Thanks. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:55 I do. I really think that. Are you a perfectionist? Yeah. In a weird way. It's funny. Somebody asked me that. And I think I was hanging out with my parents and Katie. Yeah. And I remember somebody asked me of a perfectionist. And my mom and Katie both like at the same time.
Starting point is 00:16:11 Oh, yeah? As if I'm not, you know? Because like whatever. But I am in certain ways like with my editing. Like I'll edit my videos and stuff. You edit your own? Yeah. Like any clips that are not from Netflix right now
Starting point is 00:16:22 are the ones I've edited myself. And I go in there into the micro edits and the cuts and stuff and I get very particular. Like even every tour poster, I'm like, can we zoom in like point five a little bit more here? And I just, I've realized that it's because I care and I don't want to be the guy that doesn't, you know? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:39 I think we all have friends that you ever see somebody try poorly just because they can then say, well, it's because I didn't try. It's one of my, okay, you know in your special, you talk about the moment that you're like, like you walked down the street and you go, and it's like from years ago. That was an old bit that I only rift on that one show.
Starting point is 00:16:57 Really? And I just completely forgot about that bit. And I haven't used it in my act in so long. And then it just ended up being on the special. I'm like, that came out great. Like, that's great. It was because I feel like everybody's had that moment too.
Starting point is 00:17:07 That's one of my moments is when I got to, I had a dance scholarship from, and I moved from Edmonton to Vancouver. And I was always like, the best in my class. And back home and I went to Vancouver. And I was with all. all these people who were so much better than me. And so I didn't try.
Starting point is 00:17:24 And I went across the floor and everybody's watching and I gave up halfway through and I was like, I'm not going to get. I didn't even try. And I did that. And it's one of my moments I look back at it. And because the lady who ran the studio pulled me aside and she goes, that was really disappointing. And I was like, oh.
Starting point is 00:17:40 And she was like, you're so good. Like, why would you? And I, it's one of those moments I think all the time. I'm like, why didn't I even try? It's because you're afraid that if you try your hardest and you don't succeed, it's because you weren't good enough. Yeah. And as opposed to, if you just give it half that,
Starting point is 00:17:54 it's because you could have gotten it, but you didn't try this time. So you leave yourself that room for passing the blame to something else. Yeah, I think we all do that maybe. I used to do that. And then I remember just thinking like, if this doesn't succeed, like me starting to make clips and doing social media,
Starting point is 00:18:10 it's because I didn't try hard enough. I didn't plan it well enough. Yeah. And so I wanted to remove that. When did you start kind of like growing your audience online? Because you've gotten so big online. Thanks. Yeah, August, 2022. Oh, wow. Exactly. The 18th of August, I think it was my first ever post. Your first ever post was in 22. Yeah, I had an Instagram, but I didn't have Facebook, didn't have YouTube, like any of that stuff. And I had like 8,000 followers on Instagram just from doing comedy. And yeah, I just decided to start getting my clips from the seller. I like requested them, got them, was learning to edit because it was very easy. The clips they send were just, one.
Starting point is 00:18:49 one camera, one audio track, very easy to edit. And it took me like 16 hours to make my first one. I've been bleeding it right away and then reposting it because I spelled some things wrong. Like it was a whole mess. But it took me forever. And I just started, my plan was, don't just post when you get something and be like, is this good? All right.
Starting point is 00:19:07 I'll see you next time. I have one. Yeah. I wanted to bank a bunch. So at the beginning of August, I just started making and learning and make clips and I banked like eight. And I was like, I want to start posting every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And I put it on my thing, like a channel.
Starting point is 00:19:19 I'll have new clips every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and just kind of treat it like a business. And it kind of is that way still. I don't really post personal stuff. That's where if you ever want to see that stuff, that's got to follow my wife's accounts. Yeah. Because she'll post me getting scared shitless in our house.
Starting point is 00:19:32 That was hilarious. Yeah, that was crazy. That was crazy that I woke up. And I was like, she's like, I posted it. I'm like, great. The next day I'm getting messages about it. And I'm like, oh, it's a million views of me going, uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And it happens a lot. There's so many videos where, like, she does that in the house. but I genuinely like I would be upset if the world saw it where I'd be like stop it Like when you were the now Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:20:00 I make some noises that would upset my father Yeah yeah But it's so funny There's there's something to me about people falling And people getting scared When I see those online The faces they make or like the way they react But what if you like punched her in the face
Starting point is 00:20:16 Because that's what happened to me at a haunted house one time, I was going through a haunted house and a guy came out at me and I just, my reaction punched him in the face. Wow, that's your, that's your instincts, huh? I guess so. Just defense, like, just to go like that. Have you ever punched somebody in the face before? No.
Starting point is 00:20:32 Whoa. That's in your bones. I didn't even know it. That's in there somewhere. I just, but I was proud of myself. That's good. Good for you. Instead, you went.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Well, I, I'll be honest. When I get scared, my first instinct isn't an alpha one. Oh. My first instinct is retraction. Everything goes inside of itself. As soon as I get scared, I pull, I protect my boobs. I go like this. There's no part of me that, that postures outwardly and goes, let me protect my family.
Starting point is 00:21:01 My first thought is self-preservation. Yeah, that's fair. I guess I'm just more of a man than you. I guess is what we're getting at. Okay, you know, it's funny. I think one of the biggest reasons people skip working out isn't because they don't want to. I actually think it's because getting yourself to the gym can feel like a whole production. That's what I think.
Starting point is 00:21:21 I've realized that it's never actually the workout I don't want to do. It's everything that comes before it. So by the time you've changed, you've driven there, figured out what you're even supposed to do. It's easy to say, oh, okay, let's just do it tomorrow. Honestly, I've had those days. And this is why I love tonal. It gives you the convenience of an entire gym and the guidance of a personal trainer all in one sleek system right at home. Honestly, it takes so much of the mental work out of full.
Starting point is 00:21:46 working out. I love it. One of my favorite parts of it, too, is that it tells you exactly what weight you should be lifting after a quick assessment, and then it automatically adjusts as you get stronger. It even gives you real-time coaching on your form so you're not standing there wondering if you're doing the exercises right. It's such a brilliant machine. Plus, there are so many different workouts to choose from. There's strength training, arrow hit, yoga, mobility. It never gets boring. Starting point is 00:22:29 I wear it way more than I probably should. That's exactly what happened with my pack of hoodie. It's become the one I automatically grab, whether I'm heading to the airport, walking the dogs, running errands, or just hanging at home. The first thing you notice, just how ridiculously soft it is, It's made from alpaca fiber, so it's softer than cashmere, it's warmer than wool, somehow still very breathable. I just never feel either too hot or too cold in it, which is, I don't know, some sort of magic. And unlike so many hoodies I've owned, it actually keeps its shape. It really doesn't stretch out or pill or get that worn out look after a few washes.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Also, I love that it's made with sustainability in mind and built to last. So you can tell it's just one of those pieces that's meant to stay in your closet for years and years, not just one season. Honestly, I wear mine all the time. If you're looking for a hoodie upgrade, I really think you'll love this one too. Couldn't recommend it more. To grab your pack of hoodie, go to www.paccaapparel.com. That's www. p-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-courl.com.
Starting point is 00:23:31 You also have a sneaky good singing voice. No, I don't. Zoom in on that face. When you were doing the bass, the Billy the bass, the bass, your voice was good. Thanks. I don't know. I never really, I did choir as a kid and shit. So I learned the Dori me Fasolati doi Lati Lollahso Vamiradoes and stuff, but I never, you know. You're kind of a natural. I appreciate that. Thank you. I do it for my wife all the time to the point of annoying her. I sing around the house. You do? Yeah, yeah. I picture you doing like a
Starting point is 00:24:06 creed like, home and now. A hundred percent. Stop, really? I'm free from here. I knew it. I'm thinking, thinker, thinker. Not the reword. Yeah, I was just singing Creed around that. It's so fun because you get to bring, you just bring your jar out here. Because you can be like, hold me now. Yeah, no. It's normal, but hold me now. And they did seem like that.
Starting point is 00:24:33 That's like the 90s, classic 90s voice. Yeah, I guess it was that. And like, what was the other band that did that? Pearl Jam? Was it Pearl Jam? No. Pearl Jam was like, yeah, Jeremy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Yeah. Yeah. I do all those voices. I think that's a guy's way of Trying to sing. If you do a voice and hit the note properly, no one can be like, you have,
Starting point is 00:24:55 come on, stop singing. That sounds like ass. Because you're like, I'm singing it bad. Yeah, on purpose. I'm doing a funny version of this.
Starting point is 00:25:03 My trainer at home in Nashville, he always sings like that and he's a good singer. Ah, so it's a protection thing. It is a protection thing. Why are we all the same? We are just all the same people all the time. Um, when you were in, I can't remember if I talked.
Starting point is 00:25:18 When you were here with Katie, I can't remember if I asked you this. But were you always into comedy, like as a kid growing up? Yeah. Always. I always love stand-up. Uh, probably since I was like 12. Yeah, I was always watching it. I'm kind of getting a flashback of you talking about this.
Starting point is 00:25:31 But who is your favorite comedian? Um, I mean, you know what I would say who got me definitely to fall in love with it was Brian Regan. Okay. I don't know. Um, it's okay. He's, uh, um, amazing comic. Just kind of in like an OG.
Starting point is 00:25:46 in terms of like, had a lot of albums in the 2000s that were like, in my opinion, iconic, very clean. Yeah. Yeah, I remember you. Very observational all about like childhood talking about like playing right field as a kid. Like things that I related to that were clean. I didn't even realize it and registered as clean comedy. Right. But then I remember that just, I had his CD stuck in my, or tape, an actual cassette tape stuck in my car.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Yeah. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee 94. Nice. And it was stuck in my car. for months because my friend lent it to me and then it wouldn't come out. So I would just always listen to it. Yeah. And then it was like graduated from there to like
Starting point is 00:26:24 Dane Cook when he popped off. I was like I was the ripe age for that. And then Louis C.K. is like the next one that I would like watch with my dad. I'd watch like clean comedy with my mom and then my dad would come in my room and watch like Louis C.K. Yeah. Oh shit. Yeah. He's like the shock value. Yeah. Yeah. We weren't allowed
Starting point is 00:26:42 to laugh at that. That's what was I loved about comedy was that there was different variations of it. I was able to watch, do my favorite thing with my mom or with my dad. I was able to choose a comedian to fit that. And I would, I would obsess over it. I would, like, the jokes they would come up with, I would recite them. Like, there's a comedian that has a joke, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I'd do that to get them to laugh at like the, like, I was obsessed with doing that. And it was, I knew it was something I wanted to do where I loved. Yeah. Because nobody else that I'd be like, do blah, blah, blah. And they'd be like, okay. And they didn't care. And I'm like, why don't you care? This is the coolest thing in
Starting point is 00:27:15 the world. You knew it was a passion. It's so crazy. I could say eight words. I can construct eight words and then make somebody's body react to that. Yeah. That's so cool. I do. I love making people laugh. I like just like, I like entertaining I always have since I was little. And being a comedian is such a, like, cool form of entertainment, making, just making people giggle and feel good. Yeah, it's a, you get it, it's so transactional in like, in a good and bad way where comedians, get that validation instantly. Yeah. If something is good or bad.
Starting point is 00:27:50 Okay. So the guy that I'm dating, he doesn't laugh. Like, it's, of all people that I could end up with, I end up with, because my, my girlfriend was laughing and she's like, you would end up with somebody who doesn't laugh because I need to feel validated by humor and someone thinking I'm funny. Like, I would rather someone think I'm funny than like, beautiful. Wait a second. He doesn't laugh.
Starting point is 00:28:10 That's not, he just doesn't laugh. You've never, you've heard him laugh. Yes. But he is just not a. Once in a blue moon, like I said something the other night and it wasn't even that funny. And he laughed and I was like, you aren't actually laughing. He goes, no, that was real. But I'll say something hilarious and he'll go, huh.
Starting point is 00:28:25 And I'm like, that was really funny. And he'll go, oh, I know. In my head, I'm thinking like, she's so funny. That's hilarious. And he goes, but I just don't outwardly laugh. Okay. He would be a, I would love to see. I, okay, so I will say, this does say more maybe about your comedy at home.
Starting point is 00:28:44 because this sounds like a really good boyfriend that's like I'm so funny No no you are I just I don't laugh as a human being on earth It's not you it's just this part of me is broken This is a guy who likes you a lot He just doesn't find you funny So then he makes you think he's defective over just being like Right
Starting point is 00:29:09 No I would believe you if I didn't ask his family about this problem Okay, have you, has he, what are his favorite comedy movies? You know, or like, has he seen Jackass? Maybe Jackass Forever, Jackass 3. I don't think he's, like, I asked him the other day if he's seen Titanic and he said no. Well, I know, Titanic is one of the better comedies, but I'm thinking. I'm just saying everybody's seen Titanic. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:34 Movies. You what the fuck? I'm just picturing, we're going to walk, you're going to be like, this is him right now. We're going to walk in a room and it's just going to be like a real doll. He doesn't do much, but he works when I meet him. He doesn't laugh and doesn't watch movies. Have you seen that? What do you guys do together?
Starting point is 00:29:53 On TLC, they have like My Strange Addictions and people really do fall in love with those dolls. What do we do? We play a lot of like card games. Okay. We go on a lot of walks and like love dinners. Great. Are you dating a 95-year-old man? Kind of.
Starting point is 00:30:11 I don't like movies. I don't like laughing. I like long. walks early dinners and a nice game of rumma cub and a nice warm black smell before man he let's play one game of scrabble before it gets dark what are you doing the laughing thing is so funny i think that you know he might have a different sense of does he listen to podcasts yeah like rich roll rich roll yeah never gonna no no he's like never gonna Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:30:47 Is that guy's any Rich Roll? I thought Rich Roll. Rick Roll. Rick Ashley's his name, but it's Rick Rowling is when you... Some rapper, Rich. Jelly Roll? No, Jelly Roll's not a rapper. He listens to a rapper's podcast?
Starting point is 00:30:59 No. Help me out. Who's Rich Roll, Wolf? You don't? Dick Wolf? Oh, he's like, I feel like he's like an inspirational... Oh, is he like 5 a.m. Water.
Starting point is 00:31:10 He runs marathons. I think that's all we need to know. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. There's the, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. You know? It's a fit guy, right?
Starting point is 00:31:18 Got a shit together. But it's funny because so we watched, I would like to know your honest thoughts on this. We watched the roast of, what's that short guy? Kevin Hart. Yeah. We watched the roast of Kevin Hart. Did you watch that? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:33 I found it so cringe because they have people who aren't funny going out. They're trying to be a comedian like Tom Brady. Yes. You know, that's just like with anything, not every. part of the play or the drama is going to be tear jerking. It's this and that. It's throwing things at a wall. None of that can really be rehearsed. So
Starting point is 00:31:51 yeah, I don't know. I think that was one of the better, more fun to watch roast that I've seen. Just because I was excited to see what would happen next. Yeah. But keeping my way, I also watched it while doing other things. Yeah. That's not maybe, you know. I also
Starting point is 00:32:07 have you ever gotten chat GPT to roast you? Never. Oh, I've heard that you can keep pushing it to do it harder and harder? I did. Oh, God. Wait, to roast me? Yes, but it's actually...
Starting point is 00:32:21 What the hell? I took a train to get here. Why would you do that? That's so nice. No, it's a nice roast. I was laughing because I... Oh, nice. Okay, cool. I literally said, like, make it unhinged. And I was like, wait,
Starting point is 00:32:35 some of this is really nice. Okay, so one said, Jeff looks like every brewery's employee of the month for the last six years. Hey, that's not. I like that. I would be too If I worked out of a brewery I'd be the guy that's going
Starting point is 00:32:48 Everything okay here? Okay And I don't even have to do that I just do that See? Okay You have the face of a guy who says No worries man after someone totals your car That's funny That's okay cool
Starting point is 00:33:01 Yeah these roast are like nice wait it gets cuter You have the energy of someone Who's always thinking about getting into woodworking I always am though Really? I always joked it if I didn't do comedy I'd really love to work in a shop with sawdust. I don't know anything about wood.
Starting point is 00:33:19 That's the downside is that I really, it would be a lot of like, how do I do it though? Like I'd have the equipment. Yeah. That's me. I buy all the equipment to do a new hobby. Like, I have a drone that I still, I turned it on and my dog barked and I'll figure it out later.
Starting point is 00:33:33 And that was a year ago. It's just sitting on my counter. I do that too. I bought my dogs an ozone therapy machine where you literally stick a catheter up their butt and give them ozone therapy. And it's supposed to help Like, was that the same thing that I said?
Starting point is 00:33:46 What the fuck? I bought a drone and then you brought a dog anima kit. Yeah, but it's the same thing where I was like, I'm going to use this all the time. It's so good for their health. And then I'm like, I've never heard this. It's a dog animal thing? Hoses of catheters in my apartment now. Wow. When people come over, they probably think I'm, well, I am strange, but it kind of.
Starting point is 00:34:11 That's interesting. What kind of dog? You're golden, right? Yeah. Is it the anal gland expression? No, it's literally ozone. It's just like putting oxygen in their body and it helps. Yo, I would hate to be a new age dog.
Starting point is 00:34:25 You know? Just be like, all we had to do was sit, lay down, chase the ball, and now it's, that was end of the time today. Yeah, and I get the macupuncture. Do you really? Yeah. Wow, I've been giving my dogs more vitamins than me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:37 My wife mixes in this frozen stuff with the food. I'm like, wow. Dogs, there's theories. Dogs are going to live. have passed into their 20s in the next like a few decades because we're like coming out with new technology to...
Starting point is 00:34:51 There's apparently a pill coming out that makes your dog last longer. Elderly dogs last a lot like yeah live a lot longer. It never come out by the time like soon because I got a 10 year old golden and I need that I can't even talk about it.
Starting point is 00:35:03 I know. Speaking of goldens, one of the roast said if golden retrievers became a human they'd look exactly like you. Yeah, Katie said that she goes every time I post Charlie people say you guys look alike. And I was like, you don't need to tell me everything from the internet.
Starting point is 00:35:18 Well, the internet called me a slut yesterday for clenching my butt cheeks and making cellulite. When did you do that? Like, just, I was like a bit on social media. Yeah, I was, it was the, there's like a viral sound that's going around that says, before you judge me, keep in mind, you're probably a piece of shit too. And I was just doing that and I was in a bathing suit because I was at the beach. And then I get, whenever I'm like trying to feel sexy, I have to make it funny at the end of this.
Starting point is 00:35:41 Then I'm like, oh, I don't look like you're going to do it to be sexy. Yeah, yeah. And so I clenched my butt cheeks and a woman was like, I don't think you're a piece of shit, but I do think you're a slut. And I was like, oh, my God. One person said that. Yeah. Isn't that funny? Well, it was my favorite because then I pinned it so that everyone could just do it for me.
Starting point is 00:35:58 That's, I've seen that happen before. And I always, it's always the same thought process. I go, why would they put this? Oh. And then I just like watch all the comments get thousands of likes where that guy's sitting at three likes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:10 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Yeah. 100% yeah I never I'll be honest I never like went to children's photos and did that but I did do like there's been times where my wife's got nasty comments on something that like you know affected her yeah and I was like I'll be right back and then I'm like it's time for dawn like a person I had a fake account no profile picture I'm in the bathroom going you you need a shit how dare you say about such as an angel isn't that funny to that it's like a little bit satisfying when you get there is there's a good like I said there's a catharsis you feel from going, I hope that you read this and get that same slight shoulder drop that we felt when you wrote that, because that is, it is psychotic to me that there are nurses and bus drivers and teachers that will go like, they'll just go, yeah, fuck. Yeah. Okay, hey guys, how you doing? And you're like, you're just a real human being in real life. Yeah. But you get this little masturbatory
Starting point is 00:37:11 and then put your phone down feeling that's so creepy to me I never comment on things and if I do it's positive or if it's AI videos of like a sick golden and they're like please just 10 likes and we can save him
Starting point is 00:37:24 and then it's like all these AI like where they're like please just donate it's always a PayPal link and I got to the point where I almost started sharing the story like these people are scammers invade their page right now
Starting point is 00:37:35 well that's do you worry about your parents with scammers because I can like tell when something is a scam And then I see my mom just falling for every Facebook thing on planet Earth. My mom and dad both are like, obviously, the boomers love the Facebook. Yeah, they do because the AI stuff especially is really affecting it. My mom is still falling for it. My dad, I think that this was his last straw.
Starting point is 00:37:57 I think he was just like, I'm not doing the internet anymore. Yeah. Now there's a trap out there for me. I'm not doing it. Like I showed him, this AI. And he's like, duh. I don't want to do the internet anymore. It's, I get it.
Starting point is 00:38:09 I feel like, I'm in my 70s, there's going to be a thing. And I'm going to go, I had enough of the new stuff. Don't you already get freaked out for that in like the next five years? Look how fast AI has like changed the world in like three years? Yeah, yeah, three, five years. Yeah. And where we're going to be in 10 years from now?
Starting point is 00:38:29 Do you get scared? Did you do intrusive thoughts like I do? Or, nah? I don't. I'll be honest. I don't really. I know this sounds, this is going to sound stupid. And probably problematic.
Starting point is 00:38:39 but I don't worry about the earth. I don't worry about humanity. You don't. As much as people do. Okay. I think that like, I don't know, every day I have, it's like I have so much to worry about personally. Totally.
Starting point is 00:38:56 That I just, I'm able to think, God, just remove the, why do I also need to think about global warming? Why do I also? This is so, it's such a dumb way to live is to this thing, but I'm not worried about AI. I do believe humanity will prevail. I don't think we're getting like, I think it's a lot of this stuff is just a lot of,
Starting point is 00:39:16 you know, people regurgitating fear mongering and being like, no, me, AI's taking over. I'm like, okay, yeah, you really do believe that in 2029 you're going to be shooting assault rifles at walking robots. Well, no, not that. Oh, what is it?
Starting point is 00:39:29 Well, there's going to be infrastructure. Yes, there is going to be growing pains and change. And that's scary, but we're going to prevail. It's humans. That makes me, you just made me feel so much better. Good. Yeah, because I freak out about that. Have you ever watched Paradise on Hulu?
Starting point is 00:39:43 No. Do it. What kind of show is it? First of all, it's, people think it's a little sci-fi, but it's man-made. I don't think it's sci-fi, but I get what they're saying. It's hard to explain. But it's basically about, well, I don't want to say it because it kind of gives it away right off the bat. Okay.
Starting point is 00:40:01 But the president dies at the beginning. They're trying to figure out who killed him. And then you realize there's something so much bigger than that happened. in their world. Paradise. And I can like any time I hear the music, because it's the song. Parra. No.
Starting point is 00:40:19 That's what my brain is a paradise. My brain is trying to do that right now. But it's the other, it's the older one like do, do, do, do do do. Oh, yeah, that's a good song. Yeah, yeah. Great song. And they incorporate that song into every episode and I get goosebumps when I hear it now. Okay, cool.
Starting point is 00:40:36 It's not Duran Duran. Not the sequels. What is it? I don't know that. It's funny. I'll give it a shot. We're looking for new shows. Oh, watch it. I'm going for a dinner with your wife tonight. Oh, nice. I know. I'm very excited. We're going with her producer.
Starting point is 00:40:52 Why don't I want to call him Bennett? It's Bradford. Her producer from the show Bradford. And as you probably know, they've had like such an interesting like up and down relationship because we all feel that way after we come out of that show. Yeah, yeah. But we're all going to go kumbaya at dinner tonight. Nice. And I was sad because my friend who put you guys up at the magic show, he's going to your show. And he was like, do you want to come? And I was like, I have to choose between his wife. That's hilarious. Choose wife. True wife. I'm going to do wife.
Starting point is 00:41:22 And then, yeah, I don't even know what show he's coming to, but we'll figure it after if you guys are out or something. Yeah. I have a few unbopping around town. Okay. I want to come see you do, because like you obviously you don't do the same standup that you do for the Netflix. No, it's all brand new material from here on out. I started writing again. In January, right after the special, I started a new, and I'm like, I'm about halfway to my new full hour with like new material, but then what I'm doing as material I didn't use in the special. I'm kind of reworking because a lot of it was like a dating stuff.
Starting point is 00:41:52 Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I met Katie, and then that's why most of my special is about her. Right. But then she's like, you got to do this one joke. I loved that one joke. So I'm just kind of bringing it back with the past tense. Yeah. I'm just saying this is why I'm happily married.
Starting point is 00:42:04 I was shitty at dating. Hear the story. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm able to jump into it now. But it's all. if you haven't seen me or if you've seen in the past couple years this is all brand new from that cool and all the showcase shows at the seller and stuff yeah only doing 12 to 15 minutes so it's all brand new for sure okay you guys have heard we talk about neutral for years i always laugh because
Starting point is 00:42:25 some brands come and go but this is one of those that's just never left my routine genuinely take it every single day because healthy hair doesn't happen overnight that's for sure i've learned that consistency really does make a difference so i think especially in the summer, my hair is almost never down. It's in a pony, messy bun, sleep bun, braid. I'm outside. I'm traveling. I'm sweating. I don't want to be worrying about whether my hair looks thin or unhealthy. I just want to throw it up and go. And that is one of the reasons I've loved having neutral fall as part of my routine because my hair just feels healthier and stronger, and I just have more confidence in it. I also love that neutral fall is not a one size fits all.

I spend so much time talking myself into buying random things, but when it comes to where I sleep every single night,
Starting point is 00:44:03 that is a non-negotiable for me. I have Bull and Branch on my bed in Nashville, and when I moved into my apartment in New York, it was one of the very first things I ordered. Same sheets, same comforter, same duvet cover, not even a question. I recently turned into a hot sleeper. This is new. I feel like in the last year, especially in the summer, I used to think I just needed to blast the AC, but it turns out a lot of it was bedding.
Starting point is 00:44:26 Bull and branches' sheets are made from 100% organic cotton that's woven for airflow, so they actually feel breathable instead of trapping in heat. and then somehow they just get softer every time I wash them. There is honestly nothing better than crawling into my bed at the end of the day. The sheets feel cool when you first get in. They're unbelievably soft. I just sleep so much more comfortably. And I genuinely use Bowlen Branch and honestly cannot imagine going back to regular bedding like ever.
Starting point is 00:44:51 So sleep cooler this summer with Bowling Branch. You can get 15% off your first order plus free shipping at boll and branch.com slash Vine 20 with code Vine 20. That's Bolandbranch, B-O-L-L-A-N-D-B-B-B-N-D-B-B-Ranch.com. slash Vine 20, Code Vine 20 to unlock 15% off. Bowlenbrush.com slash Vine 20, Code Vine 20 exclusions apply. I do want to talk about Katie for a second. Sure.
Starting point is 00:45:18 Because obviously last time you're here, you and Katie just gotten married, I feel like, which is crazy because I feel like that all happened so fast. And now in the special you were talking about how you guys did the IVF. Where are you guys at in that process right now? We have embryos. So you have two, right? Two embryos? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:36 And then are you just kind of waiting? because you just bought a new house. We got a house that's renovating. Yeah. You know, it's hit a lot of hiccups. So we're that our house supposed to be renovated in maybe four months was our initial projection. Now it's 18 months.
Starting point is 00:45:50 So we're like, okay, we're going to do this for a while. And I don't know. I kind of want to have a home for my baby before a baby for my home. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'd rather start right, like start with the rooms that we want, the way we want to start our family. And I know, like, I've talked to people that have gone through IV. women in comedy that have gone through and had children since and they're like just do it you're
Starting point is 00:46:13 never going to be like I know now you know yeah but I go yeah but I literally we don't have a home like yeah it's one thing if we were like all right this is going to be we have a great apartment now we live in a hectic area I could not plan I could not do that to my wife traveling right now right so I'm just I think we're gonna once we get the home down pat and we have a secure sanctuary But you're in Brooklyn right now, right? No, we're in lower Manhattan. Oh, okay, okay. Oh, yes, I knew that.
Starting point is 00:46:41 Which I love, you know, she loves this. She's learning to love the city. Yeah. But I just love, like I would have walked here if I left earlier. I'm probably going to walk home from here. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's, you know, an hour and a half walk. Just because I love walking through the city.
Starting point is 00:46:54 I think, like, it's just so great. But she wants that, like, she wants to be able to go on a walk with her dog and not have to, excuse me, excuse me, excuse me. I thrive on that. I love, I joke that I'm like, I'm a perfect size the city. I fit everywhere. I'm sliding between people. I'm under. I'm such a fast walker and I'm always
Starting point is 00:47:13 just dodging and finding the gaps while I walk in the street and I like find it like it's a game. The other day I looked at my o'erring and it was like 20,000 steps. I'm like, holy shit. It's great. It is great. Anytime I have extended stays at home off the road, I lose like seven pounds. Yeah. What's your favorite part about New York? Walkability. Yeah. It's the thing I hate most about America.
Starting point is 00:47:35 that's probably a rough take too but anytime I go on the road I'll be like oh I'm gonna do Toledo Ohio or you know Omaha Nebraska you land at a hotel and then you look at your window and it's just highway highway highway
Starting point is 00:47:49 McDonald's Starbucks mall maybe and I have to like run across Ohio almost died in the middle of nowhere so many times because I was crossing a street legally and a car almost just hit me because they're like we're not used to people walking here right nobody walks here you're not from here are you
Starting point is 00:48:03 so I love walking everywhere I love the I love that I can hear seven different languages in one day. I know. Like, there's just every, New York, you can discover the city every day. You walk a different route home. I'll just take a different route home today just to see some streets I haven't seen before. Yeah, I do the same thing. I always walk back from the podcast and I do the same, I take a different route every time.
Starting point is 00:48:23 Yeah. And I just, at first I was like, I just loved to like Nashville, quiet, driving. But now I'm like, wait, am I obsessed with walking around New York City? walking around the city. It's how I write. It's how I think. It's how I process. Like, Katie will tell you, if there's ever a time that I get flustered, if I whatever, I walk my dog. I'll leave my phone at home a lot and just stroll and get lost-ish and just like experience the city. I just love how alive it feels. But there are times where I'm like, too alive. Die a little, you know? And so that's where I'm like, okay with meeting halfway in Brooklyn where we can walk.
Starting point is 00:49:03 we can sit on our porch and have a cup of coffee quietly. Yes. But it was funny. I was like, it is nice here. And I was, because I have to go there and mow the lawn every week. And I was sitting there.
Starting point is 00:49:12 I'm like, it is nice here. And right in front of our house, a guy, like almost re-ended a guy and they were screaming, like crawling out of each other's windows, screaming every profanity at each other. And I was sitting on my porch going,
Starting point is 00:49:25 still New York though. Yeah. It's grass on my lawn, but there's still New York. Yeah. Like, I needed that, you guys. Yeah, I was recording too.
Starting point is 00:49:32 I was like, Oh, oh. That's funny. Oh, that's like, oh, lawn. That's nice to have a lawn. That's gonna be huge. Yeah. Especially with a dog.
Starting point is 00:49:40 Yeah. That's so, that's one thing I feel really. You have like a patio, right? I do. So we do too. Have you had a... I saw yours because when you guys had the snow,
Starting point is 00:49:47 I saw what yours look like. Yes. Yeah. Ours is, we've been a small patio, but with the heat, have they been, the paws? I can't put them out there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:54 It's too hot. You do weeby pad or something? Um, I did... What is it called? Fresh patch? It's like real grass? Or outside. No, outside.
Starting point is 00:50:02 Oh, great. Yeah, we did that too. Yeah. It gets gross. It gets really gross. And I found that I kept like rolling it up and getting like just like, oh shit. Shit, I got to take out the shit patch right now. Do you know what we do like full masks and rubber gloves up to our like elbows and like gag the whole time just being like, bleh.
Starting point is 00:50:21 Yeah, I feel so bad for him otherwise though. We have a little fake grass thing now. But he just like, it's him like peeing on his own hands on cement. Yeah. Like this. And I'm like, I know, buddy. I'm sorry, you're supposed to be in nature. I know.
Starting point is 00:50:34 I'm feeling really guilty about it. That's like the hardest thing for me for moving here was bringing the dogs and being like, you have to shit on the street now. Like you don't get to go swim in our pool and then have the nice lawn. Like you have to know. I know. That's funny. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:49 Well, my dog's never known any better. That's true. Yeah. See, now I feel worse. Yeah. Because my. Yeah. They went from heaven, you know?
Starting point is 00:50:56 They really did. Shut up. I'm going back. I'm moving home. Did you watch The Bachelor at, by the way? Never. You haven't. Not a single episode.
Starting point is 00:51:04 And you have no interest. I have no. I don't think it'll make me feel better than I currently feel. Yeah, no. I mean, I'm not a guy. I'm not a curious George when it comes to that stuff. Like, if you could, if you're in love with somebody and you could see every time they've ever, like, kissed somebody else or whatever, would you? No.
Starting point is 00:51:24 No. Just because it exists doesn't mean I should. Yeah. No, I wouldn't, I wouldn't want to do that. I don't, yeah, I feel no insecurity about it at all because I won, you know. Yeah. But I just, yeah, I don't know. I think it'd be weirder if I was like, oh, I watched it.
Starting point is 00:51:41 If I was like, I watch it every night before bed from being honest. Like that's. Yeah, that's weird. Yeah, I'm just them that have no desire for it. That's, I would be the same way. But I just saw this guy that I follow on Instagram. He's from Bachelor World and he's dating this new girl. And they were recording her watching and the emotions that she was going through.
Starting point is 00:51:58 because she was like, oh my God, you're being such a dick. Or like, and then she's like, ew, get off of him. That's funny. That is cute. Yeah, maybe we can, people can convince Katie and I to do that. Because I would, I very quickly forget the cameras there with this. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And so I'd probably react pretty joyfully, viscerally, you know.
Starting point is 00:52:20 I actually think it would be really funny content, but maybe just watch, like, like, don't get to the really romantic parts, you know? Okay, didn't even know about those. So I, I, yeah, yeah, yeah. She actually hated everyone. It was, I hosted her season and she didn't like any of them. It was a real problem for all. Really?
Starting point is 00:52:37 Yep. She hated everyone, wasn't attracted to anyone, didn't kiss anyone. I love that. Yep. It was really crazy. You know what? You guys would make a good reality TV couple if you just had your own show. Would you guys ever do that?
Starting point is 00:52:50 I don't know. I told her like, because she's filming like the house prep stuff. Yeah. As despite me being on like doing, doing. comedy and doing all this. I'm not exactly like I don't run to get in front of the camera again. Yeah. You know,
Starting point is 00:53:03 which kind of works out. Not that she does, but she's very good at like being natural in front of a camera like that. Yeah, she is. And I'm always just trying to be funny or around the corner and trying to say something funny like that. So it kind of works out in that way. But I don't think I could ever be like sitting down on the couch every day and be like, all right,
Starting point is 00:53:20 today we're going to Home Depot guy. Like I'm just, I can't do that honestly unless she was like, they're going to Home Depot. and I go, and I'll be like, yep, like, I'll just exist normally, but I don't, I, I, I don't know if I could ever do that. Could you ever do any reality? Like, could you do, like, traitors or Big Brother?
Starting point is 00:53:38 Would you ever be a day or that? Sure. Yeah. Gameify anything and I'll do it. Gameify, yeah. Gameify it, I'll do it. Yeah. That's, I just filmed the show and there's a game aspect to it, like challenges, and I was like,
Starting point is 00:53:48 I loved it. I want to do Taskmaster for that reason. What's that? It's an English show. It's kind of hard to explain, but they have, like, one person have to do, it's kind of like scavenger hunt mixed with puzzles. Yeah. And it's usually like a celebrity that does it.
Starting point is 00:54:02 Yeah. And you might know from home what they need to do to solve it, but they don't. So you watch them kind of figure this thing out. And it's, I love that type of stuff. Yeah. Okay. I just love games in general. And like the traitors to me is, that would be, I think, the best show to be on.
Starting point is 00:54:19 I'm getting Katie into gaming. Into what? I make her do gaming. Whenever we do a bet where it'll be like, you know, if I do this, I do this, You know, she'll be like, I want you to take care. It's funny, whenever we do a gambling thing in our house, like, all right, well, we're going to do, play this quick game of cards, whoever wins, I'll clean the bathroom, you do this.
Starting point is 00:54:38 Yeah. It's always, if she wins, it's always for me to do something that I need to do for myself. Yeah. So she'll be like, that's funny. It's so funny how I'm like, you're tricking me into helping myself where she'll be like, all right, if I, if you win, we can play any video game you want for an hour. But if I win, you have to call your accountant back and take care of these two things. You have to get a colonoscopy.
Starting point is 00:55:00 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'll be like, all right, it's on. I'm like, and then she'll be, yeah. And then I'll win. She'll be like, oh, shoot, you know? And then I end up doing. And then I end up doing the thing that she wants me to do. Why do guys not want to do things to help themselves?
Starting point is 00:55:17 I don't get it. Why do women need to help us so much? Because you won't do it for yourself. We will. It'll just be eventually. It'll be like. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It'll be like, she'll ask me to do something and then I'll take care of it five minutes before we need to leave. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:32 And she'll be like, why now? You know, like, I don't know. I don't know what it is. But I think there's something about women that is like caretakery. Yeah, yeah, yeah, true. That I would never remind her to take care of something that she needs to take care of because she got it. But I've trained her. I've trained her to know that I forget things and I need help. And so I can't ever be mad when she reminds me or makes me feel dumb. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's something because I'm like, I've taught you that I am, you know? Yeah, that's on you.
Starting point is 00:56:01 Yeah, that's on you. Okay, date nights are easy to plan. It's what happens after date night that can start feeling a little predictable. But like obviously you guys have gone through so much life together already with so many things. And like so many big things like buying a house, IVF, her cancer,
Starting point is 00:58:57 journey, your Netflix special, touring around the world. Like, you guys really do like some really big deal thing. Yeah, it was a lot of life in the past two years. A lot of life. Have you been able to slow down? And like, what is life looking like for you guys right now? We, we are both like pretty ambitious. Lifewise, like we're always looking to do, okay, what's next, what's next? She's even more than I am. And we joke that the second we have the light at the end of a tunnel, we're looking to extend the tunnel. Like as soon as we go, all right, well, it's done. Well, we might as well start doing this. Yeah. And I have been the better, I think, about practicing. No, we're not. Oh, okay. Good. And I like, I've, I hate saying this, but like I just like,
Starting point is 00:59:42 I don't want to say put my foot down because we both put our feet down in different ways where we go, this is what we should do. It's a partnership. But there's been times where I said, absolutely not. We're not taking this on right now. Yeah. I will not help you with this because I can't handle it. I know you can't either. And she'll go, you're right. I don't know why we're doing this. Right. But then sometimes she was like, we should take care of this now. We should do this now. And I'm like, no, we don't need to. And she's like, if we're not now, when? And then I'll think about it and be like, you're right. We do need to just do this now. Yeah. So I don't know, I think we just, we're very ambitious with our lives. So we want to keep things going.
Starting point is 01:00:13 Yeah. I think maybe, I think Katie sometimes feels an urgency having a chronic illness that she needs to just keep life going. Yeah. Yeah. So it's kind of like figuring that out. right now, but I do think we have gotten a lot better at learning to relax. And I'll, I kind of have to be in charge of sometimes saying, hey, when we come home today, we're not going to do we shouldn't do anything else today.
Starting point is 01:00:39 And she'll be like, oh yeah, it's fine. I'm like, no, no, no, I mean like, don't even look at your email. It's four o'clock. Yeah. We're fine today. Like, let's just watch a movie and relax. And you're able to do that. She can't stop.
Starting point is 01:00:48 Yeah. If I just take care of this now, because that's the thing I'm in therapy about. It's funny, I'm going through therapy vicariously, like, being like, he's telling me that you're doing this a little bit, but she has, like, she wants control of things. Yeah. And having control of things. And has you always been that way or did that come with her diagnosis?
Starting point is 01:01:06 I think it was amplified, but she's always been somebody, she's always been very organized and in control. And like, I've always loved that about her. Yeah. That very type A. Yeah. And I'm the most type B you're ever going to be. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:19 Same. That's, see, my problem is I feel like me and the person I'm with, we're both so type B. really yeah and he makes fun this guy doesn't laugh yeah he sounds like he would be a type A doesn't he if you were to guess you would have guessed type A yeah yeah yeah that's he's so type B and we're both
Starting point is 01:01:38 and we just don't we get so much done and then nothing done at the same time and it's he always says to me he's like you want so badly to be type A because I I also like control and things being in a certain way and getting things done and but I just I don't even know.
Starting point is 01:01:55 I don't think I've ever made a spreadsheet in my life. Like, I can't control my own schedule. I, like, forget things all the time. I'm just, like, I'm a chaotic person. And I just, I do. I wish I was more type A, but I'm just not. And that's a good thing, I think. I mean, everyone, you just need to know who you are.
Starting point is 01:02:11 People who are type A, type A, are the people that, like, spreadsheets? Yeah. That excites them. I know. If there's a bunch of letters are out, if I put them all in order like this, perfectly aligned, there's a joy. there's an opium or an opioid to them. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:27 When they do that, as opposed to me, I feel no joy when I clean my emails out and check my calendar. I feel nothing at all. I get overwhelmed. And then I'm like, and then I just want to put it away and forget it. Oh, yeah. It's not happening. Oh, if you give me one thing to do or two things, I'll get it done.
Starting point is 01:02:42 You give me four things to do. Yeah. None of them get done. Yeah, I'm the same. If I feel all of it, I do none of it. I'm the exact same. I'm the exact same. And my coping strategy is just sleep.
Starting point is 01:02:51 I go, I'll just sleep. and then I don't have to deal with it and I can like put myself to sleep. Avoidance. Yeah. I'm really good at that. Yeah. And I try and do that with Katie
Starting point is 01:02:58 where she's like having heavy thoughts of stuff like we have results to get back, whatever may be. And I tell my therapist I'm like yeah but I'm really good at like, I'll come home with a new board game or I'll be like, oh, I have this new thing to play on our iPads together, blah, blah. And he goes, okay, that's, you know that works for you. That's what you're copium.
Starting point is 01:03:16 It may not work for her. And I was like, it's working though. He's like, you're projecting what you fixes it for you on to her. And I realize I do it all the time She gets upset And I'm like Do you want to play video games? Yeah
Starting point is 01:03:25 Because that's my cure It's gonna work for you Like when a toddler hands will you a lollipop Does it make you feel better? That's so Oh my gosh Is this your first like year in therapy? Yeah
Starting point is 01:03:36 And do you love it? It's great Yeah isn't it? It's uh it's yeah There's sometimes I do I made a joke about it recently But there sometimes I go in there feeling pretty good Yeah
Starting point is 01:03:47 And then I walk out going I guess I was not You know like where I'm like I think feel like I'm on top of shit and it'll bring some shit up about did you take care of this, you know, have you thought about this with your mom or your dad, whatever? And I'm like, no, I haven't. No, what the hell? I know. Sometimes I just want to quit halfway through because I'm like, oh, God, I don't know if I have the capacity to deal with this right now. Right. But that's me
Starting point is 01:04:07 avoiding. A hundred percent. Which is, then I'll get called out for that. But therapy is, I just, I just think it's, like, it's changed my whole life. And I love when other people are just, I'm like, I'm like, nerding out for you that you're getting into it because I'm like, oh, it's the best. I needed it. It was. there was an emotional dump after the special taping. Really? I didn't realize it. Then I talked to a couple friends of mine who taped, one of which is Jordan Jensen.
Starting point is 01:04:30 Yeah. She has a Netflix special. It came out months before mine. And I messaged her, I think a few weeks into my, like, I would honestly say depression in January. And she was like, just talking to her made me feel better because it made me feel seen. Where I was like, oh, she goes, yeah. No, like, that's what happens. It's like you feel extreme depression.
Starting point is 01:04:51 exhaustion for like two months. Is it because you've just done so much and that's your whole focus and like that's and then you have the big thing and then you're like what now? Yeah, there's a mix of it. There's a lot of build up, a lot of lead up. And then this big thing that occurs, it's now done. Yeah. And you have nowhere to go.
Starting point is 01:05:10 You're restarting. And I think what really hit me was not until we released it. What got me the most was I had no proof that I just did all that for six months. Yeah. I had no proof that I worked my ass off. I'm sure with you guys too, with filming and everything, you do this, you live this whole entire life. And the world has no idea that you're doing it. You're like, what the hell was this for?
Starting point is 01:05:30 Is this really even be good? Right. And then you start feeling it coming out. And you're like, wow, okay, this is just delayed gratification. I didn't get any of this that it should have been trickle fed to me. I'm now getting it all way later. So I wasn't getting the drugs I was supposed to when I taped it and filmed it because I wasn't showing the world right away. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:47 So there was a lot of mixes. And now it's out. It just came out, what, yesterday? Two days ago. Two days ago. Obviously, it's on Netflix, so I don't have to tell anyone where to find it. But then do you do that thing that I do all the time where you conquer a huge goal and then you're just already thinking about what's next?
Starting point is 01:06:05 Are you able to just like soak this in? I'm definitely, what's funny is I kind of already gave up. I already gave up on this hour. I'm done with that. I'm working on the new stuff. But now a lot of my time is spent promoting or talking about that hour. Yeah. So it's like I'm back in the shit of that.
Starting point is 01:06:21 But right now I'm literally just focused on the new material. I'm happy and proud of what I did before and talking about the special. But now I'm just looking forward to my shows I have tonight. So I spend the daytime talking to people about what I did and the night time just talking to people what I want to do. You know? That's cool. Yeah. Well, congratulations on everything that I'm telling you that for everyone watching, if you haven't already, go watch the special.
Starting point is 01:06:45 I was like a geek the whole time. I smiled. I told you, I can't remember if it was on camera or not, but I was like, I cried, I laughed. I was just smiling ear to ear the whole time. And like, L-O-Ling. That's great. That's huge.
Starting point is 01:07:01 I wasn't even, I was never, I was never for sure about it. Katie is the reason why it's out right now is because her like, no, it's so good. Like that and I was like, how much of this is wife and how much of this is real. Yeah. And she's just been, I'll never know. And I never cared to know, but she's just been such a huge support in my corner that I could not have done this without her. The amount of she texts me about just how proud she is of you is so sweet.
Starting point is 01:07:28 It's the best. She's the best. She really is like just one of my, I'll start crying. No. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Favorite people. And I've just always felt like some like bond to her, even from before she even, no, she knew who I was. But before I met her in real life, like just seeing her on Matt Jameses.
Starting point is 01:07:46 And I was like, why do I feel like, like I wanted to be friends with her? She's a real person. Yeah. All the time in every, like, positive or every flaw, which I wouldn't even call flaws. Yeah. It's like, every part of her is just like, it's surreal. Yeah. And I've never, I've never not felt that.
Starting point is 01:08:07 I'd never at any point, don't know, that was fake of her to do. Yeah. And I've had relationships like that. Same. You see them talk to a server in a way. And you're like, what is that? Ew, dude. Not once in my life or in my relationship or knowing Katie, have I ever been embarrassed of her or cringed anything she's done. It's always just been very funny or thoughtful or empathetic.
Starting point is 01:08:26 Real. Yeah. She doesn't have like a performative bone in her body. And it's like, I don't know why that's so hard to come by. But it is. And she's just such a real one. As soon as you brought her up and because I was doing my makeup to podcast with you. And you were talking. And as soon as you said, I'm going to cry again when you were like, and she is kicking cancer's as I was like, I just started crying like while I was doing my mascara and I'm like, damn right she is. That was an interesting thing too because we actually have a documentary that we filmed. We filmed.
Starting point is 01:08:56 Yeah. And I just got the trailer for it. He's putting it together. But he basically followed me leading up to the special. Cool. My Wilbur theater. I did nine shows at the theater where I kind of did a residency there. And then I taped and it was him following us around.
Starting point is 01:09:08 And I didn't know how to bring up the cancer where exactly to put it and how to say it. and how to say it. Right. Until about a week before I taped. Really? And it was me and him in the green room. I had all my papers out. I was figuring it out.
Starting point is 01:09:23 I was like, I don't know what to say. And then we, I put my pen down and I just started talking to him about it. Yeah. And I said that. Yeah. I just want to tell me, we just kidding. And it was like I said the whole thing. And I started crying.
Starting point is 01:09:33 Yeah. And then he started crying. And then he's just, he put the camera down. He's like, say that. Yeah. And that's what came out on the special. Because I, I remember like Katie telling me you were trying to find a way to, you know, obviously talk about her cancer journey in it.
Starting point is 01:09:47 Bring some light to it while also addressing how serious it is. And you did it perfectly. Thank you. It was a tough, tough to do. To go from doing an impression of a fish. Saying, what my wife has been through this. It's a weird TED talk, you know, but it was, it ended up coming out, okay, where I wanted to, I wanted to dip in and then dip out of bringing that up. I wanted people to know about it, but then not forget, but go.
Starting point is 01:10:14 back to just having fun. Well, and showcase Katie's humor and strength during it too. Like it's just, everything about this special was perfect. I'm really just so happy and congratulations and I just want everybody to watch it and tell everybody where they can find you and where you're going to be
Starting point is 01:10:30 on the roads and whatever, you know, you know, do the bit. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Just jeffarcuri.com for tickets and then that was so fast. Yeah, jeffartre .curi.com, A-R-C-U-R-C-R-C-C-C-com slash shows. If you want to get right to the right page. Yeah, just.
Starting point is 01:10:47 And then Netflix, just please give that a watch. Two times per account. That's what the max is. It is? I was believing it running for my dog when I went on to walk. Oh, that's smart. I'll do that. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:57 And I was like, let me leave it up. But then Katie was like, so I read about this. And I think that it's actually two times per account. So if you have somebody watching it, and she's like telling me, she goes, no, we don't have to watch it more than twice. But everyone else, tell them to watch it twice a month. Oh, so watch it twice, please. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:11 To the end, to the end of the credits. Play it once for it. Yes. You've got to see the credits. Play it once for yourself and then once for your dog. That's what I put that in the, I blast an email out saying, guys,
Starting point is 01:11:19 I don't care if you even watch it. Just put it on, put it on for your dog. And my whole team was like, don't say put it on for your, like, be proud of it. I was like,
Starting point is 01:11:28 no, put it on for the dogs. You should be proud of it. Thanks. I honestly am like proud of it for you. So congratulations again. I've said that a million times. So thank you.
