Episode Date: April 26, 2022

It’s time to fangirl with KB because the one and only Malin Akerman is on the pod! She’s starred in so many of our favorite movies and Malin is not holding back today as she talks about h...er first impressions of fellow A-listers, her worst and strangest acting gigs (including one that features a merkin), and what she would relive if she could go back in time. Plus, she’s sharing who she gets starstruck by (stars… they’re just like us!), what Paul Rudd is like behind the scenes (#hallpass), and everything that went into filming her upcoming role for psychological thriller, The Aviary (trust us, you’re going to want to watch this when it comes out Friday). And of course, both Kaitlyn & Malin are sharing confessions; Malin’s hilllllarious confession that takes place in a field somewhere in Canada is one KB can definitely relate to. Starting point is 00:00:00 Okay, let's talk about the original enemies to lovers story. Before all of our reality TV couples, before the rom-coms, we binge, there was Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy in pride and prejudice. And Audible has just dropped a brand new original that will have you completely hooked, I am. It's not just any audiobook. This is a full cast performance. So Marisa Abella, you might know her from industry, brings Elizabeth Bennett to life.
Starting point is 00:00:25 And Harris Dickinson from Baby Girl and Where the Crawdad Sing is Mr. Darcy. And honestly, the chemistry, you guys, it's everything. Plus, you've got icons like Glenn Close, Bill Nye and Will Polter in the mix. Talk about a dream cast. Now, what I love is how Marissa pulls you right into Lizzie's world, her stubbornness, her wit, her messy family dynamics, and of course, her complicated feelings for Darcy. And with a vibrant new adaptation and original score by Grammy-nominated composer, it just feels so fresh and modern while still keeping that timeless Jane Austen charm.

Starting point is 00:02:04 Turn it up. Let's go. Hey, ramen. Pino. Ready for the show. Everyone's welcome. So come on in because OTV is about to begin. Hey.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Okay, everybody. Welcome to Off the Vine. I'm your host, Caitlin Bristow. I am a very giddy fan girl in Caitlin Bristow today. I have got the super sweet, hilarious and beautiful triple threat, one would say, Marlin Orkeman. I really just love it. the way she says her name, so we just edit that in. But anyways, let me, let me try and say it.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Maline Eccamon. Nope, Caitlin, nope, you're butchering it. Okay, never mind. Anyways, she's on the pod today. And to be honest, I have honestly been fan girl in a bit. And you know what? That's okay. She's been in so many of my favorite movies. And it was incredible to sit down with her and have a conversation about her new movie, all of her previous roles. And we try out this new format. So let me know all the feedback for our first, worse and reverse conversation. I just freaking love this woman. And I will have a glass of wine with her one day. Gosh, you look stunning. Thank you. Oh, so do you. I tried really hard today because,
Starting point is 00:03:17 one, because I have you on the podcast. And two, I have to go to a charity event after this. And I have to be like ready to go. And so I've got my heels on the hoop. I love my hair. So I can just like bop out the doors. Well, you look great and you look ready. So that's perfect. I'm so, so ready. Oh my gosh. I'm so excited to talk to you.
Starting point is 00:03:37 I've been a fan of you for so long that when they said you said yes to the podcast, I was like, what? I like put it out there in the universe. Did not think it would come back around a full circle. But here we are. That's so lovely. You are just so incredible. You always seem so funny, humble, nice.
Starting point is 00:03:54 I don't know. I've been really truly a fan of you for a long time. So I'm so grateful that you're on the podcast today. Of course. I'm super excited. People speak highly of you. Have you been doing press all day? Are you like exhausted? Do you know what?
Starting point is 00:04:05 I'm not exhausted. It was we had two hours this morning. I just had a little lunch with my husband. It's all good. You know, it's been a pretty easy day, to be honest. Isn't it nice too for doing like press days now to be in the comfort of your own home and be able to like have lunch with your husband and then go back to work and do it. It's lovely. I'm going to miss it when it's gone.
Starting point is 00:04:24 You know, I will say I do love the excitement of. getting together the whole cast and seeing each other and getting pumped up about it. Yeah. But I do, I'm wearing sweatpants under this beautiful shirt. So, and I'm really enjoying that. Yes. Oh, that's great. I love that you're comfortable.
Starting point is 00:04:39 You're like business on top, party on the bottom. I love it. Well, thank you again. I just started this new thing on my podcast. I was trying to come up with new like segments and keep things fun. And we're doing this thing where we were asking our guests a first, worse, and reverse. So since I love so many of your. movies that you're in. I wanted to start by asking you a couple fun, like first impressions of
Starting point is 00:05:01 some of the people that you've worked with. So you've worked with some incredible people. I mean, you're obviously freaking A-list top up there too. So no wonder you work with these incredible people. But I wanted to know your first impression of Jack Donnelly. Oh, gosh, goofy, flopsy hair dude. You guys have filmed a movie together before, right? Yeah, we've filmed a few movies together now. It's great. The first one we did together was the opening scene was him in a turkey song and I was in an S&M outfit and whipping him on the butt. It was great. Just like it should be in our relationship. I was going to say, if I'm going to plan a movie with my fiance, that's the dream scenario that I would paint the picture for for us too. I would be like,
Starting point is 00:05:50 definitely not doing it with anyone else. So there you go. Exactly. If you're going to be getting whipped by and someone in a turkey thong it's going to be me for sure that's amazing well you guys are so cute together and um you got married in toulom which i'm going there for the first time tomorrow is it just the best place it's beautiful there's so many great spots there just go visit all the different hotels of great restaurants and its own vibe and oh we've got a full itinerary like so one of my friends it's his birthday um his wife is my best friend and so we've got this whole text chain going on. And he's got a full itinerary of all the places that we're going to go. I'm so excited for you. It is beautiful and you'll have a lovely time. It's very cool.
Starting point is 00:06:36 I'm so excited. It feels like it's kind of up my alley because you can have the balance of like being Zen and chill and like healthy and also rage at the same time. Yeah. It's called hashtag range. You get the whole range and it's wonderful. Yes, I love that. Okay. So you got married there. Okay, that's beautiful. And how long have you been married for? We've been married for three years, three and a half years. So we're coming up on four this year. Yeah, December 1st. It'll be four years. Yeah, it's great. It's gone by so quick, which is a good sign, I guess, when you're having fun. That is a good sign. If you told me it went by slow and painful, I'd be worried about you.
Starting point is 00:07:13 What was your first impression of Jennifer Aniston? Surreal. She's, I was so nervous to meet her, and she is exactly what you hope that she is. She is your next-door neighbor. She is your, I mean, and I mean that in a beautiful way because she's not your next-door neighbor. That's impossible. She's way too cool for that. But it's just one of those people that you can, she's so easy to engage with. She's so laid back down to earth.
Starting point is 00:07:43 It feels like I never knew her before. She became an actress and became Jennifer Aniston, but it feels like she hasn't changed. You know, one of those people where you go, you're still the same beautiful, gorgeous person that I bet you were back. in the days where you were waitressing and here you are and you could be anything and you decided you chose to stay humble and she's lovely. That's one of my favorite qualities in anybody is somebody that's gone through so much in their life and they still remain so humble and that's how she comes across and I like to think we're friends because she like responded to me. I know she watched a bachelorette so I was like oh maybe and so I wrote something on her Instagram once
Starting point is 00:08:23 when they were doing before the reunion and I saw her and Ross in the same her and Ross like yeah they were all in the same picture and I said okay but are you and Ross still together and she goes well we're on a break and I was like and we're friends I knew it I knew it this moment was coming to my life definitely you're best friends best friends I'm sure everybody feels that way
Starting point is 00:08:45 when they beat her though just because you know what's so funny is well I was just in Colorado on my first ski trip and we were all sitting around after and we were trying to find a movie to watch and I was like we have to put on wanderlust like it's one of my favorite movies of all time and we were all like in the zone to like giggle and laugh and just like have it on and we were doing a puzzle and watching it and we were dying laughing at and then we went and watched and I didn't even know I was going to be interviewing you at this time it's literally one of my favorite movies and we watched that like bloopers clip oh my god all right when he was doing all those things I mean, how do you get through a movie with somebody that's so funny? Like, that must take so much extra time because you're laughing. Yeah, well, bless Paul Rudd, who is an ultimate professional, because I definitely was not in that moment. And one of those, one of the moments where we're sat on the bed and he's just going,
Starting point is 00:09:40 can I put my, you know, we're dying. I was laughing so hard, the tears were rolling down my face, and he kept going because the camera was on my back. And that day we had Judd Apatow on set and he was helping with some of the reshoots and he kept going, Malin, time is money. Come on, get your shit together. It's so, that's the hard, that was the hardest part.
Starting point is 00:10:03 They were such funny people on that shoot. We had so much, there's so many bloopers. I mean, we could do a whole other film just on the bloopers. It was great. Well, that's one of my favorite things to do in the world is go to YouTube and just watch like bloopers from movies or shows that I love because it's so funny to watch people. not be able to keep a straight face because I'm sure was he ad libid being that like was he just
Starting point is 00:10:23 going off well for sure for sure him doing that and him in the mirror doing it they just you know you you have someone like paul ride you just let him go let me tell you i maybe this is a confession but i that's he is my celebrity crush he has been for as long as i can remember we like are on a mission on this podcast to get him on as a guest because everyone in the world that knows me or follows me knows that like I've just got a thing for Paul Rudd and he's just he's my number one like hall pass is Paul Rudd. He should be he's a good human and very handsome and lovely and I'll put in a good word for you yes okay put in a good word we found his candy store now I don't want to be like super creepy to the point where he's like you're scaring me lady yeah but I want
Starting point is 00:11:13 him to know that I just really want to talk to him okay I'll let him know thanks thanks for putting is the good word. So I am on vacation right now in Mexico, Tulum. It's amazing. And usually I do not look forward to packing. But one thing that makes packing so much easier and more enjoyable is always my away suitcase. I bring it literally everywhere. Away creates thoughtful products starting with the perfect suitcase and now they have a range of essentials to solve real travel problems. Okay. One travel problem mine is overpacking. Guilty. Sometimes I try and fit my closet into a suitcase because I can't help it. I just want options. But away suit. cases come with an interior organization system that includes a built-in compression pad to help
Starting point is 00:11:54 you pack more in and a hidden and removable laundry bag that separates your dirty clothes, which is so convenient. And I also love that they have a TSA-approved combination lock to keep all your belongings safe. And now, Away has a new line of soft-side suitcases with durable, water-resistant nylon exterior made to last a lifetime. They're called the expandables and they're designed to legitimately expand, so you have the flexibility to pack even more into your trip. Starting point is 00:12:30 That's away-travel.com slash vine. Okay, so throughout history, electricity has inspired some pretty incredible inventions like smartphones and those little robot vacuums people name like pets. I've got two of them. Dusted Beaver is one. But of all the great things, nothing compares to the Hyundai Ionic 5, 100% electric AR heads-up display, pixel-inspired light clusters, introducing the first ever Hyundai Ionic 5, your journey at its most evolved.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Extremely limited availability, available in select states only contact your Hyundai dealer for availability details. Okay, and then I obviously wanted to know your first. impression of Betty White because obviously she was just a legend and everything that anyone would ever want out of a human being on television and just like such a light. So what was your first impression of her? It's again, it's everything that you, she doesn't disappoint, didn't disappoint. It was exactly what you hoped. I was on my best behavior when she came into the hair and makeup trailer and, you know, an elderly woman and who's a legend and I'm just
Starting point is 00:13:40 trying to be real good. And of course, the most past thing was, came out of her mess. out. It was some reference to, you know, your nether parts. And I was like, all right, and we're off. I don't have to be on my best behavior. The dirtier, the better with this crazy, great woman. And of course, I mean, of course. She's an incredible comedian and has the best sense of humor. And was just, was just, is, like, was that the epitome of light and beauty and, again, humble and so happy and so thankful for where she was in life and also so funny and can roll with everyone it's amazing gosh that's I look up to like that's who I want to be yet the older I get the more I want to be like betty white yeah so I rescued two golden retrievers from this organization out of well they're out of California but
Starting point is 00:14:29 they do rescues from china and south Korea oh wow and there are so many goldens that need to be saved and I wasn't going to you know be picky and say well I want a girl and I want this I'm like let me save whatever dog that you need to be rescued. And I got two golden boys, but if I had a golden girl, I was going to name her Betty. Oh, the next one. The next one you'll name Betty. Yeah, exactly. I have a question for you because you do work with such incredible people and you are on that A list. Like, you're just, you're amazing. You're so talented and incredible. And do you ever get star-struck from anybody? Oh my God, all the time. Yes, of course. I think more so now, it's more so musicians for me.
Starting point is 00:15:12 Oh. I, you know, rock stars. I'm, I'm just, it's all rock and roll for me. So anything, you know, Eddie Vedder and Metallica, you know, any, any of the old hair band rock that I used to listen to growing up, red hot chili peppers. I just, you know, I've been, had the opportunity to meet some band members or meet some of the singers. And I just don't know what to say because it is so nostalgic for.
Starting point is 00:15:40 me that just it i feel like music just brings you back to big feelings and especially the teenage years so all my feelings come back when i see them and that i get tongue tied but of course you know the one person that i was really starstruck with was when i got to work with tom cruise oh you know and doing an audition with him was pretty surreal and it was hard to stay in the moment because it was that feeling the duality of going oh my god this is tom cruise and then getting into the scene and having a great time going, oh, my God, but this is Tom Cruise. Like, this is actually Tom Cruise. And I'm doing the scene with it.
Starting point is 00:16:18 But he's just so lovely. I mean, you know, he's also just human and it's great. And you realize that. But that was a bit bigger than life. That was the one person who definitely was, I had, I took a few minutes to get into, to drop into myself. That, that I served Tom Cruise back in the day in Vancouver. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Oh, my God. at a restaurant for 10 years in Vancouver and are you Canadian I am Canadian because you were raised in Toronto right? Yeah I was I was yes so I grew up in Alberta and then I moved to Vancouver on a dance scholarship I was in like ballet and jazz and all of those things and so I moved to Vancouver and I was working at a restaurant to be able to dance at the same time and I it was like at one point in like it was right next to a hotel that a lot of celebrities stayed at so the the concierge would always say, I'll go over to this restaurant. So I served so many people, but I'll never forget Tom Cruise because he was so lovely.
Starting point is 00:17:15 And I always liked to obviously give people like space or I don't want them to feel like I was like fan growing or being like, I just want them to be comfortable if I'm their server. And I was trying so hard. And I had the same moment as you were. I'm like, but it's Tom. Yeah. You know he knows that I know who he is. Of course. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:35 And so, but you want to act like, oh, well. What's your name? Oh, Tom. I used to meet you, like, you know, and you just have that moment where you're like, almost like an out-of-body experience. Like, I'm serving Tom Cruise. Yeah. But I don't want him to know that I know that he knows, you know. Totally.
Starting point is 00:17:50 You want to stay cool. Yeah, you got to stay cool like I'm trying to do right now. I have a confession for you. Yes. We're just going to dive right in because it just came to me right now. Yeah. Talk about being starstruck. I have so many people on this podcast where I'm like so excited to talk to.
Starting point is 00:18:04 And I never really get nervous. even like I've had some people where I'm like oh I should be nervous for this one but I'm whatever I took a shot of tequila before this the before I started recording with you because I was like oh my God this is so cool and I'm I got to play it cool and then I took a shot of tequila and I was like well there's my confession like I'm a loser that I got that nervous that I love that yeah before hanging out with you oh my god but that's great and I also love that you chose tequila because that's the best kind of liquor I agree yeah tequila that's why I'm to lose I'm like, so many margaritas are calling my name.
Starting point is 00:18:40 You're going to be in heaven. It's everything. I wish I could come with you. I want to escape what you do. Come on down. We have rooms. We'll drink tequila and all Tom Cruise. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:18:51 Tell all the stories, all the confessions. Yeah, that's, well, that's what happens when. So I usually drink wine on my podcast depending on, you know, if it's not 10 a.m. in the morning. Well, I'm not above that either. But, and so usually I, that's what I say. Like, when I do my confessions, I usually have my guests. drink with me if they want and then by the time we get to the confessions I'm like oh they're all lubed up ready to tell me their secrets but you don't have any wine in your system but I'm still
Starting point is 00:19:17 going to ask you for a confession I know I knew you're going to ask you for a confession I mean I have so many I just you know there's there is a silly one from back in the day from my high school days may I go back that far or do you want it to be you may okay all right well whatever comes to your brain and whatever you think is a good confession, you tell me. It doesn't matter when. I don't know if it's a confession or just like a really embarrassing story moment, but I grew up mostly in Toronto and I had four years outside of Toronto in a small town called Niagara Lake. And it's all like orchards. And so all we did is bonfires because there was nothing else to do. And keg parties. and stuff so we were at somebody's barn it was dead of winter and you know what the weather's like in the winter in canada it's cold it's cold but you're already too cool for school so you're wearing like
Starting point is 00:20:16 a little sweater and you know whatever looks good for a bonfire kegger in a barn yep and there's no bathrooms so i go outside and the backside of the barn it's pretty damn dark i go great great spot pull down my pants soon as the stream of pee starts coming i see headlights coming around the I panic because I'm 14 or 15 years old. Sure enough, the truck comes right around and the headlights are right on me. And I had no other choice than to pull my pants up because I don't want them to see my vagina. So I pull my pants up and continue to pee my pants. Now I'm so embarrassed.
Starting point is 00:20:56 So I take my little sweater off and tie. I'm not going home, of course, because the party's just beginning. So I take my sweater off, tied around my waist and freeze for the whole night and continue to talk. to the guy that I was obsessed with who of course never talks to me otherwise but this evening of course decides to talk to me and decides to give me a ride home but on the way home he's like oh god do you smell that it smells sort of like piss and I was like I don't yeah I don't know I don't know I was out of that car so fast nothing happened it was so sad I was I was so ready at least just for a kiss but I was so embarrassed and I I figured if he if anything had happened he
Starting point is 00:21:37 would have known it was me that I'd peed my pants, basically. Yeah, he can't get that close. Oh, my gosh. That is pretty embarrassing. That's one so funny and two, so relatable for me because I'm like the amount of times I have peed behind a barn hoping like nobody would come around the corner at a bush party with a freaking bonfire. That is so up my alley.
Starting point is 00:21:58 I'm so glad. I'm so glad. A great confession. Yeah. Yeah. I did. I had a moment where I smelled like pee. It was great.
Starting point is 00:22:05 You know what? But I wonder if he. ever knew that it that's what happened because then i'm like did you talk to him after if you were obsessed with him and it gave you a ride home after that were you like because he was probably like ooh the chase she just left without even kissing me no didn't i didn't i didn't um he he he definitely he was a few grades above me and i avoided him at all costs and it was more down to me than anything he had so many girls after him anyway it was just kind of like shoes you know that guy in school i just happened to be there in front of him that night and he's like all right you
Starting point is 00:22:36 So what's up? I love that you didn't go home. I would have done the same thing. I'd dry off by the bonfire. Totally. I'll freeze my little buns off, but drink some more beer and I'll be fine. Exactly, exactly. Okay, so this spring, I've just really been, you know, feeling those good vibes, the good vibrations.
Starting point is 00:22:54 I mean, there's been so many, like my big wine guy event, good vibe. This vacation that I'm on right now, definitely the best vibe. And one thing that is always a good vibe as well in my life, no matter the season, is busy hard-seltzer. the first hard seltzer made with antioxidant, vitamin C, and bold and delicious dual fruit flavors. Vizzi Hard Seltzer always passes the vibe chat. And another good vibe. Vizzi actually just launched the first nationwide Mamosa Hard Seltzer. They took the classic OJ and Champaign duo to a whole new level by creating a hard seltzer inspired by the classic cocktail.
Starting point is 00:23:26 Vizzi Mimosa Hard Seltzer is made with real OJ and it's going to come in strawberry orange, pineapple orange, peach orange, and pomegranate orange. Honestly, all the four flavors sound incredible. They also have a lemonade hard seltzer and my personal favorite, watermelon hard seltzer. So if you're like me, you want to try all the flavors. Find out where you can purchase Vizzie by going to Vizziehardteltzer.com slash vine. Okay, that's Vizzyhardteltzer.com slash vine to get updates on their latest flavor drops and more. Sign up for their emails at Vizziehardteltzer.com slash subscribe must be 21 years or older. I feel like you guys roll your eyes at this point when I repeat myself because not surprising, I love sleep.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Okay? I mean, who doesn't love getting in bed at night? Getting cozyed up, getting the R&R that you need. One key to getting the best night's sleep is, of course, having an amazing mattress. And I always have my Helix to thank for getting me the best Zs possible. So Helix Sleep knows that everybody is unique, and they have several different mattress models to choose from. They have soft, medium, firm mattresses, ones that are great for cooling you down if you sleep hot, and even mattresses that are great for spinal alignment to prevent morning aches and pains. That might be next on the list here for this. old gal. You go to their website, take their quiz, and it will match your body type and sleep preferences to the perfect mattress for you. You then order the mattress that you're matched to, and it will come straight to your door, shift for free. And these mattresses are incredible, but you don't have to take my word for it because Helix was actually awarded the number one best overall mattress pick of 2021 by GQ and Wired Magazine. And right now, Helix is offering up to $200 off all mattress orders and two free pillows for my listeners at helixsleep.com slash vine just go to helix sleep.com slash vine to take that two minute sleep quiz and order your mattress and you know
Starting point is 00:25:14 what happy sleeping my little binos. Okay, what is the worst acting gig that you ever had and why was it so bad? Like you know how do you ever watch friends and like Joey doing the like blue lipstick commercial? Like do you ever start where you're like, you know, I, you know, know my career started with the gonorrhea medication commercial i haven't had one of those yet no like yeast infection commercials or anything like that which i totally would have done by the way i would have done anything paid a play me anything i think it wasn't even worse i i i would say that it was great it's a great film we had so much fun but i was definitely it was one of those moments where i was like who am i what kind of an actress harold and kumar go to white castle um yeah
Starting point is 00:26:03 Yeah, I had to completely just open my top and show my boobs. And, you know, it was just one of those moments. It was one of the first films I ever did. And I just felt so exposed and just went, I don't, I don't know. Is this going to lead me to porn? Like, what am I? I don't know. What I'm doing?
Starting point is 00:26:21 Is this right? Is this Hollywood? Is this what I should be doing? But it was such a great comedy. And I thought it was so funny until you're in the moment you're going, oh, God. It's the same as when I did Heartbreaked with Ben Stiller. I had the costume made glue a Merkin onto me. A Merkin is like fake hair onto that part of your body. Oh, I remember that part. Yeah. And you're standing there and they put a tube through the Merkin and
Starting point is 00:26:42 you got a guy with a pump and they're going, you know, right, cue the pee. And you're standing over Ben Stiller and fake peeing over him going, what am I doing? What is this job that I'm doing? Is this what I want to do for the rest of my life? But let me tell you, that movie, that's like, that is a top five for me. It's so freaking funny. It was a lot of fun. And it was a lot of fun. I'll tell you one role that's not the worst is your next one. Because usually you, I mean, you do a lot of comedy and funny roles and stuff, but this one's a little more serious. So tell me about this movie that you have coming up.
Starting point is 00:27:15 God, this one is called The Aviary. And it's definitely a psychological thriller. I'm really into true crime podcasts. I'm really into crazy documentaries, anything from people in prison to cults to all that kind of stuff. So this script came along. And it's about two women escaping a cult in. in the middle of the desert. And it's that whole mind game of, you know, you may be escaping physically, but you've been brainwashed for so many years and what
Starting point is 00:27:43 that does to a person. And it is a two-woman show, essentially. We've got Chris Messina who pops in as well. It's wonderful. But it's myself and Lorenza Izzo, who's a great, great little actress. And we really went down a crazy, a crazy journey, you know, that is thrilling and exciting and confusing and was a lot of fun to do. It was out in the desert right in the middle of COVID. So I think we both just needed to, we had been locked up in our homes and in our heads for a long time. And that was perfect. It was like really cathartic.
Starting point is 00:28:20 But it's a great, I really love the script. I thought it was so much fun to get to play a role like that, what it would be like, you know, to not even be able to trust your own self, which parallels life sometimes, where you. you don't trust your gut or whatnot but on a with a higher with higher stakes yeah of course that's do ever do any method acting like does it ever get to you because have you done other um like like psychological thrillers before i've done a couple um i did one with john kuzac back in the day called the number station it was again just a two-hander and it was really that one really got me
Starting point is 00:28:58 that one took me about two weeks to shake off afterwards and i wasn't even wow it was wasn't even um i'm not method at all and i try to shake it off every day but there is a uh you know you do consciously have to try to shake it off and i didn't know that i was so green back then i was just kind of in the beginning of my career and now there's a whole understanding of like you have to come home and and physically and mentally just kind of disengage from something that's heavy so so it is much easier now and and this was very light in between takes we were having such a blast so no one was going method on this thank god okay i always wonder about that because that must i mean i am so i adapt like really easily to certain situations and i feel like if i had to put myself
Starting point is 00:29:43 in a role like that if i was you know an actress i i feel like i would go dark yeah you can for sure and i think and that was it truly did happen um on number station it went dark and was in England, we were really isolated in the middle of nowhere and it was winter and it was cold and, you know, the content was really dark and again, really high stakes, life or death kind of thing and yeah, it was interesting how that can impact you because it's an emotional journey. You're digging deep and you're digging through a lot of stuff without, and you're not doing it consciously. Right. And so just all of a sudden you have all these emotions that you've dug up and there they are and you don't know why you're feeling certain ways.
Starting point is 00:30:27 And you're, you're like, you're still having to be in that role. It's not like, you're like, okay, well, now I'll go to therapy and, like, you know. Yeah. Digest all of everything that's been happening. Yeah, no, I know. But I'm just, I'm so excited for this movie. I'm fascinated by cults and like the documentaries around cults and all those kinds of things. So I can't wait to watch this.
Starting point is 00:30:45 But did you watch any cult documentaries or what did you do to prepare for, for this role and, like, how paranoia affects people? I do watch documentaries a lot. They're kind of my favorite thing. and I have watched a few documentary so on cults. I have a few friends who have been involved in cult-like places and have come out and spoke to them about how, because they're highly intelligent people. And it's just, you know, it feels like the common denominator is always a moment of, because we're always searching for ourselves and growing,
Starting point is 00:31:21 and we have our weak moments because we're human. And it seems like they're always caught up in a week. moment and someone swoops in and says, I've got the answer, which doesn't exist. There is no magic pill. So it feels like that sort of the thing is, is someone who's searching. And it could be just momentary again, or it could be a lifelong search and are really that type of person. But, you know, we had a few conversations about that. And when I say we, myself and Lorenz, the other actress and the directors, it was more about finding the rhythm here because nothing was linear. This is a little different because we're dealing with two women who have been brainwashed and lose sight
Starting point is 00:32:00 of reality. And I don't really know what that's like. I'd like to think that I've never been brainwashed. Maybe I am right now and I have no idea. But coming in and out of that state of mind was sort of the discussions were more about how we were going to play that and where that fell and how that impacted the next scene or the previous scene and how we're coming into a So those were more that, that was more the research and the discussions more so than actually, because it's not, it's, its own take and its own creation of these two characters. But, but I really do love that stuff. And I studied psychology at York University in, in Toronto. And that was sort of my jam. So for a year, right? Yeah, just a year. So were you, like, were you, you were, you were, you were, you were, you were, you were, you were, you were, you were, you were back to acting. Is that what it was? Acting was always. So I moved out of the house when I was 16. So modeling and acting, mostly television commercials, was a really great way to make money. And I was lucky that I was getting work as a model and getting work in TV commercials.
Starting point is 00:33:07 And so I had an agent. But my goal was to reform the school systems in Toronto and become a child psychologist. And that was really my passion. Still is. I got certified as a youth and child development coach during COVID. So now I'm a certified coach, and I work in juvenile hall with a lot of boys who were under the age of 18, just garnering leadership skills and all that kind of stuff. So that was always my passion. But the acting took off, and I was just brain tired from going to school for so long.
Starting point is 00:33:42 And I just thought, you know what, I'm going to give myself a break for a minute. Let's just, you know, I'm tired of doing schoolwork and working and trying to keep myself afloat. So I gave myself a year to take a year off, and then that year turned into a lifetime because the commercials turned into television shows and then that turned into like a manager. Well, you say that. I came out here. It took a while before my first jobs, but, you know. Yeah, I can't even imagine.
Starting point is 00:34:10 That's, I have, you know, friends who have been in L.A. for years trying to make it. And it's a grind. It's an absolute grind. And it can be a very scary industry to be in. and you know but so I'm but you've done it the right way so I've done it I don't know it's the right way but I've done it I'm here I'm still doing it for now you showed your boobs and here you are you're yelling what happened I need to try that okay so we're going to go back now we're going to do the reverse so getting a little deep if you could reverse time which point of
Starting point is 00:34:42 your life would you go back to it can be work related or not it could be something that you would want to go back and change or something you'd want to relive again if you could do that? What would it be? Oh, I think it would have to be the birth of my son. I'd love to relive that surreal. I don't need to do the whole labor. Just when he comes out. Just that part where you get to hold this person for the first time in your life. It is like nothing else I've ever experienced. And it was the highest high I've ever had in my life. So I would love to re-experience that part of my life, for sure. And how old is he now? He just turned nine this weekend.
Starting point is 00:35:23 He did. Yeah. It's a long time ago now. But yeah, I've got a little nine-year-old boy. It's crazy. He is the loveliest human. I just adore him. It's cool.
Starting point is 00:35:32 He's my little buddy now. So it's awesome. That's so great. I can't wait to have kids. I hope it's in the cards for me. I cannot wait. And I always love the idea. I'm sure of having a girl,
Starting point is 00:35:44 but there's something about a bond with a boy and their mother. I'm telling you, man. like mama's boys that it's there's they love their mothers like no other and and and and girls are wonderful too but gosh I just think of you know the turbulent relationships the mothers and their daughters can have and that's okay too but I'm really happy I have a boy I love it I love and gosh do I ever feel like he's going to be with me for forever he's going to be on my on mama's side forever yeah you I believe that too that's Jason my fiance say he talks to his mom every single day and she is such an incredible woman and like I sometimes you know there's people that would be like you talk to her every day and I'm like that is so sweet I love that and they just have such a good relationship and they always have and I'm like I love that I want that I want a little boy who just like calls me every day even when he's like a grown man doing his own thing totally totally that's awesome yeah well with everything going on your movie coming out where can everyone find you where are where can they watch the movie and yeah what's what's next are you going to work
Starting point is 00:36:49 as a coach. Like, tell me everything. Yeah, the movie's coming out April 29th. It'll be in select theaters and video on demand. And, you know, I've got a few things in the works. I'm about to start a film now in May that's shooting here in Los Angeles. And then I'm going off to Sweden to do a movie in Swedish in Sweden, which I'm super excited about. I got another film lined up for August as well. So there's a few things coming up. And then, of course, doll faces out right now with Cat Dennings and it's a fun little show that, you know, we just did our second season, which
Starting point is 00:37:24 is great. And yeah, and then I'm just, you'll find me in some of the juvenile halls and prisons working with people to re- rehabilitate. Hopefully, you know, hopefully I'd be of some help, but mostly it's inspiration for me and being able to hang out with those people.
Starting point is 00:37:40 Wow. But other than that, I'm momin it, you know, doing laundry by evening and glaming up, doing press by morning. That's impressive. I really, I always just bow down to moms and everything that they are, even if they aren't working moms, just being a mom is. Penny, when you say it's, that's a working mom. Being a mom is a working mom. It's there. I don't know if you ever saw it. There's this beautiful video that was went viral for a while. And it was this guy, he had put an ad maybe in Craigslist or something or in a paper and just said, you know, job, it was a job interview. And he recorded the job interviews. And he was. like, all right, so your client will need you 24-7. You sometimes might have to feed them. You might need to get up in the middle of the night to help them out. Or, you know, it was all the things in
Starting point is 00:38:28 the people. And then they said, oh, and by the way, you don't get paid. And everyone was like, what are you talking about? And it goes, that's what your mother did for you. And there were so many people who just broke down. They're like, oh, my God, you're so right. She was there 20. She or he, like dads are what a parent. But it's just one of those things. We go, it is the hardest job because you're raising a human being like it's not just you know here's some cereal and work it out but um i definitely bow down to you know all parents who just kind of who decide to to stay home and be a parent that's a huge undertaking for sure my gosh yes so many of my girlfriends do it and i'm always just like you are my hero totally it's obviously rewarding work but it's
Starting point is 00:39:12 work nonetheless and like you said it's like you mentally are having to be 24 hours you know aware and it's it's it's a lot and it's beautiful and all of those things so it sounds like you're doing a good job because your nine-year-old loves you and you just keep your wine fridge stocked wine fridge will always be stocked let me tell you is your family Swedish so do I was born in Sweden but we moved to Canada to Toronto when I was two so I've spent most of my life in Toronto. But my dad moved back to Sweden when I was six. So I've spent a lot of time in Sweden all my summers and Christmas. So it's quite a mishmash. But yeah, I would definitely say I'm Swedish Canadian, a full combo. And do you speak Swedish? Sure do. Yeah, my first language.
Starting point is 00:39:57 That's amazing. I always find it so fascinating when people know. I'm just like I speak English. I grew up in Canada. I should probably know a little French. I don't. Yeah. But it's it's hard. If none of your parents speak a different language, it's really hard to, unless you're super curious as a kid and you really want to, which doesn't often happen, but you know, you almost have to be forced into it. And I feel like because I am a fan of yours, I should know how to say your last name, but I want to hear you say it because... Oh, it is the hardest. If you don't know Swedish, it is... So in Swedish, my name is Marlin Orkemann. So it's almost like Okeman. It's almost sounds Jamaican. Because it's A with the ring on top, so it's O
Starting point is 00:40:33 instead of an A. But I hear it becomes affirmant. It's a Malin Okemum. There it is. Wow. That's beautiful. That's so beautiful. Thank you for just taking time out of your day today to talk to me and talk about the movie. You're just such a pleasure to talk to you. And exactly what I hoped you would be. You are what Jennifer Aniston was to you to me. Oh, thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you so much. Hopefully we'll get to share a glass of wine together at some point. Absolutely. That would be, it would be my honor. And I will send you some of my wine because I'm not, I'm a little. little bit of a picky wine drinker a little bit. And I love my wine. I'm very proud of it. That's a good thing.
Starting point is 00:41:14 That's a good thing. Are you, are you a red, white, or rosé drinker? All of you five. I'm not picky. Yeah, it depends on the day, you know. It depends on the meal, on the day. Yeah. Totally. I'm with you on that. That's amazing. Okay, thank you. And enjoy the rest of your day. I think this was lovely.
