You're listening to Off the Vine with Caitlin Bristow. Hey, everybody, welcome to Off the Vine. I'm your host, Caitlin Bristow. And today's guest is someone that I've been excited to have on. The video went viral, I think, of you talking about it because you've changed the way I
Starting point is 00:01:10 look at traveling. I wanted you to change the way everybody listening and watching looks at traveling. So obviously, you guys remember I shared online that Rachel's helped me save, you helped me save close to $20,000 on travel. Wasn't expecting much of a reaction, but yeah, I unlocked something because my DMs absolutely exploded for you. So everyone wanted to know what credit card should I have. Am I using points wrong?
Starting point is 00:01:34 How do I actually book these crazy flights people talk about? Is this only for people who travel all the time? We answer all of these questions instead of me trying to answer all of them myself and using chat, GPD. I just brought in the expert herself. So Rachel, which tires, I always call her Rachel Points, but her last name is Tires, better known as Rachel Points, has built. I can't believe in a year, a huge following, teaching people how to earn points smarter,
Starting point is 00:01:58 redeem them better, and travel for a fraction of what most people are paying. And before you guys tune out and think it's maybe only for like finance people or rich people, it's not, we're keeping the conversation very practical because I am still learning. And I was like, I feel like this is for anyone who's just getting started. Totally. Or people who think they know it all, you'll learn something on this podcast. Yeah. I would say even if you think it's really overwhelming and you don't know where to start, this is the perfect conversation for you. Whether you have one credit card, 15 credit cards like you.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Exactly. This episode is for everybody. So we're going to talk about the biggest mistakes, how to actually maximize the cards you already have, how to redeem points without wasting them, and some travel hacks that could seriously save you thousands. So Rachel, welcome to off the vine. Thank you, Caitlin. We're here to talk about saving money, about points, about credit cards. This is going to be everybody, grab a pen and paper or your notes, app on your phone or grab your computer, whatever it is that you use these days, because we are going to get through so much. It's going to be basically like a quick and dirty rapid fire of really important questions that I think is going to benefit.
Starting point is 00:02:59 that everybody. Your account is so genius. When did you start doing this? A year ago. No, you're kidding. June last year is when I posted my first video and I was terrible. You know, I never had really social media or anything like here and there. I'd post a picture of me on a first class or business class flight. Yeah. On my personal. And then I was like, I don't want anyone to know that I'm going to do this little side hustle account. So I downloaded TikTok. I learned how to green screen like watching YouTube videos. I mean, I'm sure you went through the same thing. Yeah. And my first video is, of course, are awful. But it kind of, it took off quickly because I think there's such a thirst for this knowledge.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Yes. Oh, my gosh. Everybody wants to know how you can fly in the laydown beds and business class and Emirates and going here and going there and like drinking champagne. And yeah, you're doing the Lord's work out there. I just did a green screen video today because somebody in my DMs has been since 2020. Okay, so this is six years of obsessing over my nose, has been telling me I have an upside. down toadstool nose.
Starting point is 00:04:01 What does that mean? I think it's because they're kind of right. No. I think they heard me say one time like six years ago that I was insecure about my bulb on the end of my nose. So I think they're like, oh, let's pounce on that. And for six years, but now I just find it so funny because I went through six years of them. I've been like, I'll play down on toe stools nose.
Starting point is 00:04:22 So I did a green screen video of it today to expose them because I'm in that mode. Yes. Yes. Good for you. Let the record show you have a beautiful nose and it fits your face perfectly. And you have a beautiful face for that matter too. Thank you. I don't. Well, even if I'm like they're kind of right, I'm not going to do anything about it because I've thought about this too many times. I have dysmorphia to the max. I will go on a tangent. Let's reel it back in. I'm talking to myself. Real it in Caitlin. Okay. Let's start with a question that everyone has been asking me. Ever since I mentioned you in my podcast, people were so curious. And like you said, think we all have this thirst for the knowledge of saving money and travel right now. So what is the biggest mistake people make with their credit cards? Hands down biggest mistake. Okay, I would say that people, a lot of the time, will just let their points sit there because they don't know how to use them. They don't feel confident using those points. And so they're just sitting there,
Starting point is 00:05:18 collecting dust and devaluing, we call it. So they're kind of losing value over time. But then the second biggest mistake, I would say, is using your points on statement credit or gift cards and getting really low value for them. What do you mean using it on gift cards? So you could get like for 60,000 points, you could get a $500 Apple gift card or you could get a $4,000 business class flight from the U.S. to Paris. I'd rather the flight. I'd rather the flight too.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Okay, what are people getting wrong when it comes to earning points? Now, let this be known. I am one of those collecting dust on my points till recently till I found your account. But I thought, oh, well, I don't know how to use them and I don't know what to use them on. And then they're going to be gone if I use them. So I just go let them build up. That's a mistake. Right.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Well, it's something we want to avoid because you want to be able to enjoy those points. I know. And then you can always earn more. Like, don't worry about them. You'll get more. Okay, that's true. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Okay. So when it comes to earning points, what are people getting wrong? So I would say a lot of people are just spending on their Platinum American Express card and earning one point per dollar. I know it used to be me too. Yeah. Before I got really into it. And so I would say there are three main types of cards that I would recommend people hold. And you can have varying degrees of this and you don't need to start with all three.
Starting point is 00:06:41 But food and groceries, like groceries and dining card. Okay. So the Amex Gold is really good for that. And you're going to earn four points per dollar that you spend on any restaurant. or supermarket purchase. Just with the gold specifically? Just with the Amex Gold specifically. And then you could have your platinum card for lounge access
Starting point is 00:07:00 because that's important to people like us and you get five points per dollar that you purchase flights with on the Platinum Amix. So I would only spend on flights basically for platinum. And then I have like a catch-all card, which is what I use for everything that doesn't fit into those main categories. And you'll get two or sometimes three X points on just everything else. So, like, I'll pay my accountant or if I'm going shopping on Revolve. Oh, my catch-all.
Starting point is 00:07:27 Oh, my gosh. Like, I'm already like, uh-oh. Lips. You say people should almost never spend on an Amex platinum. I put everything on my Amex platinum. Yeah. So I'm just not getting as many points in other ways that I could. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:07:42 Yeah. So it's a good start. At least you have a great card that affords you lounge access and it is a points earning card. But you could really supercharge your point. points earning if you were routing your spend a little bit more deliberately. And I also got an Amex. It's purple. The Delta Reserve?
Starting point is 00:08:00 Yeah. They talked me into it because I wanted my diamond medallion status to roll over into the next year. And I was so close. And they're like, well, this is what they're like, you can either spend. And it was like a ridiculous amount of money. They try and get you with that. Or get this credit card.
Starting point is 00:08:17 Okay. Perfect. Because I've got actually the Delta Reserve. of the purple one and I've got the delta platinum and I've got a delta gold. The thing that most people get wrong is that they'll often just spend on their delta cards. And so you're earning Delta miles and that means all of your points are stuck with Delta. But maybe you can get a much cheaper ticket through Air France flying blue. And so you want to be able to maintain a flexible points currency, which you would do if you were spending on like a straight Amex. But I think it's
Starting point is 00:08:47 totally viable to hold those Delta cards if you're earning towards status, which you were. And that's why I hold them as well. And I'm going to close them this year. Okay. Are you? Because now I moved to Miami and I'm in an AA hub. Now I'm no longer, as you called it, a Delta Ho.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Yeah. I related deeply to that. You're an American Airline Ho now. That's sad. Yeah, I know. But okay, because we will, my next segment is all about the airline credit card. So we'll get there. I'll finish these questions first and we'll jump to that.
Starting point is 00:09:19 But I think a lot of people assume if a car, card has a high annual fee, then it must earn the most points. False. False. But it's such a good thing to bring up because some of these cards with the higher annual fees offer outsized value through credits. So you would know the American Express Platinum gets, this is the consumer version, not the business version, but you get $75 per quarter to spend at Lulu Lemon. You get $300 each half year to spend on hotel credit with financial. hotels and resorts and the hotel collection, $100 per quarter at Rezi restaurants. The list really goes on.
Starting point is 00:09:58 So I find I usually get more like $2,000 of value out of that card annually. And the annual fee is just $895, which is definitely high. There are other options. But if you're able to offset that fee in a meaningful way, it can make a lot of sense. But how are we supposed to figure out all of the, I mean, we can follow you because you give us all the information because I watched it. I was like, oh, wow, I did not know that. And my favorite is at USA, I bet you didn't know.
Starting point is 00:10:26 And I go, no, I didn't. So thank you. But how the heck did you figure all of this out and how is one supposed to get all this information and be like, oh, well, Rezi, I use this card. And for this, I use this. And I'll get this for Lulu Lemon. I can't keep up. I think they make it confusing for a reason.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Like I've heard from some of the financial institutions that they hate having customers like me because they don't make any money off of us. Yeah. Like I'm paying my balance in full every month. I'm getting every credit of value out of the cards that I hold as I can. And then I'm optimized with my points. So they're probably losing money on people like me. And it's my mission to create other consumers that are able to optimize the way that I can. And brilliant. You know, I spend a lot of time in the Reddit threads and on YouTube. And it's kind of traditionally being quite geeky. quite nerdy to be like a points in miles person or travel hacker. Yeah, but I love geeky nerdy.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Yeah. It's smart and I think geeky nerdy is sexy. I just wanted to help bring it to the masses. Like I've got so many girlfriends that had their points sitting there, didn't know how to use them. And I was organically sharing the tips and strategies. And then that's kind of what got me thinking, hey, I bet there are a lot of other people that could use this sort of help too.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Yeah. That's post a video. It's amazing. Tell me what should people actually be looking for? when choosing a credit card. Okay, so I would look at the annual fee on the card. I would look at the spending multipliers, so the points per dollar that you earn on different categories.
Starting point is 00:11:59 I would look at the credits to offset the fee. And a welcome bonus. So when you sign up for a new credit card, they usually offer some sort of incentive for signing up. So it might be between 75,000 and 300,000 points. if you spend X in Y months. And so that 300,000 point welcome bonus could be enough for your return business class flight from the U.S. to Europe and maybe a night or two of accommodation over there.
Starting point is 00:12:29 Is there a credit card that you would be like just get rid of it? I would say anything that you're not getting value out of where the annual fee is high and you're not spending the credits on it. so long as it doesn't have a long credit history. So if you've held that specific credit card for a long time, that's going to be contributing towards a higher credit score. And so instead of closing an account like that, we would usually recommend taking a downgrade path to a no annual fee card
Starting point is 00:13:03 because you want to retain that strong credit history. And then if somebody just wants a credit card to start with, say they don't even have one, they want to start, where should they start? So if you're just getting used to credit cards, there are no annual fee cards or you could start with something quite simple and an all-rounder like the Chase Sapphire preferred. It's got a $95 annual fee, but you earn three points per dollar on restaurants and online groceries. So that's a good starter card and it will help you earning points. They've actually got an elevated intro bonus at the moment, 100,000 points when you spend
Starting point is 00:13:39 a certain amount in the first few months of opening the account. And that's just a good way to get used to it. Get used to paying off your balance each month, get used to earning points, and then you could kind of move up from that. And is it as simple as going into, logging into whatever it is, and seeing how many points you have, and then do they lay it out there of, like, where you can use the points? Or is that where you come in where they make it confusing?
Starting point is 00:14:01 They lay it out in a way where they're showcasing the least valuable redemption. So it's going to be cheapest for them. Like the statement credit or the gift cards or using it in the card issuers travel portal. Because that seems really easy and straightforward. And I think that people, when they start using points, that's the native place, the organic place to go to. But you usually get a lot more value when you transfer to an airline partner like you did. Yes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:31 What was it? Is it points dot me? Yeah, amex. point.me. Amx. Dot point. MX card holders have free access to that tool
Starting point is 00:14:39 for the U.S. Amex card holders. I think he accidentally paid for like I think No. How? I think I accidentally paid for the point dot me
Starting point is 00:14:49 sign up. Whoopsies. It wasn't crazy but might have been like a hundred bucks or something. Well amex. compoint.
Starting point is 00:14:57 That will send you to log in securely with your Amex credentials and then you have free access. Maybe I did that. But it only shows you points that you can purchase with your American Express card. So if you also hold a Chase card, it doesn't show all of the airline transfer partners that you have access to through Chase or built with the other issuers. So it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, signing up and paying.
Starting point is 00:15:20 But I do have some other tools that I like to use that can be a bit more efficient if you are choosing to invest in one of these points search tools. Because all, okay, I have a platinum Amex, then I have the purple one that I can never remember. And then I just have a normal debit card. I mean, that's okay. It's a good start. You could be more optimized. Okay, so what's my next move? If I was you, there are two directions.
Starting point is 00:15:48 And depending on where you spend the most money, I would either get the built palladium. And that's, it's, I don't know, it's a little bit under the radar right now. They built relaunched their cards in February. And there was a bit of an uproar because they made it a little bit harder to earn points. But this built palladium card earns 3x on everything. I use a built cash accelerator to earn an extra point. It's normally just 2x on everything. So it's such a complex program.
Starting point is 00:16:16 But when you understand it, it's really good. And built points are the highest value points currency, in my opinion. You can transfer to a lot of really great airline partners. Okay. Or if you wanted to take a different direction, the path that I went was first platinum. and then gold. Okay. Because it feels really natural as the next step.
Starting point is 00:16:33 And four points per dollar on groceries and dining, if you do the math on that, let's say you spend $2,000 a month on groceries and dining. If you're putting that on an MX platinum, that's 24,000 points per year. If you're putting that on an Amex gold, it's 96,000 points per year. And that's a business class ticket to from the US to Europe
Starting point is 00:16:53 and maybe economy on the way home. Wow. That's so fascinating. Mm-hmm. Like, could somebody, I was thinking about this when I was booking and I got a little overwhelmed because I like convenience. I thought about just calling you or messaging you and be like, can you help me? Do you have like a program where people can sign up where you're like, I'll jump on a call
Starting point is 00:17:11 with you and help you? You should do that. I don't do the one-on-one consulting. Yeah. People do ask me all the time, but I think it's just hard to fit in, right? Yeah, yeah. But I have a course. So it's like an hour and a half.
Starting point is 00:17:22 It's very efficient, but it teaches you everything that you need to know about earning points and redeeming them. Because I wanted to just make something that I could empower people with where it wasn't going to take weeks of time. Where did they find this? Oh, it's on my website. It's at rachelpoints.com slash course.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Okay, and where are you from? I'm from Australia. Oh, you are? Okay, I figured, but I never want to insult someone if they were, like, from New Zealand, and I sought Australia. Well, I was wondering, because you're Canadian, how does it work with moving here
Starting point is 00:17:49 and having credit to get credit cards? Was that a whole debacle for you? It sure was. Yeah. Yes. For so long, you would have poop your pants. I literally was spending so much extra money because I was I just was like, I don't know anything and I'm too scared and I don't like want to put. I used my Canadian just credit card for
Starting point is 00:18:10 everything, which was spending extra money because of the dollar because I was just too scared to go figure it out. Yeah. I was also a very different person 10 years ago where I was scared to do anything and then like I didn't even want to open my mail because I didn't want to deal with it. And now I'm like empowered to do everything by myself. So it's different. But I definitely was like being an idiot. Yeah. Well, it's such a different system, you know?
Starting point is 00:18:34 And I had to now I have a work visa. So it's much different. And that helps me obviously in many different ways. Okay. Can I tell you one thing I don't miss? Since you asked, no, you didn't. But planning my entire outfit around my period. Okay.
Starting point is 00:18:48 And that's for real. And you know those products you buy it once and then wonder how you ever lived without them. Well, that's Nix for me. I love that I can throw on a pair of Knicks, leave the house, go about my day, and not have that little voice in the back of my head constantly wondering, am I okay? It's honestly just one less thing to think about. They look and feel like regular underwear, but they're leakproof. They have different absorgencies depending on what you need.
Starting point is 00:19:11 So they've completely changed how I get through that time of the month. And I'm obsessed with their new super leakproof mini dream boxer. So cute, which let's be honest, isn't always the case with period underwear. It has a new mini-length, super fun prints. Think like Pocodot stripes, cheetah, classic, sexy black, cute lace detailing, and of course absorbs up to eight super tampons worth. I've been wearing them overnight, just so nice waking up without immediately doing the mental checklist or rushing to check the sheets.
Starting point is 00:19:39 It's just one of those little things that makes life so much easier. So head to nix.com and you'll see why I love nix. And don't forget to use code vine for 15% off your order. Get leakproof undies, amazing bras. and don't forget to check out the new mini dream boxer. That's K-N-I-X.com, code vine. Nix.com, code vine. Okay, if loving your dogs a little too much is wrong,
Starting point is 00:20:04 then I don't want to be right. Honestly, just ask Pino and Raman. They have somehow convinced me they deserve the best of everything. And you know what? They're absolutely right. And this is why I love Chewy. It's my go-to for pretty much everything they need. Food, treats, toys, beds.
Starting point is 00:20:18 If Robin and Pino have decided it's a necessity, chances are I'm ordering it from Chewy. They have over 100,000 products from all the brands I know and trust. And with fast one to two day shipping, I never have to stress about making an extra trip to the pet store. But what I love is that Chewy isn't just for shopping. They also offer pet prescriptions, pet insurance, telehealth vet visits, and they're even opening vet clinics across the country. Really just feels like they thought of everything a pet parent could need. And their customer service is absolutely amazing. You can chat with someone or call any time day or night. Something doesn't work out.
Starting point is 00:20:53 They have 100% satisfaction guarantee so you can return it within a year. For life with pets, there's Chewy. And right now you can save $20 on your first order and get free shipping by going to Chewpanions. tchewy.com slash off the vine podcast. That's Chewpanions.chewy.com slash off the vine podcast to save $20 on your first order with free shipping. Chewpanions.com slash off the vine podcast. Minimum purchase required, new customers only, terms and conditions apply. So see site for complete details.
Starting point is 00:21:30 What do you think a misconception is, or the biggest misconception about points that you hear all the time? That's a great question. I would think the biggest misconception about points, I think is that it's hard to spend them efficiently. Once you kind of crack the code on it, it becomes really easy. It can be difficult to find the award availability at the lowest points pricing rate, but that's just a function of there being scarcity in that pricing. It's not plentiful.
Starting point is 00:22:05 You do have to look for it. But once you learn how to transfer to an airline partner, it's pretty easy from there. So if I, okay, I'm going to move to the next. If I just like doing examples. So if I'm buying groceries this afternoon and if I had the platinum gold, I would use that. You'd use the gold. Okay, if I'm buying concert tickets, I'd put it on my built palladium. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:29 Unless if it's through Stubhubhub, the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers $150 each half year for Stubbub. What about seat geek? I'm a big seat geek guy. They don't know for any seat geek credit. Ah. Hmm. Okay. What about if I'm paying for everyday expenses?
Starting point is 00:22:44 That also would be on that one? Built Palladium. And then flights, you would use the MX Platinum. Yeah. And sometimes I would purchase. hotel bookings through the Amex Travel Portal to use my $300 semi-annual credit and you'll get points for that. So you get, tell me about the semi-annual credit.
Starting point is 00:23:03 $300 each half year to be spent at fine hotels and resorts or the hotel collection, prepaid reservations in the Amex Travel Portal. So there's like a very specific list of hotels where you can use this $300 credit each half year. But then you get early check-in, late checkout, sweet, or just room upgrades when available. You get $100 of property credit. There are all these nice little benefits that come along with it.
Starting point is 00:23:30 I got totally done one today, though. I used my Chase Sapphire Reserve credit for the hotel where I'm staying in the pantry. Yeah. Oh, love the pantry. But there was a sweet upgrade, which was like a level above the upgrade that I was eligible for. So, I mean, this is like a $5,000 per night hotel book. Yeah. But I made it work with my points and my credits.
Starting point is 00:23:52 Oh my gosh. Wait, so if you don't use it, do you lose it? Like, if you don't use those $300, is it gone? You lose it. Gone. What are we doing? How rude is that? What are we doing? I have probably lost and wasted. Oh, my gosh. It hurts to think about it. It does hurt to think about it. Oh, my gosh. Have you been spending your Lulu Lemon credit? I don't know. I didn't even know. Didn't even know those things. Make sure you go in and enroll. Go into the app and look out. Yeah. This is crazy. Okay, sorry, I interrupt you. No, just make sure in the app you enroll in the credits. Like you'll enroll in the Uber, cash. Have you done that? No. Lulmon, Rezi. Yeah, a lot of the times they require you to enroll.
Starting point is 00:24:35 And some people might see a video and think, oh, great, I can just go out and spend it Lulu Lemon. But they get you, you know? But the app is very good. If you go into the app, it's pretty self-explanatory. Where you need to. I want to make you do that after this. Let's do it. I just put it.
Starting point is 00:24:51 book the studio an extra hour to get you to get my ducks in a row. Okay, should people be putting absolutely everything they can on credit cards if they're paying them off every month? I would say yes. I can't think of any instances where I don't put it on a credit card. Why do people say cash is king then? So cash is king. Well, I just did a whole, tips. I just did a whole reaction video to Dave Ramsey, who says that credit cards are the worst ever. And I did the math on even if he was, using a cashback credit card. Say he was doing a 2% cashback and spending $500,000 a year on personal and business expenses. If you were investing that cashback into the SMP with compounding interest over time, you would have $500,000 in 20 years. So what's his point? I think he has PTSD. Well, I shouldn't
Starting point is 00:25:45 say that. Dave Ramsey. I think he was burnt from loan sharks and credit cards in the early days. But Because he's ranting about this stuff now, I think a lot of people aren't realizing the opportunity that's at their fingertips. Yeah, because people listen to him. And that said, if you're not good with money, if you tend to overspend, credit cards may not be for you. But if you're able to pay everything off at the end of the month, go for it. And now Billet allows you to pay both rent and mortgage on your belt card too. So you can unlock points on that spend. You know what?
Starting point is 00:26:19 I think I have the Built app for. my apartment rent. Yes, yeah. I just didn't realize it was the same thing. It's the same thing. So I should get a credit card. Yeah, you actually don't even need the built card to sign up and be part of their neighborhood program, which can earn you extra points through like lift rides or eating at specific restaurants.
Starting point is 00:26:37 So they've built a really solid program. That's interesting. Okay, I do want to talk quickly about airline credit cards. Kind of what we were talking about with, if you fly one airline a lot, then we should get that airline's credit card. but that's not always the best move, which we kind of touched on. Yeah, it would depend on the specific perks you were looking for, like check baggage or status. Right. So then what were you going to say about the...
Starting point is 00:27:03 Okay. Yeah. So a lot of my friends have Delta credit cards that they spend on because they say I only fly Delta. But Delta is notorious for having very expensive business class flights when you're using Sky Miles. Yes. And so you might find a flight in the Delta portal for 400. thousand delta miles and you might think that's crazy. I don't have that many points and if I did I'd blow them all on one flight. Right. But they code share or they have a partnership with flying blue,
Starting point is 00:27:32 which is KLM and Air France. And Air France at KLM's award chart is much more favorable. So sometimes you can even get that Delta operated aircraft, the same seat for 60,000 points instead of 400,000 points if you're purchasing through Delta. So if you have Amex points, you can transfer. vote to Delta or Flying Blue. And so you don't want to be spending too much money on the credit card of the airline. Better to keep it flexible. Okay. I just realized something.
Starting point is 00:28:03 Air France is tied to Delta. They're partners, yeah. Could wait. Because I flew all the way to Paris and back, Air France, could I call them and ask to have those miles added to my Delta app? So you can actually use your frequent fly number from Delta. when you're booking the flight with Air France. Oh, shit.
Starting point is 00:28:23 And you would be getting the points automatically. But I forgot. So can I call and get them? I would say they've gone to your Flying Blue account because you would have created that account. Yes. And sometimes maybe they can move the points after the fact, but it might be a little bit difficult. Or they might say no. But yeah, totally.
Starting point is 00:28:44 Once you're flying, the Sky Team is what their alliance is. You just put your Delta number in there instead of you're flying blue. So if we're all loyal to an airline, we should check what other airlines are affiliated and get them. Exactly. Exactly. To see if they're better options. Right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Yeah, because you could be flying with Qantas, but you want to use your American Airlines frequent flying number and you'll earn those A.A. points. What are flexible points? Oh, flexible points is just when you can transfer them between many different hotels or airlines. How do you know if you have flexible points? Well, you would be able to check in your credit card portal and see where you can transfer those points to. Versus when you earn on a hotel credit card, like a Hyatt card, you're earning Hyatt points. When you earn on a United card, you're going to be earning United Miles. So that's usually the difference.
Starting point is 00:29:42 If you're on a co-branded card, you're losing that flexibility. I have heard that they're much more valuable. Flexible points. Oh, flexible points. Yes, because then you have all of the options to transfer to different airline partners, depending on who's flying the route that you want for the cheapest price. Like when you looked at Point Me, you would have seen there a lot of different options. Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:03 But the best one that day was flying blue. Yes. It really is, like for people listening, because I know this can sound so overwhelming and, like, daunting and just too much work. But it is one of those things where once you do it and you empower yourself to do it, You're like, holy shit, I just saved literally thousands of dollars. Like, it was worth the hour of being like, hey, what? And now I have to transfer them here and do this and like looking into where they're at.
Starting point is 00:30:28 I feel like it's so worth it. Yeah. And now you know. And now next time you go to book a flight, you can checkpoint me or give me a call. We'll chat it out. And then, yeah, it's just a game changer. And I really like, it's the same price some of the time or sometimes I even pay less than flying economy. And how much more comfortable is that?
Starting point is 00:30:47 Lay flat seat. I live. I don't want the flight to end. I know. You don't want to get off. No, like, when it was a seven and a half hour flight on the way back. Too short. I was like, well, I want to watch one more movie because I was just really enjoying myself.
Starting point is 00:31:01 Have you done Emirates yet? Yes. Emirates is the best. It's, the fact that they just have a bar you can go stand at and like hang out at and like then go lay down in your bed and nap. The one you posted the other day. I haven't had that experience though. I don't know if it was the Game Changer Suite.
Starting point is 00:31:16 That's their top of the line. It only flies very specific routes. But my favorite way to fly to Europe from here is either going to Athens or to Milan because Emirates operates both of those routes. So it's the best. It's a good little hack. Okay. So how many points did you spend and how on and where were you going?
Starting point is 00:31:36 Tell me everything about this Emirates trip because you walked in, for anyone who doesn't know, just go watch this video. And you walked into the suite that had like a couch and a massive TV. and then you walk around the corner and there's a bed. And that's Etihad, the residence. Oh, that's wonderful. That's the closest thing in commercial aviation to flying private. But yeah, you literally get your own living room, bathroom with shower, bedroom.
Starting point is 00:31:59 It's a little ugly, though, compared to Emirates. I think Emirates is more beautiful. No, that was Etihad. Okay, weird. I haven't heard of that one. Yeah, it's based in Abu Dhabi. Okay. It's, they don't operate as many flights, but the Middle Eastons really know what they're doing.
Starting point is 00:32:15 when it comes to airlines. And so that flight cost me 140,000 points, and then it was $379 in taxes and fees. That was for the first class ticket. And then you can upgrade from first class to the residents. There's only one residence on each of these A380 aircraft. And that upgrade is cash $2,390. And that was a seven-hour flight from Abu Dhabi to London,
Starting point is 00:32:44 which was too short. I just wanted to go around again. And then I just like I would have, if I was a ding-dong, I would have absolutely spent the $8,300 one way on Delta for a laydown because I was, I'm not a ding-dong. But I was like, that's crazy that people just go ahead and pay that. I know. I know.
Starting point is 00:33:02 Like, okay, after that trip when I landed in London, I got an American Airlines flight back to Miami where I live. That was a $15,000 flight. And I spent $82,000 points. And I didn't know it was like a couple hundred dollars of cash. But it's just crazy to think that people are paying $15,000 for a flight like that. Whereas even for economy, they're probably paying more, you know? Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:33:27 And then I'm always thinking about, yeah, I could fly that flight or I could put that money on the SMP and have it gaining compound interest over time and retire early. Yeah. That sounds great. Yeah. That sounds really great. Okay. Why is transferring points often a better value than booking directly through your credit card portal? Yeah, the credit card portal will normally give you something like one cent per point.
Starting point is 00:33:52 And then if you transfer over to an airline partner, you can often get closer to three, four, or sometimes up to 16 cents per point of value. Okay. Yeah. So I'm flying to Canada in August. What do I do? Okay, August. So I would be looking at seats. It's dot arrow.
Starting point is 00:34:13 Okay. This is another tool. Dot arrow. Uh-huh. A-E-R-O. Okay. Okay. And you can use that one for free for searches up to 60 days from today, but allows
Starting point is 00:34:25 you to search over all of the program. So if you had the built points that you mentioned or maybe you have a chase card or a different card, C-E-E-E-R-O-will allow you to filter across all of those card programs. And it allows you to check more dates at once. So that's a big tip that a lot of people don't think about. But if you have some date flexibility, you might want to search seven days either side of a desired date. And then the tool is going to come back and say it's actually cheapest to fly on Tuesday the 10th, you know?
Starting point is 00:34:55 And if you were just searching one day specifically, you might have come back with a day that had no award availability or a really expensive day. Maybe it's cheaper to fly just two days later. So, okay. If you can plan your trip around your flights, that's what us points in mind. Nets do. But like getting the flight first. You are now. You're going to us.
Starting point is 00:35:17 I'm geeking out over you knowing about it. Well, now, like, I recommend people look for the flight, especially if they have like a specific a line or route that they want to fly and then ask for the PTO after that. Yeah. You know, it's interesting. Something people ask me about way more than I ever expected is betting. Like, I feel like whether I'm posting from Nashville or New York, everyone's always like, where are your sheets from?
Starting point is 00:35:41 Well, the answer is always Bowling Branch. not kidding when I say, it's followed me from one home to the next because once I found Betty and I loved, I was not about to switch. So I'm someone who gets hot when I sleep, especially in the summer and both doggies cuddled up right next to me. Yes, please, always, and I may be a broken record, but these have honestly made such a difference. Their sheets are made from 100% organic cotton woven for airflow so they feel light and breathable instead of heavy. They don't have that slick synthetic feeling like some cooling sheets have. They just feel incredible. incredibly comfortable and every wash somehow makes them even softer. I also have their
Starting point is 00:36:17 comforter and their duvet cover, so my entire bed is basically Bowlin Branch at this point, and it's one of those purchases that I absolutely have zero regrets about because I use it every single night. Genuinely use Bowlen Branch and I wouldn't recommend it if I didn't love it. So sleep cooler this summer with Bowlen Branch. Starting point is 00:36:58 but honestly it's not even a joke. They know exactly how to work me. One look with those sweetly little eyes and I suddenly am canceling plans to hang out with them. Oh, it sounds like a dream. And then I'm buying another toy they definitely don't need making sure they're as happy as they can be. They're my little best friends and I would do absolutely anything for them. So today's episode is sponsored by the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Program. The ASPCA is not an insurer and is not engaged in the business of insurance. Do you think that if people are listening, they're going to think that transferring points is difficult and is it? People are probably going to think it's a little difficult.
Starting point is 00:38:46 I would say once you've watched a few videos or even just done it yourself, I'm someone that really learns when you actually like take those steps yourself. And it sounds like you were that way as well. Like it kind of unlocked for you. Yes. And then I mean, hello, chat GPT. I honestly would take screenshots and I was like, it's saying this. and they're like, oh, that's because you have to go back and do this and then do this.
Starting point is 00:39:07 Like, it does try and make it trick, like the, these websites try and make things tricky. Yeah. But chat GPTCs through that. Yeah. And it really helped me. So I would recommend that people go to amex.compoint. comi or seats.ero and just do a dummy search. Just say, okay, I want to see what the flight prices look like from my city to Tokyo.
Starting point is 00:39:31 Put a wide range on it. Just use the free version. but start getting comfortable and start just understanding it that way. Yeah, so if somebody had 100,000 points, that would that be the smartest way to just like go start to figure out how you would use them? Yeah, that's what I would do. Okay. And when should someone pay cash instead of using points?
Starting point is 00:39:51 Okay, good question. I would say if you're getting under two cents per point of value, it's probably better to pay cash. In economy, that can go either way. Usually it's the business or first-class flights where you're getting those higher cents per point of value. But that said, there are times when I will do a bad redemption just because I want a very specific flight or I want a specific hotel and it's going to dip below my ideal sense per point valuation. But I have enough points where I can justify doing that and I'd rather save the cash. and I'm, you know, earning points and spending them, you know, like how I recommend people do. Do points expire?
Starting point is 00:40:35 If they're in one of the airline portals, they can depending on the airline program, like Japan Airlines. I think they expire after three years, for example. But in your in your Amex account or in Chase, they shouldn't expire to my knowledge. Okay. Good to know. For somebody at homeless, because I already said the Canada thing. pretend they're sitting at home on the couch. Hey guys. And they want you to walk them through exactly what to do.
Starting point is 00:41:02 First website you would open. Okay. Well, first I want to talk about their credit card stack, right? Make sure they've got the optimized categories for their spend. Maybe they need to open a new card or two new cards over a space or period of time. Okay. And earn some more points. I personally am going to seats.
Starting point is 00:41:22 dot aero and I pay for it I think that it's I mean it's the best one if you are actively using I shouldn't say that I shouldn't say it's the best one it's currently my favorite one there you go well I feel like people just immediately go to Google search flights yes yeah and they great well there are some good apps for that as well so I use points path which is a free extension for Chrome and it'll show you whether it's a good points price to pay points or whether you should pay cash. And so it kind of takes that guesswork out. Yeah. Okay. What's points yeah? Points yeah is another one like Seats.O or like the point me. There's so many. Are those free? They are free. If you have certain cards. Well, no, within certain constraints. Like I think you can only
Starting point is 00:42:10 search one or two days either side and otherwise you have to kind of search day by day. It just depends. They always want you to pay, but they'll just limit functionality. As a Canadian and knowing that some of my Canadians, what, some of my followers are Canadian, can Canadians use these same websites? So you can use the websites, but you would just need to filter based on the airline partners that your credit cards have access to. I do get asked that question a lot, especially I've got a lot of Australian followers as well as Canadian friends. But seats.
Starting point is 00:42:41 dot Aero is probably where I'd be recommending to go. And the Canadian Amex and the Australian Amex card holders, they don't get the free access to point on me. Okay. So you start there, then where's the middle and the end? Where's the middle and the end?
Starting point is 00:42:56 Oh, no. I skipped a lot, didn't I? Well, I feel like you go to, okay, you get the right credit card, you get the points, you go to these websites, you then find a way to book it, and then it is simple as
Starting point is 00:43:08 it's just laid out for you. Once you find that availability, and sometimes you might need to create a free account with the airline partner to confirm that the availability exists on their website, site directly because you've seen it on a tool, but you don't book through that tool.
Starting point is 00:43:22 You still book direct with the airline. Once you confirm that that airline availability or award seat exists, then you would go back to your credit card issue a portal. You would put in your airline frequent flyer number that you've just created and connect your credit card to that airline frequent flyer number and then transfer the points across that you need to book that flight. And then you get on the flight. And that bob's wrong.
Starting point is 00:43:47 Wait, is this a thing? I remember going on Delta a couple times and then I was like, oh, maybe I'll do a different date and I closed it. I came back and the prices were jacked up. That's a thing. That's a thing. Oh my God. They like knew that I came there and then they're like, oh, she came back. Ha ha.
Starting point is 00:44:03 Yoink. Yeah. And it's really hard. Like you can't just open an incognito browser. Like they know that it's you somehow. That is like a scam. And they're profiling us. If they think that you're a business traveler or like you're well off.
Starting point is 00:44:17 They're going to charge you more. How is it legal? It can't. It can't be legal, right? There's got to be some sort of class action lawsuit coming. What I do with Delta, it's really easy to change your flight if it gets cheaper as it gets closer to the date. So you'll just look in the app and you go to change flight. You've probably seen that in the app before.
Starting point is 00:44:39 Yeah, and if the flight has gotten cheaper, which often they are, if they've jacked out the prices for you, then you can get a really simple refund of the difference, and that will work for both cash or points. I do it all the time because they really get me. That's crazy. That makes me mad at them because I feel like I have a personal relationship with them, and I'm like, why are you doing me dirty like that? Right.
Starting point is 00:45:00 You know, a lot of these airlines I've heard make more money off of their credit card products than they even make off the flights. So it must be a tough business. That makes sense, actually. Then how far in advance should people start looking to book a flight? Is it better to look closer to? It depends. So all of the airlines have different award charts that they open up availability, like 330 to 360 days out, generally speaking. So right now, Tokyo is a really popular destination. If you're wanting to go there, you might want to plan 360 days in advance so you can snap up those award seats as they become available. I'm never that organized. I'm way more last minute. And I find that seats are kind of released sporadically throughout the year as well. And if you're able to be flexible in where you might be able to stop over or the dates,
Starting point is 00:45:49 you can usually find something that works. I asked our listeners what they wanted to know and a lot of reoccurring questions. And I don't even know there is an answer to this, but if there is, they want to know what the cheapest day is to actually fly. So I would say it's usually midweek sometime. I usually find like a Tuesday or a Wednesday. Yeah. It's like Fridays sometimes can be more expensive. or Saturday, Sunday, because that's when the airlines know people are going to their vacation or coming home. And when my friends ask me for help, they're always like, I want to come home
Starting point is 00:46:24 Sunday night. And I'm like, so does everyone else. Yeah, so does an award availability. So if you're able to come home on Monday, that might be a bit cheaper. But it really depends. And being able to stay flexible with it makes a big difference. Yeah, which should people book round trip tickets or two one-way tickets? So when you're doing the points in miles stuff, it's usually a lot easier to put those puzzle pieces together as one ways. But there are certain instances where it can be cheaper to buy the round trip. That might be with like Emirates or buying flights through Japan Airlines. Sometimes it's only a little bit more to buy the return flight.
Starting point is 00:47:01 And these are just these nuances that you really don't realize until you're deep in the game. And then do you think people should ever buy points? Usually no. Okay. But a lot of the time, these airlines will be selling their points on sale. And so if you've got a flight with Alaska Airlines, it might cost half the price if you just purchase the points on the Alaska website and then use points to purchase. It's kind of crazy how that works, but I see it quite often for Alaska, sometimes American
Starting point is 00:47:33 airlines, and Hilton points are a big one. Yeah. Hilton points are usually a lot cheaper to purchase than buying the... Why is it my favorite thing when someone from all? Australia says, no. No. I love it. It's fun for us to say too.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Yeah, I really enjoy it. But people are saying that my accent has gotten softer. I think I've been in America for too long. How long have you been in America? Eight years. Yeah, because sometimes it's very strong and sometimes it's not all. But it's kind of same with when I first moved to the States. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:05 I was like, I get it. I'm Canadian. Like everyone would be like, oh, you. And I'm like, yeah. But now I feel like nobody notices it. me. Yeah, I don't really notice it on you. You must have lost it. Oh, no. Oh, no. Did you just say, oh, no. Oh, no. I love it so much. You're like 10 years to 10 years, yeah, yeah. 10, well, 11 now. Wow. 11. That's so crazy. It sure does. freaks me on. So I have pretty high standards
Starting point is 00:48:29 when it comes to makeup, but only because I've tried a lot of different products over the years. Starting point is 00:50:55 Yeah, still worth it. Because why wouldn't you want to lay flat for that one time? Yeah, travel. Treat yourself. Exactly. You deserve it. Actually, you deserve it more than most. Yeah. I feel like those are the people that are saving up and they work so hard to get to this point. Then you can save money and lay down. Treat yourself. Yeah. Okay. How many credit cards is too many? I would say that's going to differ from person to person. At the moment, I probably have about 15 open. 15?
Starting point is 00:51:21 Yeah, you're 15 credit cards? Yeah, it's quite a few. Holy shit. But I get value out of most of them, except for right now the Delta cards that I'll probably be closing out. But as long as you can spend responsibly and you are paying off those cards each month, if you're getting value out of them and offsetting the annual fee,
Starting point is 00:51:40 I mean, I might stop at 30. That might be like a little bit confusing. I'm confused with three. I actually am. Wait, can opening new credit cards hurt your credit score? It can hurt your credit score in the short term. There'll be a little ding, but that one falls off pretty quickly. Okay.
Starting point is 00:51:58 And then ultimately, I find that it will increase your credit score in the long term because you have lower credit utilization and more credit available to you. So do you need excellent credit to even get started? On some of the MX cards, you are meant to have excellent credit, like over 700, but it will depend based on the card that you're going for in maybe your credit profile. But I would say, like there's going to be a path to get started no matter what. How quickly can someone realistically earn enough points for a free trip? I would say you could earn enough points within three months. Because if you open a new credit card, maybe you open a new credit card.
Starting point is 00:52:40 maybe you open the Amex Gold. You can earn as high as 100,000 points when you spend $8,000 in the first six months. I think the current number is. And then you're spending on that card and earning points just through your purchases for groceries and dining. And so 150,000 points, that'll get you a return business class flight if you're flexible with dates and choose the right airline to fly with. And maybe a few nights of accommodation depending on how nice. of a hotel you want to stay at. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:12 I usually tell people to optimize four flights with their points when they're just getting started because you could get an Airbnb or get a hotel cheap on booking.com for cash, right? Right. And save your points for the flights. Actually, don't even use booking.com. There's a company called rove.com. Roe, R-O-V-E. Yep.
Starting point is 00:53:32 Okay. Rove.com slash Rachel gets you 1,500 bonus points. Really? They market hotels through. their platform and then they pay you in points when you make a cash booking on a hotel. So there are even instances where you might book your Paris Hotel and earn enough points on that booking to buy your business class flight. That's so crazy. It's crazy. I'm like, how do you, do you even spend money anymore or just points? I mostly spend points. So in February, I did around
Starting point is 00:54:02 the world trip flying the world's best first class flights. And the cash price of those flights was $60,000, I spent $4,000. All just from figuring out the point system. Point system. And don't get me wrong, it was a lot of points. It was 700,000 and something points. But once you know what you're doing, it's not that difficult to earn that many points. And especially a lot of people have small businesses or large businesses that they can
Starting point is 00:54:30 run, spend through and collect a lot of points and be able to live quite lavishly. But you don't have to. You can also just be an everyday person that buys groceries and eats out twice a week and you can still. So even if you're not doing the like the MX gold, the platinum, you should still just on one credit card, do groceries and what else did you say? Groceries and restaurants dining. You know, even if you don't want to get crazy deep into it, maybe you would just get one card and that might be the built palladium card because it's going to earn two or three X on everything and you'll still get priority pass lounge access. and you can pay your rent or mortgage with it as well. Or similarly, the Capital One Venture X,
Starting point is 00:55:13 that's going to get you Capital One lounge access, priority pass lounge access, as well as 2X on everything, and there's some travel credit on it, and that's just $395 annually. God, I like Priority Pass. Yeah. I just love an airport lounge so much.
Starting point is 00:55:28 You know what's so disappointing, though, when you get to an airport that doesn't have a lounge or the lounge isn't in your terminal, or you get a first-class American Airlines flight, and it doesn't come with lounge access. No, American Airlines pisses me off because they're like, oh, you're not flying international. I'm like, is everyone in here flying international right now? Because otherwise you can't get lounge access.
Starting point is 00:55:46 That blows my mind unless you get their credit card, which I have still not gotten. Well, I feel like that's your next move. It might be. Well, actually, over getting the American Airlines credit card, I was thinking that a city card would be best because city retains the flexible points currency but can transfer to American Airlines. God, you have to, like, you got to know your shit. It's like an encyclopedia in here.
Starting point is 00:56:11 Yeah, my brain could never. I'd be like, I've been up since four this morning to come from Miami and get an early flight. And so I feel like I'm a little space cadet. You don't sound like a space cadet. Thank you. I got 10 hours of sleep and I sound like a space cat. I'm like, this is blowing my mind. Like, okay, last question is what is one thing?
Starting point is 00:56:32 Every listener should stop doing email. immediately. I would say stop redeeming your points in the credit card issuer portal before you learn how to check the other airline programs. Yeah. And like I think my advice to everybody would be like, just follow you on Instagram. Take the time to actually follow what it says. Use chat GPT if you have to do to sometimes they really get me out of a jam. And save yourself some money. Yeah. And maybe even look at. your app for your credit card and make sure you're enrolled in the credits and make sure you understand what credits you have available to you. Hi, me.
Starting point is 00:57:13 I need to do that. Make sure go shopping at Lulu Lemon after this. What the heck? I'm literally pulling up my Amex app. Yeah, you're probably going to look at it and be like, bleh. Oh, I'm going to cry. You're going to cry. So many months of Lulu Lemon wasted.
Starting point is 00:57:27 No. Truly. No, it's going to be fine. They just refreshed it in September last year. That's kind of where I got my big start on Instagram. Oh, yeah? everyone realized they had all of these new credits to spend and they needed someone to teach them. That's so cool.
Starting point is 00:57:40 I just feel like I love when I can talk to somebody that gives like eye-opening information and helps. Like you're going to help so many people to save money and maybe they're going to have their first laydown bed experience and be like, thanks, Rachel. Please tag me if you do. Rachel dot points. Yes. So many people, I think we all feel it can be complicated.
Starting point is 00:58:00 And that's something like maybe only frequent flyers would understand. but I do feel like you make it more approachable, especially from following you and watching your videos. I'm like, oh, okay. Yeah. Which is obviously why you do it. I'm just a small town girl from Outback Australia. If I can do it, you can do it too. You said nine years or eight years?
Starting point is 00:58:18 Eight years. Yeah. What made you move here? I got like a gut feeling in L.A. I went there to do study abroad in California. And when I got to L.A. I was like, this is my place. And it was my place for the first eight years of living in the States.
Starting point is 00:58:32 and now I'm a Miami girl. It's so fun. It's really fun. It's so nice and warm. I just love the heat. You do? Yeah. How do you feel about a heat?
Starting point is 00:58:41 I'm a Canadian. I like cold. I like seasons. I want to experience winter. I want the snow to fall on Christmas. I want to like walk through the crunchy leaves. I want to bathe in the summer and then get a little spring cold. You make it sound glorious.
Starting point is 00:58:54 Yeah, I love it. Yeah. I really do. Oh, and I don't think I've said to say your Instagram. Oh, no, you did. Yeah. Rachel dot points. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:01 Yeah. Good. So that whole time, just telling people to follow you and they're not saying her. I mean, they could figure it out. But thank you so much. Well, thank you. And I wanted to thank you as well for even shouting me out in that video because you didn't need to say anything about me. You could have just shared the tip that you, the hack that you had found.
Starting point is 00:59:18 But I really appreciate it. Thank you. I want people to be able to support you and then be able to, it's like, help me help you. You know, you're all help each other. You all help each other. I love show now people's businesses. if they're helping other people figure stuff out. It's amazing.
