I'm your host, Caitlin Bristow. My guest today is someone who has been called a rising star countless times, but since the release of her recent Netflix special, I think it's safe to say she has risen.
Starting point is 00:03:47 She is a hilarious comic in her mid-20s who already has about a decade of experience. In addition to her Netflix special quarter life crisis, you may have also seen her on the comedy lineup on Netflix, the Tonight Show, or on tour with Conan, among countless other appearances. She's also one of the hosts of the self-helpless podcast, a podcast that dives in all things, self-improvement with three amazing comedians, very excited to hear more about her story and what it's like living with a new boyfriend during quarantine. So please welcome to the podcast, Taylor Tomlinson. Hi. Hello. how are you doing nice to internet meet you i just like almost built my whole glass of rosé all over my computer and that would have been really bad um kate tell me more i mean living with
Starting point is 00:04:32 a new boyfriend in quarantine um how i mean okay so we're not brand new it's not like we were seeing each other for three weeks and we're like oh shit just got real let's partner up so because safety and numbers or whatever um we had been dating like just about six months we're long distance he's from new york and i'm from uh california and i live in l a so when like everything basically shut down so i guess that would have been the 11th or 12th of march um he was visiting he was here and we had like a day to be like okay what are we going to do are you going to go home am i going to go with you are you going to stay here and of course you know i'm like you should stay here. My place is bigger. New York is New York. And there's just more space in L.A. It's,
Starting point is 00:05:24 you know, a neighborhood. We can walk around. And there was a few hours, though. I thought he was going to leave. I thought he was going to go back. And I was like, I mean, I get it. You can't, you know, I can't ask you not to go home. Right. But luckily, he decided to stay. And, you know, I mean, I would love to say, like, oh, it's so crazy. Like, we're not getting along at all and be very funny about it. But we're having a great time. I mean, obviously, like, we're bickering about dumb stuff. Like, I think every- That's a relationship.
Starting point is 00:05:54 That's a relationship, not during a pandemic. But, like, now that there's a pandemic, you're fighting about really dumb stuff where you're like, did you take off your gloves and not wash them? Like, we have to reuse those. Like, did you, did you lice all this can of beans before you put it away? Like, just the craziest shit that we'd have never expected to be arguing about. but other than that I mean again we are used to being long distance so we went from like missing each other all the time to now we're the only people we don't miss yeah seriously well that's
Starting point is 00:06:27 good because that is a really great test for a relationship especially do you say six months in yeah six months in I feel like six months is a really pivotal time for a relationship like you're either like I hate you or like we could really do this yeah zig or zag or dude it's absolutely that I mean, we're lucky because, like, he is, like, my best friend. Like, we hang out and we have a great time and we're, we're pretty compatible just as, like, people. Um, and, like, he's also a comedian. So it's, it's just fun that I'm with somebody that I can, you know, like, we started a movie podcast and we're just, like, doing dumb videos online. Like, we're, we're doing everything we can to stay busy and distracted.
Starting point is 00:07:08 Um, because right now, like, obviously we can't perform or anything. So, yeah, that is one thing that, um, love about social media and that right now is that like imagine this when when we didn't have this form of entertainment i mean we'd probably be reading books and being smarter but like it's it's nice to like be able to for comedians um musicians um certain people that are able to kind of entertain us through podcasts or uh instagram lives or stories and stuff so um that's cool that you guys are able to do that and you said he's a comedian too he's a comedian yeah Yeah, yeah, his name's Sam Morrell. He's very funny. Yeah, I mean, the other day I was like, Taylor, be grateful. At least you have Wi-Fi. Like, you have all this content. And then the Wi-Fi went out for three hours. Oh, shit. And I was like, this is the Oregon Trail now. Like, if it doesn't come back in the next hour, like, we are screwed. This, I will eat you. Like, I don't even care if I have to do. I will do it. Like, I cannot stress you how quickly I started panic. when there was no internet.
Starting point is 00:08:17 It's so funny what we take for granted or certain things. Like I would lose my mind too if there was no Wi-Fi or any way of having an internet. I don't know why this just came to my mind now because it is so random. But why? I guess I'm thinking about things that people would freak out about if they didn't have. Why are people freaking out about toilet paper if the coronavirus doesn't make you shit? I don't know. I think people are just nervous about things running out in general and not why.
Starting point is 00:08:44 wanting to leave their house and everybody poops as we know so i mean i'm guessing that's what it is but i mean yeah i kind of felt the same way because that was the first thing to go first thing i'm like what all the dawn soap that is so legit just sitting there like but toilet paper is gone i'm like i don't get it like there's so many other means to toilet paper too i mean there's Kleenex there's napkins there's paper towel i don't know it just to me it was something that's still like you know that's the shit i think about during this i mean when we run out of toilet paper and we're getting there i'm just going to order takeout and order like all the napkins all the napkins yeah right or you just have to get in the shower every time you poop which i mean i'm not above it i'm not either i'm not above
Starting point is 00:09:34 anything anymore i know i'm not above there's a lot of things i'm doing now where i wouldn't have done but like it's such an easy blame to say while we're in quarantine or the corona so really like what what's like the biggest thing that you've done you're like like drinking before noon oh yeah yeah like like having a glass of wine with breakfast i'm like i keep saying it's like airport hours like with totally acceptable or creating a tic-tok i was always chirping ticot being like oh it's so dumb like it's for 12 year olds and now i'm like i'm a savage and like doing all the moves like totally into it so i but i'm like well you know what? We're cooped up because of Corona. So I blame Corona for me getting a TikTok account. I mean, honestly, I'm, I'm watching like all of my comedian friends also like trying to pivot
Starting point is 00:10:20 and do like sketches or like podcasts or videos or TikToks. And it's like nobody's judging anyone. Like before all of this, I feel like people were a little more judgmental where they were like, you're making a TikTok. That's pretty stupid. Or like, you're going to dance on Instagram at your age. And now it's like, nope, I'm just happy people are making things that will distract me from my fear. Yes, exactly. Oh, my gosh. What is your biggest fear through this right now? Like, are you, when you go out to the store, are you like, or do you even go to the store?
Starting point is 00:10:52 Oh, yeah. We go to the grocery store like maybe once a week or so. And it's like, we have kitchen gloves and the kind of like, we're just like rewashing and sanitizing them in between. and we have like some masks like the ones you're not supposed to reuse but we are because everybody's like just wear a mask um so we go I mean we're in there and we like we get separate carts we split up like we're in and out trying to to be as efficient as possible we also have gotten things delivered but I mean that's getting so hard like there's like no I know I know I went on the Instacart the other day it was like an eight day wait for a delivery I was like
Starting point is 00:11:31 shit okay um but yeah Jason my boyfriend's been really great about going to the grocery store and doing that whole thing. But anyways, let's talk, let's get off the COVID to train for a minute. It's like 45 minutes of us just talking about how shitty it is. So you have a Netflix special. How, I mean, to me, that's like a dream to say I have a Netflix special. I think as a comedian, too, that's just like you're obviously super proud of it. So can we talk about that for a second and just how that came to be?
Starting point is 00:11:59 Sure, absolutely. Yeah, my special quarter life crisis came out on Netflix, March 3rd. so like just under the wire for all of this um which is so funny i've done so many interviews where people are like hey at least everyone's at home watching netflix and i'm like i don't think netflix needed this bump like i feel like netflix was fine yeah um yeah so i i submitted the hour to netflix um i guess about a year before it came out so February uh 2019 what year is Is it? It's 2020? Okay. So 2019, there's no time anymore. In 2019, and I had already done the comedy lineup on Netflix the year before, which was the series of like 15-minute mini specials where they kind of showcased a bunch of upcoming comedians. So naturally, I thought like the next step was doing a half hour, which they also have called the stand-ups, which is a different series review 30 minutes. And I was hoping for that. But I was headlining on the road. So I was doing an hour in clubs. So I had an hour filmed at the Helium Comedy Club in Portland, Oregon. And we just
Starting point is 00:13:12 sent that in. And after a few months, they got back to us and we're like, no, we want to do the full hour. And then a few months after that, we filmed it in Portland at the Aladdin Theater in November. That's where I did my podcast tour show when I went to Portland. I did it at the Aladdin Theater. It's such a great theater. I love it. It is. Yeah. Oh, so that's where it was filmed? Mm-hmm. Oh, amazing. Yeah. You can't tell because they like, you know, they work their lighting, magic and it looks incredible. Though we are apart these days, we're sharing more and Geico would just like to say
Starting point is 00:13:49 thanks. Thanks for sharing your savage dance moves. Thanks for sharing your DIY haircut fails and thanks for sharing your inner lip sync star. Now it's Guyco's turn to share two with the GEICO give back, a 15% credit on car and motorcycle policies for current and new customers. And because GEICO's committed for the long haul, the 15% credit lasts your full policy term. Visit GEICO.com slash give back for info and eligibility. Learn more about GEICO's 15% credit on car and motorcycle policies at GEICO.com slash give back. You started doing stand-up in high school, is that right? Yeah, it's not a cool.
Starting point is 00:14:30 story. Oh, do you not like talking about it? Oh, no, no, no, I'll talk about it. It's just like, it's such a nerdy way to start comedy. My dad, when I was a junior in high school, wanted to take a stand-up comedy class together at a church from a church comedian. And so we took that for like six to eight weeks. And I started opening for that guy. I started doing like churches and fundraisers and schools and like really anywhere that wasn't a comedy club because I wasn't of age. And so I was just started doing that until I was like 18. And then once I was 18, I started to doing clubs in San Diego. How do you do stand-up in a church?
Starting point is 00:15:05 Because I feel like a big part of stand-up is being a little bit more off-side or having, you know, like, in my opinion, I guess you could, but what was that like to do stand-up in a church? I mean, I was starting when I was 16, so I didn't have a ton of life experience and, like, I hadn't had sex yet. Like, I, there was- That's true. You had 16-year-old humor. Yeah, I mean, it was like, I didn't go to prom this year and I'm kind of ugly.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Like, it was so stupid. It was just insecure jokes and jokes about my family and whatnot. I didn't have any church jokes, but a lot of guys who play churches do. I mean, you just have to be super clean. Like, doing the Tonight Show is very similar. Yeah, like you can't swear and you can't have any innuendo and you can't talk about anything too dark. That's true.
Starting point is 00:15:53 I didn't think about that. Yeah, I guess that's fair. Yeah, it's like a good way to start for sure because it's harder to write clean. than it is to write dirty. So I think when you start that way, it kind of helps you from, it keeps you from developing those bad habits of just like leaning on the shock value. Um, plus you're performing for way more people than you should and like sometimes getting paid for it. And you're like, I'm not a person yet. This is so stupid. Um, which honestly, I still feel like, we were filming the Netflix special. I was like, they're going to let me talk for how long? Are they sure?
Starting point is 00:16:23 I feel that way too sometimes. Right. It's like, uh, the imposter syndrome is so real. Um, but Yeah, I mean, it was a weird, it was a weird beginning for sure. And then I didn't even go to a comedy club, even to watch anything until I was 18. And once I did, I was like, oh, this is where comedy is supposed to happen. Right. Because you grew up with a pretty religious background. So when you, when did you decide to make that transition? Was it in that time when you started being able to go to comedy clubs to kind of go from being, you know, safe humor to diving more into topics that you do on your Netflix special?
Starting point is 00:16:55 I was still pretty, I was like very clean up until. maybe like five, four or five years ago. Oh, yeah? Yeah. And then once I got to like 21, 22, I, I was just like, you know what? I don't know that I can keep doing this because I wasn't sure how I felt about my own faith and I wasn't, I didn't, they want you to be that. Like, it's not just like they hire somebody who can be clean and then they are fine if they go do whatever they want in clubs. Like, they want you to be clean 100% of the time. And there were other things I wanted to talk about and other topics I wanted to explore and um when you're doing churches it is so you are so like under a microscope not just when you're performing there but like if there's a
Starting point is 00:17:39 video that gets put up on YouTube where you say a swear word even if it's not that bad like someone from the church could find that and send an email to whoever and I was like I don't know that I can live like this yeah it's a little restrictive yeah for the rest of my life so at a certain point I just told my my manager, I was like, you got to stop sending me offers to do churches. And it only took a few more times. And I'm like, but it's this much money. I'm like, I can't do it. I didn't even realize that was a thing. I didn't even realize that that churches did that. Yeah. And you can make so much money doing it. It's a very lucrative market because there's so few people who can do it. But yeah, they do comedy nights. Oh, that's, well, I mean, that's great. But I just, I guess I just didn't know because I'd never heard of
Starting point is 00:18:23 that um and what i mean how old are you right now 25 i'm 26 very mature but for 26 like you i know you talk about that on your on your special kind of about the age and life experience um do you feel do you feel like um you are mature for your age with your life experiences i don't know people have been telling me i'm mature for my age since i was like nine years old, which I feel like is just a fun way of saying, like, you're, you're not that cool to hang out with the parties, like, just saying you're like, you're an old soul. It's like, you mean I'm a loser? Like, no, I always wanted to be an old soul. Everyone, I was always the immature one that people always think is younger than, like, I'm 34 and people always think I'm in my early 20s,
Starting point is 00:19:12 which I'll take, but also I think they're saying that I'm immature. No, that's just because you're hot. That has nothing to do with your behavior. Shut. Shut the fuck. I'm 34. Everyone always thinks I'm in my 20s because I'm so immature. No, you're beautiful. That's why everyone thinks that. No, I wasn't.
Starting point is 00:19:30 I really think I am immature for my age though with my like family guy. I freaking love family guy and I still like to watch cartoons and like eat cereal and like get drunk before noon. Well, and now you have a TikTok. And now I have a TikTok.
Starting point is 00:19:45 This is not what 34 year olds should be doing. But you did. I mean, that's crazy at 20. you have your own Netflix special you've you've had all these life experiences you've toured with Conan that's crazy I love my God it's so crazy I have like I have a poster you probably can't see it there's a poster on my wall that he signed and like he signed posters and sent it to everybody who was on tour with him but yeah if you had told me when I was like 12 that I was going to be on a private jet with Conan O'Brien at a certain point I would have been like that's one of those
Starting point is 00:20:17 times you just sit there like what is this do I wake up? soon what's happening this is insane and he's so cool and nice and funny yeah i i've loved conan for years i used to watch him in high school like to fall asleep at night i loved him and then he was i was presenting an award at the um i heart podcast awards and he was there and he like walked by me backstage and i literally did this and smelled his shoulder like or i mean i guess it was basically like his elbow for me but like i sniffed him Who does that? I don't blame you.
Starting point is 00:20:53 I really don't. Like, that was my first instinct to, well, not to say hello, like a normal human. I wasn't like, hey, really like, you know, love your work. I sniffed his elbow. Honestly, hearing this story just makes me wish I had thought to smell him because I was close enough to do so and I wasted my shot. Yeah, you did. I'm here to tell you he smelled great.
Starting point is 00:21:16 Of course he does. He looks like he'd smell great. Yeah. You know, you could tell certain people. there you'd be like they don't smell good he's not one of them no he looks very clean he yes he looks like he well you shared a private jet with him that is a flex that's cool i mean it wasn't my brother jet it was not really a flex i feel i felt like a stow away i was like are they gonna kick me out with a parachute on my back do i go on the undercarriage like where the dogs go in a crate
Starting point is 00:21:42 yeah i'm like can i sit here they're like you can sit wherever i'm like it's not assigned seating like southwest okay that was i went on one private jet once and I remember going to all the way I was like oh I'm going to take the back corner I don't know how to ride a private jet it's not something I do all the time and the pilot laughed at me and he was like you want to sit in the power seat and I was like oh what the hell is the power seat and it's I guess where you control like the air conditioning and like certain things but I'm like well I don't know you act like I do this all the time but there's a power seat just so you know for next time when you have your own private jet I'll be like where's
Starting point is 00:22:16 the power seat yeah no you can't ask that you have to know where the power is know where it is? Yeah, front right. I'll just, I'll go, I know where it is, but I'm testing all of you to make sure you're a, you're a worthy crew. I'm pretty sure that Conan was probably in the power seat. So just remember where he sat and go there. Okay, that's good.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Yeah, he definitely was. Yeah, because I'm pretty sure you will have your own private jet one day. You have your own Netflix special. Like, that's so freaking cool. So tell me, I mean, speaking of the Netflix special, when finding, out that they were giving you this quarter life crisis special, were you so nervous or did you feel like you pretty much had spent your entire career preparing for something like this? I mean, both. I spent about 10 minutes being very excited and being like, oh, my God,
Starting point is 00:23:09 I can't believe my dream came true. I'm so happy. And then after that initial 10 minutes, I started spiraling and panicking and just ended up, you know, crying like oh my god i'm not i don't deserve it and i mean again the imposter syndrome is so real and i absolutely felt that way i felt like i know so many people who didn't get this opportunity who i feel like are more experienced or deserved it more than i did and and at a certain point i mean you know you're in the same business like none of this is fair really like i have no business doing this that's not what I meant but you know what I mean I wasn't like I mean you know not fair um I'm talking about myself but I it is true like anybody in this business who has an ounce of self-awareness
Starting point is 00:23:58 knows that to make it in show business you have to be super hardworking super talented and really lucky like you can't you can't not be lucky and and make it I mean everybody is trying to do it and there are just more talented hardworking people than there are spots um i think the internet and social media has helped with that a lot because it's much easier to find your own audience but yeah i mean i i really i really broke down after i got the news for a minute and then once i sort of gathered myself i was like you know what all you can do now is work as hard as you can to be worthy of the opportunities you've been given and to waste your time being scared and nervous and beating yourself up is it's just it's a waste and it's sort of at a certain point a little
Starting point is 00:24:51 ungrateful and and a little disrespectful to people who would kill for this opportunity so all you can do is hunker down and do the best you can with what you've been given and stay like humble and grateful and remember that you're very lucky yes i agree staying humble is everything and and i think i remember um my boyfriend had this other guy who was um a past bachelor colton And he was talking about how everyone's always like, well, you're just so lucky. You always get like these lucky situations and things fall into your lap. And he's like, he gets mad when people say that because it's like you also put yourself in the position to have luck.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Like, you know, like you, you're putting yourself out there and doing like being a comedian is, in my opinion, I feel like that that's frightening to put yourself out there like that for a lot of people. Even for people think comedians, all you, you know, you've got this big personality and this is easy for you. but it's not for some. And you put yourself in the position to get that luck. So you do deserve it.
Starting point is 00:25:46 And I totally understand how you feel because we all are so hard on ourselves. But you've put yourself in the position to be lucky. So good for you. Oh, thank you. Yeah. I think you're absolutely right. I mean, anybody in this business who has carved out a space for themselves, you're right, has absolutely had to put themselves out there and has had to work hard
Starting point is 00:26:04 and in maybe ways you don't even know about or understand because you don't see what's going on behind the scenes for everybody. So you've probably heard a lot of people, including myself, talk about how crucial their morning routine is to setting the right tone for their day, whether that's waking up early, journaling, exercising, meditating, or anything else. But not everyone has the time to do it all. With hydrant, you can jumpstart your mornings to avoid the morning's sluggishness and that midday slump. You need to make sure you're hydrated. Right after your Netflix special came out, you posted on your social media, a really raw picture. And the caption, basically, it was talking about how you suffered a panic attack and not everything
Starting point is 00:28:41 is always as it seems. You are really open with your anxiety. I also am the same way. I'm really big about talking about going to therapy, about suffering from anxiety. Because I think, and I've also talked about being on medication because I think, one, it's important for people to feel safe around that. And two, it's like you can still be a happy, fun, funny person while suffering from those things too it's it's just like part of life for a lot of people um i think that's really amazing that
Starting point is 00:29:11 you did that so um what what happens like what what do you what triggers your anxiety or is it just general oh my gosh i mean it's everything it's it's general and it's triggered i mean i'm also on medication i don't i think i'm technically on a mood stabilizer because antidepressants didn't quite agree with me because you know it's a lot of trial and error are you the same yes it did really awful things to me when I tried really yes see me too I had one that like gave me like some sort of heart thing like where I was my chest was in pain like it's nuts it's yeah no the side effects are real I I was like dizzy getting like night sweats I was feeling like so much more depressed like it was real I went like into a really dark place from this one that's like
Starting point is 00:29:59 pretty pretty common for people to take oh my gosh that sounds horrible that's like the worst case scenario yeah like my first one made me sleep for like 16 hours a day and I was like this is I can't do this like I can't do my job which made me panic even more because you're you know you can't stay awake yeah um yeah I mean for me it it it is triggered about a lot of different things I'm I have like a huge fear of abandonment I'm afraid of losing people I love I lost a parent really young so I'm always kind of like expecting important people in my life to die or disappear or whatever it is so that's probably my big one i mean i have really bad um i mean they're they're essentially unchecked they're like night tears where i like wake up screaming and it's just like a mess um
Starting point is 00:30:45 and i was having them on the road when i was traveling and and having these dreams that took place inside the hotel room i fell asleep in and then they were so vivid that when i woke up i didn't know if i was still dreaming or not like just crazy stuff um which now i take like edibles at night to sleep because weirdly enough like TH, do you do this? I have. Yeah, it helps me sleep so much. It's crazy. And apparently THC like inhibits dreaming or something because even the stuff that I could get prescribed to me that would make me sleep wouldn't stop me from dreaming. It would just put me to sleep. Oh, so, okay, so the THC helps you not have these night terrors. Yeah, as far as I can understand. That's interesting. I, okay, I can't relate to the night terrors, but I can totally relate to
Starting point is 00:31:32 very very vivid dreams where I wake up and don't know if I'm still like in it or not this is so random and not to like take away from the the topic and to make light of it but I woke myself up in the middle of the night last night singing happy birthday to myself like what I was literally saying happy birthday and I and when I woke up I was still seeing it and I felt like I was still there so I had to finish so I continued to see oh my gosh that's so cute I That's hilarious. It's so random. I just remember that right now.
Starting point is 00:32:06 And this morning I asked Jason, I was like, did you hear me saying happy birthday to myself? And he was like, no, because he's a deep sleeper. But anyways, so yeah, THC, I didn't know that that helps with that. That's a good note for anybody out there who is suffering who might be into trying that kind of thing. Yeah, I didn't know either until I started taking a friend of mine had said you should try edibles to sleep at night. Because I also like the anxiety about having nightmares and just generalized anxiety will make it difficult to sleep. until you have insomnia and then you get stuff to put you to sleep but then the nightmares are still there and she just recommended it for for sleep and I realize once I realized it was the only thing
Starting point is 00:32:40 that was working I was reading about it and and there were all these articles that say THC is what helps I live in Tennessee so it's very difficult for me to get any kind of thing like that and I'm yeah we had um um like a edible chocolate bar but I'd rip through that because it really does help me sleep too um my my anxiety happens um middle of the night a lot of times. So I do like something like that that's not like a sleeping pill, but something that can help me. But yeah, Tennessee, it's not legal. Oh, that sucks so hard. I mean, we can get it delivered here, which is a dream come through. God, you give me so many reasons to be grateful. I'm so sorry. Yeah, I was putting it off because at first I didn't know
Starting point is 00:33:24 that they were going to stay open, the dispensaries. And once we realized that they were staying open. I was like, oh, I could probably like get some weed delivered. And there's only been one night that I got really high, but it was after a few days of being kind of depressed and sad. And I was like, I should have done this forever ago. I mean, but you get high for a couple hours and you're like, this is awesome, but then you just get really sleepy. Yeah. Probably because you're not anxious anymore. You're just like, your body's like, oh, now we can rest. Totally. No, that is exactly what it is. Like two hours and then you like have the deepest sleep of your life. Oh, it's. So nice. I mean, once we did it, I turned to my boyfriend that night. And I was just like, can I talk to you about something? And he was like, yeah, what's up? He thought I was mad at him. And he goes, he goes, yeah, what is it? And I was like, can we get high and eat pasta and watch like a dumb movie? And he was like, I thought I was in trouble. Yeah, of course. Like, yeah, that sounds great. That's a perfect date night in if you ask me. It is. We doesn't agree with him, though, which is kind of a bummer. But does it make him anxious? Because I feel like a lot.
Starting point is 00:34:30 of people it does the opposite it does it makes him really really anxious so he he got he got high with me one night and he was kind of like okay just sort of he's like let me just you know keep myself grounded here it was it's not as relaxing as an experience for him which is so sad because it's like the only thing that makes me feel uh normal sometimes what about wine do you drink wine at all I don't drink at all because I have a lot of alcoholism and both sides of my family and because yeah well just because I'm a comedian and I'm alone in hotel rooms all the time, which is like the only time I've been like, should I drink, which is when you're not supposed to do it, when you're all by yourself. So I just feel like I might have the sort of addictive personality that it could be
Starting point is 00:35:15 a problem for. That's really great that you have that self power to not even go there. Yeah, I just don't want to go there. And who knows? I mean, I was scared to try weed to for a long time but like I'm not I'm not super I don't overdo it with weed I don't do that every day I mean I have a clonopin prescription I was nervous about that and I I don't I hardly ever take it um so I could just be overly um overly cautious about it but it was always something for me growing up also very religious that I was like I don't know if it's worth finding out if that is a problem for me right yeah that's fair that's fair good for you um and you have a podcast um that's called self helpless right um and it's you and three other comedians so um do you love doing a podcast because
Starting point is 00:36:07 i feel like i feel like comedians for them to just have a microphone and be with other comedians just sitting around with like no audience and no like i feel like that would be something that you'd really thrive in oh yeah absolutely i mean Kelsey and delaney and i Kelsey cook and Delaney Fisher. We all met doing stand-up. And we started working together. We were trying to like write a script together. And during that, we decided to do a podcast about self-help because we're, you know, three white girls. We were in our, we were all in our 20s at the time. Um, they both just turned 30. But it was like, we're all like, oh, we're comedians. We'll make fun of self-help and it'll be hilarious. And then we, the further we've gotten into it,
Starting point is 00:36:48 it's just gotten more and more sincere where we're like, no, I think this actually, helps um you guys like the first episode is us just making fun of the tony robin's documentary and then it immediately goes into like kelsey really believes in feng shui she really believes in it and like we're we're just we're pretty we're pretty into what we talk about now i mean we've had listeners on the show talk about their personal experiences we've had doctors and nutritionists and other comedians and like just all kinds of people because self-help is such a broad topic and like self-improve is something that everybody's into in some way, even if they don't think they are. So it's just endless amounts of episodes of material for us. So the way I describe it is like, hopefully listening
Starting point is 00:37:34 to Self-Halpless is like going to brunch with three of your girlfriends who all read a book that you wanted to, but you don't want to sit down and actually read. And then they just kind of give you the highlights and they're much more entertaining about it. Yeah, that's perfect. The highlight real. I like that. All right. Let's take a moment. I know you're definitely familiar by now with Caldrea, which is absolutely one of my favorite brands, I've talked about their hand care products, their cleaning products, and their air care, which fills my home pretty much all the time recently. Caldrea is a consciously crafted home and body care brand that combines thoughtful ingredients with incredible sense, making caring for ourselves and our
Starting point is 00:38:11 homes a beautiful experience. So their hand care products includes both hand soaps and moisturizing lotions that are so effective, smell incredible. They're formulated using a combination of essential oils from flowers and herbs plus other thoughtful ingredients. Now, obviously, we know how important it is to wash our hands, and you're about to be washing them even more often than you already do because of these products, I promise. I wash my hands now and kind of for fun. That sounds so crazy, but I'm serious. I've absolutely been loving the ginger pomelo scent, which is so warm, bright, makes me feel like I'm in a spa, even though I'm just in my kitchen or bathroom. And if you haven't tried Caldrea's products yet, trust me,
Starting point is 00:38:52 you're going to love the way they feel and the way they smell. Get free shipping on orders of $50 or more when you buy online at caldraia.com. That's c-a-d-r-a-com and visit caldraia.com and add wonder to your washing. What's your favorite thing to do for self-help? Ooh, I mean, I won't say weed because we already talked about that a lot. And that's not what I go to first. But yeah, I mean, I feel like it's been really hard. having gyms closed and stuff because I hate running outside more than anything. And I know I'm
Starting point is 00:39:28 complaining because we have YouTube videos and stuff. But if you're in an apartment building, you also worry about making too much noise. And I feel like exercise is really important, especially when you're traveling and you're on the road. So we've talked about different things with like exercise on the podcast. I think I had like food issues growing up. And once I got those under control like it that was really helpful just I had I had read so many things I had done like a bunch of different diets I had like got and then you get really um you get like addicted to doing different types of like diets or fads and then that becomes its own problem whereas like when you were a kid you just ate really unhealthy and that was the issue so then you overcorrect and
Starting point is 00:40:15 then I read this book called intuitive eating when I was in college I don't know if you've read that Have you read it? No, but one of my girlfriends is, she's the founder of this thing called Raw Beauty Talks, and I just had her on my podcast, and she's big into intuitive eating. Yeah, I mean, it's so simple. Like, we read it on the podcast, and Kelsey and Delaney were not as affected as I was with it. But yeah, for me, it was crazy that reading a whole book that was basically just like, eat things that are going to make you feel good.
Starting point is 00:40:48 And you're like, oh, that's all I have to do. I just have to think about how is this going to make me feel, and it totally simplified everything for me in such a weird way where I'm like, okay, so if I want to have cake, I just know that I'll feel like shit, and then I probably won't do it. And then if I want to feel good, I guess I'll go eat kale and that'll do it. Like, it's, it's so simple and it's crazy that I needed to read a book for that. But that's just how studious I am that I'm like, I need to see it in print before I stop eating cake that's it you should follow um raw beauty talks because they do um a lot of self help self love like um certain things like that that are so important that simplify so many things that
Starting point is 00:41:31 people make complicated oh my god i would love to i'm going to do it right now do it she's so awesome and um she's created a really really cool platform for that um through through all different things body image self-help like self-care um everything it's really it's really a cool cool place um cool place to be on the internet you know like you hot tip you know like you scroll and you get annoyed she's one of those refreshing ones where you're like thank god i saw that today i needed that yes oh that's such a good endorsement of an instagram account like don't you feel like you want to just clean house on Instagram right now. Because you don't have to see anybody. Yeah. I have done an Instagram cleanup recently where I'm like, this is not bringing me joy. I need to like remove
Starting point is 00:42:18 myself. It's my choice who I follow. Yeah. Yeah. It's it's a good thing to do in quarantine because we're scrolling a lot. Absolutely. And I think the fear is usually like, oh, if I unfollow this person from work, I'm going to see them. Right. And they're going to be annoyed. They're going to notice. And now it's like, who cares? I mean, mean, this has really put everything in perspective for me where I'm like, I am not wasting time on anything that doesn't make me happy ever again. It's true. I do think that this time has been good for perspective. Yeah. Yeah. And how grateful is everyone going to be when we come out of this too? I mean, I miss airports. Really? I miss airports. And I travel all the time. I was so
Starting point is 00:43:01 exhausted before this all happened. I was like, I need a break. I just. just need to hide for a while. And then this happened and I was like, okay, universe, this is not what I meant. And if I did this, I'm so sorry. I will never complain about getting on an airplane ever again. I will only be very excited. That was, that was me. I was feeling just so run down. And I'm like, if I have to see another airport or be on another plane, like, I'm going to lose my mind. I just need some sort of normalcy and be at home and like recharge my batteries. And now I'm like, they are recharged. I am ready to go. Yeah. But I'm nervous about when it comes back to the real world of people being afraid of one another. Like everyone's going to, it'll be a transition, obviously,
Starting point is 00:43:44 slowly, but surely I think it will get back. But it just worries me because like even today, I had to go get something from the post office. And everyone's just like, like, you don't want to hold doors open for anyone. You don't want to touch it. You don't want to be around people that I feel like we're going to live in fear for a little while coming out of this. I think so. Yeah, I mean, I don't know because on the one hand, I think everybody's going to be so anxious to get out and connect with people and see everybody once we get out of this. I mean, even going to like the grocery store, everybody's nervous now, but you do see people like making jokes to each other and, and, you know, like the first day we went grocery shopping. There was some guy in the aisle was like, we got to laugh or we'd all cry, right? And you're like, oh, that's true. Like you just all those, I think people are. absolutely using humor right now, like, because what else are you going to do? I mean, that guy was right in the vitamin aisle. Like, we have to laugh or we'll all cry every day. That's actually a really good point. And I do see a lot of humor coming out through this, like, you know,
Starting point is 00:44:51 on the memes and everything going around. We all know the big penis man that's been floating around and like people are finding you know ways to to stay um have their humor during all of this so that's that is a plus there's always silver lining so that's true okay so i've got a quick quick game for you before i let you go it's not a game it's just rapid fire questions i'm just i always try and make a game out of everything um okay so just rapid yeah rapid fire tell me the truth weirdest place you've ever gone to the bathroom Oh, I don't know. I don't know that I've ever, oh, you know what? I went camping once in like fifth grade and I had to go in the middle of the night and it was so dark that I just got outside the tent and just like squatted by the tent. And of course, you just, you're a lady, so you pee all over everything. And so then I just had like these like wet pajamas. I just had to like put in a corner of the tent until the stench became too much. And I was like, I should probably put these outside. Like, you know, I do not care for camping. I don't think I've camped since then. And it's, like, because I am so traumatized by that.
Starting point is 00:46:00 I weirdly love camping and peeing in the woods, just like I feel so free. Really? Even in like the middle of the night? I mean, I don't love that, but I just, everything else about camping, I love the camping experience. I'm so weird like that. I really love it. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:46:16 Yeah, I admire you, your outdoorsy spirit. Peeing outside in pitch black darkness is more vulnerable than I ever want to feel. See, I find it liberating. Okay, last thing you Google searched. Ooh, I don't know. Let me check. It's probably like, who is Caitlin Bristow? I mean, you're always like Googling news stuff. Yes. Yeah, it's probably anything like that you've Googled is probably like just, you know,
Starting point is 00:46:46 anything that could be funny is probably a drown in media news info. I did Google like foods to eat to prevent UTIs. I'm so scared of getting one in quarantine. Oh my gosh, that's a good point. Getting one in quarantine would be hell. Dude, I'm, I've had a recurrent one, like, since December that I will like, it will like kind of come and go and I, like, the last few days I had been feeling like I was like on the verge.
Starting point is 00:47:19 Like once you, once you have one and it like comes back a couple months later and you have to do antibiotics again, you're like, okay. I have to be so careful moving forward. This is so gross. But like, whatever, it's real. And I ordered a bunch of supplements. Like, I mean, there's all kinds of stuff online. Yeah, no.
Starting point is 00:47:38 I'm, no, no, no. This is like, if you're going to talk about any of the real stuff, it's on this podcast. I always, I have like, people know too much about me at this point from this, from this podcast. But, and then everyone talks about cranberry pills. I'm like, cranberry pills are bullshit. They don't do anything. I don't know if they do or not.
Starting point is 00:47:54 Yeah. like I saw a doctor who I was like I mean I was like I take cranberry supplements every day and he's like I mean that's fine I'm like okay so that's bull and he's like I don't know it might help like he I don't even think he knew it's also hard to see a male doctor about UTIs because chances are they haven't had one oh they don't know how bad it is so they're kind of like yeah you just take this and fine and if you still feel it just come back and you're like I don't think you understand like I slept with an ice pack between my legs last night like this is real yeah it's super real and super terrible yeah yeah okay well good vibes coming your way no no uti's thank you so much feeling strong feeling good um one thing that people probably don't know about you oh one thing people don't know about me i don't know if there's anything people don't know about me because as a stand-up comedian you're so i mean you're probably the same way you're like i'm so open um as like my career is just to be honest and overshare so i don't know if I have anything like it's always hard doing interviews or podcasts or shows or whatever where they're
Starting point is 00:49:00 like do you have anything you've never told anyone and I'm like I do not yeah I have absolutely nothing that I never told anyone and because you're with a comedian as a boyfriend he probably is the same way where my boyfriend is very conservative and like doesn't overshare so he's like he'll be on a podcast with me and be like oh my god you're talking about your bush right now to like the world and I'm like yeah why not like it doesn't bother me at all yeah no he and I are both and I don't know I think Sam is a little better at being private than I am in certain ways and then in certain ways I think I'm a little better but yeah we're both definitely like comics so we we absolutely overshare yeah I'm a big fan of the oversharing I it's just relatable um okay favorite moment of your career so far
Starting point is 00:49:50 oh i mean filming the netflix special of course like filming quarter life crisis was like a dream come true everything went perfectly i got to choose everything i mean i got to choose my outfit and the location and the set design like i i got to approve everything and so when it finally came time to film it, it just felt like good. I just felt prepared and ready and excited to do it. So that was a really cool night. That's a good feeling. What's your favorite bit that you do on the whole series? Ooh, my favorite bit in the hour is the gobstopper joke, which is in the trailer as well. Yeah. So if you go watch quarter life crisis on Netflix, you can see the gobstopper joke. It's not too far in too so if you just want to see that if you just watch the trailer you'll see it yeah no because if
Starting point is 00:50:50 they watch the trailer they're going to want to watch the whole thing it's hilarious um well you are really funny that netflix special is hilarious and i love that you're also really um raw and open and vulnerable about real life too and not just you know just like oh i'm a happy comedian i love that you're raw and real and share anxiety and are aware of mental health and make other people feel comfortable for for talking about it too so thank you for that and thank you for being on the podcast today to talk about that. Oh, thank you so much. Thank you for having me.
Starting point is 00:51:18 This was so fun. Of course. I know I looked at my time and I'm like, how has it already been 45 minutes? That's crazy. And where can everybody find? I mean, besides Netflix, obviously, you Instagram, that kind of thing. TikTok. I am on TikTok also.
Starting point is 00:51:33 I do not run it, but someone runs it for me. I'm at, I think I'm Taylor Tomlinson comedy on TikTok. I'm pretty sure. And then I'm at Taylor Tomlinson on Twitter and Instagram. My website's t-Tom Comedy.com. that'll just send you to all of those other things. Yeah, exactly. Because once everything's all, you know, this crazy time is all set and done,
Starting point is 00:51:53 you'll probably go on tour again. Yeah, I mean, I certainly hope so. That's what we're planning for. So, yeah, I mean, live dates are, you know, kind of up in the air right now, but we do have them for, you know, the summer and fall. So we'll see what happens with that. In the meantime, yeah, Sam and I are doing this, like, mini web series called new couple gets quarantined, which you can watch on our Instagrams. We started a new
Starting point is 00:52:18 podcast called This Is Important to Me, where we do that new couple thing where we show each other all of our favorite movies that the other person hasn't seen. And yes, I'm going to make him watch 13 going on 30. I mean, come on. This is very important to me. And then my other podcast, self-helpless. Awesome. You got a lot going on. And I just appreciate your time. And good luck to the rest of your time in quarantine and uh we'll see you on the road next time you're out there thank you so much uh stay safe and congrats on your wine thank you ha ha ha ha i will always hey you know what i have my own wine label so i feel like that's also acceptable oh my gosh that is that was a flex for sure that was a hard one too not even a subtle it was like and and i pulled it into the frame and
Starting point is 00:53:06 everything like yeah if you're just listening to the podcast i am bowing i am i am i am i am physically bowing. I'm going to end it on that note with you bowing down to me. All right, everybody. Thanks for listening to Oscar Vine with Caitlin Briscoe.
