that was leaked by Deserdo e-sports that says that Activision. Let me bring it up, Matt. I want to read a word for word. So what it says here, can we see the tweet, Matt? Thank you for the article. The tweet says, The Cal of Degree League is signing a new YouTube exclusivity deal starting for the 2023-2020 season.

Sources have told Deserto. The Call of Duty League will broadcast exclusively on YouTube for two years. Now, I had to come out and defend Activision on this one, because this is simply not true. Next week, as we sit here today, next week right before Champs, I don't know which day or the week. I think it's early in the week.

We have an owner's meeting in which we're going to discuss whether or not we are going to be doing this. So I am here to say that from what I know, this is untrue, although the conversation is still going on, is not necessarily the truth because next week,

all the owners are going to be meeting there and we're all going to be saying our part. My contention, my thoughts is that if we continue, if we move from Twitch, we're toast. That shit's going to die. We're fucking toast. Huh? And I need you to let me know if any of the owners in that meeting raise their hand for this deal.

Yeah, let's do it. I don't know. I will never call out. Publicly out them. Yeah, it's just like fucking, like you know how the cod burner was leaking rosters? I'm leaking owners. Say yes, this guy said this. Fucking Ultra watch this.

This guy's sick. Yep. they're heading for this. So they're doing this for the money though to like pay y'all back. Listen. To pay what? To pay like the orgs back for like the investment? See that that's a good question but I don't think so. We haven't gotten to those discussions. There was also something that came out yesterday that the money was given back for OWL. You saw that. You saw that. Yeah. So whether that happens we're coming soon to come to come. Whether it happens we'll call it or not. Like I don't know. But the fact that they're making these sort of.

Let me tell you what's going to happen. if it goes to YouTube. Step by step it, man. All right, the game's going to drop. Everyone's going to be hype. Everyone's going to be streaming on Twitch. Everyone's going to have inflated viewership. They're all going to be loving that shit. Kickoff tournaments, pubs. Everyone's going to be grinding for dark matter, whatever the fucking exclusive

camo is for camos, all that good stuff. S&D, whatever. Everyone's going to be playing that shit. First event's going to roll around. 100,000 viewers. Minimum. Guaranteed. And then slowly but cheerily, it's going to trickle on off. End of the year, 15,000 viewers for league matches. as it was before.

Correct. Like I just don't understand that we have, we have, uh, after major one, it's going to, these, these people with lots of money invest for 10 years. This is not a, a quick turnaround, you know, money grab for, for these investors.

Like this is a, a long play for them. So for them to make that decision so early is just not what it is. So I don't, again, I don't, I don't think that's, uh, that's real. I hope so. Yeah, I don't think that that's real at all. The thing is,

You can sacrifice a lot of things for revenue. The eyeballs are not one of them. The thing is... You're your moneymaker. I was going to say, CD, they haven't really mentioned watch parties, and I'm sure that those won't go anywhere, but if they make us do it on YouTube only, I mean, that's definitely a thing,

but, I mean, we've already talked about it. Viewership's going to... If the watch party's on YouTube, by default... I don't know, because there's two options. If watch parties are a thing, you either watch the full thing on YouTube, on my YouTube channel, which I think would still get decent viewership. It would do good, but it Twitch is the

e-sports viewing platform. Or we full face cam cover up like 70% of the screen on Twitch. It would ruin like the it would actually fuck everything. It would fuck everything. And I feel like this year's been pretty solid, obviously. This year's been great viewership-wise. With the watch parties, yeah. I mean, champs, we haven't even seen champs yet and what the viewership's going to look like at champs, but I mean, we've broken records at

like our major, like records were broken. Like if there was a perfect storm where we kind of talked about on the last podcast, we got a good call of duty, like a good out-of-the-box competitive call of duty. On top of the infrastructure that we have right now, I mean, we could be looking at, you know, potentially another golden era age for call of duty where viewerships high. I mean, we've just been waiting on like a good cod. For decades. Like if we had a good cod this year,

in black awesome. Dude, if we had a good cod this year, it would be fucking insane. It doesn't matter about the structure of the league all that stuff, which are obviously improvements that could be made. If we had a good cod this year, it still would be doing crazy and it's still doing good right now. But that paired with what we have

now would just send it. But if this happens, I see bad things in the near future. I mean, if they somehow allow Twitch watch parties, it'll be okay. Like if it's... There's no way. There's no way.

We'll have more viewers than the lady. Yeah, I know. It doesn't make sense. But if they were to find a compromise there, the reg. I see people defending this. I see people defending this on Twitter. You see people defending this on Twitter?

I see people that I grew up with defending this shit on Twitter. No shot. That have been with us since day one. I want fucking names. And I'm all for, I'm all for making revenue. But I think this is, should be like the last,

the last case scenario. You don't understand. Okay. And I'm going to tell you right now. Me? Are them? You. Okay.

I'm going to tell you this. This revenue that you talk about? Yeah. We've seen what the proposal is. Well, Natechot tweeted that it's not a lot. Oh, you're saying the money from his deal. Yeah. Okay.

Nate shot tweeted it's like, he said the, what, the juice isn't worth the squeeze. Correct. That's what Nate Schott said. And we will be seeing Nate Schatz this weekend. For his Bachelor Party, famously his favorite movie is the girl next door. And that's what the, I think the ending quote was the, was the, was the, was the juice worth the squeeze? Why not try. Why not try other shit first?

Like, why not like try to like, no, not kick? Okay, I saw people debating like a, so like paywalls, like paying the watch. We have a very young fan base. What do you think about something more like? I think you're wrong on that. No, but just hear me out. What do you think? And I'm asking all you guys like just your opinion because I don't even know how I feel about it.

Let's say there's a $5 or it's free to watch like 720P. And if you want to watch 1080P and have like exclusive content and shit, it's, it's $5 a month. Yeah. I mean, it's like MLGTV. MLGTV did that. People would not like that. They wouldn't like it. But to be fair, there has to be money made, and this is not the answer.

This is the, this is the end of real. I feel like there's a disconnect in e-sports, especially with, like, the fan base. It's like, people don't really look at esports as, like, a business and a profitable thing that needs to be profitable. And when you start throwing shit on like that, it's like people get outraged, but at the same time, like, you have to make money. Yeah, it's, it's an interesting one. Because esports, like, it's not. We get lumped up in e-sports because we compete in e-sports. Esports.

But from the beginning of time, if you go back and look at the podcast from way back in the fucking houses, you will hear me say the words that Optic is a media company that happens to be really, really good at esports. Right. But our model from the beginning, our, what? Logan Roy. No, no, no, no. Roman.

You're letting him put your business out there like that? I think... Everyone already knows that. I think this is a year... Lockdown. But we've heard every year salaries are going down. I actually think this is the year where salaries will be adjusted. Yes.

They have to be. Yes. It's like, like, right here I see, sure, if you're a top player in the CDL, you'll You'll keep making big money for him. What do you say? He's loving this. I was like, and not yours.

Yeah, I mean, if you're a top player, you'll still make big money for the next couple years, but like, where's the longevity? Like, if that viewership is dying, I don't know. I'll tell you what. He wouldn't get paid

what he gets paid if we weren't able to monetize what we do or we weren't able to supplement in tandem some of the stuff that we do that pairs up with that. Right? So I understand why some organizations

are willing to do that because they haven't been able to figure out a way to monetize their, their fan base. Yeah. Now, if they do this,

this is for a surefire way to not be able to ever monetize your, your audience, because if we would have never gone back to Twitch, then maybe I can see a world in which,

you know, this is a YouTube thing, so we're with YouTube and we're building the YouTube audience. But the fact that we pause that to go back to Twitch for a year

to prove to ourselves that it is the better platform for Call of Duty e-sports and Warzone, then I don't know what it is. But you know what? As I always say,

this, you know, operating a business like Activision is like asking me to figure out a way to go to the moon. I mean, YouTube is very, YouTube one day can compete with Twitch. They're just not there. I mean, I watched the CDL every single weekend when we were on YouTube and I had to search it every single time.

Like, you would think that someone who watches the CDL every single weekend, when I open up YouTube and CDL is live, it should be the first thing I see. so discoverability's not there the chat isn't as good and it's just not the hub like if you're looking for an esports event you go to Twitch

well people like YouTube though which which I agree this feature is nice like yeah it's all in one place like if you want to go back and rewatch a situation you can just click on the thing or go back 10 seconds which that's like that's like the only benefit

that I see from YouTube and maybe I don't know how the quality is on YouTube I obviously don't stream on it but I think you can push a little bit better of a bit rate on YouTube which is also nice. It's nice for the viewers that are already there. Because they're like, you know, they will like that.

But then like Zini said, imagine the amount of new eyes that come through like on Twitch when we're doing our watch party or they're going to the main CDL stream for drops. I see people in my recommended that I've never once clicked on their stream ever. I don't know what realm of e-sports or entertainment they're in. but they're on my screen in the recommended tab just because they have viewers or they're trending or whatever it may be like on where on platform on Twitch like the discoverability is just there

like you could actually discover other streamers and different communities just based on the the way the website is laid out yeah I think it's I mean selfishly it's it's bad I mean people are going to say like you just want it for the watch party which I mean yeah the watch party is fucking great but it's also so good for not just us, but everybody. And I do. What do you think justifies player salaries? What do you think

justifies high-end events and traveling to cool locations and like it's all eyes? And if you lose the eyes, you lose everything. Yeah. Like there's no like revenue is important, but I don't think revenue is more important in the short term than having the people watching. Because like the way I see it and I'm naive when it comes to the business of it. I'm not in the Activision Board. I don't know how it actually works, but we see growth for the first time in years. actual good consistent growth, you would think that, especially, I mean, talking about a billion dollar company, like a company that if they wanted to eat the cost and let this thing ride for a second?

Well, one, you don't become a mega billion. Multi would be like three billion. They just sold for 69. That's mega. Who sold? Activision selling to Microsoft. So for. Which would be good because that means that our championship rings are going to look like the

Halo ones instead of like the fucking pieces of shit that you put a quarter down and twist the knob. You would think that you would be down to eat the cost and like just let it ride out in the short term just to see where it can go because dude, the way I think of it is the YouTube deal, if anything, would only be bigger in a year or two when we have more consistent viewership. Like I don't understand the panic move. I'm not sure if they're trying to prove revenue.

I'm not sure. No. I think it got looped in with a bigger deal. They were like they're getting a discount because. Cloud services. They're like, okay, we'll throw in the CW or CDL and Overwatch. We should just talk about that for a second because a lot of people probably don't know what we're talking about. Go ahead. So, and you can, I mean, from what I know, there's a cloud services deal where, I've heard two different things.

I heard that what they're trying to do is in order for the Microsoft deal to go through. They're using Google. So Microsoft has their own cloud services. Like they have their own. But they're going to use Googles for a few years to prove to like the Apple. SEC are the government that they're not monopolizing or there's some reason. They've already done that in the past. The first the first YouTube deal with Overwatch.

Yeah. I think it was like 90 mil. I don't remember what the report said. It was 90 mil, but it was also part of like a bigger cloud services thing back in 2019, 2020. So it's already happened. It's already been done. So it's a continuation of that.

So it can't be that. So you're on the right track. It's just not what you're saying right now. I heard they're getting like a big discount on like cloud services or something by looping in the CDL, but it's like, dude, there is no way the CDL is that fucking important to loop into that deal. Just keep that one out. We're going to keep CDL over here.

You can take World Series of Warzone. What else do you want? Map packs, camos, all yours. We keep the CDL. I don't know. Yeah, apparently it's a cloud. It's honestly probably a lot more complex than I can explain that I actually know. but the end all be all is that it's the wrong move for call of duty sports

none of y'all business. But it's not as enticing as it would. If it made, if it made financial sense for everyone, then I think that everybody would be more willing to just go with it and explore it, right? But there can't be this, this half step into, all right, the CDL and Overwatch is, let's, it was, it was a, it was a, it was a collaborative sort of deal, right? Like, they both, they both have to be in it. But let's remove the OWL out of it because I think it's, it's, doesn't matter at this point. But if, if call a duty,

was on YouTube from the beginning of the CDL for a two-year exclusivity period. And then they went back to Twitch so that they can cut a better deal or they just went to Twitch because the deal hadn't been done and they did a non-exclusive streaming with YouTube and Twitch where none of the, none of the media rights were sold, which is where we're at right now. Like that is is not what we should have done. If it was going to be on YouTube from the beginning, it should have been on YouTube from the beginning. Like there would be no CDLIP on the screen at all. There's gonna... Your stream is too big. So there can't be a single scoreline, a number, nothing. It has to be all recreated by Riley or it has to be something else.

But why? Because don't they loop all viewership as one? Scump, Zuma, whoever else is watch partying, Cod League. Which is why it's a mandate that you cannot not have the stream on camera at all time. Yeah, but what I'm saying is they're losing a lot of numbers that they give to potential sponsors and whoever. In those meetings, when they say, oh, we had this many concurrent viewers and this was our peak viewership, they lump everybody together. And if they get rid of that, then they're just promoting

their own viewership. And then by default, they're going to get less money from sponsors because the viewership is going to be lower. It will be by midseason, there will be 20,000 people. watching league matches 30 to 35 watching ours. We need to learn fucking Chinese, buddy. You guys are going to China. I will say this. I forgot to do this at the beginning of this discussion, but I want to make sure that everybody watching this

understands that the league itself, let's say that this one is the league, and then there are employees that are sitting there, right? Let's say these are all the employees that work for the league. They have no say in what the decisions of the big corp has to say. It comes from up here and then it trickles all the way down. Lawyer, lawyer, lawyer, lawyer.

Then it goes to the league. And then the league then disperses the message. And so I want to make sure that you understand that the people that are working on the league, some of them, from what I've heard, are upset at the fact that we worked so hard on this. And this thing is going in such the right way that they themselves were a little bit upset. I'm not going to say no names because I'm not trying to get anyone fucking fired.

Right. But there is. It's not the league's decision. And when we say the league, we're talking about the decision of Activision. So I think from here and now we have to say Activision instead of the league. Because the league, I think, has the best interest of the league because they too are passionate about the league. So what is it? Go ahead.

What is the reason that I guess Activision is so desperate for short term? They're not. No, no. They're not. So I don't understand. Like, you would think, I'm not sure if this is a crazy mentality. We talked about before. Like, call of duty, e-sports.

especially with multiplayer being like not as popping as it used to be, you have other games competing now. You would think that esports would be like a viable path for like parents to put their children in, like actually let them play video games and like keep Call of Duty thriving. I'm not sure if that's like a thing that makes sense at all. It's kind of like, I'm not sure many people we get from that. But wouldn't you like do everything you can to make this thing thrive to like have that added layer of like knowing people are going to watch and play multiplayer?

Like why is it so. wishy-washy. They already do that. They release ranked in March because they want people to come back to it. That's why they do it. Yeah, but what I'm saying is why don't they want this thing to grow consistently, like, and put everything you have into it? I guess is my question. Warzone rank, they released. I think we've always gotten, like, a half-assed effort, I think, from, like, the top dog. Like, we've always gotten, like, wishy, wishy-y-wark. Yeah, no. Well, that's another problem. There's a huge problem with the, developers and Activision and there's no consistency across the three developers. So like I've always said,

I think the right person needs to walk into the right room, put his fucking foot down and say, put his foot down and say all three developers, each game needs this, this and this. And every single title we need, Codcaster, rank play, every single thing we need, period. But it's not that way because Infinity War, they come out. They do a billion in week one. And the shareholders are happy and everybody's happy and that is what it is. You're answer your own question. Activision is never going to take any short-term money, or they're going to take the, they're always going to do what's best for the interest of the shareholders in their view.

Or there's, like, there's a possibility. They're saying it's happening. They're saying it's done. So I guess my question for you, is, because I don't know how these meetings work,

or if you can answer this. Is it a conversation or is it, can they just say this is happening, eat shit? I, listen, all right. So first of all, this is coming from a reporter. This is coming from me, right? Yeah. So again, no. Can they just make that decision?

No, because we paid to be partners in this thing. Activision is one thing. Even call it duty is its own thing. But this thing in the middle, call the CD, people invested money into, people invested brands into, people invested lives into. So no, they can't just make a decision in this partnership. Because once they sold the IP rights to create this thing in the middle, everybody has a say in it. Because they are equal investors in this thing as we are.

Because we're giving them money to create this thing. So we are partners. Partners means that you and I have to agree on something. Correct. Is methods going to join? I don't know. Then you say yeah. And then I'm like, I don't know.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I'm fine. Both of us made that decision. If one of us would have said no, I was always team Zinn. Yeah, okay. Anyway, I just saw my phone. Anyway, levity aside. They cannot do that.

This is a partnership and we all have to agree to do something like that. That's good. You see, that gives me, fuck. There's hope. Yeah. And so right now that is not true. If it is true, and they went behind every owner's back. You're going to see them.

released a statement. I think from what I understand, that's some private information. But because they too are a publicly traded company, they had to make that statement for their shareholders. Right. So I think that they're, I don't know who or what, how that happens. Not my business. my business, but, you know, we, we got a text from our lawyer saying, it's like, yo, don't talk about this, right?

But I'm talking about this. I'm talking about the article that came out. But yeah, it says that the 12 inaugural teams in the OW paid approximately $20 million each to join the league. Expansion teams have joined the league in 2018, paid a premium, a total cost of around $30 to $35 million. Since then, the team entry fees were reduced because the COVID-19 pandemic, not true, in my opinion.

So after factoring all the fees and schedules, blah blah blah teams own six and seven point five million is that the money that blah blah blah blah okay you guys can go out and read it i'm not i'm gonna be here for that but that is true in the beginning people were sold on the fact that hey i'm activision uh robert craft put in 20 million dollars for you put in 20 million dollars so you're not gonna robert craft put in 20 million dollars so you're not going to feel yeah into this thing yeah right Yeah. And then you can pay it up front or you can pay it and blah, blah, blah.

Here you go. Yeah. Well, what do I get for that says Robertcraft? He's like, well, you know, there are 90 million people playing this thing. And if since you're from Boston, let me give you a list of Bostonians that play this game at the highest level. And these are your pro players. These top five ranked players are your pro players. And because it's such a popular game, everybody that plays all 90 people, 90 million people that watch this saying,

those numbers are just, you know, crazy numbers. These 90,000, 90 million people are going to watch it because it's the best people playing. So your audience is already way bigger than football. Your audience is way bigger than what you have right now. They were telling people that. And more importantly, more importantly, the media rights that we're going to sell against this are going to be insane. And that's where we're going to make a money. So I, or him, Mr. Robert Kraft is like, well, I understand media rights.

I own the Patriots. Okay. Tom Brady, mine at the time. I understand media rights and I know how much the NFL pays us and I know that I can make a little bit of a profit some teams more often than that don't some break even but they have an alpha investor
