Here is former MLBer, you hear him on Beetle and Decker on CirrusXM.
Here is Cody Decker back on overdrive. What's up Cody, how you doing?
Oh, just living a nightmarish version of the dream.
How you guys doing?
Yes, oh we're doing the same thing up here man.
And the Jays, they took an L today down at Citi Field, the Met's home opener, but for
the most part it's been pretty positive.
Everyone we discussed the Jays with, we naturally start with Vladi and the perception of that person on bloody guru junior where do you stand on him as
a player and potentially on a five hundred million dollar player
uh... five hundred million dollars is a tough pill for me to swallow and as was
the seven hundred fifty million dollar price tag on
one so that you could never convince me was a good idea
uh... this is a player that's eventually going to be a d h down road. So how much offensive output is he planning for him to give you? And if
we're talking about a 10 to 15 year deal, I don't know why any GM thinks that's a good
idea either. Do I think this guy deserves to be paid a high AAV for the following years?
Absolutely. But I am not very sold that a 10 year deal is what's best for business for
the Blue Jays, to be quite honest. That being said, it is best for business that Vladimir Grorio Jr. resigns there and comes
back and hopefully spends the next five years there.
But if we're talking 10, 15-year deals, I don't know why anybody outside of the Shohei
Otani deal, which by the way is a 10-year deal, yes, but it's paid over a 20-year period
on top of that, you're paying justifiably for two pitchers.
You're paying $350 million for the pitcherers are paying three hundred million three hundred fifty million dollars pitchers
for the pitcher three hundred fifty million dollars for the hitter
you're simply not getting even a semblance of that glad is a hell of a
hitter but he's not show a hotel any
on either side of the ball
what about your perception of the shets
you know do you think he should be a guy that
to be locked up uh... he's had a nice little start here i think he's a
high-value player what do you make of that
solid player young it's just a matter what the years are going to be in the a
the i don't really know what the plan is going forward it's seeming like a lot of
players want the deferred money
or the blue jays interested in deferred money so like they're hurting for cash
and we've rogers is theyred money. It's not like they're hurting for cash. Rogers is worth $10 billion himself, man. If it's all about that, then quite frankly, I don't
know why this team actually hasn't overspent at all to this point. They have the money
to do it. And frankly, it's the Blue Jays. You're the only team in town. And when I say
the only team in town, I'm talking about in the country, man. Get it going. I do believe
in this Blue Jays team right now. I think this is a team that could sneak into the wild card either in the third or second spot but the Red Sox are ahead. That's a
hell of a pitching staff and the Yankees despite not starting the year with Hill Stanton and being
without Cole throughout the year that is still the New York Yankees and they're not going anywhere
either. Yeah that's the reality of the American League East and you know we were talking a lot
about that leading up to the the season that all these different teams
around the baltimore boston new york at all taken different hits in different
areas you mention the yankees in particular but even baltimore we've got
our henderson banged up early and you know they they didn't necessarily add to
their staff if anything they lost
uh... in terms of arms in the offseason
yet you know the jays are five and three with this loss today
and in the offseason yet you know the Jays are five and three even with this loss today and you know we're waiting on Max Scherzer and and this is an element of
trying to project what could happen here is that you're hoping you could get
maybe 120 innings out of Max 130 had to be reasonable he wasn't giving you 220
230 240 that was never gonna happen but now I'm I'm I have no idea when we're
gonna see him throw again.
I don't know what it's going to look like.
He went to Pennsylvania, got the quarter zone shot.
Where do you stand on the likelihood that Max Scherzer can have an impact on this Blue
Jays season?
I think he could, but I do think it's going to take some time.
And frankly, if it's going to come down to the idea that maybe we've got to put Max on
ice for a couple of months to really kind of get him up to speed so maybe there could be a late season run
maybe that's a better option considering the fact the guy's up there in age we can't sit here and
pretend that not to mention he's had no healthy track record over these last couple of years so
frankly this is what needs to happen it's frustrating it's upsetting to see for the blue j
fans i like that santander pickup i do think they should have been a little bit more active during the offseason
But this team is still ready to win the game today was obviously going to be a wash
I didn't think they were gonna win this game Kevin Gossman does not have good numbers against this Mets team specifically for
Specific players not to mention he got touched up a little bit early on in the game
With Cody Decker again, you can hear him on CirrusXM, former MLBer himself.
The Dodgers 8-0.
Is this good for baseball if they run off 110 wins, win another World Series, Shohei
wins the MVP?
I think it's good for baseball if they win 162 games.
All the Dodgers have done is shown all of you what you all can do.
You just choose not to do it.
I have no sympathy for billionaire owners that don't want to open up the purse.
I'm sorry.
Do it or don't do it.
And if you don't do it, sell the team to somebody that will.
The Dodgers clearly want to win.
And by the way, all that money they spent generated a ton more money.
Just think about the Japanese money that came into the Los Angeles Dodgers last year. If you believe reports, it's upwards of
$250 million of just new Japanese money that came to that franchise last year alone.
So you're telling me Shoei Otani's $700 million contract will be paid off in three years?
Why aren't all of you doing this? It's a roadmap. It's right there.
Well, so Cody, do you buy that they can set the record
this year for wins I do wow I do why are 119 or so it's it would be 117 I
believe would be the new record and listen I'm not saying they're going to
do it but we're gonna pretend this team can't do it an 8-0 run remember this
team won the World Series last year with their JD pitching staff.
They didn't have Tyler Glass now,
they didn't have Clayton Kershaw,
they didn't have Tony Gonsolin,
they didn't have Dustin May,
and they didn't have Shohei Otani.
Like, that's a five-man rotation
that's filled with two Hall of Famers and three All-Stars,
and they had none of them.
And now they're all back,
except I don't know where you fit any of them, because now they have a nine-man rotation with more All-Stars and more Hall none of them. And now they're all back except, I don't know where you fit any of them
because now they have a nine man rotation
with more All Stars and more Hall of Famers.
It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.
Not to mention their bullpen
that has four quality closers in Scott, Gratterall,
and not to mention Lyles.
I mean, it's just one after, oh, Blake Trinen.
How do I forget about Blake Trinen of all people?
It's just, dear God, this team is built to win nonstop.
I don't know where they're going to lose 50 games.
I don't know where they're going to lose 40.
I don't know how they're going to lose 10.
That's crazy.
We talked about this last week, Cody.
Is there a conceivable picture where they're in the finals they're in the World Series and
Otani is hitting and pitching like we see some you know crazy thing where he's
you know hits a home run and then he has to save the game in the ninth inning
like would that be the apex of what he could do and for Major League Baseball
as well 100% in fact we already got uh... a taster of the two years
ago in the world baseball classic when he finished out and closed out the game
for japan striking at show off
mike trout on three fastballs
to this point that might have been the most electric at bat i've ever seen in
my life and all i did was watch mike trout swing through three fastballs
uh... there is a very good chance we're gonna see something very spectacular we
haven't seen on the mound yet we don't know what i get on him yet
and again this is the guy who won an mvp his first year as a full-time d h in the
national league
no nationally d h is ever won an mvp no d h is ever won an mvp he did in this
first try so i
i put nothing past this man in this team
now i think that's uh... definitely reasonable and i i'm curious which ever
cody decker do you see him starting games like i know that dot has been very
coy on when he's gonna even be available if i think they said that robert said
recently like we're talking weeks if not months i don't think they really have
anything penciled in
or do you think it could be like what newtons just pointed out that maybe he's
a bullpen arm that you know spot duty especially come playoff time? This is
actually why I think Dave Roberts is the best manager in Major League Baseball
and I have thought this for a couple of years now that's why I always look back
five years ago when people gave him flack trying to say oh they need a fire
Dave Roberts I giggled the guy's a absolutely brilliant a great motivator
and knows how to handle his players that team is
Take it from somebody's playing the big leagues big league clubhouses are the most ego-filled places
I've ever been in my life, and I cannot stress this enough
It seems like the Dodgers have absolutely no ego you got Mookie Betts playing shortstop out of position right now
Everybody it's all hands on deck. You have all-stars
taking bench rolls. You have closers not more than willing to be a setup
guy or a seventh inning guy. The way he gets things out of his players, I
put it past him to do everything. I bet we're gonna see Otani start. I bet we're
gonna see him close. I bet we're gonna see him set up. Everybody does everything
on the Dodgers. It's the most remarkable thing I've ever seen.
Yeah, and they're off to an 8-0 start. He is former MLB-er. You can hear him on Cirrus
XM with Michelle Beadle and co-hosting Beadle and Decker. Great catching up with you, Cody.
We really appreciate you doing this.
