Sports today, though, Micah Parsons, all pro pass rusher on this way to Green Bay.
It's the massive contract, two first rounders and Kenny Clark going the other way.
Here's Mike Gollick Jr. Coaster of Golick and Golick on Fandual Sports Network.
Mike, what do you think Jerry Jones is thinking here?
Is it possible he's actually made the right play here?
Well, but I'm sure he thinks that.
I mean, this is insane.
And Jerry Jones has made a living of trying to do things his own way, been handsomely.
rewarded for it. All the gunslinger stuff we've heard from him for years. He finally pushed the
wrong player and now Michael Parsons is a Green Bay Packer. And I can't imagine anyone in Dallas is going
to buy what Jerry Jones is trying to sell them. Yeah. And he's going to because you know it's coming.
The press is coming tonight, tomorrow, the next day. He'll be up in front of the mic and in front
of the cameras as much as he can between now and opening night on Thursday. But if you're,
I don't know how you handicap the chances of Dallas being competitive this year. How much does this
them beyond what maybe you were expecting
prior to this trade?
Well, I'll listen, that has a
massive effect. I mean, this is a Dallas team that
you know, I get it. There's new leadership there,
new coaches on both sides of the ball,
but a still a team that was searching
for personnel answers
for how to get over a lot
of their issues with
stopping the run, doing those things. And the one
phase of the game that you could count on
was Michael Parsons in this passing
attack as a guy that was going to
be the point of the sphere, the guy that was going to make things
happened and that opposing offenses at least had to spend their week figuring out how are we
going to account resources to stop 11 in that cowboy's uniform and now opposing offenses
what do they really have to worry about all that much from the cowboy's defense it's just not
a lot there and so this is a massive impact on their ability to go out here and be competitive
in an nfc east as up last year like has another big time player with the washington
commanders and how well they did during jaden daniel's rookie year before we get to the
impact of this on the Green Bay Packers, which I'm sure we're going to get to, when you look
at the return that the Cowboys got, is there a team in the AFC that you kind of target and
say, well, how come you didn't come to the table with a deal like that? Because you probably
could have got a player that really helps you. Yeah, I mean, I guess the easy one to probably
look at would have been the New England Patriots just because you got your quarterback locked up
on a rookie deal. You've got a ton of cap space to play with. Like, you've got all the signs there.
and Michael Parsons, you know, and under a defensive-minded regime with Mike Brable,
could have been a real linchpin guy, even if the fit wasn't maybe perfect.
So I think that could be one, but, you know, with them, it's tough.
You're not competitive right now in the same way the Green Bay Packers are.
And, you know, we're going into this, quite honestly.
So I think that could have been the one, but teams would have needed a specific amount of cash space.
Michael Parsons, that deal was worked out post-trade.
So he was going to need a certain amount of cap space.
I think it was field.
He said just over $21 million.
So there were only, I believe, according to over the cap, like seven teams that would have qualified for that.
And so I think this was probably always going to be one of the names people associated with it and turns out to be the one that gets it done.
Mike, we're just seeing now that the Cowboys will have their press conference, 630 Central, at 7.30 Eastern, I believe.
If Jerry Jones is at that, how do you think that gets handled?
Do you think he takes the low road and there's something?
some side swiping along the way?
Do you think there's some hurt egos and all of this?
What do you think those comments are going to be like off the top?
I'd imagine Jerry Jones is going to try and paint this as, you know,
the positive in the hall that he got back.
He loves talking about, you know, back in the day of the halls that he's gotten in the past
or that teams have given up, he tries to point out all the time
that one player can never really be the difference.
And in the propaganda battle in the lead up to this,
He talked about how, hey, Mike has had injuries in the past year.
Look what happens when you have too much money tied up in one player.
And so I'm sure he's going to keep the focus on the future, the overhaul,
what they're going to be able to do with the two first round picks going into this.
So I'd imagine that would probably be the lead there, in addition to, like he's been doing a lot of this time,
putting the onus on Michael Parsons saying, hey, I had the deal ready to go for him.
He's the one that didn't want to be a Dallas Cowboy, and now here we are,
even though we all know that's not the case.
With Mike Golick Jr., Golick and Golick on the Fandoz Sports Network.
So for the Packers, how does this change?
I asked you how Parsons leaving Dallas changes the way you'd handicap their season.
How does Parsons arriving in Green Bay change the way you'd handicap Green Bay's upcoming season?
Legitimate Super Bowl contenders, it should be them and the lions in a dog fight for the NFC North to start this season.
I think they're now both heads and tails.
of a Vikings team that's going to be basically starting a rookie and a Bears team that's got
a lot of newness in the building that's still going to have to work itself out.
So I think it absolutely puts them in contention like that.
Going into this offseason, everyone said they needed a few specific things, right?
They needed a difference-making receiver on offense, and they hope Matthew Golden, their
first round pick is going to be that guy.
But they also needed someone that was a more dynamic rusher.
Roshan Gary is your best pass rusher is good for a lot of places, but maybe not Super Bowl
good in a division as competitive as the NFC North.
with Michael Parsons now as your lead dog in that, you know, you lose Kenny Clark and he's obviously
an important-ish guy still, but I think overall this now bolts them into the kind of defense
where, hey, Jeff Halfley came over last year, infilled that more attacking style to them and
changed the way that they're going to go about business there. So I think he is an addition
that puts you in a legitimate conversation as a Super Bowl contender.
Mike, when we remove, remove Jerry Jones from all of this, I know it was awfully hard to do,
I'm curious your thoughts on the actual package itself that the Packers are sending over to Dallas in this.
Getting Kenny Clark is one fine player, probably not a long-term piece.
The two first-round picks, my first thought is that those are probably late in the first round.
What do you think about this package compared to what you might have had in mind going into this whole saga?
About what I expected.
Like, I figured it was going to be at least two first that we heard originally.
That was kind of the early report coming out.
I wouldn't have been surprised if Dallas had been asked.
asking for a third on there.
And so getting a player back who can go out here
and help you, you hope immediately, I guess, qualifies.
But this is around what we expected it would take to get a 26-year-olds
who's one of the three best pass rushers in the NFL.
And then when it comes to the deal that he signs with the Green Bay Packers,
four years, 188 million, 120 guaranteed.
I think it goes up to 136 million in guarantees eventually.
you know, how easily digestible, I guess, is that money for a non-quarterback and I guess
how much more he's going to be making than someone like T.J. Watt per year.
And to me, like, I think it's really easy to take when you've got the quarterback of your future
already on the roster. Like, that's the big thing you worry about with a lot of these.
And Green Bay's already got that taken care of. They understand they've got a window of opportunity
here while you've got new coordinator changes in Detroit, while you've got a new quarterback
back coming in in Minnesota, while you're hoping maybe Sakewan Barclay, the Philadelphia
Eagles, there might be a step back there coming off that Super Bowl, coming off that Super Bowl
where St. Juan Barclay eats all those touches. So I think they understood the opportunity. And
listen, he had a lot of leverage coming in knowing, hey, you're dealing with a guy who is a trade
asset. They automatically come in with that bit of leverage. And to me, look at what Tile Hamilton
and the Baltimore Ravens did. When you pay a young guy that you know is great early, that contract ages
well fast. And with this one, you have a long timeline that you're trying to work with here
with Michael Parsons. And so I think this is a no-brainer in terms of the money spent, given
where this team currently is situated. Who do you think we'll have a better year this year?
Jordan Love or Dak Prescott?
I would say overall Jordan Love because he's going to be on a better team. Like
Jack Prescott and that offense could be doing a version of what we've seen Joe Burrow have to do
with the Cincinnati Bengals, depending on how that all goes.
Prescott, I think, still could arguably be the better quarterback when healthy, but
it's just asking a lot of a guy to continue to go out and shoulder the load with what
they're turning over on the other side of the ball.
Great catching up with you, Mike. Thank you for doing this.
