Starting point is 00:00:00 Hour two of overdrive. Brought to you by Fandu, it will bring you more ways to play your game, Your Way, Aaron Kronick, and for Brian Hayes with Jamie McClennon, Jeff O'Neill. Mike Johnson will join us momentarily. Was between the benches for the Leafs and the Rangers last night, the Leafs win 5'4.
Starting point is 00:00:16 And I'm sure you guys saw the bench reaction when Troy Stetcher scored the game-winning goal late in the third. And I believe MJ said it was like a world junior type reaction. These guys were going crazy. You could see it up here. on TSN4. Look at it. It's like they won the Stanley Cup.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Dude, why not? I love it. I love it. How many times have you seen those guys sitting on the bench and they're just deadpan? It's just whoever started that, is it McKenna that was like kind of? Oh, McKenna's got this thing going on where his celebration from Penn State. But the reason I bring this up and why I think it's relevant is because remember with
Starting point is 00:00:52 Craig Barubei, remember when he schooled at Mark Savard for celebrating too much on the bench and it's just incredible how dramatically things have changed with regards to the team mentality. A little bit different. For sure. No, no, but you saw the players on the bench. These guys were going crazy. And Jim Hiller wasn't, you know, hugging his assistants like they won the Stanley Cup. But it was no worthy the way that they celebrated that goal.
Starting point is 00:01:17 A couple things on the reason. The timing of the goal, you know that you pretty much won the game. Secondly, that's a guy that scores two goals a year. So, you know, I should check and I'm trying to be... First and 33. I'm not trying to be disrespectful to Troy Stetcher. What I'm saying is that it's an unlikely candidate. That night, that was really the whole night was unlikely candidates.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Because that wasn't the Matthews-Nielander, you know, Marchenko night. That was supporting cast. It was guys digging in. And, you know, that's where I think they... You should be excited. Because take a look, all those guys that are hugging and fired up on there, those are usually the guys that are raising their arms that have scored the goals for the most part for this team this year. Because there hasn't been a lot of production from the bottom of the roster.
Starting point is 00:02:08 That changed last night. You know what they look like guys, and I'm not trying to sound corny? They look like a team. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Like a team that cares about each other and cares about winning and, you know, caring about Stetcher. I said about these guys last night, if they got energy and excitement,
Starting point is 00:02:28 they're going to have a chance to win. Obviously, special teams help. Bobrovsky playing well helps. But if you have that energy and excitement and you're playing for each other and you generally care for each other, it's a massive thing. You're exactly right.
Starting point is 00:02:41 And, Jamie, you're bang on about the depth guys because it seems like on a nightly basis when I do the games on TSA on the panel, it's either at the end of the game, the big boys were great or the big boys stunk. It's nice to have some other guys. We talked about the pressure on skilled players, the best players to do it every night.
Starting point is 00:02:58 It's nice once in a while where somebody else could say, you know what? You're a little bit sleepy, and that's exactly what happened last night because the big boys weren't exactly thriving through 35 minutes, but you keep them close. Somebody chips in, and sure enough, you get them on the power play, and Marchenko got that goal. So that's how the team, playing as a team, that's how it works.
Starting point is 00:03:20 you guys don't have your best stuff we'll buy you some time and we'll get it on the power play i thought it was all great all great that's what i went you know when you look at it it's like you know it's duhaym and you know players like that it's stetcher that find the back of that it's bluger like that's that's what you hope for when you look at their you know career stats when you look at the end of the season those guys might have eight 10 six depending on you know du lame at four goals last year But, I mean, we didn't look like a four-goal score last night. And to me, I think those are the types of things where it's timely contributions. Because on any given night, you're right.
Starting point is 00:03:59 It's just, you're expecting Austin Matthews or Willie or, you know, when John comes back or Marchenko, or Easton Cowan's a guy who's now sliding into that conversation. Love, love, love. Right. But my point being, after that, it has been a cliff. Like, not just a gradual drop-off, a cliff. So it's nice when you, you know, the name is, it would have been great for to see Matthews score or wherever. But I'm saying it just doesn't always have to be the same cast of characters.
Starting point is 00:04:30 And, you know, tomorrow night's the same situation. Like, you know, we talk about McDavid, Dry Seidel, and Bouchard, but, you know, we just had Zach Hyman on last hour. It's Pod Colson. Like, it's more, they need other guys on that roster to score to have success over the full season. The Leafs got their depth last night. One thing I'm noticing about Easton Cowan, I have a really different way of looking at players and the way their knees kind of bend
Starting point is 00:05:00 and the way they skate, like projecting what they're going to look like. And last year, I was a little bit concerned with Easton Cowan's skating, if you can believe that. I wondered if he's going to be able to move at this level, and he is moving a lot better. I don't know what kind of work he put in in the summer, But he's faster, he's stronger, and give credit to Brian Hayes because I stole one of his lines yesterday on the panel.
Starting point is 00:05:24 He said he's like a Brad Marchant, and that's exactly what he looks like out there. Not the biggest guy. Can boogie, can score, gets in the corners. I think it's a perfect comparison for Easton Cowan. I love the player. All right. What do you laugh at? I love it.
Starting point is 00:05:43 No, I'm totally with you. It's impossible not to be loving everything we've seen from Easton. Easton Cowan so far this year. Let's head to the Maiple Toyota hotline where TSN hockey analyst Mike Johnson joins us. MJ. All right. He's already made his way up north.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Your take on Easton Cowan the Brad Marchan comparison. I see where I was talking about. I see the physical similarities. I see the combination of sort of puck retrieval, physical play without being a guy who hits a lot. I mean, I think what separated Brad Marchand
Starting point is 00:06:17 in many ways is that his ability to be dirty, which in the NHL can be an asset. I don't know if Easton Cowan has that in him. But that idea of a smaller guy, puck pursuit, who is good offensively, can get Pucks back, even though he's not the biggest. And the other aspect I'd like to see for Easton-O, Brad Marchand's a really good defensive winger.
Starting point is 00:06:41 He's really good in his own end. And he's think Cowan's not yet there away from the puck. That's okay. He's still growing out of the London night junior days. But, yeah, it's not a bad comparison at all. Marchant is a better player all around, but there are some similarities there. Yeah. Oh, MJ, we were talking about before you came on, the depth scoring,
Starting point is 00:07:03 that last night, you know, we saw how exciting they were when Stetcher scored. Obviously, the timing of it, them winning the game, but, you know, it wasn't just the same cast of characters that you've been relying on in the first 12 games. you know, that factor in some of it where, you know, you got production from the third and fourth line? Yeah, for sure. You guys know what it's like when guys who don't usually score get one or get a big one. There is obviously a stronger reaction because you know how hard they work, how much they put into it. But I'll say this, and this is different because I've been around this team for years. I've been between the benches.
Starting point is 00:07:41 I've seen them score big goals and overtime goals and milestone goals, regardless, whether it's top. not players or not, I don't remember ever seeing a reaction like that from the collective on the bench. I was like joyous, everyone in it together, little kid stuff. And I'm not saying that means they're going to make the playoffs. I'm not saying they're going to have a great year, but I will say it is different. That reaction is different from what we have seen in years past. I don't know if the vibe check is higher right now, but that kind of like Austin Matthews in the middle of it. Jumping for joy with everyone together. Excit.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Look, we don't see. It's fun. Fun to be around each other and enjoying each other's success. All of it. Like a levity to their being there. It's different and it's a good thing. I don't know how far it takes them, but it's better than the alternative, which has been
Starting point is 00:08:36 that way the last few years. Mike, we saw Nick Paul make an incredible play that probably hasn't been discussed enough today. I did see Jim Hiller made a point to bring that up. at the end of his press conference, unprompted, I may add. He's like, by the way, I want to mention Nick Paul's play at the end,
Starting point is 00:08:52 and you see him driving, drawing this penalty here, and then eventually driving to the net, and that leads to the stature goal. And this is a guy who's really had to step up in the absence of John Tavares. What did you see from Paul last night and his overall impact since Tavars has left the lineup? Yeah, that was a, and good on Jim Hiller,
Starting point is 00:09:10 if we're going out of his way, to mention a player doing something. That's a one-on-three. He's buying time for his line change to be completed. He buys the time. He draws the penalty and then he gets back to the front of the net. Like Nick Paul is probably not an ideal second line center, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:28 in the way, you know, a perfect world for the Toronto Maple Leafs. But one of the reasons they got Nick Paul was that he is versatile. He can move up and down the lineup. He can move from the wing to the middle and play both positions. He can be on the power play. He can be on the power play with Tampa at times,
Starting point is 00:09:43 the first power play. But he can also kill penalties and be, pretty good in the face off. He can do a bit of everything. And he's also been around a lot of winning with Tampa. He's used to sort of what it feels like to win games, big moments. And so you're seeing a little bit of
Starting point is 00:09:58 all of that. It's not been dominant highlight, real stuff from Nick Paul, but that's not what he is. That's not what he does. He just chips in in whatever you ask him to do. And as we see, injuries creep up here with different forwards going down, different D going down. You need guys that can
Starting point is 00:10:13 elevate at times. And Paul is one of those guys. he's done almost exactly what they hoped he would have done, even though they probably would prefer him not to be doing it in the second line center hole, but he's doing it right now because he has to. He's doing a decent job of it. Johnny, what do you make of the way that Jim Hiller is handling Gavin McKenna's ice time situation with expectations on the power play, and yet five on five, if things get a little greasy, and I know he tanked one last night and lost this guy and he was sleeping a bit
Starting point is 00:10:44 in front of the net, which can happen. But how would you kind of assess how he's doing it and how would you do it? So I have no problem. I know it's a big topic of conversation. Oh, listen to you guys in the panel between periods. I have no problem with him getting limited five-on-five
Starting point is 00:11:02 ice time and getting first unit power play reps. I got no problem whatsoever with that. It's better for him than the alternative. Getting no power play and then just sort of a regular third-line shift where he never touches the puck. And if you're still putting him in a spot, to do the things he does best,
Starting point is 00:11:17 which is with the first power play unit, where he goes out there and still produces points, even if he's playing, you know, 10 minutes a night of total ice time. Last night, that line was having a hard go. Terry and Sizzins, beyond the goal against all. Like, they barely touched the puck.
Starting point is 00:11:32 They weren't in the offensive end. They were not as good as the fourth line. So the fourth line played a more regular shift. That seems reasonable. When they're going well, he gets more consistent ice time. When they're not, he doesn't. I don't know who you're taking off the top six.
Starting point is 00:11:48 You take it off Roslavik? He's a point of game player. Take it off Cowan? It's a point of game player. You take it off Marchanko or a kneelander? No, you're not. So he has to plan the third line. The bigger issue, oh, for ice time for Gavin McKenna,
Starting point is 00:12:01 beyond the learning curvy's going through, making sure he gets his assignments, manages his puck, manages decisions, is that their third line isn't very productive with Sissons and Lettieri and McKenna. Like that's going to be not a line I would expect to create offense consistently. So he's playing with guys in the situation where maybe at five on five, he's not likely to do his best work.
Starting point is 00:12:27 So he gets limited run and then he gets maximum five on five time of the power or five on four time of the power play. I don't hate that. And I would probably be doing something the same. If there is a reason to change the top six, someone gets hurt, someone gets kicked out of a game, someone plays poorly, he's my first move up there. He gets the next spot in the top six winger rotation.
Starting point is 00:12:50 But there's no reason for that now, and I'm not breaking up what's working for guys who are playing better than him just because I want to see what he can do right now. I would probably be doing the same sort of thing. So, MJ, if you were a betting man, do you take the over in tomorrow's game between Evanton and the Leafs? Yes. You don't even need to need to know what the number is, hey, Mike? you'd be happy to know that in eight of their last match in seven of their last eight matchups seven or more goals scored in the game so over six and a half seems like a reasonable assertion number one offense number eight offense number 19 and 20 defenses a decor that's banged up in
Starting point is 00:13:29 toronto and they're missing at home as well in in evansom and devon levi who's the starter so yeah i'm thinking i'm taking the over in that game although i'm taking the over almost in any game that McDavid and Drysettle playing right now. I mean, what those guys are doing, and we can't forget about Drysaddle, who's got 10 gold in 10 games. Second best player in the league, FYI.
Starting point is 00:13:53 He might be one of the top four players in the year, league according to O and he's not wrong. He's really, really good. So, I mean, he got five points the other night, and we barely mentioned it because McDavid got five as well. Yeah, what I'm curious about O,
Starting point is 00:14:08 noodles, is that What do you think Mike Babcock's return would feel like in the room? They don't care about Mike Babcock as far as like, well, we got to, he was in Toronto. We want to play well against Toronto for Babs. I can't imagine they care about that, but I just wonder what sort of undertone that takes in the games more than night. Johnny, you know that when a coach is fired from a team, when they play that team, they would want their players to like the game. them enough and respect them enough to have one of those efforts so the coach doesn't have to come in
Starting point is 00:14:45 i can remember playing junior craig hartsberg was my coach in gualf and he was from sue st-marie and we went up to the sue and we absolutely st.meree was so pissed off i've never seen him that mad so you got to have some pride like if you play give a little extra for your coach don't like you you know the coach wants to win the game i i think there's there is something that they would want to do. The problem is, is both these teams have played a lot of hockey. You know, they're playing kind of at the top of their games, both of them right now. So I could see, you know, we all expect this like six, five type of game, and I could see maybe a careful game where, you know, both teams are like, we don't want to give that much
Starting point is 00:15:29 time and space to those guys and they don't want to give much time and space. It might be a special team's game, really, you know, because that's it. Five on five, I would argue probably both coaches, on a low event and you're not going to get low event with that amount of talent on the ice. I just don't think you can achieve it. I talk to Jim Hiller every game day and every game day we talk about his desire to tighten things up defensively to get out of their own end a little cleaner to not have neutral's own turnovers, but they doodles.
Starting point is 00:15:59 They keep happening every single game. So coaches may want a low event game and they're not going to get one, not with the talent, not with the personnel on these teams. and so I yeah they can ask but I don't think they're going to receive it. Remind me are they on the back end is Blankenberg? Did he come back? Blankenberg and Refai are on the IR and they recalled Mirmus. Oh, Blankin went on?
Starting point is 00:16:22 Yeah, both of those guys are on the I are and they recalled Murmiss and Mick Ward, a name I have never heard until today. Rick Ward? So again, the story they had done. No, no, Mick Ward, Cole Mick Ward was recalled by the Leafs. Ben Danford remains with the H. I thought his first name was Mick and his second name was Ward. That's how much I know about him.
Starting point is 00:16:44 I know. Seriously, I'm with you. I'm sorry, Cole McWard. I did treases in games. I never prepped. Oh, what do you got on Cole McWord? I don't know that. The point remains.
Starting point is 00:16:54 You're talking about, so with Tannav out and Rify out and Blankenberg out, you're looking at defensemen 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 playing against the Oilers? on the road on an ice and you got Mick Ward and Mirmus out there against McDavid. That's not a great mix. That's a, no. But that's why I say. That's a tough challenge. That's where I think the team could shrink up.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Just when you think, I'm telling you, I've seen it, we think this is going to be an old-fashioned shootout and it might be a three-two, you know, tight game, goalie steals a game type of thing. like Tristan Jari's, with Devon Levi, Tristan Jari, apparently was scheduled to start anyways. But, you know, he's played pretty well the last couple starts, but I don't, you know, again, he's a guy that
Starting point is 00:17:45 still has to earn more confidence with the group. He's working his way back, but still has to earn it, right? Yeah, I'm still taking the over. I know what you're saying. I just, the Leafs don't know how to play it tight. They just don't have that personality. So, no matter who's in that,
Starting point is 00:18:03 Connor Hella Buck, in Jersey, or whoever, I don't know if there's going to be not a lot of chances and goals in this game. Bless you. That's fair. You did see me sneeze, did you? Johnny, initial reaction to the Connor Hallibuck stuff. Tell us. So I did a hit this morning.
Starting point is 00:18:22 I gave five teams that he could have gone to. Jersey was one of the five. And so I'm not terribly surprised. When I heard Jersey, as it leaked out and there weren't players, yet named. I sort of scroll through who, who. And I'm like, yeah, Dawson Mercer, Nucco Dawes, and other stuff. Those are
Starting point is 00:18:42 the two things I thought of. So again, not surprised. I don't know anything about Comand. He's a first round pick recently, so it's like the equivalent of first round pick. Buxtad's a serviceable guy down the middle. I guess it's, in a sense, it's not star-driven. Like, who's the
Starting point is 00:19:00 big catch? I don't know anything about Comand, the prospect. So maybe he's really good. Dawson Mercer is a very good middle six player, but he's not a star first liner. They got quantity. They got some quality. Dawes can help them in net with their depth. Noodle's going to test to that. But the other thing
Starting point is 00:19:16 that I thought of was and I don't know if this mattered but it did cross my mind. The two major pieces, or the three major pieces are Mercer Dawes and that command. None of them are American. I don't want to make this about an American Canadian thing.
Starting point is 00:19:32 But they got two Canadian NHL players. is one who signed up for long-term in Mercer and a Swedish prospect. I don't know if that matters. I don't know what front offices are thinking as far as if they could have one versus the other. They want the best player, I'm sure. But the fact that they got a couple Canadian kids as the primary pieces coming back right now is probably not lost of them. Mike Johnson. Mike, question, do you think it's more likely that Connor Hallibuck returns and plays at a Vezina level or he plays more like he did last season?
Starting point is 00:20:02 I mean, I want to split the difference. It's probably somewhere, he's probably better than last year, but not as good as the MVP years. But I've had to pick one of two, like this year. He's probably closer to the Vesina level than he was last year for the short term. Once he gets up and running,
Starting point is 00:20:23 assuming good health and, you know, give him a week or two, however long noodles thinks he will take. But he went through what, four or five years of Vesina caliber play, even if he didn't win it every year. Something close to it.
Starting point is 00:20:36 And then he had one year where he wasn't terrible. He just wasn't quite as good. I still think it's probably more likely in the short term. He gets back to something close to that Vesina level. And then I don't know about four years from now, but maybe the next year or two, three, he probably gets back close to that. And Jersey's been searching for consistency in net.
Starting point is 00:20:53 They thought they had it in Markstrom. They did not. Jake Allen's been good there. But Jersey's a good team. I know O is dug into their underlying numbers and they're strong. They're one of those teams that can fully that way with good goaltending. in that metro, they feel like they can do some things. So I see why it makes sense for them to go there, and I expect them to be good.
Starting point is 00:21:15 First of all, they can't do squat unless they want to play grown-ass man hockey, which they're not familiar with as of yet. Anyway, back to the Winnipeg Jets in Halibuck. If you were running the Winnipeg Jets, and you can have control over game ops, and you had the ability to go up to the guy playing the piano up in the thing that ran the Jumbotron, would you say to him, don't even think about doing a tribute video?
Starting point is 00:21:42 Because we had a talk earlier. They're stupid. You're not sincere with them. You don't want to say welcome back. So don't do the tribute video. Hashtag no video Winnipeg Jets. It's not the worst thing you've ever said, though, because what you're saying is factually correct.
Starting point is 00:22:02 You are right. There's no part of that organization that wants to say thank you. No. Thank you for your, not now. Maybe three years from now, but not now. Not when he comes back for the first time. The cuts are still too fresh. And you want it out of here.
Starting point is 00:22:18 And so we don't want to celebrate you because we're not feeling like doing that. Maybe later, but not now. But I think what the concern would be, and as a guy running the organization, you got to worry about the fallout of these sort of things. What's the PR fallout of you not doing it? Nothing. Is the juice worth to squeeze?
Starting point is 00:22:36 No, around the league. And listen, Winnipeg is not the only team like this, but they also have to worry about the forest for the trees. They have to have a reputation around the league of being a team that treats their guys really well. You don't want to give anybody. When a guy leaves the organization, you're not giving a video, doesn't mean you don't treat your players well. This guy asked to leave.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Every commercial break, I would play him letting in bad goals. I love that idea. I love that. I love that you're my assistant GM for that, oh. I love your spirit. I want to harness it and channel it to my guys, but as your boss, I'm going to say, you know what? We're going to give them a 30 seconds
Starting point is 00:23:22 because we don't want the articles being around. The Jets are vindictive against players who don't like them. We need to cater to the perception of our team. That would never happen. I think what's going to happen here, guys, is the timeline lines up that he, will be available the week later in the week after that Winnipeg game where he does not play and he may not be on the trip.
Starting point is 00:23:45 That's where, unless, I mean, Johnny, if this guy's been skating every day and that, is there a chance he's playing tomorrow or Tuesday type of thing? No. I mean, no, they wouldn't risk it physically. They got to get him in for a week or two up and running and taking shots in Texas fitness and get this physical done and all that sort of stuff. And if there's any chance of him getting a. load management day off from traveling to Winnipeg,
Starting point is 00:24:10 they'll take it. They're going to keep them out of there this year if they can. If there's any way to not have them be in around there. He's starting November 10th, Johnny. He's starting November 10th. He has to start. November 10th, I mean, unless there's a setback, yes. And you know what? Let's be honest. As an athlete with the pride that we have, he wants that game.
Starting point is 00:24:31 And he wants to stick it right to Winnipeg. He wants to go in there and pitch a 38 safe shut out and say, this is what you're missing, I'm out. So yes, it would be, it would, cowardly is not the right word. It would be surprising if he was available and somehow did not play. That would be not very competitive, which is not what we are. Mike, if he does play, how do you think the reception, Jets fans give him will compare to the reception that Brady could chuck got from Ottawa?
Starting point is 00:25:01 It'll be the same. It'll be the same, consistent and loud and negative. The only difference I have is that he's a goaltender, so he doesn't ever really touch the puck, except for a save. So do they boo every save? He's never going to carry it or handle it where they can kind of rise to the moment. They'll cheer every goal against. They'll boo every save.
Starting point is 00:25:24 But he also won't be involved in strums. The Brady dynamic was interesting because it was very clearly, like, no backing off your former teammate slash friend if he is your friend. It was like him going after Pinto and him, going after Batherson and Stutzler, the conversation with Matthew. All of that was unique to position players. You don't get that with Hellebuck? Is Mark Schafe going to run them behind the net?
Starting point is 00:25:47 Is that Trevor, you know, is that the Bauer kid going to take a stab out of him in those crease? Like, they probably won't do that. So it's a bit different. But the fans will be there early and they'll be loud and negative and creative and relentless. And they should be, to O's point, they should be. Yeah. It's, you know what, I thought Ottawa did a great job. We were talking about it last hour.
Starting point is 00:26:10 Like I thought, and so did Brady, and so did everybody involved. Everybody played their role perfectly. Like, that was the thing. I don't know how Winnipeg could top that. The only thing is the guys, what you're talking about, maybe on the Jumbotron showing bad goals of him giving up. Playoff highlights. I do think there is, I think there's one thing that was lost kind of under the radar of what Ottawa did.
Starting point is 00:26:35 and I don't know if this was on purpose or not, but Jake Sanderson coming back, and they released that video on Twitter saying he's back, and, you know, and I was almost like... And wants to win. And wants to win, it wants to be or wants to win type of thing. I thought that was kind of like strategically placed out there just as a nugget. I thought that was brilliant.
Starting point is 00:26:56 And noodles, they had a tribute for Lars Eller. And he got a standing ovation. And it was a massive roar, standing ovation, also so her. Larry's like, what's me? What are we doing here? That was tremendous as well.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Well, we've got the Quinn Hughes return on Sunday, too. So that's coming up. And a heritage classic in Winnipeg between Winnipeg and Montreal, obviously Toronto and Edmonton tomorrow night. So it should be a great weekend of hockey. MJ, enjoy it up there in cottage country.
Starting point is 00:27:26 Look at that idyllic sunset behind you. Man, I guess not quite. That's pretty. Getting close. It's called a rich guy. It's getting close. That's right.
Starting point is 00:27:37 Well, is there green screen back there. Yeah, that's right. Thank you, Mike. All right, fellas. All right, you too. That's Mike Johnson. Join us on the Maple Toyota hotline. It's time to Toyota.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Check out the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra pickup trucks. Both available is hybrids, Maple Toyota, and your Canada's Wonderland in the Maple Auto Mall. So quickly, you know what? You brought up, and like, is Vancouver going to have the same reaction as Ottawa and Winnipeg? No. Not quite as negative, but there will be negativity in the building. But to get to the Brady level, that's rare. Well, what's going to happen, guys?
Starting point is 00:28:14 You know the Vancouver crowd is going to say, we got to step up. Because the whole talk around the league was how the Ottawa crowd blew it, like they blew it out of the park. But I guess we were talking about reasoning. What's different than Quinn than Brady than, you know, I guess they're all kind of a little bit different. I think Quinn went to them and said, I'm not going to extend, so you might as well trade me.
Starting point is 00:28:38 Yeah, I think the difference is that Vancouver is kind of a tire fire right now. Otto is still in a competitive window. Quinn, I think... When Brock Besser of all people start giving it to his team like he did, you got problems. There's... I don't know, Matt. I'm going to watch myself on this one. They're one of the worst teams I've ever seen.
Starting point is 00:28:56 There is a little concern there. The thing is, though... A little, Jamie. Like, make a transaction. They're throwing Lanken in the next one. He looks like a road hockey goalie some nights. They're just ripping everything by that guy. I know.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Get a different goalie. Your guy, well, they picked up Maryland and on waivers. They're young, but your guy Patterson's had a nice start to the season. Who cares? They stink. They do. When's Devcloth coming back? Like, is he coming back?
Starting point is 00:29:24 I think there's whispers of him on the horizon. Oh, there we go. Yes. All right. Thatcher, making his return to Vancouver. I would love to, but, you know, I'd love to. But, you know, I'd love to see him come back, but what is he going to come back to? Yeah, that could be tough sledding for Thatcher, Demko, if and when he returns.
Starting point is 00:29:40 You know, it said, what I read the other day, it said they were hopeful he would return before Christmas. So that's, I don't know what that means. Two months away, potentially. He's probably, you know what, no worries. I'll be ready when I'm ready. It's a little tough time in front of that Vancouver defense. It's hour two of overdrive. The Overdrive NFL picks coming up.
Starting point is 00:30:02 I've got Brian's picks and Al's Brothers picks was in contact with Al's brother I think he's in Malta or Italy or something on his honeymoon. I've been really enjoying following along Al's Instagram stories plus maybe some stories from the wedding noodles you and I were at Al's Brothers wedding and actually was alerted that there could be a video
Starting point is 00:30:18 coming out with me and Steph our boss featured prominently so maybe we'll get to that on the other side and additionally. Yeah I'm very concerned in addition to the NFL picks. Hour 2 here on overdrive continues. I really want to thank Lee On Twitter for sending me this note, he said,
Starting point is 00:30:37 Oh, Doug, do you think the Vegas Golden Knights with George McPhee and Kelly McCrimmon would do a tribute video if someone told them, I want to be traded, and 10 days later? They would say, stuff it, and there's no way in hell there's a video. Everyone's so nice, like, oh, we want to make it look like we treat our players good. When a guy comes back after demanding a trade, it has. It's nothing to do with the way you treat players. He told you to piss off. That's the bottom line.
Starting point is 00:31:08 It has nothing to do with being nice. No tribute video. Sorry, not happening. What if they did a negative tribute video? Yes. Jamie, I already told you. No tribute video between commercial breaks. Play some tunes and show every brutal goal he's ever led in.
Starting point is 00:31:24 So that's a negative tribute video? You want it out. You're the one that wanted out. If that's the way you want out, then we're going to show you a little song. You're absolutely on to something here. And again, this is not something that happens all that often in the NHL, a player of this level, requests to trade. Again, it very rarely happens, although these days it seems like it happens a lot.
Starting point is 00:31:45 And, of course, Dylan Larkin, it's still lingering there. The Brady thing is, again, that was a whole offseason, and they've been talking about it for months. And Ottawa finally it led to eventually them giving a bit trivia video. But this is going to be really fresh, right? November 10th for Hella Buck. You got traded on October 23rd. So that's two and a half weeks?
Starting point is 00:32:02 I wonder if there's a tribute video. I'm not certain there will be. I think you lead the charge, Joe, and you got to make sure that Winnipeg stays in line here. Well, we've got to do a poll. Tribute video or not? Or negative tribute video. I think that would be, that is really buying into the deal. So we're doing a three-option poll.
Starting point is 00:32:18 No video, video, or negative video. Well, yeah, tribute video, which is flowers to him. Thank you very much. Why would you say thank you to a guy that said, get me the hell out of here? It doesn't even make sense. He won a heart trophy for you and three business, the guy who's been the face of your franchise for a decade. And believe me, there's been some lean years there in Winnipeg where keep in mind, and I'm not defending him, but this is a guy that did sign a long-term extension and said, I want to stay.
Starting point is 00:32:51 Now, he didn't stay. I get that. But he did stay a couple years. But there was a point where Nick Eilers left and everybody was like, okay, Shifley and Helibuck, they're out of here. And what's going to happen to Morrissey, what's going to happen with Connor? And Shifley and Hellebuck put their hands up and said, we'll sign long-term deals. Now, it's changed.
Starting point is 00:33:13 I get that. Look at it this way, Jamie. There's this guy on the PGA tour. His name is Toasty. His last name's Toasty. He's a lunatic. Apparently he's crazy. His caddy was so fed up with his garbage.
Starting point is 00:33:26 He quit on this guy on the ninth fairway. He said, stuff it. Here's the bib. here's the bag. I'm not caddying for you anymore. Do you think if, like, do you think if, so the caddy quit on the player? Do you think the player if he won the tournament, he'd say in the reception for the trophy, he'd be like, hey, catty, come here.
Starting point is 00:33:44 Here's a video. No, he wouldn't. He'd say, you quit on me. Go screw yourself. That's true. He wouldn't give him half because the guy worked for nine-old. He wouldn't give him half. No.
Starting point is 00:33:54 You owe nothing as far as recognizing a player when the guy says, get me the hell out of here. No way, no how. None. Then that's where I just think in today's world where people are so creative on social media and with AI and everything, it would be legendary if Winnipeg was like, we'll give you a tribute video, but it's going to be what we think of things right now. Exactly. I think this is something that definitely needs to be tracked. And I can guarantee this is going to pick up traction in the Winnipeg market because this is something that is a very creative idea. I'll guarantee you. The fans want it. Fans would
Starting point is 00:34:34 much prefer them tear into Hellebuck than give them this warm reception. If you ask just your everyday who's not crazy like us, just a passionate Winnipeg Jet fan, if you said, do you think you should put up a video tribute? They would say absolutely not. You know what? Absolutely
Starting point is 00:34:50 not. At some point, we should reach out to Sarah Oleski or Jamie Thomas or somebody out of Winnipeg there and just go, this is what we're thinking. Maybe Sarah should come on next. week or something like that and really get the pulse of the market what do you think call it right now what the hell are we going to wait till next week for we do we do we do have to get we do have to get the overdrive NFL picks in and my understanding you guys
Starting point is 00:35:15 took new england last night is that right here's what we're going to do rip off the picks take a break doogie get on the horn call sarah or lesky all right let's go let's do it dogs is not putting his feet up over there this guy's working the phones right now all right so So, Hazenbro is up by three after their victory last night with the Bears. Great performance by Caleb Williams, man. He might be a real deal, man. I think so. I think so.
Starting point is 00:35:40 I think so I think the Bears could be real deal, the real deal of five and two. So the team Hazenbro has the Paris game. That should go well. They love that one. Yeah, they love the international games. And the Saints are three-point dogs against the Steelers. Hazenbro on New Orleans plus the points. So that is the first pick of the four.
Starting point is 00:36:00 Owen Wilson, you guys have this AFC North Battle between Cincinnati and Baltimore. I know Luke's on the Argos Alloets call tonight. I'm sure you guys have been communicating throughout the day. Where do you stand on Cincinnati and Baltimore? Whatever he says. We haven't paid attention to it.
Starting point is 00:36:16 Whatever he says. He's on the Bengals. He's on the Bengals. Plus a point of a half. The Bengals crush my soul. The Bengals crush my soul. We are having a tough stretch right now. Yeah. I don't, whatever we seem to pick, it just doesn't go, it doesn't go right.
Starting point is 00:36:32 It's okay. It's okay. Maybe this is the turning point for you guys. Maybe this is the turning point. It's got to be the turning point. Hazenbro are on the Lions minus three against the Packers. So that's another divisional game. Detroit coming off a buy. And the last pick, KC. Seattle, the Kenneth Walker revenge game. It's going to be a spectacle. And Owen Wilson, where are you out of? Phil, film you on your thoughts here.
Starting point is 00:36:56 Just name the pick, AK. Kansas City plus two and a half in Seattle. battle. So that's going to be a great game. Some really, really fun games this week. I'm not sure where we stand with Sarah Oleski, but quickly, I did mention Al's brother who's in Malta or wherever on his honeymoon. I was alerted that. I'm not sure if you remember this, Jamie, from the wedding. I had a number of drinks that evening. I don't remember anything, frankly. But apparently there is a video of Al's brother doing the limbo under my tie with Steph holding my tie on the other side. and Al's brother is shirtless going underneath my tie doing the limbo.
Starting point is 00:37:33 And I'm very... I don't have this on TV. I don't have this video. I don't have this video. But that is what I've been told that this video does exist. And I'm going to kindly request whoever has it to delete it immediately. It needs to be wiped. Yeah, please.
Starting point is 00:37:45 Well, yeah, we can't put that on TV. I woke up to a picture of Al's brother with no tarpon. We left in a reasonable time. It's a glorious bit. I woke up to a picture of Al's brother and his lovely bride. she's dancing and he's got no tarp on and I don't know what he's doing. He might be doing the limbo, but it was that things got out of hand, I think, after I last. They did.
Starting point is 00:38:08 It was a glorious evening. It really was, and they're celebrating in Malta, as they should. I have my best bets ahead of the Wizards Raptors game. Also, game one of the World Series tonight. The Argonauts, the final regular season game in the season for the boatman tonight against Montreal before they begin their playoff campaign next week on how. Halloween, a 1 o'clock game on Halloween, the opponent to be determined, based on how the West goes this week. So we'll look ahead to the weekend as we conclude things here on Overdrive after this.
Starting point is 00:38:37 Mail it in Friday is brought to you by Boston Pizza, Canada's favorite sports bar. Enjoy $15 lunch at BP where you get an entree of sight and a drink and you'll get it all in 20 minutes or less. A fast lunch doesn't have to be fast food. See you for a $15 fast lunch at your local Boston pizza. Winding down here in the second hour of overdrive, Pironick-McClenin-O-Neil. for today's best bets powered by Fandul. Make your picks and assembly. Same game parlay in seconds on the Fandul's sportsbook app.
Starting point is 00:39:03 I think the Raps minus 8 and a half. Kauai 25 plus and street clothes over 22 and a half. That is 7 to 1 on Fandul in a same game parlay. Strong start for street clothes. 34 points in the first game. And the Raptors don't really have big men to contain him. How long do you think street clothes is going to last there? He doesn't make it until Christmas.
Starting point is 00:39:26 Oh, no. No, no. He'll be traded. Yeah, for the same thing. Yeah, for sure. That's probably the worst nickname in pro sports. Is it not? I think it's the worst nickname in pro sports. But it's so appropriate.
Starting point is 00:39:38 It's so appropriate. I know. I know. I mean, Kauai Leonard, you know, in the last seven years, he has average 47 games a year. So it's not like exactly, he's been in the lineup every night, but he deserves. He deserves the furthest thing from. But I'm fired up to watch this.
Starting point is 00:39:57 Today's best bets powered by Fandul, same game parlays, are available for every NBA game on the Fandul Sportsbook app. Police Play Responsibly 19 plus, physically located in Ontario. I can report Dugie has reached out to Sarah O'Leskey. No response at this moment. Of course. So she big-legged us.
Starting point is 00:40:15 Maybe just Dugie. She's an adult probably having dinner with her family or something like that. She's not sitting there going, geez, I'm waiting for the call from overdrive. You know, like on a ridiculous topic. I mean, actually, it's not a ridiculous. You could have called Bainzy. Could it call Bainzzi. That's true.
Starting point is 00:40:32 Or Jamie Thomas, there's lots of people out in Winnipeg. Yeah. Like, I just, I feel like we're on to something, but it would be slightly disrespectful to put out like a trash video. You know what I mean? Like, who does trash videos anymore, like trashing somebody? Like, I don't know. You know what I would do?
Starting point is 00:40:54 This is what I would do I would come up with some type of sketch where I would say please quiet take a minute just one second pay attention to the Jumbotron and like have a camera
Starting point is 00:41:09 recording the guy about to play the tribute video and then have Dustin Bufflin come in and rip the TV out of the wall and throw it and smash it into a hundred pieces and just say no tribute video The Jets would win 12-1 that night if that's what they did. Wazily
Starting point is 00:41:25 Winnipeg Jets Yeah Everyone would be fired up It would be like just If you could do something With how creative social media teams are All kinds of fun stuff All kinds of fun stuff
Starting point is 00:41:39 And here's some advice for the Winnipeg Jets Which I think the Ottawa Senators probably should have used Don't go for dinner with Connor Hallibuck The night before the game I don't think that's happening If you do It might not But if you do
Starting point is 00:41:52 I didn't have a problem with the guys telling you about it, but it's just a lot of times you just keep things to yourself because where there is vitriol, like these guys, a lot of them are pretty close. And, you know, guys move on. I was close with guys who asked for trade, guys who moved on and all that. You end up catching up with them at some point.
Starting point is 00:42:14 This is a little bit different. I get it because it's so polarizing. But a lot of those guys lived with Brady. They grew up with Brady, all of that. type of stuff. You know, I think Stutzlid may have done it a different way. He wasn't,
Starting point is 00:42:28 apparently, I saw Keith Yanel say this today. Stutzl wasn't even invited to the dinner. Yeah. Which is weird because I think they're quite close. Like, you know, Brady and...
Starting point is 00:42:39 I don't think they've spoke, I mean, this is just Twitter rumors. They haven't spoke since he got traded. Yeah. I mean, honest to God, I cover that team.
Starting point is 00:42:47 I'm there around them a lot. I've never asked that question, to be honest. Like, I've never even tried to figure that one out. I think guys, Travis Green says his best. He's like, that trade was months ago.
Starting point is 00:42:58 Like, we've moved on. And I think they say the right things. The other night, I think they're happy they got through it. They're happy that they won the game. Unfortunately, they lost Linus Allmark, which is a big loss because, you know, Samuel Aerson is not Linus Allmark. So Ayrson's got an opportunity. He's got to play well against the Rangers
Starting point is 00:43:14 tomorrow. Tomorrow night, also the Leafs in Edmonton. Like, what's your expectation for McDavid against this Leafs defense, which is banged up. They're giving up a bunch of goals. Dude, I'm telling you. Over under two and a half points for McDavid. Are you crazy, bro? It's over under is five. I'm not kidding. No, it's not.
Starting point is 00:43:33 Noodles. I don't know what we could put on the line on Monday, but this guy's getting five points on Saturday. I know it. You're not stopping this guy. Why wouldn't he? He just got five points against the Carolina Hurricanes. What the hell is he going to do against the bashed up tired group that just flew across the country? He might go nuts on Saturday night. I don't know. I feel like everybody raises to the level.
Starting point is 00:43:58 Like it'll be, I think it should be a pretty good game. I will say sometimes the Leafs they go in and they have some good performances in Evanston. Matthews is dialed in, usually scores. They've had some success out there. There was a stretch, I believe it was during the COVID season where they went out there and they spanked them a lot. Three in a row.
Starting point is 00:44:16 Three games in a row. I think they had three games. I don't know if it was back to, I don't think the, I don't think the could do that. In COVID, did they have three back to back to back? Oh, they had all kinds of stuff. It was all the types of weird stuff. But they won three in a row, and I think two were shutouts, and three different goalies played. I believe it was like Freddie and then Jack Campbell and then somebody else was in the net there too. It was crazy. Well, the Leafs have the league's best penalty kill and the oilers somehow don't have the best
Starting point is 00:44:45 power play in the NHL, which bogg was my mind. I think that's Utah. But the oil did have three p bgues last night and I would probably guess they find a way to score on the power play. What do you think the power play coach for the Oilers says in meetings? What the hell is he going to say? Just hey just pick up the puck and go skate around and pass it
Starting point is 00:45:04 their open guy and shoot the end of the end of the day. Try not to stay out for a minute 45 like they just stay out as long as they need to get it done. That's really what it is. Gentlemen, it's been a treat to be with you for the last couple of hours. Thank you very much for having you. Been our best show all year. I don't know what else is saying. I tend to agree. Marconi Awards coming up.
