Also known as Al's brother
Demi-God Al's brother
Demi-God Al's brother. Yeah, there's no way I garnered that much hype
Let's be honest because what we saw last night was incredible at the Bell Center
How did that guy get like I get it?
Everyone knew the guy had skill. He was a first-round pick. Yeah, but how did he get hyped up?
Is that some kind of marketing thing where it was like this guy's the next Gila Fleur because that was incredible
You couldn't take your got your eyes off that guy
Everything all the buildup was incredible
like there's been a lot of hype because of what he's been doing in Russia.
And he went fifth overall and by all accounts he dropped quote unquote in the draft because
there were concerns he would stay in the KHL for years.
And it also is a perfect storm because Montreal is still alive.
Yeah.
Be very different if they had 68 points right now.
There'd be hype but not to the same level. You're marrying the arrival of the future and the present. Exactly, that's
what you're doing. And then for Demidov, I thought what the coolest moment of the
night was the warm-up when he did the rookie lap, no helmet, and the place was
packed. Yeah. Like there were 20,000 people watching him do a toro with no helmet on at the Bell Center
And as great as the goal was and that was a phenomenal
Oh, the assist was better in my opinion the dangle and then to find was a new hook. I think
Unbelievable, but he was doing it all night, too
Yes, he was he was dancing all little touch passes and I thought he was going to get elevated to the first line.
I was like, this guy's unreal.
What in a way I think is beneficial for the Habs is that it clouded the fact that they
choked away two points last night.
You cannot be up two nothing against that team at home when you have to win and choke
away a point like that.
Like that was insane.
That was crazy. And Damidov at home at
that. Exactly. Like you're playing for something. You have a two nothing lead on a team in Chicago
that is just begging to leave and you allow them not only to get back into the game, steal a point
from you. It was that that's disappointing. I was one goal away from clicking when i'm doing my sports routine at night
days are getting pump for cop i'd split i i go to the montreal i'm like one more
goal here
i'll go back to the jays to see if they can mount a comeback mean
and then it was just bang bang to to and then they were down on my keep can't do
this again chicago man well if you get chicago at home
the clinch this against Chicago man well if you get Chicago at home to clinch it's literally
a gift from you have to do it especially up to nothing yes you have to win that
game it's shades of the the Pittsburgh Penguins a few years ago where it was the
same thing remember Florida and Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh lost to
Chicago when they were tanking and they end up missing the playoffs yes and
listen the Habs are still in the driver's seat.
They have Carolina on Thursday night and Carolina, even with a depleted roster,
is a dangerous thing.
Yes.
And yet Carolina is not playing for anything.
There's a lot of teams in the league, like Vegas is in Calgary tonight.
They don't even want to play.
Edmonton was at home last night.
They had no interest in playing.
We'll get to that. But Columbus has still got to win both games in regulation
to even have a chance to catch Montreal. They're in Philly tonight and then they have the Islanders,
I believe.
Philly at home, they'll play it like Philly's got some heat right now where they're like,
Torz is gone. Let's rip home some goals. So I don't think Philly's going to be a cakewalk,
but you would think Columbus is gonna win that game
Well, you would think but you want last month
You would have thought Montreal was gonna win last night exactly
So it really would suck because I think everyone wants to see Montreal get into the dance
They want to get into the playoffs keep seeing this demodav kid play especially what they've been through else brother
Like it's looking like we said they were in like 10 days ago
Oh, yeah, they're in man. Like there's nothing's gonna happen to win like one of their last five games
They would have been good and now we'll be able to three in a row here
They lost to Ottawa, Toronto and then Chicago last night and all they needed was one more point out of that whole thing
Yeah, and they're in and they play out. It's like what yet? Listen, they're running out of steam a little bit
Yeah, everything broke their way like this is not you know one of the best teams in the league
We're talking about they're chasing the second wild card in the east so they have flaws and we saw it last night
We've seen it this week. What is interesting though?
because if you would have if we would have said Montreal it could play like an
Arbitration quickly you tell Montreal. Okay, you know, you're gonna have tell Montreal okay you know you're gonna
have everything break for you and you're gonna make the playoffs but you're gonna
get bounce the first round you'd probably be pretty excited absolutely you
would take that but today point totals from those odds put that board back up
there like some of those teams that thought they were good he's just junk I
know you're talking the Rangers Boston Boston, Buffalo still not getting over the
Hops. Even like New Jersey, look at New Jersey, they have 89 points. Yeah. That's like the
old NFC South. And it seems like they've had 89 points for two months. Yeah they've had
89 points since the Four Nations. It's been a weird season for Jersey. Yeah, Sid has.
85 points after the Four Nations, Sheldon Keefe was like let's bring this home. They've
got 89 now. Everyone start load managing we're in and like look at that
discrepancy there's a 10-point buffer between them and Carolina and then
another 10 points to Washington. Like Detroit figured they were gonna make the
playoffs Rangers definitely Islanders probably thought they were gonna go in
Pittsburgh had this idea they were gonna contend again this year don't know why
and then Boston at the bottom is insane, but they just pulled the pin at the
deadline. Probably the smart thing to do. But those are some crazy totals. And we said it a bunch
the last couple of weeks, Hayes, if you couldn't get in, especially in the Metro this year, you
are garbage. 90 points. You just had to get to 90. That's it And listen the Habs in in the second wild card probably not much
Different mostly and get to 91 right like you're gonna have multiple teams into the playoffs with like 90 91 points
That's a third wild card in baseball with 83 wins
But the question is gonna that's just a that's a nothing season
Well, I should be a slam dunk year where it's like nothing to worry about here, fellas.
We're going in this year.
Yeah.
You would think so.
Man.
You would think so.
I'm curious though, like if Montreal squanders this, how they'll look at the season.
Cause I mean, yes, at the beginning of the year, you would absolutely took the playoffs
no matter what.
But now if you, a week ago, you're thinking we got like a 90% chance of making the playoffs,
just got to win one or two more games the rest of the year But they lose out and Columbus gets in now all of a sudden you got a super sour taste in your mouth about how that
Season ended. I even look on it. It's heartbreaking through heartbreaking
You get so much street credit if you get in this year because there's a chance there might be a step back next
Absolutely, they're not that good. So take advantage and give the fans give everybody around yourself something to be happy about
You've got to get in you've got to get in and again, it's Montreal and now you got dem it off there
You got Hudson playing you've got Suzuki and Caulfield rocking you got you got such good mojo
If you're Montreal right clarify Columbus has to win in reg
They have to win both games in regulation and Montreal has to lose their last game
Yeah both games in regulation and Montreal has to lose their last game. So it's still in the court of the Montreal Canadiens.
The Habs are still in the driver's seat here and I think they're going to punch their ticket
but I'll tell you what man, that Demidov, that's the best first impression I can think
of since probably Matthews back in the day.
When you consider, now this was more pressure because of what's on the line on jumping on a moving ship yes exactly
like math matthews is a completely different
story because it was four goals it was just unbelievable but you know he was on
the team he was there for training camp
it's game one of eighty two
this is game eighty
or game eighty one one game eighty one at the bell center easy for him to be
overwhelmed by the moment, the crowd,
everything and
bumbled the puck and been behind the play and been a mess. Yeah. And he wasn't. He was the best player on the ice.
He was outstanding and he points in like what 10 minutes into the game? He's gonna have some growing pains.
He did on the third goal. He mailed in the back check pretty badly there and there's gonna be some warts in his game.
He's a young kid. he's 19 years old, but
this is we've been talking about this on our show for a long time and I've been talking to people in Montreal.
We were there in September, like they are craving
superstars in Montreal and he has not been anointed that yet. Let's not get crazy and I do want to address that because
Toronto gets this rep. Oh, plan the the parade, oh here he is greatest player
of all time. The Habs are getting their, they're getting their their flowers right
now. Demi-God is a pretty pretty good nickname for Superstar. And much of all Canadian fans are watching TSN for 24 hours, all you see is
Demidov and the Habs, they get their their cake and eat it too.
All right it's not only about Toronto being over the top with buzz and
excitement and you should be excited and it's always only about toronto being over the top with buzz and excitement and you should be excited
and it's always ridiculous when the rest of the country's like all the fans
being excited
why wouldn't you be your favorite team you want to be excited
habs fans have a right to be excited
and they have been
watching the rest of the country in particular i think
in this kind of era of superstardom
where you have mcdavid you got dry so do you got matthews marner neelander tovarez you got quinn hughes you got Dry Sutter, you got Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, you got Quinn Hughes, you got Halibuck, you got
Kichuk and Stootsla and they've been waiting to be able to get in on the
party and Suzuki's a really good player. Caulfield really good player but now
you got Lane Hudson and maybe Demidov and it's like maybe you're jumping into
that party too as like okay we're a part of the superstar era now if it gets to that point and last night was just an incredible scene
and we'll see if the Habs get in and tonight it carries over because Calgary's
at home against Vegas right and they're trying to stay alive Vegas is not sending
anyone up to even play now but st. Louis and Minnesota are both in action st.
Louis has got Utah at home and min's got Anaheim at home.
If they win those games, it's over for Calgary,
but the chase is on.
And as for the Maple Leafs,
you just gotta get a point tonight.
You gotta get a point tonight
because Tampa's playing Florida
and it became a meaningless game last night
because Florida lost to New York.
So I don't believe they can catch Tampa anymore.
So I'm curious what that game's gonna look like
where the Panthers have nothing to play for. I
don't think Florida Panthers. I haven't seen Florida even sending a Ross.
Well it's probably like the Edmonton Kings game. Go ahead send a message but
if you lose 4-0 it doesn't do anything for the Leafs. Like unless they win the
game or take a point from Tampa the Leafs are gonna have to do it themselves
tonight. Which is what should be expected. Very similar to have chicago last night with all the respect to
buffalo
it is rolled through for to got pumped a couple times they have not been close
to the playoffs in fourteen years the lease have a reason to play tonight
stores is in that go and get two points lock up the battle of ontario and then
mail in the rest of the week it's an odd it's another opportunity
to get rid of one of the worst phrases in the history
of pro sports. And you've said it, and you've said it, and I've said it, and probably everyone
in this building has said it. The phrase is, that's the leafiest thing ever. And you know
what goes along with that's the leafiest thing ever. Because, and they're trying to chip
away this year, they've got a different coach, and people
are starting to give them some cred for playing well in tight games.
Because what was the leafiest thing ever in the past?
They'd blow tight games.
One nothing game against the Montreal Canadiens at home.
A zero zero game going into the third.
The leafiest thing ever would be to lose that game and the
Leafiest thing ever on top of that would be to go to Carolina and give smoke for nothing. Yep
But they're chipping away at not doing the leafiest thing ever
Yeah
And one of the big leafiest things ever would be to go to Buffalo and get your ass handed to you because of all the ghosts
And goblins and Buffalo. in Buffalo and the stupid things,
ugly face shooting it into his own net,
losing there all the time. It was the leafiest thing ever to go into Buffalo and get killed.
Yeah, you're right.
So keep chipping away at erasing that phrase and it's gonna be a really difficult phrase to get rid of.
Winning the Stanley Cup might be the only thing ever to erase
the phrase, that's the leafiest thing ever. Yeah, you're right. But they have to keep
chipping it away and it's like baby steps to really grab that phrase and throw it in
the garbage. You're right. That is a phrase. Oh my God. All you got to do is say it and
people can close their eyes and go, I know what that means. Oh yeah. And I've seen it.
I'm living it again. I'm living it right now Dude, we could do a three-hour show on the leafiest things ever. Oh, so that goes into law ranking blowing series. Yeah, AIDS. Oh
Ballard like it the the if we did a show called the leafiest show ever
Yeah, we'd have to like dress in funeral. It would be the most depressing you're right
It'd be a black top like black suit black shirt. We would get dropped off in a hearse
That's right with Paul Bearer in the background.
Like THE Paul Bearer.
And you're right. It would... Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo something there. Then what are the divisions? That's saying, that slogan is cringeworthy. Oh yeah. And tonight is another example of it.
And tonight is another chance for them to knock it down.
Now the true test is coming in five days or six days.
But if you can go out on the...
Battle of Ontario, the leafiest thing ever from the ghosts of the past.
Oh yes.
We can't go down.
We can't hear Paul Bearer.
Don't bring this into existence right now. We're talking about killing that phrase.
We're killing Paul Bearer.
Yeah, we don't want to bring life into this phrase, and we don't want the Maple Leafs
to supply more of it, but you're right. And tonight is a chance for them to say, stuff
it Paul Bearer.
Yeah, go to hell Paul Bearer.
Take a lap Paul Bearer, because you're not going to be a part of this anymore and
Stolars is going everyone else is playing for the most part. Yeah, Greg Borube was talking about Ekman Larson and McCabe today and
I think he's playing coy like I I think you know, he's not coming
I don't know if he's good if they're gonna be ready that feels like gamesmanship and
But playing if it's the Stanley Cup playoffs
that's the whole point like you don't need them tonight they're not gonna play
on Thursday but they're gonna be ready for the playoffs I would I would be
surprised if they're not but if he's not being a hundred percent coy if there's a
chance one or both are going to miss playoff action that is significant like
that that is a big big chunk out of your defense core, two veterans, two guys who have played really well this
year. And then you're forced into playing, you got to call
someone up, which they'll be able to do when the cap ranks
fires after game 82. But you're talking like Marshall Raffae,
and Philippe Myers playing games in the playoffs, if those
two can't go like that we'll cross
that bridge when we get to it but I think if you're a Leaf fan and you hear
Marube speak on it today you're hoping what he's doing is playing chess. I would
imagine so I thought last week even said there's a chance McCabe plays at some
point before the season's over if he's not playing tonight I suppose that means
potentially on Thursday but if they were saying that last week I mean the guy
hasn't skated since so I don't really know if there's been a chance to be a
setback you would think that he'll be ready to go for game one and that would
be the one guy that I think would seriously worry me because he's been a
massive part of this team success this year and kind of flipping that script
of playing that sound defensive game hard-nosed and going up against Ottawa
now that we it's nearly locked in that it's going to be Ottawa battle
That's a physical team. That's a team that likes to get up in your face. Jake mccabe
Will need to be in the lineup. Yes
And it'll be interesting like as much as the Leafs are playing coy to an extent with mccabe the sends are doing the same thing
With kichuk who hasn't played in a long time. Yeah, and the belief is he'll be ready
But will he be at 100?
Because if he's not like that's that's a big chunk to start the playoffs guys get hurt during the journey
But to start the playoffs, you know banged up or at 90% you can get down to 80% quick
Yeah, you hit that guy a couple of times and you know that that's going to be the plan
He's just said that done because he's a bull but
Yeah, we got a big one tonight in Buffalo you can hear
it right here on TSN radio watching on TSN 4 so we'll tee that up throughout
the afternoon Alice brother you're down at the Jays game last night yeah I was down at the
Dome they got to see Miles straw hit a home run that's about it
Miles straw has more home runs than Vladie jr. and Bo Bichette combined isn't
that incredible like it's it's I was thinking about it last night watching
that game because here he goes I am because up until yesterday
I already had enough of Hayes up until yesterday. It was awesome
Vlad E signed 500 million. This is great. And I'm a proponent of that. I like that. They kept their homegrown star
Yep, there's 17 games in it's it's getting ridiculous now how poorly these guys are playing and they are awful at the plate the two
Of them right now. I was sick to my stomach yesterday and it's funny I
was you know with some friends and I couldn't believe it but one man that's
your piss man they were both over for those they were terrible they were it
was awful but the fact that I don't know was it was it on Saturday offside that
the crowd gave laddie an absolute standing ovation his first at bat last night.
I think that's onside.
Listen, again-
For me, I'm sitting here, I'm like, since he signed his contract, he's done squat.
Well, and this is where I think it's gonna have to spin.
Like, you look at what's going on in New York right now with Juan Soto, and we'll get to that,
where he's complaining that he doesn't have Judge with him.
The Mets are 11 and 5.
Like, they're off to a really good start.
He actually came out and said, I don't have judge protection.
Yes.
He's like, well, basically, I don't know if there's audio of that or it was just, okay,
I think it was just the New York Post anyway.
He was, he was, he was asked like, are, are, are pitchers approaching you differently?
And he's like, well, yeah, cause I don't have judge behind me anymore.
And it did not go over well in New York. That's what I get to Hayes when I talk about situations where I mean you could set yourself
up for the next seven or eight years to hit in front of judge, make almost the exact same
amount of money but for what?
A certain amount of money you went to the Mets just for like...
I don't get it.
To get away from Judge.
Players don't fact like maybe he thought I love hitting in front of this guy but
I also want it to be my own show with the Mets. That's what I think. How stupid is that?
That's what I think. And then he has the audacity to even bring that up like like
you just I don't think players think enough about the situation they can be
successful in. Matthew Nyes is a prime example he's got to be looking looking at Austin Matthews, who's going to be here three more years guaranteed
after this year.
Mm-hmm.
So sign a bridge deal and say, I can be that guy's left winger.
You're probably still going to make some good cake.
I don't know what it's going to be.
But don't get pissy with this and screw around with it.
I can be Austin Matthews' left winger and still make great money.
Yeah.
For the next three years. And then after that that I could get paid again maybe he stays maybe I got a
circle back and do something different after that but Juan Soto I can hit in
front of judge for the next ten years it just it's the last guy on anyone wants
to hear anything from and I don't get a home run last night you can't make
excuses when you make seven hundred and sixty five million dollars wall just can't here's here's the way i would
approach it those he he is
technically just telling the truth of course they're going to attack you
differently about dude
lights no you can't say that exactly analysts can say it
people watching the team the manager can say hey listen there of course he's
gonna see some different pitches it's gonna be a little bit different he's not gonna get as
many down Broadway because the guys behind them they're not they're not
terrified of that guy right now right it's a bit of a shot at whoever's hit
behind him right now like it's basically who the hell are you and why is Aaron
Judge not behind me but no one wants to hear it from a guy who just made 765
million 16 games in you can't say well what do you want to me i mean they're not giving me what i'm looking
for because judges in here
as banana it's a crazy crazy comment to make and again that the metro eleven
and five they're off to a great start
and he's just kinda plod along he hasn't had a great starts been okay so i was
calling i would literally march down
about something like i ever hear something like that you again but for
seven hundred sixty five million you lost the right to say that new rule march down to that clubhouse and be like, I ever hear something like that from you again. For 765 million.
You lost the right to say that.
New rule, you're never allowed to say the name Aaron Judge
or the Yankees, you can't, nothing, it didn't exist.
You didn't play there.
You're a New York Met for the rest of your life
and you make whoever's sitting behind you work.
You make them pop and you make the guy in front of you pop
and it just, it's an astonishing comment,
but that's where I'm at with Vladdy in particular. Like now that you got the guy in front of you pop and it just, it's an astonishing comment. But that's where I'm at with Vlad E in particular.
Like now that you got the contract,
it's time to, you gotta get going here, man.
Like you're 17 games in, you have not hit a home run.
It's unreal.
Like it's, that's an astonishing statistic.
Miles Straw has more home runs than you.
You've gotta get going, man.
I know it's a long season,
but they're already 10% into the into the season like 20% comes quick
And then 30% like you're he's got to get going and last night
I thought him and Bo both of them their approach
And they got some tough pitchers coming up tonight tomorrow throughout the rest of the week
It who is that hillbilly chucking for the
Well, I just wheeled out there with his stash in his mullet and
was slicing and dicing. No, no through six? Yes. Until the homer? Yep. Miles Straugh broke
it up. You almost witnessed a no hitter at the dome last time. I'm looking at the, I
think it was the start of the fifth inning, I look over and I look up and I'm like, this
guy's only thrown 35 pitchers. Yep. Grant Holmes. We're in the fifth inning, I look over and I look up like, this guy's only thrown 35 pitches. Yep.
Grant Holmes.
When the fifth inning, he's thrown 35 pitches,
and like 28 of them were for strikes.
Yeah.
Like that guy was dealing last night.
Yes, he was.
Yeah, he was.
I saw something so outrageous too.
So the glove guy is one thing.
Right.
Eye paint guy?
That's a whole other ball game. Eye paint guy. He had
double? With the dome closed. Dome closed. There's not even any sun. There's no reason
for this. Double eye paint, both eyes with a Brett Laurie jersey. Brett Laurie? Brett
Laurie jersey. I like that guy. He had some pizazz. Brett Laurie? He was a lunatic out
there. He had a character. Remember how many Red Bulls? He would admit after the game, like I had five Red Bulls during the game. He was going nuts.
He was a jacked up guy. Yeah, they unleashed, that was a pretty good trade where they got
Donaldson for Laurie going the other way and other pieces. But yeah, eye black guy in general
is completely unacceptable. Maybe if you're lower bowl, game in the in the sun yeah maybe and i've been that if you're behind home plate when it's hot
it is scorching good but even that is what the hell you're talking bring
glasses that's what has the right to wear eyeglasses.
RCMP needs to be tracking him. I couldn't believe it. That guy's up to something and we need to know what's going on. I couldn't believe when I saw that that I just laid eyes on that and I'm like that is
Probably the most outrageous thing I've seen at a ballpark. Yeah, the the two sports we've talked about it
It's baseball and golf where you see
Like guys that they just they thought they could make it that guy thought he was making it in the majors
He played little league ball when he was 10 and 12 was He was probably a good player and Kitchener or something.
I've said it for years, man.
I don't care what, I don't know what the hell you think you're doing.
You do not wear golf shoes to a golf tournament if you're not teeing it up.
Never.
No.
Never.
Never.
Ever.
Ever.
Wear your casual shoes that you would wear to walk around.
I agree.
You are not wearing your golf shoes.
I know. I know. And you see it all the time You want grip for well there the explanation is you're walking up and down hills. Tell me you're a golf shoe guy
Oh, I'm not a golf shoe guy
However, at least I can look at it
And if especially if it's a little wet outside and you don't want to get your no runners all
Me I see but here's like these are this these of the pair shoes that i wear on a golf course i'm going to a golf course but you're not playing you don't
work speed i get a scotia bank arena have you're not on your gardens what are
you gonna where your sky's hockey skates right like if you go down to a raptor
game are you wearing jordans like high top basketball jordans thinking i could
be playing or i might walk on the court at some point that's the point there's
no such thing as thinking i could be do it I might walk on the court at some point. That's the point there's no such thing as thinking I could be doing it. You're not
doing anything. You're a spectator. You're a patron. You're a fan. And it's the same
thing with golf like glove guy. It's the same thing as I've pointed out for many
many years. If you're there with your kids totally different story. That's an
experience. They want to bring their glove. They want you to bring your glove.
If you're there as an adult the two of us or three of us are at the game and one of us has a glove
I'm sorry you that just is completely unacceptable behavior in society
If I had glasses on and I was walking to meet you guys for a Jays game
And I noticed one had paint under their eyes and the other had a glove
Now I know you didn't see me I turn around and I get in an uber and I go home
They without even a courtesy text. No, I'm not even saying I can't make it. I just would never be able to live
with myself walking in there with a guy with a baseball glove on. A grown man.
Ghosting. King Daddy Topper, he had a sign with him that said give it a whack and
when Vlad E stepped up to the plate he stood up and put the sign up that said
give it a whack. I could not believe that. I never saw him on TV the sign up that's a given while i could not believe i never saw him on t v last night
and that's the another person out in the bleachers you ever done that those
those twenty dollar bleacher tickets i haven't done not a bad setup yet they
have a bad that's on the dot as they've done as good of a job as you could do
with that place yeah
did you hear some with what the dome is they've done a really good job
this is going to cut deep.
One of our childhood heroes, Dougie Gilmore.
Oh no.
Don't.
No.
Stop talking.
I don't want to hear that.
I can't look at Doug Gilmore differently.
I don't want to have a different impression of Doug Gilmore.
It's the worst thing you've ever.
Don't tell me what it is.
He just sent me a note and says
i cut my grass and golf shoes up
up
cut
block his number is grass engulfed shoes walkers are
block his number first of all the amount of the leaves highest care cutting his
own grass which i do have respect i get respect for that let's get a company out
there but you cannot wear
the ball from her. Where does he live? At Augusta National? It's like the overtime goals
erasing from my memory from behind the net against St. Louis. It's like it's slowly
starting to go. He's behind the net in golf shoes for the rest of my life.
He's doing a spinner am on Cujo in golf shoes and then runs to the corner to meet Todd Gill
Yeah, I can't I can't do it man. I wish you didn't tell me that it's terrible
So I'm actually genuinely disappointed you would tell me that
Yagi cuts his lawn in golf shoes for traction
127 points is a leaf in golf shoes. Yeah cutting the lawn
The sad one. I'm sick over this. All
right, James Duffy coming up. I'll bet you Duffy does that though. Duffy screams
he lives in his golf shoes. He may wear golf gloves. When you get in, like just kind of
casually get into the Masters and say if you were going to a golf tournament,
would you wear golf shoes? He would say yes. I think he probably would. All right,
we'll put him on the spot. We'll be spontaneous and we'll get his tag in the Leaf game tonight
Demidoff last night the Masters scratched the Dougie stuff from the pod yeah get that out
We can't have people I can't have people so I don't want to know way man
We're guilty of allowing the world to know Doug Gilmore's golf shoes
Oh offside when he mows his lawn
overdrive where's golf shoes? So offside. When he mows his lawn. Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and on TSN 4. Overdrive continues powered by Fandual bringing you everything from the opening line to the final
score. Lots of support for Doug Gilmore online. Lots of support, man. We're getting like dozens
and dozens of people tweeting in saying, I stand with Dougie. Oh Duffy what he does. What was it? He wears golf shoes to cut his grass.
Do you support that? Well I mean what are we talking about here because golf shoes. It doesn't
matter man. Well you can't. Full spikes? Yeah the old like foot joy. Nails they call them.
If you wear nails in the bottom of your old classics. That's a little bit.
And if he's out there, you know how you can change the spikes now with the plastic ones?
You're out there doing that before the lawn thing. Let's face it, it's Dougie. He can
do anything. I guess, yeah, Gilmore can. It's a lot though. It's a little like the golf
glove guy at the, at the, at the master. That's what we're talking about. Okay. Do you see
the, I don't, I didn't see that much at the Masters, that type of behavior.
Did you see a range finder?
Did you see one guy with a range?
You must have saw some...
No, no, no.
It's some binoculars and stuff, but no, not that.
People are decked out generally at the Masters.
A lot of times...
Big show.
Yeah, it's a big show.
Not a show.
The Phoenix is more of a fashion show, waist management.
It's like a party.
In the Masters, but what a weekend.
I know you're probably sick of talking about it.
So incredible.
You probably did three hours yesterday.
So incredible.
The best ever.
And you know, people say, I did get a question when I said that because people say recency
bias.
But I also think there's the opposite, which is like history bias.
When you witness something, you say, well, this can't be the best ever because there's
been so much in history. But I think this will be, as talked
about as any in 30 years. And you know, Jack's win in 86 was amazing and historical because
he was 46 and back in 86 that was like a grandfather, it felt like winning the Masters. So that
was unexpected. And Tiger's win, first one in 97, was historical on so many levels and then when Tiger won again
I thought I'd never see anything like that
But if you take the whole week all four days were unbelievable
The leaderboard was jammed and if you take just the the roller coaster of that round
Like I always say I don't know if the right word is a gasp
But what do you say at home like holy blank or what those kind of moments if you
in a great sporting event you might get three or four of those moments that started on whole
there were legit ten I was so I'm out on one when he doubles I couldn't see him putting
so we laughed after his shot and try to catch up with Corey and then I see the sky sports
guys so I'm like what happened he's like he doubled and some guys were sort of listening
to me and they're like what happened I'm like he doubled and they're just reaction of oh my god
It's happening. So there's one
You know three and four great shots, but I won't call those like those moments seven through the trees. Yes. Holy crap 11
99 times out of a hundred that goes in the water
Okay, that shot even and Ludwig had just chipped out like a few minutes before he goes for it
That's two inches from the water. You're right. So there's three
13
Incredible like I think I fell to my knees. Yeah 15
One of the most insane shots in the history of golf 17 concerning what he had to do
18 putting it in the bunker the miss putt on 18
The playoff hole getting it that close and then so there's 10
Like unbelievable. Holy crap moments by one guy yeah in one sporting event with the
buildup of his history with ten years of a Shakespearean tragedy all playing out
so you can't tell me and even in those other ones when Tiger won in 19 it was
incredible but the tournament wasn't that great leading up and even in on
that day Tiger was hit in the middle of greens and stuff.
This was the greatest sports movie of all time.
And the saddest thing is, we will never see it again.
Because what in our careers can possibly match that?
A Canadian could win and it would be amazing.
But it won't be like that because the crowds won't be like that.
And maybe Spieth in 12 years, if he goes through a Rory-like stage wins one it might be neat,
but he won't win like that.
We won't see anything like this again in a lifetime probably.
I know one thing in sports that could top it Jimmy.
You talking a Leaf win?
I'm talking just golf.
I know.
But you're right though.
Like honestly this guy, because you mentioned Spieth, Spieth is never in contention.
No one shows up at any tournament and thinks he's going to win.
Rory McIlroy threw away the US Open nine months ago.
Like he just threw away the US Open nine months ago. The loss at St. Andrews.
And he threw away the one before that that won them Clark.
Absolutely. He was in that. And that's what was it was like it was almost like a
10 season HBO crave
Masterpiece that landed the finale. Yeah, you know like it was just it was almost like this unbelievable ride
Probably could have started at the British where he blew it to camp Smith. Absolutely. That's at st. Andrew
Yes, and blows it to can't even you're right
This would be the final tail if he'd won by six on Sunday. But to win in
that way, which is kind of the only way Rory could win it, is to fail.
That's what made it amazing.
Like I said earlier, he choked, unchoked, choked, unchoked, choked, unchoked. Five times
in the round.
Well, and I have found myself, like I was talking to my wife about it actually this
morning, she's like, man, you keep talking about all these failures he had. And I guess
I was programmed for that because I kept, like he won. And I keep talking about all these failures he had, and I guess I was programmed for that, because I kept, like he won,
and I keep talking about 13 and what he did on 18
and what he did on one,
and I saw someone tweet out this morning,
the percentages, like, because he hit shots
that are not human, like the shot he hit on 15,
the shot he hit on 17, the shot out of the trees,
but this guy, Lou Stagner, who's a Gold Stat Pro, tweeted out that the chances of him hitting the shots on 15,
16, and 17, I missed the putt on 16, but he hit one to 9 feet and it was up on
that top layer, like the pin, the Jack Nicklaus 75 pin. He said Rory hitting the
shots he hit into 15, 16, and 17 was a one in 28,000
chance of happening because of the percentages.
The shot on 15 was a 2% chance of happening.
The shot on 17 was.37% likely for him to hit it to like
a foot, foot and a half.
So that guy had a three hole run with three of the greatest
irons we've ever seen in our lives and yet he still almost threw it away on 18 with one of the worst wedges we've ever seen in our life
It's just an unbelievable story and we're two days removed. I still can't believe it
Sorry, this is sound like a horrible like humble brag, but when I got to play I was in the exact same spot
He was at on 13 because I laid up and not from the members to use which are like a hundred in front of where he was sitting. I laid up to almost that exact spot because I remember
thinking oh I'm hitting in the water. He hit it awful close to the hazard on his second
shot. Yeah I know very close. That like Hayes you wouldn't you would be on the green if
you just had to hit the green on that shot 98 times out of a hundred you. Right. Yeah.
And the best player in the world missed
his target by 30 yards anyway it was just and you know it's funny I would
tell the story when Tiger won in 19 he made a great two putt on 9 and Puffy our
producer and I were right there at that walkway between 9 and 10 and you know
you're not supposed to be a cheerleader when you're covering sports, let alone the Masters.
And Tiger walks by and Puffy just couldn't help himself.
He's like, you got this Tiger!
We have media credentials, you can't do this.
And then we're leaving after we do our stuff on Sunday night and we're walking out from
our studio, which is... the other surreal scene was when Rosie was on the range.
He's right behind us.
And it was the weirdest thing. So we're watching on the big screen and Rosie's just over our
shoulders and there's like 15 people in the grandstand I'm going what are you
people doing crazy Rory's coming up 18 to win one of the most historic Masters
ever yeah and in your you're on the grandstand in the rain committed to
Rose watching Rose staying hot anyway I'm leaving and the cart
starts to come towards us and I realize it's Rory and I just I got caught up in
it I'm like Rory that was amazing you're such an idiot I couldn't stop myself
he just gives me the little wave. That was incredible I nerded out the scene like the
wall the the him just everything like that was oceans pouring out him crying
him walking off the course yeah that little six minutes cbs from the uh... and event especially that
one
the one that just in cal like i think nansen in moment someone did the math
they said like forty three words in seven minutes
like it just they allowed it to breathe it was just this part here like this one
that you see him going through
the entire decade
right here again in his face. Ten years of emotion.
He's going through every single miss and what he's just done and it's, I think that's going
to be one of the more iconic, you know, one minute shots in sport that we ever see.
Absolutely.
Top to top though.
James Duthie with me, or with us in studio.
Okay, since we're on the theme of like the impossible happening or the unbelievable finally becoming believable
Let me ask you guys a question a couple weeks ago. We did the hot tub
Take machine the hot we went back in time
if I had have told you in September, which one of these options would you have said are
Just impossible to believe or more impossible to believe I had have told you in September
Just impossible to believe or more impossible to believe I had have told you in September
Miko ranton and will be playing against the avalanche in the first round or Gabe
Landisgog will be playing for the avalanche in the first round which one would you choose that would
Which one would you say there's no way I don't believe that Niko random more so than landisgog
Yeah, that came out of the blue where it was like if they were going to make
like just at the beginning of the season if you said i think the avalanche
agreement try to make another run for it
with out me go ran and i was about
i don't have time for this yeah i really do not i just didn't think let landisgard
has been playing three years
but i find it was not there was talk for the last year that he re years he's been
trying final i mean i worked out I'm trying to come back. There was talk for the last year that he... Three years he's been trying. I know.
I mean, I...
Worked out.
It did, and I credit him.
It's the most incredible story.
Usually the guy just ends up going back to Sweden,
you never hear from him again.
That's what I'm saying.
I never for a second thought he'd ever play again.
Like not for a second, for at least a year and a half,
I've been like, it's over.
Remember we had the press conference last year
and it felt almost forced,
like I'm gonna try to keep playing and the like.
Has a prominent player been out that long? I mean we've had you know different
circumstances with Sakukovu and Mario and their diseases in their careers you
know Forsberg missed like almost a year I think at some point but the three years
and then come back and play a prominent role would be fascinating. Based on
injury I can't think of one. And on your question like the ranting thing add
another layer to it
That need be playing AIDS Colorado after being traded to another test. You're right. That's probably that's impossible
That probably is the answer. Where was he on the TSN top 50?
I'd imagine he was in the top 15 coming into the see coming into the frankie. Yeah, for sure top 20 for sure
Yeah, and Colorado is going for a cups gonna trade that guy it is worked out and i'm not an unbelievable but i think it's just an
incredible turn of events at landis gox been called up
like it sounds like he's gonna play
yeah like the guys gonna play for the avalanche again after three years which
is remarkable and he's going to be up against randin and last time we saw them
they were on the
holding a stanley cop
it's incredible landis gog back when we were NHL on TSN, came into our studio for an interview in his
rookie season.
And I think I'd never spoken to him before.
Maybe it was his draft season.
And you know, Swedish, like he did not have the hint of a Swedish accent.
Guys like Matts and Alfredson played 20 years in the league and you can still hear Swedish. Gabriel Landestog at 18 years old did not
have one tinge. He sounded like the most Canadian guy you could have. And it threw me because I guess I'd never spoken to him before
and he was 18 or something at the time. And yeah, just a bizarro.
He sounds like he grew up in like Don Mills. Exactly. Like this guy, he's a Swedish player.
So where are you at with Demidov?
Where are we going?
Take, take.
I love the hype.
Put this in a perspective, the Demidov story.
I know that face and I know it means everybody needs to calm down.
No, I don't think so.
I wouldn't, especially if you're in Montreal and you haven't had that guy.
I don't know if it was you that were, oh, you were talking about on Jay Show last night,
how long it's been since, how long they've been striving for a Le Fleur type character and it's an awful lot to make
that comparison after one game. But it's pretty rare that you get hyped like that and even
in the, you know, the rookie warm-up skate and to have an ovation like that, I don't remember one like that,
and then to perform like that in the first period
is pretty rare.
And so I think this is worthy of the hype
and all the hyperbole, that pass,
that move to lead to that pass,
and then the move on the goal.
And suddenly, don't you think this whole season has so changed the outlook of the Habs from I think the
outsiders perspective Habs fans have probably been watching these guys
coming but you know us on the outside covering the Leafs more in Toronto I
think that you go okay you know this is a decent team but they don't really have
any you know Suzuki's really good and Caulfield's really good and they're developing but they're lacking and
suddenly you you add Hudson and this guy and some of the guys that were saying
that Habs are I think was MJ or Craig I think was MJ who said the Habs gonna be
the next Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup it it's certainly not a
preposterous statement at this point in time sorry Hazy V. It's putting the card
pretty far ahead of the horse right now.
I'm just saying, pure talent.
If Toronto and Winnipeg stumble Edmonton over the next, let's say, two years, then suddenly
they could emerge very quickly on the scene as the best Canadian team.
Their window is not even open yet.
And where the Leafs it's closing
Edmonton's close Edmonton's in big trouble like they're in big big trouble
and I agree I feel like they're not the favorite against LA I don't think they
should be I'm curious about Fandu I thought I looked earlier and I think
the Oilers are still the betting favorite but that's in Canada the whole
thing about beating a team like even two years in a row to beat them four years in
a row and and to have so many injuries and that's bad that's a candle holding a beating a team like even two years in road to beat them four years in a row and and to have so many injuries and
and i don't know that i call that's a like that back i a held the fall down
there in that bush are go out there and we'll around and
he was everything for their blue line more than ever
dry saddle and make david are going to have to will
a series when there is more than they've done it before they can do it ever
they're gonna have to do it.
They can do it.
Yeah, they're minus 128 on Fandl.
Kings are plus 106.
It's close to a Pick'em.
I guess is, but last night it locked it in.
Like Kings have home ice.
I don't know.
But yeah, listen, I hear you.
And another thing the Habs have going for them
is they don't really have anchors in terms of contracts.
If anything, they're out in front of Suzuki and Caulfield.
We'll see, Slevkovsky still, I think, got to reach another level, but they got good
kids in the system and maybe this allows them to sign a player or two-and-free agency and
they take that next step. Because I'll tell you what, like the Sid to Montreal thing is
going to get crazy.
Oh, if that team gets, if that team gets going next couple of years.
That's the one. Sid to Montreal to wrap up his career and put them over the top.
Thanks for the Twitter abuse I'm about to take.
Okay let's show Dougie Gilmore shoes. Do you want to take us through this? This is exciting.
Look at that. Okay so they're not this are they the spikes? Those are the two or three
sixties I think. Those are the old school Dita shoes.
The kid Dougie just puttin' in a clinic.
Those things have put in a lot of lawnmower.
I did see a lot of golf shoes at Augusta.
He's doin' it every Monday.
Yeah.
There was a lot of golf shoes at Augusta National, but not a lot of, like, spikes.
More like, you know, there's a real fine line between golf shoe and running shoe.
But you saw people wearing golf shoes.
100%, yes.
Okay.
I mean, there are stylish golf shoes. I mean, I was. 100% yes. Okay. I mean there are stylish golf shoes. I mean I was in a
sense the Puma stuff they give us are running shoes that you could wear as golf shoes. You know what I had...
How about something, how about some of the stupid hats people were buying? If you can't, I always bug you to get me...
If you came back with a hat that said pimento cheese on... like they were selling... Egg salad? Egg salad hats!
They were selling eggs... like if you came back with that
I'd rip it up and burn it in the garbage right in front of you. I did get you a little something something
I didn't bring it tonight, but it is it's not like that. It's nothing nothing anybody would ever see but I'll present it to you
Thursday and if you think it's goofy you can talk about it on the program. Okay, I won't accept it
I don't know you have to accept it. It's. Okay. I won't accept it. I don't... You have to accept it. I think you'll like it.
It's a gift.
I think you'll like it.
You've got to accept it, man.
We're all too old to be accepting crap.
You have to accept it.
You just have to say to the person, sorry, I'm not interested.
I just think I want to acknowledge the fact that a real step forward in our relationship,
that for the first time in my, I think, thirteen Masters, you didn't either tell me on Sunday
morning that you wanted something or not say anything and then get mad at me
when I came back and didn't have anything for you because you assumed that I would get
you something.
Okay.
Well done.
It's a big step forward.
That was a big step forward.
We're all grown up.
There we go.
Look at us, all growns up.
Yep.
All right, JD.
Good seeing you, man.
Yeah.
The vision title tonight.
Title fight.
It's the Battle of Ontario.
Could be locked in tonight on TSN4.
The big one. Guys,. From the Masters to Buffalo.
That's how you show your scratch of broadcast.
Exactly.
That's range.
That's range.
That's why he's up for the Canadian Screen Awards.
Oh stop.
You never know, you might take him down this year.
I'm going to try.
Even I'm on Team Haze.
Thank you.
Thank you. Did you vote? Well no, I wouldn't vote for you but I symbolically I'm on your side. I appreciate the support.
I don't have a good voice. No I hear you. Me neither. All right there's James Duthey. We'll catch him on the panel tonight.
Overdrive continues. TSN 1050N on TSN 4. All right Mike Johnson coming up. Confirmed with
Deny as well. Head of Leaf Sabers tonight. We got a bunch of games in the n.h.l. j's back in
action tonight
looking to bounce back
nine and eight
yankees won last night yankees leaped over them it's early you can't be right
so i cannot stand it
at you did have a little may not the last night but
you did have a little mini blow up it was like yesterday you're like this is a
great deal congrats ross today you're like this is a great deal congrats Ross today you were like why he needs to wake up listen it's a 14 year contract we can't analyze the
contract every single time he does something positively or negatively I
said I didn't warn you about it I was a third choice for a guy you wanted to
hand money out to oh Johnny was one Soto was two and you just settle for three
and you just did it to do it well there there is truth in that lineage in terms of what they were trying
to do but like he's got a slash line right now 284 on base 347 he's slugging
343 like that's that's an OPS under 700 he hasn't had a home run looking at the
jumbotron last night miles straw and Tyler Heineman led the lineup in OPS. Yeah, Heineman and Straw have home runs.
Those are bench players.
Heineman has not hit a home run since 2019.
He's got more home runs than Bo and Plotty.
Hour two coming up, positive thoughts continue.
TSN 1050 and on TSN 4.
You've been listening to Overdrive, powered by FanDuel.
