Starting point is 00:00:00 This hour of overdrive is powered by Fanduil. Fandul, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score. All right, here we go, overdrive, off and running. TSN 1050 on the TSN app, your home smart speaker, up on TSN4, up on YouTube live. Brian Hasey, O'Dog, Jeff O'Neill, Jamie Noodles-McKlinning. What's going on today? What's going on? How are we feeling this afternoon?
Starting point is 00:00:25 Boys, we have a serious psychological problem with one of the fearless leaders. of our TSN group. Oh, yeah? What do we got? James Duthy. Oh, no. He, in his golf game, he's got problems. I heard a story from an executive yesterday, and this is what happened.
Starting point is 00:00:47 He was telling me about his problems on the driving range. Okay. And he said, I might have to use Jimmy's golf coach from Germany. Oh, it's going to Germany to get lessons now. Via Skype, and this is how it went. I'm not kidding. He skypes with a guy from Germany, and this is how he got this guy. He goes to the Masters every year, as we all know, and he sees that stinky little Bernie
Starting point is 00:01:21 Longer at the chipping area, and his catty or his coach or whatever standing there, and Jimmy goes up and he had access, and he just was chatting with the, the coach or whatever. And the coach was, yeah, I do, like I teach whoever, yeah. And Jimmy goes, would you help me? Like, how could we work that out? He goes, give me your info, and I can Skype. So Jimmy now works with Bernie Longer's coach.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Via Skype. That's how messed up the sky is. Well, I mean, listen, Bernie, he's got two green jackets, right? Dude, I know. I know. But you know that Duffy has psychological problems. I watch Duffy. I know.
Starting point is 00:01:58 I've seen him play. I know what it's all. about. No, I know, but you don't know, like, analyzing it and stuff. I sat behind him, and I was very worried. We were watching a hockey game because we were doing a hit on it after. And he had a video of his swing, and he went reverse, reverse, a thousand times. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:19 A thousand. Well, you've got to make sure if you're working on something, right, if it's a wrist hinge, if it's a weight transfer. Dude, the guy's 58 years old. There are some people, I know you can practice and work. work on things. But what you bring to the dance at this particular point, you're pretty much bringing it to the day.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Duffy's not going to improve anymore. I was envisioning like Tin Cup. He had like the helmet on with the swinging thing in front. That's him. He's done that before. I'm pretty sure almost every gadget available, Duffy has tried. I've never heard of anyone going across the ocean looking for help. Skyping.
Starting point is 00:02:58 But he weasels up to burn. Bernie Longer's coach at Augusta and says, what about me? I guess you got it. You're not going up to Scotty Sheffler's coach, right? You're not going to go up to McElroy's coach. You can't go up to Brad Faxson and say, can you help me out? Dude, that's why he did it. He took advantage of it because he knew Scotty's coach would say call security.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Yeah, get out of you. You're losing your badge. Coaching, I understand, and I respect that. But, like, the coach might look at him and go, I can't help you. Like, you know, it might just be, it might be a cash. grab. Well, Jamie, have you ever had a... Austin Matthews shooting coach?
Starting point is 00:03:35 Oh, he's going to make you... If Hayes, you walked in and went to Chesswood and said, yeah, I've got Austin Matthew shooting coach on Skype here. He's going to take one look at your wrist shot and go, I can't help you. Obviously, but if I'm paying him $500 an hour, he'll say I'll give it a shot. Exactly. And that's what this guy's rinsing James Duck. That's exactly what's going on right now.
Starting point is 00:03:55 That's right. I would love to know. I'd be curious of the cost. You've got to find out. what he's paying that. A thousand bucks an hour. Guys, please, can you humor me? Can you humor me?
Starting point is 00:04:05 Right. Before the first break, all we need is three or four minutes. We got a cold call Duffy and find out what he's paying the guy from Jeremy. He's not going to admit that. He will. He's not doing it for free. Why would the guy do anything for anyone for free?
Starting point is 00:04:17 You think a guy is Skyping Duffy at 4 o'clock in the morning Germany time to watch Duffy in his grubby underpants in his basement swinging a club? Yeah, no chance. He might have hazard pay to see that, too. It's probably 250 euros an hour. That would be my guess. I would think so.
Starting point is 00:04:36 250 euros. That's 400 bucks. If I know Duffy, he's abusing the kind of client coach relationship and boundaries, sending the guy messages at two in the morning. How about this one? Just part 10. Right, exactly. Updates.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Live updates. I was like, oh, great. Good job. I'm all on. Damn, and I made a three pot on 11. Might need some extra training here. I just three putt at 11. But, like, you know, that is, listen, if you can do it, have at it.
Starting point is 00:05:06 I see coaches every day. People that put in hard work at minor hockey and all of that, like, I love them. These people have to deal with crazy parents and crazy people and all of that. Like, they should get hazard pay for all that. But it is a quid pro quo. Like, there is some, like, if you put elite on something, that means I can charge you $1,500 for the company. Dude, I'm going to start in the fall. I'm going to start teaching.
Starting point is 00:05:32 The elite training camp is $500 a day. Your bedside manner would not be very good. Oh, you're not coaching kids or something, dude. Shut up. I'm being dead. You want to ruin an entrepreneurship? Yeah, I am. I'm ruining it right now.
Starting point is 00:05:49 We go bankrupt. You're going to go bankrupt before it even starts. I'm just saying you, like you will literally say to somebody, just pick up your ball and leave. I'm sorry, I can't help you. Here's what I'm going to do. And I want to start this because I think I know what I'm talking about, and I know it better than a lot of people because I did it at a higher level.
Starting point is 00:06:07 I just want to help some high-level kids shooting the puck and quick release. That you could do. I like that idea. What did you think I was talking about golfing? I thought you were talking about golfing. No. He's not qualified to help. Al's brother goes out on the course, and you start criticizing him and going,
Starting point is 00:06:25 your swing is a mess. No. I would give the Brett Farrv advice. There's a famous quote from Brett Farre. He watched one of his teammates golfing on the range, and the teammate asked for advice. And Brett Favreve said, take two weeks off and then quit. It's great advice. It's great advice. Take two weeks off and then quit.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Oh, shooting coach, oh, I'm all for it. Honestly, Jamie, that's something that interests me because I see guys that, you know, played and not to discredit what they're critical. credentials are but i think i can i think i think i it's something that i'm passionate about shooting and how to do it and timing and all that stuff and i think i can help and i'm looking into ways that i'm going to start doing it let me ask your question and i'm being serious because you're being serious i am being serious you're being serious so i'm going to be dead serious okay go ahead are you going to we've analytics into the shooting camp where you should be on the ice right the best place to get open the the best
Starting point is 00:07:25 you know, scoring opportunities. These are part of the numbers, right? Like, we grew up with basically five holes you can shoot at, right? Your only, your glove, hand, low glove, low stick, blocker, five holes. I do not need analytics for any of that type of notes. I don't know if you could be an elite camp. Here's the only thing I do because I'm a visual person. I would watch, there's a thing called, what is it, something barn where you can watch.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Lie barn. LiveBarn. If a kid wants help, I can go watch a game on LiveBarn or be at it in person and see the different areas that he likes to shoot from or that's where he likes to get the puck or do whatever. And you can also get the NHL comparable of a guy that runs those patterns, gets in those positions, how he shoots the puck. And that's what you do you do. What do you think I'm going to do? What do you think I'm going to do, accumulate numbers? Well, I mean, here's, the scary thing is this is music to the ears of a lot of parents,
Starting point is 00:08:26 because, like, you're a 40-go-old score with a great shot, but you know shooting, as much as I know shooting. You have to be naturally talented at that. You have to have forearms of steel. You need to have strength. Dude, you're wrong. You're dead wrong, and I'm going to tell you why. When I got to the NHL, Brian, my shot was an absolute muffin, and my release was a joke. And guess who pulled me aside and said, if you want to,
Starting point is 00:08:51 to score goals in the big leagues, this is how you got to do it. Guess who did that? Ron Francis. No. Brendan Chanahan. Bang on. He said you have to get the puck and it's Joe from the bridge. Get some clips of my quick release and I'm going to show.
Starting point is 00:09:05 I'm going to do an advertisement for my business. I love it. Sign up for shooting lessons with Coach O'Dong. Elite shooting. Don't kid yourself. You're going to be coming out on the ice one or the odd time too. I don't think so. You're going to come out on the ice.
Starting point is 00:09:18 What I'm saying, I don't like to go out on the ice. anymore. I watch as a parent now. I like to support the people that are helping. If I need to, I'll come out. But my point being is, I'm just going to say this. Jason Strudwick has a decamp. And apparently it's wildly, wildly popular at Edmonton. So that guy has a CEMP, and he brings kids out into the front of the net and cross-checks them in the back and gets paid for it. Stradi does skill development. What I'm saying, though, I think you can do this. And I'll tell you why, O, and I think you'd be great. So you guys know that there's a goaltender seminar every summer. The goalie guild puts it on, a guy named Justin Goldman.
Starting point is 00:09:58 So I would go a couple years, and they started bringing in shooting coaches and basically picking their brains because what's happened is the goalies try to get ahead of the shooters. Now the shooters are getting ahead of the goaltenders. Every guy's got a shooting coach, a skills coach, all of that type of stuff. So as much as the goleys are looking at the shooters, the shooters are now looking at goalies. and they brought in a guy from Vancouver named Ron Johnson, and he was Joe Pavelsky's coach, and Pavelsky's one of the best tippers.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Really, I think it won the history of the game. Like a guy, unbelievable stick. And he started talking about quadrants. Where shooters like to go now? You've got a pass in the slot. You're not thinking, okay, what is he giving me? I've got to hit a quadrant. I've got to hit the upper top left.
Starting point is 00:10:46 Unfortunately, Jamie, you lost me right there, because I think when a guy, the timing is so quick, when you're getting a one-time pass in the slot, the last thing you are thinking about is I've got to put this in a quadrant. Your main goal is, I want to shoot this high, I want to shoot it hard, and I've got to get it off quickly. That's what he was talking about. It's exactly where the quadrant.
Starting point is 00:11:07 So he's saying when you look at the analytics of it, 88% of goals are below, 88% of shots in the National Hockey League are glove and lower on the ice. So what they're trying to do is hit the 12% And you're trying to go on the quadrants That are beside the ears above the gloves All of that type of stuff It was amazing to listen to them talk and present So you're on to something, though
Starting point is 00:11:30 But you know, you naturally had a great shot You've got to incorporate that on your instincts Of where to get to the ice Where to quietly get to ice How you separate yourself away from the puck All that stuff you can teach a kid Like I can't I can talk about from a goaltender standpoint
Starting point is 00:11:47 what I see nowadays, but goaltending has evolved. So you're going to have to be up to speed on what these guys are doing now, not to what you did, because the game has changed too. This or data? Yes, dis or data. And to balance it out, you got strutty in his camp out in Edmonton, who are trying to stop the gaps from being open. Yes, and closing down space.
Starting point is 00:12:09 You know, and our buddy Chris Pronger, you know, he's a former D. Although he's in the media, he says. He says he's in the media now. Okay. Telling A.K. and Carlo this morning when they're grilling him. Yeah. Say, no, I'm in the media with Carlo and noodles and old dogs. Well, and then, you know, everything can be thrown out completely when you see kind of the stuff going on in the playoffs last night, like geeky scores from the red line.
Starting point is 00:12:34 That was. So where did UPL go to school? That was. What goalie school did he learn that point? My heart hurt for him because that was one of those change direction, the Toskola, leaning into it, but then it jumps up. to the side. Only in the playoffs. Allow the goal, though. Allow the goal, but don't follow it up with a poor performance.
Starting point is 00:12:53 And he did because he got scored on two quick ones after that, and that was curtains for Buffalo. I will say this, we haven't given enough credit to Boston. If you've watched both of those games, I think Boston's been the better team. Yeah. Over the life of the two games. Buffalo stormed back in that last five minutes, seven minute, whatever it was. But if you look at Boston, the fact that they got it.
Starting point is 00:13:16 the lead. They were playing strong. Boston has been there, done that. Buffalo's still learning. I'm not saying Buffalo's going to lose. I just think that that's a tough lesson to learn last night because Boston really took it to him. Yeah, I mean, UPL, again, it gets pulled. And all year it's been a tandem there.
Starting point is 00:13:33 You know, like, I understand why they went with UPL. I would assume he goes back in for game three. But Lyons been a big part of their success all year. And when you open the door to which goal he could play, you know, then it becomes storyline and yeah yeah outside of eight minutes buffalo has kind of been chasing that series and
Starting point is 00:13:52 now they head back to boston and you know there won't be a sweep there there's obviously not going to be a sweep in the montreal tampa series i think both of those kind of series that we see in terms of the atlantic division they're both going to go deep yeah Utah Vegas seven Utah Vegas and Utah had a great response last night they did was they played well man like they desperately needed that man and i'll tell you your l-a-kine Kings were very close. They played a really good game. They did.
Starting point is 00:14:21 But the sweep is alive still there. Hasey, don't forget, Hasey. Oh, today's Wednesday, right? Yeah. Tomorrow, you've got to update the bar play Stanley Cup playoffs. 100%. I've already, I'm taking notes on a daily basis. And I'm very intrigued on where this could go between now and tomorrow night.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Because we've got more games tonight, Evanton back in action. And tomorrow will be team up game three of Tampa and Montreal. And that was a great game again last night. It was a great game. It was a feisty game. There were fights. There was 25 guys in the box at the same time.
Starting point is 00:14:56 It was back into overtime. It was just an awesome game. Like through two games, that sets up to be, in my opinion, a seven-game barn burner. And that's exactly what you would expect with two really good teams. And I was glad, like, Slavkowski fought. Hagel's a scrappy guy, man. That guy's an animal. Hagle is like you think about it how many people
Starting point is 00:15:17 criticize and I'm sure we did too what Tampa gave up for Brandon Hagel Do you want to know why people were doing that Jamie including myself is because he was like this relatively unknown like he was a relative He was this guy He was an unknown and it's all of a sudden two first for that guy
Starting point is 00:15:37 Wow and to think and they signed him to a long term deal And people are like you had to trade for him and now you're justifying the trade. This guy is, he's a gamer, man. And I will say he's gotten better in Tampa. It doesn't hurt to work with Kuturoff in the offseason and play with him and that. But this guy has jam, and good for Slavkosky, too.
Starting point is 00:15:57 I love it. I love that he took that fight on. Exactly. Drop the gloves. Yeah, Hegel got him with one. So what? He got right back up and tried to fight. Hegel was like, nope, I'm done now, now that I've knocked you down.
Starting point is 00:16:08 Like, I just, at the end of the day, I worry that, Tampa was going out of their way to try and be bullies, and Montreal has stood up to it, good for them. But that Josh Anderson, man, he's an animal. He's in their kitchen right now. He might be on the bar play list tomorrow. He's incredibly high on that bar playlist, as he should be.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I mean, he's the only guy on the habs who have scored an even-strike goal. He's got two of them, and he had one call back. He's throwing hits. He's been in the middle. Like, he was throwing monster hits through two games in Tampa, and that will continue. And he's not fighting Sabarin. You look at Danny Sabrin, so are you nuts?
Starting point is 00:16:44 You think I'm fighting. You want to talk about the ultimate. Scott Sabron, not Dan. You want to talk about the ultimate underpants cam. Him. I wanted it on him when the ref originally said five minutes. He was in the penalty box, and his eyes went cross-side, and I thought, oh, my God, that guy must be crapping his pants if he ends this game right now.
Starting point is 00:17:07 I'm sorry. Like, they put him in, and I will say this. he can skate like for a guy who's tough he's a good skater he's got good hands and all of that but that's on coop he's out there with two minutes left in the game and a two-two tie and takes that penalty man oh man like they're lucky they sidestepped that because you're right that was close to a five i don't know if it raised to the level maybe if that was a tuesday in november it's probably a five but him the underpants cam and the fact that they made it through that because if Montreal scores in the power play there,
Starting point is 00:17:41 we are today talking about why is he on the ice with two minutes left in the game? All the tough guys I ever played with, Jamie, they knew that they couldn't take a stupid penalty because it would just be so costly as far as the ice time. And I don't mind him being in the lineup, Hayes, but usually at that point, this guy is done for the night. You know what I mean? Like they've shortened the bench and all that.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Now, it may speak to how much momentum and he was trying to fight guys, and they were aware when he was on the ice. I will say that. but that's a bad penalty to take and they were lucky. And I feel bad for Kirby Doc today. I don't think it was a five. Like I'm fine with it being two.
Starting point is 00:18:18 It's the playoffs. I didn't like that Anderson got a two-minute charging the game before. I think that was two minutes or too many. So I'm okay with it being two and they killed it. Now they'll play it off like, well, Sabarin was great. And Pat Maroon was tweeting about that last night. Pat will join us in about 10 minutes, 15 minutes on that. But yeah, I like Slavkovsky going with,
Starting point is 00:18:39 And it's not about winning or losing. It's about taking the fight, man. Yeah. You know, what gets remembered is who shows up and, more importantly, who doesn't, right? And we know a lot of players in hockey history who have said, no, thanks. I'm not taking that fight on. But the other thing is, Brian, like there's a bunch of guys on the Montreal Canadiens and all the teams throughout the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:19:01 Not only will they take it on or say, okay, like this is the playoffs, they're actually initiating it. like Brandon Hagel is wandering all over the ice and Corey Perry and like all of them and they're just like who like who wants to just get involved because it's competition. Yeah. We've talked about the Leafs for years. It's like they're out there and they're like we're just trying to kind of win the game here if we can. And it's just like it comes out so much. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:30 And furthermore, Florida's not around. So there's a bully like Tampa got bullied by Florida. Like Florida literally punted them multiple times and said, go stand in the corner. Like you can't run with us. They beat them on the scoreboard. They beat them in the alley. And Hago was right in front and center on that. Like Hago was throwing hits and fights and all that kind of stuff.
Starting point is 00:19:51 Tampa was trying to get up for the fight, but they couldn't. Now Florida's not there. And if you're Tampa, I think they're looking at this saying, we'll take that title. We'll take that label as the team no one wants to play against or the team is going to challenge your wherewithal. and what separates Hagle from other players like a Sabarin, even like an Anderson, who I love. Anderson's playing on the fourth line is Hagle's a star. Like, Hagle is a star player.
Starting point is 00:20:15 He's been arguably the best player in the series through two games. He kills penalties. He's on the power play. He's on the top. He's going to play 20 minutes a night. So if Slavkovsky doesn't take that fight, he's just going to keep going and going and going. It's like not to the same level as Marshan and Sard.
Starting point is 00:20:33 and Sadeen back in the day, but it's not far off. Like, he was basically staring at Slavkovsky saying, what are you going to do about it? And I think it was really important that Slavkovsky said, this is what I'm going to do about it. Let's go. You got to. I understand, Kofield's not going to fight,
Starting point is 00:20:49 and Suzuki's not going to fight, and Hudson's not going to fight. Neither's Kutjurov, right? Neither is Sorrelli's probably not going to fight. Point's not going to fight. So there's guys that square off in other areas. But if you're a 6-foot-4-220, and you're looking down on a guy who's challenging you. You've got to take that on it's Lovkovsky did last night.
Starting point is 00:21:08 Good for him. Yeah, good for him. And you got to be careful because Hago can fight. Like that's a Saskatchewan kid that can throw. He's a scrappy kid, man. Yeah, he can throw. Good on him. Pat Maroon coming up in 10.
Starting point is 00:21:19 We've got Frankie Carrado on today. Jerry's percentages. The Jays are in action. We'll track what's going on there. The Rappers back in action tomorrow night. LeBron, unbelievable. Again, last night. It's incredible what he's doing at 41 years old.
Starting point is 00:21:33 There's a lot to get into in terms of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and we're still waiting on what's going to happen with the Leafs and whether or not they're going to hire a GM, a president, a president of hockey ops, is that going to happen this week, next week, or further down the line. Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and on TSN4.
Starting point is 00:21:49 Hello, Canada. This is Brian Adams Radio. Hosted by Brian Adams himself. We'll play a few of mine, a ton of my favorites, and some must-hear behind-the-scenes stories from the world of rock and roll. How many get you? One thing about doing rock and roll so long is you end up meeting a lot of the people that you admire. Sometimes you even get to work with him.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Brian Adams Radio. Now available on the free I-Hard Radio app. Hey, everybody. How are you tonight? Sounds great. All right, Overdrive continues, powered by Van Duel, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score. Pat Maroon here in a few moments. Frankie Corrado will join us. Got the under 18 starting up.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Right? We get the World Championships. around the corner. You've got CHO playoffs still going, Memorial Cup around the corner, the draft lottery coming up in a couple of weeks. That's a big night for Canadian content with Vancouver and Calgary and Toronto and Winnipeg all in the hunt. Something's going to go, something crazy is going to happen that night. Do you think one Canadian team's going to get it? Yeah, I'm going to put some money on that. I'll put some money on that. That's the biggest gripe I'm getting now from Leaves Nation. And, like, just after they lost the three games after the Olympic break, like, shut the mill and secure a top fiver.
Starting point is 00:23:11 You know what I mean? Right. Tank with, like, significance, shut down Nielander, shut down your goalies. Yes. And lose. Yeah. They still lost a ton. Oh, they did.
Starting point is 00:23:23 It was not like they were winning. They lost the ton organically. Yes. But there was some unnecessary victories, man, where it was like, really? Yeah, I know. Had to go into Anaheim and pick up a win. I had to get that extra point in L.A. I would have told every good player on the team in Anaheim, I would have said,
Starting point is 00:23:40 boys, go surf and have fun tonight. You're not playing. Right. You're not playing. Well. Either way, there's going to be sparks, right, with the leaves. Either they keep their pick, they move up, they lose their pick, and it's going to drive conversation into the office season.
Starting point is 00:23:57 What's the best, like, honestly, in your opinion, what's the best case scenario for them? just pick fifth they keep their pick and move on with life No win the lottery if you're going to keep your pick win the lottery Okay so okay sorry so win the lottery but I'm saying keep your pick So win the lottery get first or keep your pick and your fifth Or what you drop somebody else wins the lottery and you drop to what sixth And you hand that to Boston Yeah I think it's to just win the lottery now
Starting point is 00:24:24 I know there's a lot of concern Among a portion of the fan base Of the fact that they don't have control over their next two picks, right? Boston and Philly are going to get their next two picks and they could be going south. This stretch run could be a sign of what is about to come. And maybe you hand Boston the first overall pick instead of a sixth or seventh overall pick. And that's possible. But if I'm the Leafs, you take whatever you can get and guarantee. In other words, if you get a first overall pick, it's not going to be better than that next year.
Starting point is 00:24:56 You know, a first overall pick is a first overall pick. If you like McKenna, if that's who the player is, whoever you think it might be, you get them in your system and you start moving, right? Like I think, I can reason with that, especially if it's a given that they're going to try and be competitive next year. I'll believe it when I see it. I'm not convinced how they're going to be able to do that, but I'd rather, if I'm the Leafs, get a good pick now,
Starting point is 00:25:21 know you've got it, and roll the dice on what's going to happen the next two years. And those picks are gone. Like, ultimately, the damage is done. trades are over you can't call philly back and ask for your pickback that's the bizarre thing about all this like if they have to if there's changes and everybody knows what kind of changes i'm talking about and like you're going to try to reboot this thing without those picks like what a daunting task yeah well i mean like absolutely but that's where if you if certain players powerful players
Starting point is 00:25:55 decide this isn't for me anymore and you make big trades You're going to recoup that. That's the question. I mean, if you're a proponent of this team just can't do it, and the best players have proven for a decade, they're not capable of dragging them to the promised land. I think, again, there's a large portion of the fan base that is a believer in that. Then I can argue win the lottery now, trade Matthews, trade Nylander,
Starting point is 00:26:22 and that's how you restart the rebuild. Like, yes, you don't have those two picks. It's the only way. If you let these guys both kind of filter, out of the organization and get nothing for them would be assidine. Exactly. Exactly. You either need a commitment long term or you're trading them like this summer.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Yeah. That seems like the only option. That's the fork in the road. I agree. If they depart the organization, you need to get the king's ransom for them. And that's right now. That's not in a year and a half. Is that possible, though, Jamie, if Austin Matthews says, check, please, out of here.
Starting point is 00:26:57 and there's not really much leverage when you do, you know. I disagree on that, and here's why. Quinn Hughes, we don't know what the narrative was, but Quinn Hughes is known as a top-tier defenseman. Well, the narrative was he told Jimmy Rutherford that he's not resigning, so he said, okay, I got to trade you. So to Brian's point, and again, I don't want to start anything here. If he decides that he doesn't want to stomach whatever is being put in front of him,
Starting point is 00:27:25 or he decides he wants to move up. on. Then he puts that in front of the new manager, and they work together to find a new home. And they will get a lot for Austin Matthews. They get a lot for William Nealander. Again, if he wants to move on, or they say, you've got to move on. That's the biggest challenge, because they might want to stay, and the new person might say, actually, I think it's best for this and this and this. And Keith Pelly, an organization has to sign off it. That's why I think it's a critical, critical summer here for the leaves. 100%. The next, who they have.
Starting point is 00:27:57 hire what happens with that lottery and what happens with their best players. We're all going to be determined in the next month, six weeks. This is pivotal what's about to happen. Stanley Cup playoffs continuing tonight. Edmonton back in action, Ottawa back in action tomorrow. Havs lightning coming up as well. That series tied and a guy who's familiar with what's going on. Down in Tampa was a former lightning player, Cup winner, back on overdrive.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Here's Pat Maroon. How you doing, Pat? Doing better now that I got to beat O'Dog's ass in Tampa and golf. Look at this rat snake. What a rat snake. You know what, Hayes? We didn't hear that. We didn't hear that, Pat.
Starting point is 00:28:38 We didn't hear that story. All on here. Details. No, Hayes. Haysy, you got some. Him and his buddy Brando. Hayes, this guy's got something in common with you because you guys both, you get all these shots in a golf match.
Starting point is 00:28:52 and it's amazing how the holes you get the shots on, you turn into Ernie L's in your prime. It's amazing how that happens. Athletes. You're both rat snakes. This guy, the most important hole in a day, he makes this putt and he's like, yeah, I got a shot. Four for three, Patty Maroon.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Four for three. No, I ended on 17. It wasn't even a stroke hole for me. I just said, I'll just stick it from the bunker, and there you go, Bertie. So it's all right, though. I love it. These two can't handle the heat either, man.
Starting point is 00:29:26 I know Brando, he would go into a shell on the back nine of the back match. I know exactly how that played out. They played great. I had a great partner named Clint, and he is a stick. And let's just say I was, his back was a little heavy, but I made the shots that were important, and we were ham and egg and that's all that matter. I love it.
Starting point is 00:29:48 That's all you need to do, man. It's not how. It's how many. You win more than them. You're going home. the cash. So we were discussing the Sabarin Anderson hit at the end of the game there. I saw your tweet, and he was to say it led to a lot of reaction online.
Starting point is 00:30:04 I think you're aware of that. Anderson has been running rough shot all over this series through two games. And he's a wanted man. Savoran challenged him earlier in the game. He wouldn't take it. You're okay with Sabrin getting him, or at least you thought, or I think you believed Tampa would kill that penalty because it was on Anderson. Take us through the kind of thought process of the team dynamic and Sabrin, Anderson, etc.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Well, I think one, I think people kind of miss, kind of, when they read that treat, they're thinking like, oh, Anderson. But I think Anderson's been one of the best players from both teams. One, just watching the series, he's kind of changed the momentum for the Montreal Canadians. And what him and Jack I have been doing, I think they've been doing a really good job. Anderson looks unbelievable. I think their fourth line has been playing very good hockey, and I think Anderson's been very noticeable. Not only just on the forecheck, but he's going after skill.
Starting point is 00:31:00 He's making his presence notice. And he's been a hard task for Tampa Bay. And listen, when you look at Sabrin, and I think Sabrin knows this too, that's a bad tradeoff. You know, you have a guy that can change a series, which in Josh Anderson can change a series, which he has. Game one, he comes out on the forecheck. He scores that nice goal.
Starting point is 00:31:20 He makes that big hit. on Dasu. You know, he's making his physical presence notice. And in the second game, he makes his physical presence notice. Again, it scores a big time goal. So it was just a matter of time just getting to him. And I think Sabrin, you know, he's not playing a lot. He knows his role. He's a great locker. A guy is great for that bench. He knows his situation he's in. Maybe with two minutes left, you don't take that dumb penalty. But to me, I think that changed the momentum of the game. The PK was a lot better, a lot sharper. People woke up on the bench. And And in overtime, five-on-five, they couldn't get past neutral zone, Montreal.
Starting point is 00:31:57 They were a completely different team, Tampa. And that's all because of one player. That's how much he meant to that team, Josh Anderson, which he ended up doing coming back. I'm glad he came back in overtime. But, you know, he's been a problem for Tampa and a big problem. And I think it just had someone had to do something. and I'm glad Sab stepped up because I know he's not playing a lot.
Starting point is 00:32:23 You know, he's been a huge piece for Tampa this year. He's been a huge addition for the locker and his presence, making the team feel a little bit bigger on the bench. So, you know, I'm sure he was probably feeling it in the penalty box, but I think the guys knew the situation he was trying to do. I'm sure he was sweating bullets. He's probably like, I'm never playing a playoff.
Starting point is 00:32:49 game ever again. But it worked out. And like Coop said, he goes, I can't control you know, he every minute of the game. You know, he's like, in 58 minutes of the game, I can't control what Sabrin does,
Starting point is 00:33:05 right? So eventually he's going to snap. And I thought it, I thought it played into Tampa's favor. Patty, what is the code for, I know you want to be intense and you want to show the other team you're going to play for keeps with the scrum, and the punching the guys in the face.
Starting point is 00:33:22 Does that just go on the whole series? Like, does it ever come to an end where it's like you can't take the risk of the ref taking one guy taking a shot? Or is it like it's just going to go on and on as long as these guys want to keep doing it? It's a bit, I don't know how you guys feel. It's been a bit frustrating watching it a bit
Starting point is 00:33:39 because it's been a lot of hugging and grabbing and no one doing anything besides here. When Perry said, screw it, I'm going to fight Carrier and just start throwing haymakers and then Gensel started doing this stuff. So I think at the end of the day, I think, you know, the rest will probably come in and say something. I'm assuming the league will come in and say, hey, if you guys continue to do this, we're going to have to just take one. You know, we're going to let you guys do this, whatever you want.
Starting point is 00:34:05 But if it continues and continues to happen, then eventually they're going to say, I'm going to take one, not just two. So that maybe we'll stop it a little bit. But, I mean, you've got to love this stuff. It amps everything up. It amps the series out. You know, Hegel eventually challenged up Koski there. And that was huge. Two elite players going at it.
Starting point is 00:34:27 And the magnitude, that place erupted when Hegel, you know, obviously you guys know what happened in that fight. But it's two good teams going on it right now. You know, you got to give Montreal credit. They are playing a very mature game. They're the youngest team in the Stanley Cup playoffs. and they look like a very mature team right now. Patty, just a quick follow-up on the two teams. Tampa, I don't know if you agree with this or not,
Starting point is 00:34:56 and I know they tied up the series. They haven't looked like they've gotten to their complete game yet. I don't know if you agree with that assessment. Is that more just on their end happen to pick it up, or do you give tons of credit to the HABs who have played reasonably well and for a young kind of team with not a ton of playoff experience? I think they really want to try to challenge.
Starting point is 00:35:17 to take the next step. Absolutely, and I think you hit it. I don't think you've got to give Montreal credit the way they're playing. I think there's a stat out there. They're number one in Forecheck and puck recoveries. So for how skilled they are. Are you an analytics guy now? Oh, no, sometimes I do my homework, O'Dok.
Starting point is 00:35:46 But I think just this is, That just goes to show you what Marty's, you know, obviously they have a skill, but they're doing stuff. They're forcing Palis. They're forcing Tampa to take Palis in their offensive zone, 200 feet from their net, because they're playing sound hockey. They're playing great hockey. They're breaking the puck out.
Starting point is 00:36:04 They're getting on the forecheck. They're doing all the little things that playoff hockey needs. Tampa has not gotten to their game, but, again, they're a veteran savvy team, and they know what it takes. That was a very gutsy win. they're going to take that win all day. Game two, they'll take that win, and that's what veteran teams do. They find a way Kooch kind of broke through last night.
Starting point is 00:36:24 Brendan Hagle's been probably arguably the best player on Tampa so far. He's been the one driving the bus. He's the one dragging everyone into the fight with them. It's just he's waiting for the passengers. You know, there's been a few passengers right now, and I think they know that. But again, a veteran team playing against a young team, they can gut those wins out, And those are the teams I find a way. So, Patty, we were talking before you came on about maybe what Tampa's trying to do a little bit.
Starting point is 00:36:53 The last couple years, they've gone up against Florida, and Florida's just bullied their way through. And you can kind of see maybe is that lessons learned, or is that maybe more what they would like to do to a younger, more inexperienced team in Montreal? Because it seems like there has been scrums, there has been that physicality, and a lot of it has been initiated by Tampa players. And you're wondering, okay, are they going to try and drag them into a street fight and see if Montreal will push back?
Starting point is 00:37:23 But it just seems like they want to play. We know what Tampa is capable from a skill standpoint, but now they're pushing back the physical part. You think that's because of, you know, the scar tissue from playing the Panthers for last couple of years? Yeah, Jamie, I think you've got to remember, too, those years we won. We did the same thing Florida did. we bullied teams
Starting point is 00:37:45 we bullied them out of the rink we did that and I think when you try to get back to that team and they added some great pieces with Gorgensen and Holmberg's obviously a big part of that finding that third line with Coleman, Gooddrow and Gord
Starting point is 00:38:00 you know I think that's the missing ingredient is just trying to find guys and I love what Koop did if you can play a guy like Sabrin to make their team feel a little bit bigger and I think Montres was doing a really good job, and I'm basing this back off of game, the last game of, not the last game of season, the last meeting they met in Montreal. Anderson took some runs at Cooch. Then Carlisle stepped in. So he kind of set that tone the last game of the year.
Starting point is 00:38:31 So they kind of knew what they were doing. They're basically saying Montreal was saying, hey, you're not going to, like you said, you're not going to bully us around. We got a guy, Jack guy. We got Anderson. We got some good guys that will step up to the fight too. So I think they kind of set that tone in Montreal and the Bell Center, the last meeting they had. And I think Tampa maybe could have probably got the edge on that. But I think this has been a kind of a fair fight, in my opinion, on both sides. Like, who's, you know, I think it comes down to special teams and the bullying, like, Tampa has the weapons with, like, you know, Haggy kind of drags guys in the fight. You know, Pairs is obviously Corey Perry.
Starting point is 00:39:09 You got Sabs. You got Lilleberg on the back end. You got some big guys, like, you know, Radish isn't afraid. You know, you got some Gordo, you got some guys, but, you know, there's a bullying, but I think they're kind of matching that, what they're trying to bring, too. So I think it's on both ends, the end of the day, it's when I'm looking at that, you've got to be a little bit smarter, though, than the other team, in my opinion, because this is going to go to distance.
Starting point is 00:39:36 So you don't want to keep putting Montreal on the power play and keep trying to do, you know, taking, you know, uncharacteristic penalties, and then find your way, you know, it's going to be a special team series. And that's how I look at it right now. It's a who's going to win the special teams because five on five, both teams really haven't found their groove. In my opinion, you guys correct me if I'm wrong. With Patrick Maroon, what's your, what's your projection on Florida next year, presuming they're healthy, maybe Bob returns. Do you think they just reinsert themselves back into the Eastern Conference? Absolutely. I mean, If they have Kachuk and Barkoff this year, I think it's a completely different animal, right?
Starting point is 00:40:18 You know, they're missing two big pieces, and Seth Jones went down early. You know, you're missing some key players, guys that kind of leaders in the locker room, captains, assistant captains, guys that kind of drag people into the fight. So I don't see Florida missing the playoffs next year by any means. They're a very good team. and, you know, if Bob does come back, I'm assuming if he doesn't, I'm assuming every three-agent goalie's probably going to be like, I want to go to Florida.
Starting point is 00:40:48 So if there's any out there right now. So I don't think their windows closing any time soon. I think it's just going to be like the lightning. You know, it's always going to be open. Bill Zito and Julian Breezwah are always going to find a way to keep that window open to give their team the best chance to win a Stanley Cup. great catching up with you pat we appreciate you doing this and uh well next time we get you on more deep maybe we get clint was it clint that's your guy
Starting point is 00:41:15 we gotta get him just hang up the phone with this loser and the link on there more details no no no no see he gets so mad yeah he gets so mad the strokes he i i didn't even get any good stroke holes i was doubling my we're having a bad connection we're having a bad connection here You know? Yeah. I love it. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:41:41 Thanks for doing this. We appreciate it. We'll do it again soon. Thanks, guys. See you, Patty. Absolutely. There's a cup winner, Patrick Maroon. And Ham and Egger, him and his boy, Clint.
Starting point is 00:41:52 I love that. Dude, you got to see, if you want to see a golf course, if you want to see cool pictures online, this guy's a member at a course called Pelican in Tampa. It is one of the best courses, and I played a lot of golf. golf around North America. There's only two courses in the world that have Augusta sand and their sand trap. Obviously, one is Augusta. Two is his course in Tampa.
Starting point is 00:42:18 This place is so sick. Yeah. Can't, no cards. Onica, Sorenstam? Is she at that track? No, she's not there, but she has her tournament term called there. Okay. Yeah, there's like water on 18.
Starting point is 00:42:32 Like, just so gourd. Every piece of grass, like there's nothing out of place. No carts, though? No carts? No, caddies. Oh, you got to walk it. Well, you're screwed, man. You should be getting strokes.
Starting point is 00:42:44 That's not your game. Like, you put you in a cart. It's a totally different story. Well, me in a cart, I'm a plus three handicapped. Me walking is like two or three over. Right. There's some discrepancy there. All right, Frankie Carrotto and 20.
Starting point is 00:43:00 Jerry's coming up. Overdrive continues up on YouTube Live. I'm Luke Wilson. Join me each week for Film Never Lies. Since retiring from the NFL, I've had a lot of my mind, and now I've got my own show. So if you're tired of lazy takes, if you want honest conversations, join us each week. Film Never Lies, available on all TSN platforms in the IHeartRadio app. All right, Frankie Corrado, in about 15 minutes.
Starting point is 00:43:23 Penn's need one tonight. Sid's got to take a page out of LeBron's book because LeBron went off for 28, 8, and 7 last night. 39 minutes. Wow. Guys, 41 years old. they're up to nothing in the series and watching sit through two games
Starting point is 00:43:42 he's getting frustrated Philly's been on them and it's a different sport clearly in terms of one guy having an impact but you know Phillies you know Phillies like their one main motive is to say these are the old dogs
Starting point is 00:43:57 man like we got to try to out skate them out hit them out intense them and make them have nothing in the tank and they've done a good job of it through two games. I love watching that matchup. You brought it up when the playoff matchups were set, Brian. Philly Pitt is something about it, man.
Starting point is 00:44:14 I don't know. I agree. Like, Sid in Philly tonight in the playoffs is a throw. I never thought we'd see that again. Did not see that as a possibility. You remember back in the day we had Lavi on the other day where Lavi was like, you know, he was calling Claude Jure, the best player in the world, way back in the day. just to kind of take a shot at Sid.
Starting point is 00:44:36 Yeah. It was like, because Claudeau-Juru at that time was elite. Like, not that he is, it now, but he was, he was one of the top players in the game. And Lavie was calling him the best player in the game. It was awesome. Yeah, Sid said it, man. I hate everything about Philly. Like, I just don't like them.
Starting point is 00:44:52 Pitt's got to play better, though. They've looked, they've looked neutralized. They've looked a little bit slower. I mean, Philly has done a number on them. And, you know, they're top players. I expect Pittsburgh top players to break through. I thought a little bit more was coming, as Brian mentioned, with all the receipts that were taken.
Starting point is 00:45:14 Still only two games, right? It's the first of four. It's not over yet. Philly's got to hold on here. But it is a big moment for Sid. It's a big moment for the Pence tonight. You go out 3-0. Curtains.
Starting point is 00:45:26 You know you're in big trouble. So more on that with Frankie into the next hour. Jerry coming up. You see Mike Tomlin is signed with everything. NBC. It sounds like he's going to be part of a football night in America, which everyone was wait for that. Everyone knew Mike Tomlin was going to get into media. Well, I don't like to comment on other, like, TV things, but that football night in America kind of needed a kind of a reboot.
Starting point is 00:45:48 Yeah. Tony Dungey, it was kind of the end of the road with that old shit. I'm not going to go in depth on my, yeah. I agree. I agree. It needed like a co-couse house. Like a reboot, man. I got you.
Starting point is 00:46:00 And they're going to give Tom on a shot. but Mike Brable's still, he's not going to the media. I mean, what do you make? We'll get into it in the next hour because the draft is tomorrow night. He's a key. Has that been confirmed or not? Well, he gave an opening statement that could not have deflected more without like. It was confirm or deny.
Starting point is 00:46:23 That's really what it was. He was like, oh, we're looking forward to the, this guy just got caught with pictures on top of a hotel and he's like, we're looking forward to the draft. It's a big weekend for the organization. Really big weekend for the Pats. That's a tough conversations with my family and the team, and you're like, all right. It's like, so are we confirming or denying? Yeah, I just, I couldn't get a read.
Starting point is 00:46:46 I think I got to read. I think I've got to read on what's going on there. But anyway, Jerry's coming up, Frankie, coming up, best bets as well.
