Eddie old chuck coming up little pucks and ponies
in mid-August I love that
and
we'll get into a number of things with Eddie we saw
at the Alinka Gretzky
tournament today in a semis
the U.S. beat Canada in a shootout
Canada had won that tournament three years in a row.
And whenever Canada, the states play international hockey
and the Americans have success,
you know the conversation's coming.
Are they chasing us down?
Have they caught us?
Do they have a better program?
And I have always said that that is completely bogus.
I'm not buying it.
And my primary reason for saying that
that I don't believe the Americans have caught Canada,
and I don't believe they're that close to catching us
is that
the superstar, like the greatest player in the game
is always Canadian.
Yeah.
And generally the top two or three guys are Canadian.
And I think that's the case right now.
Like if you look at the international team,
I would put McDavid McKinnon in McCar
ahead of anyone on the American team.
Oh, yeah.
They're the three best players.
If they went, if they were, the three of them were Americans,
they'd be the three best players on that team.
And McDay would be the captain,
and McKinna would be the assistant,
and McCar would be the assistant,
and everything would run through them.
And then after that, yes, there's depth,
and there's a lot of depth in the U.S.,
and there's a lot of superstars down there.
Matthews, one of them.
Eichael, Quinn Hughes, phenomenal players.
Hallibuck's a great goaltender.
But I think our depth can match the depth of the Americans.
He's a great goaltender until the biggest games.
He starts to mean something.
That's valid too.
Yeah.
You know, and that's probably another thing
that's worthy of pointing out.
It's in the biggest moments, you know, our Canadian goaltenders seem to have the DNA to match the moment.
I mean, it is true.
When you look at the elite players in the league, like you point out the three best Canadians.
And if you wanted to start sort of ranking players in the NHL, like, you'd go a long way before you get to an American probably.
I think Quinn Hughes would be at the top.
Kutra.
Yeah, Kuhn Hughes is probably right there.
But you go Kutrov.
I mean, he won the R. Ross.
Yeah, Kutra.
Drysidlis.
He won an American.
Drysidels obviously right there ahead of any American.
Those would be the five.
Pasturnack ahead of any American?
I would have Quinn Hughes and Matthews ahead of him.
I'd have Hughes and Matthews still in my top 10 in the league.
I would have, just off the fly, I'd go in some order, McDavid clearly won.
I think Drysettled 2, McKinnon 3, or McCar, 3, McKinnon, 4, Kutra 5.
That's my 5.
Those are debatable.
And then I'd probably go either.
Quinn Hughes, Matthews, 6, 7.
So I'd have two Americans at 6 and 7,
and then you can open the discussion of where does Passanette come in after that.
Where does Barcov come in?
Barcoves could easily put his hands up and say, what about me?
See, he never gets, he never gets a high ranking in these things.
Because the numbers aren't there.
But the guy is the, he's the bedrock of the best team in the league
and the two-time cup champions, three-time finalists.
I mean, like, you talked to, when we covered that team during the playoff run,
I mean, Paul Maurice talked about it.
He called the Barkoff effect.
Like everything is about Barkoff.
Like he sets the tone by when you've got the best player on your team,
the highest paid player in your team,
or one of them prioritizing things that benefit the team more than they benefit him.
Defense, obviously, being the number one.
The Selke winner.
Yep.
And it goes beyond just that.
Like, this guy is like a selfless kind of, you know,
the owner.
And the owner called him like,
the owner, I found that interesting with Vinnie Viola got up there and talked about the team
when they won the cup, talked about how they're servant leaders.
You don't hear that in sports.
You know, like, a lot of serve me leaders.
Like, Barcoves, like, treats everybody like gold on that team.
You just eat it.
There's no, there's no tier system.
It's not the stars over here and the fourth liners over here.
And everybody talks about how Barkov's really.
And Kachuk, too.
Kach's like that.
Yeah, Kachuk clearly when he got there.
I've heard, we've all heard stories of, you know, how he treats people and the training staff.
And by all accounts, Keith was the one that always was a proponent of that.
Like treat people really well, especially in the trenches and stuff like that.
It goes a long way.
Anyway, but the point is, you know, like, Markov, I don't think gets anywhere near enough credit.
Just because the numbers are, he's not up there with numbers.
Right.
And even on his own team, it's, you know, Bobrovsky, Matthew Kichuk, does get a lot of play because of who he is.
Yeah, of course.
Very worthy of it.
But, yeah, the Americans beat in Canada at the Hylinka Gretzky today.
And the Olympic Games will be here before you know it.
Best on best.
It's going to be an interesting ride.
You're a lot of fun, man.
It'll be an interesting ride.
I'm putting money on Canada, man.
I'm wondering what our next guest plans on putting this money in, too,
in terms of that battle, in terms of the king's plate tomorrow at Woodbine,
I'm going to be up there, cannot wait.
It's going to be a phenomenal weekend.
It always is at Woodbine.
Weather's looking good.
We got jobs a little bit last year.
It happens.
It rained out.
Was it postponed for a day?
Yeah, it was.
It was postponed for a day.
It's not going to happen this year.
Yeah.
Not going to happen.
Here he is. Pucks and Ponies in August.
I love it.
Our buddy Eddie Old Chuck.
How you doing, Eddie?
Hey, what's up, Brian?
Nice to be with you guys.
And, yeah, the weather is going to hold off for us.
And a little postponement was, I think, was a week last year.
And this year, it looks beautiful here at Woodbine.
So looking forward to being a part of the broadcast.
And hopefully we can make some people some money.
So nice to be with you guys.
And just to follow up, I caught you.
you guys talking about the Kachucks and the Olympics, and you know where my hat will be hanging
come February.
I got a good idea.
Considering I am an alum of Team USA back in 1984 over in Syria of Yugoslavia.
So I know where my buttered is breaded, you know what I mean.
As you should.
I wouldn't guess or suggest any other direction you'd take.
What was that like in 84, like after the Miracle on Ice in 80?
You know, was it supposed to be the miracle on ice, you know, two or what?
Like, what was that room kind of like?
Yeah, it was, I mean, look, I was, you know, I made the team as a 16-year-old,
and I played as a 17-year-old in the Olympics in February.
And I think I was probably just too young and too naive and just,
I thought the safest place was when I was out on the ice.
You know, you didn't have, because every town we went to, you know,
It was a parade.
We're getting keys to the city.
You know, the men's U.S. Olympic hockey team is here and, you know,
trying to follow in the footsteps of that miracle on ice team in 1980.
And, you know, I mean, unfortunately for us, I mean, we, you know, we played Team Canada,
I think, 10 or 12 times that year.
And then the last game we won right before we headed over.
We hammered him in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I think we beat them 10-4.
And then our first game of the tournament was against the main.
Maple Leaf and we ended up losing four to two in game one of the tournament.
So it was downhill from there, unfortunately, for, you know, for us.
But, I mean, it helped prepare me for the National Hockey League because, you know, look,
I was still a kid and here I am playing a year before the National Hockey League and I was
playing against men for a whole year that helped me prepare for, you know, for my NHL career.
So, I mean, it was a great experience.
Obviously, it was disappointing, but it was opening ceremonies and serious.
Areva were, I mean, it was unbelievable.
Like, it was just like, wow, you know, here I am.
Four years later after, you know, watching the Olympics in 1980 as a 12-year-old
or a 13-year-old and thinking, like, wow, I'd love to, you know, play there when I'm old.
You know, like when I'm 20 or 21.
Here I am as a 17-year-old.
So it was a great time of my life and never forget it.
And I will be going back for the Olympics for NBC.
I'm going to be working.
for NBC in the state, so I'm looking forward to going over there and being a part of the coverage.
Oh, that's awesome.
Well, you're going to be covering the big race, the million-dollar Kings Plate tomorrow, Eddie,
and 13 horses at Woodbine a mile and a quarter.
And I'm looking at the morning lines here.
It's a Philly, no time that has been installed as the 7-2 morning line favorite.
Where do you stand on no time, and what do you make of this race?
yeah i got time for the philly uh she looks like she breathes different air um and you know phillies have had great
success running in the plate whether the kings or queen and it's a race where a lot of horse players and
handicappers don't think that there's a lot of speed in the race meaning we're going to go a mile
and a quarter and you know when when they do break they think it's
going to be a little bit more of a slower pace.
And I'll just let everybody know when they're watching or tuning in tomorrow is like they'll
give a bunch of times in the corner of the screen or Robert Geller, the race caller at Woodbine
will, you know, get some fractions, you know, quarter mile, half mile.
When you hear them say three quarters of a mile or you see the split of a minute and 10,
a minute 11, minute and 12.
If you see it in that, a minute 11 range, like one,
11 and 2 or 1 11 and 4.
They're going a pretty good clip, but a lot of people feel like they're going to go maybe
112, 113.
So what that means is the slower they go, the better it is for the horses that are a little
bit closer.
In no time, the Philly for Mark Cassie and the Hall of Famer Johnny Velasco is coming
up north of the border to ride again because he wrote her in the Woodbine Oaks, which
won very impressively, can really be tactical and does want a target.
in front. So I think the speed of the race is going to come from the rail, the one mancetti
and the 13, Ashley's Archer. I think that's where the speed's going to come from, and I think
no time's going to sit there. And I also, I like the four horse scorching. I think scorching could
maybe trip out and sit in behind the speed of the race and try to make one run. But I think
you have to use the Philly to 10, no time, no question on your tickets, because I think she's
just that good. Okay. I'll be up there, Eddie. I'm looking forward to that. I mean, that's
the beauty of the king's plate is like you just you got so many different races to kind of
put yourself in a good headspace right
get yourself a bankroll bri get yourself some padded that bankroll
that's right that's right man and that's my intention and i mean how do you how do you
can you decap any of the other race i'm sure you are i mean the king's plate's clearly the
the number one race and it's going to be a blast once we get there but it's a fun of them
man i mean i know you've done it a lot over the years he's been all the biggest ones the
Derby, all the triple crowns. But man, the crowd's big. It's an awesome spot. Woodbine's got some
cachet to it back in your leaf days. I mean, it's cool.
They're ready. They're ready. The card tomorrow for for wagering purposes, it's deep.
There's a lot of class, and there are plenty ways to go. Like, I'll be honest with you can,
I'm going to go 4-10, 11 in the plate, just so everybody knows. I'm going to go with the
four scorching. That will be my pick. But you can, you can. I'm going to go. I'm going to go with the four scorching. That
will be my pick.
But you could go, honestly, like you could go five or six deep in the plate and you
could still lose because I think if it cranks up to be a race where all of a sudden, you
know, the jockeys are sitting there going, well, geez, you know, there's really not a lot
of speed in this race.
So I'm going to maybe, you know, send a little bit.
I'm going to get a little bit closer.
So maybe they do go faster and then that opens up the door for, you know, notorious gangster
or runaway again or, you know, maybe a bomber like the nine horse Watsonville Red
who I'm going to use just in case underneath because I think it has every chance to be about a 50 to one shot, the nine horse.
But I think the value is great.
I mean, they're putting on an unbelievable show tomorrow.
I know there's still some tickets available, so I encourage people to, if they got a supposed to be a beautiful day tomorrow to get out to Woodbine.
But I would say in the seventh race, Brian, you were asking me for maybe another play in there.
I mean, that's the E.P. Taylor.
I mean, a grade one, three quarters of million dollars.
They're going to go a mile and a quarter on the turf course.
The legendary Charlie Appleby, the trainer, is coming overseas for Godolphin and a Philly by the name of Diamond Rain will probably be second choice because the four horse, the four horse, the Philly, she feels pretty is, I mean, she's dynamite.
I mean, she's been the favorite, I think, in nine straight races and just got beaten her last race in New York at Saratoga.
I'm going to try to beat her.
I'm going to try to beat her with the shipper Diamond Rain.
So if you want to play a little three, four box there, if you want to.
to try to get the exact order to build that bankroll for the King's Plate, which will be
the 10th race tomorrow on the car here at Woodbine.
Beautiful.
Diamond Rain.
I'm on it.
100% I love that Charlie Appleby's coming over.
Make it rain, Brian.
Make it rain, Dave.
Make it rain.
Oh, that's our plan.
That's our plan.
And, you know, we've talked before about, you know, weather and trying to cap with all that
kind of stuff, Eddie.
I'm curious how the heat factors in, man, because it's going to be scorching tomorrow.
It's going to be hot.
Like, how does that factor into the way maybe the ponies run?
and, you know, the jockeys play it.
And how the track plays, too, because they'll be on the,
they'll be on the tapida, the all, you know, the all-weather surface.
So, you know, sometimes when it does get a little, you know,
human, it gets a little hot, sometimes the track favors, you know,
favors horses that can be a little bit closer.
So if you are watching every step of the way tomorrow like I will be,
you know, you see how the track is playing and you watch other races.
It doesn't matter the class.
just watch the races and see, well, geez, I only see horses that get out to the lead and go wire to wire.
There are no horses coming from, you know, from way back.
So that's something else to, you know, take care of it.
But look, they got water stations on the track.
I mean, these horses are taken care of extremely well.
And, you know, obviously hydration for athletes.
And these are the equine type, you know, they'll be certainly hydrated.
But it does play into it.
I mean, I don't care what sport you're playing.
I mean, whether you're playing, you know, pucks or you're playing baseball.
or you're, you know, you're, you know, you're a jockey or you're, you know, in the, you know, you're in the king's plate.
I mean, you know, you've got to make sure that, you know, you're not just showing up the day of the race and making sure that these equine athletes are, you know, drinking water and staying hydrated now.
That starts two, three, four, five days prior.
So it does have an effect on certain horses.
It does.
And the last time I checked, these horses can't tell people, their trainers and their jockeys that they're not feeling good or, you know, something's not.
not right. They just go out there and do what they're, you know, what they're bred to do.
So we'll see how that all plays tomorrow, but it's going to be a gorgeous stay here at Woodbine.
Yeah, sure we'll be Kingsplay tomorrow up at Woodbine. He's Eddie old Chuck, Eddie.
I'm sure you got your ace suit for tomorrow, man. You got to bring the best, right?
You know what? You know what? Brian, I think I might be, I might be cracking out one that maybe I wore here for the, for the beloved leaf back in the late 80s.
Believe it or not, I could still fit into it. I mean, believe it or not.
I love it.
Vintage.
We might have to, we might have to, we might have to butter me up to get into it.
Okay.
We can do that.
Yeah, you know, I got to get a, hey, look it, tomorrow's my birthday.
My wife told me, this is the suit you're wearing.
And I went, yes, honey, that, that is the suit that I'm wearing.
That of boy.
So we'll give Diana Old Check, the lovely and talented for 37 years.
My wife will give her their primary.
Mary assist.
Nice.
Pull it off tomorrow.
But look at it, I better, I better give out a couple of winners.
That's all that matters tomorrow.
That's what matters.
Yeah.
And for nostalgic purposes, do you head through the gardens before you head up or
Lake Shore Arena or something like that?
I'm going to stop back at me in Bloor where I used to hang my hat.
My first year here was in Toronto when I had the 42 Gs, you know, so I might have to
just do a quick little fly-by, stopping McDonald's have a vanilla shake and an apple pie and get
to it.
Absolutely.
Pop into the Madison, maybe for one.
That's like an old dog pregame.
That is how, hey, he scored 41 at the best of his career.
He's probably the exact same diet, same plan, everything, man.
That's the beauty of it.
He is Eddie Olchuk.
He'll be up at the Kings Plate at Woodbine tomorrow.
Cannot wait for it.
And best of luck.
Thank you for the details and all the info and all that kind of stuff.
We always love having you on.
Thank you, Eddie.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks for having me, guys.
You got it.
There is Eddie Oldchuck.
He'll be going to the Olympic Games.
That's pretty cool.
That's great.
NBC and yeah I'm curious like how that's going to play out you know NBC it's so massive like
they've been promoting the Olympics basically they go summer games and then they take like six
months off then they start promoting the winter games oh they take about six months off then
they start promoting the summer games the next summer games are in LA LA so they are going to
be promoting it during the winter games oh yeah don't forget in two years we're in L.A
but NBC goes so, so heavy for the Olympics, as you could expect.
And the same thing will apply up here,
a CBC, TSN, Sportsnet, kind of this big consortium.
But I'm curious, you know, what it's going to look like with the NHL players back
in terms of how it's covered, you know,
because in 18 and 22, it just, the men's side, the hockey, it just didn't, it didn't pop.
I was there, man.
It wasn't.
It wasn't popping.
Tough to get enthusiastic about it.
Like he got McDavid at his first Olympic games and Sid at his last Olympic games.
That's the beauty of.
It would be pretty cool.
Incredible.
Yeah.
I mean, it's, you know, you can spend time sort of lamenting what you missed because we did miss something, right?
The fact that they skipped those.
Or you can just celebrate what you got.
And what we got here is a chance at some, you know, iconic moments, right?
And that's all you can ask for it.
Like McDavid gets a chance to have his.
Sidney Crosby Golden Goal moment.
Yeah.
Or if it's not McDavid,
somebody else step up and make it happen for themselves.
Yeah, I mean, again, we don't know who's going to make the team.
We know Sid's going to be on it.
I think if he's healthy, Drew Dowdy will be there.
I believe he's going to be one of the eight defensemen.
I think so.
So there'll be two guys who have Olympics experience on your team.
You know, both of them were there in 10 and 14,
which is pretty incredible that we're getting into 2026,
and we're going to have two guys on the Canadian team
that have two gold medals.
And they have not been at the Olympic Games in 12 years
once they finally get back to that.
That's pretty incredible. And a testament to the greatness
of those two guys and just the longevity
of their careers. Like Sid's a lot. He's already on it.
Oh, yeah. Doughty, again, it's not a guarantee,
but I think he'll end up on that team.
I think so. But what other country
can say that? I mean, I don't,
I mean, we have to go through the list. I don't
think any of the Americans would have been there
in 14. I don't think so.
No. So they have a completely
fresh start.
Sweden
Hedman might have been there in 14.
Carlson would have been if he's on the team.
I mean, I'm sure I could find different guys.
There'll be a couple, but
that's, yeah, it's a whole new world, man.
Yeah. It's a new generation and
we've been waiting to see them and I guess we got a little
taste of it at the Four Nations, which was fun.
Big time. But this is a different beast, right?
Like the Olympics is a different beast.
That's a different level of magnitude, importance.
It's a different style of play as well.
I mean, that's a part of it that, again, I think favors the Canadians, quite frankly.
Like the Americans, it was raw, raw, kichucks, we're going to throw hits, we're going to fight,
we're going to drag you into the war.
That's not, that doesn't apply with IOC rules.
Yeah.
Double HF rules.
Those were NHL games being played in Montreal and Boston.
That's not coming.
There will be three fights to start the game.
That's not happening.
You want to throw a big hit?
They might throw you out of the game.
Yeah.
They don't like it.
Well, they get that late hit rule.
where they do penalize you for hitting beyond the
once the puck's gone man you can't hit people
and they you know you got to be careful with that one
that's that's bit a lot of guys over the years but
I'll tell you what though the weird thing
I had a colleague that was over in Italy
for the summer and
a couple weeks ago I think it was and he went to Milan
that arena is not even close to being built you
like what are they going to do it's not even close
it's still a construction site
yeah it's going to be just
fresh paint on the walls.
It's what it sounds like.
It sounds like the Italians are like, yeah, we'll get to it.
Hockey's not a high priority.
Yeah.
Whatever.
It'll be done.
But like you to your,
I remember it was like that in Sochi where you were literally walking off the plane
and they were like nailing up boards and like you were going into venues and you were
walking up ramps that were just being finished.
Like sawdust on the ground.
Yeah.
It was, that's what it was.
Yeah.
Like it, and the accommodations, the media village was brand new.
And you can smell the, you can smell the dry wall on.
the paint and it was just like everything was just just they got it done right at the last
second yeah you think they would maybe have known like when they were awarded the games 12 years ago
or whatever it was yeah exactly that they might want to figure that out you know how these things
go there's just delays and you know complacent problems procrastination maybe a little graft here
and there you know that seems somewhat likely taking a few off the top yeah the old well
actually it turns out our guys can't show
show up that day unless
I don't know where that shipment went. I'll have to get another
shipment. We'll find that. We'll figure that out.
Yeah. It's funny how that works.

were talking about the jays obviously and they're the hot ticket in town the amount of people that
ask and got to read on jays tickets and it's like oh yeah can't help you out you know can't do it
it's funny man i got a lot of people that were offering me jays tickets early in the season you know
if you need some tickets, let me know.
Yeah.
Not so much anymore.
Those emails don't come in anymore.
Yeah, it's funny.
And I saw Jennifer Hedger.
Hedges down there at the dome.
I started doing a pregame on Sports Center with Kagan.
And Hedges, like, full-blown Jay's reporter from here on out.
That's great.
Yeah, it's amazing.
Because, you know, and she's been down there.
I was talking to her again.
I saw her this afternoon.
She's like, the buzz down there.
It's just incredible.
Like, it's just so much fun to be around this team right now.
I went to, like, it was an afternoon game last yesterday,
And after the show, I went downtown, and just the streets after the game.
Yeah.
It was incredible.
Like the number of people just walking around, the patios were packed.
Well, day games in the summer are the best when the team is playing well.
Yeah.
Like a Thursday afternoon game against the Cubs in August, if they were 50 and 70,
would still be busy because it's a cool outing and the Cubs only come here so often.
And, hey, why not?
It's August.
I think a lot of people are bringing clients out or bring their team out.
Or, hey, it's a business day and schools, whatever.
it is but you get a game like that where it's meaningful they find a way to win the jays are
leading the american league east pouring out into the streets at 630 in a summer you can't beat that
i mean yeah you like every patio is just pack with people in jays gear it was just it was wild yeah
it's a great great scene yeah it really is really fun to be down there it's just you know it's just
that's that's the beauty of it was like that in 2019 with the raptors and it's you know it's it's like
that any time the Leaves Haven to have a playoff game.
Yeah, oh, yeah. Leaves in the playoffs.
He's amazing. He gets like that. Never mind the fact that
theories or, you know, the lack of success going deep,
it's still, like, there's something to be said about that.
Like, it's just an incredible, infectious kind of energy that you just,
it's great to be around. You can only get it with sports.
Yeah. There's nothing else that can drive that type of civic pride and
togetherness and just the idea that you want to be there before the game
after the game, you know, and just talk about.
it like that's the beauty of it just go grab some pints and talk about it with people 100% and
you know what like living living in the city like you live you live in the suburbs so yes i'm you live
a very very beautiful you know placid you know like very polished life but the city the city's
gotten a lot grittier since the pandemic i don't know what it is i mean i'm sure there's experts
that can tell you what's happened to our society and what's happened to our urban centers
but like I think like last night it didn't feel that way you know what I mean like like it puts
it puts a nice shine on the city it puts more people there's life it breathes joy life and
and there's and there's optimism and it's and it's just fun and not that the greetingness goes
away but you know there's just when there's more people enjoying themselves it's it feels like
it you know it feels like it should yes exactly and that that has uh I don't think you're
alone in those experiences and
type of kind of viewpoints of what's
going on. It's disappointing.
But that's how much
you kind of rely on the teams to kind of drag
you out of that. The Js keep this
going. It's only going to get bigger and bigger and crazier
and crazier. Exactly. You know, you get
into September and October, like going into that
stadium for playoff games.
It's amazing.
And they get, you know, they get the short end of the
stick generally when it's
four games being played, 1237,
337.
We'll be able to complain about that.
Yeah, 8.07, you know, 937 or whatever it is.
Like, they're going to be in the afternoon.
That's when first pitch will be 1237 on a Tuesday.
Probably.
But so be it.
Yeah.
Bill is going to be packed.
It's going to happen.
That's just the way it's going to be.
Yeah.
But you can live with that.
You can win the games.
As long as they're playing.
It could be worse.
They could just not be playing and on their way home.
Look, you were talking about Bassett's home road splits.
Like, they got 40 home wins.
They're 40 and 20 at home.
It's not just Bassett.
It's pretty good to be a ticket holder.
But there's a reason for that, man.
Like, it's a, it's a hell of a place to watch a game.
And I can only assume, judging by their win-loss record, it's a hell of a place to play a game.
Yep, for sure.
Jay's Rangers, tonight we'll get to our best bets a little bit later in the hour.
Let's fire up a quick, Dear Hazy-B.
People send in a tweet.
They write us for our professional advice on life things.
Dear Hazy-B, every morning my boiler has a gas leaf.
thinks it's the baby, dear
Hazie B. If you want to come to
Hazie B, I need honesty from you.
Hazie, you got dumped a lot. Tell
me, tell them, tell them. Growing adults
with birthdays, it's assanae.
All right, dear Hasey B, brought
you by Boston Pizza, Canada's favorite
sports bar, enjoy $15 lunch at BP
where you get an entree aside and a drink.
You get it all in 20 minutes or less. A fast
lunch doesn't have to be fast food. See you for a
$15 fast lunch or your local Boston pizza.
This is a question that does come up a lot,
and we've got a couple here, but with the J's,
in the hunt. There's a Ferris Bueller element to
yesterday. It was very fitting. They played
the Cubs. Of course, Ferris Bueller from
Chicago and famously went to a Cubs game
and the idea that
as meaningful games continue to
be played in the afternoon during work
and school hours,
dear Hazy B, a lot of these questions
come in, how do I pull the shoot
on work and get away with it?
How do I pull a Ferris Bueller?
Which is a reference
disappointingly that is becoming more
and more rare because there's just
very few people under the age of
35 that have any clue
what that movie is
yet it's not like I know like I
know young kids that have been forced
to watch it by their parents and loved it
it's a brilliant movie because it's so much fun
it's such a great movie like it's a timeless
kind of movie right like it doesn't have
like I know it was an 80s movie
but it doesn't feel like an 80s movie
no it's an unbelievable movie
incredible yeah but it is
but it is one of the and the reason it's so
incredible and so enduring I think it's because it's
It's just like it's a universal theme.
We all want to skip school.
Yeah, exactly.
I want to play a hockey.
And the principal's coming for you.
And your sister is mad that you get all the breaks and all that kind of stuff.
I get it.
I get it.
It's an awesome movie.
And when you're long out of school, you still want to play a hooky once in a while.
Yeah.
And I think that's coming here.
Yeah.
And honestly, I think the way to do it is you have to have your alibi locked in.
And you have to commit to it because a lot of times when you're trying to pull the shoot on something,
You start overthinking it.
You start overthinking, oh, man, I think that guy, he's on to me.
He's probably not.
Not really, he probably doesn't really care what you're actually doing.
Very true.
So come up with the story, stick to the story, find a way to get to the ballgame.
And trying to avoid TV cameras is increasingly difficult now, especially with drones and everything.
So I don't know how you're really going to do that.
Yeah.
But stick to your story.
That is the emphasis if you want to pull a Ferris Bueller and find a way to get to that ball game.
Well, you've got to avoid the cold play kiss cam.
That is a high priority.
Yes.
Yes.
If you're there with a mistress,
yes.
Maybe don't, you know,
snuggle while Chris Martin's looking for different people in the crowd.
I don't even what the Js do with kiss cam.
They probably do at some point in the series,
this season,
but yeah,
you're right, man.
You got to stay out of those,
you got to stay out of those shots.
You got to stay off the broadcast.
You know,
don't have too good a time.
Don't do anything.
And I'll show up a face paint or a sign.
Right.
you know that's right you got you do have to keep a very low profile yes you do and i mean into like
look the blue jays they promote work from dome right like oh they love it essentially pretend you're
at work nowadays although i see more and more of these you know the banks all want people to come
to the office the government's doing government saying five days a week yeah in the office so it's going
to get tougher it's going to get tougher for people to do the remote thing and pretend you're working
when you're actually watching playoff baseball absolutely especially when you're so committed
to playoff baseball.
Yeah.
You know, you can mail in an inning or two if you're there in May or June, even August.
But if you actually are lucky enough to get to an afternoon, midweek game in the playoffs
and you're pretending to be at all at the workplace, what's going to happen?
If, like, Vladdy's up 3-2, 2-out, 9th inning ball game on the line,
you're actually going to pretend as if your emotions are in check?
Well, how many times are you watching a game?
And I watch a ton of games all over Major League Baseball.
And how often do you watch the people in expensive seats?
on their freaking phones as the game is being played, not even watching.
A lot.
And it's a lot.
Yeah.
And some of those people might be the people that I got a boss email in.
Oh, I got it down.
Check in with the boss.
Oh, yeah, boss.
Everything's good on the account, blah, blah, blah.
Yeah.
But, I mean, there's a lot of that.
You don't want to be that person.
If you were, like, if you're at a playoff game, do you really want to be the person?
Especially behind home plate, too.
Well, exactly.
You don't want to be that period.
You want to be committed in the moment.
but that's probably the other lesson to learn here.
If you're going to pull this stunt,
do not be standing sitting behind home plate.
No.
Don't be beside Getty Lee.
Even Getty moved out of the frame.
Like his seats are not within camera range of a standard pitch.
They'll span back, though, to make sure Getty gets in there.
Once in a while.
I saw him there last week, I think.
He's not in like, like, it's a standard center field pitch shot.
He's not in that, is he?
Right.
I don't think he is anymore.
He used to be.
Yeah.
And that's, I guess, because of what they've expanded, everything.
I mean, they've changed the background.
The teacher like twice is big down.
Right.
Like there's less people back there.
Getty's got a lot of space.
Yeah.
Just let Getty be.
It's a big baseball fan.
He loves the J's.
Let them have a good time.
I don't think anybody bothers getting.
No, I don't think so.
I don't think it's,
it's Canadian celebrity is not that,
although he's a global celebrity, obviously.
Oh, yeah, man.
But Canadians are pretty polite.
Do you put Rush anywhere in the world and give people 24 hours to show up?
That place would be packed.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, from South America to Europe.
Huge.
In South America, man.
Oh, yeah.
I think their biggest shows were in.
Brazil. Yeah, they played in Brazil to like 250,000 people or something.
Nuts. Like, just, but you never know it. Like, Gettie is the most humble
guy and, you know, like, Alex Lifeson's great guy. Yeah.
Yeah. For sure. Yeah, they're great. Obviously, Neil Pearton, St. Catherine's
legend, Port-de-Lusie legend. So I grew up in,
Rush played my high school, baby. Back in the day. There you go.
Back in the day. There you go. But, uh, yeah, man, it's, you know,
how do you how do you balance how do you play hockey to watch a jay's game it's going to be a it's going
to be a challenge you're a challenge here's a challenge for you cj tweeting in my ex recently
joined my company and we live in the same area and she suggested we carpool since doing this
the h o v lane has been a lifesaver but my wife is starting to feel a little bit weird about
the whole situation but i'd hate to lose the h ov how do i convince her this must continue
You're a grind, but you might have to stand to this and start tearing up and just be so emotionally connected to the HOV lane, right?
Just convince your wife that, like, this is actually changing your life and you're getting home so much earlier.
You can leave the house later, right?
Because those HOVs pop up.
The crazy thing about the HOV is like the segregation of HOV usage.
You know, like there's, it just showed, like all of a sudden you're on the 403 and there's an HOV.
No HOV on the 401.
You know, like if you're a city guy, and I know I'm not necessarily anymore,
but I grew up in the city, I never had an, there was no HOV lanes.
There's nothing.
Couldn't get that on the Dawn Valley Parkway.
That's a good point.
You know, like yeah, now you can get the buses that can, like the go bus might get,
what do they get from the 401 to like York Mills, maybe?
The go bus can get a little bit of access to an HOV lane.
And someone always abuses it.
There's always some guy in a civic that's flying down there.
Down the bus lane.
Yeah, the bus lane.
You know he's going to get clipped, and then he'll complain.
Oh, I didn't know.
They know it was a bus lane.
Oh, do you?
I had no idea.
Oh, really?
Bumper to bumper, but that lane's wide open for you and every Honda Civic owner in the world.
Yeah, this is a problem.
The H-O-V lane, though, man, it is intoxicating.
I will say that.
I was thinking of that curb your enthusiasm, an episode where Larry has to get to the Dodgers game and to use the H-OV lane and he picks up a prostitute.
It's brilliant, though, man.
It's just.
And then he's like, oh, you want.
want to come into the game, you have the extra ticket, too.
She's like, what's going on?
Yeah.
H-O-V, though. It is very, very intoxicating.
I think you've got to lay it on thick and just tell your wife,
this benefits everybody. I'm in a better mood.
You're in a better mood.
Now, you're an idiot forever telling her that this was your ex.
That's the problem here.
But I guess you didn't want to get caught in a lie at some point.
Well, yeah, you don't.
You go to the Christmas party if anyone ever has those anymore.
And then, hey, this is who we carpool with.
Oh, it turns out we used to date.
You're in trouble if you didn't bring that up.
You might have to find another carpool, mate, though.
Yeah.
This can't work long-term, Hayes.
No, I mean, yeah, I guess it is reasonable for the radar to be going off a little bit.
Well, I mean, I guess.
Like, even the HOV lane, there's some stop and go traffic where you're going to be sparking up conversation.
That's what I mean.
You're in the car a long time on Toronto commutes.
Yeah.
I mean, there's no short commute.
So you spend quality time together.
Very true.
And I'm not sure there's many wives that are going to be okay with that.
Now, maybe if you get the wife, if you get the wife and the ex in the same room,
room together and you go have dinner and you prove to her that, you know, it's a long time
in the past and you just, you're just carpool mates now and that's all you are.
Good luck.
Good luck with that, man.
I don't like your chances.
No, maybe you got to just give up the HOV land, get back to reality.
Join us.
Larry David, you know, you get who you can get to get into the car, but it can't be, it can't
be your ex-well, and I wouldn't suggest a prostitute.
I wouldn't, I wouldn't suggest that, but I'm just saying.
I'm not saying that would be the best idea.
I'm not saying, you know, there's other people on the planet.
Right.
You know, find another one.
I don't know if the whole carpooling thing is really taken off the way people hoped it would be.
Like the amount of carpool lots that are built all over the GTA.
And based on my experience, I don't see a lot of people parking there.
I don't think so.
You know, like there's one out by us, this massive parking lot that they obviously invested a lot of money in.
No one's ever parking there.
Really?
Not that I ever see.
interesting you know because i think people like it's too early man i just kind of want to be on my
own and listen to some music or listen to first up or whatever and just i don't need because the
carpool thing is all it's you got to be on you know what i mean hey how are you jim like you're
kind of know each other and we happen to work at the same place so let's take this 45 minute
commute together every single day yeah it's a good no it's a lot of people that are like i just
i don't really need the carpool i can't say i know anybody that carpool that's you make a good
point. Yeah. Like, I mean, I think of people, in principle, it makes a lot of sense. I get it, but
it's kind of like if you want to be around other people, wouldn't you just take the go train?
Yeah, exactly. You know?
Jump on public transit. Right. I mean, like, to me, carpooling, is it even faster than public
transit? If you're forced to be around people, you don't really know and you probably wouldn't
rather not be around. Right. I mean, I'm thinking public transit is the better option.
Well, and there's also the element of, you know, uncertainty going, you know, the other way,
let's say there's some issue at work, and the guy you carpool is like,
hey, I'm going to, I got to stick around for another hour.
Yeah.
Oh, okay.
Well, I guess I am too, because carpool guy has to stick around, you know,
or conversely, hey, I can kind of get out of here early.
Is there any way you can leave to?
No, can't.
Oh, okay.
I guess I'll wait because carpool guy can't leave yet.
Exactly.
You know, you're just, you're beholden to the carpool,
the rules and regulations of the carpool.
That's the thing, man.
It's a community thing.
You've got to be open to the community needs, right?
It's not about selfish priorities.
And guess what?
Most of us have selfish priorities.
Absolutely.
All right, Best Betts powered by Fando coming up.
Jay's Rangers tonight.
We'll tee that up next.
Dear Hazy Bee is brought to you by Boston Pizza, Canada's favorite sports bar.
Enjoy $15 lunch at BP where you get an entree, a site, and a drink,
and you'll get it all in 20 minutes or less.
A fast lunch doesn't have to be fast food.
See you for a $15 fast lunch at your local Boston Pizza.
All right, best bets powered by Fandu.
Make your picks and assemble the same game.
Parlay and seconds on the Fandoah Sportsbook app.
One of the J's money line tonight.
Not a lot of juice.
I get it.
DeGrom's on the mound.
I understand he's on the mound.
I get it.
Minus 106 on Fandole.
They're the Js.
They've been playing exceptionally well.
Bassett at home is Prime Dave Steeb right now.
Yes.
So I like Bassett tonight.
I like the Jays.
I think they'll get to DeGrom in some capacity.
It's not going to pitch it.
nine inning shut out tonight.
At some point the bullpen's going to roll over.
And I just think the mojo of the Js have right now.
I like where they're at.
You're not paying a lot of juice for them.
They're going to win a ball game at home tonight.
And the Rangers don't score.
That's right.
So I like where you're going.
Yeah.
J's tonight.
Best Betts powered by Fandor.
Hey, Sanchez hit last night, eh?
His little tip on the red blacks.
I mean, didn't look like, I went to bed.
It was like, what was it?
It was like 2710 for Winnipeg.
And I was thinking,
What's Sanchez talking about red blacks?
Cover the number.
Cover the number.
Red blacks plus four.
Yep.
They covered it.
Lost by a field goal.
He was so confident.
I was like,
oh, okay.
Okay.
That's a classic backdoor cover.
What a crazy thing.
Like the definition of a backdoor cover.
I didn't watch the any,
but I had to go watch the highlights.
That was one of the nuttier games you'll ever see in the same.
Yeah.
Well, Winnipeg just allowed them to kind of stay in it.
Well,
that was,
and they kick a field goal.
They're up,
they're up seven with a minute 11 to go,
and they kick a 57-yard
field goal.
Like, there was a kind of divide on that, whether that was a good move or not.
But, of course, when you miss it and it gets run back for a touchdown to tie the game,
they're going to say, yes, you.
Yeah, I think, you know, someone in the media is going to be waiting for you after the
game.
Yes.
The question your, you know, sensibility on that place.
Because Winnipeg ends up winning it, it's not that big a deal.
Right.
But that was a crazy crazy.
Yeah, that was wild.
A great call by Sanchez.
You're right.
And we got Argos and Alex tonight, CFL on TSN, Friday night football.
Luke Wilson out there?
I'm glad you didn't pick that one as your best bet.
How do you bet between the 2 and 7 and 2 and 6?
Yeah.
I mean, Luke was suggesting there might be something more there for the Argos
and maybe they can turn it on.
I mean, tonight, obviously, both sides, you have to win tonight.
If you're the Argos and you're thinking we can get back into this,
you cannot lose to Edmonton.
No.
You have to beat the Elks.
But I guarantee you people in Edmonton are saying the exact same thing.
You're going to get back in the race.
You have to beat the Argos at home.
Exactly.
So weather might factor in, though.
Apparently very cold, rainy, wet.
Not good out there in Edmonton.
It's going to be beautiful here.
Tonight, dome open.
Tomorrow it's going to be beautiful.
Kingsplayed tomorrow.
Looking forward to that.
And next week, the ladies are in town out in Mississippi.
It's going to be great.
Brooke Anderson will be here, Nellie Corder.
And we're getting closer and closer to
Leafs back in camp.
Happers back in camp.
Jay's really chasing that ALE's prize.
Good time to be a sports fan.
It really, really is.
All right, Dave, great seeing you, man.
Have a great weekend.
There he is.
