TSN 1050 on the TSN app, your home smart speaker up on TSN4, Brian Hayes, the O'Dog, Jeff O'Neill, Dave Feshchuk in here. How are we feeling this afternoon? Are we still teammates, or am I going to get my super team? No, we're teammates. What an awful pick by Luke and Conno.
Starting point is 00:01:00 company last night, Noodle, son. Dude, I told you, man, the Giants were going to get killed. One thing you always look too deep into is you always go to this. Oh, the weather. It's going to be cold. I think, like, you overthink the weather. Well, I didn't make the pick last night, so I don't know why you're addressing me
Starting point is 00:01:16 in that manner. But I hear what you're saying. I do. A lot of times it is overthinking. Like, a lot of times it's simply, who do you think's better? Who do you think's going to win? That team will also cover the number. And that's what happened last night. And that's impressive by New England. Like, the Giants stink. They're awful. They got kickers who are chunking field goals.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Did you see that? Yes. Young Wayku, that was one of, I've never seen that ever in my life. I didn't know that was a possibility. To chunk a field goal. That's a 60 degree wedge after you bomb a drive, right? And you're staring. Over a football.
Starting point is 00:01:50 Over a football. A football. Yeah, a 47-yard attempt. And afterwards, he claimed he saw the bottom of the ball oscillating, which I think is a complete cop out. Dude, no he didn't. No, he didn't. No, he didn't.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Yeah, he claims he pulled up on it. He claims he pulled up on it. Right. Which is kind of what everybody that chunks a 60-yard wedge claims. Exactly. Like, swing thoughts. Swing thoughts. But, I mean, that was wild.
Starting point is 00:02:19 And isn't that just emblematic of, we are the New York Giants? That's the Giants. You've never seen something this bad. Now watch this. The worst thing about it is, if you've ever, like, shank the shot and golf it's you can deal with the shank but it's every time you grab that club moving forward you're like that's in there like he's got that in his brain space where it's like i could dig my toe into the ground and not even make an attempt yeah that's in his is that's
Starting point is 00:02:49 right the field goal yips whoa like it has to be you know you have to be thinking about that oh of course like next time you go out there 47 yard or am i going to chunk this ball am i going to trust myself to actually kick. And like Jackson Dart, that image of him mouthing, oh my God, is so perfect for the Giants.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Then you've got to address that if you're him. You got to go over and say, hey, I know that that was out there. Sorry, pal. A little shocked. I forgot we were on Monday night football. I forgot that there were cameras everywhere. But impressive win by New England. Drake May, man, that kid can play. He is a stud quarterback.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Brable's got that team cooking. you know, they still got the bills left on the sked and we'll see what Buffalo can do, but it sure feels like a formality. Now they're going to win the AFC East. Which I never would have predicted. I thought they would take a step forward with Brable, but I didn't think this.
Starting point is 00:03:42 No, me neither. I didn't see this in the cards 11 and 2 and likely chasing down that top seed in the AFC period. Like they might get a buy in the first week and everything's got to go through Foxborough. It's like the last three years just never happened. Yeah. Like it was Brady.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Okay, a little, you know, don't worry about those two or three years and now Mays showed up, but now you've got to deal with this? Amen. Again, in New England, if you're in the AFC, it's crazy. It makes you think, like, didn't Vrabel sit for a bit and wait for a coaching opportunity or no? I believe he missed a, did he miss a year? What are other teams thinking?
Starting point is 00:04:14 These guys just sitting there, and they're all trying to think outside the box and get these wonder kids that are offensive geniuses. That guy was sitting there. Yeah, he did. He missed a year. He got fired, and then he sat out a year. Because remember, the chatter was him and Belichick available at the season. same time. Oh, yeah. And then New
Starting point is 00:04:31 England obviously brought them in, and it's worked out beautifully. So, credit the Brable and the Pats. And let's not forget, you know, for all these years, we had the debate, is it Brady, is it Belichick? Why are the Patriots so damn good and so damn annoyingly dominant? Is it
Starting point is 00:04:47 Bobby Kraft? Maybe it is the only one still there. Maybe it is Bobcraft. I think it's, like, to answer the question, I think it's both of them, right? You got to have both. You got to have the quarterback. You've got to have the coach. He's got to have the weapons. And you got to have the owner. Got to have the owner. Got to have the owner.
Starting point is 00:05:02 It has a clue. Got to have the owner in pro sports. Got it. The owner that what? Wants to spend the cash or does it like wants to approve the right transactions? What, what? Well, like you always hear, like culture gets thrown around all the time. Culture this, culture that. And I think most of us would lean into the culture is established in the locker room or the dressing room. But I think it's really established with ownership. You know, who you hire, how you allow people to operate, what kind of freedoms you allow people to have, what kind of standards you have, you know, how you treat
Starting point is 00:05:34 players, you know, a sense of belief within the building. Whenever a player's drafted there, you say, okay, I know that they run, they're run a certain way, they have certain expectations. Because coaches come and go, players come and go. The owner's the only one that doesn't. Right. The owner stays. The owner's there. The owner can literally make a decision on anybody in the building. If he wants you here, you're here. If he wants you out, you're out. And there's different forms of ownership. There's some that are heavily involved. There's some that are more standoffish.
Starting point is 00:06:05 Some of them work. Some of them don't. None of them have as many rings in recent history as Robert Kraft. Yeah. And he's right back. And again, they, like even, I think Kansas City, they usually come out with like anonymous player polls all the time. And New England did not grade well recently
Starting point is 00:06:23 with the way that their facilities hold up, with the way, you know, certain things. which kind of went actually counterintuitive to what we're talking about. I think Kansas City ownership wasn't necessarily graded that well, yet their teams keep winning. So who's voting on that? And I think you're probably talking about ultra-luxurious things where people have TVs and their locker stall and like phones to whatever,
Starting point is 00:06:51 stupid stuff that has nothing to do with winning. That is probably all those complaints that you're hearing. Right. And maybe that's giving us the answer right now. Exactly. Like the best owner actually wants a team to be established, as opposed to a country club or a modern, you know, whatever it is, modern day operation. A lot of that stuff comes down to who's got the newest stadium, right?
Starting point is 00:07:12 Like you got so far as just jaw-droppingly gorgeous, apparently, and the facilities are amazing. Jerry World is state of the art, obviously. But, yeah, like, you know, Foxborough is, you know, not exactly a new stadium. Certainly, uh, Arrowhead. Arrowhead definitely isn't. Right. So I think a lot of those player polls are like,
Starting point is 00:07:31 who has the nicest family room for the, for the wife and the kids and the girlfriends and all the rest of it, who has the nicest sauna, who has the nicest cold tubs, you know, all that stuff that players have come to expect, to your point, there's more country club than locker room.
Starting point is 00:07:45 I think that's what we're talking about. I think you're right, and that's why the Blue Jays are grading so well recently, because they've invested in all that. Yeah. Like at the Rotter Center, Dunedin, a state of the art.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Now, in 15 years, they'll grade out, right? in 15 years, all of a sudden this place stinks. You got to pump some billions into this thing. But it generally is, you know, what have you done for me lately in terms of ownership, pumping money into it
Starting point is 00:08:08 and having some sort of a vision where and it works. You know, like the Dillon C's contract became official today, which took a while. Like it took a while. It was a week ago, over a week ago, I believe, when it was reported, which that's a long physical. What are they putting this
Starting point is 00:08:24 guy through? I could have been out of town, but I think for 200 million you might want to end your vacation wouldn't you maybe fly up or do whatever you have to do and i'm sure we'll hear from him soon but uh that became official and the jays are linked to everybody right they're linked to everybody oh yeah and who he it's flipped to the point where now you know you believe that they actually can get these guys and they might actually have to start saying no like they might actually have to to pick as opposed to being chosen, which always felt like a part of their process, right? Like maybe a player will accept their offer.
Starting point is 00:09:01 For now, it's like, I think if they want Boba's shit, I believe they can get Bo back. You know, it's going to cost them a certain amount of money and they'll figure that out when they figure that out. Kyle Tucker, I don't know enough about him. We'll see. Maybe he's got his eyes set on somewhere else, but it kind of feels like Tucker might be in a situation where he's just looking for top dollar and Toronto works fine for him. And the Jays are going to have to choose. You know, which if that's the case, if that's accurate, and that's a lot of the reporting out there from a lot of heavy hitters in baseball,
Starting point is 00:09:32 things change quick, you know, because this time last year it was, can we even get in the meeting? Is there a chance this guy's even going to accept our pitch? Are we getting used for leverage? Are we getting used for leverage? You know, and now it's more, it feels like other teams are like, what are the Jay's going to do? What are they actually up to?
Starting point is 00:09:50 Because they pounced on Dylan C's and we'll see what else they do the rest of the offseason. winter meetings starting early next week. Isn't that where a lot of this stuff goes down? A lot of the pieces start being put in place in terms of, like Tucker's going to go first, more than likely, in terms of the big contract, kind of established whatever the market is, and then they'll take it from there. But there's no stopping you from signing a guy.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Guys are getting signed. Bullpen arms are starting to get signed, right? Jay's signed Dillon C's. If you want to pay the price, you can pay the price. But, yeah, I think at the winter meetings, you'll expect more activity. And that's when trades start to pick up as well. Like, what's going to happen? What are the Jays going to do other teams?
Starting point is 00:10:32 But it'll be fun. It's going to be a fun couple of weeks, a couple of months. I think tracking what the Blue Jays end up doing. Duffy coming up later this hour, we got Leaves Panthers on TSN4 tonight. Big game. Big game. For both teams. Big game, big week.
Starting point is 00:10:46 You got the Panthers tonight, Carolina on Thursday, Montreal at home on Saturday. Well, we had a Buffalo Sabres superfan walk in here, and he was some happy today, wasn't he? Yes, he was. The Sabers beat up on your Winnipeg Jets last night. And as I told our friend, there is no bigger insult in pro sports than when your team... Just stop it. You don't have to just rub it in. It's a fact. I know.
Starting point is 00:11:10 The Jets had a player's only meeting after losing to Buffalo, and it happens all the time. It's so insulting to Buffalo that there's a player's only meeting. Always. There's two things. that are insulting to teams. When a team loses to you and has a player's only meeting, which is, there's a direct correlation. Happens in Buffalo all the time.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Anyone that loses to Buffalo, close the doors, we've got to figure this out. And the other one, which I think is more insulting, and this is a coach that always does it generally, is when a team beats you and comes out and goes, we were awful, that team deserved to win tonight. That is so insulting. Like, you know who used to be famous for that was Pop.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Popovich used to be. to it all the time. Oh, yeah. Roll into town. Raptors were terrible. Spurs would win by 12. He'd be like, we were awful tonight. I can't.
Starting point is 00:11:58 That team was so good. Man, did they work their asses off tonight? So well, coach. Like, Pop, you won by 12. You pulled your starters out with three minutes to go. What the hell are you talking about? So insulting. But he'd do it all the time.
Starting point is 00:12:12 He wasn't alone. A lot of guys do it. But when a team is so bad and you beat them and you say, you basically apologize. Yeah. Well, that's what Brad Marchand does with the least. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Everything he talks about, oh, those guys are different now. They got a lot of a different look. He knew. If Florida wins tonight, he will lay it on so thick. Oh, they play so different.
Starting point is 00:12:31 They look different. These guys mean business. They'll be right there at the end. It'll be nonstop. And then it's just the thing that really kills you and, you know, kind of reveals him as the greatest troll
Starting point is 00:12:42 in the NHL is the whole stuff about, and that market data, you know, it's like, it's like we don't understand what we're watching. Like he said, I know. It's been 25 games and they played good for three of them, but we have no idea what we're watching. The people that watch this team and just put so much pressure on these guys and basically have no idea what they're talking about.
Starting point is 00:13:00 That's essentially what he's saying. Yeah. And it's just, it's laughable, but it's expert. Like he knows, he knows exactly what he's doing. And there's a certain amount of, there's a certain, you know, portion of the fan base, I think, that buys that and believes that and says, you know what, Marchand's speaking for me. That's what I said yesterday that's so crazy is he has, he has been. Hill in the Leafs for 15 years. He has been the biggest villain this team could ever have.
Starting point is 00:13:26 You couldn't create a player in a lab that a fan base should hate more. And there are fans that are thanking him for his service. You're right. Thank you for speaking on my behalf and the behalf of the players and all that. It's crazy. But it also, you know, it comes with a level of confidence that you have to appreciate because he knows he's going to show up. Like that's the crazy thing about him and his career.
Starting point is 00:13:49 not a big guy, wasn't a high draft pick, right? Wasn't a well-known name coming out the queue. You know, kid from Halifax, what's this guy got? What's he all about? Joined a Boston team. It was really good. Started on the fourth line. Had to build himself up.
Starting point is 00:14:04 And he is so confident that he is going to show up and play. And that's, and produce, exactly. And I'm curious how the least respond, not to him in the antics and, you know, his commentary, but just in general, because the least are coming off a good win. Scott Lotton is trying to kind of drag that fight into them. I saw Lotton today say, we don't like them, they don't like us. Okay, that's great. Does Austin feel that way?
Starting point is 00:14:29 Does Nielander hate this team? We'll see. Does Morgan Riley hate them? Does Joseph Wall? I hope so. I hope so. I hope they show up and look for a fight tonight, not literally, but figuratively. And this would be a big win.
Starting point is 00:14:42 The Leafs can pull this off. Like a big big win tonight. The biggest key for the Maple Leafs is if they're smart enough, which they should be, because they're a number. older team and they've been around the block to understand you're feeling good after the Pittsburgh game and everybody got their goal and everybody's Lucy Goosey and can you flip the switch and say that's not even going to the Pittsburgh Penguins look like they had a secondary Halloween party the night before the game well and they responded last night they did but it's not
Starting point is 00:15:08 going to be anything like that so be smart enough and veteran enough to understand you're going to have to fight for every inch you're going to have to dump the puck you're going to have to battle you're going to have to be physical and it's going to be a completely different game and the score at the end of the night is going to be 3-1, 3-2, or 2-1. So do you want to commit to that game? I hope so. Yeah, I hope they pulled. I think they can.
Starting point is 00:15:28 It's just a matter of will they do that tonight? Will they do it? And look, they have to look at this as a game they need badly. And it's a game that Florida is vulnerable, man. Like, yeah, the Leaves could feel sorry with themselves and say, well, we're vulnerable. Carlo looks like he's going to be out, might need surgery. There's no sign of Chris Tanev. Anthony Stollars, no one's quite sure what he's.
Starting point is 00:15:49 up to. And those are not good storylines. And you can definitely, if you wanted to be a pessimist in that locker, and you could say, oh, we're screwed without these three guys. But you could also just look across the hallway and say, they don't have Barkov. They don't have Matthew Kuchuk. I mean, this is
Starting point is 00:16:05 a very wounded, wobbling, defending, two-time defending champion. And this is our moment here. Like, this is when you've got to get these guys. Like, we don't want to see these guys in the playoffs. Nobody wants to see them in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:16:19 So let's keep them out of the playoffs. Right. Exactly. Launch yourself back in, you know, it's December, but pick up two points tonight, put yourself that much closer to that playoff line, but also knock them further down. I think every team that plays them has to look at that.
Starting point is 00:16:31 That has to be the mentality. You do not want these guys to be the 8th seed, the last wildcard in the east with Barkov potentially coming back with Matthew Kachuk, potentially getting healthy. Like, that would be a nightmare. Yep. Nice reward for having a great season. You play Florida in the first.
Starting point is 00:16:46 That would be an absolute night. nightmare for a team. Terrifying. Face them at the 8th seed. Terrifying, because they got a lot of guys out. You mentioned the two big boys, but there's players that are out. Look at Tampa. Tampa's dealing with a lot of injuries. And, you know, again, the Tanev
Starting point is 00:17:02 and Carlo out, that's two of your top four, and they're going to be out for a significant amount of time. It's scary. For sure, it's not a positive story, and they've got to overcome that. But Hedman and McDonough been out. Those are two of their top four in Tampa. They keep winning. They keep playing. They keep rolling. And I'm curious where the Sam Bennett
Starting point is 00:17:18 storyline goes tonight, where, again, if the roles were reversed and Player X knocked out Bob last year in the playoffs, player X would be in trouble tonight. You would have the most difficult night of his career. Do you think Sam Bennett should be expecting that tonight? Who's going to do that? Well, I think Dakota Joshua. I think Bobby McMahon can lean on him. I think, you know, are there Jake McCabe in a position to do that? that? I don't know. I don't know who's going to, like, go up and challenge him. I'm not sure
Starting point is 00:17:54 who that would be. But even if you don't challenge him, can you make his life difficult tonight? Can you catch him a couple of times? Can you scrum with him and punch him in the head a few times? Correct me if we're wrong, but he put Stolars out fairly early in the series. Right. Playoffs, I know I hear you, but like playoffs are always a little different. Was there any sign of retribution in the rest of that playoff series after Anthony Stolars was not? Even the idea of when he touches the puck, he's going to get his ass handed to him. like hard hits you didn't really see that didn't see it i don't know i love what you're saying i love the idea of it the question is will you actually see it tonight that's
Starting point is 00:18:28 a lot of those things that you just discussed in that one sentence it's not what these guys are about so why would it show up tonight i don't know well and that yeah it's a part of their profile that i think has to change if they want to have success like because the you would think the color of joshua would say i wasn't even here guys but i'm going to kick that guy's ass tonight because this is my team now and I know what happened and I'll deal with it. Who knows if that happens? Like it just feels like a moment that
Starting point is 00:18:56 I don't know if it would galvanize him or not, but I don't think it could hurt. Like it feels like you put yourself in that room someone goes up to him and maybe he doesn't accept the call and maybe Bennett goes, I'm not doing that or whatever. You know, he's the right to do that.
Starting point is 00:19:12 You know, he's fought before he will fight. I would guess he'd probably accept the challenge. Like my guess would be Bennett would probably say sure, let's go. Especially if you're not, like, don't jump them or something like that, if it's off the draw. But Tampa would do it. Florida would do it.
Starting point is 00:19:27 We'll see what the Leafs do tonight. Tampa, Florida, have had some wars. Yeah. Over guys getting hit, like Parkov getting hit or Hagel getting hit or, you know, Act Vlad doing something. Yeah, because it was like you hit us, we're going to hit you back. I don't care if it was intentional, not intentional. If it was just, you know, someone's going to have to pay a price for that.
Starting point is 00:19:46 But. Yeah, but we've been waiting for that. a long time of this team. I know. But I'm with you, O, like, if you're one of the new guys, and like Dakota Joshua,
Starting point is 00:19:53 like you're coming off a decent little stretch here where he's actually kind of started to look more like the player they hoped he'd be with a little more, you know, a little more presence out there. Like that wouldn't be a bad move, right? Just to say to yourself, hey,
Starting point is 00:20:06 I can take this little project on here and go at Sam Bennett, give Sam Bennett a cheap shot or, or, you know, cross-check him or, you know, whatever. Take his head off in some way or another that would at least draw a little bit of attention and I can say, hey, you know, like, I know what happened last year.
Starting point is 00:20:23 I'm a member of this team now and it's not going to happen anymore. Yeah. That would be a glass half full. Yeah. Whoever's going to take on the project, better be ready because that guy. Oh, yeah, he's a tough customer. That's a thing. Like, he's not a heavy weight, but he's tough.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Yeah. Like, he's tough. And that's why I think he's an old school guy that would be like, he'd almost be expecting it. He's probably surprised it didn't happen during the players. So the goal is for him not to finish the, the game and say, I can't believe one guy didn't touch me tonight. Yeah, I guess that's what it is.
Starting point is 00:20:51 It doesn't have to be a fight, but someone's got to send some sort of a message. Someone in a scrum's got to pop them. Someone's got to, if he's got the puck down the boards and you've got a chance to finish your hit, you have to do it. Have to do it. Like, it just feels mandatory. Maybe that's
Starting point is 00:21:07 an old school. Simone Benoit's my guess. Benoit? Yeah, and he's back in the lineup tonight. They gave him a game off to attend a personal matter. He's trying to, he's been talking you know, very introspectively about he's not happy with his game. He hasn't been happy the way he's been playing. He's hard on himself.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Like, that's a play you can make. You pinch down on the boards and catch Bennett in a big moment coming out of his zone. You know, like that would not be a bad thing for Simone Bennett to do to energize this group and, you know, energize this fan base. Because right now, like, you know, you feel like, to your point, like, Sam Bennett's tough. Like, you think you're going to be cheap. He can be cheaper, right? He's proven that throughout his career.
Starting point is 00:21:50 And he's also a really good player. He's the reigning Konsmite trophy winner. It's just not about the ruthlessness. The ruthlessness isn't the only thing that makes him good. But like you got to get back at him. You can't get back at him in November for what they did to you in the playoffs because it's just not on the same level. But you can chip away at it.
Starting point is 00:22:08 Yeah. You can at least make a state, but that we're a different team this year, that we see things differently now. And we see you in our sightlands. and we're going to have a crack. Yeah. I don't think you can overstate
Starting point is 00:22:20 how big of a night this possibly can be for the leaves to launch into something else. Like having played well, you went two year last three games, big game in Florida. You go out getting a win, play aggressive,
Starting point is 00:22:31 get some retribution clean, not crazy. No one's calling for anything stupid. But just play with a bit of a chip on your shoulder and a bit of an attitude tonight. You might galvanize the market because the market's kind of waiting for it. They always will swing back.
Starting point is 00:22:46 regardless how people respond or feel about it or define it. Lee fans are waiting to jump back on. They're waiting for you to show them anything that can get people excited again. And again, it has the potential for a big week. You get a win tonight, get a win in Carolina. Then the halves
Starting point is 00:23:02 on Saturday night in December, that's going to be a great five downtown. Great vibe on Saturday night at Scotia Meg. You get that. Again, it's crazy to think, considering how they've played this year. But things can change quickly. It's on them to try and do it. All right, Duffy coming up. And we've got MJ from the rink as well.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Again, the game on TSN4 tonight. Confirm it tonight coming up just over an hour from now. We're streaming on YouTube live on TSN's YouTube channel. Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and up on TSN4. Overdrive continues, brought you by Fanduel, bringing you more ways to play your game your way. James Duffy. I don't know where Duffy is.
Starting point is 00:23:37 We had a book signing right now, possibly. Oh, yeah, that thing is flying off the shelves. That's funny does that guy need? Like, give it a rest. it's a great read man great book and Duffy's an esteemed author I have I haven't read the whole thing yet but I have read multiple chapters
Starting point is 00:23:55 great stories in there read the Frankie chapter I have not gotten to that yet you sound like you totally sound like the host on like CP 24 where and I'm not saying this happens where they're like what a great read and you know they didn't read I swear I've read the first few chapters there's a Bruce Boudreau chapter in there Brucey
Starting point is 00:24:13 I think was the third chapter really quality stuff I don't remember the other chapters I read but I read some chapters it's a very good read Duffy knows what he's doing and it's a very good read knowing Duffy you read it
Starting point is 00:24:27 hearing his voice that makes sense like he oh yeah it reads like he would speak you know I don't know why I'm pumping his tires so much but we love J.D
Starting point is 00:24:40 right it's a big week for him. You know, he's probably doing it. He's preparing for the big World Cup draw on Friday. That's right. Because he's going to be down there in D.C. They're doing it in Washington, and we're going to find out who Canada's playing. So in a few days, we'll find out
Starting point is 00:24:55 where they'll be playing. Obviously, at BMO, they could be out in Vancouver, but big, big draw, man. So what are the odds? I think he gets invited to golf with the red hat wearing president? The president. Isn't that kind of, like, he's going to be rubbing shoulders? Like, they'll be, they could
Starting point is 00:25:11 pass each other in the hallway. Here he comes. There he is, J.D. No, you're good. We were just talking about your book and how you're going to be down in D.C. Stop. I'm just asking. It's Christmas time.
Starting point is 00:25:25 I haven't brought that up. I was saying I love the book. I've been reading the book. And he's calling me a blatant. How much do you got to pump up the book, though? Like, I know you're on a PR tour. I've told you. I feel very uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:25:38 The last time was way worse than this time. And it's like, when does it end? It's almost over. You have to promote the book. I know, but O is right. I don't like posting on Instagram all the time. And, you know, you do feel a little like a used car salesman. I think people at home, they're watching it, and they're like, how much money does this guy need?
Starting point is 00:25:59 I don't think that's what they think. I think it's a, it's a passion project, right? It is a passion. Thank you. It's a passion project. Oh, really? I think so. Like a gardener that just dies to be.
Starting point is 00:26:13 be in the garden all summer long. If you were to compare the money you make writing a book to the money you make on television or that you made in the NHL, it's like minimum wage basically. Hey, let's just have some real wage. You cannot write a book.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Look, unless you're, who's the Harry Potter? Let me just get to the bottom of it. J.K. Rowley. Billionaire. A.J. Hawke Rowland. Unless you have, every book you write is a passion project. So beauty's number two. How much change do you throw in your pocket? I want to know.
Starting point is 00:26:44 I don't know. It depends if it sells. But would you make $200 grand? Would I make what? $200 grand? I don't think so. I don't know. No?
Starting point is 00:26:53 Talk to his agent. So you're making $1.50. I'm very uncomfortable with this segment. No. It's a great book. It is a great book. A passion project. It's a passion project.
Starting point is 00:27:03 That's going to be Beatty 3. Beauty 3, the Passion Project. That's right. As it should be. What are you, sitting down with guys like you to hear stories? It's but a dream of mine my entire life. He's honoring the NHL PA and the NHL alumni. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:27:18 With his great right. Yeah, shouldn't you support that? Why does everything come down to money to you? Why is it always about that? Because I know that's the only reason you did it. Not passion, money. I'd be such a dick. Vemently disagree.
Starting point is 00:27:30 Vemently. We're also talking about the big draw on Friday. Yeah. So you're going to be down there in D.C. How much am I making for that? You want to know? Is FIFA greasing you? What's the extra fee you charge DSM to do?
Starting point is 00:27:43 camera. There's no extra feet for the draft. Where do we, where, like how big of a circus is this going to be? Excuse me, I just dare if the guy's just about to pull out the first thing and Duthy comes by with his book and he's like, buy beauties three. You should bring some down there. Bring some down there for the guy picking out the
Starting point is 00:27:59 balls. You're going to have the rub shoulders with Trump? Yeah, is Trump going to be there? You know, I had heard last week that in the rundown for the show, they had a lot of a four-minute speech to the president, to which I said, okay, we're going 45 minutes.
Starting point is 00:28:14 Oh, yeah. Because he's never made a four-minute speech. Now, the last version I saw, they'd taken that speech out. Now, when the president hears that, that would be interesting because I don't think he will go through the show not speaking. So, that will be the great wildcard as far as the run of this event. Where in D.C. is it?
Starting point is 00:28:31 It's at the Kennedy Center. Oh, wow. It's a small space, apparently, for what it is. And only the rights holders are in there. So it's, I think, Fox in the States and us and whatever it is, as techer or whatever the Mexican station is in there. It's going to be really interesting.
Starting point is 00:28:47 There's a ton of VIPs coming, and I would say, I was trying to think of this today, is there, it's got to be the biggest sporting event in the world that doesn't involve sports being played. Like the NFL draft would be probably the biggest in North America, but it's annual. There's no event bigger and more important in the world that doesn't have actual sport being played than the World Cup draw. Right. And for Canada, it's massive. because they could, you know, they could get something very doable, like Australia and Scotland and Cabo Verde or whatever, and you could get Colombia and Norway and Italy, which would be death, essentially, for them.
Starting point is 00:29:33 So we have this once-in-a-lifetime event in Canada, and this draw will go a long way, I think, in telling you whether Canada has a chance to get out, right? Absolutely. Of the group. And listen, their program is really humming, and they've, they have, you talk about something that has changed drastically and dramatically over our lifetimes. It's the Canadian national team. But the reality is, Scotland, praying for Canada. Yeah. Like, they don't want Brazil or something like that.
Starting point is 00:29:59 Oh, everybody's probably, it's a two-way street. Even though Canada's been better than the states and Mexico, over the past four years, essentially, mostly. realistically every team in those other pots is hoping that Canada is their pot one group 100% every other nation in the world the Leafs scum playoff time everybody wants the Leafs 100%. They ever want a World Cup game?
Starting point is 00:30:22 Yeah then that's acceptable. That's not a I mean I'm sure Canada will use it as some sort of bulletin board material but that's the way it should be because we've been in one World Cup in whatever the last 30 years we scored one goal essentially so it's up to Canada to prove them wrong. Like numerically, whatever they are, 26 in the world, they're good.
Starting point is 00:30:42 But, yeah, they haven't proven anything in a World Cup. So, yeah, every one of those teams is, in Potts 2, 3, and 4 is hoping they get Canada. Right. And by the way, like, not to get too deep in the weeds here, but just it's going to be confusing for a lot of people because there's so many different rules involved. There can only be one team from each federation in each group, except for Europe where there will be, I think, 16 European teams.
Starting point is 00:31:06 so there'll be four groups that have two European teams in it. And there's a pretty good chance Canada ends up as one of those because really what matters for Canada is pot four. Because if you win one game, you're going to get out of your group, okay? Those 48 teams, the top two teams in every group make it, and then the next best, the eight best third place teams go through. So there's never been a better chance for Canada to go through. So winning one game, if you get any, if you get, I keep saying Cabo Verde,
Starting point is 00:31:35 or New Zealand or somebody else. Haiti's in it, aren't they? You can't play Haiti because they're Conccaf. Oh, man, we want Haiti. Jordan is the other one. You want Canada wants Jordan, Cabo Verde or New Zealand. But because of the way the algorithms and everything work, like they can't play Haiti, they can't play Curacao,
Starting point is 00:31:57 there's two of the playoff groups that they can't play because there's a Concaf team in there. I think someone run the math and it's like an 80 or 90 percent chance they're going to get one of the Euro teams, which means potentially Italy, Denmark, somebody like that in pot four, which would be a bit of a disaster. Yeah, that's not good. Because you want like fist pumping, right? You want them to be like so happy who they play.
Starting point is 00:32:18 Yeah. Because it really, you're right. The whole process is fascinating. It's incredible TV. Yeah. And it changed, like the whole, the federations are going nuts based on who they get. And we're talking about like, you know, coaches insulting teams when they win games and they say, man, we were awful
Starting point is 00:32:36 tonight, but we still won. And, you know, players only meetings when you beat the Sabres. And the same kind of thing. Like, the imagery of a federation going crazy because they got a garbage team is so inspiring. But it's the reality. Like, they're dying to just get certain teams
Starting point is 00:32:52 in the pod. The other thing, Brian, is, you know, the last time, we did the straw the last time. And it was kind of a middling, kind of boring result for Canada. Belgium was probably the least interesting team they could have drawn from the top group and, you know, Morocco, Croatia. And I remember Hurdman was kind of shrugging his shoulders when he was in the studio with
Starting point is 00:33:10 us when we did it. I think the last World Cup would have been the World Cup where Canada needed to get like Argentina or Brazil and have that big game as they return to the World Cup when the stakes weren't very high because nobody expected Canada to do anything. Now the stakes are higher. Now is the time I don't, I mean, Italy, Canada and the opening game in Toronto would be amazing. Awesome.
Starting point is 00:33:30 But you don't really want that if you're Canada. you don't want to get but you're not getting Argentine or somebody like that but you don't want to get Columbia or somebody like that from the second pot so although it's going to challenge so many people like Joe from the bridge Andy Patrill all our friends
Starting point is 00:33:46 who have been rooting for Italy forever they're Italian it's like all right who you're rooting for Canada versus Italy it'll be Italy I hope not I've had I hope not I've had this conversation with a lot of football fans from this Croatian
Starting point is 00:34:02 last time when they were in, and they were like, sorry, man, I'm Croatia, I've been Croatia forever, and I was like, what, but you're, you're, you were Croatia forever because Canada wasn't around, but you are, you've lived your entire life in Canada, now Canada's in there. You have to be Canada. Sorry, I can't, I can't, I think a lot of Italian fans are the same way. It's not only Italians, to be clear, it's all, like, from, if you're an English fan, if you're, whatever it is, absolutely. And I don't, I don't think we should resent that as Canadians. I mean, I just grew up, I had nobody but Canada. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:34:33 So, but yeah, it's going to be super fun. And if they, not again, now I'm getting into the weeds again, but by chance if they get a good draw and they could win the group, like it's the difference between winning the group and coming second and third is so massive. If they win the group, they have their game, they stay in Vancouver, they get eight days off, and then they'll play a third place team. So they could very realistically get to the group of 16, where they will stay in Vancouver again.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Wow. And home field in soccer is probably bigger than any other sports. So you finish third, you're going to like San Fran or something and probably playing Argentina or something like that, and you're done. Trouble. Right? So, yeah, it's going to be a really fascinating day. Yeah, I cannot wait. The World Cup.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Are you going to be with Canada at the outside? I mean, look, Luke and Stephen and Kevin, those guys are the soccer guys, and they'll cover most of it. I mean, Luke and Stephen will be doing the Canada games, but they'll be hosting. I just stick with Canada the entire time. I know my limitations. It's going to be awesome, though. It's going to be amazing. Can't wait.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Yeah. Got anything for us? I'll be fired up to watch that as well. Getting paid like 75 grand per game. That's pretty good. Every time Canada wins. I have a bonus in the contract. Yeah, you are.
Starting point is 00:35:47 It's outside of your contract. It's outside of your contract. Are you invoicing for the DC trip? Be honest. No, I am not. We've got to have some golf talk here, Duffy. You are a Mr. Golf around here. Certain Eldrick Woods
Starting point is 00:36:00 turning 50 on December 30th, just had his little press conference the other day, talked about his seventh back surgery and all the rest of it, not playing for a little while here, but he's allowed to start ramping up the training. Like, what's your, what's your, like, what's your Jerry's percentage
Starting point is 00:36:16 on Tiger playing on the seizure tour? I think he will. I think that maybe he never wanted to his whole life, but he's so competitive and realistically, he's not going to be competitive
Starting point is 00:36:32 on the PGA tour anymore. I guarantee you he doesn't think that. I'm sure he doesn't think that. That he can't win on the PGA tour? But he's no longer... He used to... I don't know if he ever said this out loud, but he told everybody I'm not playing on the seniors tour.
Starting point is 00:36:47 But he was asked about it and he said, I think he will. I do think he will. And now again, I've kind of... I hate to say this, I've kind of lost interest. Like, we've been through this so many times all these comebacks. And, you know, five, six years ago, I was like everybody else.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Man, Tiger's back out there again. It was all, we go to the Masters, and it would always be the number one story, no matter how hot Scotty Sheffler or Rory Mcorre was. If Tiger was playing, it was the number one story. He was probably the number two story if he wasn't even on the property. But I said a couple years ago, I just don't think it, I don't, he'll always move the needle, but I just don't, it's not the headline story anymore. It doesn't excite me when Tiger's in an event because, you know,
Starting point is 00:37:26 it's going to end up being a WD or probably a miscut. And that's not knock on him. He's just been through way too much physically. Yeah, I mean, like these back issues, like he talks about it as if he just, you know, it was like he'd fight in a flu or something like that. One of these doctors has got to have told him he can't swing a golf club by the head. You'd think it would be close to one more surgery away from just not doing this anymore. The interesting thing, though, and maybe you guys talked about it,
Starting point is 00:37:54 if Tiger did play, so if a Champions Tour event in, Dubuque, Iowa is up against maybe not a major on the PJ Tour, but the next, maybe like the Harbor Town or something like that. Like who's... Does it outdraw?
Starting point is 00:38:12 I think Tiger and the final group at a senior event would outdraw it. I think you'd have like Rich Lerner and Brandl, the whole crew flying up to do you. What if they're up against like sawgrass, like the players? No. No, I think
Starting point is 00:38:26 a flash in the pan chance to see Tiger playing in a legitimate tournament, like maybe winning something, even if it never mattered to anybody. Yeah. I just think he's so big, and there's such a massive audience for that, it would probably trump everything else. Yeah. I hope he does.
Starting point is 00:38:43 I hope he does. It would be great for the Champions Tour as well. Yeah. It would be spectacular. Well, we'll see. Yeah. All right, J.D. Well, we've got Leash Panthers tonight.
Starting point is 00:38:53 Big game. I know. We're probably going to have to roll out. I can see our opening montage of. black and white of last year, game seven, get all the Leaf fans, mad at us for showing that again. Sad music. Ken, now they're back.
Starting point is 00:39:08 The two last place teams in the Eastern Conference. One desperately needs a win. O'Dong, calling it a must win. Leaves Panthers next. I know it's coming. I heard them editing. I think I heard my voice in there yelling about something. Your voice is always the negative.
Starting point is 00:39:22 I can't believe I just watched that. The worst game I've ever seen. You do end up in a lot of times. Tees. This franchise is a joke. We're cursed. Leaves Panthers next. So always, I'm setting the tone for how awful things are good. You've become the
Starting point is 00:39:40 opinion guy at the network, so that's how you end up in the teases as opinion guy. I charge per opinion. I'm sure you do. I invoice per opinion. Why don't you write a book called Opinions by Brian Hayes? I might do that. Just takes. My takes by Brian Hayes. I might do that. Yeah. How much time did it take you? Don't expect to
Starting point is 00:39:56 takes a lot of time. Like, I know it takes a lot of time. It takes a lot of time. It's a labor of love. A book takes a year, probably start to finish. You've read a couple, right? Half a. Would you say a year? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:08 Yeah. I'm not writing eight hours a day or something. Right, but you put time aside, and you're like, I got to chip away here. Yeah. Okay. I mean, who's the guy writing the, like, the Game of Thrones book or whatever? I don't know what the fire and ice. Isn't he, like, 12 years writing the next one is still not done yet?
Starting point is 00:40:24 That's a different thing, man. You're creating a world. Yeah. That's, imagine getting halfway through that. Losing your train of thought I don't know where I'm writing I don't know where I'm going Like this thing's toast
Starting point is 00:40:35 I can't get out of it I gotta start over again I gotta go right back This plot makes no sense I just created a character That makes no sense No way crap My lead character got killed in the last book
Starting point is 00:40:45 What am I doing? Exactly I totally forgot about that Yeah All right JD Anyway the book promotion Thank you everyone for putting up with it It's been great It's close to over
Starting point is 00:40:56 And then you can unmute me And hopefully on my social media. Now, get out there, man. Buy the book. Wherever you buy your books. Right? We got a lot of people
Starting point is 00:41:03 writing books that we love. A guy who got a free copy should not be the one to ask you how much money you made off it either. And he wrote something nice about you. Yeah, very nice. The thing will stay in my dressing room
Starting point is 00:41:12 for six years. No offense. Why would he do that? I could write whatever about you and you would never read it anyway? I haven't even read what you wrote. What if it was defamatory? I'll consider that for the next book.
Starting point is 00:41:26 You should. Just absolutely sewer. unauthorized Jeff. It will sit on top of the other one first. I do have stories that could destroy you, but I've left them out because I've been kind. Everyone does.
Starting point is 00:41:39 All right, Leaves Panthers tonight. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy yourself down in D.C. Thank you for having me. Cannot wait. Friday, the big draw on TSN World Cup. We'll see where everything plays out and everything lands. And prior to that, Leaves Panthers tonight on TSN4 and right here on TSM Radio.
Starting point is 00:41:54 Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and up on YouTube Live. All right, so we just gave Duffy in his book, a lot of promotion, right? He should maybe be paying us for that air time. Like, that's a lot of promo for his book. And it's a phenomenal book, and we love Duffy. We also love Annie Petrillo, and Andy's got a new book out as well. And he's doing big numbers, and people love it.
Starting point is 00:42:14 Andy talking about her whole story, being a trailblazer in broadcasting. We love Andy Petrillo. So this is the time of year. Go out and buy books. Excellent stocking stuff. Excellent stocking stuff. And if anybody wants one of Dutthie's books, You can have mine.
Starting point is 00:42:28 It says to Jeff on the inside, but I will ship it to you. Okay. Well, there you go. All right. Duffy's book, Andy's book. Go buy books. No doubt. Big book, book people on the show.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Let me ask you this. When's the last time you read a book? Front to finish? Front to back. The whole. I'm telling you, I'm reading Duffy's book right now. You know what I actually just read recently? I haven't read it since I'm a kid.
Starting point is 00:42:54 What's the answer? Oh, front to back. Literally two weeks ago, and I'll tell you which one it was. You know Harvey Peanick, the little red book, the Gulf? I just read his book again. There you go. My dad had it. I remember reading it as a kid.
Starting point is 00:43:05 And like a lot of this stuff is probably so outdated. Like Harvey Peanick was from the 70, like he was Tom Cites. He was at like the Austin Country Club and he was Tom Cites. Ben Crenshaw was his guy. Like those were his two like phenom kids. But I just read the book. It's a great little read. Like just little stories, do this, do that, little stuff.
Starting point is 00:43:26 Probably not going to help me at all. I would assume if anything, it would probably hurt you. But you ride it front of back, the whole thing. Yes, I flew through it. I'll give it to you. Will you read the Little Red Book by Harvey Pean? I haven't read a book, and I don't think. But this is a great little book.
Starting point is 00:43:40 He's a golf savant. I read a book in grade five about a dog that refused to die. That was a lot, I think, the last book I ever read. Grade five. Grade five? Wow. So how can I get a book in your hands that you'll read? I don't have time
Starting point is 00:43:58 You have a lot of time The biggest lie of the mall I know what you do all day Dude I don't have I don't have time You have a lot of time You have a lot of time I need to get a book in your hands How about an audio book?
Starting point is 00:44:13 Let's get a book Would you listen to a book? I don't know man What if Andy did a little audio book Of Andy Petrillo's new book She's got one There you got one of my close Beautiful colleague
Starting point is 00:44:24 I'm not reading his but I'm not going to act like I'm going to read Andy's either. But I recommend buying the board. So you recommend Andy and Duffy's book. I just, I'm not a reader, man. I don't, I just, I drift away and I forgot the chapter I read. I hear you. I got, it's a commitment.
Starting point is 00:44:39 I'm a magazine guy. You saw that. When I hit the airports, man, I love a good magazine. Books are a different story. Like, I'm not reading like a fictional book. I just, I'm with you there. I'm not reading a 350 page book where you got to commit. I'm not doing that.
Starting point is 00:44:52 The second chapter, you're like, when is this? when does this crap end i'm not doing it i'll read a biography the last book i read it was like a really long one was keith richard's biography that was brilliant that's a book crazy book i strongly suggest you get in on that but it's like a it's long it's a long long book but awesome long life long life been around still kicking oh yeah like that's one of the got to be what's that paying on fandole that keith like if i told you in 1960s that this guy is still kicking in 2025. That must have been paying plus a million.
Starting point is 00:45:32 What a parlay that would have been. Without a doubt. For him and for him and Jagger to be still kicking and still playing and still touring. Yeah. Still going, man. It's great. Like Charlie Watts passed away. I think Bill Wyman passed away, I believe so.
Starting point is 00:45:46 And he left the ban a long time ago. But Ronnie Wood, I don't want to get into this. This is when it gets dangerous. That's when it gets dangerous. That's not kill anyone. All right, we got to get Johnny. I'll bet you Johnny reads books. I guarantee you he doesn't have time.
Starting point is 00:46:00 You don't think he's got time? No. Oh, Johnny's definitely a reader. He's, yeah, he's an educated guy. Oh, yeah, he's right up on the latest. I'll bet she's reading. Bestseller list. All right, Johnny coming up, confirm it, deny coming up.
Starting point is 00:46:11 Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and on TSN4. You've been listening to Overdrive, powered by Fanduel.
