We're tracking Canada, Switzerland, Mike Johnson later in the hour.
Starting point is 00:00:21 Mike Medano coming up, Best Butts, later this hour as well. I can't wait to ask Modo about the Swiss team heading over to Now, stop it. You can't sewer someone, though, and just phrase it in a way that makes it sound. First question for Modo, I'm going to say, Modo, what do you think of that Swiss team playing against the Vancouver Canucks? Who do you think would win? And we'll just wait for him to answer. No, I think you should ask Johnny.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Because Johnny under, Mike Modano works for the Minnesota wild. The last thing he wants to do is start taking a shot. Jamie, it's just hockey guys talking hockey. That's all we're doing. How do you know he's even watched Switzerland? I would rather that you asked him about getting dropped on the stretcher. Every time he comes on, we need to ask him about that. You guys ask him about that.
Starting point is 00:01:08 I'm not asking him that. It's an all-time great clip. Who is that? Sam Rosen. Sam Rosen. Oh, my God. I can't believe I just saw that. That was a live in-game clip that they cut to him getting put in an ambulance,
Starting point is 00:01:23 and the ambulance driver rolled the stretcher, and he fell off. Before he got up to the van. They just dropped them. Like, that is still, Mike Madano was one of the greatest players who ever played. That's a poll question. What do you remember about Mike Madano? And for me, it's him scoring ridiculous goals on me because he was that good.
Starting point is 00:01:45 I still think about the stretcher drop. Stretcher would be high on my list. And that's a first overall pick, Cup winner, one of the coolest players in league history. Yes. Jersey would fly. The jersey flap on Modo was in. Insanel world.
Starting point is 00:02:01 I don't think anyone's topped it since. No. I think I've told you guys this. I was playing for the Minnesota Wild. He was the left shot, came across on the left side, flying, cut across the middle, and took a backhand slap shot. Shelf. Backhand slap shot, like Reg.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Dunlop, put it underneath the bar, and West Walls skated by and said, what the hell was that? Here it is. Here's a stretcher. Oh, no. Oh, my gosh. Jesus. Keep in mind how we.
Starting point is 00:02:30 He arrived on the stretcher. Wasn't that Messier? One of the worst elbows of all the time. That was Mess that did that? I think it was at the garden. We do not need to like revisit that for him. The call is what makes it amazing though. Like what is crazy is that they had media access to that.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Like in the modern world, the NHL would never allow that. Like your partners, you can't be down below, you know, like, remember a game one last year against Florida. Stollars left on a on a. Stretcher, no one's seen video of it. You just take it after the game. It came out. Actually, I think he left on a stretcher. There's a camera guy, TMZing that.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Like, yeah, I got him. Medano, he's going down the shoot, right? Just see the eyes open. Oh, oh, look at that. Oh, my goodness. It's one of the great calls ever because it's so raw. Play that again. That is outrageous, hearing that.
Starting point is 00:03:29 It is. being taken in an ambulance. He is conscious. See the eyes open. Oh, oh, look at that. Oh, my goodness. Oh, Jesus. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:03:42 It's like, I can't believe we just saw that. He actually, when he says that. Yeah, it's got to be one of the most shocking calls in Sam Rosen's career. Yes. Because of all the things that you might see on an ice surface playing hockey, nothing's really going to shock you. That would be stunning. There's no preparation for that when you're broadcasting.
Starting point is 00:04:04 So Mike Madano in a few moments here. I want to get into this NBA story where they're trying to all of a sudden crack down on, you know, tanking. Load management? Yeah, tanking. All of a sudden, you know, like what changed? Because teams have been tanking. Like the Philadelphia 76ers had the process for years where their literal marketing campaign was, we are going to be the worst team in the league and try to draft first overall every single year for like three or four years.
Starting point is 00:04:34 That was their plan. Like that was it. And to my knowledge, they never got fine, nothing. And now Utah and this Ryan Smith who's not happy, 500 grand he got hit. And now all of a sudden Adam Silver has got this big issue. And I do think it's a problem in the NBA. But everyone's doing it. And everyone has been doing it.
Starting point is 00:04:53 How did you pick Ryan Smith out of everyone to hammer him? Exactly. And Indiana got it too. But the Pacers, they're in trouble. Last year they were in the NBA final. We know what happened. Halliburton's been done. So they got clipped for like $200,000.
Starting point is 00:05:07 But of all the teams, Brooklyn did it forever. They're still doing it. Teams tank. The Raptors did it last year. A lot down the stretch. So, hey, does it detail what, like, the fine is saying you're trying to lose on purpose? Well, the wording of it, they worded it as like the integrity of the sport. and, you know, competitive nature of the sport.
Starting point is 00:05:29 It's a bunch of minutia and garbage. Effectively, it's we know you're trying to lose and we're going to hit you. Now, I do wonder, you know, how much they've been talking about this behind the scenes to the owners. Like, you've got to stop it. There's a lot. There's a lot of heat on the NBA. Right. More so over the last 12 months than I can recall in a long time.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Where it's like the product stinks, the All-Star Games this weekend, no one cares. You know, players aren't playing, load management, teams are tanking. but I just I find it weird that you're starting with these teams and there's other there's going be other teams down the stretch you better keep going you better keep going and there's more on this we'll get to later in the hour about them possibly doing a tournament of the teams that missed the playoffs bring Modo in and we'll stuff you in a garbage can't
Starting point is 00:06:13 oh don't ask the question I'm going to ask them first off it's so unfair to do this because you're going to sue them because I'm not suering him all right here he is one of the all-time greats Mike Medano here on Overdorf How you doing, Mike? I'm good. Afternoon, fellas.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Good catching up. Great catching up. Go ahead. Modo, I got a question for you. Just I just want your honest opinion of it. Right now at the Olympics, the Swiss team that's assembled right now, if they played the Vancouver Canucks 10 times, let's say right after the Olympics, how many times do you think they'd beat the Canucks?
Starting point is 00:06:49 Maybe seven? Oh, my God. No way. I love the way these people are. You've got to give him some context. There's no context. We and Jamie McLennan, Modo, us three are former, no, we're not. We're not.
Starting point is 00:07:06 We think that Vancouver would beat them nine out of ten times because it's the National Hockey League. Do you think that's crazy talk? I don't think it's crazy talk, but I don't know. I've always thought the Swiss play a real good team game, but that's the only thing that saves them and keeps these games close. They don't really have anybody to break open any games, but they always seem to play real tight defensively and play good and just kind of wear you down and hope you make a mistake. And, you know, so I don't know if Vancouver has that type of patience in their game anymore.
Starting point is 00:07:40 That's exactly right. That's exactly right. This is a tough show for me. My argument was just getting stuffed in lockers. My argument was that a lot of those Swiss players are an NHL player. So eventually, you know, it would wear down. the NHL players would shine through. But you make a good point about the team play,
Starting point is 00:07:58 but I still hold tight that I believe the NHL is the best league in the world, and those players have for them on the Swiss, we don't even know who they are. But they're going to try hard. Vancouver stinks and they've quit. But they're NHL players, though. That's the difference. Like most of Vancouver players, if they were Swiss, they'd be on that team.
Starting point is 00:08:16 That's my point. Well, the big argument someone brought up is like, well, everybody says well it's great to see the Olympics or whatever it's best on best and everyone's like well the NHL is sort of best on best you don't really have the best of you know Italy or Switzerland or whatever Germany you know Denmark whatever you know the NHL is you know you got the best players you know practically in the world Russia wherever in the you know the National Hockey League so um the best on best thing is kind of you know you could argue that if you get to the gold medal game with USA Canada, that could be, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:59 obviously some of the best players in the game, period. That would be. That would be a best on best. These guys would have Canada just squeaking past Vancouver. No, no, no. No, no. Sorry about this guy, Mowed. He's a joke.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Squeaking past, lank it in and double overtime. What do you make of the Olympics so far, Mike, and how exciting it is. for, you know, everybody to be back to it. And, you know, what do you expect, you know, not only out of just you mentioned Team Canada, but Team USA and what the team they put together. Yeah, I mean, it's, you know, it's really, you know, not a great job for Billy Garen or Doug Armstrong because you could build a couple teams out of the amount of talent that's in the game nowadays, especially in the U.S., where it's kind of really, you know, the increase of talent
Starting point is 00:09:50 and the players that they've got and the skill level that has the pool they got to pull from is pretty impressive in both countries obviously so it's it's been you know you've kind of been waiting for this i mean the four nations was kind of a precursor hoping to have a little bit better you know similar hockey coming into the olympics but you know i think it's something always everyone's always excited for this time when the olympics come around and just you know you're supporting your country and playing for some honor and some um you know, some credibility there. So it's always a fun thing to be a part of and to watch.
Starting point is 00:10:26 And then, you know, obviously we're glued to it just to watch the other, the other sports. And throughout the night, we're glued to the TV. And, you know, when it was fun playing with it, when you're playing in them, it was even equally fun just to go to the, to the other venues and watch the other sports. And, you know, we're around when the women's USA hockey team really got going in 98. So we're around them and watching them.
Starting point is 00:10:49 And, you know, so that part of it being in the Olympic Village was, you know, quite the experience of being part of the whole festivities and the atmosphere of the Olympics. So I love it. I know you know the value of, you know, the guys getting together and having chemistry and team camaraderie and all that motto. But in a short tournament, like, what are you, like, is it as simple as you really need your goaltender to make some big saves? Obviously, you've got to have key guys contributing. but if you don't have a goaltender that's going to make the regular stops and a few special ones, you probably don't have much of a chance, do you? Yeah, I don't think so, and I think you got a couple guys there, Hellebeck, Bennington,
Starting point is 00:11:31 who, you know, have had, you know, not years up to their standards that they hope to have, so, you know, there's an opportunity for them to really kind of come in here and, you know, kind of refine their game, so to speak, and kind of, you know, lift Canada or U.S. into another level. So, you know, they got some pressure on them, but, you know, they've had it in the past and they've performed well. But, yeah, it's a tough position to kind of go into. So, you know, we thought that about Bennington last year,
Starting point is 00:12:03 and he kind of stole the show at the Four Nations. He was phenomenal and great, but Helibuck, he's a competitor, and he would know one another other to get another shot at Canada for sure. With Mike Medano Hall of Famer Cup winner Olympian. You know, we discuss legacies of players all the time on this show. And obviously we've got Matthews in our backyard. And we've talked to a lot. We've talked more about Austin Matthews than any other player in the last decade, you know,
Starting point is 00:12:31 as being a leaf and the captain of the Leafs and the Face of the Leafs. And now he's the captain of the American team. How do you look at his game? You were a first overall pick. You know, you were a phenom. You obviously had a remarkable career. you're up there really high in the rankings all-time, great American. How do you look at his game and what do you think is still left for him to accomplish?
Starting point is 00:12:53 What's reasonable for him to accomplish as a player? Well, I don't wish that environment and that scrutiny up in Toronto on anybody. I think you're a little bit under the microscope, especially a very highly talented kid as often is, the number one pick kind of coming in there to kind of, you know, you look to kind of resurrect the organization and kind of put them back on a trajectory to kind of, you know, have some success in the playoffs and maybe make a run here or there. And then, you know, he put up some great numbers, phenomenal, you know, some scoring rate that he's been going on. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:30 I think it's just a matter of trying to find some, you know, some secondhand scoring around him, some depth, you know, obviously some defensemen that can kind of, you know, it's a lot. luxury to have Quinn Hughes for Kappersov and McCar, feeding McKinnon coming up the ice. I think it would be nice for him to have someone that could kind of free him up, keep his skating, and kind of open that game up for him offensively. So, you know, it's hard to say. I think the, you know, you can say the jury's still out on him, but, you know, productively, he's been phenomenal. I think it's just a matter of, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:07 you start getting graded on playoffs and how deep you go and how many you win. you know so that's a that's a tough measuring stick in in Toronto for him but you know if it ever did flip the other way I mean there's probably no no better place in the world to play when you're having some success in a couple runs in the finals and some final fours there would be a phenomenal environment there in Toronto but I think he still has you know obviously some ton of upside and you know he's he's got some pressure but you know like I said He just needs a little bit of some love around him to kind of make it easy for him. For sure.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Yeah, I mean, he's right in the line of things over there. I mean, the captain of the team. And, you know, put us in that room. You've been in it, you know, multiple times, obviously. Multiple times you've been an Olympian. Everyone in there is a vet. A lot of guys are captains, you know, assistant captains. How does the room kind of work at the Olympics?
Starting point is 00:15:08 like not the village, not back of the hotel, but specifically, you know, around the rink in the dressing room, how does the pecking order generally play out over the course of two weeks? You know, I think that was really kind of something unique that we had. We never really had some type of, you know, pecking order. Maybe there was quietly among us. I always thought, you know, Chelly owes was kind of the ringleader per se to kind of speak. some things to us when we needed to. But everybody, you know, everybody, respectively is their captain from wherever they come from.
Starting point is 00:15:46 So you have, you know, 20 guys who wear the A or the C and, you know, they know what it takes to be, you know, maybe lead by example or verbally be a guy that, you know, expects a lot of guys out of a lot of guys. But, you know, I go back to our days, you know, you know, obviously Holly and Chellios and Brian Leach, Phil Housley, I mean, Palafontaine and, you know, obviously the Kutche. Chuck, Keith and Billy and, you know, Dougie Wade and, you know, those guys that all played an important role on their team back home. And I think that's really what kind of gave us a little spark in the World Cup in 96. And leading up to that Olympic run was, you know, just everybody was kind of checking what
Starting point is 00:16:26 they did at home at the door. And we just kind of came together. And, you know, we had such a fun time in 96 in the World Cup leading up to it. We had all summer to kind of prepare and be healthy and get ready for that tournament. which was just an amazing tournament. I've never seen such brutal hockey back then since then. So it was prison rules out there, but nonetheless, a lot of fun. But yeah, it's just an honor to be in those rooms and, you know,
Starting point is 00:16:57 just kind of see how guys go about their day-to-day preparation. And being around some of the best players in your country was quite a thrill for us. Mike, you mentioned Billy Garon. I mean, you know, you're working with him with the Wild, you know, their special advisor. How good is this Wild team? And, I mean, you know, Billy Garron obviously swinging for the fences bringing in Quinn Hughes. You know, a lot of focus has been, you know, on the teams like the Colorado Avalanche, you know,
Starting point is 00:17:26 that have been that good. You look at it. But this Minnesota Wild team, maybe talk about them and, you know, how the expectations have maybe changed a little bit after the big trade. Yeah, I really had And I think leading up to even Halloween We're kind of looking at each other like, you know What should we be doing on here to kind of change things up And maybe change your chemistry or some personnel and whatever
Starting point is 00:17:49 Because it wasn't the best start that we had Compared to the year before where we came out of the gates And we were like one of the top two teams all the way up Until probably say Christmas And then it just kind of faded off But you know since Since mid-November These guys have been on the tear
Starting point is 00:18:04 and then you add Quinn. I mean, I've never watched them as much as I have, obviously, here, but boy, he just, I mean, he just adds a dynamic that not too many guys have a luxury to play with. I mean, I was, I felt I had one with Zubov in Dallas, but, you know, the way this guy controls the play and makes the game easy, I think he's kind of transcended our team and just took him to another level. So that was a phenomenal move by Billy, one that is one for the record. book for this organization that kind of
Starting point is 00:18:36 set the tone and you know the guys have played more exciting they played more loose they've defended well obviously both goalies have been playing great and you know so but you know Quinn's able to just control the pace and the poise and you know his ability to make something out of nothing
Starting point is 00:18:52 is really really fun to watch so you know the tough part is you're in a you're in a tough division and someone's got to go out in the first round which I've always been a strong advocate kid of going back to the old one through eight kind of system. So it gives those top teams a little bit of a cush maybe going in that first round where you think you're going to get a light opponent in the first round.
Starting point is 00:19:17 But, you know, we thought that in Dallas. Well, we always got Edmonton and it was a brutal first round. But it got you ready for the long haul. But, you know, it's a tough matchup now when you've got to go through Dallas or Colorado in that first couple rounds. Definitely. Yeah. And that's exactly what's coming.
Starting point is 00:19:32 I think we all know where we're going to be in a couple of months. months. He is a Hall of Famer Cup winner Olympian Mike Madano. Great catching up with you, Mike. Really appreciate you doing this, and we'll do it again down the road. Anytime, guys. Take it easy. Good talking about you. There is, Mike Medano. Well, where to things stand now? Where are we here? He misunderstood the question. Honestly, this guy should go and coach the Swiss, this guy. I will. You know who will be my special assistant? Modo. Mike Madano. Yeah, and Julie Stewart Binks is your analytics.
Starting point is 00:20:04 consult. I don't think they understood the question. You were leading the question. You were bantering. Let me ask Mike Johnson the question, and then I think Johnny will be able to. Although it's kind of a ridiculous. When Johnny comes up to. It's a stupid hypothetical.
Starting point is 00:20:19 No, no. Jamie, I'll give you the next opportunity to prove our case, and you just frame it however you want to M.J. And we'll see what he says. I just, I feel like you're leading the witness. And what they're doing is they're a guest on your show, and they want you to be like, Okay, in your mind, yeah, I guess, you know, Swiss is going to win a bunch of games. But really, they're probably going to go, if we phrase it properly to Johnny, he'd be like, yeah, Vancouver will beat them nine out of ten times because they play in the NHL. They don't play in Lujano.
Starting point is 00:20:47 Well, I think that's true. I think they, the guests think you think Switzerland would win that times. Like, Julie Stewart Bix was like, you put me on this spot here. But, okay, I guess. You know, how do you even calculate something like that? And I don't want to be this. Like, I've seen it in the background, like, I don't. don't want to be disrespect.
Starting point is 00:21:05 Roman Yose is on that team. He's an unbelievable. There was a time where he was a top five player in the world. He's had the illness and he's come back from that. He's a hell of a player. Is he a Hall of Famer for you? Yes, he is for me. You talk about winning, though, Brian.
Starting point is 00:21:20 I don't know. That's the thing. Roman Yose is not going to be able to hoist a cup. No. But as it is right now. I mean, maybe Nashville makes a run here. They were making a run. You know, with the standings there.
Starting point is 00:21:31 Were they not making their close to the playoffs? They're at 59. points. They're four points back of a playoff spot. So they might make a run. But point being is, I think Yosi's a hell of a player,
Starting point is 00:21:43 like a hell of a player. I didn't want to be disrespectful to it. But I just, my point being is I get fired up with people are like, ah, the best H.L team can beat an NHL team. I'm like, well, that's not, it's not the case.
Starting point is 00:21:55 I think what I'm, I'm trying to drive home is like, the intensity of the Olympics. Like, these guys, are playing like this is the game of their lives they're playing Canada yeah and that's what I'm like Vancouver if it's Vancouver now they're like oh the U-Hauls
Starting point is 00:22:12 are packed where are we going on April 15th yeah okay let's go out and play where Switzerland is like we're putting our lives on the line because the whole country's watching it's an intensity thing that they would bring and that I think you're downplaying he makes a great point saying they play very tight very fast
Starting point is 00:22:28 and they make it tough on you 5-1 Canada Swiss style like I don't care about Switzerland. Oh, sorry, what was the score again? Five one, Canada. Yeah, McKinnon just scored, but McDavid made the play happen. It's McDavid, McInnan, Sid, Celebrini.
Starting point is 00:22:44 Like, they're putting on a clinic over there. All right, we're in a good place. Canada's in a good place. I think they'll beat France on Sunday, and then we get the party started, right? We'll see what happens. That's where I'm excited for us next week. This week, you kind of feel like. You knew what they're going three and O.
Starting point is 00:23:00 You always use the word formality. Well, in this situation, those games, are a formality for me. 100%. Next week is when my anxiety will get higher. Okay, so they're playing these three games, and then after that it's elimination? Yeah. Then you're into the quarters and then the semis and all of that.
Starting point is 00:23:18 But next week is for all the marbles, all the money. This week is like a, you know, hey, tune up and, you know, what works or whatever. It's like the world juniors every year. Same thing. Group stage is fun, you know, rack up some points, go crush your team or two, and then you get into the real stuff and it's time to play. Mellon Friday brought to you by Boston Pizza. Canada's favorite sports bar.
Starting point is 00:23:41 I enjoy a $15 lunch at BP where you get an entree of a side and a drink and you get it all in 20 minutes or less. A fast lunch doesn't have to be fast food. See you for a $15 fast lunch at your local Boston pizza. All right. Mike Johnson later in the hour. Best bets later in the hour. The end of an era.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Chris Paul, no longer a raptor and no longer play. The end of the Chris Paul era, unfortunately, for the Raptors. NBA into the All-Star weekend. More on what's going on with tanking and tank gate and what the NFL possibly has in store to open their season next year. We'll tell you about that, too. Overdraft continues. TSN 1050 and on the TSNF.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Mail it on Friday, brought you by Boston Pizza. Canada's favorite sports bar. Enjoy a $15 lunch of beep here you get an entree, a side and a drink, and you get it all in 20 minutes or less. A fast lunch doesn't have to be fast food. See you for a $15. lunch of your local Boston pizza. Mike Johnson a little bit later in the hour.
Starting point is 00:24:37 As we said, the end of the Chris Paul era, he was waived officially today and then decided, I'm retiring, I'm done. So, you know, we could get into the alumni jacket conversation. I don't think it counts because he never stepped foot in Toronto ever played here. No. But technically was a raptor. I remember watching that guy when I was playing for the hurricanes and he was at Wake Forrest
Starting point is 00:25:02 Unreal. Oh, dude, he was a stud, man. Like, he was the talk of the town, like Chris Paul, the point guard for Wake Forest. He was sick, man. He took them deep in that tournament, too. I don't think they won it, but Final Four for sure. I don't even know if they got to the Final Four, but they might have went on a bit of run. Okay.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Well, we can look that up. Yeah, he's... Why not? He's done. He was, what, 40 years old, isn't it? Yeah, he's not a young man. He was never going to play again. Like when the Clippers sent him home, it was curtains.
Starting point is 00:25:36 It was over. Yeah, that's it. How much money would that guy have made? I can't even imagine a lot. I guess. I bet you're 170. Oh, way more than that. Way more than 170 million?
Starting point is 00:25:48 300 plus. Three to four. Between three and four. I mean, like the big deals are happening now, and he missed out on like the monster $55 million a year. He was getting paid 20, like, $1 million. men 20 per year men he had a 15 year run where he was made i think he was making 20 so that yes yeah 250 plus got to yeah well i'll find a career earnings 400 400 400 4 million wow 400 400 400 million and you 404 and you were a raptor at one point what did i say 170 i was way
Starting point is 00:26:27 way up 400 million like that is just absurd of money career earnings with eight teams 20 years though 20 years it's a long career i had a good long career great career great career like a hall of fame or an all-time great player great point card great great point card but that's why when wemby came into the league and it's all going to come down to health you know like if you're going to street close it eventually the money train is going to come to an end but there were projections and I think they're likely to be accurate if he stays healthy, he'll be the first, he'll make a billion dollars playing in the NBA.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Like he'll sign a deal, his next one will be max at, you know, five years, $500 million, you know, whatever it is. It just keeps going up and up and up. And he'll do that a couple times. Like a billion dollars in like 10 years he'll make. Because I think the guy, like you look that up, JP too. I want to say that highest paid players like pushing 60, isn't it? Yeah, oh, for sure.
Starting point is 00:27:34 It's over 60 now. Like, Jalen Brown signed that deal for $300 million. That was a five-year deal. That would have been 60-something. Yeah. I feel like if you can max out, if you're first team all NBA, you win awards, all that kind of stuff. Like you can sign deals now that are 70, 75 million a year. I'm looking at Anthony Davis has put $364 million in his pocket.
Starting point is 00:27:56 All day. All day. For fun. Yeah. But that's what it says. Career earnings right now through 2025, 364, and he's 32 years old. He played on four different teams. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:09 And he's, you know, he's got more teams to give. He's got a couple of years left on his deal. He's got 58 million next year and 62 million the following year. So he's going to be, that's another, that's another $150 million. $120 million right there on top of $360. All day. for street clothes in Washington. It's $500 million right there.
Starting point is 00:28:29 He's a wizard now. Yeah, it's crazy. So I got to take issue with Doogie here, unfortunately, because I love Doogie. Doogie is doing a phenomenal job. Yeah. We got into the Sidney Crosby signature moment conversation. No, let me guess. I'm crushing you on the poll.
Starting point is 00:28:48 Well, the wording of it, Doogie posted it. What is Sidney Crosby's greatest accomplishment in his career? No issue. No issue. No issue with the wording. No, it's signature moment, man. JP, get on the air here. What is leading the poll if you could kindly update me, JP?
Starting point is 00:29:09 Winning three Stanley Cubs is leading the poll at 61.4%. But, thank you, JP. Again, I'll throw a flag on that because the wording is involved. No, it isn't, dude. It isn't, dude. And you're going to get crushed by Mike Johnson in about five minutes. Okay. Well, yeah, Johnny's going to join us.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Canada winning 5-1. 5-1. Fiala looks like Kevin Fiala, I think, is getting stretchered off. You're kidding me. We speak right now. Uh-oh. Well, he's a Swiss player, right? Yeah, but he's also, you know, L.A. King, like you're sitting there.
Starting point is 00:29:40 What happened? Tommy Wilson trucked him? Tommy Wilson might be involved. I just rewound it quickly while we were talking. Man. I don't, and it didn't look like, it looked harmless. I don't know. I'm trying to look at the replay here, but it's not good.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Please tell me. Tommy Wilson's not getting suspended. No, I don't. Again, I didn't see the hit. They pan to it after, but it looks like he twisted his ankle or hurt his knee or something. Like, he's laying there and not getting up. Well, I mean, listen, the Canadian team is, they're out for blood, man. Like, they have a very clear mandate. And this is where the American team, it's going to be incredible theater if they play.
Starting point is 00:30:20 Like, we had Mike Medano on, and he said that 96 World Cup was just insane. because there was NHL rules. There were fights. Two, those are prison rules, man. Prison rules. You remember how filthy rot in that tournament? Gross.
Starting point is 00:30:33 Guys were like two-handed each other on the back, like on the bare back. Yeah. It was, that was a great, like, I love the, like prison rules says it all,
Starting point is 00:30:45 right? Like, that's ridiculous. Like, it's kind of an awful comment, but it's so true. Like, it just,
Starting point is 00:30:51 it's not good. But I remember that. It was. It was insane back then. And the Americans won. I think Mike Richter was in net played great. He was. But, you know, this Canadian team, and these uniforms are so good, man.
Starting point is 00:31:07 They're so sharp. I love them. I love them. I love them. I love the red one. I said I was not carving them. I liked them right off the ball. I'll have to get some tape on that.
Starting point is 00:31:17 Go review the tape. I will. I was pretty sure you were like, I don't know why they have to screw with a good uniform. No. That was Jonas. Erroneous. I was a fan immediately.
Starting point is 00:31:29 I'll tell you the one jersey. The one jersey that should have never been screwed with ever for Canadian hockey is the Canada Cup one with the red and the half the Canadian thing. That is the most gorgeous. The most beautiful picture in the world is that white jersey with the red and like Wayne Gretzky in that jersey. Like with the blue under shirt and the Jofa and the like. amazing. That was the best.
Starting point is 00:31:56 The best. I think they wore that in 87, 81, like 76. 91? Yeah, I think that was just the standard. Yeah. You know, they obviously another company must have, I don't know, if it was Nike or Bauer or whatever, someone bought the rights and they had to change it.
Starting point is 00:32:11 They changed it for every tournament because you've got to sell new ones. Yeah. It's just a, but it's a marketing play. Yes, I'll tell you what, those hats and jerseys look sharp. They're good. We got one for my son. He loved it. Yeah, they look good.
Starting point is 00:32:25 There it is. That's the lineage right there. That one of the top left is unreal, too, man. You like the top left? I like that top left, too. That's a classic. That's 72, I think. No.
Starting point is 00:32:35 Yeah, that looks like that's Paul Henderson. That's Anderson. The Canada one there, yeah, right where that mouse is Joseph. Yeah, that one's great. Gorgeous. I agree. I agree. Outstanding.
Starting point is 00:32:46 I saw the hit. It didn't look egregious. It looks like Wilson tried to hit him, and he spun off, and they got tied up and it looked like his unfortunately for Tom Wilson Jamesy whenever I know but people are going to just want to I just hope Fiala's okay he looked to be
Starting point is 00:33:02 I mean it looked like he twisted his knee or did something bad to his left leg I know they pulled out a stretcher there looked like it was an apple cart there's two giant tires you'll have to see it it's ridiculous they're wheeling him off in an apple cart all the hurt feelings crowd are going to be like
Starting point is 00:33:18 that's why Tom Wilson Shud's no business being over there He's outrageous. I don't think he's tried to spin off the hit and they got tied out. He's going to finish his hit. Get out of the way. If you don't like it, then go hand the puck over and go stand in the corner. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:33:31 Like Canada's, they're, like, by all accounts, I've seen it a little bit here, like Sam Bennett's out there just trying to hit people. Like, he did a little drive-by of the goal yesterday, too. Like, Dostel just got out of the way. Just a little how is she doing routine. All right. Mike Johnson, who's over there calling a game, he'll give us a full breakdown. We'll get to our best bets as well.
Starting point is 00:33:52 Powered by Fandul Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and on YouTube live. Mail it in Friday is brought to you by Boston Pizza, Canada's favorite sports bar. Starting point is 00:34:16 Make your picks and assemble. Same game parlay in seconds on the Fandual Sportsbook app. It's looking at the NBA All-Star game. weekend and I'm going to bet the world team to win this plus 155 it's the first time they're doing it they're trying to figure this out Americans versus the world darko I think steps in and has himself a beautiful beautiful coaching performance and I'm on the world and a sneaky little bet on Jamal Murray in the three-point contest getting big plus money he's a he's a hot cold shooter I think if he gets
Starting point is 00:34:46 hot I'll sprinkle some money on the Canadian to show up in the three point today's Best Betts, powered by Fandau. Same game parlors around the sports world, available on the Fandallis Sportsbook. Yeah, please play responsibly. 19 plus physically located in Ontario. All right, Mike Johnson, hopefully in a few moments. There's a bit of a controversy going on over there with the curling. I don't know if you guys are seeing this online.
Starting point is 00:35:08 Oh, what do you got? The men's team, men, it's Canada versus Sweden. And I think the Swedes are accusing one of the curlers of, like, cheating or doing something. I know. They almost got in a tilt. Like a fist fight. Going at it. Like the Canadian guy told the other one to F off in the end.
Starting point is 00:35:25 Like it's, they're getting testy, man, on those. One guy was yelling. One guy was yelling. I'm going to show you the video after. Yeah. Wow. Well, I was. They'll hammer beers. Apparently curlers like they hammer drinks after their games.
Starting point is 00:35:41 I had lunch with Nick Sulski today, the head of the curling group, which is they are releasing a league. Like, it's that, they part. Party. That's all they do, the curlers. Party. If you look at it, it's crazy. I didn't realize that. Like, I grew up out west. All my buddies are curling.
Starting point is 00:35:58 Brian Moodrick's a huge voice in curling and all that. Boos and curl. Maybe we set up an overdrive show at the Scotty's. Oh, I'm telling you, like the curling crew, they are. Let's get involved. I love it. If we get involved in curling, I'm telling you, it is a different world. I'm just learning it.
Starting point is 00:36:18 But, like, I've never played, and I never would. I feel like my hamstrings would be, my back would go, it'd be no good. Put us at the beer tent at the Scotty's. We could do a show right in, you name it. I love it. Wherever the Scotty is and put us in the beer tent and let us go nuts. It's always rowdy. It's always incredibly supported, right?
Starting point is 00:36:37 It's big out west, but it's big everywhere, man. It is. There's a lot of great curlers that have come out of Ontario, Eastern Canada, Atlantic Canada. I'll tell you what, there's new curling league. There's professional, there's professional, football players that have invested at it. Jared Allen, the former quarterback, is like one of the, they've got a league
Starting point is 00:36:57 in Nashville. I didn't realize that. Really? There's the best curler to come out of Ontario. Russell Howard. Nah, is it? Okay, who is it? Rachel Holman. This is my buddy, Wayne Madaugh. Okay, I like Wainty. Wayne Madaugh is a great, he can curl
Starting point is 00:37:12 a rock. Dude, Wayne Madaugh is the Wayne Gretzky of curling. Is he? Yeah, he's like this guy's an incredible athlete golf curling but he's known as the wayne gretsky of curling just look it up just look it up the rock league i'm a russ howard guy i like wayne too but i'll take wayne madaw let's get way maddaugh and russ howard to have a match and i'll take wayne maddaugh for the pride of midland ontario russ russ hour that's where wayne maddaw's from midland ontario two of them probably came up like just battling it out man like fetter and adal like the two of them
Starting point is 00:37:46 probably just how many times if they battled it out? Oh, my guy's Nadal. Madda is Nadal. Okay, Federer's Howard. I didn't know who the best curler was. You know, we could, Vic Router would know, and so would Brian Udron. Those guys would like.
Starting point is 00:38:01 Dude, Vic would absolutely. Let's get Monday on tomorrow. Let's see what he has to say. Buddy is talking a little curling? He might. I mean, he's over in Milan. He's counted over there. Tomorrow is Saturday, so we'll probably want to be doing that. We'll have them on on Monday. But this Rock League is starting
Starting point is 00:38:16 in April, I'm telling you, it's going to kill it. And it's so exciting. I'm just going to watch as a fan. But I can't wait to see, like, because apparently it's going to be like a party. That's the thing. It's kind of like pickleball, like trying to explode, too, right? There's other areas. There's other parts of the sports world.
Starting point is 00:38:33 There's nothing better. There's nothing better in the world. And there's pickleball fights. Like, guys get into it. Oh, yeah. You see the one on the line where the guys swinging at each other with the racets. You imagine going to a casual pickleball outing and you just get in a tilt? I mean...
Starting point is 00:38:53 Wasn't it Craig Button that showed up with a black guy a couple years ago from pickleball? That's right. I think he fell down and his racket hit him in the head. Yeah, it was ugly too, man. Like, Craig was in bad shape. Yeah, he had a really bad black guy. I had one that got chopped in the head, but his was like really... Right around the same time, too, you guys.
Starting point is 00:39:13 The thing is, like, tennis people hate... hate pickleball people. They do, man. Really? Yeah, because they're taking over a lot of the territory, right? Like growing up, Pickleball's new, man. Obviously, I never played it or heard of it growing up. Right.
Starting point is 00:39:29 I hadn't heard of it until about probably seven, eight years ago. But now you go to a lot of places, you know, especially warm climates. You go down to Florida or something where there'd be six to eight tennis courts and they're taking like four of the tennis courts and making them pickleball courts. so a lot of the territory has been taken over here and I don't know man it's not good
Starting point is 00:39:50 it's not good for pick a ball or tennis anyway good for Canada they win 5-1 I think Johnny's dusting us he's probably overdoing well they just finished the game like I it's not his fault that game because they had to stretch her Fiala off that chewed up probably 10 minutes of real time right that's his window to come on with us
Starting point is 00:40:10 it sucks but that stinks man you got a whole piece of okay because like you said LA needs some man like they're in a fight. Fiala's a hell of a player really good player and you know they've just brought in Panarin there and Fiala would have been a guy that I think would have chemistry
Starting point is 00:40:25 with Panarin that did not look good and I just again as we were coming back on I could hear the panel talking about the game just went dead right after it they just played out the rest of the minutes because I think both teams were kind of like Rattel over let's get out of year when you see
Starting point is 00:40:40 you know an NHL player that you play against and respect go down and again it wasn't malicious there's nothing that's going to come out people will talk that's Tom Wilson Tom Wilson has a reputation but I don't think I didn't see it
Starting point is 00:40:54 only saw the hit once it didn't look malicious it just looked like could have been anyone happened to be Tom Wilson well it just happens I will say I did watch Sidney Crosby's goal and did you see
Starting point is 00:41:06 who got the primary assist well a lot of people say Mitch is flying over there He's sweat in the hair and he's flying. Well, the primary cyst was pretty impressive. Sweat and the hair. I love it. Well, good for him.
Starting point is 00:41:19 Listen, good for him. He's playing great. I hope he plays great. Yeah. We need him. Canada needs them. He's playing with Sidney Crosby. It's got to be the coolest thing he's ever done.
Starting point is 00:41:28 Exactly. But whatever happens, you know, people are going to make up their minds on his. His legacy of Toronto is what it is. It's done now. It's over. It's no changing it. It's over. It's done.
Starting point is 00:41:38 Yeah. So, He can go on and do a bunch of cool stuff, though, Brian, and basically forget Toronto and leave it in the rearview mirror. Yeah. He can win cups in Vegas. He can win the Olympics. He can, you know what I mean? Like, he can put it in his rearview mirror in a hurry in the next six months.
Starting point is 00:41:55 Absolutely. Maybe it comes back at the end of his career and signs a one-day contract. One-day contract. I think Overdrive will be down there celebrating that. Be down there. Possibly. Yeah. I don't know, man.
Starting point is 00:42:08 I mean, in reality, once you're gone, I'm. and he's going to play another at least 10 years in the league, at least. It's like Hyman. Like I always thought, you know, he'll be remembered as a leaf. He's not already. Like he's an oiler. And it's not that he isn't remembered as a leaf in some capacity. It's like Lanny McDonald.
Starting point is 00:42:26 Like, I think of him as a flame. And he was an all-time great leaf, you know, started his career here, him and Sittler. You know, any leaf fan of a certain age, it's like, man, they love Lany McDonald. But he went to Calgary. He was there for a long time. One of a cup. Yeah, 89. Captain a cup.
Starting point is 00:42:42 Like, that changes things, you know, and that's the reality likely with Martyr. If he plays 10 years in Vegas, he'll be known as a golden night. Maybe he just lives there the rest of his life. Yeah. Who knows? Well, you never know. But we got to get into a curling.
Starting point is 00:42:57 Like, somebody just sent us a video of the Super 70s. I think it's hilarious. The curling, the silver broom in 1972, they were curling with cigarettes in their hands. Silver broom. Oh, my God. That is old school. It is. That's a sport.
Starting point is 00:43:12 It's an entertainment sport. Okay. Like that is smoking, drinking. Like, one of the men or the women got a metal over there, right? Like, have to. We need a gold by Monday.
Starting point is 00:43:24 Are we going to have a gold by Monday? I want a curling gold by Monday. What's the Jerry's on a gold by Monday? The way it's going? 20%. Give me an 80%. Somebody's going to come up with one. I'm telling you.
Starting point is 00:43:36 That's hoping. That's not a realistic. No, I'm not, yeah, it's a hope, but I'm hoping that somebody comes up with a gold for Canada. Okay. And then it gets the ball rolling. People get fired up about it. Yeah, I guess I'll say 81%, a little bit higher.
Starting point is 00:43:54 A little bit higher, a little bit more optimistic. Yeah. All right, well, it's been a fun week to have the Olympics going. You know, I mean, obviously it's a weird time of year because the NHL is down and the NBA is into their all-star break. And I don't know what's going on at Pebble, but, the weather there is just so perfect, man. Watching them play yesterday. Dude, I missed that Sam Fran weather.
Starting point is 00:44:16 So brilliant. They're walking around half of them in golf shirts, half them in like a little quarter zip or a hoodie. Sam Burns did an interview after his round in Peter Millar. Again, looking beautiful post-round. And he just said, man, it's so perfect here right now. Like, just the way he described it, he's like, he looked around.
Starting point is 00:44:36 He's like, man, look at this. Look where we are. Like, it's snowing sideways in Collingwood right now. It's still so cold, man. It's so cold still. You can't pull out that outfit you were walking around in San Franway with the shorts and the Tuk and the El Roker outfit. The Roker?
Starting point is 00:44:54 The Roker breakfast? That's a month away, month away. Yeah, month away. But Pabell, I'd say Augusta's number one for viewing and Pabell is number two, I think. In terms of the TV experience, like watching it and just the whole look of it. It's just incredible. That's half the TV experience with Pebble on TV. It's just like looking at the views.
Starting point is 00:45:15 Last thing. What's the date that you guys, the first day that you guys are teaing it? Well, it's at least start two months away. It's at least 60 days away. Yeah. So it's late March, early April? Oh, it's late April. It's end of April.
Starting point is 00:45:31 Unfortunately, it's end of April. All right, I won't bring it up. Especially with a winter like this, if it stays like cold and it's a deep freeze, We're 60 days minimum. Anyway, all right. Well, thanks to Mike Medano. Julie Stewart Binks joining us from Milan. That was really cool to catch up with her.
