Starting point is 00:03:26 I just got to tell you something like that Defensive play that he makes on Crosby where he spins around and gets his backhand on that that is like hockey defense Porn like that's that is completely insane and the back idea slid across Insane like that is top-tier defensive defenseman stuff that not everyone can do. And everyone kept saying it. All the Carolina reporters kept saying it the whole tournament. That guy does that every night, but nobody pays attention to it. Well, him and Faber were probably the best pairing in the tournament.
Starting point is 00:03:59 Faber was a stud too. That pairing was so good good such a lockdown pairing uh... you can pencil that in next year. Dude, last year when we were voting on the awards Michael Russo in Minnesota was very vocal about Brock Faber and he was right man like this guy is unbelievable Connor Bedard had a great year last year very worthy of winning it but you look at this tournament
Starting point is 00:04:23 Bedard's not there and Brock Faber was a beast Like he was awesome. Yeah, really like shut down the best players That's what I don't like about the awards people just get caught up in the sexy name and the sexy name gets it every time Yeah, well exactly. I mean that's Kind of what happened I would say, you know McDavid because you won the game I get it and then McKinnon was the tournament MVP but those are the two best players reigning heart winner you know it worked out well for the NHL and generally speaking that does happen especially with point production rookie of the year but you're
Starting point is 00:04:56 right I mean you you you play the lock or not lock on the American side like on the defense Quinn Hughes is obviously stepping in and playing. I mean, clearly he's going to play. So who are they taking out? McAvoy's a lock, Slavin's a lock, Faber's a lock, Wurenski's a lock. I think Fox- Stop talking about them. They're scaring me again. They're scaring me.
Starting point is 00:05:17 You don't think Fox is a lock? No, I didn't think he had a role. He didn't play well. He didn't. He's been in a kind of a haze all year to be honest with you. He hasn't been Adam Fox. I'm taking Sanderson over him. You're taking Sanderson over him.
Starting point is 00:05:31 I can't see USA doing that. Dude, I'm not far, I'm doing that too. If you want to go over there and everything, just kind of, and I know he's not like an emotional kind of guy and he doesn't freak out, he's not Brady Kachuck, but you can't ho-hum it all the time. There's got to be some kind of dig in in intensity and it's just never there. I get it. He's really slick. He makes plays.
Starting point is 00:05:55 He's patient with the puck and he's got a real calm demeanor about the way he plays a game, but sometimes there's got to be some jam, man, because it's holding him back right now. There's never any jam yeah i'm trying to think of like if he wasn't there and you needed an american right-handed defenseman like seth jones is american uh... nil pionk is american
Starting point is 00:06:16 like there's there's options like that it's not like he's a lot to be there because there's not anyone that can jump over that's a big drop off considering his reputation the year and a half ago two years ago but he wanted norris right here at the the year where all this the divisions were sponsored you're like i was in the discover card division right and it was a bit different i get it was in the bubble and all that but still let me know was a time when he was the guy that the next wave of american defenseman
Starting point is 00:06:43 uh... anyway you know they were on the wrong side of it last night and you know, I'll bet you Bruce Cassidy What a scene for him like going back into Boston Obviously, he's got a long history there and representing his country on the bench John Cooper and you get a win like that in overtime And now you got to get right back at it and your team in Vegas is waiting for you And it's like we got a stretch run here. Here he is, the head coach of the Vegas School Knights, big part of the coaching staff with Team Canada at Four Nations. Here's Bruce Cassidy. Where's your head at right
Starting point is 00:07:19 now? Bruce, do you have any idea where you are in the world or what? Oh, yeah. We just landed in Vegas, so heading home. We were on the road for eight days before, and we went right from Boston to Montreal. That's where we spent the week. So my son's 14. He probably has a mustache now. I get home on it too. Bruce, what did you make of last night? And what did you make of the overall pace of play?
Starting point is 00:07:48 Everybody – and it's tough to compare errors, but everyone was talking about the incredible pace of it and it's the best hockey they've ever seen. What did you just make of the overall hockey itself that you just witnessed throughout the 10 days? It's what happens when elite, talented know, talented players check well, right? There's just no room out there. You barely had time to get your head up, receive a pass, make a play. So when guys did make a play, really appreciate it, right, at such a high rate of speed when
Starting point is 00:08:19 guys are trying to close on them. So that was the first thing you noticed. Just not much room out there. Last night the ice looked a little softer than maybe Montreal and also what was going on so the puck was bouncing a little more so that even added to the difficulties of it. And the physicality and it's funny before the tournament you weren't sure, right? Probably everyone's wondering how hard are they going to play and I think the players knew that this was going to be game on and that's certainly how it was.
Starting point is 00:08:45 It was great. Bruce, what was it like having all these great leaders in one dressing room? You always hear the term lead by example and sometimes with your club team it's a couple, one or two guys that do it. These are all the best of those guys, Crosby, McDavid, McKinnon, all in the same dressing room. What was it like to see that up close and personal? I'll tell you, they're relatively quiet guys in terms of, you know, I've had Brad Marsham,
Starting point is 00:09:12 right? He never stops. He talks the whole time, but a lot of those other guys you've mentioned are quiet and they do, certainly will speak up, but they're more interactive with each other if they're on the same line, talking about face-off plays or power play breakouts, whatever it is. So you learn a little bit about the personality. Even the Tampa guys, they've all won Sorelle points, but even haggled it, but they're quiet as well. So it was a little more quiet of a dressing room.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Our guy, Mark Stone's very quiet than maybe I expected, which is fine, it worked out there they're quite confident that just that's one thing i noticed right away they did more other interacting uh... kind of just going over things with each other uh... in that manner well with that mind when you consider what happened on saturday those three fights in nine seconds you know hago you said quite said that it is is
Starting point is 00:10:02 notoriously quiet like he scares people You know And he's out there fighting. I don't know about Yeah, but like I guess I don't have you ever seen anything like that I don't think anyone ever had like was there an understanding that was coming like what were you thinking with those fights? Well, I was I was shocked myself. So I I don't I think our guys just responded in the moment you might you know As far as I know um, I think our guys just responded in the moment. You might, you know, as far as I know, I mean, Hagel, Kachuk, they Tampa, Florida, right? They've had playoff series. So I don't know if there's something there
Starting point is 00:10:32 a previous history, no idea. And then I think, you know, Brady was kind of looking around and all right, here we go. And then the last one, I think, you know, Miller kind of went to the net. That's the way it's going to, I think, I was just talking and I didn't see it coming and it sure set the tone for the game and, uh, and maybe the whole
Starting point is 00:10:54 tournament after that, right. That this was for real. So, uh, I thought it was great. Um, you know, no one hurt in those, in those, those tilts. So everyone came out of it all right off and went and played hockey after that. It was pretty good hockey. Bruce, 82 game season, you're constantly looking to tinker and get guys going, and you've got
Starting point is 00:11:15 to be hard on some guys, and you've got to look at line combinations. How much did the coaching staff as a group, after every game, chat, or was it just about little things with the amount of talent that was there for Canada? No, no, I think Coop, he was always looking for input on the lines and I think the deep pairs stayed a little more consistent because Taze Makara played together so long and then kinda had every game seemed like one guy was
Starting point is 00:11:41 was in or out so you're just subbing in or out because Kale got sick and the deal got hurt and then mo got sick at the end so but the forward lines there's more discussion on chemistry because let's face it you don't have a lot of time to build it well and you know you talk about the pairs oh sorry Bruce I thought your your phone may have cut out there. No, sorry if it did. I'm in the car. The forward group talked about more. I think it was sometimes to do with right sticks.
Starting point is 00:12:13 They had a lot of right sticks, so someone's going to have to play the left wing that's typically up in the lineup like a Mark Stone. Braden Point gets moved up from center to wing. So there's a little bit of that who fits with who. Mitch ended up on left wing. We saw second half of the game last night with McDavid. So there was a little bit of that we discussed. And Coop has to make that call on the bench and obviously he made a lot of right ones. Did you go into this tournament thinking that things would run a little more smoothly and what I mean by that is you, you have a game where McCarr is sick, so now you
Starting point is 00:12:47 have to make some adjustments. Josh Morrissey doesn't play last night, you're making adjustments. Did you kind of think it would just be, you know, a little more set in stone? And how did you guys handle these obstacles that came your way? Yeah, well, yes, I assumed it would be. And there was even a travel day with the weather. We had to get out early before the after the American the clock came but I got thrown out of wax or get in at 530 in the morning so
Starting point is 00:13:17 there was a little more than I was thought Theodore, fortunately for us in the in the nights, I think it was right away in game one, so you're juggling five defensemen, Kale's not at his best because yeah, there was a lot of that going on for us. We figured we'd have discussions on maybe should, I think Bennett sat out the first game, would he go in the second? Things like that we anticipated, but but no not kind of some curveballs So that's a good job handling it with Bruce Cassidy of team Canada head coach the Vegas Golden Knights
Starting point is 00:13:51 We'll get you out of here with a question We've been kind of collectively wondering and asking like the transition We've wondered about from a player's perspective because it's go time tomorrow night You guys are at home against Vancouver and we're into late Feb. Like the playoffs are right around the corner. So as a coach, you're flying back, you just got home. How do you handle the next 24 hours preparing to get back into NHL action? Yeah, well, I mean, we had our practices this week. John Stevens ran, so the guys should have their legs that are here.
Starting point is 00:14:20 But the tough part is, you know, Jack Ico played a lot of minutes Noah Hanifin, Mark Stone give them a break at some point just as much mentally as anything maybe look at our schedule in the next week I think we're Saturday, Monday, Thursday something so maybe after the Monday game so that's something we have to discuss I think teams that had multiple players like Colorado might have to look at that too but I don't have a great answer for that the something we have to discuss. And then also with roster limitations, right?
Starting point is 00:14:52 You can't just, you know, park four or five guys and ice a lineup with today's salary cap. So that's something else you've got to think about. But at some point they need a break, that's for sure. So when are we going to get it to those players I don't know yet, that's something we have to go through with them and and Do its best for the team but also allow them to sort of step away I think for a little bit so that's how we're gonna handle it absolutely Great catching up with you Bruce whirlwind 24 hours really appreciate you doing this best of luck tomorrow night down the stretch
Starting point is 00:15:23 Okay, thanks for having me fellas. Take care. You got it, Bruce Cassidy of Team Canada. Head coach of the Golden Knights. Interesting answer there that, you know, he's pretty blunt. Like, you know, now they've, they got a pretty, they're in a pretty good spot in the Pacific. Yeah, not every team's like that though. And not every team above the coach probably thinks like that too. There's probably ownership. There's probably a GM that's like, we pay you, you better be ready to play and don't think about asking for any time off. Craig Barube kind of had a laughing answer. He's like, well, who else is going to play?
Starting point is 00:15:54 Yeah, exactly. And what he says about the cap is the best point. You can't just say four guys aren't playing. Like the NHL is not going to allow that. You got to ice a lineup. And like Vegas, again, was stoned. Theodore's banged up and hurt. He had to leave. Is that like rest of the season hurt his hand or whatever that is? It was in like a little bit of a wrist sling or cast. I don't know if it's rest of the season.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I don't know if that's the case either. But Eichel was playing top line minutes effectively. Him and Matthews with the top two centers uh... eight hill was there didn't play but i would you know presume he's probably a hundred percent will probably start tomorrow night kevin lanken and will play for vancouver's got himself a five-year deal
Starting point is 00:16:36 five-year deal with that no trade clause the first two years i believe and then a fifteen team no trade the rest of the way which didn't they just pick that guy up off the scrap heap at the beginning of the season They signed him in September for less than a million dollars because Demko they weren't sure If he was gonna be available and she loves they didn't trust them yet And they were right to not trust them because she loves went in the net early in the year And he couldn't stop the puck and this Lankan in save the season if it wasn't for Lankenen, they would not be anywhere near a playoff spot.
Starting point is 00:17:07 So and you know what? All these other goalies, Blackwood signed. He got his deal. Logan Thompson got his deal. This is market value for what this guy is for them. Well, and he can thank Demko. And that's the amazing thing that Demko is just, they have no faith in him. They're going on a five game road trip, and he's not going on the trip
Starting point is 00:17:27 Yeah, they have no faith. You can't have any faith in the guy that he's gonna play and It's crushing but Kevin Lankening took full opportunity and obviously the Canucks with this action would suggest to me They have no faith that Demko is gonna play well do it Demko gets back and starts playing after this one, which is 15 days from now, and something happens again. I always wonder, when do you get to the point where this is game over? It's like, sorry man, like we, what are we gonna do with you?
Starting point is 00:17:58 What if it's one of those things for Demko where this is just a lost year, and he'll try and play as much as he can, and then he'll hopefully have a good summer and fire back up next year like this year seems like a write-off well i can't wait to see this guy on a lot of what he's going to what's done he's gonna call it all mark out there team sweden team sweden's like you're getting ready to go against the u s right before the
Starting point is 00:18:19 game on that feeling while go ahead and you play it's like that he didn't play for ottawa and then they they've been rolling had to be there at the four nations Yeah, didn't play a game for Ottawa for for three months. Yeah, whatever the hell a lot of games weeks And then he gets thrown in cold because lankan and I believe got pulled right got Gustafson Augustus and got pulled. That's right. Marksman was sir Gustafson got pulled and Augustus and Augustus again pull that's right action was sir Gustafson got pulled and All of a sudden all marks in there and you're like this guy has a plate in six weeks So then he gets a chance and then the last game he's like
Starting point is 00:18:53 I gotta think of Ottawa. I gotta think of the sense here I gotta put team first dude that guy is starting to really drive me nuts If he's been if he's been the best in the winter and a solid competitor and goaltender for the Ottawa Senators, they're not even worried about making the play. I'm convinced of that. If that guy was in the net doing his thing on a nightly basis, he's been ninja dust for two months. They've already been through it with Matt Murray and then with Corpo Salo and they bring
Starting point is 00:19:21 this guy in, they think they've got the right players. Start playing and do your job. Yeah, well, especially without Norris and Pinto like not having those two guys That's a go in there and steal some games cuz you owe it to them Well and look at Brady Kachuck man the way he was playing what you know He's he's got it. He's sitting out there saying biggest game of my life biggest game of his career Imagine that Hayes think about that like if you're pulling the pin like that or whatever the hell he's doing looking at Brady Kachuk with how intense that guy is and how bad he wants to win and play I wouldn't be able to look I don't know How he'd be able to look Brady in the face
Starting point is 00:19:56 Listen man, I I hope I hope they find a way to get in and I hope Kachuk continues to get those opportunities Because he is a throwback man to the first round of the playoffs with Brady Kachuk continues to get those opportunities because he is a throwback man. Dude, first round of the playoffs with Brady Kachuk. You know the way the first round is. It's just like all systems go. Guys are flying through the boards head first, blocking a million shots. He was made for that. And we got to see it in this entire tournament and he did it all. He brought it all to the table, whether it was the fighting, whether it was the hitting,
Starting point is 00:20:24 whether it was hitting the right type of player for Team Canada, making sure you're going after McCarr, making it hard for him, and then scoring big goals. He was built for hockey, and I think going back to Ottawa now, not that it wasn't credible from him before because he's a captain and he's a leader there, but now it's like he saw that You know that's different than what he has seen playing for Ottawa his entire career where it's just like Frustrating night we lose again. We missed the playoffs. We'll try again next year He just got to see what it's like to be around the best to be the best and his profile in the US Blew up over two weeks
Starting point is 00:21:03 and his profile of the u.s. blue up over two weeks it blew up and that's another element like all the way you gotta you gotta get up you gotta get it he's got help was the braves got a big edges show up and say i'll be there come game one he's got a personal top yeah but
Starting point is 00:21:19 you know those could chuck brothers in terms of their profile the last two weeks skyrocketed down the u.s. became the face of american hockey effectively you know it seems like it like that's where people were when they're jumping on board this is amazing this is the two fights was the two of them you know well as much as matthews is is the best american player which i think you know a lot of people would would admit because of the personality That those guys have they kind of become the poster boy for it They're they're like larger than life when it comes to who's representing USA hockey. Yeah, and that's not gonna stop I mean those guys will clearly be a huge part of it next year

Starting point is 00:23:28 hell not shaving my beard i'm not cut my hair right exactly and you're right to lou worked with the yankies and picked it up and said i'm applying it to my teams and it's still applies for the islanders but it doesn't anymore for the yankies uh... which is kind of strange but uh... doesn't anymore for the Yankees, which is kind of strange. But yeah, it's a new era, new era down there in New York. Yeah, it's a good decision by the Yankees. Like, I don't know, you just can look the way,
Starting point is 00:23:54 you look however you want. Like, go out and play hard and it's for the logo on the jersey, you want a beard, have a beard. Like, I just, I thought that's been ridiculous for years. It kind of, yeah, I mean, listen, there's a part of it that is a throwback and it's... Hey, it does look classy. Everyone's got a nice haircut. Everyone's clean shaven, but let's be serious, man.
Starting point is 00:24:13 It's not feasible. It's not necessary. The reason the Yankees are who they are is because of the talent and the history and the city they're in. The logo. Yeah, exactly. That's just the way it's going to do it. It used to stress me out. Like when Lou was in Toronto, if you had like two days growth
Starting point is 00:24:31 on your face and you're like, am I going to run into this guy? And is he going to say something? Or do I have to like make sure I sneak into the washroom first thing in the morning, get a shave on and then start my day? Like these are the stupid things that you think of when that rule is in place. Crazy. Ridiculous. It's like private school. You're worried the vice principal is going to catch you.

Dear Hazy B, me and some buddies took in the Four Nations face-off in Montreal and visited one of the legendary establishments after one of the games. When we entered, when we entered we saw
Starting point is 00:26:12 one of our golf buddies dads inside and he was going full Frank the Tank in a back room. Not just having a good time but he was taking it to the next level, if you know what I mean. That's something nobody wants to be a part of I think what you got to do is I Think you go through the directory and maybe the old man's a member at the club, too Let him live his life. No, I know. What does he care? But you just put in a call and say, look man, you were out of your mind at Wanda's and we saw you. I'm serious.

Starting point is 00:30:37 gonna have a conversation where you just finished dinner and you say listen I didn't mean to see anything I don't snoop around but I saw this name pop up on your phone you've never mentioned this person before who is she you know just made me a little uneasy and you gotta approach it that way because anyway around the line telling you that name is just like it's a piano is a prying on a mix and that doesn't sound like a real name do that you know what your name here how do you need to call you just just say, file that name, please.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Yeah, that's a weird one. Or what you do is, if it is someone from work, truly, you type in a LinkedIn search with that name and see if that pops up. You got to go LinkedIn premium. Now you're starting to search and you're trying to find, and then if you find, then it's all good. But I think the best policy is just to come clean come clean with it I mean that's the thing about the bubbles right like the message bubbles that pop up
Starting point is 00:31:30 There's been a lot of people that have been burned. I'm sure you know the last 15 years with a pop-up on a phone like how many people got burned with like the iCloud where like they were on the road or Some nonsense and the i've had was back home going to be a big yes a little bit of their document a story for that like the cat like you know i don't know if it was a man or a woman whatever but it's like that you're missing the biggest take down of all the search history
Starting point is 00:32:00 well well yes mean searches that that brings very incriminating charges It could put you in a very tough spot with almost anybody But yeah, I think you just you know come clean just what's going on Who is that person and if you get a cool answer move on with your life who cares? Starting point is 00:32:24 My dad is 62. I'm 35 and my two brothers are 32 and 30 My dad is taking us to the Leafs Canes game tomorrow night for the first time in our life We have been separately as adults but never taken us as a family We're small town guys from southwestern, Ontario And we would love to have beers before and after the game in a location that is fitting for non-Toronto type guys. That's what my dad won't be uncomfortable in.

Starting point is 00:36:51 Or one pair of underwear, a pants and a shirt. But you have to have your clubs stacked from the driver all the way to the sixth degree. This is what you do. You put some clothes in the golf bag. Exactly. what you do. You put some clothes in the golf bag. Because you know you have the big zipper down the side, underwear, socks, all that kind of stuff goes in there. You need a little knapsack. You can keep that on your lap. It's your only bag.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Only bag is a golf bag, the travel bag. You kill two birds with one stone. Because if you go to, you might play Augusta or you could play Riviera, you could be my play play Augusta you could play, you know Riviera you could be playing like Pine Valley who knows what you're playing you do not want to be handed Clubs that just don't you know don't have grips or what are you doing? And you got to have your clubs Fully support that behavior. It's crazy. It's lunatic behavior, but I would share it.
