Starting point is 00:00:00 This hour of overdrive is powered by Fanduil. Fan Duel, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score. All right, here we go, Overdrive, off and running. TSN 1050 on the TSN app, your home smart speaker, up on TSN4, Brian Hayes, the O'Dog, Jeff O'Neill, Jamie Noodles, McClennon. What's going on? What's going on? Just some housekeeping right off the hop. Al's brother doesn't get off the cruise ship and commit to the team for the playoff run.
Starting point is 00:00:30 he's out he's out like where is this guy i have no idea how long of a cruise it's like we're on an island in hazy b just one thing we had some bets within ourselves i always thought of the team first
Starting point is 00:00:45 not selfish not selfish about the team that's all i cared about yeah i mean that might have to be addressed at some point too because it's very difficult when you're trying to make a team decision and you have a mutiny on your hands. Well, dude, I said it in the text message. If I went to you and Al's brother and said, I like the bears, you know what?
Starting point is 00:01:06 You two would have said, I know for a fact you would have text him and said, how about the dummy that likes the bear? That's what you would have said. I don't think I would have said that, but I would have preferred if you piped up like noodles after we made the pick. You can't hear anything about your own team. I understand that. After you made the pick, he chimed in?
Starting point is 00:01:24 Yeah, he texts me individually. He goes, hey, I like the bears, but I'm like, where was this commentary? when we're trying to figure out where we're going. No way. Now, conversely, you also like the Jags, right? You can't just say the T. You can't Floyd Mayweather this one, right? You can't only show the winning tickets.
Starting point is 00:01:39 You're also like Jags, Jags all day, and luckily, we didn't listen to you because we were on the Bills. And the Bills found a way to win. We came up with a new turn for sports athletes, T-Moo athletes. T-Moo athletes, and there's one down playing quarterback for the Jags. And if you got a T-Moo quarterback, you ain't going to win squat. Yeah, I think you're on to something.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Like you're indicating it's not Amazon, you know, Amazon athletes are the top. No, no. We're talking. We're talking Josh Allen is Louis Vuitton. Yes. And Trevor Lawrence is Timu. Yeah, I would agree with that. I would agree.
Starting point is 00:02:17 That pick at the end, like, I mean, you can't really lay it at his feet. I don't think so. He forced it in, though, noodles. Like, it was not. They had time, right? He tried to pigeon horse. in a pass and it got tipped and it gets picked off. But
Starting point is 00:02:33 like that's one, you know, there's tons of analysis, the analysis that goes into everything. When you're trying to predict things, when you're breaking things down, you know, we do it on different levels with different games and different sports. That one though, and I said it a lot last week,
Starting point is 00:02:48 I think you had to simplify it and just ask yourself, point blank. Do you think Josh Allen and the bills are really going to lose that Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguar? It wasn't that deep for me. Exactly. Like I get what the Jags did down the stretch.
Starting point is 00:03:05 I get that Lawrence had been playing better. I get that the bills didn't look like a powerhouse all year. That game just felt to me like there's no way Josh Allen and the bills are losing. He's not going to lose. You can take it a step further, Hayes, in the last five minutes when plays have to be made. Exactly. Because if there was anything you learned about the whole weekend is who can get it done under the gun with five minutes left in the game, when you got to march down the field.
Starting point is 00:03:30 That's right. And you saw it with Jalen Hertz. You saw it with. Brock Purdy on the other side with the win. Rock Purdy. Caleb Williams. Matthew Stafford. Matthew Stafford marching down the field.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Man, like it's a quarterback league, and you figured out why those guys, the top guys, make the most money because they get it done at the end of games. End of story. I agree. Like that, Alan, that throw. We showed a video just now. The first throw, he looked like he.
Starting point is 00:03:59 afflicted it like just with his and that way what 40 yards foot it's a brandon cooks and they needed that to that they had to score a touchdown at that point ridiculous like he's so good like this throw yeah that looked like he just like you know that's pure talent that is ridiculous that throw like with pressure on again they're down down wide receivers because davis is out palmer's out yeah you know he got beat up though like Josh Allen's body man yeah yeah It's concerning because, like, they, the Niners went across the country, and now they get past the Eagles to their credit. They're beat up. Kittles done. He left the game yesterday.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Now, they got to play on short rest at Seattle who are coming off a buy as a number one seed. And the bills have got to fly to Denver on short rest and play the Broncos who are coming off a buy as the number one seed. They're both playing on Saturday. So, like, the scheduling, unfortunately, is all about TV production. It's all about, you know, because they play the Monday nighter in the wild card, you can't have one of these two teams playing on Saturday because that would be a really short week. But it's going to be challenging for the bills and the Niners moving forward. After very, very difficult triumphant wins on the road wild card weekend.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Now you've got to go into Seattle and Denver, respectively, on a short week. Isn't that what the buy gives you, though? Yes. The buy gives you that. It affords you kind of that, you know, you get jammed up. If you had to play yesterday, you get jammed up where, you know, the teams that are sitting pretty, they're just like, okay, come on in, you know. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:05:36 It's a big advantage to have. And, you know, for Josh Allen in particular, like his knee, his hand, you know, he was getting the 10-yard push. He's just up in the air being pushed by his offensive line. It was crazy. It was a wild day. And I do worry about the recovery, yet he's such a freak of nature. There's some good quarterback still left, clearly. there's some good teams left, but that guy's going to be tough to kill, man.
Starting point is 00:06:03 He's going to be tough to beat. In the group chat, you saw what Luke says. Stay humble. But I'm saying one thing. I am concerned that you guys were the Beatles, and somebody is. I understand. Because we've got to get a win tonight. There's infighting.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Now, there's not infighting. One of our team members is in the middle of an ocean right now. Yeah. It's not even infighting. It's the guys just disappeared. Yeah. He's left. And he's, you know, we just had a magical, he's a regular season player until he proves otherwise.
Starting point is 00:06:33 I, I searched for that gift I put in there last night of Yoko Ono singing. I thought it was the greatest timely gift. Yeah, it's very concerning that Al's brothers engaged in touring around the Bermuda Triangle. Just doesn't care about anything now. And that is the thing. Oh and I are completely irrelevant. This guy has started his own band. he's doing his own thing.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Dude, I just called you 20 minutes ago. If this guy doesn't show up, it's gone. Like tonight, we're on the clock and we've established the pick. He hasn't even checked in to see where our heads are at. He's just gone. I don't know where his brother is. He's a solo tour, John Lennon. That's right.
Starting point is 00:07:12 He's solo. He needs a new song. It's not, call me out. We need one of Lennon's, you know, solo songs, you know, instant karma or a jealous guy or something like that. Like, there'll be a new song for him when he comes on. But we're on the clock tonight. Luke will join us in an hour.
Starting point is 00:07:29 The Wildcar weekend collectively has been brilliant. Last night's game was not an overly entertaining game. Credit to the Pats, credit to Mike Vrable, who almost broke his nose at the end of the game when his player head butted him in celebration of a big sack. But the games were phenomenal, and there's a lot to get into. We'll do so later in the hour. Luke will join us at 5.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Our pick tonight, I guess O and I, with Al's brother, you know, the spirit of Al's brother in a 10. for that pick. So we'll do that in an hour. Still waiting to see if there's going to be coaching changes in the NFL, what could happen with Harbaugh and others. There's big golf news today. We'll get to that. But the Leafs are back in action in Colorado this evening. And this is now, this is a put-up or shut-up week for the Leafs.
Starting point is 00:08:15 They've done the heavy lifting to re-establish the foundation. You know, that's what they've accomplished. Let me just stop you. I think the heavy lifting starts tonight. My point is, if they didn't go 7-0-2, oh, we'd look at this week very differently. Exactly. It would probably be irrelevant. Exactly. Like if they were 4 and 5, you'd be like, they're so far out of it.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Now you'd be talking, what are they going to do with trades and how do they handle their coaching? I guess you're right. Every lifting is now they're in the conversation of being there, right? Exactly. Like they had to go on a run like this, 7-0-2. A lot of it was against teams that they should beat, Vancouver included, clearly. But to their credit on Saturday, you're supposed to win that, and they did so decisively. Yeah, they just walked in as 3-0 before you even flinch.
Starting point is 00:09:01 You're like, games over. They're not losing. So they have established the mojo and I think some sort of a style of play here where they feel like they can win again, which they've been doing. Now you've got Colorado tonight, Utah tomorrow, Vegas Thursday, and Winnipeg on Saturday at Winnipeg. So you got four games coming up in six, nine. against some heavy hitters. Colorado in particular, Vegas in particular, but Utah's nothing to sleep on.
Starting point is 00:09:30 Utah's pretty good team. Pretty good. It's back to back. Yeah, that building's going to be loud. What do you want them to return home with on Sunday? How many points in the bank? Four. At least four.
Starting point is 00:09:40 You've got to stay pace with everyone else in the east because no one loses. Like Saturday night's a great example. The only two that lost were Ottawa and Montreal because they played teams in the division. They played Florida and Montreal. Yeah. You know, or whatever it was. Detroit and Florida.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Yeah, Detroit, Florida. So, you know, every other team is winning. Every other team is picking up points. I think it's, you know, unreasonable to expect they stay on the heater and they stay undefeated. I guess it's possible. That would be one hell of a statement. I think a hell of a run would be six out of eight. Yes.
Starting point is 00:10:11 And five, if you could get a fifth point in there, like a OT loss, shootout loss, something. If you can get points in all of them and you get six points out of eight, that's a great. That is a magical trip. If you can get five, I still think you're... I take it right down, noodles. Because not even just the opponents, but it's also like, it's stopped. They're playing at 10 o'clock tonight. Like, that's the thing.
Starting point is 00:10:36 Like, it isn't, hey, we're doing the hockey night thing, and, you know, in Colorado, it's a 5 o'clock stars. Like, you're playing at 10 o'clock, whether that affects you or not. You've traveled across the country. Colorado is, you know, an unreal team. They're top of the league. and there's a reason why. But Utah's no, like, pushover. They're skilled.
Starting point is 00:10:58 We know what Vegas is capable of. Winnipeg's won two in a row. They're actually trying to come out a little bit. I watched them play on the weekend. I thought they played well. But at the end of the day, you've got to play your game if you're Toronto, and you've got to get, I think,
Starting point is 00:11:11 five out of eight points on this trip to keep pace, like with all these other teams. Exactly. And again, because of what they did, the first 20, 25 games of the year, where they buried themselves to an extent. Now, again, you've laid the foundation where you're back in it, you're back in the hunt. You can't let it slide over six nights.
Starting point is 00:11:30 You can't, you know, you've got to find a way to get to four points. Like I would probably sign off on that right now. You privately came up to me and said, hey, you get the chance to allocate points to the Leafs on this road trip. We'll give you four right now. You don't have to play. You just go back home. I think I'd take it. And that might be a loser's mentality because there's 70 and two in their last nine.
Starting point is 00:11:51 If you want a four-pack, I would always say the most important game of the trip is just tonight. I agree. If you can just shove two in the bank right out of the gate against the real quality team and get a good feeling. And then it's not like the rest is gravy, but you can just take a bit of a breath. Because if you get pumped tonight, then tomorrow's a back-to-back, regardless of Utah. They're not a bad team. But it's a back-to-back. It's going to be difficult.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Tonight is like one you really want to get. Yes. And I think they're lucky they got Colorado on the front end. Like Ottawa just went through, as you know, And it was Utah, Colorado. At least you flew in yesterday, you settled in. And the Leaves are getting Colorado at the right time based on the way they're playing and they're feeling. Not Colorado.
Starting point is 00:12:31 Colorado doesn't really lose and they're a great team and they're on a heater. Basically, they've been on a heater all season. This game is probably the definition of a litmus test for the Leafs, you know, in general. Because it's a quick turnaround. Late game, like you said. Colorado's at home waiting for you. If you can show up and play tonight, Joseph Wall is going to get the. start. They're getting relatively healthy.
Starting point is 00:12:54 You know, like McCabe's back, Willie's back, and they return on Saturday. Tanev isn't playing, obviously. Stolar's on the trip. It kind of sounds like Stolars might return in the next two or three weeks. We'll see, but Barube indicated he may end up playing before the Olympic break,
Starting point is 00:13:09 which is a month away. You're healthy and you're feeling the best you felt all year. If you're going to get Colorado, if you played them three weeks ago, you'd get smoked. played them two months ago. We would be expecting that.
Starting point is 00:13:24 At least here you're going, if they play the way that they've been playing, you give yourself a chance. And maybe you catch Colorado on a night where they don't have their goods. That's why you play the games. I don't think this is, this isn't, like I told you guys the other day, was it Friday when I flew back from Colorado. That felt like a scheduled loss for Ottawa, just based on the schedule, based on how Colorado would lost two in a row in regulation,
Starting point is 00:13:48 then lost all season long. They've lost four games in regulation. So you knew that, and back to back and to travel and that. You're right. Like, they flight Saturday night. Now it could be a Monday night. You've got to find a way against a quality team to weather the storm early on. That's where Colorado, that first 10 minutes, it feels like they put 10 shots up.
Starting point is 00:14:10 If you can get out of that first 10 minutes, even or head or, you know, in the game, you got a chance. Minutes 240 is a big number. Like Fando's got Colorado minus 240 tonight. Any team going in there is getting that number. How many teams in the league that has Colorado on the second night of a back-to-back you think would say, just let us go home and they can have the two points. Like avoid injury or being. Just the whole thing, like Ottawa the other day when they had to go in there,
Starting point is 00:14:40 it was like if they had the option of just take the two and we're out of here, not even go there, I bet you a bunch of teams would say no thanks. Well, the altitude is also, it's real there. Oh, like you, you know, the legs, it's real. Like you're in warm up and the legs you feel heavier. You feel the altitude. It's not like, now you go in and once you get through that first 10 minutes, you feel like, okay, I can play here and all that. I don't want to explain my mindset to you in Colorado, Jamie, because you might think I'm crazy.
Starting point is 00:15:12 My philosophy was you go out for half a lot. a night, like you don't go gangbusters the night before the game, just a half a night, like just some nice, nice dinner, because then you're thinking, I just got to, I just got to play good because I was out a little bit, and you totally distract yourself from the altitude. It's not a bad way to go when you think about it. You just take yourself mentally to a different area, and you're like, I'm not going to worry about the altitude. I got to worry about playing because I know I was probably out a little bit later than
Starting point is 00:15:43 I should have been, and it makes you forget about the altitude. Hasey, is that crazy? I like that distraction. It's like a distraction mind. I don't have time. Yeah, I don't have time to think about the altitude because I got other problems. You create a problem for yourself to make you think differently. So the rink is called like ball arena or whatever, but it used to be their old rink was called Mick Nichols.
Starting point is 00:16:04 And as you walked in, it had a giant sign saying you were at one mile above sea level. It could have been, before Twitter and that, it was one of the greatest troll situation. signs ever. As you're walking in, you read a sign saying your legs and your lungs have no chance as you walk into this building. And it was like a troll sign. It literally got them maybe a lead in a game. It may not have got him a win, but it got him a lead. There's no sign there. And guys are now in great shape. They're fine. It's different now, but it is weird. Like, you do feel the altitude in Colorado. It is a weird feeling. Yeah. And it's on, you know, anyone that's going to play there to figure it out.
Starting point is 00:16:46 And it doesn't help either that Colorado is a stacked team and they're playing great. They're chasing history. They're chasing down that Bruins team from a few years ago. I think they're on pace for one more point right now than that Bruins team. We had this chat the other day. Like, is he put himself, like, has he gotten closer to McKinnon? Tied in points now. That's a very interesting conversation on this show.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Well, Celebrini, I agree with Brian because MVP to the team too. Celebrini, that team's in a playoff spot. San Jose, none of us picked them. I don't know if they even picked themselves to be in a playoff spot, but they've played very well. That is the definition of MVP. But McKinnon, you can't discount the fact that what he's done. This guy's ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:17:32 No question. I mean, the guy, he's leading the league in points now. McDavid's right behind him. It's a fascinating hunt for the rocket as well. You know, if it's McKinnon and McDavid chasing down 60 plus, goals, that will be electric down the stretch. And I think what makes it you know, adds an element
Starting point is 00:17:48 of, you know, intrigue is the fact that they're going to be teammates in a month at the Olympics and they're going to share the ice. And, you know, the updates coming and coming back from over there. Did you guys see the jumbo-tron? Like the rink? It's, it looks like a 28-inch TV.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Dude, someone sent the gift where it was like, is this a jumbotron for ants? Yes. It's Zoolander. Yeah, that's what it was. It was a Zoolander gift. Is this a Jumbotron for ants?
Starting point is 00:18:19 Right. It is wild. There was some positive takes out of CJ. By the way, great job by Chris Johnson going over there. I thought it was an embarrassment. Like those dressing rooms, they haven't even been drywalled yet, man. There's no drywall on the walls of the dressing rooms. You know the Geppetto's will be right there.
Starting point is 00:18:37 You know how it is. They're going to clean that. That'll be not a problem whatsoever. I don't know. No news. Not a problem, Jamie? They've got games there in five weeks. I think there's a real chance that team skates out onto the ice and has paint on their
Starting point is 00:18:49 back and they don't even realize them. Well, all I know is an expansion in Minnesota in 2000, okay? Our first game, they were still finishing the rink. Like the dresser rooms underneath, they were still doing some work for the Minnesota Wild's first game in that building. Happens all the time. They did that with the dome. Remember the sky, don't we had Paul Molder on it?
Starting point is 00:19:10 He was like, yeah. Paul Molliter was like it was the Brewers Jays, and day of the game, they're like, man, these guys are putting lights up in here. Yeah. I remember watching the news that morning. They're like, they're still putting toilets together in here at the dome. Yes. It was a scramble.
Starting point is 00:19:25 But that's the thing that I think people get frustrated with. This didn't sneak up on anything. No, it didn't. They didn't get the contract to build that, you know, eight months ago. This has been, you know, years in the making. And it's like somebody was like, yeah, get around. to it like figure it out it just i hope i and you're also saying how about this though you're going great job you know cj i would love a trip to italy right now too i was about to have
Starting point is 00:19:54 the same response which is kind of a grease but it's not like this guy you know is flying into a war zone or so the guy's in milan exactly like he's flying into milan he's having unbelievable food he's probably going for runs in the streets and that and we're like oh great work CJ, you know, boy, you've forced to go there. A martyr for sports journalism. Our boy, CJ, man. I guess I could, I guess. Yeah, Northern Italy, maybe, I guess.
Starting point is 00:20:19 Yeah, exactly. I guess I could do that and possibly check it out for a while. You wonder how he got that assignment? Like, was it like a lottery assignment? Or was there an email that said, anybody want to go check out this rink in Milan? And he was happened to be awake at two in the morning and responded immediately and said, I'm in. It's a great question.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Exactly. That might be one you pitch. You know, CJ's a heavy hit. hit or maybe it's a pitch. Maybe it's I got an idea for a story. You know, this is a big week for that, right? The Leafs are going through Vegas. A lot of people, I'm sure, saying, yeah, I could possibly
Starting point is 00:20:49 take that trip. That might not be a bad one. I thought we were going to. I thought we should. Don't you think we should have been there? Well, of course, but you know, it's okay. It wouldn't have been nice to see. It would have been a lot of fun. Now, is the Mitch Marner story that big for you right now? You know, it's fascinating? So the game's on TSN
Starting point is 00:21:05 on Thursday. We've got it on Thursday. And the Golden Knights are in L.A. the night before. So the whole song and dance with Martyr, I'm not sure what the build-up's going to look like. They're not likely to have a game day skate. I can't imagine he speaks with the immediate day of. The following week, when they roll through Toronto, they're in Boston the night before, so probably the same routine. I'm very, very curious.
Starting point is 00:21:27 The L.A., it's like, what is that, a 45-minute flight? It's not like that grueling. He'll be in his own bed by 1230. I'm sure he'll be at the rink in the morning. Possibly, but does he want to be found at the rink? is the question. That is a good question. He may be at the rank. Maybe he's just like, I'm not going there. If I don't have to talk to everybody, I'm not talking
Starting point is 00:21:44 everybody. Maybe he wants to, though. Well, and that's the, I thought of the analogy today, because, you know, you bring it up, noodles. It's obviously, it's one day at a time in a season like this, and the Leas are in Colorado tonight. Like, this is a big game. Yes, it's a late game, but they're the benchmark in the NHL. Like,
Starting point is 00:22:00 Colorado is the best team going. They've had a great season. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Leaves respond tonight. I think they're going to play well. I don't know if they're going to win, but I think they've earned that level of confidence with the way that they play. You should play pretty well in that building. And they generally do. Well, they usually start well and then try to hold on for dear life. Yes. You know, they've had a few of those where it's like four two.
Starting point is 00:22:23 They're up like four one or four two and then Colorado came storming back. Storming like 29 shots and the third guys are blocking shots with their teeth. You know, they won four or three. That was a few years ago. But I'm really excited for the game tonight. Tomorrow, not necessarily as much. But I think when the dust settles on Wednesday, that's when Mitch is going to come back into things. And the timing is
Starting point is 00:22:46 fascinating because it's the first time in a long time, because of how well they're playing, and because they're winning and because they're healthy, Marner has really... He's faded in the market. It was a constant conversation in the summer throughout camp when they were
Starting point is 00:23:02 struggling earlier in the year. It was every single day. Oh, Mitch Marner, ran hey, what about this? Marciaan brought him up last week, jokingly, ran him out of town. Okay, he came back up. It was more about Brad than it was about Mitch. But it's almost like one of those movies or pieces of literature where it's like, you know, the girl, it's like the movie Swingers. Remember John Fabro? He's like, man, I miss my girlfriend in New York. And then he meets Heather Graham. And then the girlfriend calls him. And he's like, actually, I'm, I'm okay. That's what this feels like. It's like the end of Swingers where Mitch is going to come back in.
Starting point is 00:23:37 to the picture, but I think people have finally been like it's enough. We've moved on. He's not coming back. He's not going to be here, and the Leaves are playing well. But you know what? Here's everything in pro sports. What's the hot girlfriend in pro sports? No matter what, it's winning. Always. And they've run into Heather Graham here the last nine games. Yeah, it makes the goaltender problems go away. It makes social media posts go away. It makes people talking about Mitch Marner. Everything is good when you're winning. There's no distractions. There's no one bringing up an old player.
Starting point is 00:24:07 nothing. It's just, you start winning, it's all smooth sailing. A month ago, but a month ago we were talking about them more because, what, their power play was not good. They were struggling in the standings. There was all sorts of things. So it's like different team, Matthews can't play without Marner, all of these, you know, rumblings, whether they were fair or not, now of a sudden, you're right. When you've got points in nine straight, it's like, okay, we found a formula here that is, moved on from that. Their power play does look like it has some semblance of
Starting point is 00:24:41 clicking nightly. All of that type of stuff where before you're like, power play can't even get set up because they you know, Marner used to carry it through the neutral zone. All these types of things. Now there has been a phase where it's like, okay, maybe the early breakup, everyone was in shock. Now it's like, okay,
Starting point is 00:24:57 life has moved on. That's right. And the PK for that matter too, and he was number one PK. He did everything. And their penalty kill has been huge. Like penalty killing, gold goaltending, getting some health. Carlo's been good. McCabe's been good.
Starting point is 00:25:11 You know, they're feeling it. Like Craig Baroube is laughing and joking and, you know, he looks like he's in good spirits, should be. Did you say Stolar's is going to may possibly be back on this? Yes, so Baroube said today, A, Storlis is on the trip and he was skating
Starting point is 00:25:27 this morning with the team. First time he's done that. And Baroube indicated he may play before the break, which the Olympic break is a month away. They have, I think, 12 games left. He wasn't going to put a definitive timeline on it, but all of a sudden, Stoloz is out there, those look like new
Starting point is 00:25:42 pads, too. Do you work? I don't know, anyway. Get all pads. Yeah, they've got 10 pairs of pads. Yeah, I guess so. Change your jerseys. True enough. The thing is, it's interesting that now he's on the, all of a sudden he's there. We'll come back and talk about that because. The timing, like, I don't want
Starting point is 00:25:58 to get into speculation on goaltenders and Jamie, I don't want to disrespect the position. No. But this year, they've been disappearing at the weirdest. times. It's just, like Demko the other night, the guy on Saturday. The guy on Saturday disappeared. I thought he got pulled. But now he's out for 10 days. It's like, I don't know. I don't know what happened. I don't ever want to talk about injuries, but man, oh man,
Starting point is 00:26:20 it's weird how they just fly out of the net and they're gone for two weeks at a time. And then, I don't know. I can't deal with it. Yes, there's a number of examples. We all know what they are. And stole ours, you know, no one knows exactly what's going on. The Leafs know, obviously. But there's no, there's no transparency. again, it may be a coincidence and may not, but Wall's playing really well. Dennis Hilderby's playing really well. You know, and it's
Starting point is 00:26:44 like if you're at some point, the athlete, you got to play. You know, you got to play. You got to get in there and earn your keep because another guy's going to come in and try to take your job. And only one goalie can play every night. They can't say, all right, you're starting on the third line. Good to have you back. Give us a week.
Starting point is 00:27:01 We'll get you back up to your usual spot. Only one guy's playing. And right now, the other two guys are playing really, really well. That's right. And I would say to him, you're going to have to sit and watch those guys play if they continue to play well. I understand you're one of our guys, but if they're both going, I don't know. I just find it frustrating, man. I agree, though. But I think it's individual. Craig Barubi starts on that particular night who he believes is going to give him the best chance to win. That's it. Like, I don't think it's like, hey, we got to get you back in the mix because of this and that. It's like, are you going to give me the best opportunity to win? because regardless of them getting
Starting point is 00:27:36 points in nine straight, they're still going to be in a fight the rest of this year. Absolutely. And this isn't about just working people back in. He's got the right to get back in, but if the other two are playing well, Craig will probably look at them and say, I need this guy, I need that guy.
Starting point is 00:27:53 I think you might need three the whole rest of the season. I think you're probably right. They have up to this point. You know, they have up to this point. All right, Luke's coming up. I'm going to need some help from you guys to determine which was the worst loss that I have personally suffered the last eight months.
Starting point is 00:28:07 We'll break that down. A lot of news out there. Again, Brooks Kepka coming back to the PGA tour. Bregman signs out of nowhere on Saturday night. He's going to the Cubs. With the Cubs. For reportedly 10 million more than the Red Sox were offering them, they are freaking out in Boston.
Starting point is 00:28:22 Well, he wanted some more years from that socks. Allegedly. But exactly. I mean, anyway, we'll get into all this kind of stuff and the potential fallout for the Js, the ALE East, etc. And Leaves were the big week. The Rapplers had a good weekend. Again last night in overtime. Scotty Barnes, player of the week in the east.

All right, overdrive continues, brought to you by Fanduo, bringing you more ways to play your game your way. Luke Wilson in studio in half an hour. HBO on the clock, we need it tonight, man.
Starting point is 00:29:23 We need it tonight. We're already down 4'1. You guys picked, you're perfect. 3 in O in your picks. What is the race to? 14 points. 14 gives you a majority. A lot of games left, a lot of points still left.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Staying humble over here. Oh, do your best. Credit to you guys. I'll give you the spread tonight and I'll give you the selection right now. Houston minus three at Pitt. It's Houston all day long, dude. It is Houston all day long. You're going to go against Aaron?
Starting point is 00:29:52 Yeah, I am. Yeah, I am. We're going to figure out. We talked about Timo quarterbacks. C.J. Stroud is going to determine if he's Timo or not tonight. Timu or not. I agree. Are you Vaton or are you Timu, dude?
Starting point is 00:30:06 Big night. Big night for him. That defense in Houston has been electric. Tomlin in the playoffs. Rogers in the playoffs recently, not great. So I'm with you on that. Okay, we'll lock that in in about a half an hour. I like where you're at.
Starting point is 00:30:21 And listen, the Packers game, what a choke job. And now it's just a gong show because Matt Lafleur's got a year left on his deal. And they're talking extension with him. Everyone in Green Bay can't stand this guy, and I thought he was, I think he has to be at the forefront of that choke job on Saturday night. How do you get into extension talks after that and noodles? By the way, I thought this guy was going to drive to my house because we had a private wager on the bears and the Packers. And when the Bears took the lead, I just sent two letters to him.
Starting point is 00:30:53 It said, hi, and he never wrote back. I was so bad. He never wrote back. Yes. And Brian, you had to know. know the text that I put into the group track was maybe coerced as well talking about Matt Lafleur.
Starting point is 00:31:08 Yes, everything was coming at me. And I get it. I got to own it because I picked the Packers. I said multiple times, I'd much rather Chicago than Philly or anyone else. I wanted the Bears. I don't believe in Caleb Williams. Credit to Caleb Williams, man. He was slinging it in the second half. That guy
Starting point is 00:31:26 showed up. And, you know, the interaction between Ben Johnson and Lefleur, the handshake was really icy and Johnson's yelling about, you know, after, what do you think it's going to be like after? Like, first he starts when he gets hired. He says, I really like shaking Matt Lafleur's hand after a win. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:31:46 Such a greasy play. Look at Lefleur. He wants to chase him. He's like, oh, I'm dying to kick that guy right in the back. Like he wants to because look at Johnson, how great, like he yells something at him and he's gone and he's so happy. And you should be in a scenario like that. I'm going to put myself into the middle of this.
Starting point is 00:32:02 I need you guys to help me with this because there are three ways to lose, ultimately, in a big day. I know where you're going to go with this. Are you talking about the losses you've personally suffered? Yes. You're talking J's game seven, Leif's game seven, and that Packer game. Exactly. And they all played out in the three different variations of losing. And I'm curious how you guys would answer this.
Starting point is 00:32:27 Maybe we can get a poll going. I've got to, do you want my list? Yes, let me flush it out. here first. So the three the three brutal ways of losing the first example is your team just doesn't show up. That's obviously the Leafs against
Starting point is 00:32:42 the Panthers in Game 7. That's disgusting. That is so hard to handle when you're watching it and you're like, man, this is such a big game. You're so amped for it. And just immediately, you know, they're not here. Like they're not, they're just going to get pumped. And that's what happened.
Starting point is 00:32:58 The second option or second variation of losing is hard. break, that would be the Blue Javes. It's a great game. It's a back and forth. Anyone can win. Lead changes. Just like a remarkable sporting event and someone
Starting point is 00:33:14 has to lose and it happens to be your team. And the third variation of losing is choking. When you have it, it's over and you throw it away. So those are the three options and the three teams I follow
Starting point is 00:33:31 the closest would be the least. The Blue Jays and the Packers, and it's happened to them all in different ways in the last eight months. Blown out, team doesn't show up, heartbreak, choke job. Which one is the worst, in your opinion, to experience? The one, the least one is almost the easiest to overcome it because you can leave halfway through the second period and say, you know what, what? There was never really a chance tonight. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:33:59 It was like, you just mentioned it. It's like, it's disappointing, but they weren't there. And they never really had a chance to win that game. So, like, mentally, that would almost be the easiest to deal with. I find the J's would be the most difficult one. Yeah. Because I woke up, like, basically confused the next morning, asking myself, how in the hell did they not win that game?
Starting point is 00:34:24 The world, how did they not win the World Series with two cracks at it? And I was just confused slash disappointed. pointed. I mean, the choke job, the Green Bay, it's like you expected some kind of response from Chicago. Obviously, you want Green Bay to lock that down after the way they play. What was it? 21 to 3, man.
Starting point is 00:34:43 And it was 27-16. Like, you pile on one more TD there. That lights out. Or get a stop, one stop. Yeah. You text me. I think you called me, and you're like, they just, they literally stop playing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:57 Stop playing. The biggest play of the game, the biggest drive of the game. or possession of the game was the first possession of the second half. It stung that they missed that field goal to end the first half, because then you leave with a loss in a way, if that makes sense. And Chicago leaves the field with a win. Instead of 24 to 3, it's 21 to 3. But the Packers get the ball to start the second half,
Starting point is 00:35:20 and they go three and out in like four seconds. And it was pathetic, predictable play calling by Lafleur. And it gave Chicago an opportunity. opportunity to say, okay, they're not going to come out and kill us, right? Like the Packers are fine with just putting up 21 points and having a great first half. So that, like the most excruciating experience is probably the choke job because it takes longer. The heartbreak is so acute because with the Js, you thought they were going to win so many times. But can you throw one more thing into here?
Starting point is 00:35:54 This is the only thing that why I think it's the Jays at number one. That's the World Series. I know. It's game seven. World Series at home. It's game seven of the World Series in your own building. See, with the Leaves, that's round two of the playoffs. And I get it.
Starting point is 00:36:08 The Leafs have, that's uncharted territory. But with Green Bay, this is the first round of the, you know, this is. They weren't winning a Super Bowl. Without Parsons, they weren't going to win a Super Bowl. I'm thinking probably just because of the weight of the game, I think it's game seven. Yes. Of the Blue Jet, because we all thought, including myself, was like, they're going to, to win. They're going to win in that building, and it looked like in the ninth they were going to,
Starting point is 00:36:37 like that, or the eighth, what it was, the eighth or ninth? Well, seventh, eighth, ninth inning. Like, they had opportunities in the, in the ninth, kind of falafa. They had all those opportunities. The pious, or no, kind of fleff was in the 10th. The pious catch in the ninth off, Ernie Klemann. The ball getting caught underneath. Like, there was just so many different things going on. There were a million different things. Game six. I think the magnitude, of what was at stake is probably, doesn't Jays go one? I would agree with you,
Starting point is 00:37:07 but again, it's, and it ultimately doesn't matter. It's just every sports fan can relate because there's the three ways of losing. Your team gets blown out, there's heartbreak or they choke. With heartbreak,
Starting point is 00:37:17 and like you said with the Blue Jays, there's no self-loathing. You don't hate anybody. You're like, wow, what an effort, what a game, can't believe it. Someone had to win. With the choking, they're self-loathing.
Starting point is 00:37:27 You're like, God, I hate this team. You know, I really, hate someone's got to go for that someone's got like there's no way of like promoting it as anything but positive and the same thing with the way the leaves went out clearly but it was a great great weekend and we'll see what comes
Starting point is 00:37:43 with it tonight with you know literally a legend in Aaron Rogers this could be his last game tonight like this might be it he loses tonight he may just retire after the game in two weeks three weeks maybe he returns maybe he doesn't Mike Tomlin may be done in Pittsburgh after tonight so there's
Starting point is 00:37:59 there's a lot on the line All right, Luke coming up in 20. We got a mood meter. Oh, I think you're going to step up with a little mood meter, the seven Canadian coaches and where they stand on that. I also got some breaking news after a break if you want to get to it. Okay, breaking news. So we'll get to some breaking news.
Starting point is 00:38:14 We've got a lot of breaking news today. We'll get to that and more still to come. Leaves in Colorado tonight. Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and up on TSN4. Unmistakably Canadian. It's the music that raised you. The artist's
Starting point is 00:38:30 Raising the Bar. Hi, this is Brian Adams. Hey, my name's Brett Emmons. I'm from the glorious sons. Hi, I'm Nellie Fittato. Made in Canada, the station that champions Canadian music. Loud, proud, and all yours. No passports required.
Starting point is 00:38:44 Just press play. Tap into Made in Canada now on iHeartRadio.ca. Or the free iHeartRadio app. All right, Luke Wilson, in about 20 minutes. We're just talking about this on Friday, that there have not been any coaches fired in the NHL. been GM's fire but not coaches and I guess the streak has come to an end Dean Eveson is out down in Columbus and Rick Bonas is stepping in
Starting point is 00:39:09 that's interesting Rick bonus the other day you know I mean great coach I just I think Dean Evanson's a great coach I just don't know if Columbus is I guess maybe their expectations were higher I guess so but I'm with you how are they higher like it doing yeah I know it's I wouldn't have pegged Columbus as the team that would go first. I think Jersey's in trouble. Our boy, Sheldon Keith, they're in Minnesota tonight. They lost again over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:39:41 To Winnipeg. To Winnipeg. They got Minnie tonight. It's not good. You know, there's some ugly seams. Our boy top 50, Dougie could be available and might be traded at some point. But, yeah, I guess Columbus, they might be looking at this thinking, I guess we can salvage the season.
Starting point is 00:39:59 Like, why else would you do that unless you feel? feel like Rick Bonas can step in and find a way to get them back in a playoff race. Or maybe it's assessing, you know, maybe Don Weddell trusts Bonas to assess, you know, his organization. Because Weddell hasn't been there that long and come in and see what we had. Like, that's what Bonus did in Winnipeg. Remember the end of the year? That was one of the more scathing year-end, what, press conferences, bonus a couple years back with Winnipeg. Yeah, they lost to Vegas and he just hoarded.
Starting point is 00:40:30 A lot of people. Like I said, you know, in the room, it was more attitude, is more of that type of stuff. And then, so maybe there is something where he's looking at the culture or whatever. But I personally, I think Dean Everson's a really good coach. It's just, you know, Columbus, I don't know. Like, name me their superstar. Is it Marcheco?
Starting point is 00:40:48 Name me the guy that makes a save. And Jamie Wells. Werensky's their star. Zach Warrens. Sorry, you're right. Zach Wrenski is a superstar. But up front, like they've got a bunch of good, young players, like good young players.
Starting point is 00:41:02 They have needed an elite centerman for as long as forever. The last guy they had was Ryan Johansson, and he left and went to Nashville. And I don't know, they've had Rick Nick. It's just, I don't know. What is Rick Bonas? As much as we like the guy?
Starting point is 00:41:18 What is him over Dean Evans? Unless the guys just hated his gut so much where they went to the GM and said we can't do it, which I find hard to believe. Who knows? In today's world, we don't know what today's athlete is, is how demanding there. I was talking to literally somebody about it yesterday and how today's athlete is just
Starting point is 00:41:40 wired completely different to when the three of us. I mean, I'm older than you guys, but the three of us were playing. Put it that way. And like Fantilli, I think, is a really good player. I think he's their number one sentiment. They got Monaghan there, Charlie Coyle. Down the middle, I don't mind their team. I just, that Marchenko's a good player.
Starting point is 00:42:02 They just never, unfortunately, get off the mat. Like, they're just, you know, they're the Sacramento kings of the NHL. Like, they, they just, they just, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's not a regular dump. It's a sky dump. I'm sorry. I know.
Starting point is 00:42:17 Someone's got to say it. You know, someone's got to say it. I was just, it was like, it was like I gave you a 10 second and it came off the top term buckle. I get it. I'd rather not. I'd rather, I'd rather. I'd prefer not to have to use that analogy, but, you know, it's just they've been around a long time,
Starting point is 00:42:35 and there's just not ever anything of relevance that happens there. I know. Sacramento, okay. So now you've got your new soundbite. Well, then you just call them what Shack called the Sacramento Kings back in the day, the Sacramento Queens. Right. He's like, they're not even the Kings anymore.
Starting point is 00:42:52 Yeah. Well, and that's when they were actually a good team with, like, Weber and Mike Bibby, and they were actually going at the Lakers. Dude, who's that, dude, the little white dude on the point guard, Williams? Yeah. He was sick. White chocolate. Yeah, he was so sad.
Starting point is 00:43:07 He was so good. The point being is something I had to give there, whether I don't know if it was, it might been with the players of the coach or something, because the expectation, I don't know if they expected to be a playoff team. And you look at it, it's seven points from top to bottom, really. So maybe they're looking, hey, we need to go on a heater here too. you know, that's the... Sure, and they're entitled to that,
Starting point is 00:43:31 and they've got to jump over a lot of teams, you know, like they're... Yeah, it's just going to be a challenge. You know, you look at it, the way the East is playing out, all these teams just keep going. And, you know, now the Islanders are sort of... They're getting goaltending,
Starting point is 00:43:43 and they're defending pretty well, and they got Schaefer and they're in. But I look at it, it's like, is Philly going to stay where they're at? I don't know. They got a new coach, and they got a bump. You know, Pittsburgh, new coach, bump. You know, there's some examples of that,
Starting point is 00:43:56 I guess, within their division. Patrick Wa got there a year ago. bump for the Islanders. It may not be as much about this year as next, but Rick Bonas is just not a young guy. This isn't a, you know, he could be our coach for the next 10 years scenario. It's not going to likely happen with Rick.
Starting point is 00:44:11 He's been around forever. Great guy, great coach, you know, revered, respected, will step in and do what he's going to do. But I don't see how they salvaged the seasoner. I could be wrong. Other teams have gone on heaters. Again, Buffalo's done it. The Leafs have done it recently.
Starting point is 00:44:27 But you just got to jump over so many teams. That's the one thing I wanted to bring up. And I think this is, we're going to go through this the rest of the season. We should almost in two-week periods go, what have we seen in the last two weeks? Because was it, how long ago through these nine games for the Leafs, where we were like, you know, Jerry's percentage, 20%, they make the play. Now you're like 80%. You know, you feel better.
Starting point is 00:44:52 Like type of thing. Like these two-week, I think, windows, you can see teams flip on their head, vice versa, all of that type. That might be the rest of the season with the Eastern Conference. I think you're starting to see a settling in the West, but I don't, I think the East is pretty lumped up. Like the Rangers might be in one without Chesterke. Yes, they're in big trouble without Chisdurkin. And New Jersey. They got pumped by Boston the other day, like destroyed.
Starting point is 00:45:19 Did you see NHL app? They had to put the 10 in a different, it was. 10-2, it looked like 2-10. I was like, what's that score there? And it was 10-2. Don't be mistaken. Yeah, I think the New York, I think the Rangers are in trouble, the devils are in a bad place. Ottawa's
Starting point is 00:45:35 got some demons right now. Like there's some weird stuff going on there in Ottawa. They lost again to Florida on Saturday. Yeah, and then Columbus. But you look at it, like the Leafs are knocking on the door. Florida, you still believe, Florida's going to be in it. You know, whether
Starting point is 00:45:51 they get in or not, I guess it'll be left to be determined. I don't see them fading. I think they're going to be in the hunt. So, you know, there's, yeah, it's not, it's going to be, it's going to be tough sledding, but there you go. There's some coaching news out of, out of Columbus. That one just kind of caught me by
Starting point is 00:46:07 surprise, to be honest. I just didn't see that one coming, and given that Eveson is very well respected. That's so, Rick Bonas. I think it's just probably, hey, we're going to try something different here. Yeah, yeah, I guess so. Different. All right, so there you go. Some breaking news. We'll catch up with Luke into the
Starting point is 00:46:23 next hour, the lease in Colorado tonight. Brooks Kepka back in the PGA tour. He's going to play at the farmers in two weeks. And then at the waste management, like almost right after. I want to know how the $5 million dollar charitable donation is working. Yeah? You think that's that like a hundred grand over 60 years or whatever the hell the math is? Do you think it's deferred? Dude, no one's pulling out a chunk of five sheets and saying, you know. Yeah. Well, he'd have it. I'm going to build homes for people. I hear you. And he's out of the like player impact program so he can't make money on that. And that's allegedly or you know, reportedly a part of this
Starting point is 00:47:01 that you're not going to be able to make that money. So they're counting that as part of the penalty in projection, you know, projecting what could happen with Capga in the future. But he's a big name. And they've opened the door for three more guys to return. The Shambo, Rom, Cam Smith. Basically like if you three want to come
Starting point is 00:47:17 with Brooks and cripple and end live golf and come on over here, carefree, we're willing to have you back. And they put Put a timeline on it. By the way, I just want to say, I think it's great for the new roll-off or whatever his name is. I think it's great he did this. The new commissioner. We'll get into it more in the next hour.
Starting point is 00:47:32 Luke's coming up. More on this. Leaves in action tonight. Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and up on TSN4. You've been listening to Overdrive, powered by Fandul.
