Starting point is 00:00:34 Brian Hazy, O'Doug Jeff O'Neil, Jamie Noodles, McClennan. Got the lease in action tonight. Got the national championship game tonight on TSN Ohio State versus Notre Dame and Luke Wilson coming up here in a moment get into a number of things with Luke look back on the weekend including Ben Johnson offensive coordinator from the Lions he got out quick he has accepted the job with the Chicago Bears and I think that's a smart play I think if you're in Detroit you got to be a little bit concerned.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator, he might leave too. Although it didn't look great for him on Saturday night, but I didn't think it looked great for Ben Johnson either. I've heard you often talk about positions where you stated that that might not be a position that would be envious. That's like, who would wanna go to Chicago
Starting point is 00:01:23 with that graveyard they've been mowing through like I get it everybody wants that dream they're like I'm getting the chance to be an NFL head coach but have they not seen what's gone on before them like it's one guy after another guy after another guy what makes you think that you're gonna be the guy and that's I guess what's what motivates guys to go there because they are gonna be that guy that's I think what it always comes guys to go there, because they are going to be that guy. That's, I think, what it always comes down to is, you're competitive and you think,
Starting point is 00:01:50 I'm different than everyone else. Like, that's the nature of sports, right? Happens all the time, and I'm sure Ben Johnson's looking at it the way others have looked at it, and maybe as a believer in Caleb Williams, maybe as a believer that they've got some offensive pieces there.
Starting point is 00:02:03 I'll tell you what, that Dan Orlovsky, he said months before that draft that Daniels is the guy that... This is what is crushing if you're a Bears fan, okay? They drafted Mitchell Trebesky instead of Patrick Mahomes. Yes. And Deshaun Watson in that draft. Now, I know Mahomes was never really being talked about as a guy that would go second
Starting point is 00:02:24 overall. But still they moved up to take Mitchell Trabisky and then they get the first pick and they take Williams and you have to be terrified that Jaden Daniels is going to be legitimately a superstar. Like he's obviously had a remarkable year but it is one year. CJ Stroud was remarkable last last year this year he came back down to earth I would caution people crowning Jaden Daniels quite yet not taking anything away from what he's done still very young right there could be some ups and downs there might be a sophomore slump but as of now it has to be terrifying if you're in Chicago that they took the wrong guy again because Daniels looks amazing like the the performance he put on on Saturday, and you said what he did the week before in Tampa. It wasn't an opinion statement, it's fact that rookie
Starting point is 00:03:10 quarterbacks do not win in the playoffs. No, they don't. And this guy, I mean who knows where they take this? Like are they going to play the Eagles and get their ass handed to them? Probably so. I mean they went into Philly like a month ago and won the ball game. You know like a last second victory. Yeah yet it's a divisional game and anything can happen here i don't know i know but we got a little coming out so i can ask him this to but like how big of an upset was that the commander like like presenting where you like shock like shock shock their like i i i really like my yes i i was
Starting point is 00:03:43 somewhere between very surprised and shocked. I was shocked it was to the point, like it played out the way it played out. Like if you had have told me some miraculous, you know, two minute drill and Daniels does something crazy and they win by a point or a last second field goal, that would have been very surprising. This was, Washington was in the driver's seat the whole game more or less and Jared Goff really struggled really struggled
Starting point is 00:04:10 But Daniels in that offense were so great and I thought the Lions were gonna come out of the NFC I thought it set up perfectly for them home field again. The commanders don't have a history of winning They've got a rookie quarterback a head coach and Dan Quinn who's you know on the job for the first time this year they're coming off a bye yes they had injuries on the defense clearly but it didn't look that bad two weeks ago when they destroyed Minnesota right like two weeks ago they crushed Minnesota with all the same guy you can't say injuries caught up with us right exactly you still finished with the first seed with all those injuries. You went into San Francisco Week 17 with injuries and won that game.
Starting point is 00:04:49 You just got beat, man. Like you golfed through it away, played poorly, made some really poor decisions and Daniels and the commanders came in and just said we're not losing. My fear is that there might be some similarities with the Vancouver Canucks. how last year the Vancouver Canucks, everything was aces, and they had this team, and they've got it all together, and it's like, are they gonna morph back into the Detroit Lions again? That would be scary.
Starting point is 00:05:15 I mean, is everything. If you're a Lions fan, you gotta be thinking, we want this to be somewhat of a long-term plan here, where we're not just good for two years, and now we're garbage again. Well. somewhat of a long-term plan here where we're not just good for two years and now we're garbage again. Help me smell what the Willson is cooking. Alright, let's bring in a long-time Lions fan, right? From southwestern Ontario. A former Lion himself.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Proud Lion. Proud Lion. Here's our boy Luke Willson. Luke, how would you answer that? Are you at all concerned that a window closed here for the Detroit Lions? Yeah. Yeah. I don't think it's fully shut by any means, but I think it's going to get tougher. I think it's going to get much, much tougher. They can still do it.
Starting point is 00:06:00 I think next year it's going to be even more challenging after that year ends. But what I'll say is for Detroit, and I have very first-hand knowledge of how this feels, let's say they end up doing it next year. And this locker room with this coaching staff, there's always going to be that, what if we got out of our own way? And obviously, you know, for me, it's a pretty, it's one play that you think about. But for the Lions, I think they'll be kind of right there where you look at last year, I thought they should have won that NMC Championship game as I think a lot of people did, you know. And then you look at this game against the commanders. They have no business no business
Starting point is 00:06:47 Not being the commander's and I and I hit my after Jane Daniels I'm not trying to getting away from him. The guy was incredible, but Detroit across the board Is a better team than the commanders. They have no business turning the ball over five times in doing what they did I felt for gov because I thought that was uncharacteristic of him. He hasn't had many games like that this year. He's been usually really good. I thought the trick play was an absolute abomination, but as you guys know, I'm not the biggest trick play guy on planet earth.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Hey, as you talk about Windows, what'll happen with this Lions team? And again, I do draw a lot of parallels to Seattle. Now, our talent was mainly on the other side of the football, on defense. But when you have all these young guys, like Aiden Hutchinson, obviously he's on defense, but Jameer Gibbs, Laporta, you know, you've already paid Sewell, you got golf locked in, you paid Montgomery,
Starting point is 00:07:47 is you're gonna pay these guys. And you can, there's this whole myth like you can't pay guys. You can pay your guys when you draft and you can pay the stars when they become those guys. But where you get jammed up is you miss the meat and potatoes then of the rest of your roster. I always laugh because the year we won it, some of our best quote unquote football players
Starting point is 00:08:12 were not household names. I remember we had a D Lyman named Red Bryant and I was like, this guy is incredible at football. We are D Tackle, Brandon Me know, our center, Max Unger. These guys were not perennial all-pro players, but in the same breath they were phenomenal football guys, great locker room guys, just like everything you dream about probably as a coach to have on your team. Well, now all of a sudden when you pay all the stars, you can't afford that, you know, upper tier veteran guy, that kind of lunch pail dude,
Starting point is 00:08:47 and you sit there and you got a team full of stars and rookies or vet minimum guys. And I think that it was pretty telling for us, and I think Detroit will go this way. We're now all of a sudden, you're like, man, yeah, I still have these guys, but we've got a real weak position group here, but we've got a real weak Position group here or we've got this going on and then also you see it firsthand Ben Johnson Just signed I believe today with the Bears. Yes, he did So our OC who are all used to were used to his lingo were used to his calls were used to everything He does is now gone. I'm not saying you can't find another OC. I'm not saying that. But there's gonna
Starting point is 00:09:25 be some growing pains there. Does that cost you a game or two next year? Maybe. And then does that cost you the one seed? Most likely. And now what I'm saying is tougher is you don't have the bye week. You're not playing every game at home. So I, that was a bit of a long-winded rant, but I cannot believe that Detroit let this one slip through their hands. Part artsy before we get into specifics of the game is there anything you've been seeing in the guys that have advanced off kc philly washington i know you talked in the past about like the the line of scrimmage in the physicality of it like going to two super
Starting point is 00:10:00 balls of you seen something in the winners were like you have to do in that and that's why they're moving on yes yes and I thought Josh Allen did it was a huge emphasis of this yesterday and I'm glad you asked that question because in it this is my era this is what I was caught and it worked but I remember for all the you know things about Pete Carroll out there and his energy whatever every single day part Part C, every day, he would come in and talk about turnovers. We had a designated day every week
Starting point is 00:10:29 and say this is turnover Thursday and it would be a competition between the offense and defense, see who would win. Every week of every year that I was in Seattle, we had that day. And every week he would come up there and give our rankings as far as where we are on the plus minus. Then he would give historical context
Starting point is 00:10:48 and be like teams that win the turnover margin, win games in this league, it was always somewhere in the 80%. So again, I'm sure it's similar to that now. And then he'd go like if you're plus two, it bumps to this. If you're plus three, it bumps to 90 something. On and on and on and on.
Starting point is 00:11:03 And he'd be like listen, we can coach all this stuff up up but if we turn the ball over it does not matter and I look at these games and let's go with the Bills Ravens and the Ravens sit here and lose by two and you're negative three in the turnover battle and again you're if you're negative two you probably win which which is, they outplayed them, let's put it that way. I did think that the end of the day, the Ravens shot themselves in the foot. And I do tip my cap to Josh Allen because he did everything he needed to do.
Starting point is 00:11:35 And I go to the Chiefs, and the Chiefs obviously didn't have the quote unquote turnover. So that was the thing they'll say, like, oh, the Texans didn't turn the ball over. Well, what's the difference between turning the ball over missing a 55 yard field goal? You know if you would have thrown a pick on for it down. It's the same thing So you sit there and it's like hey the chief came out here played very very well
Starting point is 00:11:57 Situationally they gave up 12 points 14 was the final number, but that was because of the safety They gave up 12 points. They got crucial third down sacks, they were able to at least create a long field goal that missed, you got a mistake by the kicker on the extra point, and the next thing you know, you win by nine. So again, at this point, Part C, it's not about first, it's not about stats, it's not about anything.
Starting point is 00:12:24 It's about winning football games. And the best way to win football games is to not turn the ball over, find a way to get some, and do the simple things right. And I think you saw that this weekend. All right, something that you want brought to you by Boston Pizza, Canada's favorite sports bar. This January at BP, get delicious mouthwatering pasta
Starting point is 00:12:40 starting at 11.99 every single day. Enjoy the pasta as you love it, prices you can't miss. Hustle on your local BP tonight. Asking online, Luke, who's to blame for the Ravens' defeat against the Bills yesterday? Lamar Jackson, Mark Andrews, or simply the Bills were a better team?
Starting point is 00:12:57 How would you answer that? Oh, gosh. I would say, to to me that's tough. That's a great question. Do you think he nailed this one? Yeah, if I had to pick, I would say none of the above, but if I had to pick out of those three I would go Lamar. I agree.
Starting point is 00:13:22 You know. I agree. It's not good enough. Well, listen. You're basically playing from behind. You're playing from behind the whole game. Because of him. And that's important. Sorry to cut you off here.
Starting point is 00:13:30 But like, listen. It's a 60-minute game for a reason. The second half was Mark Andrews' fault. No question. That fumble was inexcusable and he's got to catch that ball. But the first half was all the mark. Awful pick. Awful fumble.
Starting point is 00:13:44 It was 7-0 after the pick. first half was all Lamar awful pick awful fumble when they it was seven nothing after the pick and then seven number nothing or seven seven after the pick seven seven after the fumble he had two opportunities to keep the lead for Baltimore and he threw it away twice as humble looks horrible it was purposely dropped it well he got careless he got careless and yes the second half that's on that's on Andrews undoubtedly. But you're not in a position where you're chasing the game if Lamar plays better in the first half.
Starting point is 00:14:10 I I am definitely exactly on board with that. And, oh, what you said about the fumble, too, you know, he just dropped it like that. Everyone's saying on the thing. I don't want to be that guy. But one thing that's getting annoying with the Bills are like if Damar Hamlin makes a play, were like it was Damar Like it's supposed to be better than anyone else given the circumstance I'm like Lamar dropped the football like I I'm glad Damar was there. But anyways
Starting point is 00:14:37 He basically and you said he's careless with the ball the the corner route that was shocking to me the interception. I Don't know who's wrong there. I'm assuming it's Lamar, but they're off by 15 yards. That's not even close. And the miscommunication there, the fumble, I sit there and I'm like, man, Lamar's doing it again. And what's weird to me is that across the board, and I'm sure Bill Fins will be mad about this,
Starting point is 00:15:06 but that's the best team in the NFL. And that's including the Lions, that's including the Eagles, that's including the Chiefs. On paper, the Ravens are the best team in the NFL. You don't need anything else than what they have. They got Lamar, who can clearly do it all, Derrick Henry, when they finally got him loose, looked. In that second half, I'm like,
Starting point is 00:15:25 oh god, he's gonna break a big one. It's a matter of time, he's gonna break a big one. You got the best run defense in the NFL. Now, they got pushed around a little bit in the first half yesterday, but they did a better job in the second half. In the past, defense got astronomically better down the stretch.
Starting point is 00:15:42 And again, you sit there and you don't need to be Superman. Like you just don't. Look at Josh Allen. Didn't need to do it. And I didn't think Lamar had to until the fourth quarter. And that's that. And the reason I don't put it on Andrews is because I will say that I did feel like
Starting point is 00:16:01 Josh played the game efficiently well. Like he knew exactly the task at hand you know exactly what they need to do he got a window with this early lead uh... what about the fire you a bernsey was that like uh... yet when i was that ball was that the idea that all of the thrown need to be better i think you can't catch it that i think ninety ninety percent i catch it
Starting point is 00:16:24 the ten percent of throw could help them But my point with Josh is that he would got the ball back with timeout, right? That's getting lost here would have been tied and the bills had a minute 33 with two timeouts at home There's no way that Josh doesn't in my opinion Josh Allen as much as I love to rag on the bills It's that's like giving Patty my homes the ball. Josh is going right down the field now If bass mitt makes the kick is a different story Okay, but there's no way in my head that Josh Allen doesn't take that ball and get them in the field bowl range Yeah, I agree. I I thought I think the Ravens did more to lose that game than the Bills did to win it
Starting point is 00:17:01 But that I don't mean that disparagingly against the Bills in a way that's a compliment because I think when they needed to do what they needed to do it happened every single time but the first the first drive of the game Baltimore goes right down the field punches in six I think it was imperative that the Bills came right back out and matched it they did that they come out in the second half, they're up 21 to 10, a little bit conservative, three and out. Then they give up a field goal, then they go like six and out, they move the chains once,
Starting point is 00:17:31 then they give up that touchdown where Henry and Hill just absolutely shredded their defense. And at that point, we were in the group chat and I said, it is imperative the Bills put up points here. They have to stop the bleeding and they did. They put up points when they had to and that that was a perfect example of that. Like Josh Allen, Sean McDermott, the Bills they looked at it and said these guys they're turning the ball over we've got the lead we can put ourselves in a position to win and they did and it wasn't overly flashy or sexy but who cares? That's what my homes and the chiefs have been doing all year and those are the two times. I agree I
Starting point is 00:18:08 agree and speaking of that group chat, I think the toughest part is for me, I'm sitting there and When Andrew's caught that first down and I believe the score was 21 16 at that point and this was after the The six and out I'm like open the floodgates this thing's gonna be 45 30 by the end of this yeah like Derek's gonna break a big one sort of like say Quon did in the other game we're live right now and I'm getting my fingers warm up just run my mouth and when he fumbled that ball I was devastated I'm like this is there's no way. There's no way being minus three you beat Josh Allen the Bills. No well
Starting point is 00:18:51 that's and listen the fumbles you know how it is sometimes it's just luck too like where it fumbles where it goes who's around and not only did the Bills recover they took off. You know they picked up yardage like it just it broke their way and into their credit now they got Kansas City waiting for them and you know I guess what we'll do an early look ahead here you've got Kansas City versus the Bills Washington versus the Eagles. Kansas City favored Eagles favored both teams at home. How do you like how do we set up the week here? Where does your head go first?
Starting point is 00:19:26 So I'll start with the tougher matchup, which I'm gonna assume we're gonna have to pick, Part C, which is the Bills versus the Chiefs. And I think they're very evenly matched. And this is, if I wanna cross the board, I think you give Mahomes and Josh Allen a wash. You know, one A, one B, these are the two best guys you want in this situation.
Starting point is 00:19:47 Why don't we pick the game? We're ahead. We're leading. No, because it's who everyone in the regular season, man. We should pick the game. It's consistent throughout the playoffs. We get to choose. That's embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:19:57 We get to choose. You guys did it last year. The rampage has started though, Part C. Don't worry. It's 6-5, man. It's 6-5. We feel great about where we're at was in the board again paid that i'm gonna go back in the can of c a two-cent of pride i have a couple questions before you kick me off about the situation to do the right now
Starting point is 00:20:16 is trying to jam us and i'll explain but back to the any a p championship i think that the bills have a better offensive line and a better run game than the Chiefs, but I would give the Chiefs a slight edge as far as their pass catchers. I like the combination of DeHop, Travis Kelce, and Hollywood Brown a lot more than I would say Kim Cage, Nakir, and Amari Cooper. And then on the other side, I like as a whole by a a lot, the Chiefs defense, especially when you have a guy like Chris Jones, but what I'll say is the equalizer here, is that the
Starting point is 00:20:54 Bills defense is number one in the league right now, taking the ball away. I think this is a very, very tight game, and I think it comes down to one simple stat that I've been harping on turnover margin because whoever can steal that possession if if the Chiefs are plus one in the turnover they win if they're minus one and the bills are plus one the bills went one of I think it's gonna be that close what about the refs if you're in Buffalo are you not terrified right now dude I'm sorry man the Holmes is risking like you can't flop like that. It's so embarrassing the way he flops.
Starting point is 00:21:30 That's not football. That's embarrassing. He's won three Super Bowls, all these MVPs. You start flopping looking for calls when it's not necessary. It's embarrassing. Didn't he have a situation earlier in the season where he asked the ref to give him a heads up if a guy was coming earlier in the season? Yeah, he was miked.
Starting point is 00:21:43 He was miked. Tell him that one. Like this call where it was like the in the season. Yeah, he was miked. He was miked on that one. Yeah. Like this call where it was like the Texans helmet to helmet, that's not unnecessary rough. That's an embarrassing call. And credit to Aikman because Aikman called it out immediately. Aikman's the man. I agree.
Starting point is 00:21:54 It was a brilliant analysis. Both calls were ridiculous. Awful. The first one on Will Anderson, what I think happened is the guy who throws it, and this is a thing, and Pete would talk to us about this, is nowhere the guy calling penalties stands at. So if you look at it, when we get the view of the TVs, okay, that's one thing where it's like,
Starting point is 00:22:16 oh yeah, it wasn't really head to head, it was mortars to chest. The guy who calls it is behind him. He doesn't see the original thing. So that one I still don't think, I wanna be very clear, I do not think should have been a penalty, but I get how it was closer. The slide earlier was 1000%,
Starting point is 00:22:33 I think that was when Akeman was discussing about, it was not a penalty. But what I was annoyed with, with the Texans, is I could not believe the narrative of the referees. They scored 12 points. The 14 they got was because of the safety. There is not a team in the NFL right now. I can tell you this right now. That can sit here and say, we're going to score 12 and beat Patrick Mahomes. It will not happen. So again, as much as you wanna blame those two plays
Starting point is 00:23:09 as the game outcome, the Texans went out here and their kicker was an abomination. The 55 yarder missed by 45 yards. Fairbairn like walking back to Houston. Yes, missed an extra point. DJ Stroud took some very, very bad sacks and they scored one touchdown and it got a couple field goals. Like, that's not going to cut it. So as much as I do think those were bad calls, it was a nine point win, which if they punt, it actually
Starting point is 00:23:39 is an 11 point win. It's not, again, I just... She's just so better. She better case executed but unquestionably but the bills are not going to do what houston did and it comes down to a flag it's just going to lead the heads exploding if it's it right noodles i mean you know it's not that we're not a narrative that they think that the league is rigged that's all you see on twitter is like, oh, here we go. And all the memes of Mahomes like hugging and kissing the refs and all sorts of things.
Starting point is 00:24:11 They're really good. They are good. They are so funny. But Luke, before we get you out of here, I had a question for you. What did you make of Dan Campbell laying all the blame and then all the tears and all that type of performance at that podium
Starting point is 00:24:27 You know, I think he's an emotional guy he's kind of been that way and I respect him laying the blame I I You guys have heard me gripe about this a million times and it's the trick plays and And when they work, all these, you know, and I'm gonna be a bit annoying, but the novice fans think they're the coolest things on planet Earth. These are sick. And I'm gonna tell you exactly,
Starting point is 00:24:54 for the dawn of time and for the continuance of the dawn of time, teams that use trick plays, these are the general scenarios. There's two different times you use a trick play. One is, you've got some sort of tell on film. In college this happens a lot, in the pros it's very, very rare where you're like, hey, this guy over commits
Starting point is 00:25:16 or they're coaching him here and it's 100%er and we're gonna run this trick play. We ran a trick play in the NFC Championship game, it was a fake field goal against Hazes-Packers. That was a hundred percenter. We probably watched 55 snaps and it was all in where A.J. Hawk was lined up on. It was either coming to me or going to Gary Gilliam, depending on where A.J. Hawk was. So in John Ryan, shout out to Saskatchewan for throwing it. We thought it was going to go to me, so we called to play Pam Anderson because it was a Canadian to a Canadian. We all sat down at the line. That's option one. Option two when you
Starting point is 00:25:48 run a trick play is generally when you're not good enough because you sit there and you say if we're in this game we're gonna need that spark we're gonna need that you know big play and we probably can't hang with these guys so we're gonna draw up a trick play and gamble and hope it works. When you're as good as the Detroit Lions, you don't need them. And I get that they had some successes here with trick plays. When you're up 20 and teams are all hands on deck and you're like, man, we gotta find a way, we're getting gashed right now, and you do a trick play, one, I think it's just
Starting point is 00:26:22 stupid that you burned it off your card because you can't rerun that trick play, and two, it's like, oh congrats, it looks sweet, it's gonna make everybody's highlight reel. But when you're down 10 to a defense that is bend not break, that you're gashing, you are gashing outside of turning the ball over. Why? Why do we give the ball to Jameson Williams to throw it?
Starting point is 00:26:45 And then of course, in the infamous words of every OC when they run a trick play, it's not open throw it out of bounds. But you know what wide receivers will never do? Throw it out of bounds. And I thought that was a huge play in the game because the way the Lions can score, they're never out of a football game, but they just give another turnover and Jane Daniels made them pay. That's the end of my trick play rant. That's exactly it. Like it's one thing to pull off a trick play where you know flea flicker back to golf, oh it didn't work. You put the ball in Jameson Williams hands, down 10. And and now the guy who I guess you know came up with the trick plays is Ben
Starting point is 00:27:21 Johnson. Now he's the head coach of of the Bears like will he just carry that over in Chicago Luke or like whatever gets there and he's like no trick plays Dan Campbell was forcing that upon me we're not doing that type of behavior here it's funny because I would actually argue that Chicago would need the trick plays based on Detroit possibly yeah chasing teams but it would be fascinating to know who called that. So there's two ways this can go. Um, and you got to know the relationship between Ben and Dan Campbell, but is that one thing where Ben Johnson was like, Hey, I've got this on the card and I think
Starting point is 00:27:57 it'll work here and then Dan says, do it. Or is that Dan going, Hey, I want to spark here, run the trick play. Cause that is generally how it goes it generally goes where the head coach will bring up I want to run this trick play let's do it I'm glad you clarified that because like everyone yeah I tweeted out Dan Campbell just Dan Campbell then people like it was Ben Johnson I'm like guys the head coach like makes the call on the pulse of the game plan Right like in other words, so Ben will draw the play of this Ben will definitely draw that like the creation of the play is bad, right?
Starting point is 00:28:35 But the idea of whether we're calling it and when to call it on Every team I've played on generally is driven by the head coach Yeah, and sometimes it's even before the drive like he'll say on the headset on every team i played on generally is driven by the head coach in sometimes it even before the drive like he'll say on the headset pay if we get to the forty year i want this i want to get the trick play whatever that you know whatever the name of it is yet exactly and and and and again it's unfair to dan campbell but i just put bill bella check in his shoes and there's just no way Josh McDaniels would be like hey Bill I'm gonna run this trick play in
Starting point is 00:29:09 this situation. I do like a trick play in a massive moment though don't forget the the Foles trick play Eagles. Yeah the Philly Tour whatever it was called. In the Super Bowl. That was a great play. The Philly Special. Philly Special it works. And it worked. If it doesn't work you look like a dumbass. That's the conundrum. If it doesn't work you're a meatball if it works. And it works. If it doesn't work you look like a dumbass. That's the conundrum. If it doesn't work you're a meatball, if it works you're a genius. I mean that's pro sports in a nutshell. So again in that Philly special I would love to know, but again from my experience with the crit plays I've ran, I would love to know why they had that in. And why I say that is I'm guessing they're like hey this guy or whoever's supposed to fall back
Starting point is 00:29:48 gets wildly nosy or there's a 90% chance they're in this coverage and Nick Foles will be wide open, yada, yada, yada, yada. When you run 15 trick plays a year, you're not doing that anymore. You're just simply making stuff up. Like we would have, I'm not joking, we would have trick plays that would live
Starting point is 00:30:06 for 12 weeks sometimes, 14 weeks. Hey, this is our trick play and we love it. And we're gonna practice it once a week, maybe once every other week, but like we're not actually gonna call it until we need to execute it. So that's another thing with these trick plays is it's like you're not,
Starting point is 00:30:23 you don't roll into a game with 15 trick plays. These are a weekly thing that you might have practiced twice in a walkthrough and twice in practice. They're very high risk. I guess that would be my point. Well, we've got ourselves a barn burner here, ladies and gentlemen. 6-5 Owen Wilson currently leading Hazenboro. These totals are jamming us, man, but we saw the board beautifully all four of us
Starting point is 00:30:46 complete redemption on behalf of the show last week was a an absolute embarrassment an absolute embarrassment last week we went all for six on the spread this week we went for no everything's coming together now and we're gonna have ourselves quite the weekend next week are a buddy will catch up later in the week and we'll get to those pecs and and set the scene more for the conference championships. Bart, see the rampage will continue. We're going full steam ahead this weekend.
Starting point is 00:31:13 We're seeing the board clearly. You better hope, Hazy, you make the right pick. We might clinch depending on what we decide. Not possible. I'm getting hats made that say Rampage in capital letters. Okay, go ahead. Go ahead. All right, see you, Luke. Luke Wilson. Rampage. Rampage? You guys need to... Isn't there a wrestler, Rampage Jackson or something?
Starting point is 00:31:37 There's a UFC fighter. No, he's a UFC fighter. Yeah, he's a good fighter too, man. Nasty. Scary. Scary fighter. Scary, scary fighter. Scary, scary fighter. Scary fighter. Why?
Starting point is 00:31:48 Is that not the right name? No, yeah, it was Rampage Jackson. That was his name. Jackson, yeah. Big time, like scary, scary UFC fighter. Yeah, like this old school. He was in the Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Rampage Jackson, like that era.
Starting point is 00:32:03 Like that was UFC 100. I remember being at a bar sitting in a booth and those three were sitting in the booth like is looking for sauce after the these fight like after the fights ufc one hundred they were we were in a group with them cuz you know what he's is a huge hockey fat you know i'm saying that you guys want to see a speech getting tripped or you
Starting point is 00:32:24 want to break income but we come back? Why don't we come back and see that alright? Let's come back and we'll put Screech on blast here alright because there is unfortunately a Blue Jays analogy here at work although the Jays are starting to get out of this right? Anthony Santander signing a five-year deal today so switch hitter with power coming up if there wasn't both outside there was a guy with a booth outside selling like screech there's my guy there's rampage Jackson there's scary he could throw a lot of the dome that's got like a screech picture with blue jays look would you buy a t-shirt and wear it into
Starting point is 00:33:01 the ballpark I might I would I would as of today. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt They're still more offseason and it could change but today. I think that's a pretty lucrative business plan Unfortunately, I guess I'm who he's made with just screech on the screech in his tux with the flowers We'll come back with some screech. Overdrive continues, TSN 1050 and on TSN 2. Alright, Leafs Lightning tonight. Get to that in just a moment. Got Chris Johnston coming up in about a half an hour. But the Jays making a signing today. This is big Keegan Matheson will join us in an hour. Anthony Santander, good player, 44 homerun, switch switch hitter bring some power to the
Starting point is 00:33:47 middle of lineup good signing positive positive move for the Blue Jays and something they desperately needed because I think on Friday it really it peaked in terms of embarrassment with Suzuki choosing the Dodgers naturally that's another thing like earlier in the day though it was taking on the other contract with the with the with the Guardians yeah the international explain that like the okay so this is what this is where again like it's almost like a conspiracy theory that Jays fans are trying to figure out like is the whole league just
Starting point is 00:34:22 punking the Blue Jays because reports came out earlier in the day that the Dodger or that the Padres had been tipped off that they were out on Sasaki. Yes. So why would they get tipped off but the Blue Jays didn't get tipped off? Like that is something that I desperately want to know. Well when you have three teams he might have just called them and said you're you're out of contention. Right, but why why drag the Jays along and not the Padres is what I'm asking. For more money. Well I get that but he didn't get any more money that's the whole point with the Dodgers they only had so much money they could give him and he took the 6.35 million or whatever it was from the Dodgers and left the 10 million on the table from the Jays and the Jays
Starting point is 00:35:04 they didn't get the message or something that you're not actually gonna get them. So they called up Cleveland and said, we need some more international pool money, bonus money, so we can give this to Sasaki. In order to get that, they took on Miles Straw, who probably won't play a game for them, has like $11 million or $12 million left on his ticket.
Starting point is 00:35:24 The Guardian said, sure, go ahead, take the pool money you got to take this guy with you and then like two hours later Sasaki's like screech we're going to the Dodgers like why would you think we were coming there and that's what I can't figure out why the Jays thought they could get them and that's why on Friday I was bullish on the idea of them getting them because I'm like how does this mean why would you make this trade at the last hour to get the international pool money if you don't know you're getting them? It's incompetence. It's embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:35:50 It seems like you only pull the trigger on that if you know you're getting them. Exactly. It's crazy. Exactly. And that's what was so embarrassing. And then Tanner Scott signs with the Dodgers and then immediately John Heyman or whoever was coming. Jays were in on him, too
Starting point is 00:36:05 Like it's just like a bit. It's like an archive tweet anyone signs anywhere It's Jase also in on that guy. So you have peak embarrassment if you're a blue jay fan because the whole baseball community is punking you and What is and you know what it is screech powers? It's it is screech, but it's become a punchline that they're runner up every time. You see it all the time in hockey. I'm not going to name the names, but it's like, oh, that guy was second. This guy was up for the job. It's the same three people that you hear for GM jobs.
Starting point is 00:36:36 Oh, that guy was, no, they weren't. No, they weren't. Not even close. That guy wasn't getting the job. Exactly. And the same thing, it's like the Jays were in on it Well, of course, I mean they should be in on all of these players That's the job of a good manager or at least a manager supposed to be calling on it
Starting point is 00:36:52 But don't don't make it like they're the runner-up every time like to me. That's where the embarrassment Well, Jamie, how like the embarrassment? How much of this falls on management when time and time again? And I'm sure some of the fan base has this question, when player after player chooses another team, how much is that on Ross and Mark when the player picks another team? Like they're throwing boatloads of money and at the finish line every time the player says it's going to be the Dodgers. How much do they have to wear that or how much is like if there was a pie chart of
Starting point is 00:37:27 responsibility how much is on those two people? Listen I would use game analogies right we just talked about Lamar Jackson and we talked about pro athletes all the time you've got to take advantage of your of your chance to shine you've got to win the games or else you lost. The offseason this is management's game seven like your game seven is you're in the boardroom and you're trying to sell a guy on on choosing you If you keep losing you have to wear that now, of course, there's more to it. It's deeper than that There's more variables you competing with other teams that you just simply can't compete with in terms of a number of different reasons But I think also at the core of it from the Blue Jays pitching standpoint, and I mean pitching to free agents, is they're
Starting point is 00:38:07 not that good. And they don't have anybody signed long term. Like the reports came out the guys that they brought up to pitch to Suzuki, like pitch the case of the Blue Jays were Bo Bichette, Dalton Varsho and Chad Green. Green's been here for a year and he's a free agent after this year. Bo's a free agent after this year. And by the way he's Chad Green. And he's Chad Green year and he's a free agent after this year. Bo's a free agent after this year. And by the way, he's Chad Green. And he's Chad Green. He's got no connection to the Jays.
Starting point is 00:38:31 Where's Vladi? Where's Gozman? Where's Barrios? Where are the starting pitchers that represent this team? Sasaki's a starter. I thought that as soon as I saw that tweet. I'm like, so Chad Green is what? Going to the airport and taking this guy out for dinner exactly like where are they going to
Starting point is 00:38:47 Wendy's up by the airport then he's motoring them back to Pearson hey quick drive through Roky and then I got to get out of here cuz I'm Chad Green and I got bigger and better things to do guy flies to LA and in Otani's waiting for him right show what lines up in LA it it's dave roberts movie bets o'connie and freddie freeman yes and we're chuck and chad green at the airport right and a drive through but the airport uh... manna there's not there's gotta be an excuse for that well i gotta be
Starting point is 00:39:17 some sort of like you want to hit a wendy's drive uh... i know a place out here. That'll knock your socks out. Yeah, I got a place out by the airport you've got to see. We got to show the screech. Okay, let's play the screech. All right, so this is the movie made.
Starting point is 00:39:35 It's Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn. It's coming off the movie Swingers, right? They're trying to take advantage of something that got hot. They're outside of a club in New York. They're trying to get into the club and screech shows up you know what you can be here this is this is not a person in the i'd be
Starting point is 00:39:53 area is not here i'm on the and say we have a lot of was happening you should have to say what's up and i don't know about the but the and you've been listed and i think that a little bit of six-pack this is the same started out with a forty look good
Starting point is 00:40:16 just let's reach i'm waiting in line you just let's reach screeches in the club. Screech. You just let Screech in the club. And I'm waiting in line. That would sting if you thought you were a big shooter back in the day and Screech comes
Starting point is 00:40:34 rolling in. And he wheels by you. Yeah. That was also Fiorio from the Sopranos. You notice that? That's right. Fiorio from the Sopranos was running the door at that club. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:44 But anyway, listen, we're moving in the right direction here if you're the Jays. the sopranos was running the door at that club yeah but anyway listen well we're moving in the right direction here if you're the J's Anthony Santander is a good signing take him bring it he helps see what else you got right yeah you have to get the hoodies though oh the three of them we've got the hoodies who is that with the who's falling down after the pot Greg Norman Greg Norman we have the Greg Norman hoodies we're gonna have the screech of the parties yes we need a speech at the door when lisa turtle and that more so getting after that's it
Starting point is 00:41:12 heartbreakers picture the heart breaking picture and but the heartbreaking picture it's a heartbreaking reality it is we just the actual justin indo ice of screech with the flowers because i don't know if that is but i don't want to happen and i just an endo iso screech with the flowers because I need it for the hoodies I don't want Zach in it I just want those Zach making out whether you don't want that you just want him what do you want you want the whole shebang I don't know there's a party I think you kind of need the two you know making out because that's what leads to screech just crumbling man do you want the whole shebang yeah I don't know maybe we can put it to a vote to we just isolate screech
Starting point is 00:41:47 for the hoodies or do we get everyone involved i think everyone paints the whole picture right noodles like yeah i don't need to okay we'll do everything will do it all have job from the bridge put it up again but i i we need to see that it might be just that if you want a nice old screech or do you want the whole wide shot look at screech you know what like that is I think you need the whole shot I think you can't look at the sweater on Zach Morris man that show was wild say by the bell is
Starting point is 00:42:15 that a double collar popped up yeah that's a triple man that's a jacket with a double pop on top yeah yeah how did he have that does the guy that that guy did screech had a tough life when i say roberts yeah i passed away yes he did pass where i live yes reach passed away i believe so dustin dine in the assignment and he was i think it became a black a porn star and that there's a there all sorts of that it's a yes it's a really bad's a sad story, but we could still have a laugh about the actual that scene. Well, yeah, that's a TV show.
Starting point is 00:42:51 I mean, we're calling it, it's about Screech. It's not about the real life stuff. Exactly. That picture we need for sure. Chris Johnston in 20 minutes. Keegan Matheson on the Jays signing today. The Jays, you know, throughout the off season and what could still happen the rest of the way overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on TSN 2. Alright we sent out his brother out into the city with a pair of leaf
Starting point is 00:43:12 tickets and you have to guess where he's hiding for your chance to win them this week we're giving away tickets to the Leafs and Wild next Wednesday you guys ready for the first clue of the week? Hit me. Yeah. Hey OD fans, happy Monday to you. Back for another set of clues this week to get yourself a pair of Leafs tickets. It's Leafs vs. Wild on Wednesday, January 29th. Gotta find out where I'm hiding at this week. Here is your Monday clue. After my vacation and then trip to Aurora last week, I'm happy to be back in the city of Toronto for this week but I got to tell you it is absolutely freezing outside right now. So I'm gonna be staying indoors this week and head into one of the biggest most beautiful buildings in the city to do it.
Starting point is 00:43:58 Look at Al's brother. Is he trespassing or is he allowed in there? Not sure. What do you say it's one of the most beautiful buildings in the city? What's a beautiful building in Toronto? What does he consider a beautiful building? That's a better question. Exactly. That's true. Alright, tune in tomorrow for another clue in the first caller through on Friday with the correct location wins a pair of tickets again to see Leafs Wild next Wednesday. By Now's Brothers brought to you by McAlpine Ford in Aurora, our family, the Ford family and you full details at TSN1050.ca. So Joseph Wall will make his 25th start of the year, which for most goalies is an inconsequential
Starting point is 00:44:38 stat, but for him it means something. Is it's more starts than he's had at any point in his pro career. Never started 25 in a season. He's going tonight. Well, he's got to get to a point. What would you want to see from him, Jamie? What would prep him for the playoffs, coming down the stretch, if ultimately he's the guy? Just a stretch of games where we're assuming that it's a story where he's not playing,
Starting point is 00:45:07 if that makes sense. He plays 8 of 10 and you're going, geez, he's got a level of consistency where you're not worried about... One thing that's always been in the back of my mind with him playing a lot of games here is if he's gotten up slow on a play or something, you're like, uh-oh. I want to get past that remember last year we were concerned you know Sam Sanoff like we said once he went down you're like that was my favorite part of some of Walls saves the other night in Montreal is that he got up right like I think we're past that knock on wood for him but like that's the biggest thing
Starting point is 00:45:40 seeing some like we're seeing some consistency out of him he hasn't had listen last when they were in that three game losing streak or whatever he didn't play great but he neither did the team in front of him so you know it happens but I think I thought he was great against Montreal I just like to see him you know put together a string of games here like he has and it's just hey you know it's good quality goaltending every night some consistency and so far he's doing that there's an off game here and there but not just to continue to do that all to get to maybe 4550 games I don't know if you'll get that high but if he gets
Starting point is 00:46:12 somewhere it's gonna be mid 40s if he continues this thing yeah you would think so and installers was on the ice taking shots today Cali Yarncrook was out skating those I don't think those guys are that close to returning but still as well return at some point but i thought again on saturday wall just kept battling man gave up three in the first period could have been five or six it don't and also when any position forward defense goalie coaching everybody involved to stay kinda in it down three cobb in the big leagues
Starting point is 00:46:40 often it's yet is it could have been a white flag moment where like forget it not our night they didn't they didn't quit those are very very big when i was like robertson who was even bob and bobby mcmahon over at the larsen absolutely absolutely i want to get into it more the six o'clock our alright we'll get back into the game from the other night and again tnf tonight we're waiting on some mcdavid news as well the suspension likely comes down in the 6pm hour we'll
Starting point is 00:47:07 be tracking to see what comes of it. Chris Johnston Keegan Matheson in the final hour overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on TSN 2. NFL Red Zone. Absolutely incredible!
