This hour of overdrive is powered by Fanduil.
Fan Duel, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score.
All right, here we go, Overdrive, off and running.
TSN 1050 on the TSN app, your home smart speaker up on TSN4,
Brian Haysio, Jeff O'Neill, Frankie Carrado.
What's happening?
Why did you guys ask for my liens today regarding the football games?
Just going to ignore them again?
No?
that was Al's brother.
Al's brother wants to be involved.
I think that's reasonable.
I mean, Frankie, you chime in here because last week we went, what did we go?
One and one or did we go perfect?
I can't remember.
No, we went one in one because we lost the Bears.
We picked the Rams and Bears.
And O was on the Seahawks big and they won.
And he claims he was on Denver, although it wasn't a very strong push.
But, you know, he forgets the week before he had the Eagles winning the Super Bowl.
got spanked and he had Jacksonville beating the bills and they lost.
But nevertheless, last week he was pushing for certain picks.
We chose to disregard them, but give them to Luke.
Disregard is appropriate.
Disregard is, you know, it's halfway home to what we did there.
But Luke maybe was going to pick the opposite side and O was going to get his way anyway.
We weren't sure what he was going to do.
So now this week, you know, O, who was claimed off waivers,
you know, a few weeks ago, right?
He wants to run the whole show.
Yeah, but I'm Goostov-Forzling.
I'm Gustav-Forsling.
You're Gustav-Forzling.
All right.
So he's going to be his Gustav Forzling.
But he just wants, my impression of this,
is he makes a call, no back-and-forth at all,
no conversation where Al's brother and I have been on this journey since week one.
We've been riding this wave since September.
I don't think it's unreasonable for us to pick his brain
on where he's going with this pit.
No, and here's the thing.
What is his angle, right?
Like, there's analytics GMs.
There's guys that are really savvy.
Like, Hayes, you're a gambling guy, you're a football guy through and through.
Al's brother is the information guy.
What, like, oh, what is your angle?
Just, I got a hunch, and this is my gut feel, and you've got to go with it.
I'm the only one that's been in an arena of any significance, and I get a feel.
I get a feel.
You get a feel.
Cup final O2 means he knows who's going to win the championship games.
Oh, it's also 800 and something regular season games.
I just get a feel for this type of stuff, a vibe, a smell.
All right.
He's a vibe guy.
Vibe guy has got to be like third on the list of the hierarchy of making these picks, right?
It's like analytics one, you're a life or two, and then vibes got to be three.
vibe guy is floating around to wherever the hot spot is right vibe vibe guy is not a foxhole guy
vibe guy is not putting in time and effort vibe guy is where's the hot spot the second that place
cools down vibe guys out of there right vibe guy's going somewhere else he's going wherever the
crowd takes him so vibe guy is going to try to save our season our and our basically we had
one of the great seasons in sports history some people are saying it's the greatest
and we need to follow and finish it off for the great playoff,
and we're behind the eight ball right now.
But we'll get to that pick tomorrow.
Okay, we'll get to that pick tomorrow.
I think Al's brother, reasonable.
Just say, where are we at?
Where's your head at?
And we'll close it and we'll figure that out tomorrow.
We've got a big one today.
We're giving away tickets to the Leaf game tomorrow.
All right?
So we're going to tell you how you can win the tickets to see Mitch Marner's return.
You want to be at that game.
That's one I think a lot of people are hoping to get into.
It coincides with Jay's tickets going on sale today.
And I guess that's been an absolute rat race trying to get into, you know, the bigger, bigger series, right?
When the Yankees roll through town, when the Mets roll through town and Bo Bichette is here.
Canada Day, Bobichette, New York Mets, I'm guessing those tickets sold out in like five seconds.
You know, it's going to be fun to see.
I'm intrigued to see.
You're not going to sell out every single game.
You know, 81 home games.
Yes, they went to the World Series last year.
yes, there's a ton of hype and there should be.
I don't know.
You know, midweek, Tampa's in town.
Is there 44,000 people at the dome?
We'll find out.
I mean, that would be great.
But the hype for the season.
The answer is no.
The answer is no.
And listen, Yankee Stadium's not selling out.
Dodgers Stadium's not selling out.
No.
You get the week.
It gets the Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
You've got some good opponents in town.
You're going to pack the place.
Yes.
Midweek games with Tampa's and Baltimore's
around. It's going to be 15, 20,000 people. That's just the way it works. I think it'll be more than
1520. I think that'll be the Sino. I think it's closer to 2830, 32,000, which is still a great
crowd, great crowd for midweek. And again, I don't benefit from this. I don't care. I'm just projecting
what I think the buzz is going to look like, you know, once we get to the season. But the tickets
are on sale. And again, we're giving away tickets for the Marner return tomorrow. So tune in this
hour to find out, you know, how and when you can win those.
Really, let me ask you something, the way you just corrected me in the most
ridiculous way.
If you were sitting there and someone said, it looks like there's 20,000, do you think
you would chirp back and say, I think there would be 28,000?
Yes.
I think 8,000, for starters, you said 15 or 20.
Dude.
And I said 28 to 30.
20 was the high mark, and you were like, I think around 28 to 32.
Yeah, that's right.
You're masters, and I'm Matthews in this situation.
I don't want to hear it.
I don't want to hear 15 to 20,000.
28 to 32 is big.
The difference between Frankie, I keep going to you,
as if you're like chat, GBT.
Hang on a second.
I want to play a game with you.
I want Doogie to get crowd shots of the majority of the building,
knowing the people that are in the building,
and I want you to tell me how many are in there.
Okay.
We can do that.
That's an assignment for Doogie.
like doogie's got to look that up moving forward here well i'm not doing it that's not my job
you know what hayes will do hayes will do this in if he's at that game in that situation
that's a back and forth with a guy for two innings where you kind of guesstimate how many people
would be in each section like that one looks like it could be about 2000 okay and if you do the
math and you go all the way around the stadium like i think that's that's how i just wanted to
apologize for saying 20 instead of 20 you want me to harry
croma stadium i'll harry croma stadium i show me different shots of the dome and i will tell you
you know within reason within a thousand you text me when you have a couple of different shots and you
tell me the number that's in the building you have to know though this is going to be difficult
it's very different to do i don't know if dude it's like the jelly beans in the jar thing like
if you're if you can do this you got to find jelly beans in a jar put your guess in and start
winning some cash i'm telling you i think i could nail the dome the dome's
been around for 37 years now, I could nail the dome's attendance.
Nail it.
Now, it's changed over the last couple of years because they've taken seats out, right?
And they've added some different things and they've added some room.
But if you can give me a panoramic view of the dome where I can see all of the people,
you know, because that's where it gets a little sneaky.
If you cut off the left field, well, then that's going to affect my jelly bean count.
but I think I could nail it within a couple grand.
And I think you're way off.
And I think that's insulting to suggest 15,000 people.
15.
It's the most irrelevant thing of all time.
It is.
But it's talent I think I have.
I can just imagine if you were rolling single like downtown, you just fired it out there.
I can guess the amount of people in that dome.
Five seconds.
That'd be on my Tinder profile.
Yeah.
6-2, because you've got to apparently put that down.
6-2.
and I could nail the amount of people in a dome for any game all season long.
But if you're on one of those apps and you're above six feet and that's not like the first thing that's in your bio,
you're crazy.
Yes.
Crazy.
Yeah.
That's the first thing.
It's got to be six one.
How much line goes on though?
How many guys are little twerps and they put six two and their little weasel five-eighters?
Yeah.
Hight cat fishing.
Hight cat fishing.
That's male cat fishing.
I guarantee you it was a massive problem.
All the time.
I think it's the go-to male version of the catfish.
I'm 6'3 and you show up and you look like Tyrell Hatton.
You know, it just doesn't work that way.
Speaking of Tyrell, I got a great couple quotes from him.
I'll tell you later about what he did over the holidays and how he was operating.
And he's a beauty, Tyrell Hatton.
I'd like to see him back on the PGA tour.
But anyway, tickets for the Marno game.
tomorrow in Vegas and Boston
tonight which should benefit the Leafs
because they're going to need it. It sounds like
Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who left
the game early last night, that's a
big strain on it, defense.
He played a minute 50,
I think, last night. You know, a guy goes
out that early in the game and
you know, Detroit can move
and Detroit is now beating them four times
this year. Detroit's four-no against the Leafs.
But Ekman-Larsen likely
won't play tomorrow, and it sounds like Brandon
Carlo, according to Chris Johnston, is
also nicked up and may not play tomorrow.
So Tanna, we know, is in playing.
Willie's not playing.
And if Ekman Larson and Carlo are out,
Matthew Nyes is at 50%.
That's what he looks like to me.
He can't move.
You know, he's really, he's struggling out there.
He's trying.
I credit him because he's battling and he's playing and they need them.
But that's a lot of like important pieces that could be out of the lineup
with Vegas in town tomorrow night.
What do you think?
Like, it's happening all around the league.
Obviously, Toronto's getting hammered right now,
but when you have this schedule, this is inevitable.
Like, you've got any kind of veteran presence on your team
every other night, back-to-backs, basically once a week.
You're going to have guys go down like this.
But we've talked about Toronto's depth all year.
How are they going to recover?
Like, how are they going to win games with this roster that they're going to have attention?
Goaltending and goal scoring.
Yeah, but you're going to recover.
You're asking a lot out of 34 and 60.
Yeah.
Yeah, but he tweeted out last night.
It almost seems, I don't know how you phrased it,
but we're venturing into unreasonable term,
asking Joseph Wall and Austin Matthews to step up in these moments
and kind of carry the load.
That's what it feels like.
I thought Matthews was really good again last night.
He was.
Tons of opportunities and chances.
You can feel it like with Willie not plan and nize at, you know,
whatever it is.
50, 60, 70 percent.
Tavares needs the Olympic break.
You know, I think John, and this happens to him, I bet you it down the stretch,
Tavaros will be awesome.
I'll bet you he comes out of the Olympic break flying.
You give him a break, his body resets.
I expect big things out of him down the stretch, and I think he'll supply them.
Last night was another example without Marner.
I know we're 50 games in to not having him, but it's a scenario where he could have broken
a game open in the third period.
You know, it's a little bit close.
It's 1-1.
Maybe he makes a play.
But it's Matthews flying.
The other guys are trying to keep up.
And Frankie, I think it's Joseph Wall and Hilda Bee.
And maybe Stollars when he returns.
Stolars the Savior.
It could be a savior scenario for Stolars.
Last night's game, for the most part,
I thought they generated some pretty good chances.
John Gibson has been one of the best goalies in the NHL
basically since December 1st.
And Detroit,
When you know it, best team in the NHL since December 1st.
It's funny how those two things kind of coincide.
Goaltender's going to have to steal you a few.
At least Austin Matthews is playing better now, and it looks like he's more like himself.
But now, you're asking a lot right now, but the chances were there last night.
I didn't think that was like a dull performance by them.
I thought Gibson had to make a lot of like really quality saves.
And if that's not Gibson and that, if that's someone else who's having a bad night,
that's probably two more, you know, an extra point in the bank, but it's not.
And now it's like, Hayes, all those games early in the season that they squandered away,
well, this is when push comes to shove, chips are down.
Like you would have a little more currency in the bank at that point.
Yeah, this is what I think we've all been anticipating.
Like the first 20 games, they had a really soft schedule playing, you know, teams that were inferior teams,
a lot of home games, and they just didn't take advantage of that.
and now it's, you know, Vegas, Colorado, Buffalo,
you've got to go through Edmonton coming up.
And, you know, they've got to seven games until the break.
They've got to basically survive up between now and the break.
You know, you've got to be, we've been talking about this for it feels like at least a month.
I think at the break you've got to be within two or three points.
If you're within two or three points of the playoffs,
then you're in the race down the stretch.
You're going to have to get hot.
You're still going to have to rely on the same guys.
The goaltending is going to have to be great down the playoffs.
the stretch. It's going to have to be. I would
presume Stolaris will return by then.
If Stolars and we'll get a good break
and their bodies are fresh,
hopefully the two of them can coincide
and get on a heater and you can get in.
How many tilts are left before
the break? Seven. Seven games.
Seven games. And that includes
a western swing.
So you got
Vegas tomorrow, Colorado Sunday,
Buffalo Tuesday, and then you go out to
Seattle, Calgary, Vancouver,
Edmonton. So,
You've got winnable games there.
Like Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, winnable games.
Edmonton's going to be tough, but it'll be the last game before the break,
and there'll be a lot of emotion, and it's always a built-up game.
It's a fun game to play.
There's also a lot of private birds at the airport.
A lot of private birds.
Both ways, though.
Everyone's got, like, one foot out the door in that game.
That's a weird one, man.
You know which game is actually not really a pushover anymore, that Buffalo game?
I did their game last week.
Man, they're good.
They're legit.
I think they're going to make the playoffs.
I think this is the year that Buffalo makes the playoffs.
I'm willing to declare it at this point.
Okay.
Feels that way.
And Detroit, like, their roster is still, it's perplexing to me a little bit
because you got Larkin who scores an overtime.
You know, De Brinket can play.
Raymond can play.
Like, those guys can move.
They can all skate.
They're all skillful.
And then you got, like, the JVRs and the canes and the cops and the Appleton's.
It's like, oh, good different players, though,
different parts of their career, but they've built up the defense.
And guess what?
They're getting a save.
And they're getting a save.
Gibson was great last night.
And I agree with your assessment, Frankie, through 40 minutes.
I thought, you know, in the third, the Leafs, I don't know what they were doing.
They never had the puck in the third.
No.
You know, they never, they were outshot, what was it, 12-2 or something in the third.
They lost the draws for the most part in overtime, which is a huge part of the way that plays out now.
You've got to win the draw, so you get possession.
But I thought for the first 40, you're right.
You know, I thought, you know, there were a number of guys that had quality opportunities
and Gibson just robbed them.
But then in the third, it was like, hold on for dear life, get a point.
And, okay, but Detroit got two on you.
And now Detroit's nine up and likely gone, you know.
Like Detroit's pretty good.
Yeah.
You talk about them building up their back end.
That more excited, like, look at that play.
What a play.
He makes on Eastern County.
Basically, like, he basically just bullied the young.
kid and I get it. Cowan's a rookie. He'll learn from that.
But that's, that guy's a bulldozer, man. He's the only defenseman, or one of the only
defensemen. There's only two guys last year to have 200 hits and 40 points. It was cider and
McKenzie Weeger. And now they've added like the 77 next to him, Edmondson. You watch that
guy. He's like a one-man breakout. They got some good pieces. It feels like they've turned the
corner and now they've got the goal-tending to go with it and they're playing a good team game.
That's, you know, they've taken the strides. They need to take.
that's a coachable moment for Easton Cowan.
I think that's something that'll stick out for him
because there's a bunch of different elements.
I've told you guys many times about my experience
being in front of the net and Eric Lindross
basically just grabbing me and chucking me in the corner
and then I was lying on my back and I watched him score a goal.
Like in a split second, you kind of got to know who's on the ice at all times.
Whether it's a guy that'll knock your block off like Scott Stevens when I played,
Or just, when you're the last man back like that, basically for anybody that doesn't know what that,
like it's just you're the last man standing.
There's no, the only line of defense left is the goaltender.
So when you're the last man back, you never want to turn it into a one-on-one situation.
And especially trying to forearm shiver a guy that's 6-4, 2.30, that would be like me trying to do that to Erie.
It's just a stupid play.
And especially for Easton Cowan, in that league, he's not going to strong-arm.
anybody. He's got to use his speed, his skill, and his passing ability. So doing that was silly.
You got to know who's out there, and you've got to hear that side or breathing down your neck,
and you just say, I'm not turning this into a one-on-one, and there's no way in hell I'm going
to strong-arm this guy, because it's not going to work, and that's what happened. So it's
not about him getting bigger or stronger, or it was just using your head, knowing who's on the
ice and flat out being better.
He doesn't need to go in the gym and start cracking iron.
You got to know who's on the ice.
You've got to be smarter and you got to be better.
And just never let that happen again.
Because you can't turn that play
into a one-on-one.
No, not when you have possession.
You know, that can't happen.
And my read on it, oh, and Frankie, you tell me if I'm wrong,
I think he thought, well, Sider's not going to chase me here.
Like that, I'll just go out in the neutral zone
because everyone just lets you go out for a cruise.
And Sider said, screw that.
I'm on you, and I'm going to push you around.
And, you know, it's an unfortunate play for a rookie because, you know,
Willie's probably on the ice if he's healthy.
But I think he thinks Sider will just cross back and doesn't and buries them.
And he's thinking.
What do you think he did in two hours down the road every time and overtime?
Exactly.
In London, he'd go for a cruise.
And he can't.
And what do you think Sider is thinking, he goes, I see this number 53.
I haven't seen this number in this league up until this year.
I'm not going to let this guy off the hook.
Look, right?
Like, if that's 34, maybe Cider looks at it and says, okay, I'll hang back a little bit,
let them do their regroup, no problem.
It's like that's a rookie.
I'm all over it.
Exactly.
You've got to be careful with 34.
With 53, I'm going to make him mistake, and that's what happened.
You know, it's a dangerous game.
You put a rookie on the ice in a situation like that.
He scored O.T. winners before, you know, and he's struggling a little bit right now.
I think Barubei, though, is looking at his bench.
He's like, I can't play nice with open ice.
Like you just won't be able to keep up.
Willie's not available.
So, you know, they're trying to find different options.
But, yeah, definitely a learning opportunity for Cowan last night.
And now you reset and you got Vegas tomorrow.
And, you know, Joseph Wall was really good, really good last night.
And I would assume he plays tomorrow.
Guess he plays Sunday, you know, is he just going to play up?
Oh, don't get crazy, Hazy Bee.
I know.
I hear you.
But like Vegas tomorrow, Colorado Sunday, man.
Like, you got to have your best stuff.
Yeah.
And if Ekman Larson's out and Carlos out, you're depleted.
So you've got to hold on for dear life the next two games.
Find a way to get a couple of points.
This is where you need Joseph Wall to have that just getting over the hump moment
where if you start a bunch of games in a row,
it's not like we're just looking at this thing saying,
well, when's the injury coming?
And why do we have to be so aware of it?
Like, can you put together a stretch of games here because he couldn't earlier in the season, clearly,
and now he's had to do it again, or he might have to do it again.
Like, as a goalie, as a player as an athlete, will you ever have that moment where it's not this thing is looming
because you've started X amount of games in a row?
I just, I wonder if that can be the case for him here.
Let's, I know the least are hoping for it, for sure.
And, you know, a lot of great games in the NHG.
You got Sid in Edmonton, Penn's Oilers tonight, Sid McDaniel.
and Skinner's not going to play, but Skinner's been red hot lately.
You know, and Pittsburgh's still in a playoff spot.
Pittsburgh's competing.
You know, we keep talking with the trade deadline and what could happen
or what could not happen.
And I think Pitt looks at it and goes, why would we trust the Islanders are going to stay in Washington?
It's lost to Vancouver last night.
You know, so why would you be fearful of them?
You're not fearful in New Jersey.
The Rangers stink.
You know, like someone's got to grab the two and three seeds in that Metro division.
and Pittsburgh.
Beware of those teams that stink, man.
Coming down the stretch, they are going to cause a lot of problems.
A lot of problems.
Well, first of all, I all still think they're in it.
Yeah.
Let me ask you guys this.
Who's more disappointing, New Jersey or Washington,
as far as teams that aren't in the playoffs right now?
Because both those teams were supposed to be way better,
and Pittsburgh and the Islanders are staring down at them right now.
I'd say wash because of the year they had last year.
you know like new jersey they might lean on some injuries and there's been some
i wouldn't say controversy but like the quin hughes pursuit and all that it seems like it's
kind of ugly you know like there it seems more of a soap opera where Washington is just
kind of cruising around and not playing well you know like they're they're still in the hunt
they went on a heater too like they had a bit of a kind of a rough start then they won on a massive
heater and now they've kind of stumbled where it's like
I don't know.
They're hit or miss, man.
I don't know what the hell they are.
They're hard to figure out.
Big time.
Big time.
Again, you lose to Vancouver.
They lost 11 in a row.
Dude, Vancouver's that team.
You're in the locker room after and you're like, guys, we just lost to these guys.
They lose every other night.
Every night.
And we wheel in here and we take the Alcom on.
Yeah.
That's the, that's the players only meeting.
They're the new players only meeting team.
They might be.
You know what's crazy about, you know what's crazy about Washington's
little, you know, scuffle here is that Tom Wilson goes out of the lineup just after New Year's,
like January 3rd, I think. He came back in that loss of Vancouver, but without Tom Wilson,
it's like they couldn't win two games in a row. Like that guy, you know, I know we talk about
him a lot for being big, strong, menacing, all that kind of stuff. It feels like that's the
guy that stirs the drink on that team. Without him, they didn't have any juice. Yeah, he's their
identity now, right? It was Ovi forever and Ovi's still there. But,
But Tom Wilson has been a leading charge for them.
All right, Bruce Boudreau coming up on the Caps, on the Leafs.
If you're Craig Baruba here, how do you get through the next few games?
If Ackman Larson's out, if Carlos out, how do you approach the goaltending situation?
And, you know, you're seven games away from the Olympic break.
Do you just floor it until you get there, knowing you've got two and a half, three weeks break after that?
We'll catch up with Bruce, get his take on that.
The insider's coming up today.
I've got a list after Bo Bichette had his presser yesterday, right?
Top priority for Bose to win down in New York,
leaving a team that was just in the World Series.
But his top priorities went, not $42 million a year.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
It's top priorities to win.
How could he not sign that contract?
Of course.
I don't blame him at all.
Dude, he's playing.
You know what he's playing third base next?
Yes.
He never played third.
Never.
So they just offered, they gave a guy 42 sheets to say,
By the way, do you want to play third?
He's going to de-h and he's going to move around.
Like they've got a weird infield down in New York.
And they just acquired Freddie Peralta yesterday.
It was not obviously a third baseman,
but he had a great season starting in Milwaukee.
That's another issue with baseball right now.
You can yell and scream about the Dodgers and the Mets, and I get it.
But if you're Milwaukee, why not just pay Peralta?
You just won 97 games.
You know, he just had a great year.
Now he's owed money and you're like, get rid of him.
Like that's an issue too.
Dodgers paying guys, sure, but you not, like other teams just simply not being willing to pay anybody that has success, that's a problem in baseball.
So it's not just about the cap.
There better be a floor, too, where teams are like, you got to pay.
If you're an owner in Major League Baseball, you've got to spend some money.
So we'll get into that a little bit later this afternoon as well.
Overdrive continues.
TSN 1050 and up on YouTube Live.
I'm Dylan Playfair.
And I'm Tyler Smith.
We're putting loneliness.
in the penalty box by talking to some of our favorite athletes about the importance of friendship.
This is bromance.
Bromance is brought to you by Charm Diamond Centers, proudly Canadian-owned and operator.
Charm has been part of your love stories and bromances for over 50 years.
And you can find Bromance on the IHeart Radio Network or wherever you get your podcast.
All right, Hasey B.
Got your first pick.
Jelly bean?
This is the jelly bean pick, the Rogers Center, you're saying?
You want to do it after, Brucey?
I'm good.
I'm good.
If you want to post it.
Joe, let this guy see this pick.
ALDS New York Yankees.
Oh.
Show them the pick.
What?
Well, it's obviously sold out of it.
It's the DS, dude.
It's 43,000 or whatever.
I don't even need to see the pick.
You can't do a picture where it's a playoff game.
Doogie, you're a moron.
Yeah, you can't do a playoff game.
Like, obviously.
Doogie, I want the Minnesota Twins on a two.
Tuesday.
Exactly.
You need the twins on a Tuesday in May, and then I'll tell you within a couple grand of what I
think it is.
Flash the pick anyways.
Just Flash the pick anyway.
Let's talk to you after.
Let's talk to a real thing.
I don't think we can flash the pick because it's obvious, Frankie.
It's got it.
The answer is 44,000.
You didn't even need to see it.
That's what kind of producer we're looking at here.
That's embarrassing.
And can't be the divisional series of Yankees.
Like, come on.
I was there for the games.
I was there for the games.
If I was with Doogie right now.
Dukey would be getting...
Doogie would get a swirly, man.
Yeah, it would be possibly a Bill O'Reilly scenario.
Possibly.
We'll do it live.
We'll do it live.
All right, quickly, I want to throw this out there
because we're giving away tickets.
Leefs, Golden Knights, tomorrow.
Mitch Marner coming back, right?
Here's your opportunity to land tickets to tomorrow's game.
Again, between the Leafs and the Gold Knights.
Trivia question.
To answer, you've got to text us the answer with your...
your name. 1050-50-50 is what you have to text.
All right.
10-50-50 with your name and the answer to this question.
Which TSN member was a teammate of Mitch Marners?
Who at TSN was a teammate of Mitch Marners, right?
Text us 1050-50 with that answer and your name.
Dugie is going to pick the winner and we'll announce it later this afternoon.
and Duke you will reach out.
Hopefully it's JP.
JP might be better at this.
But 1050-50 with your name and the answer to that question
to win tickets to see Leaves Gold Nights and Mitch Martyr's return tomorrow night.
Let's bring in another esteemed member of TSN, our good friend, Bruce Boudreau, joining us now.
How you doing, Bruce?
Hey, I'm doing okay.
I was not a member.
I was not a teammate, though, but I'll take the tickets if you want.
Those are must-house.
Like, what are you, you're a Toronto guy.
You're born-a-raised here, Leaf fan, played for the team.
What kind of reception do you expect Mitch to get tomorrow night?
Well, I hope.
I hope it's the same kind of reception Jonathan Tays got in Chicago.
I mean, he has contributed quite an awful lot to the Maple Leaf.
I mean, I'm sure the playoffs haven't gone that good,
but for 82 games every scene every year,
He's up there with 90 plus points, exciting player.
I remember when the first game that I coached against him,
he had like six breakways.
He didn't score any, but I mean, he gets open.
I thought he was a superstar from day one.
And I hope the Leafs appreciate him like that,
or the Toronto people appreciate him like that,
and not the guy that was used as a scapegoat or was warranted
for bad playoff runs.
He was a great,
great Toronto Maple Leaf.
I hope he gets the reward that
the Toronto Maple Leaf fans can give,
and they're good at it when they want to be.
Bruce, we know, I think we all know
that's probably not going to happen.
Just from the vibe I got in
Vegas, where he was in his home building
and the Toronto fans adventured out there,
they were giving it to him. So it's going to
be interesting, and what's going to be interesting
is, like, the tribute
video, where if you played
two games for a team, you get a
tribute video now, which
is completely ridiculous, but this guy, if they're booing his ass off,
it's going to be uncomfortable for the video to go up where it's going to be like,
oh, now I'm going to cheer you, but then after that I'm going to boo you.
Yeah, that would be uncomfortable.
That's why I'm hoping Toronto doesn't boo.
Like, I mean, don't you think he was a great player for 10 years here or nine years?
I think he deserves more than booing.
And you know what?
I don't think anybody really knows whether he wanted to leave or outpriced himself or what the,
what the, where he was used as somebody that, well, we have to change the core four and he's the one that's got to go type thing.
I don't know if anybody knows the true answer yet, but I just thought he was a great player for the Maple Leafs,
and that's why I think he should be cheered and thanked.
Bruce, if you're coaching and you're in the room, whether it's, you know, a player or coach,
what do you do in this situation?
and you try and get him through this game.
You know, there's going to be some guys maybe put some money up on the board,
try and really get the win for him.
But, like, other than that, like, what are you trying to do for Mitch
to help him get through a game like that?
Well, I'm trying to keep it as normal as possible.
I'm not going out of my way and doing anything,
but he should put about $10 grand up on the board himself, I think,
because I think he'll want to win this game pretty badly.
to more night but
I know that's
hey when Oveskin signed his
$120 million deal
he put 10 grand on the board
that night and so I'm
thinking Mitch has got his making more
he can do the same thing but
I would try to keep it as normal
as possible
you know like I mean
like he's going to have so many friends
and family in the
arena but not
try to over emphasize how
important it is to Mitch when you're talking about the game plan or anything else.
Just try to keep it as if it's just a normal day.
Bruce, the Maple Leafs, and it didn't really dawn on me until yesterday.
There's only 30-something games left for a lot of these teams.
Like, it's going to go fast.
It's a sprint to the Olympic break, and then it's going to be a sprint after.
The Leafs, they certainly dug themselves a hole with a favorable schedule at home,
and they did not take advantage of it.
And they got some tough opponents.
They've got injuries.
like how tough of a grind do they have here to make the playoffs?
Well, I think it's a tough grind.
I mean, when they went through that unbeaten streak just recently,
and you still look at how many teams they had to climb.
I mean, I'd look at the standings every day.
And now every game they lose,
whether it's a one-point game or a two-point game,
it seems like other teams are gaining.
and I mean I think they're going to they got to get to 13 games over 500 I think as a minimum to make it
and but like I do look at the standings every single morning and I'm looking and I'm going man they're still there
they haven't jumped up any anymore and no matter how good they're playing and eventually you know I mean I look at these injuries
if you know they they've their defense is depleted and thank goodness that their goaltending has been
pretty good in the last 12 or 13 games.
But, I mean, my goodness, that can only stay for so long.
So I'm a little, I'm, I'm ready to see what Brad Trelevine's going to do.
Because, I mean, if OEL is out for any length of time, and, you know, TANF is out for any length of time,
who knows if Carlo, I don't know, I'm not in Toronto, so I don't know if he's skated today,
but he looked like he got hurt the other night.
So, I mean, it's, their defense is pretty decimated.
I think they have to make some kind of move because it's crunch time.
I think they got to start playing at a 650 pace just to make the playoffs
because I think the top three teams are pretty well settled in the Atlantic right now.
With Bruce Boudraulte.
And you know, you bring up Brad Trithving.
He's in an interesting spot right now because of all these injuries, because of the position
they're in, they don't have a ton of prospects and picks.
You know, their pick this year is in Boston.
And it's top five protected, I believe.
So, you know, that complicates things.
You know, the guy who hired him, Brandon Shanahan, isn't here anymore.
You know, there's a lot in the air in terms of what tree living can do and what he might do.
You know, if you're a coach, do you take that into consideration?
Like, what would the interaction be, you think, with Brouba and Tray Living on a daily basis?
Well, I think they're talking on a daily basis, but, you know, Craig is not stupid.
but either. He knows what the salary cap situation is for the Leafs. And he's probably going around
and saying, Brad, like, I mean, if these are long-term, any way we can get this guy and what would
you give for this guy type thing? And, you know, I mean, I think it's just casual conversation
between the two of them on a daily basis. I know I used to meet every morning with a couple of
my GMs and we talk hockey. And I remember just asking Chuck Flesher,
or say, Chuck, can we talk hockey like you mean today?
And so we'd get to meet and we'd just, you know, throw our ideas out.
And I think between the two of them, Craig knows better than anybody what they need
because he's seeing them every day.
He sees them more than anybody.
But Brad's the one that's going to have to pull the trigger eventually.
Brucey, what do you do now in net, if you're the Toronto Maple Leafs?
Like they went on this stretch of games when they had Joseph Wall play
and it felt like consecutive nights all the time.
and eventually it led to an injury.
Now they have the Olympic break coming up.
Do you look at that and say,
I'm going to try and run this guy as much as I can,
knowing that he's going to have a break,
or you still have to be cautious about that?
Well, never being a goalie,
I think you're always cautious.
In the back-to-backs, you probably don't play him,
but if Stolars ever gets healthy,
I don't know how he did when he went down to the Marley's.
I haven't checked if he's even played a game yet,
but I think that's probably the one,
one chip that they've got to make a trade for somebody good if they wanted to do it is
one of the two goals. He's not Hildeby. I don't think he'd bring in anywhere near as much,
but, I mean, one of those two. And I think they're both really good when they're healthy,
and they've both had great times at certain parts of the year. So, but I wouldn't kill Joseph
Wall by playing him all three games in a three-and-four-night stance that'd have to play.
the other play Hildeby or Solar, whoever's available.
Yeah, it's going to be an interesting few days here because they're at home.
Vegas tomorrow, that'll be an emotional game.
Colorado Sunday, Buffalo on Tuesday, all three teams, you know, obviously really good right now.
And then, you know, you look at the eastern, it appears as if it's a wild card pursuit for the leaves.
You know, I would agree with you.
Tampa's getting in as a top three.
Detroit's now nine points clear of them.
And the HABs, you know, have been really ten days.
and they find ways to win and pick up points,
and they got a decent buffer on the Leafs,
not as significant.
But if it is a wild card race,
then it brings in the other division where, you know,
it's just not nearly as strong, you know,
with the Islanders in Pittsburgh and Philly
and the Capitals who lost the Vancouver last night.
And I know you're close with that team when you cover that team.
What's up with that division and, you know,
any of these teams going to catch up with Carolina
and make it a fight, or is everyone just going to kind of stumble in with the Metro division?
Well, I think if you look at the Metro, Carolina is the best team.
But none of the other teams, like on any given night, look really good.
Like, I mean, you don't sit there, and it's not like when the Leafs are playing Colorado,
oh, we're up against a wagon tonight, you know, this is going to be a tough one.
I mean, you can look down, and any time you play one of those teams, you go,
hey, you know, we can beat them, like, or they can beat us.
I mean, they're all, the reason it's so close is they're all very close together.
And, I mean, is Florida going to make a run yet?
Like, I mean, we remember a couple years ago when they,
when Paul Maurice went nuts in Toronto the one night,
and then they went on the run and made the playoffs and ended up in the finals.
But, I mean, we keep thinking that if they get anybody back
and they just got to Kachup back, they're going to make a run,
and they're further behind as well.
Washington, I don't know, they've lost four in a row,
and they play Calgary, Edmonton back to back tomorrow and Saturday.
And boy, you lose a few of those games, and now you're sitting way out of the playoffs.
And there's so many teams to jump.
It becomes difficult.
I know I tried to, when we were losing and looking for a playoffs,
but I tried to stay in my own lane and then just look at what we had to do
and not try to look, oh, we've got to win five out of six.
short-term goals and then eventually hopefully you can get there.
Great catching up with you. Bruce, as always.
We'll do it again soon. Thank you for this.
All right, you guys take care.
Thank you for having me.
There he is, our good friend, Bruce Boudreau.
Yeah, someone's getting in.
There's two spots up for grabs in that Metro Division.
I don't know who it's going to be as of right now.
I don't think anybody does.
Think about the league, though.
You think about, obviously Colorado has separated themselves as like the team in the
NHL, but shouldn't there at least be 10 of those teams in a 32-team league?
Like, 10 is like not asking a whole lot, and there's not.
There's not even close to 10, like dynamite wagon.
No.
I mean, I think Dallas, Minnesota, Tampa would put their hands up right now.
Okay, there's four total.
Vegas would.
Go to Carolina in there.
Carolina?
Yeah.
Is Edmonton?
I don't know.
They haven't proven it, like, over the course of the year, Edmonton.
They haven't won three in a row at any point.
I don't know.
My overall overarching kind of kind of times, like in a 32-team league and you can't say there's 10 heater teams.
That just goes back to what we talk about all the time about the product.
It's not a parody.
Imagine what it's going to be with two more teams added.
Go ahead and get to Houston and Atlanta, and you're going to be watching the East Coast Hockey League with three good players on each team.
Buddy, isn't that what we've seen here now?
Tampa had a run where they were the best team.
No, it could touch them.
Why?
You just can't, because they have the secret sauce and you don't,
and everyone else is jumbled together.
Florida, same thing.
So what's it going to be now?
Is it going to be Colorado goes on a run for three years
where they're untouchable because they got the secret sauce
and everyone else is jumbled together?
It's kind of what it feels like.
One team at the top, a couple at the bottom,
everyone else just right there.
Yeah, and that's, I think, what Bettman always wanted
and envisioned because there's like 25 teams still in a
playoff fund.
You know, maybe more than that.
There's some delusional teams that are way out that could still tell themselves,
well, maybe we can make it work, you know?
And I just, I don't, it's not going to happen.
Like, they haven't adjusted how many teams make the playoffs, right?
It's still 16.
It's been 16 for a long time.
So that math is not changed.
Hasey, I want you to, before we go to break, I want you to take another peak.
This is a random September day against the Mets.
Go from the bridge.
Let's show the sky and see if the jelly bean counter can get this one.
September against the Mets.
Oh, that's not a great crowd.
That looks, that's a September crowd.
This can't be.
Versus the Mets.
I want a number.
I guess I don't need a year on this, but I, that looks like their new stadium.
Well, they have the Renault.
It's the dome, you idiot.
I know.
But I'm trying to figure out, I know, I'm just saying.
Like, I'm going to say, I'm going to say, I'm going to say 195.
Wrong.
29,000.
29,000.
I can't see behind the plate, though.
I was going to say 28,000.
I was going to come out of my mouth.
28,000.
Brutal picture, dude.
Dude, no, you got to show behind a plate.
You told me you could just graze around and say.
I said panoramic view of the whole, you, though, everyone sits behind the plate.
Here's one more for you guys.
This is a random June day against the D-backs.
Again, this is tough.
That is a lot of people there, actually.
That's a lot of people.
That's, because look at the 500 level.
I'll let Hayesie go first.
Would you shut up, Hayes?
You don't know what you're talking about.
33,000.
I'm going to go higher.
I'm going to say 37,000.
Wrong, 27,000.
Six for 35.
Okay, I'm close enough.
There you're right.
But again, brutal.
You guys are not.
understanding, you need a view of the whole stadium.
I need like a...
Dude, do you want doogie during these games to fly a drone around?
A drone.
I need a drone access.
The doogie drone.
Everyone is seated behind the player.
You said that you're an attendance expert and you cannot guess these.
But again, dude, the first one was brutal because you missed half the stadium and the most
premium seats are behind the plate.
That's where the most people are sitting.
You're wrong.
The first one was the most moronic thing that's ever.
That looked like a very soft sked.
Bad pick, bad angles.
No, the first one you're forgetting was a sellout because Dugie picked a playoff game.
That one I didn't even need to see.
That's a fireball offense, by the way.
I nailed that.
I nailed that one.
All right, the insider's coming up.
We've got a list still to come.
Might sprinkle in some arbitrations that we didn't get to yesterday.
A little arbitration on the fly, right?
We're tracking what's going on down in Palm Springs.
We're Shefflers back on the course.
and I've got some quotes from Tyrell Hatton about what he was doing over the holidays.
I think you guys who want to hear those.
We'll get to that.
We've got to mention that William Shatner picture, too.
We should have a full breakdown of what Bill Shatner was doing in his car recently.
Dude, you've got to show us.

Who's ready to rock?
All right, we are tracking towards the NHL trade deadline,
but the NBA trade deadline will be here in just a couple of weeks.
And there's a report that now the...
Street clothes in his camp are demanding a trade out of Dallas.
You've got to be kidding me.
Do you imagine having the stones to demand the trade when you're hurt?
Like he's hurt.
He's had surgery.
He's barely played.
They sunk like a stone since they acquired him.
But we'll see.
Dallas is probably like fine.
You know, just get out of here or whatever.
But the Raptors went through Sacramento and beat the Kings last night.
Big back to back for them.
They beat the Warriors, beat the Kings.
and they are tied to Subonis, you know,
and maybe they try to acquire him
and, you know, who would go out the door?
We'll see it could be R.J. Barrett, who's been really good this year.
I got to, like, just, I read just a quick comment from Josh,
and he was like, they're willing to part with some kind of combination of Perthal,
Barrett, quickly, and they're like,
Purdle's injuries are, like, sending off alarm bells within the front office,
and it's like, okay,
if they're sending out alarm bells for this front office,
isn't another one having the same alarm bells about this guy?
You would think.
Like, it's the same as street clothes.
Yeah.
Which just, God, it goes back to even acquiring that guy.
Like, that is insane.
Crazy.
Well, I think they're circling the Kings because, you know,
the Kings are such a disaster.
Like, Jay-Lew sent out a thread after the game last night
that was very scathing of the Sacramento Kings,
but very deserved, you know?
Like, very deserved.
but like Josh really, I think he hit the nail on the head about just how big of a disaster it is.
Like they've just been a disaster forever.
Like they just exist in the league and it's, you know, the wraps went through there.
They had that one year flash.
One year flash a couple of years ago where they were light in the beam and that's it.
That's it.
Mike Brown was their coach.
It was all good.
And then, nope, see you later.
Done.
Back to irrelevance.
All right.
Insiders coming up.
We'll show you the William Shatner paying a full breakdown.
So you've got to be watching live on TSN4 or YouTube live or whatever.
And again, we'll look ahead to Mitch Marner's return and we'll announce a winner.
We're giving away tickets to the game tomorrow night.
You've got a text as 1050-50 with your name and the name of a TSN employee that was once teammates with Mitch Marner.
All right.
Hour two coming up, Overdrive continues.
TSN 1050 and on the TSNM out.
You've been listening to Overdrive, powered by Fandul.
