Brian Azeodog, Jeff O'Neil, Jamie Noodles, McClennan, Luke Wilson in an hour.
Been a tough couple of weeks for tight ends, right?
Dalton Kincaid had a chance to make that catch last night.
Mark Andrews a week before.
Tight ends, they're taking heat right now.
They're under attack right now.
And Luke Wilson.
Not my tight end, Luke Wilson.
He's in a good spot and we are in a good spot.
You guys are feeling pretty good.
And you're up three going into the Super Bowl in terms of the points for those wondering.
You weren't that obnoxious in the text chain other than the comments at Al's Brother.
Which is unnecessary because we love Al's Brother, he's under the weather today.
I know Noodle's but we have a private one where the whole group's not in it, it's just
the four of us.'s particularly ruthless is it ruthless
I am really uncalled for and stuff but man yeah and but yeah tight ends man
there they're taking heat right now and I'm sure Luke will will step up in an
hour and fight back right on behalf of all tight ends and I'm assuming our next
guest will likely want to do the same thing. He is four times Super Bowl champ
Longtime Patriots short time buck you see him on Fox all the time joining us for the first time here on overdrive. Here's Rob Gronkowski
What's up, Rob? Oh
We got volume issues can we get the volume going there doogie check one two. Yes
Check one two three that is I hear me over we can hear you that is a
veteran in media you're a median vet to be doing a mic check we appreciate you
doing this how you doing man I'm in overdrive mode right now that's what's
up yes why was you know on point but I'm doing pretty good man you know I got the
kind of the you know Sunday hangover day on Monday you know it's kind of the
Monday scary all day yesterday we were at the game in philly breaking down the game
that we had a good time after a couple pops you know with the crew and uh...
now today's just a slow day just recalibrating recovering and uh...
getting back after it this week okay does brady get out with you after a fox
telecaster like what what where's where does he stand in the line
with? Like you set out with the crew and all that because he's
in the booth now right with Fox? Yeah, Brady's doing such a good
job. He actually he did unbelievable yesterday in the
booth and he's had such a great playoff, you know, in his rookie
year so far and I'm proud of him. But now he went right home.
He's got family. He's got kids he's got to attend to so totally understandable. Okay. What about the rest of the crew?
Have you like experienced or given any of your colleagues the real like take it deep on the road night out or you do?
Separate and just do that with your boys and let them kind of do their own thing. I
separate
I definitely separate but we have a good time together still.
I mean, it's kind of like a work party, you know, you just have a couple of drinks to
socialize, have a good time, nothing too crazy.
I mean, there's no there's no reason to get too crazy, but you want to get loose, you
still want to, you know, have some fun, you don't want to be stiff.
And it's a good it's a good atmosphere.
I love working at Fox.
I believe it's one of the best companies
out there in the world to work for and I've been with them for about three years now and
they take care of their talent. They take care of everyone in the organization, in the
business of Fox and my colleagues as well. They're the best around. They've been doing
it for over 30 years now and I learned so much from them. But you know, they're serious when it's time to be serious
and they're fun when it's time to have some fun.
And that's what's so great about working with them.
Yeah, that's what you're looking for, man.
You need a combination of both.
And you guys have got the Super Bowl, right?
Like Fox has got the Super Bowl down in New Orleans.
So, you know, in terms of preparing for that,
what do you make of it?
We got Kansas City, Philly. It's a rematch of what we had two years ago. These storylines are
you guys gonna have to find them now because again it's it's familiar teams
and you've been through that a lot in your career when you were at New England.
What do you make of this matchup for Super Bowl 59? I mean you're gonna
definitely have to go back to the game that was played. What
year was that when they, when they faced off with each other?
Two years ago. Yeah. A couple of years ago, 2020, right? Something like that. Yeah. Only
a couple of years ago. Yeah. It was a couple of years ago. It was just a couple of years
ago. We don't know the exact year, but that's okay. You're going to go back. You're going
to reevaluate what went wrong. You know what they did right what the Eagles did right what the Eagles did
Wrong what the Kansas City Chiefs did right what the Kansas City Chiefs did wrong
You're gonna see what type of new players that they have on the roster this year how they upgraded their team
Why both of them are where they are now?
Let me tell you the Kansas City Chiefs
They're kind of the similar team that they were when they beat
Philadelphia Eagles a couple years back in that they were when they beat Philadelphia Eagles
a couple years back in the Super Bowl.
Now with the Philadelphia Eagles,
I feel like they kind of revamped, you know,
their whole entire way that they play the game.
Yes, they have the same head coach and same quarterback,
but they're more of a run emphasis.
And they got, you know, a big emphasis as well
on their offensive line and defensive line.
So I believe that this Eagles team is a better team than when they made it to the Super Bowl
a couple years ago.
Howie Roseman has just done an unbelievable job as their general manager and bringing
in talent, signing guys, especially drafting guys as well.
That's how you sustain a program with success is being able to draft.
So then you can have guys in the team that are talented,
that are paid less,
and then you can also have the big time bets as well
and have a mixture of that.
And Howie Roseman has done an excellent job
with the Philadelphia Eagles in that department.
But what I really love about this rematch right now
is that both teams are playing their best football right now.
They're both peaking at the right time
going into Super Bowl.
So I'm so excited about that match
and it's gonna be some good football
that we're gonna be watching in two weeks.
So how many times over the next two weeks
are you gonna be asked the comparisons
between your boy Brady and Mahomes?
It's gonna be a lot.
I'll count this down right now
as the first time being asked that.
Yes. I would say that they're different players. I would say they're similar
in the ways that they're both winners. There is no doubt about that. Patrick Mahomes is
a winner. Tom Brady is a winner. And there's always a generational quarterback that makes
it hard for any other quarterback, you know, to go all the way and win the Super Bowl.
And last decade, actually for two decades in a row, that was Tom Brady. It was hard
for Manning to get to the Super Bowl because of Brady. It was hard for Drew Brees to get
to the Super Bowl because of Brady and win one. And now this era, it's Patrick McHolmes
who's making it difficult for quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and obviously quarterback
and Buffalo Josh
Allen who just lost four time in five years to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
So they're very similar in ways that they are winners.
They're QB destructors in the market of being a quarterback in the NFL and they're both
at the top of the game and they're both both best in the league at least at one point in their career
As well Gronk what goes in we were talking earlier just about the clutch gene is that just like a gift from God
Is that like preparation meets talent like you saw it with Brady?
We're all watching it with my homes like time and time again. You need that first down
You need that touchdown and time and time again, they deliver like
from behind the scenes. What did you see that goes into that clutch gene? Or like I said,
is that just a gift from God? And that's just the way it is.
While there's God given talent, but if the God given talents not working, well then that
clutch gene isn't going to come through. But if you work that talent that God gives you
like Tom Brady did, well then that clutch gene is going to show up when it's going to
be needed. And that's sure what that that is 100% sure what Tom Brady did. That
guy was a hardest worker on the field. He was the hardest worker in the meeting room. He
made sure everyone was on the same page and he made sure that he was elevated every single
day to elevate his teammates and coaches around him as well. And that's the same I would say
with Patrick Mahomes, you know, here's the here well. And that's the same, I would say, with Patrick Mahomes.
Here's the thing that's very similar.
Coach Balachek and Coach Andy Reed,
they run a type, they run a tough ship, a tight ship.
There's no messing around when you hit that practice field.
It's full go when you're out there with your teammates.
It's full go when you're going through each of your reps.
So then when you get to the game, you know,
if the game slows down a little bit
and then you're ready and prepared for all situations.
And that's how Andy Reid runs his program.
That's how coach Belichick runs his program.
And Tom Brady showed up every day buying in
to be on that level.
And Patrick Mahomes, from what I hear from players,
he buys in every day and he works his tail off.
And that's why both of them are, you know,
that's why Tom was at the top when he's playing and that's why patrick mahomes is at the top as
well because they put the work in we're chatting with rob gronkowski we were talking about the
bills and you know how heartbreaking it's been for them and obviously their connection to the
patriots they're within the same division they've been in the division forever you're a western new
york guy i'm curious where you stand on this because I'm sure you grew up, I don't know
if you grew up a Bills fan, but you grew up in the Buffalo area, you torched them
for years, Brady and Belichick torched them for years, then Brady leaves, Belichick
leaves, you leave, and now Mahomes and the Chiefs show up. Like where do you
stand on the Bills and how heartbreaking the last 20 years have been watching the
Pats do what they've done and now the baton has been passed watching Kansas City what they're
doing. Well I grew up a Buffalo Bills fan and then when I got drafted to the
Patriots I really wasn't a Buffalo Bills fan anymore because I was on the New
England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills passed on me two times so it wasn't really
heartbreaking over the last decade when I was playing I, I thought it was, you know, I
thought I was on the right path. And I thought Buffalo was on
the right path, because we were pounding on them. And I just
thought that was normal. I was like, that's, that's what you
get Buffalo for passing on me. But now that I'm not playing
anymore, I actually do feel for the city of Buffalo, I became a
Buffalo Bales fan more again, because that's where my home,
homegrown roots are from and now
that I'm not on the Patriots anymore I'm out of football I'm like oh all right I like the Buffalo
you know I like the Buffalo Bills again I'm cheering for them and it was heartbreaking
to watch that game yesterday especially for the city of Buffalo and all the fans and all the
people that live in Buffalo my family's still cheering for the Bills my friends are still
cheering for the Bills and they sounded defeated today when I was
talking to my friends and I felt for them because I know how dedicated those fans are.
I know how much time they put in to, you know, be that third to be that 12th man out there
out on the out, you know, on game day when they're in the stadium cheering for their
team.
So, you know, it's tough to see and I thought it would be really good for the city of Buffalo as well to boom the economy.
I feel like the, you know, Buffalo needs that. They need the Sabres to get that back on track
and get to the playoffs. And they need the Buffalo Bills to win a championship as well.
Yeah. We need that city to boom.
Yeah. Don't hold your breath on the Sabres right now, man. It's, it's a struggle for
them. Like that stings. If you're a Bills fan, right?
You wake up today and we were saying that earlier.
All right, let's see what the Sabres are doing.
They're dead last in the East
and they're not gonna make the playoffs again.
But in terms of the Bills and where they go from here,
because it does seem to be one guy, one team.
Like they make the playoffs every single year.
They seem to run into the Chiefs.
They have a lead in the fourth quarter and an opportunity to win in the fourth
quarter.
Like you were never really on this side of it throughout your career, but how
do they react to this?
How do you get over the top?
What kind of suggestion would you give to the Bills now that they're licking
their wounds and trying to figure out how do we crack this nut?
How do we beat the Chiefs?
What would you suggest they do from here?
Yeah.
Well, I kind of also feel bad for Bill's fans as well because once I left once Julian laughed
You know once Belichick left and Tom Brady left. It was it was like a relief for Buffalo Bills. It's like, oh, yeah
It's our turn now, but then here comes the Kansas City Chiefs. It's like nope. Not so fast guys, you know, we're still here
We're still in the AFC. So they're kind of blindsided with that by the Chiefs by Andy Reid and Mahomes and company
So that was a tough what you know a tough pill to swallow for Buffalo fans thinking that they're
Dominate which they have been besides the Kansas City Chiefs, but in order to beat them
That's good. That's a tough question because they've been building their team
You know over the last five years to beat the Kansas City Chiefs
and finally get over the hump. They have that nickel package defense, so Mahomes can't throw
on them and they've been doing an excellent job. They just can't finish the game. They
can't come through in that clutch situation. As you can see yesterday that they didn't
and then also the prior years as well, How they can come over that, you know,
how they can get over that hump, get over that situation.
You know, I'm not really sure yet.
I feel like coaching plays a factor.
You know, I feel like Andy Reid has out coached
the Buffalo Bills over the years.
I feel like he out coached the Buffalo Bills
yesterday as well.
So I'll probably say go in with a little different game plan
the next time you face the
Chiefs in the playoffs if that happens. So we said prior to having you on tight ends man they've
been taking some heat the last couple of weeks. Mark Andrews was taking heat last week in Baltimore
and yesterday Dalton Kincaid on that that last offensive play for the Bills.
Allen throws it up you know the blitz is on. Kincaid stops up, comes back and I don't know if you
I don't know if you classify that as a drop, a miss, like as a tight end, put yourself
in his shoes.
I'm sure you've been in there many, many times throughout your career.
How tough was that catch and how reasonable was it to expect Kincaid to make it?
All right.
The toughness of that catch, I would give it about a nine out of 10, eight or nine out
of 10.
You know, you got to plant your foot, you got to come back.
It was a wobbly pass.
It was pretty deep in the air too.
There's tons of guys around.
But if you want to win a championship, if you want to overcome all the penalties, all
the excuses, all the turnovers, you've You gotta make championship plays at championship moments,
at the biggest moment in your career.
And the Buffalo Bills did not make that,
you know, did not make that play
in the biggest moment of the game.
And that's what it comes down to is how bad you want it.
In order to make that catch, you gotta be so focused,
you gotta be so dedicated, and you gotta want it so bad
that you watch that ball go into your hands and you snag it and bring it in. For example, Julian Edelman
is absolute dog. He's an absolute savage. He wants to win. He wants a championship.
Did you see that focus in a while when they beat Atlanta when we were in Houston with
that catch that he made? Why did he make that catch? Because he wanted it more. So I just take it, you know, that the Buffalo Bills just didn't want it as bad as the Kansas City Chiefs. And
that's why they didn't end up making that play in the end. You talk about your history with New
England and everyone's moved on now you've retired, Tom's retired, Belichick has moved on. Is your
relationship different with Belichick now? I mean, as a coach it's probably a little bit different coach and player. Now that you're retired is it you know you see him as a
normal person he's got a girlfriend he's maybe out having beers like what's your relationship
with Belichick now that he doesn't have the power between player and coach? I see I see coach
Belichick as like my wingman now it It's a, it's a whole different situation.
You know, I was definitely,
I was definitely one of his players when he was the coach
and he was the coach, that's for sure.
And he was the boss, you know, he ran a tight shift.
You listen to what he had to say,
but it's totally different now.
It's a totally different perspective seeing him.
It's a totally different atmosphere when I'm around him.
And I found this like new, refound respect for him as well. And this new type of relationship that
we have now that I'm not now that I'm not a player for coach Belichick. And I absolutely
love it. I feel like everyone came together at that Tom Brady roast. Everyone got over
their differences, their problems that we had in the future, no, that we had in the past,
and then it just blossomed our future.
We all love seeing each other,
we all love talking ball,
and we all love reminiscing on the good times
that we had and all the championships that we won.
Well, it's gotta be an incredible feeling
looking what's going on in football today
where all these teams cannot beat Mahomes and the Chiefs and you guys beat
them.
Like you beat them in 19, you went into Arrowhead with the Patriots, then you go on to win the
Super Bowl and then you get down to Tampa, you and Tom, you meet them in the Super Bowl
and you guys beat them.
Like how much pride do you take in that watching all these quarterbacks, all these coaches,
all these teams trying to figure out Kansas City and you and Brady can sit back in Belichick and say we figured them out and we beat them.
Yes we did and I would just say we I contribute that to the whole you know entire organization
of the teams that I was on. Everyone wanted to win in the organization like I was saying you
got to have that clutch gene and you got to want it in order to be
a team like Andy Reid and Mahomes.
You know, they're so talented.
It's nothing short of amazing what they are doing going to the Super Bowl three years
in a row.
I have a possibility of a three P. But when we were together, you know, we had absolute
dogs and savages on our team, like Julian Adam and Danny Amendola.
You have Tom Brady, you have myself and then
like coach Belichick, absolute animal in the coaching aspect of the game, knowing every
situation what to do, you know, what to do, you know, and what place to call and what
to do if whatever situation pops up at end of the game. So we were prepared. No one was
ever panicking and we wanted to win we wanted to be champions
we put the work in and i would say that's why we were able to overcome the chiefs at that time
because everyone was in it together we played as a team no one was uh being selfish and when you
work together like that and uh you want to win a championship that's how you overcome other
championship teams well you might say it was destiny in the end and the kick of destiny is coming back but it's Peyton and Eli. Like what do you make of
quarterbacks making kicks? Like where do you stand on this Gronk? I like it because
Peyton and Eli they're characters they got a great person they got great
personalities they're funny they're in the media a lot and they love to do
different things as well for example this kick of destiny and I'm excited for it.
I just saw the commercial this morning actually about Eli Manning at the press conference
and he was getting asked questions and he just kept reminiscing that hey, I'm only here
not to get fined.
And then at the end of the press conference, he says he's using that fine money, you know,
so he can put some time and effort into his body with that money so he's ready for the kick.
And I thought it was a great commercial.
I was actually laughing my tail off and I'm going with Eli Manning to beat his brother
Pagan because of that commercial.
I love it.
All right.
So we're on Eli man.
Pick of destiny.
We cannot wait for it.
All right.
You got two weeks to prep for the Super Bowl.
I'm sure you're going to be down in New Orleans.
I know you'll be down there.
Have fun, you know, and we appreciate you doing this,
Gronk, thank you so much.
All right, guys, I appreciate you guys having me on,
and I just wanna let you know
I was a big hockey player growing up.
I played until ninth grade.
My favorite thing to do was check the goalie
when he went behind the net.
Well, Noodle's was a goalie.
Noodle's is still currently suspended from the NHL.
The last guy, he was an NHL goaltender.
The last guy that tried to hit him,
he took his goalie stick and chopped both of his legs off
from behind, and he's still suspended at 54 years old.
Misunderstanding.
Misunderstanding.
Old school misunderstanding.
Well, Noodles, I love you as my teammate, brother.
Exactly.
Thanks, Gronk.
Appreciate it. All right, guys. Thanks for having me.
There's Rob Gronkowski. There you go. Yeah. Kick of destiny between the Manning brothers
this year.
That'll be fun.
Yeah, that'll be good.
He's not wrong. The Manning brothers are...
They're awesome.
They're so amazing.
They're awesome.
They're great in the media. They're great. They're big personalities. And they tease
each other. That Manning cast, I love...
Yeah, they're outstanding
Like they get does anybody rock like a they are so committed to us like it's this thing. It's called a sweater vest
Oh, yeah, they love a quarter zip a quarter zip sweater. Yeah quarter zip sweater
They have one on every day every it's khakis with a quarter zip
Yeah, some docker shoes and you know And I lived in North Carolina for a long time.
That is the go-to move at a dinner, a country club.
It's a khaki and a sparey leather shoe and a quarter zip and a dress shirt.
They love it, man.
That's awesome.
Well, they're exactly like they're Louisiana guys.
They have big money.
Arch Manning played for the Saints.
The whole family is talented, right?
Yeah. And now who's son is it? They got their brother Cooper Manning played for the Saints. The whole family is talented, right? Yeah. Now, whose son is it?
Their brother, Cooper Manning.
That's right.
His son, Arch, is at Texas.
And he's going to be a player.
Yeah.
It feels like that kid, you talk about tanking,
like people are going to be tanking for Arch Manning.
Because I think he's eligible to come out next year, I believe.
Wow.
No guarantees he will, because he can make so much money. I was somebody gonna pay him 10 million to stay
Oh, yeah, man make 20 25 million to play college ball. That's that's getting corrupt man. Like it's yeah, it's crazy
Well, but it's you're here, but it's on the level now
Where it used to be corrupt where you show up and and an envelope from a booster shows up in your car,
or hey, we got you a fake job.
Now at least it's somewhat on the level, right?
You can make money, you can do all of that.
Where the corruptness was back in the day
where these guys weren't making anything
but they were driving Lamborghinis.
How you driving a Lamborghini
when you don't make money in college?
That's how, they finally were like, we gotta get around this. getting Lamborghini's. How you driving a Lamborghini when you don't make money in college? Yeah, exactly.
That's how they finally were like, we got to get around this. Who was the guy? Was it
Tunsel? Didn't he get?
Well, Laramie Tunsel, yeah.
There was also some text that got thrown out in his thing where it was like, I need money
and
Ole Miss was, every school was doing it they were all for every program they
were all doing it they were doing it yeah my buddy owned a shop in Raleigh
and I went in there one day and there was two guys sitting in the back just on
their phones seven feet tall I'm like what are those guys doing he goes they
work here yeah okay they work out they work here 50 grand cash
actually gotta go sleep on the couch.
Yeah, but that's what it was.
That was the workaround.
But nowadays it's just more out in the open, right?
The thing is, now it's professional sports.
Like, players are going to one school for a year
and then they're flipping.
But it's almost worse.
Like, it's crazy.
Yeah, like, I get it that the players,
there was so much money
and the players weren't getting any of it.
Right. And I just feel like there needs so much money and the players weren't getting any of it.
I just feel like there needs to be some sort of middle ground where you still keep the
essence of the school and the community and going.
Now there's people like, what if some billionaire alumnus is like, we need a quarterback.
I'll give you honestly $10 million a year for a quarterback.
There's been talks of that already happening at different schools absolutely need that quarterback
I'll pay for it yeah like that's crazy that's what will come in as a salary cap
for all these schools that's gonna be smaller schools that can't afford it and
then the bigger ones that print money all this would wipe out smalls and you
know it's gonna happen there'll be a salary cap and then there'll be money
under the table right again they'll get a there'll be a salary cap and then there'll be money under the table. Right. Again. There'll be a work around the salary cap from the work around from years ago.
Exactly. That is what is coming. Anyway, thanks to Rob Gronkowski. We appreciate him doing that.
Man, they had a good run. Again, I read this tweet. Someone sent in a tweet,
Jeremy, this is how warped it is. Because you lose sight of it from a bill standpoint now
We're so focused on the Chiefs naturally, but the Pats owned them forever and they're within the division
He brought it up exactly and like he's from he's from Buffalo
Yeah, but Jeremy tweeted in this is such a warp mentality, but I can understand it and I appreciate it
He said I'm a die-hard Bills fan
However, my hate for Brady runs so deep
that I want my homes and the Chiefs to erase all of their records. Go Chiefs. Like that's sickening.
That is. That's sickening that you have to think like that to erase the memory. But that that speaks
to the cruelty of what's happened. Like in Buffalo for 20 years Brady and Belichick and Gronk would
just come in and smack
them around and be like you're nothing to us and we we own this division and
you had to watch this dynasty forever and they finally leave and this guy
Mahomes shows up and it's like that's rinsing you and the crazy thing is I'm
pretty sure the bills like traded out of of the tenth pick or something in the Mahomes
draft and could have drafted Mahomes. Oh don't start going down. I'm pretty sure
that's the case. That doesn't come up much because they eventually drafted
Allen and everyone loves Josh Allen like Allen is Allen. But there's a bunch of
teams that screwed up on Mahomes man. Exactly but it's sickening man to go
through 20 years of Brady and Belichick and now you've got Mahomes and Reed and you just can't get out like you
can't get out and now you referenced it now you're back at square one it's like
remember the Oilers in September and October like man they just look yeah
they look hungover and disinterested and bitter and it's because they they made
it all the way there
and you gotta restart.
And in reality, you're restarting
to try to beat the same guy again,
and he might get you again.
That's what's crazy is he's not going anywhere.
Mahomes the same age as Josh Allen.
He's 29 years old, he's not going anywhere.
He's not leaving, he's not retiring.
You gotta beat that guy at some point.
You got to be around eight or nine more years and be real good.
You got to be great.
Because he's not, it's not like he's running for 200 yards or something like that.
No.
This guy's not overly athletic.
He's just so smart and so good.
You got to hope there's a bad cycle, a downtrend where they have some players, like, you know,
Kelsey leaves and guys like that.
Andy Reid retires.
Exactly.
That's what you're hoping for. Besides, there is a cycle there where you're not as good and that's that. A cycle. Exactly. That's what you're hoping for.
There is a cycle there where you're not as good,
and that's where you get them.
But the thing is, there's no guarantee
you get back to playing.
Well, but that's the other side of it.
If you're the Bills, what if, knock on wood,
what if you get hurt one year and you're out?
It's the same as the Oilers.
They could get dumped on the first round this year.
Absolutely.
And I gotta wait another calendar year.
Exactly.
There's no guarantee on anything. It's sick of him. I brought up the Belichick thing.
I was hoping, like I didn't want to head down that path. I was waiting for, like, remember
what the hymn of Tarpon? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was waiting for him. I was trying to lead
him down that path. Interesting, he mentioned the Brady Rose. Yeah, that brought everybody
back together. I was like, that's what got everyone back together, was kind of goofing
on Brady and... Bobby Kraft. Bob Kraft, although he was the only guy that was off-limits
Bob Kraft but Belichick was there that night like they all they all took their
heat man yeah yeah which is cool but listen you win that much over time like
by guns will be by guns but in the moment I'm sure it would have been yeah
really tough at times to deal with Belichick you're not playing anymore playing anymore, when everybody's out of the game, it's a totally different
ball game.
I went to a fantasy camp and Pat Quinn was there and I was there like both out of the
game retired.
It's just you become friends like the last friends.
You're like, it's no more nonsense.
You always have this nervous energy around your coach.
Of course.
You're just like, I got to be on the straight and narrow, mind my P's and Q's.
There's a nervous energy because he's the coach
and you might be in his bad books
and there's just not much said.
It's a weird vibe.
But when you just have a normal relationship
and you talk to them like we would as buddies,
it's a complete game changer.
It is, it is.
Well, and Gronk said, these guys, they run a tight ship,
but the reason they do that is because their success
yeah so it's easier to look back on a guy like that one with them to write
much better the stories are how many more laughs exactly boy bull like yeah
and it all makes sense once you go through it like now i get why we had to
be there at seven a m or why we had to do this or why we had to do that because
we want to know why he got this
though the exactly the worst is when it's a guy
who doesn't know what he's doing
and you lose all the time, then you're like,
I can't respect this, I can't see eye to eye with that.
Yeah, you're like, that guy was painful.
Yeah, that guy you may not wanna ever have a chat with.
The guy you won with, you're always gonna come back
and be like, eh, you know what,
on second thought it was pretty good.
Agreed.
All right, Pierre Lebrun still to come,
Luke Wilson will join us as well.
Luke's coming up in just over half an hour. Overdrive continues, TSN 1050N on the TSN app. All right,
so we've sent Al's brother out, well we haven't because he's sick today. We were supposed to
send Al's brother out somewhere in the city. I can't believe you didn't use AI. Yeah, all we need is
a still of Al's brother, like a picture of Al's brother, and chat GBT. Yeah, all we need is still a Valsbrother, like a picture of Valsbrother and...
And chat GBT.
Yeah.
And get his face moving without him actually moving.
Like, he could have done this the whole time.
I just can't believe he couldn't give us the clue today, but I guess he's on the IR and
that's fine.
Things happen.
So, you have to guess where he's hiding for your chance to win a pair of leaf tickets.
Here is today's clue. This place once served as practice ice for the maple leaves.
And the great Gordie Howe was even known to roam around the halls.
Really?
Yes. Okay. Tune in tomorrow for another clue. I have no idea if Al's brother will be back.
I might be reading it. Maybe Al's brother will be here. The first caller through on
Friday with the correct location wins a pair of tickets see the lease in the hurricanes nico randin and and the hurricanes
on february twenty second find al's brother
is brought to you by mcalpine ford in aurora our family the ford family new
full details of tsn ten fifty dot c a we've got big plans for going to get
al's bro back up and running with the cards
we're going to get to be a fresh
kind of break this week and then next week we're going to him back on track for a multitude of different reasons. Oh, yeah
Well, guys dookie will get doogie flying again a fresh start for doogie and a fresh start else brother
Yes, all around Al's brother and doogie
We're gonna make a way to find a way to make it work for both those guys
That's we look forward to that. Yeah, we got Al's brother's got to get his ass out of here.
A lot of irons in the fire here.
It's sick, right?
He's just sick.
Yeah, it's just not feeling well.
And again, I think, you know, the cards, some guys stole the cards.
It's so gutless and greasy that someone would do that.
Where's our go-card me at?
Did you put it on a poll or anything?
Like what?
Yeah, we got to figure that out and see if we can work that out.
I'm telling you, I will call around.
You should call your buddies.
I call Kujo and Wendell and I'm not calling anybody.
It's it's a tough one to ask for.
Do you have any old cards for Al's brother?
But I think we can.
I'll just think of it.
Kujo like a kind of some cards for who?
Al's brother. Really?
Who's that?
The guy I work with, they got it.
He'll hang out.
You call.
You will call
people and say hey I saw you're on vacation can you get me a hoodie can you
ask me a hat be different this is like what don't you think the hockey card
thing would be bothering people well I don't know how many cards how many cards
do you guys have I don't know I do roam in store I have zero hockey cards
storage somewhere but I could dig them up. Like I know, like, some of my friends and my brother kept some of them.
I'm not even kidding, Jamie.
I went into my mom's basement and she had like, you know those old school 80s like photo
albums?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
My kids still have them.
She said to me, you got to start getting the stuff out of our basement.
I put the books of cards in my truck and I stopped at a dumpster and I just threw them in there. I'm like what
am I gonna do with all these hockey cards? Why didn't you give them to Al's brother?
You know this was years ago. I know but he has a card empire like Al's
brother is a mover and shaker in the card. I'm going into storage. I think I
told you guys when I in 1991 Eric Lindros
changed the game for cards he sure did nobody was making money on cards Eric
Lindros in 91 showed up and I got because I was a second goalie taken in
that draft I got lumped into some like card deals with Eric like I think it was
Opie and all the the big names, Smokey's was another one
they flew us to Toronto for three days and took pictures of us did all of that
and we got paid pretty good money all because Eric changed the game and cards
I've got like boxes of these. Give them all to Al's brother. I'm gonna give them to Al's brother.
Fine, there you go we got to get Al's brother up and on his feet again
at these card depots because he shows up and
Causes a stir. It's like a parting of the seas man. He walks in with those cards and people go crazy
So we got to get out brother up and going again
New G is well do G as well. I wonder if any Alex Patrangelo four nations face-off cards have been
Manufactured with the anticipation of being sold. What do you do with those because Patrangelo decided I'm out
Guy placed 24 minutes last night for Vegas
But says I'm out pulls the chute on the four nations face on ramifications for well none
That's the report that none he's not being suspended. He's not this for me is a nightmare for the NHL
I think it's an absolute nightmares who's next
exactly and what the transuloh saying is i'd don't care right i couldn't care
less this guy didn't stop being patriotic
he's won everything you would think he wants to keep winning
and he's decided the four nations face off is simply not a box i care to check
i'm out
well i think it's a disaster and i'd i think what this that my big one of your
nagging injury that he has to take care of what do you talk to be so nagging if
you play twenty four minutes last night
can be so nagging
well we do you think you go to the olympics
making i think you would a hundred percent yes it is
but i think he's pulled the shoe because he's like i don't care about the four
nations face off so do you think
if you go to your cell and the way you were to the after-fifth
this morning was a little hot how did i in my life is not in on the four nations
how come austin matthews and some of the americans are kind of
there's a general excitement and now you're pumping on and saying petrangelo
doesn't care about that's where i'm going
this is thirty four a lot to go well i think this also puts the other players
in the league
under the spotlight because again petrangelo's one two cops
he's one ago he's one at all and he's saying
i want to make sure i'm a hundred percent from a lot of money tell him a
read the beginning don't pick me i don't know why he didn't do that is probably
healthy at that time ready he can't play twenty four minutes last night or played 24 minutes last night. Everyone's got something nagging though. Exactly. Everybody does. I do think there's a
separation here and I think it's important to point this out. Patrangelo again is not a young
player. Right. He's seen it all, he's done it all. There are a certain amount of young guys,
Matthews would be in this, McDavid would be in this. They've never played best on best.
Right. But they want to be there. There's also, there's a corporate element to this that I don't think is being brought
up enough that corporate partners want you on this big stage.
The guys making big money with different partnerships, like this is a big platform.
But I think if you're the NHL, the fear is that it's going to be closer to an all-star
game than it will be the Olympic games.
That's my fear. And if you're a fan, you're like, who's to say these guys aren't going to be closer to an all-star game than it will be the Olympic Games. Yes. That's my fear and if you're a fan you're like who's to say these guys aren't going
to show up and just kind of go out there and hey let's have some fun and...
8-7 game.
Yeah, 8-7 game and...
I'll be disgusted if it's that.
Would you be shocked if it's that?
I won't be but I'll...
That's what I'm saying is this is this could be the precursor of...
If it's a hybrid of the all-star game where I'm watching and I'm like
You're kidding me with this. I'll straight up drive home. I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. I can't do it
I can't I agree with you
But what have we said since the start the only way you can make people buy into this program is if the players prove that
They have bought in right and the first guy said I'm out of here man. I'm not interested and it doesn't mean he's not ailing i'm not calling him i'm not going to hear
the character issue bill at the general guys are unbelievable player great
canadian are just hanging by this there are certain pop and they can expect
come on the four nations based on a half-hour i was jacked up already don't
talk to pretend to know any of this again
if it was the olympic games i don't believe for a second he's pulling out of
that right i think he's thinking of course i'm going ailment or not. I'll play on one leg if I have to I'm playing
I think this is Patrangelo saying and he might be doing a favor to a lot of other players
I'd rather be on a beach somewhere. I'd rather not be going to Montreal in Boston. I'd rather not be playing in this tournament
That's the better guys are gonna follow him now. Would you be shocked?
Well, I know that you'd be shocked if guys said, you know what, thanks Petro.
Like, that guy's phone might be blowing up.
The narrative.
Appreciate you taking the first step.
And this is the ridiculous part of Twitter and social media and that.
The narrative out west was, McDavid gets clipped for three games.
People in Edmonton are like, why are you going to go play for the league, the Four Nations Cup? Why don't you tell them, Chuck, please? And I know
that's ridiculous. I know he wants to play. And this isn't challenging the
character of the players, as you said. But that was the noise that was
coming out of Edmonton last week when the league gave him, when he got three
games. Yes. Don't do any anymore for the league i just find your irrational
probably the national it was like finally is
best on best in the game against the players i i i get it
but you were so fired up for this you like me david instead in mckinnon i now
all the sudden you go into the stall go climb up to the top turnbuckle and now
you're dumping on the
four nations faceoff.
It's so out of the blue.
I didn't make this decision.
Again, that's my point, is that it's not suggesting that he's not...
He's obviously playing through something.
There's some sort of...
I don't believe he's just made something up, but we saw at the Olympic Games in the past...
Remember Ryan Getsloff had that big
it, remember Stamkos broke his head. These guys were rocky training to get there.
Yeah. I think there's clearly a separation between
the two. And I think we just have to be honest about that. And my fear is that this is actually
pulling back the curtain here and the players are kind of low. It's kind of like the world
cup in 16. It was bogus. I think there's a chance you're overreacting it's
one guy. I hope I am. And it's an older guy and maybe he's... And he's ailing that's
the other thing like apparently... But his point is ailing. The comeback the King
Daddy Topper is the guy played 24 minutes so what the hell's what is it is
growing is going to play 24 minutes. I don't know what I don't know what his issue is.
Regardless but I I think keep in mind what does he make a year let's eight nine and a half
million just call it nine million a year US his allegiance needs to be to the
Vegas Golden but that doesn't apply to the Olympic Games and it didn't apply to
the Canada Cup back in the day that's my point right is if it's the Olympics
everyone's like,
screw my club team for two weeks. I'm going. I'll walk there if I have to. Right. Because I am
itching to play and I've dreamt of playing it my whole life. This is clearly different. Yes.
Because again, it's manufactured event. I hope it's great. I'm not I'm not anticipating that it's going to be awful. I hope it won't be awful, but
My fear has always been it could be an all-star game vibe, right?
It could be might not be but it could be right and this is the first maybe it's an outlier
It's the first but it's the first step of like oh, we're three weeks out and he's playing 24 minutes a night
He's like, I'm not going. I've got something here.
You're right.
And it's hard not to argue.
But here, here's the thing, but Jamie, he never talked about any of this before because
no one had done this before.
No, but he met it.
There's more coming.
I will guarantee you.
You think there's fake.
It's not fake.
Not about guys are hurt. Like we were talking It's not fake. These guys are hurt.
Like we were talking about it off.
Lena Solmark.
These guys are hurt.
You played 24 minutes.
I know, but you can battle through on any given night
if you have a bad back and it feels good that day
and then the next day and you're 34 years old.
Here's my thing.
Lena Solmark, right now.
He's probably so horny to play in the World Series.
Right now, Sweden just lost their number one goaltender in Jacob Markstrom.
Markstrom's out, yeah.
Lena Salmarch hasn't played.
You're going down like who's...
He'll be Grant Fier to the next month.
But that's what they're talking about.
You know, Anton Forsberg might be available.
You know, guys like that because you are starting to look.
There's injuries.
See, there, on the Ottawa Senators, I would say, I don't know where you think you're going
in February, but you ain't going there. I would say, I don't know where you think you're going in February, but there's a point there.
I would say not even think about it.
Same point as he's making, but from the reverse.
Because if if Lena Salmarch doesn't play right up until February 1st and then puts his hand
up and goes, go into the four nations face off, I would absolutely go ballistic.
I would go ballistic.
It's going to go both ways.
You have to look at the health of the individual player. Right now, Petra Angelou, yes, he played 24 minutes last night.
24 minutes against Florida last night. Yeah, well that's a big game, you know. I understand
that. He's out there grinding, looks great. I was gonna bring you back a hat from the
four nations. I'm not bringing you back. I don't want it. I don't want it. Yeah, you
do. You want a goodie. You want all kinds of goodies. I'm gonna call you a quarter
zip if you have one. Quarter zip. They do kinds of I'm gonna call you a quarter zip if you have
orders after they do the manning
Give me an Eli. I think you're are going to be through osmosis players that bail. That's why we did a Sports Center hit today
Zach Hyman should be on that team sure
Probably got to keep his phone on because somebody's gonna be our Shifely same thing like there is there's gonna be there's gonna
It's it is something that you should take pride in yes it's it you've been
chosen you but here's here's another question I would ask for you I would
ask you guys and and maybe Patranjula thought this out maybe has maybe doesn't
again I don't know where his priorities are and he's won everything he's won
cups he's won win or won a gold. Is him pulling out of this tournament, again, he's got an ailment, I'm not disputing any
of that, but played 24 minutes last night.
Like we have to be reasonable here.
He didn't just have surgery, he played last night.
Is he out for the Olympics next year?
No.
Exactly.
But, if he's hurt, he is.
Do you think he would have backchanneled instead of i do this in my own i would i wouldn't be shocked
i i i get if you're too big of a name i think if he says i'm playing the olympics next year
and they want him so what does that say about how but like hockey canada feels about this event
if they're like don't worry about it man canada's got to get their act together i'll tell you that
like they've been too much arrogance and too much all of that.
And then the World Juniors, they crap the bed.
Like they've got to get their act together.
But again, using, like let's use Nick Suzuki as an example.
It's been reported on they weren't ecstatic with the way he handled invitations to the
World Championships.
Is he sitting there saying, wait a minute, like if Petro's on the Olympic team next year...
I think that's... Because it if you can't question in injury
but you're he's playing right now i think i had a good idea or did it last
night and i had a mon hockey canada for being that petty
going all you didn't want to go to a tournament three weeks after the just
played eighty two games but they're holding a guy holding apparently the
whole thing is the players you that, that's petty on their leadership.
They did it with me. Exactly. And if they did it to people, that's shame on them.
You take the best players available, you don't be petty and go, oh you stiffed us last year because you wanted to go hang out or you wanted to rest.
So Petrangelo, it's all good that he's going to play all the way up to the tournament, not bad any games when they come back i back petro because you know what okay
as you mentioned he's a winner
and uh... and this is a guy that if his body's not right and he's he would rather
take a break
at the four nations face off then
then go and grind
so be it don't be a life if he's allowed of course he's allowed to do it and i
don't blame a little bit he played twenty four i'm saying it but the optics
of the term in the importance of the tournament,
I think it's, unfortunately, you're getting a shot behind the curtain here.
That the players, they're all going to say the right things for the shield.
We love it, we're here, but behind the scenes they might be like, man, I want to make sure
I'm ready to play for my team.
I want to win a Stanley Cup.
I want to, again, olympics that doesn't happen
and you get this tournament is real they want to build this up it's got to they've
got to put everything on the line
you get a chance to lay someone out you lay someone out you you get a fight you
get the fight about the time we are there at first it was others difficulty
selling tickets in montreal and if this is a domino effect in the players pulling
out it's not the right and then it's that's that's my point that's where if
you're the league you like this isn't great not good it's
not great
here lebron and luke wilson still to come overdrive continues tsn ten fifty
and on tsn four
i'm not sure i'm brought to my boston pizza coming up we'll get to luke's
answer on which fourth downplay
we're gonna remember long-term
by fourth and one with the spot, did they get it?
Did they not?
When Allen tried to do basically a tush push
or that last fourth and five,
where he threw it up for Kincaid
and Kincaid couldn't catch it.
And Gronk said that was like an eight to nine out of 10
difficulty for anyone to catch that ball.
But he also followed it with, you gotta make that catch.
But you have to, that is the unfortunate truth.
It can be so tough and seem impossible, but
if you want to win a championship, that has to happen.
He stopped short saying, I would have made that catch, but he knew exactly what he was
thinking. Because he said Edelman, you know, like he goes, Edelman.
Yeah.
Gronk would have made that catch.
I guarantee you, he would have made that catch.
And Kelsey would have made that catch. And that's just the truth. And that's why they're
winners and they're great. And unfortunately for Buffalo, they got to figure that out.
So more on that into the next hour.
Luke Wilson will join us.
Pierre Lebrun more on the MECO ranting and trade from Friday night in the fall out there.
What else could happen around the league?
And again, the Leafs with a loss on Saturday.
They're not in action again until Wednesday.
We'll start looking ahead to that with Minnesota in town.
Overdrive continues.
