TSN 1050 on the TSN app, your smart speaker and up on TSN to Brian Hayes
Frankie Carrotto and Keegan Matheson. Come on baby! Here we go! Keegan Matheson in the house. I like it.
Happy All-Star break to me fellas. Yes great seeing you man. Happy to be here. Look at you, no time off.
You just love work that much? You want to do some radio for three hours? I couldn't miss an opportunity to talk
hockey you know. Yeah exactly. Good man I'm usually I'm usually slouched over on the
couch when we're talking. That's that's or I'm hunched over
somewhere in a stadium a back alley trying to hide from the noise so this is
a little better yeah it's pretty cool when we get you on
FaceTime like when you're down at the dome you're obviously up somewhere in
the media gondola or whatever and I guess there's an accepted like everyone
would accept that if you're in the media you understand that people have
obligations I'm sure
everyone would leave you alone but what's what's the ruling like if you're
on the road if you're ever walking down the street which I believe we've done
with you once or twice like do you get catcalls when you're FaceTiming into our
show or any other show you're doing oh yeah to deal with that kind of stuff
yeah because I'm sitting about this far away from people and I'm loudly
explaining the Blue Jays
Which is also their job. Yeah, so if my colleagues needed another reason to be annoyed by me that might be it
But yeah, we've done this from all sorts of places. This is a little better
You know being here meeting all these fine folks all these the fancy studio. So this is good
Yeah, it's great to see you here and the AC broke just prior to you coming in this is great it's okay I'm skinny and I run cool no problem I am struggling
today so I was outside a lot this morning took I did the shower it didn't
take and like the drive-in is so miserable and I'm in a suit because I
was doing Sports Center stuff I wish I was rocking the golf shirt next time you
come in golf shirt it felt like I know you're here first impressions and you know a lot of big waves and he's a big shooter around here around TSN
Yeah, exactly. I was shaking hands. Oh, yeah, I saw you cruising around
I need the line about who I am the first time I've got it is more glorious got it trimmed up
You know, you got to time the haircuts right? Is there an oil? Is there kind of like an ointment?
There is this is actually a sea salt oil today, you know, is that right?
And it's seasonal fellas, you know? Is that right?
And it's seasonal, fellas.
You know, when you get into the off season, that's when you bring out the spices.
That's when you bring out some of that.
The summer is for citrus.
It's for sea salt.
It's for mints, perhaps a mint.
Let me guess, like the winter's like a charcoal.
You get...
Yeah, you got to darken it up a little bit.
Yeah, that's when I really let myself go.
And that's when I tell your producers, you know what, I think we should do phone today. Yeah, that's when you... Maybe not the and that's that's when I tell your producers You know what? I think we should do phone today. Yeah, maybe not the video. Let's do phone today
Yeah, like wood burning or something like it's gotta be old school.
November's like cigars.
Cigars.
Normally off season like doing TV doing this with you guys is the only excuse I have to cut my hair and clean myself up
Yeah, so it's it's good sometimes but yeah, this will be about as high a bar as I said
Well, it's great to see you and you're sitting in the O-Dog seat and the O-Dog's coming up a little
bit later on. I got a note from him the other day said I want to come on I got things to say so he's
going to join us in like 20 minutes. Amazing. I'm sure we'll make open championship picks we look
forward to that. That starts tomorrow of course and we'll get into what we saw out of the All-Star
game last night and we've been waiting for the NHL schedule to be released and I'm sure I always got to take on this. It might be a TSN game on Friday night.
Like Marner's rolling into town. I didn't look at that who has the rights or who doesn't. They
don't have that yet. They haven't figured that out yet. That's not done yet. Okay so. We're all waiting for that.
We all got our schedules today and everyone had a very different experience with their like
NHL schedules that are close
to them. Joe from the bridge right away, as soon as that Leafs schedule came out into
the group chat, Marner's returning this day and the Leafs play Marner that day.
Right.
He goes, Oh, and they're playing the back to back in Boston to the point where I was
like, I can't do the Vegas schedule here. Like I'm going to mute this group.
Yeah. Joe from the bridge, like I saw him briefly as I'm walking in and he just starts yelling about Marner's return and
it is on a Friday night January 23rd they're in Vegas the week before which is
kind of crazy like the Leafs and the Gold Knights are gonna meet each other twice
over the course of what eight eight days I guess they're in that a lot in the
schedule okay that like is there any rhyme a reason for that it's just so
i don't know i'd my take on it is that if teams play like a tronno plays vegas
is like the preschool everything that you did didn't go all this not like you
played a team in november you don't seem again till april and then it's it's
just completely irrelevant well and again as we the build up to the game is
going to be about mariner like i i think i have made it clear this week and I will make it clear
as we get closer and closer to that game.
I think it will be the most anticipated Maple Leaf homecoming
likely in my lifetime.
I mean, I remember when Wendell Clark returned, but Wendell,
like no one wanted to see him go.
He was so beloved.
It was such a shock when he got traded for Sundin.
When Sundin left, it was very different because like they were turning over a leaf in terms of
transitioning who they were and what they were going to try to build like
people were hoping Matz would wave his no movement clause to acquire picks
prospects launch into a rebuild very different tone this is gonna have it all
like this is gonna have everything you could possibly look for and I predicted
this yesterday I said at the NHL will screw this up and they did.
They screwed it up because Vegas is in Boston the night before, which means they're going
to fly in late, not have a morning skate.
He'll play.
I'm not convinced he even talks to the media afterwards and then he's going to be out.
And again, I get why Vegas wants to protect Marner.
I get why Marner is like, this is amazing me get me in get me out and I get to an extent why the league would be
You know sympathetic to that
But as I said yesterday, you're in the entertainment business like this is a massive profile
This is a local kid leaving town coming back to the biggest hockey market on earth
And they're gonna fly him in like the dark night, fly him out.
This is what needs to happen now. You need to get like a mustache or a goatee,
put some glasses on, and you need to be incognito in Boston in a disguise as
like TSN ate the old show. Yes. Doing some kind of interview getting a
soundbite from Marner. I like that.
Like they're going to be Nessin, whoever the Vegas people are, they're going to be asking
softball questions. And then all of a sudden it's like Ryan, Ryan Hines. Ryan Hines. Ryan Hines with
a mustache. TSN comes off the top rope asking leaf questions. Yeah. In Boston. Yeah. It's going to
be like though, it'll be, how do you feel about going home?
Yeah. And he'll be allowed to dance around it. Right.
I think if he had some heart, he should make himself available here
if he's not going to be made available as it is.
Well, and that's I mean, we're projecting at this point,
but I think it's in his best interest.
Like if I were if I were counseling, I'd say just do it.
Talk to the media and don't rush out. I get the world we're in now the irony is if you were still a leaf
They wouldn't make them talk because the leaves protect these guys more than anybody else like at least would be like three questions
And you're out and they might do it after the game and probably after the game you can talk to them about the game
I'm sure people will throw their questions in but PR guys gonna be from Keegan to get away
And he's like guys one more and then that's it. It's over what they probably should do is say
We're because it's a back-to-back
Mitch is gonna talk at the hotel at 11 a.m
Make a decision you want to be a leaf skate or you want to come talk to Mitch in in the morning?
And I think and force guys hands basically nine out of ten guys like you you're a reporter
Yeah, I guess we'll phrase we'll put that to you Keegan, like if you had that option, you go cover the morning skate, for the Leaster there before a big game, Vegas is a really good team, or Mitch is setting up shop down at the Westin, where are you going?
How many morning skates are there in a season versus how many Mitch Marner's are there in a season?
82 basically.
Bingo.
I'm going to where Mitch M mariner is yeah and it's not
going to go away either I think of this all the time regardless of the support
but with mish mariner it's not going to go away if he dodges it this time or if
it's dodged for him it's not gonna go away it'll just be waiting next season
when he comes back it'll be waiting in the playoffs mmm and it's gonna keep
following him I think it's in his best interest to rip this band-aid off and I
know he doesn't want to
Evidently with how he's handled all of this
But it'll keep following him and the stories and the coverage will not grow kinder
I don't think as this goes and
It's easy for everyone. These things get overthought
You know how it goes in this and especially with the access that we get the Leafs players and you guys know
Well, it gets overthought and this can be handled pretty quickly, not painlessly, but with way
less pain than there's going to be if you drag it and drag it and drag it.
Absolutely. And again, it's not about attacking Mitch Barner. Like that's not what I'm advocating
for.
No, because guys like, you know the guys that are on the beat.
It's not going to be that hard.
It's never that hard. You know them all, it's Jonas, it's Alter, it's Masters.
They just need to ask a certain question,
like a bigger picture question.
They're not trying to like interrogate your life.
Yes.
They have a job.
And it's professional, it's about hockey.
And they're gonna do that job and it's gonna be fair.
Yes, it's gonna be about hockey.
This is not the old days where like anything goes.
It's just not the case anymore. You're on the risk of losing access
It's not that scary of a market, right? It's it's not New York at peak New York
It is not Boston when Boston's coming for you. It's not that scary of a market like when the Yankees are playing bad. Oh
That must be a blood you need security, right? Like you must have seen some of those. Oh, yeah over the years
Absolutely, and it gets harsh it gets personal and it gets targeted. Right.
When in reality, what a lot of people are going to be looking for from Mitch Marner
for TV purposes is a clip, is a video of him saying, I loved my time here. Thanks Leafs
fans, whatever. Yeah. And what writers are going to be looking for is a quote to put
in a story. It's not a battle. There's nothing that serious
happening here. Yeah, there's a lot of hurt feelings. There's a lot of fan
emotion involved in that. Fans are gonna have their right to boo them or say
nothing or do whatever the hell they want. But from the media standpoint, I
think it's been built up as big scary Toronto media. It ain't that...
No, it's not.
I promise you it's not that serious.
It's not. And you can speak to it because you get out you know this what happens is when it's your
bubble you just you extrapolate everything like oh no there's nowhere
else like this well how would you know you never been to Philly you're not from
Philly not from Boston New York Chicago and I think you know you bring up a good
point because if Marner again we're this is all conjecture, maybe steps in and goes, I'm going
to speak multiple times, I'm going to speak before the game, after the game, and I'm just
going to get it all done.
And I think that'd be in his best interest because again, it's not going to be that harsh
or that painful.
But I think it would be more important probably to speak, like from my perspective, if I could
have a choice after the game, after you seen the reaction Whether it was as harsh as you thought it would be not as harsh. Maybe the Leafs do some incredible
Ceremony for him or some montage and he can speak to the emotions of that. That's gonna be interesting. Yeah
Everyone gets something. I want to hear him after the game
They've got we know like the the the two different worlds of welcomes that you get if you were were just a guy, you get like a picture and your name.
It's like, welcome back, Timothy Lilligran.
But if you are someone who is a little more substantial, you get the video.
And then how long is the video?
How emotional is the video?
Close up on Auston Matthews face.
Right.
Like where does Mitch Marner land on like the just a guy to you were an absolute hero because on paper
If you didn't know anything about the saga of Mitch Marner, you would just look at the numbers and how long he played here and say
Like that deserves a hero's welcome. Yes. Yeah, but I know we know too much. We know what happened
We know that you were gonna go to Switzerland because you weren't getting your money and we know that you were talking to people about
Vegas now and the playoff record.
So it'll be interesting to see how the organization handles
it because they are always over the top.
It's always first class.
Well, how over the top are they gonna go
for Mitch Marner now?
That would be interesting to get a read on that
because Shanahan's not here anymore.
And like Shanahan was connected to him
more than anybody else.
Yeah.
You know, like he was the godfather of the core four. It was his image, it was
his philosophy, and he was diligent in continuing it. And Shanahan's gone, like
Wickey's been gone for a long time, but he was here I guess, you know, at the
start or at least when he got drafted. You know, it's a different ownership group.
Cannon bombs even. Cannon bombs like not to be in the same spot like he was. So
you're like, that's really what sticks out in 2025 is like it's the year of change. Like Shanahan,
Ujiri, Marner, Bell, Tannenbaum. Like it is a, this is a year we're not gonna forget. Like you just wrote a book, the 2025 Toronto sports scene is gonna be a fascinating one
because on top of it,
the team that has held the most consistency
has been the team that was taking the most heat.
That was the Jays.
Like six months ago, they were getting crushed.
No one was talking about Shanahan and Messiah.
They were just over there doing their own thing.
It was Shapiro's gotta go, Atkins gotta go to go, what is going to happen here? Are they going
to pay Vladdy? Tickets are too high. And now all of a sudden they break out of the all-star
break and they're sitting at the top of the division with a chance, I think, for Ross
Atkins to really redeem himself over the next two weeks leading up to the trade deadline,
where if he hits a grand slam, even a a triple and let's say Santander does return and
I know you you mentioned on our show a couple of days ago you're not
necessarily bracing for that but let's say he does return let's say Scherzer
stays healthy and has an impact all of a sudden Scherzer he sign Santander he
sign they acquire a piece or two, they win the division, those
two pieces play a big role in that.
The 180 from Ross Atkins on March 15th, 2025, to what it could be on October 15th, staggering.
Man, you can't buy that PR.
Staggering.
It's amazing.
And the thing is about Ross Atkins in these last few years, when I look back through all
the trades he's made,
there's no disaster.
When I look back through the contracts that he's handed out,
there's no disaster.
There's no Baltimore Orioles, Chris Davis,
oh my God, we're still paying this guy type stuff.
But they've been missing that magic.
And I think they've got that this year.
The roster is not notably better by any means.
It's about who they were.
We talked about them being a 500 team a lot of times, but you just need that magic, man. And when it
all comes together, the 92 and 93 teams, that wiped away a lot of what people
felt about the 80s when they were close, close, close, couldn't quite get there.
You just need that to come together at the right time. And for Ross Atkins, man,
you hear, dare I say, people saying good things about Ross Atkins in this city right now.
It's strange for me.
I didn't hear that for years.
And you know what's crazy is
we would all say certain things about the team
and they would say stuff that was essentially
like the complete opposite.
No, we believe in this, our numbers tell us this,
and we're sticking to the plan.
Everyone's like, are we the ones taking crazy pills
or is it you?
And then in a year like this, it kind of proves them right.
They were-
Brother preach.
I tell ya.
They kind of did know what they were doing,
but it just never came to fruition before.
Or is it just a one-off?
Or can this be something that they parlay
into year after year after year?
I'll tell you this though.
Like you find yourself atop the AL East,
you gotta-
Well now you got to hammer home.
It is full gas pedal because you don't get chances like this
where Yankees are missing a little something,
Red Sox are underachieving, Razor well behind you,
Orioles are a disaster.
It's gotta be full gas pedal now.
Like this is the one where you say,
we gotta push our chips in.
You have to.
When else are you gonna do it?
That's all I keep coming back to.
When else are you gonna do it?
There's never gonna be a better time.
They have money, they have players,
they have prospects, it's sitting right in front of them
And this is this is the deadline and this is probably year six of me saying this whatever forget the last five
This is the deadline they'll be judged by because you cannot imagine a better setup than what they have right now
And this is not a year to complement the roster
I do not care if they get a number seven reliever a number five starter a lefty bat, I don't care. This is the year to raise the ceiling.
This is the year to stop acting like the little Toronto Blue Jays and start
acting like Toronto. So you're saying big city. 2015 exactly like go get Toulou,
go get Bryce. Act like LA because that's what Toronto is. That's how they
spend, that's what the city is. It's right in front of them, man.
And has there been a little luck to get here? Sure, maybe. But it's all come together and they've got that magic
they were missing when they probably had better rosters.
I don't know how to explain it, but it's here and you can't let it go. Yeah, it is and
you know the spotlight will
obviously be on the players as it should be once they get back to it later this week
You got to play you got to perform
You got other teams that are right there with you red Sox have won 10 in a row Yankees are a couple of games back
You know
They're gonna be active like there's pressure on Cashman in New York to do things and try to improve that team and help out Aaron judge
But yeah, it's a real opportunity and you're right in terms of what they're likely to get i mean there's names you know there's different
rumor mills of who could be available and who who could not be available
it comes down to more what they're willing to stomach in terms of giving up
right because of let's say player x is available that makes a lot of sense
if player x is available for the jays is available for all the other teams in
baseball that are competing right now there's a lot of teams who think they have a
legitimate shot. So you're gonna get them, but you gotta pay. So that's what it's
gonna come down to. Like, do they have the stomach? Atkins, Shapiro, to put in a big
piece, like a big name that that is in the system. And this is where they can
get a piece like that because you're not doing the free agency thing
where it's up to the player looking at five or six
different options and he says, well, I got LA,
I got New York, I got New York again.
And you're like, well.
You get them and bring them in.
You know, Toronto's like fifth on that list.
So I'm gonna go to one of those.
Now it's like, no, no, we're willing to pony up.
We can afford you, we want you,
we're making the transaction with your manager
And then we're trying to bring you in so like this is this is the one as opposed you have control over the yeah trade deadline
The agency this is the one where they can actually land the big fish or have a much better chance of landing the big fish
Because when it comes to free agency, it's always like there's some kind of wart that comes with it
It's like yes war bird or Scherzer's here
He might not be able to pitch very much. Right.
Like it's always that type of there's a tax that seemingly more of a tax,
you know, or you got to you got to build up your own guys like Flatt.
You know, you got to you got to find your own guy.
You got to basically develop your own guy, let him pop.
And then you got to pay him, which is what happened.
But, you know, the All-Star game last night, I thought it was a resounding success for Major League Baseball. Full disclosure like I
said yesterday the the only thing I really wanted to see was Paul Skeens,
Aaron Judge and like Skeens was hitting a hundred like he was it looked like he
was barely winding up and he hit a hundred on a gun like he I don't think
he threw anything off speed I'm not sure he did though and Judge you know dribbles one up the middle he did get a bat on it the
previous two guys couldn't but that's the show man he got run support he
actually yes he finally did two runs of run support must feel nice I don't think
he's had two runs of run support in the last like two weeks now for him that's
why I wanted to see him keep going and I get it the Pirates like no and skeins is young and there's other guys who want to go in
he's going back to Pittsburgh man that's they're not winning anything they're not
competing for anything there's nothing important let him go like seven innings
last night if the three not get really let us see it let us see skeins go
through every single all-star that was the big American League because when
you tune in an all-star game you want to see something rare that's what all-star
games and the Pearl Bowl are battling scarcity right now if this game happened
15 years ago I would be fired up because that would be my shot to see Fernando
Tatis and Shohei and Kershaw guys on the West Coast who aren't on my TV channel
every night right but now I can open this laptop here and the first 50 things
I'm gonna see are a Paul Skeen's gift here's his two thousand four hundred blah blah
rbms but it's in your face constantly you can hide from an interleague play
you're always gonna see them too you're always gonna see them i can flip on mlb
tv tsn and watch these games and it's easy but skeens against judge that's a
little rarity the derby the swing off that was
great and that was fantastic yeah because it added something new something
that you don't see every single night now if I have seen looking through you
guys like Corbin Burns face a good hitter before it's cool it doesn't do a
lot for me it's not gonna keep me up late at night but jeans versus judge
that's special the derby swing off, man, it's,
the fact we're talking about an All-Star game the day after, is a compliment to it.
It's a win.
We all like it, but you know the way like baseball purists are.
Is there a corner of like the baseball purist world down in the states that hates this swing
off and doesn't like what happened last night?
There better not be for an all-star game.
For an all-star.
Like eventually this is going to get thrown out to complete games in the regular season.
I don't know when it's going to happen, but it's going to be presented and they're going
to debate should we go nine innings if it's tied we do a swing off.
That will upset the purists.
That will upset the purists.
I'm not prepared to get there yet.
Like I think they've made so much change over the last few years i i don't want to see
that last night as runners in the regular season in yet exactly there's
one and i think clock
we love it that we're moving in a pretty good clock it's an extra beer
night felt that and the best thing that's happened now so here's great
but this will be one that gets brought up and is
treated semi seriously
it won't happen
what but it's it gets people talking about stuff they want in baseball, which is a good thing.
But maybe you work it into the All-Star game next year.
Maybe after the fifth inning there's something that you jam in there and make work.
But it's good.
Well, another element that you have to remember is these are All-Stars.
If that's happening in the regular season and you have Colorado playing the White Sox and you got some guy trying to get the ball out of the infield you're like this isn't
going to fly for us. Like it's one thing if it's Schwaber who has so much moxie he's got such an
aura to him man like the fact that he's on the same team as Bryce Harper so lucky if you're in
Philly like he just mashes he's got a Fred Flintstone vibe to him. Perfect Philly guy.
Perfect Philly guy. Kyle Schwaber might be one of I said this
this morning on first up one of three baseball players I'd want to watch play
baseball. Yes. And he is not in the top 50 players in the game maybe he's on that
edge but man what a player yeah and he's a throwback he fits Philly so well and
man if bench is clear number one pick oh that guy would destroy people he's a wine
barrel like that third one he went down to get it and it was like the old guy at the pitch you know
what i mean like the old guy trying to finish off like the softball season and he just went down to
get it and he sat there and watched it you're like three for three is phenomenal to close it like it
was just a great way to end the game I thought it was perfect for the All-Star
game but the crowd was great I thought what they did with with Hank Aaron like
commemorating him passing Babe Ruth was unbelievable I wasn't prepared for that
but that was that was incredible I thought the whole show was really good I
was disappointed with the derby the night before but I thought the All-Star
game was great and it lost in all of it is like it's a crazy comeback too yes
which kind of gets buried under everything else that happened. Big time, big time. All right,
the O-Dog's coming up. He'll give his take on Marner's return. We know when he's coming back.
A Friday night in January. Get his take on that. Get his take on certainly the Open Championship.
We'll do some picks. He's going to be over the phone. So maybe we keep it to five picks,
seven picks, a Canadian each.
I don't know.
I know where this is going.
You gotta see where he goes.
We're going to have 12, 15 guys, half the field to be picked probably in the next
segment.
We'll get his take on what Scottie Scheffler was saying the other day too,
about just trying to find satisfaction in the sport.
So the O-Dogs coming up, we got John Gibbons on the show today.
Darko Ryokovic coming up as well.
The Raptors are just, they're a juggernaut at Summer League, man
They don't lose they create turnovers. They look great. The kids have been great
So catch up with Darko get his take on what's going on down in Vegas

with stuff. Like I feel like he tinkers around the house different putters different things around the yard. Yes. Big tinkering guy. He's a tinkering with stuff. Like I feel like he tinkers around the house, different putters,
different things around the yard. Yes. Big tinkering guy. He's a tinkering guy. We think
it's useful tinkering though. Is he fixing things? No, he's useless when it comes to anything like
that, but he will find a way to make it look as if he is being useful, which is a masterpiece.
Like that's a veteran move if you can pull it off.
Yeah, if you have people believing
you're accomplishing things,
without actually having to do it, that's-
Mostly just your wife.
It's, let's be honest.
If we're gonna streamline this,
yeah, it's basically one person.
Can I ask you something?
Yeah.
You went to Cabot, right?
I was out there, yes, out in Nova Scotia.
In Nova Scotia, beautiful Nova Scotia.
The island, you take the ferry across?
No, drove straight north. How much did you spend on merch and how much did you tell your wife?
You sent on there we go
Questions a lot the first answer is a lot. Yeah, cuz I like both
Both pro shops are awesome
I have the two different logos like the links is like the ship and then the cliffs is the lobster.
Right.
So they rope like, you know, again,
it'd be rude not to accomplish both.
You gotta get both.
So I hit the one, I went with like,
I had a hoodie, a belt, head cover.
The guy was buying Peter Millar this, Peter Millar that,
and then Dormy Workshops,
which is a great Canadian out of Halifax,
great Canadian company
they had really cool stuff i'm like i'll grab some of that and i went down to the other one i bought
a t-shirt i bought a ton of stuff but i didn't give the exact total to my wife i just said a
fair amount she knows what's coming like she hit me you would understand that like there's like
there's a bill coming and let's clarify when i went to augusta when i went to the masters
blew everything out of the water.
So this was a level or two below that significantly, but still.
Do you buy her something?
Is that part of the strategy?
I bought my kid something and I got her a bag.
Which was gifted, but she doesn't need to know that.
Anyway, anyway, here he is for the mid-July check-in, the O-Dog Jeff O'Neil.
Over FaceTime, yes! Wow. What'sTime. How about Keegan in your seat man
he looks like a million bucks I'm not gonna lie. Some respect to that chair some respect in the
chair Keegan it's great to see you there pal. Good to see you dog I heard they brought me in just to
keep the looks and charm rolling here so i'll do my best
yeah it's good stuff you guys hazy you just you don't change pal i had to sit there and listen to you guys talk about that for seven minutes and i was shaking my head and i'm like these guys sitting
here listening to your silly stories but good to be with you guys good to be with you and uh i guess
we'll begin with the the nhl scheduling which has been a big topic of discussion for us
Mitch Marner, he will be here January 20 30 plays in Boston the night before
You know, you've been in a position like this
I don't know when you went back to Carolina, you know
If you were playing the night before or what have you but what would you expect this to look like?
For Marner when he finally gets back to Toronto
Well, I think it's like for me going back to Carolina,
it's a really nerve wracking experience, Brian.
Like you just, you played there for so long
and I know we joked about my attempt at like
being prepared for like acknowledging the crowd
and there was no acknowledgement was a bit of a bummer.
But like, I honestly guys, Acknowledging the crowd and there was no acknowledgement was a bit of a bummer
Like I Honestly guys
I honestly think I might be the only player that's ever played that didn't get some kind of tribute video on their first game
Back I was it was so bizarre, but you're just wondering like you're gonna get booed
And it's just a really weird feeling because you're playing against guys who you're so close with. But for Mitch, I mean, I don't know how it's going to compare. We all can
remember the John Tavares experience going back to Long Island where that got pretty
ugly. Like it's still ugly every time he goes there. And I don't know. It's just, I just,
I can't put a pulse on Brian maybe you can or all you guys
like where the fan base is gonna be at because you know, I thought it was weird how Mitch kind of
Admitted to looking into Vegas and was asking about Vegas and everyone was like where was this guy's head at during the playoffs?
If he was asking everybody about Vegas
Like I don't know. I found it really weird that he
would admit something like that. So where the fan base's heads are going to be at when
this guy returns, it's going to be something interesting. I know it's a Friday night game.
I'm not sure if that's a TSN game or not. I'm sure we'll find that out later in the
summer. But if I'm not working, I'll definitely be in the building just to get a sense of
what's going on.
Me too.
It will be interesting because I feel like there's different
age demographics that would relate to Mitch Marner and not relate to Mitch
Marner. Like if you're the young kids, the YouTube generation, like you kind of
like Mitch Marner and like the goofy dances he was doing and the
facial expressions but if you're a boomer you hate it. You're probably
booing him, right? Like so I feel it's not going to be as visceral as the john
to bars thing
it's likely going to be somewhere in the middle
which i don't know how i don't know how that's gonna land when it's all set in
that be a win for marner
it's in the middle it's a water that'll be a win
and i mean i'm thinking he'll be anticipating it being loud and crazy and
nasty
if it's anything short of that i think he'd be ecstatic with that
and well the the it's not just going to be a simple as and i know die her jones
talking about a prime
where it's like
all he was a great player so when he steps on the ice just cheer like this
there's a lot of different deeper levels to this guy coming back into the
building you know just the
you know working out the trade and not wanting to get traded during the season and all the
contract stuff like this isn't just a guy that stepped in although he was a hometown
kid and he you know embraced the city and for the most part I think the city embraced
him there's a lot of different layers to this guy returning and the reaction is going to be
fascinating because he's Mitch Marner he's a polarizing guy and you saw the
presser and the parents out in Vegas I don't know it's really going to be a
fascinating night when he steps foot in that ice that's for sure
I'm curious guys to like the long-term deal of this too like Mitch Marner if
you hate him right now you'll hate him that night if you're on the fence you'll be on the fence that night but how this sets up how we to like Mitch Marner, if you hate him right now, you'll hate him that night. If you're on the fence, you'll be on the fence that night. But how this sets up
how we talk about Mitch Marner at the end of his career, 10 years from now, he's played
it out with the golden Knights. He's finished wherever he finishes. I think of guys who
are remembered as Leafs alumni and you have the big names, you have the Gilmour's, Sundeans,
you have the Wendell Clarks. Who's Mitch Marner 10 years from now, 15 years from now?
Is he in that box wearing a Leafs jersey?
Is he an alumni that people hold up?
And I think how he handles these next couple of years goes a long way to start that.
Right now the reaction will be what it is.
People are emotional.
But you're talking about a guy, fifth all time in points in this organization, and it's
been around for a while.
How does he get remembered?
What type of alumni is he? Does this stick to him? You know, he can control that. It's a great question. Yeah, it's been around for a while how does he get remember what type of alumni is he does this victim you know
he could great question that
yet's a great question is a great point to guys because i bet you there's some
people this summer that when they heard that he was looking into vegas any kind
of new this was common
or somebody that heard that he blocked the red and trade and didn't want to get
trade in the middle of the season
i'd like to know some people that are going to flip work on january they're
going to be like i don't hold any grudges
against this guy and I just don't care enough to still be mad at him and there
will be still people that have been frothing at the mouth that that will
still be mad but I guarantee you just to your point Keegan there'll be a bunch of
people that are like I just can't care enough to just still be mad at this guy
and I thought I was gonna boo him and maybe I'll cheer him and that's just where it's
at right now.
Yeah, and you're right about the amount of time that will eventually pass.
There's examples of guys who are leased for a long time and now you don't really think
of them that way.
I'll give you an example.
Zach Hyman was kind of a homegrown, yes not drafted, but a choir, played for the Marlies,
was a leaf, really good leaf.
He'll be an Euler when he retires.
And you know, like our buddy Matt Stage, and Stage was a Leaf for a long time, but he's
a Flame.
Like that's what I think of him as a Flame.
Do you think Mitch Marner will be known as a Golden Knight when he retires or a Maple
Leaf when he retires?
I'll tell you what can change that whole philosophy or idea, Brian, is if they
win two Stanley Cups in his tenure there and he's a Con Smythe guy and he's one of the
major contributing factors because it's whatever as a player you can fall back on. If you go
to a different place and you kind of stink the joint out, it's like, I'll be known as a whatever where I was a better player. That's what kind of
players do. They're like, I was a better player there, so I was kind of more of a Canuck.
For me, people say, oh, you played for the Carolina Hurricanes, but when you're in the
Toronto market, they're like, oh, you're a former Leaf, and you cling on to that because
it's a lot more of a big deal in the city of Toronto
So but if he goes there and he's a big part of winning and he plays his tenure out there
He'll be a Vegas Golden Knight, which seems really weird to say right now. It does man
What would you make of seeing the schedule come out and it's the second half of a back-to-back in Toronto
And then the game in Vegas Vegas is playing the second half of a back
to back. So there's really, there's not a lot of time for reporters to kind of get time
or access with Mitch Marner with those two games this year.
I mean, what do you think you're going to get? I mean, I know that the media loves to
ask the questions, but you're going to get, I loved my time here. It was a dream of mine. I embraced every minute of it
And it just didn't work out now. I'm in Vegas and I couldn't be happier being in Vegas
So that's what you're probably gonna be missing out on
it's not like he's it's not like he's gonna say I just can't wait to stick it to these guys and
You know
Absolutely sewer the Leafs and the fans and they can all suck on it after
this game. It's not like it's going to be one of those things.
No, it's probably not.
But there's always that, like with Marner, there's always that like weird slippage. It's
like, yeah, we were like gods here. You know, those kind of quotes that you're not expecting
that people grab and really run.
Well, even a few of those.
Even the yeah, we were talking to people about Vegas like you know I wonder if you got off the stage and I
should not have why did I say that why why did I have to say that publicly
because now people in Toronto are gonna attach themselves to it hold on just just
to jump in on that like that is normal conversations that happen every single
day in the NHL you know much time guys spend together like you're on the bus
you're on the plane you you're at the arena.
I know Frankie, but to drop that in the presser was a little bit kind of wow. It's like you
could have left that part out and then that's the thing. There's a bunch of stuff that always
can be left out which he chose not to.
With the O-Dog Jeff O'Neil, I'm sure you heard Scheffler yesterday.
Oh my God, dude.
Like where's this, do you like where's this do you think
there's a Chan Scheffler within the next five years just packs it in and says
screw it I'm not playing anymore? Like it kind of sounded that way yesterday. Yeah
it was real like people were praising him which was like it seemed like the
total opposite of a Tiger Woods presser where he basically would let it be known
to the world where it would be like
I want to rip people's faces off and
Rip their hearts out on the 18th green when I putt out to win and I want to see them bleed to death when I'm
Done doing that and this guy was like I don't even know I like doing this and I don't know why I like winning because
It's for two minutes, and then I want to know what's for dinner, and I love my I'm a bit of a psycho I love practicing, but I still don't know why I like winning because it's for two minutes and then I want to know what's for dinner and I love my I'm a bit of a psycho I love practicing but I still
don't know why I do it. Fascinating words and fascinating thoughts on
everything but it kind of makes you wonder that if in three years and he
literally can't make a putt he just waves to everyone and says you'll never
see me again. Yeah like that's kind of what I took out of it like every
athlete has a different viewpoint.
I think he was trying to say, I think it was a multi-layered answer.
Like he was getting into a number of things and he really wanted to express the importance
of his family and all that, which is understood.
But it did seem to open the door to like one thing happening off the course or on the course.
And he's like, I'm cool with basically saying I'm out of here you know which is kind of which is wild considering he's the number one player
in the world. You know why you can say that when you've made that much money you're not
thinking about... I was just gonna say Frankie yeah this guy's got a hundred and eighty million in the bank
yeah like some guy that's scratching and clawing that's got four cents in his
bank accounts like I gotta bust my ass to try to put food on the plates of my
family and this guy this guy's basically what he's just said Hayes and maybe you his bank accounts like I got to bust my ass to try to put food on the plates of my family
and this guy this guy's basically what he's just said Hayes and maybe you guys disagree
but I just kicked everyone's ass in a three-year period and made so much money where if it
ended tomorrow maybe that was the gist of the whole thing if it ended tomorrow I just
wouldn't give a you know what yeah exactly like that Like he says he's made so much money over the last three years
It's got to be over a hundred million on the course of our course where he's just like
If anything happens and I just I'm not good at this or I don't want to play then I probably won't be doing it
Yeah, I don't exhausted. Yeah, that is down and exhausted
And it's when I think of like athletes at very, very top of their sports, you think of MJ, you
think of Brady, these great, great, great athletes, they kind of have the ability to
turn the heart off.
And it's that gene that makes them great but is also kind of problematic at the same time.
And maybe if you can't turn that off, it's challenging, man.
He sounded exhausted.
Yeah.
And what is he? 29? Yeah, you're in his late 20s.
I think the word he left out, guys, was just the reason he practices and the reason that he
loves doing it. It's just competitiveness. Like I just mentioned, he's made so much money that he
probably doesn't even think about the paychecks. Like he said, I think about it for two minutes,
and then the conversation goes to what's dinner
and he just basically forgot the words to describe why he does it and loves doing it.
It's competitiveness.
He loves going out there and winning.
And I think he just forgot to mention that or kind of got lost for the right words and
forgot to say it ultimately.
Well, it's such a luxury when you have that much money that you can blow that pot five
feet past and don't have to worry about lagging to make a cut or lagging to hold on to the
money you have you know what I'm saying like if you're if you're a grinder you're
like man if I make this pot I'll make more money but if I if I three putt this
I lose money so I don't even want to make it I want to lag putt it. Why do you think
Tiger Woods for so many years a seven seven foot downhill putt, he would just cream it right in the middle? Exactly. Because the guy didn't
care. He was like, if this doesn't go in, either I'm going to make the next one and if I don't,
I don't care about that one either. I'm either winning or not. That's what matters. And you know
what's crazy? Tiger will always be one of one. But think about what Scottie has done in like a
three year span. He has blown Tiger's earnings out of the water
in that period.
Tiger had to keep going and going and going
just to make whatever, it was a lot of money.
But Scotty made such a massive amount of money
in such a short period of time
that he could look at it and say,
the $4 million that's going in my bank account next week
doesn't do it for me anymore.
Which is wild to think that. Crazy, crazy. All the sheets going in your bank account doesn't do it for me anymore Yeah, which is wild to think that crazy crazy. He's going in your bank account doesn't do it for big time
All right coverage of the 153rd open from Port Rush on overdrive brought to you by Subaru
You want to knock out some picks here because we got you

hate his clothes but I love him on this course Bobby McIntyre. I love Bobby Mac. I
was gonna pick him. You know who's got the worst actually the worst gear on
tour and I was watching with the Scottish? Fitzy's got the worst gear. Oh
yeah? Not Jason Day? No. Jason Day at least he's like trying to perform. He's
he's got a style that he's trying to put forward like fitzies got a
gray pant with a
off-gray shirt that's
Size 23 sketches
Yeah, but okay, let's have the weirdest look man. It's the most strange gear going is fitzy
All right, you got Ludwig, Bobby Mack, and you got
Rory. I'll take Scotty. I'm going to take two Liv guys out of the gate. John Rahm and Tyrell Hatton.
I'm taking John Rahm. Those are good picks. John Rahm and Tyrell Hatton. Go ahead. Give me two more.
I got to go with Xander. I think he could be trending in the right direction.
Zander I think he could be trending in the right direction and
I just I don't know why I'm addicted to this guy. Yeah, you know what? I'm not gonna do it I was gonna take JT, but he's just so inconsistent. No, I know
Yeah, and I guess so also I actually thought about I won't do it though. I'll go I might do it
Don't take speed. You're not taking speed. You know, he's not winning. I
Know so I just took
Xander, I'm gonna take Morikawa, I don't know. I'm gonna take a couple more guys, I'm gonna
take Spieth and I'm gonna take Tommy Fleetwood as well. You're taking Tommy? Yeah, Tommy
Fleetwood, he might choke it away on the last day, but you know what, maybe, because he
finished second the last time the tournament was here and throw in Shane Lowry for me, too
All right, you know and then give me a Canadian and then I'll wrap it up from there. You make it a
Maybe Cory Connors a lot of wind. I think he can strike the ball
Good wind player Cory Connors. Okay. I'll take fitzy with his great gear. I'll take fitzy if he's standing there
I'll take Nick Taylor
I'm gonna take Patrick
Cantlay who I don't love but he's gonna be a contention and Keegan Bradley.
I'll take Keegan Bradley to wrap up my picks. You gotta give me Keegan cuz Scotty Vail will be

We got roleplay coming up.
Darko Ryokovic coming up as well.
The Raptors are, they're a wagon at the summer league, man.
They're an absolute wagon.
No other way to put it.
So we'll catch up with Darko and get his take on what he's seen out of some of the young
guys and you know, life without Messiah.
I saw that there were pictures circulating last night that Keith Pelley's down there he's in
Vegas he's in Vegas yeah I guess he was there last night I believe it was last
night now what was interesting suit guy in Vegas which I think if you're like if
your president CEO of a major corporation is it mandatory suit like if
you're gonna be out in public representing the company or could Keith not get you know
I throw on a golf shirt. It's Vegas
Relax a little bit you could but I kind of like that
If that guy's not gonna be suit guy all the time who is gonna be suit guy all the time, right?
Like yeah, you got I guess it's kind of perma suit guy
Yeah, if you reach that level of status. Like I always am like I can't believe like the older people like you know my grandfather's
generation they just wear long pants and button-up shirts every day.
Oh yeah.
What?
Oh yeah.
35 degrees.
That's just what they do.
That's what happens.
Crazy.
That's how you operate.
I want coaches back in suits.
I want that NBA sideline suit.
I agree man.
I don't like the little athleisure. It's way too much like they get it in COVID the bubble and then they're all like, none
of us are going back and they'll collectively just agree that I want NFL coaches and suits
again. Big time. Give me that serious. Big time, man. I totally agree with that. Suits,
it's just, it looks, it feels more professional. It looks, it's the big time and you're in
the NBA. You're wearing a quarter zip. hockey like the the relaxed dress code now for hockey
Yeah, don't do it guys are gonna wear suits to games. You should what was the wording on that adhering to modern dress standards?
Is that how it was something ridiculous? I'm sure Gary Batman was like pardon. What is it? Fine? Just give it to him
