Final Hour Overdrive continues powered by Fando bringing you everything from the opening
line of the final score. Is that Jennifer Hedger pop in? Like that's a big deal, man.
Hedges is as big as it gets around here at TSN and I love Hedge like I consider like her a friend of mine
Not just a colleague like I love Hedge
So when she came in here though, I knew she had no interest in coming over to say hi to me
Keegan Matheson's in here when he's around everyone's like I got to come see Keegan. I gotta meet Keegan. I gotta say hi
Well, you Hedge is down at the ballpark a lot. Yeah in the playoffs
I think you'll see me and Hedge coming up here as long as the Blue Jays keep things
interesting. Beautiful.
I'm just enjoying my one day of being the shiny new thing.
Yeah. Next time I'm going to walk in here, someone
will spit on me. Oh, no one will care. The next time you come, it's like, all right,
cool. Good to see you. Like, well done.
We were talking about like the YouTube chat and the DMs and the tweets. When I first started
like filling in on Overdrive,
I would get texts from buddies,
guys coming out of the woodwork I haven't heard from
in years, like, hey, whatever.
I haven't gotten a single text the entire show.
No one cares anymore.
Nobody cares.
But for Keegan, people care about Keegan.
One more day in the sun, fellas.
You know what's amazing?
One thing I get a lot, which I don't know,
I don't know why the impression would be that I'm a short guy, but when I meet people that are like
fans of the show, they're all almost invariably they're like, man, you're so much taller than I
thought you'd be. I thought that the first time I met you. Everyone has me pegged as like a five
foot five loudmouth. Dude, you are way taller than I
thought you would be. There we go. Like Keegan, what are you, 6'3"? About, yeah. Like I had
you pegged as 5'5". Now that we have it on the air for everyone. Now that we've got that
on the air. I thought you were this big. Oh yeah, because everyone only sees me from here.
Yeah, exactly. And thank God I'm not 5', because I'm a bigger dude. I need the distribution.
That's what I'm saying. I do this big this wide and I'm like that's Keegan. The
beard looks phenomenal but you're six foot three. He always talks about it how
he's like he's running hot and it's there's a sweat happening. We are. But
didn't realize it was like this guy's the diesel. Yeah. Keegan Diesel. The big
diesel. There we go. That's you man. I like it. Now it's great to have you in here and we're talking about another mutual friend
of ours in online dating and stuff. I saw, I just saw someone sent me this, someone tagged
me in something on Instagram. There's some guy in this guy, he needs to sue somebody.
Like this guy needs to sue somebody. The guy we're talking about? No, no, no.
Not the guy we're talking about. Another guy that has gone viral because his Tinder stats are out.
He's swiped right over 2 million times and he's gone on one date. Come on. And somehow this has now gone viral.
Like his profiles out there. And I'm thinking, what the hell did this guy do to why is that out there why is that public but if you're in that
position and you're swiping right that many times and you can't land it you
land one day you're batting one for two million who was this person who who is
he that's what I want to know I kind of now I'm really intrigued who was the one
I kind of feel bad for even better question no me too but that's what I'm
saying and that's terrible like that percentage is almost impossible
to bat one for two million and this guy's
His stats are online now like wipes per day per hour
I think outrageous swiping better than one for two million if you catfish
Yes, you can accidentally catfish someone and do better than one for two million his profile
Must be the worst profile thing is I've seen the guys pick seem like a you know decent looking
Wholesome guy is he one of those guys that like matches with people but can never turn the match into the date or
Possibly or is he like is he swinging at pitches?
He shouldn't be swinging at you know, like his swipes are like dude just, just get serious, man. Start, you know what I'm saying? Like you're
swiping. But there's not two million, two million people that would be in that,
that category. I hear you. I can't explain it. You know, put the ball in play. Put
the ball in play. Get your singles. Yeah, exactly. Every once in a while hit a double. Make contact.
Do your thing, man. You'll hit your home run. But yeah, disappointing for that guy.
I'm disappointed that those statistics are out there. but yeah disappointing for that guy I'm
disappointed that those statistics are out there disappointed and disappointed
in our friend who got catfished yeah he's claiming catfishing which is I'm
not sure I'm believing that and I often wonder like would you because like again
the online dating thing I've never I've literally never done I've said this on
this show many times I met my wife on New Year's Eve that's another thing if
you go one for two million how about trying to go meet people?
How about shut the account down and I don't know, go to a bar and start talking to people.
This guy can't even send a message. He's going to go talk to someone and give it a shot.
Like what are you going to go? What's the word? One for three million at the bar? You might
as well give it a shot. But I think online data, it exploded like the day after I met
my wife because we've been together for a long time.
But like the idea of the catfishing,
I would guess there's a lack of self-awareness
that on the other side, they're looking at you being like,
dude, who do you think you're kidding?
Right.
Like you gave it off like you're six foot three
and you're chiseled and you like,
I don't think guys would know if the girl was like
Dude, you're you don't fit your profile. There'd be no self-awareness on the guy's side. No, no, I'm I'm exactly
Said I was gonna yeah, I nailed my profile. Are you yeah exactly? Yeah, the pictures aren't misleading. They're just terrible
Yeah, exactly. It's your fault
2016 we're living in 2025 now. That's your prop, not mine.
Like I think, I would guess guys have no self-awareness.
That a lot of ladies are like,
can you believe this guy pretending with that profile?
No chance.
We have another mutual friend who's not the tallest guy,
but I guess someone he knows
uses a picture of them together in his dating profile
to illustrate that he is much taller.
Oh that's greasy. And he's the prop. Being a prop, that's uncalled for.
That's, yeah. That's, you lose a friendship over that. 100% that's uncalled for.
Like this is over dude. You can't do that. Alright, the Raptors are a wagon at the
Summer League. Like they are a Summer League wagon right now.
They've created 87 turnovers in the three games. They've played
You know, Jacobi Walters been really good Colin Murray Boyles played the last couple of games. He's starting to put up numbers
they're shooting the lights out and
Their head coach the Raptors head coach obviously he's you know in summer league you kind of get to put your feet up a little bit
And watch but you're also I'm, very proud of what you're seeing,
and you certainly have ambitions of your team playing well down there.
And I guess I'm speaking for him, but let's go right to the guy himself. Here he is, the head coach of the Raptors from Vegas, the Summer League.
Here's Darko Ryokovich. How you doing, Darko?
Doing great, guys. Thank you for having me on the show.
Thank you very much. Do you enjoy Vegas? Like, is this a work trip? Do you have a little bit of fun? What's it like down there?
Well, this would be, I don't even have any more evidence how many times I came to the Summer League
in Las Vegas. Probably like 1920 or something like that. So, but it's always really fun uh... i think some of the gives them
amazing opportunity to see
young players to see a little piece to see newcomers to the league
to get to know your team even better and see some other talent
uh... so i i i can never get enough of our last day i spoke to the basketball
park
absolutely
absolutely comes
then it comes to coming on you will not find it there at the bottom of the line and a little
drive by not a slot you wouldn't hit the slots anything nothing
so twenty years
counted every time for like two weeks more or less here
i'm never bedded at dollar all-out that's this discipline that's it that's
exceptional discipline
uh... i'd be the complete opposite of that.
Just stating the facts here. But in terms of the interactions you have, you know, like obviously you're down there and you know this is a really, especially for a young team like yours, you know you guys are up and coming and there's a lot of youth and there's really important players who are playing for you. How often do you get a chance to to sit down with a Colin Murray Boyles or a Jacoby Walter and kind of just chat about the way they're
playing and the way that they're feeling about things? Well I'm around the team all the time.
I mean obviously never practice games. I think it's a great checkpoint for us in the middle of
summer to have those side conversations as well. I had a breakfast meeting with Colt Murray-Bowles this morning just to catch up
on things to see how's everything going for him. Obviously it's a big transition coming
from college to professional level and just giving him some of the tips, what the rest
of the summer needs to look like for him and how he can continue growing.
Well what have you seen out of him that leads you to believe that
Colin Murray-Boyles can have an impact in his rookie season and
actually you know supply you legitimate minutes as a Raptor in his
rookie year? Our front office did a really good job
of selecting players like Colin Murray Boyles
and Elijah Martin this year
and also getting a Chucky Heberno on the two-way deal.
I think all of those three players
that they have gotten the same characteristics
and that they're really, really
high level competitors.
And our identity and how we want to play and how we want to dictate things in games starts
really with a good mindset and starts with good characters.
So I think Colin is obviously did play as is the end of the
college season and uh... finding some really those games but
game-to-game he's he's finding ways to
uh... figure game with that which is rebounded is that which is uh... play
making ability passing ability uh... finishing
there is a lot a lot of talent there and there is also at the same time a lot of
work to be done uh... to who done to help him to continue to grow.
Darko, you head into the summer and now things start to percolate here, you get to summer
league. How much do you start thinking about what your team is going to look like and maybe
where you guys can be in the standings come next season?
Well, I think a lot about first part of the question, where we act as a team, how we can
maximize the talent of the roster we have, how we can continue improving on defense events,
how we can make strides and improve on offense.
And that's definitely every day on my mind. And I'm meeting a lot with coaches and then front office
and anybody that can actually give me ideas or thoughts.
And we really trying to learn a lot.
What's next for us this far is for standings.
I don't spend a second thinking about that.
For me, everything is just to be just to focus on the things that we control and
that's the daily output and the daily work that we put in and how we're going
to prepare every single day for the training camp and the preseason.
And then we take it one game at a time and really put our team in the position
that we can win
every single night in NBA. That has to be our goal that every single night we
gonna step on the floor with ambition and desire and capabilities to win the game.
Darko, now that you have gotten a little closer to getting some some healthy
Brandon Ingram minutes for your team, now you're getting to know Ingram a little
bit better as a coach.
How do you feel about how he's fitting into your roster? Not just on the floor,
but around your younger guys as well? I think Brendan Ingram obviously is
already established NBA player, all-star player, player that has a lot of talent.
And I really, really believe that best basketball
for him is ahead of him.
He's entering his peak and I believe for the next seven, eight, nine years that he's going
to be really playing on a high, high level.
At the same time, he's such a humble guy and a good person and just like simple guy and
that's what all the players in our team that's what I love about him
he he's really excited to be on on the young roster
with young guys they're playing hard and I think he's gonna be really really
good fit for us. And Darko when you look ahead going from
summer league into camp eventually it it looks like you guys are starting to
stack up talent at some positions here I look at Murray Boyles and Mogbo I look at Brady Dick
with Walter and going down the depth in your roster Sandro Mamoukaleshpile
a lot of these guys that you are stacking up now what role do you think
competition is going to play for you this year maybe more so than last year
and how that can get a little more out of this roster, young guys going head to head?
I think competition is healthy.
Sports in itself is constantly competing, competing with the opponent, but also competing
with yourself and constantly trying to reach new levels.
And sometimes you don't know how much you're capable
of doing it unless you have somebody who's forcing you to stretch your limits
and I do think that we have way deeper roster this year and I think that that
competition that multiple position is gonna be very very healthy for us and
it's gonna take us to another healthy for us and it's going to take us to
the higher level. I think it's going to help individually and I think it's going to help
our whole team.
With Darko Ryokovic, head coach of the Raptors down in Vegas for Summer League and you know
one of those additions in terms of adding talent and depth would be Brandon Ingram of
course and you know you acquired him last year and he didn't get a chance to play yet he was around the team and I'm
curious what you've learned about Ingram that you maybe didn't know prior to him
being a Raptor and and how much you think he can help your team this year
he uh as I said he is established NBA player He's been in this league for 9-10 years now.
He's a prolific scorer. I played against him so many times and he was he plays, he plays very unselfishly.
He likes to play team ball and that fits in our style really well.
I think our group is going to raise his level of the performance and I think he's going
to perform on a high, high level this upcoming season.
So I think it's a great fit
for him and then for us but he is the guy that really loves Toronto. It's amazing his
love for the city every time and he was visiting the city he fell in love. I'll tell you one
thing he does love oxtail so if I can lure him into any restaurant that has oxtail, we're going to have a great meeting and great to get together.
Okay, I like that. There's a lot of good spots in Toronto that'll hook him up. I mean, I think he's going to be very, very comfortable here. I don't think there's been a lot of you know chatter about the 87 turnovers your team has I guess created through a few games of the Summer League and when you when
you see a stat like that and you see a play out how much of creating turnovers
how much of it is skill and how much of it is will? Wow that's a really good
question it's both but it would be really,
really hard for me to put percentages on the one and the other,
but just will without skill is not going to get you far away and just
having a skill and not having that will to do it over and over.
It's not going to get you far away.
So you do need to have both of those skills.
I'm going to lose that use that library with my team. You need to have a skill and the. I'm gonna use that line with my team.
You need to have a skill and a will.
I like that, sounds good.
Yes, get that on a board somewhere.
Baby, you know what?
If you ever need a little coach appearance,
Brian will come to a little talk.
Motivational speaking to the team.
You know, speaking of motivational speaking,
like we all saw the news with Masai
and this is the first time we've had you on
since the parting of ways between him and the team.
You know, what can you say about your experience in dealing with Masai and what you learned from that?
Well, I'm always going to be grateful for the opportunity that Masai gave me to be a head coach of Toronto Raptors.
I think that he is an exceptional professional.
coach of Toronto Raptors. I think that he's an exceptional professional. You know I think he did a very good job with the team but in professional sports
situations like this always happened and all we got to do is stick together and
continue moving forward. That's what he would want from us as well. Does it
affect your day-to-day? I'm like I'm curious how often Masai was in the coaches room talking
with you
you know last season?
I mean he was not a lot in the coaches room but we were constantly
communicating and having discussions about the team and what's
next for us
you know but day-to-day uh... things uh... for us they
don't change much for focusing on uh... preparation for practicing for the games
uh... focusing on our guys
and really trying to go about the business as usual
all right dark on the wire twenty bucks for on read for me on your way out of
vegas please
uh...
so i was good thank you for doing this.
Appreciate it.
Thank you so much, guys.
There's Darko Ryukovic.
Incredible restraint and discipline.
That's amazing.
20 years in Vegas, not one penny on the felt.
And I'm not a big number guy, but I like the action.
I'm just as happy down at the Golden Nugget on a five-buck table.
I don't need to be doing anything big.
Me too, man.
I just need that little kick. And to do that year after year, wow that's
impressive. He's a better man than I. You land in Vegas your skin starts to itch
you're like I gotta do something. Yeah. Even if you're not a huge gambler like
you said you're just like I gotta see what's going on. Yeah there's action man
it's itchy. It is. The felt is calling
your name. Like what is a wild sea? Like Vegas, like it really doesn't sleep. And the amazing
thing was like the last time, I think the last time I was there, we were working. So
we weren't doing much. Like we were, we were preparing for the, we brought the show down
there. Yeah. So I was up early and I probably went down there, grabbed the coffee at 8 a.m. and there's people in and I'm like I'm gonna
go just I'm gonna hit the roulette table for like an hour. When else you're gonna
be able to do it? Yeah exactly. And that's the mindset I get into in Vegas. We often
have the MLB winter meetings or stuff like that. Yeah. And I'll be walking down
from my room on the way to the conference center and I think to myself
when else am I gonna have an opportunity to smoke this cigar at 7 a.m.?
I'd better do it right now.
Now's your time.
That's the most shocking thing.
The most shocking thing is smoking in the casinos.
You don't prepare for that.
We're so removed from that.
And when you get there and you walk in
and you're hit immediately, that takes some time
to readjust to the world of smoke.
There's something about this where it's like, this is so Vegas.
I did a game, I did a Habs game this year.
I think it was a noon game or a 1pm game and I was taking the red eye home that night.
So naturally, you go back to your room, you can only keep it even if you get late check
out to like five.
Like I got to kill four hours
go to the the encore I'm like I gotta play blackjack for four hours yeah you
know like I have to I'm up a couple hundred bucks but I still have three and
a half hours to kill so what the hell am I gonna do I'm gonna lose this money
because the longer I sit here at some point I'm losing and guess what it's all
gone yeah exactly it's all you break even and you kill time it's a perfect
marriage I paid whatever I paid just to lose money and kill some time
I'll breaking evens a massive win you in Vegas cost of entertainment and you just need to get out of the right time
You either need to get out of the right time or you need to have that sobering moment at the right time
There's you know, the guy crying in the bathroom or something, you know
There's always that one guy you've seen who's had a worse loss than you and you know he's afraid to call home.
That's when I kind of... That guy's in the sports book and he has been losing. He's
on baseball. He's been losing every single game. He started with five grand,
ten grand, fifteen grand and it's his $20,000 game and he's chasing it.
And he's sweating over like the pirates and the Padres in the afternoon but you know what is a good trick a psychological
trick is to go into the sportsbook and play a future bet so that you're leaving
thinking I could still win money in the future like that like that's that is a
sneaky little play where you know whatever you're down a few hundred bucks
go find something where the odds are gonna add up to more than that and put sneaky little play where you know whatever you're down is a few hundred bucks
go find something where the odds are gonna add up to more than that
and put you know what whatever it is i'm gonna bet scottie chef would win the
masters next year and the one
but on a box on that
and leave with the ticket
they gotta wait awhile to see the cash is but if it does you like i got
Vegas took me a while but i got you it's called investing yeah exactly you know what it is called and that's right that's
playing use me i'm an adult i'm investing if you play the long game in
Vegas your screwed tables gonna get you know they keep the lights on you play
the long game at home beautiful you gotta get you get that ticket alive the
golden ticket and the MGM or whatever the like and that bastard i know he's
got that ticket the The beautiful thing.
All right, best bet still to come.

I saw actually Dave Naylor. I was with Dave earlier today. We're doing some SportsCenter stuff on Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen. We've been doing like
quarterback questions week on SportsCenter. It's been great. Rookies have
all reported, right? Rookies are here and the big boys are showing up later this
week. It's almost go time in the NFL crazy though
It's like middle of July and we're talking about it gearing up, but it's true. No, we're getting there
it's once you get to the Hall of Fame game, which happens quick you blink and it's September and
Labor days early this year. So the NFL season begins a little bit earlier than usual
It's gonna come quick and then the NHL season begins earlier as well And you were talking about this off the air that with the Olympics being back in
play, very condensed schedule for a lot of teams. Yeah. Yeah. Like so most teams are playing four or
five games in the month of February. So that means there's a ton of back to backs, there's a ton of
three and fours, there's going to be a lot of weeks where teams are playing four games in a week. It's going to be like load management might be a thing.
There's going to be a lot of like picking and choosing here. And not to mention like
all the best players are going to be playing in the Olympics. Right. So there's, I don't
know, there's, there's probably going to be nights where the star guy that you want to
see just isn't playing. Yeah. Just the reality is you just got to get to the playoffs
with guys feeling healthy.
Like what happened with Florida.
They were resting guys down the stretch,
all of a sudden playoffs hit and everyone was ready to go.
It's going to be, the schedule is going to be
a big talking point this year, I think.
Big time.
Like, and it'll be great to have the Olympic games back
to have all the best players back there
and experiencing that again. But you're right about you know just getting in and I
wonder if the Leafs have a different view because they never win the division
and won the division since 99-2000 I don't think so it meant something and
then they played Ottawa they were gonna avoid Tampa or Florida which I do think was
obviously beneficial to them but I wonder now that they've checked that box
like this winning the division matter as much like we're talking about the Jays obviously beneficial to them but I wonder now that they've checked that box
like does winning the division matter as much like we're talking about the Jays earlier it'd be massive for them to win the division yeah be a top two seed avoid the wild card that's huge
they never do that they won the they won the ale east in 15 and since then prior to that was 93
like it's 93 92 93 15 done Jays Leaps wons won the division. Game five at home. They got stomped. Right. Game seven.
This is why you win the division. Yes. Game five and you get game seven. Maybe don't worry
about it as much. Humped both times. So and they won game six when they had to on the
road. So I guess yeah, it's great to win the division. You don't want to play Florida in
the first round. I think it was it's more situational. If you looked at the standings and you said, well, we have a chance
to play Ottawa and we can avoid Tampa or Florida. Clearly that's a win. Obviously, right? But just
to say to win the division, just to do it, it really depends because you could not win the
division or you could win the division and have to play Florida. It just, it depends who you're
going to have to play really. Yep. It's a big're gonna have to play right big part of florida is that
everything goes back to florida you know it's fortunate division or down the
stretch and i i can
be that conversation being more and more about florida's this year goes on out
any addition that's made
are they going to address that top six what to do with the cap space what
happens with this and that
it's all about florida at this point when you get
that's
high up in the league and it's at a certain point
It sounds a little rudimentary and basic, but it's just that's how do you beat Florida?
There is I can't think of another pace car like that in sports right now
Yeah, like the Dodgers maybe represent that maybe the Dodgers in baseball like I was gonna say
I'm gonna say the Chiefs, but that's not even so much a
and baseball. I was going to say Kansas City. Just a bit to the Chiefs, but that's not even so much a stylistic. It wasn't exactly shutting down one dominant thing they did.
Even when Sean McVey really had the Rams going, when they surged out a bit, but the rest of the league caught them so quickly.
In terms of a pace car is the exact word for it, because Florida's just obviously better than everybody right now.
They're so clearly better. So much better. Do you remember when LA won their Cups?
I was playing at that time and it felt like there was this, around the league, we're going
to try and do what LA does.
We're going to play big physical heavy hockey and that's going to win us.
And teams abandoned what they were doing to try and copy LA.
You can't copy LA.
They were who they were for a reason.
Now we got Florida and I feel like teams have maybe
learned from that and said,
well, we can't just copy Florida.
They are who they are.
They're one of one.
We just gotta be the best version of ourselves
and hope we can beat Florida
if that's the path we have to go down.
I don't know how you can just say,
we're gonna try and emulate it,
even though it is a copycat league.
If you try to copy Florida, five other teams will, but a smart team will figure out the
next way.
Yes.
And you'll be behind in that race.
Whether it's trying to play heavier, play lighter, play wider, whatever it is, it's
gonna be man chasing Florida, but it's like we've seen in the NFL a lot.
I think the NFL is a great example of this.
Stylistic.
We're seeing more of the running game now. A couple years ago was more about airing it out.
Are you copying one another? And by the time someone catches up, the league's past you.
Yeah. Man, the league's blown right past you. Good point.
Why it's a it's a it's something you can get stuck to because it's it's gotta all be about Florida.
Yeah. For every team, no matter what you do, but it's dangerous.
Well, but there's there's also just simply core values of every winning team in every sport, right? Like you reference the different styles of
offense in football, but you know what has always been constant? A great
offensive line, a great pass rush, great quarterback, great coaching, you know what
I mean? Like that's it's the same thing in hockey. Like if you have size,
you have grit, determination, if you got toughness,
goaltending talent, you know in baseball you got grit, determination, if you got toughness, bull tending, talent, you know, in baseball,
you gotta hit home runs, you gotta have guys
who can strike people out, like it's,
yes, there are different ways to massage that,
where the pace car is ahead of you in those categories,
plus, plus, plus, in other areas,
but there are core fundamentals that you just, you can't overthink. It's just the
way you win in the sport. Timely goals. Yeah. But I just, I have vivid memories of Pittsburgh
winning those two cups and it's like, whenever they needed a goal, they got one. Yeah. And it just,
it just happened that way. And Florida was the same way, but Florida would kind of wear you down.
But anyways, like with, with this, this whole schedule this year, it's going to be
a grind for guys, especially the star guys who have to go not to Montreal and Boston
to play games. They're going to Italy and they're playing for two weeks. It's going
to be a grind.
Yeah. And you would presume the Canadians in particular are likely going to be in pursuit
of gold, if not a bronze. So you're playing every single game.
Hard, too. likely going to be in pursuit of gold if not a bronze. So you're playing every single game hard, you know, and hard and the expectations are high, the pressures
high, the Americans, same kind of thing. You don't want to attach yourself to one
of these teams and be the team that flopped. You know, like if you go over for
Team Canada and it's the first time they're back at the Olympics in Sochi, I
know we had the four nations, but first time back at the Olympics in Sochi and
it's like you're the team that flopped
That's not what anyone wants to be associated with and that could be Canada that could be the US that could be Sweden
So on and so forth. Yeah. Yeah, there's gonna be a lot of a lot on the line, man
It's a big legacy moment for a lot of young players, too
Like even guys who aren't like relatively young McDavid's not he's been in the league for 10 years but he's never played in the
Olympic Games. Yeah. Completely new platform for him. Yeah. Like that's like
the mentality of McDavid over the next 12 months is gonna be a fascinating one.
Losing back-to-back cup finals. Now you got to figure out your contract. What are
you gonna do? How long are you gonna stay? How much do you want to take? You
know, because he can take whatever he wants. He could get up to 20%. I'm sure.
I'm sure the oilers would be uncomfortable with that. They'd probably try to push back and be like,
can you take a little less? But it's the ball's in his court. If he wants it, he's not going to.
It's not going to happen. But that's, I'm sure, something he's thinking. Do I, you know, take
something closer to Leon? So it looks like, hey, we're in this together, is it a long-term deal? But then, you know, beyond that you're still
pursuing your first Stanley Cup which he's got to get. I've said before and
I'll say it again, nobody in North American sports needs a title more than
McDavid. That's judge included, although judge isn't far behind
considering the team he plays for. He's got to have one, but McDavid's number one.
But then you got the Olympics right there where if you're not going to get that cup,
and I don't think mentally McDavid would ever be thinking like that. He's still in
his prime. He's still the man. He's had cup final experience. They're a very good team.
He has legitimate ambitions of winning and I'm sure he's got dreams that he thinks he
can still fulfill. But in the back of his mind, he could be thinking, if I don't get that cup, I better get a gold medal.
Yeah.
I gotta get one of those.
Yeah.
And you only get every four years to do that.
And the next time you go in four years, you're 33.
Yeah. 32.
Like you're different.
He'll still be great.
He'll still be great.
Will he be the best player in the game?
There's no guarantees.
It may be.
Probably. The gap will be closer. Yes he be the best player in the game? There's no guarantees. It may be. Probably.
The gap will be closer.
Yeah. It'll shrink.
Like it feels like this Olympics,
like this is the McDavid Olympics.
That's his moment.
This is his moment.
Whether it's a Stanley Cup or it's an Olympics,
there's a moment.
Not to mention like you talk about McDavid
and dealing with the contract.
I think there's going to be like this internal audit
by him on where are the Oilers?
Like are they, do I see it happening with this team? Forget about
like his deal, like are they actually making the moves or does he feel like this is somewhere where
they can not be a dynasty but like win year after year? Like that's another thing that you're
constantly thinking about as well, not to mention the fact that you want to perform during the regular season, you want to perform in the Olympics, and you're thinking about what your deal should look
like.
Like what is your position look like?
A lot hanging over him, man.
A lot hanging over him right now.
Now, listen, heavy is the head that wears the crown.
Like if you're the king, you're the king.
And there's all eyes are on you and they're going to wonder what you're thinking, what
you're doing.
And he does a pretty good job of kind of shielding all that. Yeah. Like he,
he doesn't wear his emotions much. That's why,
when you saw the access into the room last year in the cup final was kind of
astonishing because never heard him sound like that before.
We live in a little bit of a bubble here when it comes to hockey and McDavid,
like the judge winning a world series in New York. It's pretty high on the list of wow moments. And what it would do for his legacy.
We're talking about like one of the most marketed logos in the history of sports.
It's like Cowboys, Yankees, I don't know. He's the captain. Someone in soccer,
Man United, I don't know. But like that's as big as it gets.
You have to win one. That's more of a national conversation already it
everyone knows judge across major league baseball across those major markets
everyone knows mcdavid of course but there's hockey fans in nashville in
florida and l a all around saying okay we we've heard a lot about this guy this
canadian guy we see that he is most talented but it gets to that greatness
conversation are you the most talented, but it gets to that greatness conversation.
Are you the most talented?
How does championships factor into that greatness as well?
We're going to have that conversation forever with Aaron Judge if he doesn't win one.
That'll stick around forever.
Because it's so expected that the Yankees just, they're supposed to win.
The almighty Yankees.
They're the Yankees.
They got more money than everyone.
They got more resources than everyone.
Everyone wants to be a Yankee, so why don't you win every other year?
Exactly. Dan, if you have the best player. You know,
like I was doing a Sports Center with Steve Phillips earlier and Steve said he believes
he's on pace to be the greatest hitter ever, but certainly within the Yankee organization,
which is wild when you think of Ruth and Garrag and DiMaggio and Mantle.
That's big.
Yeah.
I mean, Jeter wasn't like a, he had 3,000 hits.
He was a pure hitter, a great hitter.
Judge is a better hitter, but Jeter's got the aura of, you know, captain, two, short
stop, all those rings.
Quite the Rolodex.
And a Rolodex that is greater than everyone else combined.
That's aura right there.
Like Jeter's got the aura.
Like he's got gift basket aura.
That's a, and if, for those of you-
Two million swipes, two million dates.
Two million swipes, he was batting a thousand.
Imagine he just popped up on Bumble
and it's like there's, there he is.
Jeter.
Although like now it wouldn't do,
but like cheater in
97 in New York on tinder would have just been outrageous
Like just to watch his statistics. I would sit there and be like I'll pay money for that Like where can I subscribe to watch cheaters tinder statistics in the late 90s in New York?
He's sitting behind him on the bus like going to the stadium or going to the hotel and seeing what is popping up on that thing would be wild.
I need access to that.
I need access to it.
All right.
31 years ago today, a guy by the name of Dennis Casey Park saying, oh Canada, had to be for
the first time ever in his career, had to be the last time ever in his career.
Once you hear it, you're going to remember it.
A little homage to an anniversary.
Let's play it.
O Canada, our home and native land, true patriot love in all thy son's command. With growing hearts we see thee rise. The
true and strong and free. From far and wide, O Canada, we stand. Get them with the mountain.
Sounds like a Christmas song.
That's exactly what it is. Canada we stand on guard for thee
God keep our land
Glorious and free
In like the normal and
He's letting it come through him right now.
Are these?
Dude, he spent so much time on his hair.
Yeah, the big finish.
Look at, the best part about this
is he thinks he hammered that.
He just admired.
Like he's like, do you know how great I sound?
Yeah.
And how great I look. That's great. And there's like 40 people you know how great I sound and how great I look? And there's
like 40 people in the stadium. Was that in Vegas or Baltimore? One of the two. That was a CFL game?
Yeah, it was a CFL game. They played down in Vegas. Yeah, they had Vegas and Baltimore had a team at
one point. I remember Baltimore. Yeah. That's my favorite genre of anthem. We get them a lot on
the road covering the Blue Jays where you can tell never to that extent never that beautiful
But where you can tell that they've only recently been assigned it right and they know the words
But there's always just the wrong tone at the wrong time dada instead of dadu, you know, and it's a man
Oh, man, those and the ones where
The singer is clearly trying to have their moment. Well. They think it's their American Idol season one moment.
Someone's going to be in the stands and discover me.
Yeah.
Wow.
But that guy was going to launch a career.
You should be there Simon Cowell, like the old Simon.
He was actually interesting.
A long time anthem critic.
Absolutely.
Oh man, it's the worst.
It's like throwing out the first pitch.
You either do it and no one pays attention or you do it horribly and everyone goofs on you. There's the worst. It's like throwing out the first pitch. You either do it and no one pays attention
or you do it horribly and everyone goofs on you.
There's two options.
Yeah, that was in the tune of Oh Christmas Tree.
That's what it is.
That's what it was.
Christmas Tree, that's what he got into that,
which again is wild because it's Vegas.
And I don't know, he just started going down.
He went off to Vegas.
Middle of summer Vegas, and this guy's singing
Oh Christmas Tree with the lyrics of Oh Canada. But he hit that last note and he was so happy with himself. He's jacked up.
Percentage chance. He's like everyone's gonna be. Everyone knows that. I nailed that. Nailed it. Percentage chance he was a little banged up.
Very high. Yeah. Yeah, I think it's probably pretty high. Yeah. There's a chance he was at the casino literally all day.
You can never,
never there's a chance he was at the casino literally all day
asked me to stop drinking literally nick hage in vegas singing oh canada
dude i forgot to ask i can't believe we're this far into the show i haven't asked you this
how you doing without the trop
man it's tough
you know what? yeah we miss the trop
you love that place you take like really nice pictures of it
i know you appreciate it beautiful stadium, number one, because I'm selfish
and it's a great place to work.
You pull up, it's like going to a local ballpark.
You just park up against the stadium.
Some old guys in there and I say, hey, I'm a baseball writer.
He said, get out of here. Go.
Come on. Go ahead.
You walk in. It's like you're in a carpeted basement.
Everything's quiet. It's calm
You're in full control of your day. There's four people there. Nobody's bugging me
They were selling pieces of the ripped up tarp roof at
George M Steinbrenner field by the time I was there they were sold out. I find them come on I was considering fellas like cutting off a little edge of the old trop roof
Maybe sprinkling it in the shot glass or something. Yes, and just letting the trop live within me forever
I like you know, it could have caused some negative effects
But I had your orange juice every morning out of it. There we go out of the trop
Little drop out of the tricot, but I miss it man as you should Steinbrenner field is a hot hot hot place
Yeah, that's not they need a they need you got to have a dome down. You need a dome down there
So the nail gun is
Texting me that he was there live
He was one of the 40 people in the stadium to watch and hero Canada amazing
And he said he sang it the next week in Hamilton as an invited guest
So I guess it like it was such a big story. People in Hamilton were like,
we've got to get this cat up here. Like, get the hair up here.
To sing O Christmas Tree.
To sing O Christmas Tree.
Maybe it wasn't hated at the time. Maybe only time has given us this perspective. Maybe
people thought he'd elevated it to a different level.
Right. Now it's baked in a little more, we're more cynical.
Now it's cool to hate it. But at the time, perhaps they thought he'd invented a new
article.
Yeah, Vegas franchise home opener. That's why the nail gun would have been down there like hey
we're going to Vegas which didn't last long. Again home opener there's 40 people there that was
probably a bad sign. Vegas CFL what an era that must have been three down football in Vegas baby.
And I guarantee you all those coaches were hitting the felt. They were not like Darko. They were not
like Darko they did not have the same amount of discipline.
They were in a dark place, nevermind.
Very much so.
All right, best buds coming up on the open.

or wherever you get your podcasts. but he's so good. Again, it's Liv, but he's been in contention the last handful of majors. He's won twice. He's a great player still in his prime. I'm still on John Rahm. Tyrrell Hatton was in the
hunt at Oakmont. He was right there. Yes, he runs hot, but he's playing great. He's playing great
again on Liv, but again at the majors, you get 33 to 1 on Tyrrell Hatton and Bob McIntyre 40 to 1.
Bob McIntyre back over in Europe and
doing his thing. He loves it over there. Corey Connors plus 175 for a top 20. I
like that too. I think Connors makes it kind of think he's in the hunt top 20
again plus money. I'll take it those are your best bets powered by Fandel. All
right so the MLB All-Star game is now officially behind us and as you pointed
out Keegan like the Jays come out of the hot come out of the gate here pretty hot right like they got a pretty substantial
schedule coming up. They got a man Giants Yankees Tigers I honestly think the
Orioles are gonna start playing some better baseball too man this is a hard
stretch and it's a hard run for them because the rest of baseball right now
is looking at the Blue Jays waiting for them to expose themselves as frauds
mm-hmm that's what they're waiting for the rest of baseball right now is looking at the Blue Jays waiting for them to expose themselves as frauds. That's what they're waiting for. The rest of baseball is not used to the Blue Jays doing this.
The rest of baseball is looking at their run differential and saying,
eh, this shouldn't be going that well.
And the rest of baseball sees Santander doing nothing,
Vlade just being okay.
They're waiting for the bottom to drop out of this.
I don't think it will, but that's what the rest of the league is chasing now. You have the Yankees chasing them.
The Red Sox are suddenly really, really good and the Rays are always going to be
annoying. And this is going to be one hell of a race and it's a division race.
Not a wild card race, that does not interest me, but a division race and this
is their opportunity to show that they are a
serious baseball team. I love it. Yeah. Let's get after it here. Yeah. Let's get
after it. Let's see what Ross Atkins and company have in. A little 2015. Exactly.
Got to make some magic happen between now and the trade deadline. But all-star
break it came came and went quick. You know like we're into mid-July now like
it's you're you're we got 67 68 games left
yeah final 66 here coming down the stretch there's never much of a break they dropped the mlb draft
in the middle of the all-star break as well which kind of clutters it up man when you come work for
three hours in the middle there we go how much of a break could it be yeah how we feeling man good
run good highlight of it felt been outstanding what we have great Avenue I don't think I've gotten the show cancelled yet now we have just
witnessed someone from the island of Nova Scotia go three hours without
swearing yeah yeah so a lot of the unders they're cashing right now fellas
this has been great I love it it'd be tough to get this show cancelled for
really tough when you consider what you have said on this show and the different directions we've taken. It's inspiring. Yeah, it's tough. Exactly, it's tough.
It would be quite the accomplishment if you were the one to get us canceled.
It would be. Right? Like that kind of, you talk about big plus money. One hit wonder.
Yeah, that would be an industry thing like that guy. Man, Keegan. That guy got overdrive canceled.
That would unfortunately parlay into me getting the
second biggest contract in the US behind Stephen A Smith, and I would have a
two-hour block on some big network. I love it, man. You and McAfee battling it out.
Oh, who can be sweatier and scream more? I love it. You can't beat that. Just got to wear a
sleeveless shirt. No sleeves. Yeah, no sleeves. No sleeves next time, man. Just make
yourself very comfortable. I'll slowly get more casual as we do these things. As you should. As you should. No, it's been great
having you in, Frankie. Great seeing you too. Yeah, buddy. We've got Jay's again back in action a
little bit later in the week. We have the NHL schedule coming out. Thanks to Darko joining us
from Vegas. Where he's not gambling. Never put a dollar on the felt or in a slot machine. Nothing.
In 20 years down in Vegas, man. That
is incredible resolve and discipline. I got a great appreciation for that.
That could just mean he's an absolute shark.
Or exactly. He's trying to get the radar going.
Yeah, there's a...
No, I don't think...
I'd sprinkle a buck on that.
Yeah, Darko's in the high roller room right now, taking down Castillos.
He's a poker guy. See, he's a poker guy. This is poker face.
Could be a poker guy. Yeah. All right, right boys good seeing you guys. Thanks for doing this
