Tim Kirchgen of ESPN later this hour, we just saw the Dodgers, Yankees, Dodgers took two
of three.
Otani I believe had 15 home runs in the month of May.
He's on pace for 60 plus and might start throwing again by the end of the year.
Aaron Judge just mashing out in LA.
He's been mashing all year.
I don't know why they would risk him pitching.
Just take what you got.
You got an MVP in your hands without the pitching.
So what are you doing?
It's a great question because that is what a lot of people are wondering.
Do you risk him blowing his elbow out again and then what happens to his bat?
What if you lose that with it?
I would be compelled to pitch him just because you're talking about a guy who's that good
at throwing.
It's not like this is some novelty where he stinks and, you know, I want to pitch because
I'm a superstar and I get to call my own shots.
I know, but is there any way they can say, okay, you're going to pitch but it's not going
to be, you're not in the rotation, you you're gonna pitch, but it's not gonna be,
you're not in the rotation, you're gonna be skipped,
it's gonna be okay, I don't know.
He's not going out there every five days for me.
That's what complicates things.
Do you want a six man rotation?
Do you have a scenario where if he's skipping starts,
what does that do for his arm, for his rhythm?
Do you want him coming in out of the bullpen in games?
How does that affect things?
I don't know.
Dude, imagine a guy that can hit like that and then also says to the coach, by the way
I'm a starting pitcher.
Right.
And watch this, I'm going to rock up 10 Ks today.
I'm going to go out and dominate on the bump.
If you thought the hitting was good, watch this.
It's crazy stuff.
It's phenomenal and that's why I desperately want to see it like there's a selfish entertainment
value conversation in there where I want to see a pitch because it is so unique like when
he is doing that there's nothing else like it.
So Tim Kirkjohn will join us in about a half an hour on that more on the RBC Canadian Open
which obviously tees off on Thursday. Unbelievable field man. I was reviewing it
this morning. You know the Memorial was a great field. The US Open next week could
be a great field. This is right there. Like with McElroy playing you get all
these great Canadians. You got Oberg. You've got Shane Lowry. You got Justin
Rose. You know, Saeed Tagala's
up there, Sammy Burns.
It's loaded.
It's a loaded, loaded field.
And we will be there as of Wednesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Overdrive will be there.
And the first up crew, they set the scene and set the tone as of this morning up at
TPC Toronto.
And here's one half of that program.
Here's our main man, Carlo Coliaciacovone joining us here on Overdrive.
There he is.
Whoa, look at that shirt. I love that sweater, buds. Where'd you find that one?
What is up, boys?
Okay.
Is it free?
Had to be free.
This is what I got for witnessing Mr. 64 with the hat tip.
Potentially 66. Congratulations. So I figured I was coming on. You know, the face off. It was partner Mr. 64 With the hat tip potentially 60
Congratulations, so I figured I was coming on. Yeah, you know the face off. It was partner golf. Oh dog
Can you please I've got I've got better news for you
Wow, I went back and I reviewed the scorecard
now I sent a picture to doogie and
From my knowledge if cart now i sent the picture to do d and
from my knowledge
if do you think in all this up sack rayon what it would it would be a great
way to we played apart seventy two
not apart seventy
because if you remember so that's not going on a lot of all it is good news
it is good it is good news. It is good news.
You know why it's good news?
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Hear me out, old dog.
Hear me out.
Because on the scorecard on the GGID, they had, if you look at it, it says we played
from the white tees.
We played from the black tees, buddy.
Black tees are a par 72, and they recorded three of your holes wrong.
You see the eagle you got on 15 where you tried to drive the green?
That was a birdie.
You see 13 when they had us playing it as a par 4?
That was a par 5.
And you see number 7,
where, hold on a second, hold on a second. Remember number 7, I almost hold it, I almost got a hole in one?
Yes, oh here we go.
Three of us birdied that hole, including you.
And on this scorecard, on this scorecard they say you got a double bogey.
You didn't have a double bogey that round!
No I did not, I did not have that
But anyway, what are you getting at?
Oh, you you had nine birdies and one bogey
Okay, so if we were a par 72, that's 64 if we were a par 70
Do the math buddy
If we were a par 70, do the math, buddy. Still the same amount of numbers.
Do the math.
I don't, I really think you guys are confusing this.
No, I'm not.
Like somebody is trying to figure out.
Okay, Hayes, Hayes, I heard your first segment.
Yeah.
We were keeping score of Lawton and Lorenz's score, and Lawrence and Lawton were keeping
our score, and then there was a young woman that was following us around with an official scorecard right and at
the end of each hole each guy was saying what they got so she had to input all
the all the scores on it so clearly she got oh dogs wrong oh of course she did
okay here's here's let me set the record straight right now i don't even remember the holes.
Buddy, I'm trying to help you out here because on the scorecard it says you got an eagle.
It's a wrong score.
That means you got a birdie.
And it says you had a double bogey in this round.
You didn't have a double bogey.
I witnessed the golf round of my life.
Trust me, guys.
I'm not disputing that.
This is Mr. 64.
Okay.
Or Mr. 62.
But here's, here's, no, dude, you can't have different numbers based on what the par is.
It doesn't matter if it's a par 54.
Yeah, it does because it depends, it depends on what T-blocks you play from.
We play from the blacks.
Which ones do you play for?
It's not a video game that you guys, you played them.
Just look at the scorecard.
I submitted the scorecard.
Look at where it says the pars are.
Whatever the pars are make no difference. You struck the ball a certain amount of times whether you're playing a
part 50 or a place seven days it doesn't have a chip tease championship t says
it's par 70 I had we played from the black tease which means it's a par 72
okay old dog had nine birdies and one bogey
Okay, then there is only 64 that would be a 64 here. Here's yes
Well, what are all those numbers add up to minus the X though? That's that they the X I don't understand
There should be a number there. It was no number and that's where you can go. Just put me down for what s
Correct. Yeah, just like the other mistakes on the scorecard with the double bogey and that's where you can go just put me down for what that's correct just like the other mistakes on the scorecard
with the double bogey and i was a little state it was a mistake because we all
walked off the first t
because we spent five minutes looking for scott lot in spalding couldn't find
by the green
and she must have missed her the wrong person say the number okay so we we've
got miss remembering around her first half
all dot i got your back buddy i i i short time i'm not kidding around i don't even care
anymore now you should have a look at this one and i was a little bit of
everyone is a little bit of a minute
because here's the reality
knows you wouldn't necessarily understand this now and i can't that's a
serious golfer
knows exactly what they shot every single
you know what they shot every single hole. You know what you shot. Not Carlo.
I know what O Dogg shot because I was mesmerized by his round.
Because you're fishing half the time and you're doing your own thing.
I didn't fish. I didn't fish.
O knows what he shot. And he can recite I'll bet you.
Yes, 64.
Okay, then he shot a 64. That's what it was was that but you know all as much as i would know i could recite every shot based on
memory what i'd just played
if it's a career i could say off
off one i sprayed it over here
and i chopped it out by two parted part
i need every golfer knows what they shot and how they played
all knows over the final word. Go ahead.
You tell us.
64?
It's a 64 for life.
Guys, I'm not even kidding around.
It could be 75 now.
I really don't care.
No, stop it.
O dog?
O dog, stop.
All I know, this is what I know.
It's all on video.
It's all on video.
You shot 64.
Hang on a sec.
Core, Hayes, all I know is the very first hole I played was the 16th hole. Yeah, I three putted for bogey
Yes
Okay, that's the only blemish I had on the card
Everything else was a par or a birdie and a lot of birdies. That's all I know
So I finished I finished with three birdies and Scott
Oh, you finished with four birdies. Sorry, four birdies Scott Lawton shook my hand and he goes buddy you just shot 64 and I said
okay. That's incredible and that's what it was. That's what it was and that's amazing.
And honestly you want to hear the funniest story of all this? Let's talk about the Stanley
Cup finals. Hold on, hold on, I want to put a bow on this. At the end of the route when
Scott Lawton came to the cart and said oh dog
You shot 64 that is insane. I looked at old I'm like, dude
Are you that's insane? I've never seen a round of golf like this in my life And I didn't want to say anything during the rock is this guy was just on fire haze
I've never yelled bang so many times on the golf course. Okay. All right as we're driving off
He turns to me and he goes you know what I don't even feel like I played good today
I'm like hey oh last time I played with you you're using a different putter Is this a you skin a new putter? He goes first time today
pulls out a new putter the zero torque spider from tailor-made and rolls in a
64 it was clinical case dismissed this guy was I love it
Clinical I love it. It's a lot of leafs were there. I noticed about Willie and his brother winning the thing dude
I'm not kidding you William Ny william and his brother winning the thing did i'm not kidding you william neil and earn his brother
showed up
fifty five seconds before t off
they had slippers on
it looked on to hit a ball
they won the thing
and i think they had that's what they did they want to think
page on the playoff hole
they were sharing the same wedge.
It was like they had seven clubs between the two of them and they went out there and won
the tournament.
All right, well that might need to be reviewed.
I get the impression like some people need to review that.
Anyway, all right, Carla, where are we at here with the cup final?
Where does your head go first when you consider we're back where we started this time last year Edmonton Florida you know looking at
this series and looking at the playoffs as a whole is there a better home ice
advantage than what Edmonton has right now the wind their their wind total
would suggest that the answer is quite obvious. Just the atmosphere that's in that building playoff time.
And I think the difference this year in this series for the Edmonton All-Uiers is that they're starting at home.
Because last year they got off to a rough start, didn't play their best in the first two games in Florida.
And even sometimes in this year's playoffs when he didn't play their best at home
they found a way to win cuz that crowd man
that crowd is is literally an extra man on the ice and i think this year like
i would have to the playoffs and i said l a was going to steamroll over them
then the next round
i said that it was going to lose
today is there the next rise that it was a little sad that i've been wrong about
it in this whole playoffs well
okay then let me ask you this something to try brought to you by boston pizza
canada's favorite sports for this playoff season boston pizza is planning
the parade and has a new all-star play of menu for you to enjoy
for pizza pints and backdrops visit your local boston pizza today
who do you think is going to work
edmonton
or for at your local Boston pizza today, who do you think is going to win? Edmonton or Florida?
I think Edmonton is the team of destiny this year, man. Really? The question I just asked
myself is I've heard a lot of people try to predict this series and everyone's saying
it's going to seven. In game seven, the games in Edmonton. I think that's very significant.
I agree with you. They lost game seven on the road.
I'm the only one that doesn't think it's going to go seven.
Everyone's like, oh, it's just got to go seven games.
Doesn't have to.
I don't think so.
No, it doesn't.
It doesn't have to.
I just feel like they are pretty evenly matched.
And I don't know.
I'm more worried that both these teams are playing Unreal and it's not gonna be like knock em, drag em out hockey.
Like they might be two one games
like that game seven was methodical, right?
Like it might be, we might be looking at that.
Now you're gonna have a blow out here or there.
I just think that.
And that gets us to Skinner for me, Jamie,
because he got it to game seven last year
and guess what was the Stanley Cup winning goal?
It was kind of a flutter wrist Sam Reinhardt
So that's yeah, so it's almost like he could have solid performances
But if he has little blips and games like that it could be so costly
Like he's just he's got to be dialed in because you know the other guy at the end if he can lock it down four times
It's pretty tough man. I think of all the energy that
Edmonton
had to use to come back into that series.
If you go back and watch game one and two,
it didn't look like they were in the game at all.
And I just don't see that happening
with this year's Edmonton team, especially because they're
starting at home.
Well, the other thing that I pointed out,
when it comes to goaltending guys,
Darcy Camper was up for the Vezna, ezna right he gave up five goals once this season against Edmonton
they got to him it was five goals three games in a row that was it curtains
Aiden Hill stabilized down the stretch and all of a sudden Keynes running them
over Hyman all of like they get to Aiden Hill and he's off his game and he's
pissed off and fighting them and doing all that last last series Jake Otten him over Hyman all of like they get to Aiden Hill and he's off his game and he's pissed
off and fighting them and doing all that.
Last series Jake Ottinger statistically was the best goaltender.
He had eight quality starts.
He was dialed in, goal saved above expectation, all that.
Ebbenton found a way to get to him.
That's the only thing that if Ebbenton, they'll find a way to get to Bobrovsky
because Bobrovsky is nails like he is. And he gets stronger as
the series goes on. But you know, I gave the advantage to
Kemper, I gave the advantage to Hill and I gave the advantage
to Autinger. And when it came to goaltending and head to head,
and all three of those guys are going to be watching the games
from home with what's what's your mini Jerry's we see Calvin Pickard in the cup final?
I think you'll see him.
He might be mop up.
Yeah.
I don't know man.
No.
I honestly think that that is out of the question and you can't see him.
Like if you see him you got problems.
But they wouldn't be where they are without him.
I mean what kind of a way is this?
Dude I get it. He was
a fabulous, like he was a major reason. Yeah. He was Scott Darling. Yeah. Not Scott Darling.
Is it Scott Darling? Yeah. Scott Darling. He got, he went in there and won the series in
Nashville against Nashville. And then Corey Crawford got the job done after that. But
that's, he's, you don't want to be seeing him anymore.
Well, you're right.
Gru Bauer started the playoffs for the Washington Capitals the year they won.
Holtby came in.
It was Gru Bauer that they went to to start.
Now, the difference is Skinner started here, got pulled because he was horrendous, and
then Pickard went in.
If Pickard doesn't get injured I think he's
playing game one. Like that's something we'll never know. But if like... Game one of the last
series or this one? No I'm saying Pickard got Wally pipped. Dude like Skinner was never going
in for Pickard. He never lost. You know what were we saying? They play better in front of them. They
have more confidence in Pickard. It's crazy how that situation broke down. Skinner went in because
Pickard got injured. not because he played poorly.
We could legitimately be in a different universe here where Pickard is like, many jerseys the
other way, man if you see Skinner you're toast.
Pickard's a guy.
But he got hurt.
And to the credit of Skinner, he went in, played very well in that second round, and
then was unbelievable against Dallas, and now it's completely flipped
you know it's completely flip but i i agree with all i think if pickards in the
conversation
that is they're in trouble that's that is a disaster for edmonton
a disaster
uh... because it's never going to go the other who is it
alex lyon info who's even the backup i don't even know who will that attract
manager exactly doesn't matter it's the most of its you know it's paid manning's
backup it doesn't matter there's not gonna play
bothers the one point
but uh... if pickered is in the conversation that's trouble but i i
don't you know i'm not i hope that's not the case
uh...
and and you just you hope in a weird way goalies
it's never gonna play out this way but but they're kinda like the refs,
where it's just, you don't notice them,
they both play well, they just do their thing.
Let this be the McDavid, Dry Cytle show.
Like that's what I'd love to see.
Edmonton wins because McDavid and Dry Cytle
in the biggest moments just refuse to lose.
Yeah, they do it, and it's gonna be fascinating
because everyone's like, Florida's locked down.
They shut it down on their own zone.
They force dumps.
I'm sure all the other three teams that Edmonton destroyed
were trying to say, don't let these guys have the puck.
Don't let them do this and that.
And they just forced the issue.
And they make you adjust, because they're not accepting,
oh, they're tough in their own zone.
Oh, they're big and strong.
Oh, they're physical. They don't care, man. They're shoving their own zone, oh, they're big and strong, oh, they're physical.
They don't care, man.
They're shoving it at you,
and you gotta react to it.
And against Dallas,
like, McDavid scored that dagger goal.
That was ridiculous goal,
the timing of it, everything.
Yeah, that was a goal.
That was like his statement goal.
That was such a goal.
That was Mario in Minnesota.
Yeah.
That's what it felt like, man. The stop back. Like, he, Odinger, or that was De in Minnesota. Yeah, that's what it felt like man the stop back like yeah
Audinger or that was the Smith I guess yeah in the corner man. That was an unbelievable play
But but you look at it throughout that series they were getting I mean, it's Corey Perry. It was Hyman
It was Kane like they were getting you know getting it's the janitor there 13 what
Yanmar you know like yeah like just guys like that like you know it could be just
as simple as 29 and 97 say not on our watch but they're gonna need depth like
Connor Brown will be back right you're gonna need guys like one right so you're
gonna need these guys because on the other side we just witnessed
it with Florida.
That third line was as good as any line against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
That Marchand line was unbelievable.
Edmonton has to have an answer for that.
Edmonton has to have an answer for whatever Florida can throw at them.
While Maurice said everybody knows we're good defensively.
He goes, we got better offensively.
And he goes, I think we all know the Edmonton Oilers
are good offensively, but they got better defensively.
So they almost like both teams got better
at their deficiencies.
So it'd be interesting to see how this unfolds.
I almost found it just as fascinating
to hear Dry Cytles comments when he was asked about you know the series this year compared to last year and he said it feels like
last year we were just emotionally drained coming out of the Vancouver series. Going to game seven,
two Canadian markets going at it and then having to step into Dallas and go six games it feels like
they haven't invested that much emotionally getting to this point this year than
they did last year which could give them a little bit more of a boost to knowing
that you know they were there last year they tasted it now they're back this year
and the rules are reversed they've got home ice to start yeah the majority of
their group man I mean they are the oldest team in the league but yeah
Dry saddle McDavid the way they're approaching this it does it does feel different
It does look different, but you still got to go out there and play got to go out there and do it
With Carlo Coli Acrovo first up so we got a month until we have answers on
Basically what the Leafs are gonna do this offseason by by july second of may
trades likely made signings
uh... if you're a jump in your time machine and wake up a month today
what do you
hope has happened for the maple leaves
well what i hope happens is that there's change to this group
it's hard for me to commit to that hope because
I'm in the I'll believe it until I see it boat. And I know there's a lot of talk about
Mitch Marner and if I had to guess today, my guess is that he's made up his mind that
he's probably thinking about playing somewhere else
But there's so much that can change within a month
That what if the leafs Coco even if he was like even if he's called and said you know what? I'm gonna come back and be a leaf. Well. What does that mean for the comments that were made by the GM?
We need to change the DNA this of this team and then all of a sudden we're coming that we're running it back
That just wouldn't make sense, sorry.
Yeah.
I don't know, I said this on my show this morning and I think it's also fascinating
that there's a shift in ownership happening here with the Toronto Maple Leafs where Edward
Rogers is coming in and inheriting a majority share of this team.
And I just look at the way the Jays handle the whole Vladdy
situation, where when Vladdy didn't sign an opening day
of camp, everyone's like, oh, he's gone.
He's gone.
And then within a month, they throw him half a billion
dollars because ownership stepped in and said,
sign this guy.
And you just wonder if that same position could be taken here with Marner where
it's like, you know, if you've got 12 different 12 different people at a table trying to figure
that out, that same same idea is not happening. Yeah, not to mention, I just think, I don't
know if one should have an effect on each other. But if they somehow do something with
Marner, then maybe it's the virus that they go just can't, you know, other, but if they somehow do something with Marner, then maybe
it's Tavares that they go just can't, you know.
What if they trade one of the other two or three?
They keep Marner and they look at a trade of the other three.
They're not talking about like, this is ridiculous to say.
They're not trading Matthews or Nylander.
I just can't see it, man.
I mean, Matthews, they're not moving off and Nylander is a year into an eight year full
no move.
Willie's not going anywhere.
I just don't think Willie would waive.
They've never shown at any point a scenario where they felt like they would make things
uncomfortable or they would try to do that.
You know what another possible reality is?
Is that Marner gets the free agency or his group starts sniffing around what's
out there and it's not what he thinks is out there.
And you know, I think we keep looking at it through, and again, this is up to the Maple
Leafs too, though.
Both sides will have a say in this, but we keep looking at it through Marner's lens of,
well, the market and he wants a change and that all may be true and maybe that's already
been determined, like you said said and if it is then it
doesn't matter what's out there he's going and he's gonna go find it they'll
make it work but it also could be about getting the most money period and
there's a chance he gets out there and the rest of the league goes I'm not
paying you a penny more than ranted it makes like you have 12 but that's it and
the Leafs, maybe they
offered him 13. And maybe he snaps back and goes, wait a minute, the Leafs, I can make
the most money. I'm going to make the most money if they want me, if they still want
me at the reported price tag that they were kicking around during the season.
Just as I mentioned, Hayes, are you really after those comments going to circle back
and say, ah, let's just run it back?
I don't think so, but I don't know.
When Tree Living was kind of pushed on what that DNA change means, he just kind of filibustered
and, ah, that's a good question.
He didn't answer that.
I know, but it makes it uncomfortable, or it would at training camp.
If Tavares comes back at some kind of value deal and Mitch circles back and then it's
like, what do you...
Well, then there is no DNA change clearly yes I agree with you and I think tree
living kind of showed his hand there I would think but let me out I guess the
question is if just one of them goes is that enough for him to be able to say I
I changed the DNA I said I was going to and I did it. You think it's got to be both?
Well that's that's the opportunity that presents itself.
That's the only opportunity that presents itself.
I mean I also think that they've, you've got to deal with the Marner and Tavares situation
but you know I think they're looking around the league too and you're trying to upgrade
your team everywhere.
Like I don't, again Morgan Reilly has a no move but if you're
looking at both these teams that are in the finals and saying you know what is the common
denominator that you know yes there's depth up front on both sides all of that star power
but they're D or active and they move the puck. Again that's something that you know
the Leafs don't have an elite puck mover,
you know, and you could argue that.
Yes, that's a totally separate part of the deal though.
Like, I hear what you're saying.
But I'm talking DNA.
I'm talking DNA.
That's what we're just hearing.
Okay, I get it.
But if Marner and Tavares are here and two puck-moving defensemen are here, is that a
DNA change?
I guess that's what I'm asking you.
Does that count?
It's a good question.
Marner and Tavares are back, but two puck-moving defensemen are here too. Is that the DNA change
that he's talking about?
Yeah, I mean...
To me, no.
No.
No.
Because the DNA talks about guys that have been here for loss after loss after loss,
not just two new guys that haven't seen it before. Sorry.
Yeah. I guess we'll find out about a month.
Lots of speculation. Should be a fun month.
Should be a fun month. Alright, RBC Canadian Open, how's the setup at the Rinkhole?
Well the setup is, you guys are going to see, it's awesome because we're there, but you
remember in previous years, like the background, you'd actually see the green on the par 3.
We have no view to the green there in this setup.
You see the background, the stands, you see the T-box, you see the fans that are going
to be there, but we're kind of blocked off.
But it's one of the easiest commutes from the are parking to
the to the booth that we've had in in every year it's literally a walk
so i will take that
they are going to have that of their heads
all you you saw the whole you know that total that goes
on the star booth up top there
yes robot
i mean it's
you'll see it's so it's youave reviews. Thank you for the rave
Of what we're about to look at no idea. It's no idea what we're walking into other than we got good
It was freezing cold this way. I don't look for you guys. It look it's gonna get hot man
It's gonna be hot tomorrow good bring on this beautiful summer weather that we're supposed to get going June already, man
Let's go. All right, buddy 6 a.m. Tomorrow from the rink hole
We'll catch you there. Thank you for doing this always
Mr. 64 yes the lawyer himself guys, you know, you're in trouble when when this guy's your lawyer
Yeah, I love you buddy. Yeah. All right. I have that in my memory forever
See ya boys as you should Carlo Coli Acrovo first up and owes lawyer for shooting 64 TPC
Akivov first up and owes the lawyer. Jays are off back in action tomorrow.
They've won five in a row.
We're playing the major league theme song to start the show.
Let me ask you this.
Schneids, my guy Schneids was saying how important of a team
or a stretch this was for the team to show
that you've got to be buyers.
I'm sorry five in a row against those teams is great,
but I'm not buying and I'm not adding.
I'm not selling assets to support this team.
No way, man.
Well, here's the thing though.
When you give Laddie that money, you go out there
and you acquire a guy like Santander,
who's back on the IL and has been an absolute disaster
this season, VAR shows on the IL, he started the back on the IL and has been an absolute disaster this season. Varsho is on the IL.
He started the year on the IL.
You're kind of committed to trying to win.
They believe they can win.
Oh, okay.
They believe they can win.
Well, part of assessing things is not lying to yourself.
I guarantee if you asked Tim coming up here, would you buy into this being buyers at the
deadline?
He'd say not a chance at all
i guess let's get right to it here is from the sb and here's tim kirk
uh... tim you're presented with the option to be a buyer at the deadline for
the blue jays are you buying are you selling a standing patty you a believer
where do you stand on the blue jays
well you have to buy.
If you think anything other than that you're a complete idiot.
I love that.
Tim, I like that.
I got a real appreciation for that comment.
But seriously fellas, this is a winnable American league.
It has been a up and down start for the Blue Jays and at the moment they're only a half
a game out of the wild card.
Do I think they're going to make the playoffs?
No I don't.
Do I notice that they just beat up on the A's?
Of course everybody beats up on the A's pitching staff right now.
They have a higher ERA than that of the Rockies. However,
when you have already given Vladdy all this money and people are waiting and
people are impatient, I just don't think you can throw it in and say, well,
we can't buy now. We can't buy. When you're in a playoff race,
no matter how weak the American League might be right now. In other words, the Yankees
are good, but they're not great. The Tigers are really good right now, but there are very
few other really good teams in the American League. So when you have a chance to sneak
your way into the playoffs by going to get somebody I think you have to go get him
But you got to be smart
You can't just give up good young players to get a rental that and you're still not going to make the playoffs be smart
But keep your eyes open
Well, and I think that's likely to be the approach especially with this front office like they need to win here
You know Marks for power might be a little bit different. Ross Atkins is in a position where the heat's been on him in this market for a couple of
years and that's putting it lightly.
They've run into injury issues.
Like I mentioned prior to coming on, Varsho had a hammy issue over the weekend.
He's on the IL.
Santander's gone on the IL.
Yet, you also got to look for internal improvement, which was a catchphrase that Ross got buried
for a couple years ago when he kept throwing it out.
Yet, you look at this Addison Barger kid, the weekend he just had, man, this kid's unbelievable.
Home runs every single day, can play all over the field.
You know that one big bat, we kept talking about it, Tim, like the one big bat was supposed
to be Santander.
If it's Barger, and I know it's's early that's a small sample size but if this
kids real
how much can that help
the idea of them being optimistic about the chances this year
well he is a huge element here i was told about a month ago that
this is this guy's chance
to really show right now and he's the one that has to step forward
and start to do something and in the last week certainly he has.
I think he had two homers in the first 35 games.
He's got three homers in three straight games, got an OPS over 800 now.
I mean this is good.
This is good what they're watching.
Now how long can he keep it up?
We'll see about that but this is what has to happen if the Jays are going to stay in
this thing. They're going to have to get some production from people that they
weren't expecting great production out of if they're going to do this. And again
the schedule schedule gets pretty hard now. I mean they don't play a team, at
least a bad team until
june the twentieth when they played a white jock so they're up against it
started with the fillies in it
and a few other challenging teams here so
we're gonna learn an awful lot about the blue jays of the next
you know seven days of not
nineteen days
big time and and i think schneider alluded to that you know you're you're
not playing uh... you know texas, you're not playing You know Texas anymore. You're not playing the athletics anymore
You're getting some real heavy hitters coming through town and you can hit the road and play tough teams
Varsha going back back on the AIIL is a real struggle for them defensively. Also, he's been hit for power
Santander it feels like this is as much about just giving him a breather
They tried that at times even when he was banged up, giving him days off, multiple days
off at a time.
We've seen this before where a free agent comes in and it just takes him a while to
get going.
We're deep into the season though now, Tim.
Are you concerned that, not the whole contract, but the rest of year one for Anthony Santander it could be a write-off and if so
How much of a hit will that be to the projection of the Blue Jays?
Well, I'm gonna give him a little bit more a little bit more rope here because guys hit basically a hundred homers the last
Three years he I watched him in Baltimore the last few years. That guy can hit and
he just hasn't hit yet. Neither has Juan Soto. Neither have a lot of guys. You face
the pitching you're seeing today. It's difficult especially when you're
switching teams. You're switching countries. All this stuff. It's not easy.
Now however, he has got to get this going and maybe a little rest, a little IL stint
is going to help him. But you guys are right I mean if they're gonna win a lot of these things
are gonna have to come forward and they're gonna have to you know be good
the rest of the way because as weak as the American League might be somebody's
gonna get hot in this league and that's where the Blue Jays have to understand
that they're gonna have to keep playing better too. With Tim Kirch and the ESPN.
So we saw Dodgers, Yankees over the weekend, Judge and Ohtani, both of them the pace cars
in the American League, National League respectively.
Yet Ohtani, we were discussing this earlier, we've been discussing it for years.
Now he's coming off another Tommy John, he's preparing to pitch again, but it
comes with risk because if he blows his arm out for a third time, that might have an effect
on how he bats, what happens with him the rest of the season.
So if he doesn't haze, it would be the third time?
Yeah.
There'd be no way, man. No way.
I want to see a pitch. Wanting and making know actually happen or believing it's the right thing or separate
Conversations Tim, where do you stand on this the idea that Otani may pitch again and whether or not he should for the Dodgers
Well, he's gonna pitch again, and I think he should pitch again because nobody
I've never seen anybody quite like him who every
I've never seen anybody quite like him who every movement that he makes every throw every swing every
Time he runs it's all designed to make him the most remarkable player
We've ever seen he is surgical about every movement that he makes And I refuse to believe that he's not going to be ready to pitch when
he starts to pitch. Meaning he knows his body better than anyone, his sleep habits,
all that stuff are remarkable. And once he gets it figured out, I think he will
pitch and I think he'll pitch well. However, if there's any sign of any sort
of issue, like this isn't going to work. First off, he'll be the first
one to say this isn't gonna work and if the Dodgers say it then they'll take him
out and just let him be a hitter because they cannot afford to lose the reigning
MVP's offense which I think will never go away with the way he swings the bat.
But yeah, they got to be careful with his pitching, but I think he will pitch in 2025 and I think he will pitch well. The question is, when is he going
to pitch and how long is he going to pitch this season?
Tim, how juiced up is that environment? Like with Judge and Otani and the Dodgers and the
Yankees, like just, I don't know, that's quite a matchup seeing those two guys going head
to head and just the teams and the history.
Like how awesome is that environment
when those guys are going up against each other?
Yeah, that was a great weekend in LA,
even though there was a blowout on Saturday
and Sunday's game wasn't particularly well played.
Judge Otani, like very few matchups you'll ever see.
So those are the reigning MVP and
they hit a home run in the same game and the last the only other time that
happened was Barry Bonds and Miguel Tejada in 2003 but these guys hit it in
the first inning in the same inning the reigning MVP that's never happened in
the history of baseball and it was just perfect that that's how that series started. Judge
hit a homer in the first and then Otani led off the bottom of the first with
another home run. This is star power at its finest, it's charisma at its finest,
it's the two best players in the game, it's two of the most remarkable players
we've ever seen.
Ohtani being the most remarkable.
And then a 6'7", 282 pound guy who is having one of the great seasons anyone has ever seen.
And they're playing on the same field.
It was absolutely spectacular that weekend in Los Angeles.
One of the greatest players we claim we've ever seen before was one of Ohtani's former
teammates and Mike Trout.
Where is he at?
What is he right now in his career?
Because I know he got injured earlier in the season and he's come back and it just, he
just doesn't... We said some of the similar things about him that we said about Ohtani
right now, but it's just nobody's saying anything close to that about Mike Trout right now. Yeah well he's certainly not
the Mike Trout of old obviously because he doesn't run the same way because
he's had so many injuries. He's not a center fielder anymore. He's a right
fielder and he's just trying to stay healthy and it's it's a bit sad to watch
because he he's one of the greatest players that I've ever seen
I mean not Willie Mays, but he's one of the greatest players I've ever seen but it has really ended here
It's not over by any means. I fully expect him to be a productive player
But an MVP player and you look at him say he's the best player in the game
it's possible those days are over. Granted, where Judge is, where Otani is,
and Mike Trout has beat up his body pretty badly
with injuries, slides, just the way he plays.
But he's still a first-ballot Hall of Famer
if he never plays another game.
That's how great Mike Trout was for the first, say,
eight or nine years of his career.
Tim, on the other side of the spectrum. We just been talking about greatness this Colorado team
I mean, where are you at with them? I mean we we witnessed some
Terrible baseball last year with the White Sox and and this team is making them look like a bunch of all-stars
Like where are you at with that?
Yeah, I find this to be sad fellas.
This is you know, obviously this isn't good for baseball that there's one team that is
this bad.
I mean they are nine and fifty and that just can't happen in the major leagues.
They've had they're on an eight game losing streak now.
They've had four seven game losing streaks already and we're at June the second
they have lost 21 consecutive series dating back to last year that is a major league record
they have been swept nine times already this year and again when they win it's like an
upset and that's not good for baseball because the ultimate
beauty of the sport is that bad teams can go on the road, play a really good team and
win two out of three on the road.
Well, that just doesn't seem like it's going to happen for the Rockies.
So I hope they get this turnaround.
Remember, I covered the 88 Orioles who lost their first 21 games and that was really difficult to watch for the organization the fans the players
I just feel a little bit sad that they've gotten to this point, but in that division
I'm not sure they're going to turn this around anytime soon. No, that's the thing man
It's probably just going to get worse and worse and worse and we got a lot of baseball left to play
Hey, how does it get worse than that? Well, my fans are just gonna say give rid of the team
I guess the volume of it all the thing is they're still selling some tickets. It's a great park. It's a great sports town
There's people showing up. That's what's amazing
Yeah, and that's that's why you can't give up on the rockies maybe on their one loss record but that is a beautiful ballpark i'd love don't
picket amber those fans are really into it and they just need a team that better
than nine and fifty
yes everyone needs a team that's better than nine and fifty yet that is a
reality in colorado right now he is tim kirkton of the esp and it's always
great catching up with you thank you tim
thanks a lot of the areas ten kirkjohn of the sb and
do you just sent this that uh... since may fourth
scotty schaeffler has the same number of wins since the colorado rockies and
nice job
pittsburgh pirates they put out a memo to other teams anyone's available except skeins
well, guess what screens is gonna show you guys whenever it comes because
It's embarrassing. Yeah, like that's the thing like people can point at Colorado and that's particularly ugly
There's some horrendous like the White Sox still a terrible
Baltimore's bad Pittsburgh's awful this year
Yeah Terrible Baltimore's bad Pittsburgh's awful this year Yeah, like when you got a stud like that who can is gonna be known as the best pitcher in the game
Isn't he relatively soon? Yeah, if not, I don't want to try to build around that but you're just like, oh, we're still garbage
So that's it. It's not gonna happen like it's embarrassing Pittsburgh
I don't recall the last time they were even remotely competitive
Like Colorado has has been competitive.
They had the Todd Hilton years, they had different guys.
Pittsburgh had a couple years there right before.
Who was the pitcher they had that they traded to the Jays?
Big righty with the splitter and the curve.
He came and played for the Jays for two or three years.
Anyway, he was in Pittsburgh.
They had some quality years where they made the postseason,
somehow, someway, but they've been junk ever since.
Yeah.
Yeah, I know.
And that's just the reality.
It's ugly, man.
We're deep into the season.
But for the Jays, they're starting to spin it the other way.
Day off today, it gets going again tomorrow with Philly in town.
Best Bet's powered by FanDuel coming up.
Overdrive continues.
TSN 1050 and on TSN 2.
Hazy, just a quick programming note that righty pitcher that was on the Pirates that got to continues TSN 1050 and on TSN 2. sign bernett i was a big signing and that was a massive massive signing remember him and how it at the top the rotation that guy could strike a guy out
he could do some other weird stuff but he could strike a guy yeah and remember
he he his first year with the jays but didn't go so well and i want to say
sign a five-year deal and he had an op that after the third year and his third
year he was on believable
the ops out goes inside so the yankieskees. Like he just knew it. Like he knew it was coming. Pitched
so well you're like this guy's gonna opt out now he's gonna leave finally this
guy's rocking and yeah AJ Burnett. AJ Burnett. He and BJ Ryan I think that was
and Troy Gloss. I think they acquired all those guys in the same offseason.
Like the Jays had some massive like off seasons in terms of accumulating players and talent and they comes with all this hype and
More often than not it hasn't played out. But maybe this year will be different right so I thought there and
Jeff Hoffman and others all right best bets powered by fan duel and
