Jays in Cleveland tonight. Max Scherzer making his return to the Mount tomorrow night.
I'm excited, man. We've talked a lot about Scherzer. Yeah.
You know, we've seen him pitch like three innings, all this build up.
And he's finally making his return it's almost
July which is crazy but he got injured in March half the way through the season
yeah yeah that's a great point like everyone's it almost had the feeling
that this is like two weeks away from spring training we're almost in July
yeah well it went almost July and you're
right Hayes if he comes back and something goes wrong it's like please go
away. Well that's gonna be it. Yeah, like if it's another I gotta go see a
specialist and I can't. There's no Complex League or anything after this. No. There's no time
left. There's not exactly like you gotta know you got Eric Lauer on the mound
tonight who's been really good for them like he's pitched pitched very well. So you know Bassett's gonna pitch,
you know Barrios is gonna pitch,
you know Gosman's gonna pitch.
Like those three guys, they remain healthy,
they give you innings,
they put up relatively good seasons, all three of them.
The reliable guys, those guys are pitching.
Max Scherzer, if he's healthy,
will be a part of this rotation.
But then beyond that, you know, it's up for grabs, man.
And Eric Lauer's pitched very, very well well and he's on the mound again tonight and so it's
not like there's a lot up in the air there's a lot of injury issues I guess
Varsha they shut him down again today because every time he starts running his
hamstring starts acting up again that's tough like Varsha was he has not played
a lot this year did not break camp with the team he started the year on the IL
right when he has been playing he's been hit for power you
know he's a goal he's a best defensive center fielder in baseball right not
available Santander is just like no one even on no one's even asking questions
about what's up the bad side Garcia there's no update yeah it's like they've
just shoulder or whatever wasn't feeling well could not put up any numbers and all we kept hearing was slow start but when it gets warm watch out
the warmth has been here for a while and obviously he's you know it's not
nothing's changing no so Trevor May on that and more in just a few moments I
referenced this Ramona Shelburne of ESPN piece on Sam Presti who's who's been
running the show in Oklahoma city for a long time right
and if that you guys can recall a decade ago
it was the rant
westbrook
but that was their big three
you know and they were a great team at surge of baca they had i think and
repurchase was down there
they made to the nba finals they lost to miami one of the lebron d wade years
and eventually the three of them all moved on in you know a variety of ways and in
different timelines and then he had to start from scratch and then build back
up and now it's like it's Shay who's the man clearly Williams who's a stud I
think Chet Holmgren would probably be like the third guy like these young stud pieces. Right. Wasn't the Paul George trade the catalyst to the
whole rebuild? Yes. So that was like they traded I think Victor Oladipo and someone
else to get George. I believe that was it. Victor went to Indiana and then
eventually they traded George obviously to LA when Kawhi made the choice and
and that launched them into where they are today but this is what Shelburne wrote this time Presti cast
for humility instead of swagger the first three superstars grew too big for
one team and eventually each needed a bigger pot to grow in they were as
competitive with each other as they were with their opponents they had swagger
and ambition and egos the three stars who brought home the Thunder's first championship this past Sunday night
Delight in sharing the spotlight with each other
So much so that man so much so that they bring the whole team into their interviews on the court after games
It kind of like I don't know all the details of the Leafs in the core four
But it like you're starting to hear rumblings now.
Who gets the attention, who gets the accolades, who gets this?
And the Florida Panthers are another great example of that, where they're like, I don't
know if they were crap-talking the McDowell, good McDowell, honestly, obviously they have
a respect factor for McDavid and Dry Saddle, but like, I think they blurted it out, those
guys care about points and all we care about is winning.
Yeah. And it's a massive factor man
It's it's listen and that's the thing about like using the Leafs as an example
Like they there it's starting to come out, you know
I think was dregs telling us last week that you know
The three of them in particular Matthews Marner Neal and are competitive like who's gonna have more points who's gonna score more?
And it's like who cares what the hell you do that's they should yeah try to win yeah you're competing aren't you happy
for each other right and doing whatever you can to win yeah and you know it just
and some of that's probably the nature of the market where these guys showed up
and they were gods day one man yes like day one it was like you guys are the
future you're on the front page of the hockey news.
You're going to bring the cup back to Toronto.
Blah blah blah.
And that just kept growing and growing and growing.
And now Marner's likely leaving.
We'll see what happens with Tavaro.
So he's a bit of an outlier on this particular analogy.
But maybe the thunder, that's the future of the Maple Leafs.
We'll see.
All right. Jay's back in Cleveland tonight. Here is the host of foul territory in the Mayday podcast back on overdrive. Here's Trevor May
What's happening Trevor?
Okay, all right, see if we can get him back on I don't know what's going on there do
This could be one of those scenarios because well, we might start getting tweets where people on TV and on the radio they can
hear them yeah but only we can't it's what just happened before or JPs yeah
could be actually blame JP I think this is a JP or Joe from the bridge play there
are people that will write it all the time they're like we can hear Trevor he
said hi how are you I'm good guys and we can't hear it it's got to be very
frustrating for the audience well he should just hang up then that's
the problem like that's what worries me is if he can hear us and then we can't
hear him or do you know what kind of pull the Jake the loam on us and it
wasn't Trevor May it's like Trevor yeah you know Trevor Hoffman yeah and he said
actually we're not doing
That you missed that last week we referenced that and played it for whatever reason
All right, let's try this again. Here he is former ML beer host of foul territory in the Mayday podcast
Here's Trevor May. How you doing Trevor?
I'm doing well, how we doing guys all good, man. All good. Yeah, we're doing well. Thank you for doing this. We're excited up here in Toronto
because, you know, Jason hit the road and Max Scherzer is making his
triumphant return tomorrow night.
He's pitched three innings this year. Didn't go so well.
He went on. Well, he went on a kind of a search for perfection
of health and his elbow and his wrist and his shoulder and
What what is your level of expectation for Max Scherzer as of tomorrow night?
Well
Having have played with Max for a year my expectations are always
Are always high because I think he sets very high standards for his play and his health.
And I just wouldn't put,
do him doing anything out of the ordinary past him.
But I would say, if we can go out there
and get four or five innings, that would be a big win.
I think he's a guy who really likes to be cooking
on all cylinders right away, but ramping up, I think,
and just like, at this point, it's just eating innings
that is what's needed.
So if he goes through the entire outing feeling good
at the end of it, I would say that should be a smile on
everyone's face.
Would you agree though Trevor like if he shakes his hand one time or grabs his thumb or his
ribs or anything that's probably game over for the whole operation for Max?
I mean it wouldn't be a good sign and it would be an indicator that things aren't feeling
as good as he needs them to feel.
So that would definitely be something that would need to be considered at that point.
You know, time comes for all of us. He's 40 years old. You just don't heal like you used to.
And it's harder and harder and harder just to kind of white-knuckle your way through pain.
You know, the older you get, you got to feel better to pitch well.
And I think anyone who's pitched as long as he had, and we'll tell you that.
So, um, you know, fingers across though, there's, he seems like he's,
he's well aware of what was going on and what the issues have been.
And he's done what he needs to do.
He's one of the hardest workers I've ever seen to fix it to best,
the best of his ability.
So one thing I'm confident in is that make sure there's going to be in a position to
have success.
It's just whether or not it happens.
But yeah, I think that he's going to be watched like a hawk, not only by fans and everyone
like in the booths and on TV, but also by that front office.
So Trevor, we talk about the Jays daily.
What is the perception of the Jays from outside this market and what this team is you know
their strengths or weaknesses what do you like about them or maybe some of the
needs that they need to take a look at? That's a good question. One definitely
even when I was playing before like the last decade or so it's it's they've
always been known to be able to swing it
It's interesting because I feel like that that kind of wasn't the case last year or two
And and some of the pitching has been a little better or at least the starting pitching
But it's a dangerous team. It's a team. You can't really take advantage or you can't
Look past. I mean, I think they're five games over 500.
They're riding the hunt this year.
That's maybe even a little bit better
than a lot of the rest of the league
would have anticipated.
And it's just if you go in and you're not prepared to play,
they just absolutely boat race you for three days
and no one wants that to happen.
So I think that, or at least the other teams don't.
I mean, I guess you guys would love that.
So, for outside looking in, it is interesting
that it's the one Canadian team, sometimes they go
overlooked in terms of watching, you're watching
MLB Network, or you're sitting in the clubhouse
and watching all the other teams.
You know, maybe the Blue Jays aren't in front
of your face as much, but definitely known as a team, as a organization that's going to be
in the hunt there at the end and that they can go up and put 15 runs on you if you're not careful.
And that's been my experience. Yeah, and I think that applies this year. You're right about the
Bats. You know, it was remarkably frustrating last year, even the year prior to that where they made
the playoffs 89 wins, but could not get big hits with runners in scoring
position didn't hit for much power but that's changed a lot you know recently
in the last month and a half there's been a lot of bats picking up Addison
Barger's been huge young guy who's an everyday player now Lottie's heating up
Alejandro Kirk's been outstanding Bichette's been really really good
Springer's hitting for some power and they're in the hunt in the American League East.
You know, they're five games above 500, they're in a wild card spot, they're only three and a half
back of the Yankees, and the American League East, you know, coming into the year, there was a belief
that it would be more watered down than in the past, and I guess that maybe is coming to
fruition, although there's, you you know a lot of teams that are
hunting for playoff spots that play in the American League East and I'm curious
Do you see the Yankees as like a clear-cut best team in the division or do you think the Rays and and now most recently?
The Blue Jays might have a chance at actually catching them by the end of the year. I
Would say yes to that question three weeks ago
I would be much more confident
in saying yes, especially with the way that Rodone had started the season and how him
and Freed have really taken over for the absence of Karen Cole.
But he's come down to earth a little bit.
The team in general has come down to earth a little bit.
The backside of their lineup has kind of slowed down.
Even though Aaron Judge is still hitting 370, he's not hitting 420 anymore.
So the gap has been closed and I would not put it past Tampa and Toronto to make a run
of this thing because it's happened in the past and it's kind of the name of the game
with this division a lot.
Tampa's been on an absolute tear.
I just think it comes down to who gets hot when,
but I definitely think it's winnable.
It's a much closer division than maybe was anticipated
maybe a couple weeks ago.
Trevor, you gotta explain one thing to me.
When I watch Judge smash one,
basically out of ballparks, I always ask myself,
what on earth was the pitcher doing putting that thing anywhere
close to that?
And I know that nobody's a coward in the big leagues, but I just wonder why it's not like
Serrano curveball in the dirt every time.
And it's like, I'm not going to let this guy try to just smash this.
I don't understand the thought process.
Well, there's a couple things going on with Judge and I'll be honest Juan Soto is very similar in this way
I'll even throw a Kyle Schwaber in this in this area
I think actually Schwaber and judge are definitely a closer
comparison simply because you want them to strike out
They swing a miss they have swing a miss and so now that you you know the end and judge will miss stuff in the
Zone and so will Schwab er it's just very specific spots
And if you hit those very specific spots over and over and over again, they'll just be out
Unfortunately, those two guys are have been around long enough and have completely committed to the idea
have been around long enough and have completely committed to the idea, to the fact that they know
how their swing operates, what they can hit the hardest,
and they just made a decision that if a pitch is missed
in that zone, it simply is not gonna be missed,
and I'll take whatever else comes with that.
If I keep getting those really perfect pitches
over and over again, then I'll get out,
but 99% of guys can't do that as much as they need to,
and I'm good I'm
strong enough where I'm gonna get them and they both have they're both hitting
tons of home runs so if you go look at like I look at heat maps for example
where they do damage and where swings and misses are judge has a couple cold
zones that if you just threw it there every time he simply won't hit the ball
the problem is that that spot especially when he's dialed in like he has been all
year that spot is just really small and dialed in like he has been all year,
that spot is just really small and it's really, really hard to do.
And I think that's what he's the reason he's that way. He's that way.
And that's why the playoffs sometimes struggle because he's getting the best
pitchers in the league every single time.
And they're hitting those spots more often than, you know,
the rookies are sometimes in the, in the minor or not the minors in the regular
season. And, and he just makes you pay. Uh, Bryce Harper is another guy who does this extremely well. you know the rookies are sometimes in the in the minor or is not a minor in the regular season and
And he just makes you pay uh, brice harper's another guy who does this extremely well
If you can hit a couple spots every time he'll concede that you get him out
But he knows that the vast majority guys aren't going to hit those spots every time and he's going to crush if you don't
And judge is the best guy on the planet at doing that the former mob pitcher host of foul territoryl Territory and the Mayday podcast Trevor May.
So this season Cal Raleigh's having is just absurd man like he's got 32 home runs he leads
the majors in home runs. I'd love to know the last time a catcher did that this late in the season
if ever. I mean you mentioned Judge all he does is mash Ot tawny mash is they're looking up at this guy
He's on pace for I believe 68 home runs this year. He's got 32. We haven't hit the all-star break yet
You know his OPS is off the charts. He's leading the league in RBI
Mariners are a pretty good team. They're in the hunt to make the playoffs, but
What more can you say Trevor? Can you add to this like how do you put this in a perspective what this guy's doing at the plate it's really really hard to put in
your spectrum because it is that kind of an outlier season it he actually it does
have the most home runs he broke Johnny Brent's record for before the All-Star
break there was like 28 so he did it a while did it a while ago I don't know he
said like four a day at this point or two every day so it could have been a
couple days ago but yes the things he's doing are absolutely incredible.
We've been having the conversation about
who's the MVP today, if it's him or Judge.
Here's some really fun stats for you.
Cal Raleigh has more home runs than Aaron Judge,
which is Aaron Judge is kind of his thing.
So, he's not even leading in that category.
And he also has more stolen bases than Aaron Judge and
he is way better metrics defensively than Aaron Judge and he's an everyday
catcher so it comes down to yeah they're batting averages are you know a hundred
points apart but that is the only huge advantage that the judges had and he's
having an incredible season I think that puts into perspective what Calralli is
doing and also the strike zone was
adjusted a little bit this year. There was a story that came out reported by the Athletic earlier
about changes in the buffer zone for the umpires. And long story short, the umpires have been
incentivized to tighten up the edges a little bit more. And that high strike has very much not gone
away, but it's way less likely to be called or framed.
And that was Cal Raleigh's bread and butter.
He was the best guy in the league at catching those top,
those high pitches and getting them called strikes. And those have gone away.
So that has actually hurt his metrics and he's still in the top seven catchers in
receiving. So I, I just, I can't say enough. And just,
and he's like, it's just a catcher. Like,
just don't
Don't get the love that they deserve
I was on felt territory earlier today with AJ Prudinski and he is I don't think there's a bigger fan of Cal
Raleigh on the planet than AJ Prudinski and I I was
Some we don't agree on on everything but that was one thing we were both very much in agreement on
Stats are crazy. Like you said the grind behind the plate what he does
defensively you know his teams in the high and it's just it's a magical season
and it's it's a magical magical season
he is trevor may and and we always appreciate him finding time for us thank
you for doing this trevor will do it again down the road
or anytime dot
there is former mlb are hosted fallritory and the Mayday podcast.
Doesn't that catcher have like a nickname,
like Big Dumper?
Yes, I believe that is precisely what the nickname is.
Some tough nicknames out there.
There are, man.
Somebody changed their,
was it Dicky the Dick or something?
Yeah, Richard Love Lady, so he's Dicky Love Lady.
He wants to be known as that.
Well, is it for the weekend thing?
Is it the players weekend?
You know how they do one weekend a year where you go by your nickname?
I think that's...
I think it's...
He wants that...
I think it's permanent, Dougie.
Look that up.
But I think he wants to just go by Dickie Love Lady.
That's a tough...
I mean, Love Lady...
It's not a bad name, man.
I mean, listen, it's a throwback.
Like Richard usually just goes by Richard these days.
You don't see a lot of short-forming Richard anymore.
No.
But with a handle like that, Love Lady.
That's great, I mean, what a name.
It is.
Dickie Love Lady out there just mowing down batters.
Yeah.
But yeah, Cal Raleigh, man, like these, for starters, that handle, it's such a catcher's
name.
Cal and yeah, big dumper behind the plate.
32 bombs.
What would Alejandro Kirk's nickname be?
Tim Heron.
Little Dumper?
Yeah.
I don't know if Little's a part of the program for for Alejandro but he's playing well, man
He's very very great. So you're the catcher man
Yeah, but yeah, Jason Cleveland tonight Eric Lauer on the mound and sure is on the mound tomorrow night
All right, Canada back in action tonight. We'll catch up with Stephen Caldwell. Steve. He's down there in Houston. It's hot here
I can only imagine what it's like down in Houston. Oh my god. So we'll catch up with Stevie get his take on the match tonight

uh... that'll be great i mean those are all
the most part acts well within the prime that are going to put on a great show i
i i was reading something in the New York Post had written something or posted something
earlier this morning that I guess ACDC is touring right now.
Oh yeah?
And there's some viral videos and it's not going well for the boys.
Wow, they're a thousand years old.
Angus Young.
Angus literally is just like, oh, boy, oh, and love ACD, so I've seen them live a couple times.
I couldn't do it. I could not pull the trigger on it, man.
And there's like this kind of discourse online where people are saying just you gotta retire.
Wow.
Like you gotta stop. And now they're making so much money and people are buying tickets and they're touring through Europe and I think they're going back to Australia, which is big.
But Angus Young looks like mister burns now
the whole is the hairs all
mangled any rolled out of a dumpster
yeah i get in and he's just an all-time great selling out like massive
stadiums yes but i'm of its a ccdc it's a source longer seen them live
there are no i don't like selling it out of hell they are all around the kind of
like
smaller venues.
They're massive venues.
Yes, massive.
Well, it's not worth their time to play a bar or something.
I'm not talking about a bar, but I'm talking like an amphitheater or something.
No, no, no.
They play stadiums, dude.
They play stadiums, dude.
Because these guys are making hundreds of millions of dollars still.
So I don't even blame them for saying I'm going to do it, but it's... I just saw a
quick video that, again, has gone viral of Angus Young you it's wild to see this guy yes like
you know and he's trying to play and he's trying to sing and keep up it's
just a bad scene man well that being said the stones like I've seen them I
don't know if you've seen I've seen them and I've told you I'm convinced Keith
Richards has not had his guitar plugged in since about 1987 like I'm convinced Keith Richards has not had his guitar plugged in since about 1987
Like I'm convinced he's just going around strumming a guitar. That's not even why plays five strings, too That's I don't know if you know that he plays with five strings. Yeah, it's like a six string like it's just
He I don't know if you have noodles but
once as a monster I
tried to play in a men's league hockey game
i remember thinking to myself
i need someone to have this is this because i have to see what it looks like
because i
was trying to be good like i was trying to give somebody the memory of this guy
used to play in the n h l
could score goals and ike i couldn move. In your mind, you were like...
In my mind, I just wanted to see what it looked like because it was like I had no shoulder
pads on and just an absolute monster barrel hanging over my hockey pants.
You probably still have a rocket of a shot though.
That's the thing.
Yeah, but it was just it was so bad to feel that I
Can't have had I wanted to see what it looked like because it had to have looked so bad
Yeah, well, and that's the thing man. You were you were in your late 30s, you know, like this is different
You know ACD 78 years. Yeah. Yes, like I experienced that at
36 right now So could you imagine doing that in third like in 25 more years you go back out there and try to play with a leaf
Jersey on yeah, I don't know man. It's tough to tell somebody to retire, but you've done enough ACDC's had a great run
I presume they're all worth a fortune. Yeah great band. We all love ACDC
You just I think you got to stop stop i think i'm in the camp and maybe just hang on the call to all could play
forever
that's the that's a guy that probably could use down there in houston we've
got canada versus el salvador tonight the gold cup continuing
and here's our main manner
yes and soccer analyst even called well i don't even
do well guys who would do in god doing all right man, it's warm up here.
What's the weather like down in Houston?
It's pretty warm in Houston, tell you that as well.
Yeah, we're in a bit of a heat wave in Houston as well.
So it's going to be a hot night for the guys as it was
on Saturday. It's not going to be easy conditions to play
the type of football I think Canada excel in,
which is high paced and up and down.
So yeah, I'll have
to manage that a bit again tonight I feel.
Yeah those are always interesting games man when you like and I guess that's coming in
the World Cup like you I'm sure you played a lot of different games with a lot of different
elements whether it's cold whether it's too hot like how would you expect Marsh because
it's a pretty big match for them tonight like how would you expect him to to lay out his
lineup and how does he distribute minutes tonight? because it's a pretty big match for them tonight. Like how would you expect him to lay out his lineup
and how does he distribute minutes tonight?
Yeah, that's an interesting question, isn't it?
Like how does he spread out the minutes here?
Because I think what he found in last summer's
Copa America was that if he plays the same guys,
as you get to latter stages, you start to see that
they're very tired and he sort of wants to make changes,
but you're not going to make changes in a quarter or semi-final
So I think he's tried to space it around this group stage worked in the first game
Obviously didn't work so well in the second game. We'll see what he does tonight
Does he start to go towards his main 11 for the rest of this tournament or does he still kind of chop and change and try?
A few different partnerships knowing that he's highly likely to get through the group, El Salvador, if they win by five goals, I believe it is, to knock Canada out.
So they're in the next round, they're in the quarterfinals, and I wonder if he still
makes changes or if he says, okay, it's sort of knockout football now and he's going to
bed in his best team to play the remainder of the tournament.
Stevie, does he have to be on his best behaviour minus Ps and Qs or what the hell's going on with him?
It's been a saga, isn't it?
Oh, like what the hell, man?
Yeah, he's been a bit of a soap opera guy,
I have to say.
I mean, Konki Kaaf in a lot of ways
make these sort of weird and peculiar rules
and sort of style of doing things
that's different for FIFA or UEFA or most governing bodies.
So I can see why a manager in an organization
would get so frustrated with them,
especially when you're not one of the top two
in terms of Mexico and the USA.
They clearly get favoritism through everything.
And so I think because Canada is competing with them
on the field
and they think of themselves as number one and CONCACAF they feel that that should be reflected
in some of the decisions that are made and they've felt a bit persecuted by that so
you know it's got a little bit childish I think it's wise of Canada Soccer to dial back a bit now and
concentrate on the football, concentrate on the field and hopefully Conker Caffell can take that stance as well.
So I don't expect any more,
Shananigans let's call it on the touch line,
but you just never know if there's a crazy decision
and Jesse Marrs feels like he goes against his team.
He's such a passionate character.
I wouldn't be surprised if he's right in it again.
He's one of the guys, he's probably a bit like myself.
It's hard to stay away from the conflict that sort of comes to you if he's right in it again, he's one of the guys, he's probably a bit like myself, it's
hard to stay away from the conflict that sort of comes to you, and you've got that attitude,
you sort of face it head on.
With Stephen Caldwell, in terms of Marsh kind of like a guy who's serving a suspension and
the reviewing what might have been going on while he was doing that, and you mentioned
the difference between CONCACAF and other, you know, ruling parties around the world. Are you of the impression that
Caldwell, you know, has been warned kind of across the board by maybe Canadian soccer and the CSA?
Like, watch yourself here, even with what you just pointed out, he can run hot, he's a passionate guy,
loves his players, wants to win. Like what would a different looking Jesse Marsh, you know, appear like tonight?
And I guess throughout the rest of this tournament.
That's the balance, isn't it?
It's a hard balance to get because you don't want to lose who you are as a person and what
your personality is because that's sort of why you've been hired and why you've been
successful.
You know, he's been successful so far for Canada. So he's got to find that balance and I think
it's sort of take off the chip in the shoulder a little bit and start to realise that most
of the decisions even themself out. That's what I think. I think when you've got a logical
head on you go, well, we get some for us, we get some against us. You know, you think of the penalty kick at Nations League
where Cornelius got fouled by the Mexican defender,
should have been a penalty, it wasn't given.
That's what sort of led to the ban
because he was furious heading into the USA game.
But then you look at Saturday night
where there was a whistle that came for the crowd
and it came off Saliba's hand and Canada get the decision
because the rest decides it's gonna to be a drop ball instead of
what to the letter of the law should have been a penalty kick.
So, you know, it goes in ebbs and flows.
So I think that they should just sort of get on with it on the field and I don't think Jesse Marce should change too much
but you got to make sure that you're within the laws and within the rules of the game.
So, you know, you can get carried away at times
and you want to fight for your team
and these guys really love them, respect Jesse Marrs.
He's been that figurehead.
He's been that real vocal voice for them in many levels.
But I think it's time now to kind of try
and dial that back a bit and sort of empower these guys
to go out in the field and play and deliver for Canada.
You know, once the whistle goes and you put them out there, it's up to them to get the
job done.
So he should focus, I think, on getting the game plan right and sort of setting up the
best team and then letting them take care of the rest.
Canada, El Salvador and TSN tonight wrapping up the group stage of the Gold Cup.
Here we're chatting with Stephen Caldwell.
Steve is down there in Houston.
And I've seen that TSN has posted a new
episode of Park the Bus, yourself and Kevin Kilban are you know releasing all
these new episodes and there'll be a bunch of them leading up all the way to
the World Cup that again starts in less than a year and I'm seeing the title on
today's episode that was released and again it's an hour long it's a great
great chat great great view you got to check it out YouTube wherever it happens
to be wherever you download podcasts but is Jonathan David a top-10 striker in
the world that is the the thumbnail of the conversation I'm sure you guys get
into a lot of different things but I guess I'll ask that question I'll have
you answer it where does Jonathan David rank for you around the world
when it comes to his striking ability?
So I think there's a shortage of legitimate number nines
in the world at the minute.
We've got a few, obviously, Halland springs to mind,
and you've got Ossie Mayne who was good at Napoli
a few years back, you've got Lewandowski
who's aging a little bit, you've got Iczak at Newcastle.
So there's five or six I think legitimately kind of world class number nines and then
you've got a whole bunch of other guys that are sort of figuring themselves out and where
they fit.
Joachim Gares might be an example of that at Sporting who has scored a lot of goals
in the last few years but he's in Portugal and he needs to take the step and is the step going to be to that kind of bigger league and can he deliver there?
And I think that's the position that Jonathan Davids in, he needs to take the
step and what level is that step? Is it Serie A, a lot of talk around Juventus and
Napoli or is it Premier League and if he goes and scores, goes in, then I think
he's legitimately in that conversation in the top 10. But at the minute I've got him in sort of top 25 and Kevin grills me
on this in part of the bus because he thinks he's a little bit higher but I just still
think that in a lot of ways the jury's out on Jonathan David. He's a top class striker
but is he top 10 in the world? I think he's got to prove it at that next level.
He's got to prove it at a higher club level,
and we'll have to see if he can take his game up a notch or two.
So it's a dual debate.
What he is is vitally important to Canada,
and what he is is the biggest, most important player
heading into next summer's World Cup,
and certainly the leader in this gold cup is the captain
and is the most high-profile player there. So he does most of these talking on the pitch. He's a
great guy. He's a quiet guy who works extremely hard and loves his country. So he'll go out
there again and he'll do his best. And he seems to keep away from the noise that guys
like us create and this kind of question. But I still think as he moves to this new
club in the summer, wherever that may be, he's got to really hit the ground running
and prove that he can go up that notch or two
and get amongst the Hallans and the Zaks
and the Lewandowskis of the world.
So a lot of the discussion leading up to the gold cup was
who's available for Jesse Marsh,
but also who's not available.
We know Alfonso Davies isn't.
There's other prominent players
that weren't available for the tournament but this is a big big
opportunity for guys to kind of put themselves you know in front of Marsh and
possibly play themselves into a position where they're on the World Cup team and
I know on Park the Bus and on other you know things you're doing with TSN
between now and the World Cup next year there's gonna be a lot of that
discussion like we we've got a pretty idea, I would think 70, 80% of the roster, but you know,
how much is still up for debate in your opinion?
And are there any players that you can think of over the past couple of games,
leading into the match tonight, leading into the rest of this Gold Cup,
that you think are possibly playing themselves into the mix as we get closer
to the World Cup?
Yeah, I think as we try and kind of build the profile
in this team and highlight, you know, the sort of,
let's call it 30, 32 guys that can legitimately
sneak into this 26-man roster,
we look at where is that depth
and sort of what needs to happen in terms of a Jaden Nelson
or an Ali Ahmed, a Zorhan Bassong as an example, guys that
were probably on the outside, especially Nelson and Bassong in the last six months and they've
came to the fore, they've done well in the national team jersey, they're doing well at
club level and we're starting to think, okay, they could make it and they could play legitimate
minutes and it's trying to find that consistency at the higher level that's hard for these guys. You know, you sort of have one good game and
then there's a couple where you're maybe a little unsure. But I think that's what a springboard
like a home world cup does for a player. It allows them to dream, it allows them to, you
know, find new levels of dedication, professionalism, whatever you want to call it, and take their
game to a new level. So I think there's real opportunity there for four or five guys. Two
guys that I'll say have stepped up in recent games between the early June friendlies and
the Canadian Shield and then the early Go Cup games are Nico Seguerre, who's been outstanding,
Hajik Splitman has been outstanding at right full back and is
becoming a player that I think Jesse Marrs wants to try and find a place in the 11.
Now I don't know if he's going to be able to do that because you know you've got a lot
of players vying for a position but he's someone that with Alistair Johnson being your sort
of first choice right back you're saying can Niko Sigurd kick him off that place or can
he find
a place somewhere else in the team and can you adjust?
So he's one that's pushing really hard and Saliba is pushing really hard as well, who
reporting from Matthew Shinetti just recently is just saying for Anderlecht, we know it's
coming, he's going to go play in Europe and play in Belgian football and he's been outstanding
for Canada.
He's a guy that for me could push alongside the staccio,
maybe replace Kone in that 11 as well.
So two guys vying for the 11, definitely in the roster.
And then three or four guys that are fighting
to make the 26 man roster.
And the hottest battle probably to finish it off
is in that striker position.
David's in it, David's playing.
And who's going to partner him?
Is it Lahren?
Is it Oliver Shea? Is it Jearran? Is it Oliver Shea?
Is it Jebison?
Or is it Promise David, who's probably in the hottest form
and might just be the one that's going to get
the biggest chance to show that he can knock Larran
off that position and make it into starting 11.
So there's loads of battles going on.
We're going to find it more in the next two or three weeks.
And then the upcoming, you know, friendly games, September, October, November, but I don't think we're going to
know for sure. We're going to debate this. It's going to be debated coast to coast all
over the country all the way until Jesse announces his squad just before the World Cup next June.
Steve, you just mentioned Shinetti and before we get you out of here, he looks like a pretty
clean-cut dude. Can he hammer beers with you guys or does he kind of shy away from that?
Yeah, and then he keeps away from us.
It's too much for him to try and hang with us.
We'll try it for a few hours and then he realizes that it's too much.
We got sent to Vienna before Qatar and Shinetti felt like he needed a new liver when we got
back.
So that was unfortunate.
And I just advised them, don't try and keep up Matthew. Just, just come for a couple and
get yourself back for your beauty sleep. Good looking guy needs his beauty sleep. So, you
know, everyone, everyone's got a sense. You know what I mean? Oh dog.
Oh, I know exactly what you, somebody wants to hang with the big boys and they get a rude
awakening Stevie, a rude one
all right stevie enjoy yourself down there take it easy on our board man it'll be a fun one tonight
enjoy the match see you guys see you know but all right there he is steven caldwell i love how i
could see stevie caldwell and kilbade like carrying shinetti and throwing him in a garbage bin and
saying stop don't ever try yeah what do you who do you think you are?
Who do you think you're dealing with?
He tries hanging for a few hours like those guys are putting in a 12-hour ship. Oh, yeah
Scotsman and an Irishman with Shinetti
Yeah, zero chance. Steve, he told me that him and that Kill Bait man, if they want to hunker down and start
talking football and just old school stories, I think they could sell it as like a like
a Maxim fantasy pack offer where guys would bid to have beers with them.
Oh, that would be incredible, man.
Big time. To sit there and watch a big match
with Stephen Caldwell and Kevin Kilbin.
I think guys would pay five grand.
Like if you got some guy with cash from Europe or whatever,
it would be like, you get a back room at one of the pubs
near the stadium, and it's like,
we're gonna just hammer beers and talk football.
You wanna do it?
Huge market for that.
Especially over here where there are, there's so many like die-hard you know football fans and
these guys were like European nationals yes you know like well I I was walking
various players I was walking with Duffy the other day and he was saying Jamie
like you have no idea how popular those guys are like in the world not just you know like
he's like you know he walked down the street with a hockey guy or whatever he's like in
Canada they kind of hey he goes those two everywhere he goes in the world they get
recognized yeah by soccer he said in Qatar there was an Irish pub and it was so rammed and they
couldn't get in and Duthie just said I guess we got to get out of here.
And the owner of the pub came out and said, are you Kevin Kilbane? Yeah.
And he said, yes.
And he said everybody get in and cleared out right in front of the main bar and
said, you guys are standing right here. Like the guy's a legend.
Yeah. It was like Henry Hill and Goodfellas. Yeah. Like that opening scene,
like through the kitchen, the table in the front. Yeah. Yes. Like Kilbance here and itfellas. Like that opening scene, like through the kitchen, in the front. Bring the table right in the front, yeah.
Like Kill Bane's here and it is go time.
Duffy was beside himself in the middle of Qatar and during the World Cup, a rammed Irish
pub and the guy came out and said, are you Kill Bane? Get in here.
Yeah.
I love it.
Yeah, serious business, man. Well, like again, the Park the Bus podcast that they're doing is awesome.
It's the two of them just sitting there talking about different stories and different, you
know, obviously important topics that revolve around Canada and, you know, soccer in general.
So urge you to check that out.
Every episode up on TSN's YouTube channel.
I think you can find the podcast.

I will take the Tigers on the run line.
I think they win by two plus tonight.
We just saw the White Sox impressively roll through town. Yes. I'm going take the Tigers on the run line, I think they win by two plus tonight. We just saw the White Sox impressively roll through town.
Yes.
I'm gonna take them on the run line.
How'd they lose two, what'd they give up, they won two,
Jay's lost two or three.
Yeah, two or three.
Yeah.
I hate those series when they're rolling.
I know.
And then a junk team comes into town,
it's like just hand them two, it's like come on.
That's why I'm gonna ride the hot wave, man, the hot hand,
and take the White So socks on the run line
We gotta pay a little bit of juice, but they're at home against the Dbacks who are okay

Big trades going on in the NBA. That's just par for the course met like it's
literally it's crazy how many like because we keep talking about it with
all these leagues like cap going up and it's a different world
the nba's truly a different world because this new cba yeah but it's
almost bizarre haze where they're like
totally
truck is skunk sin of boardroom and they're like
hey you want to take these five guys and then they're like you take those seven
guys and it's like it almost doesn't make sense some of them are so big.
I know like there was a big deal today between New Orleans and Washington and
now it's Port Zingas is on his way it's a massive three-way deal between Boston
Brooklyn and Atlanta they're all in East. Brooklyn and Boston are the same division.
Where is Port Zingas going?
Is he on his way to Atlanta?
Yes, he's on his way to Atlanta.
Boston is breaking it up, and this is what everyone said was coming because there's just
so much money on the books, and you've got Tatum, who's likely done for the year anyway.
It kind of feels like the Celtics are just going to punt on the season.
They probably should. Yeah, I guess you're
right. Like at that point, like if Tatum's not available to you, you're
probably not gonna win anything anyway. Right. But yeah, and Shams Charani is saying
NBA teams are showing significant interest in Jalen Brown. Like now the
question is like did the Celtics win a championship? And now they're just
tearing. And now they're just gonna tear everything down? And the Raptors grab
anybody? Where where we at
No, I mean in their name. Well, their name gets used a lot. Yeah, and
Yet, you know miss eyes got that history of being a guy that
Really kind of takes his time and his patience to maybe over values his own pieces, right?
He doesn't want to move off those guys. I don't know but you're right man
It feels like all you got to do is pick up the phone. Yeah, and a GM. I don't know. But you're right, man.
It feels like all you gotta do is pick up the phone.
Yeah.
And a GM's like, yeah, let's make a deal, man.
I get in there in an hour.
Exactly.
What do you got planned?
Six for six, let's do it.
Yeah, let's make a massive blockbuster trade.
Yeah.
And we know it's not gonna be the only deals.
Like there's gonna be more and more trades coming out.
Yeah.
And it's interesting with the Leafs and with the Raptors
and like the city of Toronto chasing these big names
and it was Otani and it was Soto
and then it was Durant there for a couple of weeks
and maybe Yannis for a few days.
Yeah.
Like I'm curious what the next one's gonna be
because there's always someone.
Sam Bennett.
Could be Sam Bennett, Brad Marshawn. Yeah. Kind of feels like Marshawn's the one that's more likely to have people kind of, someone and then it could be sam bennett radmar sean
and i feel like my son's the one that's more likely to have people cut
but that it's not leaving florida i think most people conceded that maybe you
will
but it just doesn't seem likely john wants to cash in more than anybody else
yes so doesn't that feel more likely that the leaves are connected to him and
we can start buying in like it's gonna happen he's coming up here and then he signs in San Jose.
No, but when he signs four years at 8 million you'll find a reason I mean
listen he is a culture changer. Oh yeah. Right? He is a different, you know a different
now at 37 38 or whatever like he is the hell of a play gamble at 37 to give him big money a big term
almost be like a leafy thing where it's like
You want a culture changer to be a guy that you drafted as opposed to paying someone at 37, right?
Yeah, or a culture changer
Trading for a guy that's 26 not like you know what I mean. Yes. I know what you mean
It's a map you could try, it's Doug Gilmore, it's, you know,
like that's.
It was like back in the day where they're goaltending
and FNUF and Kessel, it was like all their key parts
were from other teams.
Yeah.
Bernier, everybody, it was like nothing was homegrown.
It was like we tried to buy it, it's just really tough, man.
Yeah, you're right.
Yeah, and you don't wanna get too carried away
with the like DNA change. Yeah, exactly. and then you start like massive money going the other way
yeah exactly all right okay good stuff today good photo shoot for the boys
