We got Chris Johnston coming up here in a few moments
we certain action tonight bunch of games in the n.h.l. bunch of injury news
through the n.h.l. jack use took a bad spill yesterday man
like that did not look good it looked
you know something to do with the shoulder he left the game
uh...
bunch of plays man i see this all time, and I think it's the like
They've got to figure something out
Where if you make contact with a guy in that five to six feet away from the board's area I'm telling you something's gonna go down where
Yeah, it's gonna be real bad because the rate of speed they're going
And I've always envisioned it where it's like you've got to wait until you get inside a certain area that's
tighter to the board so there can't
be that massive collision, the head first type thing.
I don't know.
You're not going to put some perimeter around saying,
wait till you get in there.
But I don't know.
I see it like the little cross.
Somebody else had a little cross check right before the boards just the other day
And it's like it's the most dangerous play in the game like
Yeah, I don't know how you legislate that out though. I don't either man, but your point like one thing I am
Like Rempey Matt Rempey was at it again over the weekend where he he I thought he should have been dinged for that
Sorry, I know the guy's six foot eight, but doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. I was just a
Here's we never agree. We never we never seem to agree. I don't think that some reason like why is this?
Sorry, not sorry that was in all of my lifetime playing hockey learning how to hit when I was 10 12 13
I've never heard anyone say go in with your arm like this
while you're setting up to hit. I have no idea why his arm was in the air.
Regardless of how tall you are.
I don't know what he was doing. Yeah, exactly. It's totally irrelevant your size. I don't
know why his arm was in the air as he's flying in for the forecheck.
People's Elmo.
Yeah, that's exactly what it was. And Blanken gets hurt, you know, and it was a great tilt afterwards
But also this is a guy who's been suspended
multiple times for idiocy on the ice like doing stuff that is reckless and
I don't know. I I just I can't understand the reasoning for why the guy's arm would be up while he's
Launching into contact there and it's rempey. So I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt on anything
I don't know how he to contact there and it's Rempey. So I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt on anything.
I don't know how he avoided supplementary. This one, my only explanation would be they're
like, man, I want to give them a game or two, but it's Rempey. So I got to give them 15
and I can't justify 15. And this is the issue with the NHL with the, I think the stupidity
of while he's on the books now, so we'll get, it's their books.
They determine what goes in the book,
and it's completely arbitrary,
and that would be my guess.
My guess would be, they're like, man, it's a game or two,
but it's Rempey, so I gotta give him 15,
so I'm going nothing, and now this is what you get.
Is that a reasonable explanation?
Yeah, I just like, I don't know.
I don't like how they do it either,
but I don't know what the way to do it is.
Like I've thought like, I don't know what you think
of this, Jeff, like if they had like a rubric
where it's like you do this, you get this many games.
If you have a history, you get this many games added.
If you've done it twice, you know what I mean?
Like they're supposed to do that.
That's the whole point of what's yours.
Yeah, exactly.
If you got a track record, you're gonna get dinged harder
I think it's already been dinged for like a game. He has he's been suspended multiple times and the last one was eight
It was like if you do it again, you're gone. I mean, it's like this
We have I thought that was gonna be the one to say that's ten
But exactly like what's the point of being a guy that's on the books when you do something like this and they go?
Nah, that doesn't count.
That's not what we're talking about.
But that's what's so confusing.
It's like sometimes your history matters and then sometimes it doesn't.
Like the Matthews thing, like he had never done anything.
He'd barely taken any penalties, but it's like, ah, he's getting two games.
Like, well, wait, you said history matters, but same thing with McDavid anyway.
I like, I don't know.
I don't understand it.
Well, and that's the point when it comes to Matt Rempey that you would, you know, Ranger fans are gonna whine
and complain and say, well, he's under attack.
And yes, because of his own actions.
Like the guy has thrown some goofy hits
throughout his career and he's a dangerous player out there.
And that's why other teams have guys in the lineup
that are like, I gotta go take care of this guy.
No one else has that reputation in the league
that I can think of where the opponent goes,
I have to have someone in like Ryan Reeves
or like whoever it is that can go over and fight this guy
because I'm anticipating he might do something stupid.
And the definition of a repeat offender
that's on the books comes flying in with his arm up.
I've never seen that form in forechecking.
That's Hanson Brothers stuff. Like the Hanson Brothers hit like that.
And everyone, I just think it's been silly people saying the guy's six foot eight.
It's like, what is he like one of the, who are the Bushwhackers coming into the ring?
Yeah.
Just moving it like no one skates around like that.
You tuck your arm in when you're going to throw a hit like it's it's hitting
what a water and this guy's flying in with his arm up like I don't know and I
honestly I do I think the league is like I don't want to give them 15 games so
we're just not gonna suspend them yeah we're gonna pretend like it's okay
joining us down the Maple total hotline here's our PSN hockey insider Chris So we're just not going to suspend them. Yeah, we're going to pretend like it's okay.
Joining us down the Maple Toyota hotline, here's our TSN hockey insider, Chris Johnston.
Can you understand the reasoning from the league as to why Matt Rempe did not get any
discipline whatsoever for that hit the other night?
It came to some degree.
I think the issue is that there wasn't a lot of force delivered
there and obviously he's a big guy.
I mean, it's going to be continued to be an issue for him.
I think, you know, they have communicated to him that he needs to be mindful about how
he's delivering those checks.
But you know, I don't think that was one there was too much malintent and I mean, look, if
Matt Rampe is coming up against me uh... at five foot seven
part of our guys with them
probably no clean way that the finish up a check against me if you're in his
shoes and so i think i was just on the line and and he was fortunate
it didn't have any worse uh... consequences are willing to live or
anymore forcefully
that's a dangerous precedent to say like he's waiting just to skip a little bit
more force.
To me it's just letting the guy off the hook.
I've just seen the way he hits in the past and I just, hits like that man, you don't
deserve the benefit of the doubt.
I think they gave him the benefit of the doubt.
Yeah.
Well, I mean look, I think that is part of it and this is going to come up again.
I'm sure that when you have a player that big that that's playing that style of game I
mean you know he everything he does is gonna be under the microscope because he
has been dinged with a few big suspensions well and that was my point
CJ is because they keep saying the next one's gonna be bigger now they put
themselves in a position where they maybe didn't like the hit but they also
don't want to give them 15 games for it
But if that's the case, what's the point of having this whole repeat offenders thing if you're afraid to use it?
Like if the repeat offenders only while now that really justified 15 games, so I'll hand it out
What's the point of putting them on the books?
Yeah, I don't think they're afraid to use it
I mean in this case they just don't think he crossed the line and that it was certainly,
you know, much different than the Hitties earlier, you know, like they got him dinged
earlier this season, you know, where he was way away from the play, way away from the
boards and in a very vulnerable spot.
I mean, I think in this case, you know, some of it is clearly down to the height differential
there.
So, you know, I'm not as worked up about this one.
Like I don't see a hit that needs to be punished
in that case, but I mean, it does,
what it does remind me, the underline to me is just
everything that Rempe does is gonna be
scrutinized pretty closely.
Yeah, well, and I think he deserves it.
Anyway, with Chris Johnston or Tia Sinh hockey insider, before we got to rep, we were talking
about the Hughes injury, Jack Hughes, you heard anything on him? And you know, what
are they bracing for in New Jersey?
I haven't heard anything definitive. I mean, it sounds like there could be somewhat positive
signs there just in terms of, you know, it obviously looked horrible. But you know, it
was a travel day for the team.
You know, that that play happened right at the end of the game last night.
And so they need, you know, further imaging to get a sense of exactly
what they're dealing with.
But, you know, clearly the entire organization
holding its breath when you have a player of huge standard and given that,
you know, you had a shoulder injury last year in a shoulder surgery
uh... that kept them out for quite some time you know i think that there was
a lot of concern in that moment which is on cheldon keeps reaction you thought
about we should have been called
he was torn out of the game and and
you know but
i don't think that there's any firm
you know i'd be a just yet exactly what they're looking at but as i said
maybe some small hint of encouragement that it might not be as bad as initially
everything looked
CJ Kelly aren't crop coming back. How do you think the Leafs view this?
Player coming back from injury is it like oh wow we've got like our we've made a free trade that didn't exist
And we just got a great player, and he's going to contribute and be a part of the solution here or is it welcome back what are we going to do with you?
I think it's somewhere in the middle.
You know I don't see anyone coming out doing cartwheels and trumpeting this is a massive
development, but clearly you know I think Kelly Yarncrook when he's been on his game
in the past I mean he's better than players at least
have been playing routinely in their lineup this season.
And so to me, you know, the biggest unknown
or the question mark there is what version of you
are you're gonna get?
And I don't just mean tonight.
I mean, as you know, he gets his feet back under him here
in the coming weeks before they reach the playoffs is,
you know, it's been a really long layoff
for a guy in his early thirties, you know,
hasn't played since game seven last year against Boston.
And so, I guess the real point of judgment here
is just seeing what version of him you're getting.
But if he's anywhere near what he's been at his best,
I think he's seen internally as an upgrade on the lineup
to give them some options, especially on that third line.
And perhaps even if there's injuries
can be moved up a little higher than that for some spells.
And we've got a little bit offensive finish to them at times,
but you know, what they like most about them
is you be a very responsible two-way player.
And you know, when we get into the playoffs,
if you start with that third line, I mean,
that's a valuable thing for the team to have.
CJ, speaking of trades, this is your favorite week I know of the year. It's never ending coverage.
So I wonder, is there like a sleeper team out there that you think
might surprise us all and do something that we don't expect? Like every year there seems to be
like, wow, they did that. The old sleeper team question.
You like that? Whoa, we love it here.
Hey, what do we have?'t know we have what we have
who is sleeping on cj
well i mean i'm gonna go to the two most obvious options for that that would be
baguette in tampa i mean those are the two teams
that always seemed to to come up with something in the deadline window
uh... better aggressive and obviously in both cases you have teams that are
trying to
to win the family cup again this year's you know teams that are in the contender position and I think are incentivized to behave
as they have in the past.
But it's tough for me to say that, Jonas.
I mean, sometimes, especially right now, I'm so in the weeds, it's hard to maybe see the
big picture of what's going on lead wide.
I mean, I am encouraged.
I will say that we haven't had really that much activity yet obviously a couple deals over the weekend but you know when you
go back since February 1st I think right about three or four trades that involved
NHL players and so I do think it's going to be a busy few days leading into Friday
and we just need a few more sellers I think to juice up the market and
you know get the floodgates open here. With Chris Johnston, something to chew on brought to you by Boston Pizza, Canada's favorite
sports bar. Enjoy a $15 lunch at BP where you get an entree, a side and a drink and
you get it all in 20 minutes or less. So fast lunch doesn't have to be fast food. See you
for a $15 fast lunch at your local BP. So we've been asking online are something to
chew on brought to you by Boston Pizza. Does the Panthers acquisition of Seth Jones,
and I guess you could throw anything Tampa does
between now and Friday, put pressure on the Leafs
to make a big move?
How would you answer that, CJ?
I don't really think it does.
I mean, I understand where that thinking comes in,
but I don't think it really changes the approach
or anything like that.
It's not as though the Leafs were in the market on that
player you know and obviously Toronto is dealing with a pretty you know infinite
or finite I guess rather amount of cap space and they're just looking to you
know get the best team they can together with with that cap space and so you know
I don't think it changes anything I mean certainly there's a lot of internal
pressure for a GM like Brad true living at this time of year
you know the least look at themselves this morning fourth overall in the
standings I think they feel good about what the teams may able to accomplish
you know especially given some of the injury issues that they've encountered
this season and had to play through and you know but I don't think it's quite
as simple as oh team makes a big move now we got to do the same you know but I don't think it's quite as simple as oh team makes a big move now
we got to do the same.
You know Florida has been on the rise right now and you know maybe if anything it just
sort of reinforces the idea of Toronto wanting to push here as hard as they can to you know
win the Atlantic division because you know likely whoever finishes first seed in the
division would at least avoid tap on floor in the first round
Which I think is a pretty good objective if you're on the on the Leafs end of things right now
How is the league responding to this Matthew Kachuk long-term IR? Hopefully he returns for game one
storyline
Well, I haven't heard too much cynicism about it just yet
I mean, you know certainly we've been down this road with other players in other circumstances
in the past and I think what gives it credence obviously is Matthew Kachuk didn't play the
last 12 minutes of the first game against Canada, the four nations.
He set out the third game by the US and then he played what I think seven minutes total
in the final.
So, we know what that tournament meant to him, how he would have done anything he could
to be on the ice to be a difference maker for Team USA.
It's a gift for the team, CJ.
It's a gift.
I'm not a gift, but it's like a layup where it's like, oh, you're hurt, you're going to
be out for a bunch.
Well, you might as well be out for the whole thing.
Well, you're saying, and I think it's fair, it's a gift at the deadline, but is it a gift?
What version of, is Kichuck going be ready to play on when the playoffs begin?
Is he going to be effective at that point time?
I mean, it's hard for me to sit here and argue the Panthers are better off without him
But certainly it opens up this window now where they can can be adding and doing things
but you know, I want to see what it looks like on the other side because
It's clear that Kachak is dealing with a legitimate serious injury
And you know while they they hope he's back
for the start of the playoffs, I don't think that's a foregone conclusion at this point.
I think he's looking at a pretty significant recovery period here.
Do you think...
Sorry.
No, no.
I was just going to say I wonder how that drives with Paul Maurice last week emphatically
telling radio in Florida, he is playing for us again this season.
Maybe that's just he's like what happened good vibes yeah what how did Paul get that
information if now all of a sudden we're not certainly will well I guess the
playoffs is what they would count as this season I mean look they're they're
they're planning on playing right through till June again so you know I
guess it depends they define that but you know I think it was pretty clear
quite honestly for Kachak leaving Boston that he was likely you know, I guess it depends, I define that, but, you know, I think it was pretty clear quite honestly for Kachuck leaving Boston that he was likely, you know, out for eight
weeks or so at that point in time, at least.
Um, obviously he's gone and got subsequent testing and, and, you know, they've done a
little bit more of a thorough exam on him, but, you know, I don't think anyone, you know,
I don't, I didn't see exactly what Paul said.
I read those quotes, but the truth is I don't think anyone
within the Panthers organization expected him back anytime
soon coming out of that tournament.
Do you think we ever see a day where that's not allowed?
I don't know how they would do it,
but do you think it's something ever legislated out
where you can't put a guy on and then, I don't know,
bring him back for the playoffs?
I don't know how you would do it.
I do think it's possible, Jonah,
it's just because it's been discussed. You know what I mean? Like,
some GMs don't like the idea that you can do this. I mean, it's come up at GMs meetings the
last couple of years. There's been talk about maybe you have some kind of, you know, cap that
governs the playoffs, maybe as a way where you can't dress a roster that has anything more than
what the, you know, the combined salaries would be allowed in the given season.
I don't know what that looks like, but given that we're in a period where the NHLPA and
the league are negotiating a CBA, I do think it's possible there's some change to the system
that at least eliminates this question, because it can get pretty gray, right?
And the crazy part about it is essentially for a team, if they have an injured
player, and it could be Matthew, could Chuck or anyone else, if that guy can play one game at the
end of the regular season, they're supposed to activate them. And there's obviously a lot of
cap implications from that. By holding him out one more game, you get his entire salary through to
the playoffs. And then you can basically have you know amount of salary on the books in the playoffs and it doesn't necessarily make
a ton of sense and obviously we have seen some teams game it as I mentioned
Hayes though I really don't think that's the case here with Florida that the
feeling you know is that that this is something pretty significant that
Kichuk's dealing with and I don't know that we definitely see him roll out game
one of the playoffs and have three points the way we've seen from players
uh... do it in the past and so
you know it's it's a tricky one but i i think we will see a change at some point
because it seems to be
you know a league wide thought that that might be the way to go
with that in mind this is ander kane stories
gonna be fascinating between now and friday because i you know he had a
net everyone first like and i i'd like you know he had explain it to everyone first
like and I'd like to know the skinny on it like is it well he's ready to go and they
don't like when he had the surgery you correct me if I'm wrong CJ when he had the surgery
for starters he had a pretty late right there all summer people were kind of going back
and forth he had it the original time my my understanding was he could be back kind of
early into the new year yeah like that was kind of what they're like four to six months and maybe that January was coming
up and then there was some sort of pushback on that that it was unlikely he'd be back
in January.
Clearly that was accurate because we're into March and he's still not back.
But now it's a scenario where you might be having a little bit of a game of chicken here
where the Oilers probably thinking this isn't our best interest to keep you on long-term IR
until the playoffs and then we can use that money maybe to acquire pieces
between now and friday but i read an article today that there
could be some pushback from the cain camp cj because he wants to play and if
he feels like he can play with eight to ten games to go
he's gonna want to do that is that your gist of it and if so
like what who wins that battle vander cain or the oilers it's it's to be determined who wins it i
mean i think you've summed up the the highlights pretty well there i mean where where some eyebrows
are raised if you might recall is he had a second procedure did it had a knee procedure done in
january after the initial surgery.
And so I think at that point, a lot of people were thinking, oh, okay, this is, you know,
this is something that was done, you know, with, with some eye on keeping them out through
to the playoffs.
But you know, a Vander Kane himself is, you know, put video of himself up skating on,
on his Instagram account, um, you know, to, I guess, show that he was on his way back.
And it does seem as though, you know does seem as though he's trying to trend
towards a return at some point before the season.
Obviously the Oilers are sitting here having to plan their cap in a certain way.
There are a lot of contending teams considering adding players, adding salary at this deadline
and need to know where that's going to go.
Where it's ended up now is they've at least started gauging what the market might look out on you know potential
moving came because he had a full no movement clause that turned into a 16
team no trade clause essentially on March 1st and so you know I think that
there's a scenario to remove any uncertainty perhaps where Edmonton finds
another home for him if that doesn't happen then it it really gets interesting in terms of what moves do others make or don't make, you
know, how they they navigate this because you know obviously they're
they're looking to spend right to the cap and we'll need to have some some
certainty that Kane isn't coming back because frankly you can't activate a
player and be over the cap and and there's only so many mechanisms to get
rid of guys between now and the end of the season so
uh... this is this is the the script here still be written
uh... i don't know who wins that the tug-of-war where this all lands but it's
certainly uh...
one to get your popcorn out for between now and and friday's deadline to see
how the oilers manage it and and did they just end up trading him to remove
any
any concern about that
so the gist is cj if he comes back they got a lot unloaded guy or is it just
that they comes back they can't add anything at the deadline
well it's both i mean if he comes back they need to have room data salary
on on their
there's their books right now and you know i think the salaries the five
million five points five something out
it's it's not you. It's not nothing.
And so as a team, you need to know what that looks like
before you even make another trade potentially
or trades this week.
So I think it's right now just in kind of a gray area
where it might be in Edmonton's best interest
to see if there's someone else out there
that would take his contract.
And so I think that's where it is today is that the oilers are
looking at the market and obviously if they can move them then it's no longer
a concern for them if they can't move them then you know it's gonna have a
lot of nice location than what they can do by Friday 3 p.m. well this is the
conundrum on both fronts one when he's healthy and playing he's a really good
player and if you're the oilers you you need the help. Like they need, they need some help. They won over the weekend,
but they've hit a bit of a rut here. You know, some of the depth pieces they have, they acquired
over the off season just have not worked. They could use him, but it's pretty clear
they could use him game one of the playoffs, wink, wink, nudge, nudge. And I'm certain the fan
base will probably turn on him if Kane's like, I'm not doing that. I got to play. And as
a result, it's going to possibly screw up the cap structure or who else they could acquire.
Like, and I don't know, I don't know where I would side on this because like he has the
right to play. He has a contract and he's a professional player
and he's a veteran and he's worked hard to read out.
And the cap mess is never the player's responsibility.
No and that's exactly, he's like, yeah I'm signed,
I'm a professional and I've worked hard to get back
and I wanna play but you know in Edmonton, CJ
and the fans would be thinking, take one for the team
Evander and play game one.
Like don't force yourself back to play 10
meaningless games. Like I would think from a PR standpoint he would have to
think this through a little bit more. Well do you want to know another element
of it is is look the reason they want that cap space is they might want to
replace him in the lineup. They might want to trade for another forward who
could play ahead of him or play his role. I mean, there's all kinds of strings we can
pull on here and then on top of that, honestly, what the Oilers need is someone like Kane. Like,
I've talked to some people around that team, like there's a feel that they don't have enough pushback
that, you know, they've obviously come out of the break here not playing too well after the
four nations and, you know, they need someone with some bite. And so, you're right, in a perfect
role, they would just have him ready to roll out in the playoffs and get him back down but I'm not sure
they're gonna get that option yeah in terms of Vancouver in this Brock Bester
scenario how do you see this plan out I still think he's gonna be a tough guy
for them to move you know obviously they're nowhere on an extension they've
had months and months and months and there have been talks over those months at
various points about extending him.
What about the rumblings of him being offered 8 million per year for five years?
Is that incorrect?
I think it's approximately correct.
I don't know if it's exactly 8 times 5, but from what I've heard it's something in that
range.
That's within an acceptable range where it's about what was on the table,
but it sounds like that isn't even on the table anymore.
So, in the next four or five days here,
I don't know where this goes,
but to me, you're looking at a guy
who's a solid citizen with the team,
he's the longest-tenured player there,
and they're trying to get in the playoffs.
I know he hasn't had as productive of a season
as he and they would like,
but it's hard to imagine that they're trying to get in the playoffs. I know he hasn't had as productive of a season as he and they would like, but it's hard to
imagine that they're trading him away and still saying that they want to make the playoffs.
So the truth is this might just end up going to the offseason and we see where it lands,
but it doesn't sound like they're anywhere near an extension right now.
And they're kind of hit this, they're at this sort of a staring contest,
I guess, in terms of what moves next, but it doesn't seem like they're moving anywhere
towards getting a deal done.
I love Besser, but if 8 million is pushed in front of him, I don't know what the hell
else he'd be looking for.
I mean, I don't...
He wants more term.
I mean, it's the five years that was the issue at that time, not the 8 million.
He wants more term?
That's what he's looking for, is a long-term deal?
Yeah.
That's a dangerous game, man.
That's a dangerous game.
He doesn't exactly, he's had some good seasons, but you look at his skating and that's what
they're probably projecting.
I don't know, I think he's crazy not accepting that deal.
Crazy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, it would scare me again if I was a team thinking this guy's demand like
he's he has the right to ask for more term.
But why why are you scared to play out the five years and see where your career is going?
That might be a part of it too.
All right, CJ.
Well, we'll leave it there.
It's gonna be a fun week.
We'll catch you on Friday.
Yep.
Enjoy it boys.
We'll see you there.
There's Chris Johnston joining us here on the Maple Toyota hotline.
How old is Brock Besser? 28? 28. I'm looking at his numbers. Enjoy it boys. We'll see you there. There's a Chris Johnston joining us here in the Maple Toyota hotline
How old's Brock Besser? 28. I'm looking at his numbers. They're not as like Jeff's right like it's so he's a 25 30 goals
He's actually like 60 point guy 29 26 16 23 23 18 40
And then 18 this year. Yeah, that's eight million a year seems that's crazy I like he's if he thinks someone's offering him something more than that
Yeah, I mean people do stupid stuff in the summertime, but I can't I can't see them going anything beyond that man
Eight million a year. I don't see it either. I
What's happened here is?
He like players and agents are looking at the cap going up so much and
they're freaking out and they're saying, well, there's so much more money looking in three
years it's going to be a hundred and I think teams rightfully are pushing back and saying,
good for you for seeing that and hearing that it's not going to apply to you.
That's right.
And that can happen at Brock Besser where he could have a three year deal offer to him
in the summertime and it's like, we don't care what you thought you were gonna get
that's what we're off there's been countless examples of that I'm not
saying it's definitely gonna happen to him or you hear a guy turns down you
know Dave Bowlin types and the old Denny Cody Franzen and yeah where the
sure exactly that crazy contract he's like no I'm good and then I think you
know one year one year contract with the Celtics or something and he's bounced
around ever since. Absolutely.
Where again, you like you get hurt down the stretch or something happens.
It's like you turned out 40 million guaranteed to stay where you're loved
and everyone knows you and John Klingberg is a prime example.
Yeah, good one.
Wasn't it like Dallas seven or something?
Yeah, it was like seven times seven or seven times seven point eight.
And he wanted more. I don't know who the hell was directing traffic there, the player or the agent, but he left that
and yeah he signed a one-year deal. Yeah, for four mil. Five million in Anaheim and then he was
Five million in Anaheim and then he was
Loose hips and he was PTO in Toronto and PTO in Edmonton
Yeah, I think he got like seven million Anaheim that first year and then I didn't it was five
Okay, it was one year five million dollar deal in Anaheim and then one year for that a half or whatever
But yeah, Cody Franzen was another classic example. You don't think though?
He gave him a five-year offer. He turned it down, went to Buffalo or something for two
years at like two million.
Yeah, there is another one.
That one stings, man.
He had like a four or five-year deal at like four million.
Strike while the iron's hot. And teams will get vindictive and owners will get vindictive.
That doesn't come up enough. Like when you hear stories of that's been taken off the
table, there's a 50% chance
That's the owner saying oh really he turned that down don't ever from anything again exactly exactly
It only goes down from that offer
Yeah, like owners get their their nose out of shape man like they get in there and they're like turn down
What that owner out in Vancouver? Oh like yeah, he's gonna run a bit hot I think
different character yeah well we'll see like Vancouver it wasn't a good night
for them on Saturday but they're still I believe in the playoffs right now they're
just out Calgary Calgary's up on them now I do wonder though we talk about
being a bug on the wall in some boardrooms I would love to hear the
Pederson discussion in that boardroom and his name comes up
like what the organization says
projects and how they want to proceed
that would be a fascinating combo to put a glass to the wall and say what are you
guys talking about
yeah that's what we come back and get into that because i have a few different
options all they own
few different senior segment what are you guys talking about? Is it this or is it that?
Okay, we'll come back and play. What are you guys talking about?
Because I got a few different examples in a few different sports. All right, we'll get to that James Myrtle coming up
We got Ryan Dempster on the show in an hour best best still to come as well
Overdrive continues TSN 1050 and on the TSN app. You guys want to hear
some nightmare fuel
Yeah, what do you have?
My wife on the weekend
Went to this little cat exhibit thing get some toys for the cats with a girlfriend
Big thing like exhibition like it was
it was a cat expo.
She returns home and says
there's like a best in show for house cats
and I'd like to put Fred in next year
but I'm not comfortable around people I'd like you
to be the one to show them."
And she grabs like an imaginary cat and she goes, there's only like a couple of poses
you have to do. One is holding it up and then one is to the side. And I'm my blood is boiling thinking of you and noodles in the
stands while I'm showing off the cat well I can give you one guarantee that
if you're in that thing I will be there like it is a hundred percent guarantee I
don't care what is happening in my life What is happening in the world if you are parading a cat around your daughter's got a playoff hockey game
And I'm in the best in show you're coming. I'll be there. She'll understand it. She'll get it and as she ages
She'll go I appreciate that you went to see that and did that because the content I need to see you doing this because
The like I've never heard of
this with cats too right like I've heard it with dogs and there's different breeds of
dog what the hell is a cat gonna do that's gonna like be at all impressive well that's
my cat do that impresses me because my wife was explaining that the cats were so calm
and they're just kind of staring into note my cat would run so fast and so far i'd never find him again
so
there's some hurdles here
so the way she was training fred
like you would have to be true because this is where i do is not trained for this but
that's what i'm saying i don't but it's a house i don't think the other ones are too
house cat best in show
and she's like our cat fred is good-looking. I think he'd win it
I'm uncomfortable in front of people. I like you to show him
Like she's some kind of breeder or something. Yeah, I almost passed out
So do you have the info on what this is doogie?
Like this is something that happens annually in Toronto to a science you can find out what O's talking about here.
Because I've never heard of this.
Like, Jonas, I know dog people that they can't wait
to get their dog out, right?
They can't wait for everyone else to enjoy their dog.
And I get it, if you're a dog person,
I guess there's something to it that you find compelling.
I personally, it's not my thing.
I don't really care who wins best in show.
Yeah, I don't care that what your breed is and what they do and the fact that they can walk around
and you know. I could care less about any of it. Yeah, they fit properly and it's completely
irrelevant to me. I couldn't think of something I care about less. Unless it's a cat. Like
the only thing I could think of that would be even more ridiculous is cats doing this.
Because, correct me if I'm wrong. Like are there different breeds of cats?
Yes, yes. Mine are Siberian. Mine are Siberian.
Well I know there's like tigers and stuff like that but I'm talking like how many different
breeds that would fill up different categories.
A zillion. A zillion. My cats are Siberian forest cats. Okay? Siberian forest cats. There is Okay, I beer he forest cats
There is tons of breeds and there's there's a name. Give me give me a handful of breeds. Give me some I don't know cat
Bangle cat you're a cat guy. John. No, I have no idea but how do you know that because it's common sense
How was it common sense a billion different species of everything?
Well, I get it that that you know, there's one there's there's jaguars and there's a huge there's a size of leopards my buddy Tommy France has
two of them they go to the bathroom in the toilet there that's what I'm saying
I'm talking house cats like Jinx yeah like Jinx and that's what I'm picturing
him as Robert De Niro yeah like being Like being, and there is that movie, Best in Show,
have you seen that comedy?
It's a brilliant, brilliant comedy.
Now that's featuring dogs.
I think TSA should televise this.
That's what I'm saying though.
I get it with the dog show.
What is it, Westminster Dog Show?
Right, that one's a big one,
and there's the bigger dogs,
and the smaller dogs, and the different breeds.
I've never heard of this with cats.
There's O-Dog next year at the Best in Show.
Where, like, where is that though?
That looks like it's in a barn somewhere. Like there's no audience for this. Is it called the cat
expedite like expo? What is it called? Do you have any knowledge? You have an update Doogie. What are we talking about?
I do. Okay go ahead. Toronto cat Stravaganza. Meet your local rescues and charities. There's international judges.
Take a front seat at the International Cat Competition at the exhibition place.
Okay, so that's down at the X. This is real.
The cat's stravaganza. I'm gonna win the cat's stravaganza Stanley Cup.
Oh, so it was this past weekend?
Yeah.
Okay, so that's where your wife was. She was down at the X.
Okay, so we have a year to get this guy prepared. We have one year to do it. Okay
Okay, you gotta take find out more details do get on how they judge cats
Like with dogs, I understood it. It was you know, they had to run through hoops and stuff like that
You got to sit properly. You got to be groomed properly
Okay, you got to behave that's first and foremost
But I also think, like, doesn't
the owner have to have, like, some sort of connection with the dog? Like, don't they
have to dress in a certain way?
So they evaluate cats based on physical features, overall condition, and personality traits.
What the hell personality does a cat have? I thought that's the whole thing about cats.
Head shape, tail length, here's a hot hot hot
okay dude fred can win
but i got a trip i got it me and fred have to just practice
and we are going to win this thing in a year day
do you what kind of
what does he have to do like let's put all on the floor with fred what kind of
like judging are they going through now what kind of the what are the poses? Yeah, what does he have to do with Fred? It's just just the look of the cat essentially based on there you go
Look at the condition like is the owner holding the cat? Yes
Yeah, okay, that's a little bit different because the dog show they're actually like walking and running and doing stuff, right?
They're not on a leash and that's the whole point that they listen to instruction.
Like is this basically an understanding
that cats are incapable of doing that doogie?
Like they're just gonna say,
screw it we're not doing this so you can't have
that kind of feature in an event like this?
Essentially it says based on their temperament
of how they react.
I need you in this guy's shirt.
If you're watching on TV, this guy,
whoever we're watching right now.
That guy looks like a magician.
Why does he need that green shirt?
That shirt was so outrageous that he had the Mr. Perfect hair going as well.
He was stealing the show at the Cat's Trabaganza.
That guy had other plans to take over.
Dude, if I went to Cat's Trabag ganza and knuckle up with that guy on a pick
Dude, that is a victory. Yeah, I I picture us doing the show down there next week next year
Like we'll get it going both days Saturday Sunday. We're both on we're on the the concourse floor, dude
I'll do it. I'll do a Saturday.'ll do a saturday show from the cats are again so i had
hours student hours like i i will i will marathon
down at the cat strawberry at man get the ice cream truck down there will pull
it right into the building and just fire up an overdrive weekend edition
absolutely
so now i'm getting cat people that are jumping on me
are do you do i was don't burn your car down.
Yeah, I've got someone writing in cat breeds on the fly.
Tabby, a Siamese, a Persian, a Bengal, a ragdoll.
That's not true.
I feel like I'm getting duped here.
Yeah, ragdoll.
Is that true?
Yeah, it's a cat, man.
You don't know that.
Dude, I swear on my life.
Just like John Klingberg signed for 5 million, I know that there's a ragdoll cat.
Because people ask me if my cats are ragdolls.
So within the cat community, people are picking off different breeds?
I don't know why I've never experienced this.
What do you mean?
Well, because with dogs, I get it.
That's a big part of the icebreaker with dog people.
If I don't go in the competition next year, I'll meet with dogs. That's a big part of the icebreaker with dog people. Hey, what kind of breed is that?
Dude, if I don't go to the competition next year,
I'll meet you and your kids down there
and we'll all go to the cat expo
and see if they like it.
Okay, yeah, listen, I don't want,
this is why that would be dangerous.
That doesn't sound like a fun afternoon.
Sounds horrible because what's gonna happen
is my kids are gonna say, well, we wanna get a cat.
I have no interest in getting a cat.
So I don't really wanna do that.
Are you gonna be okay with getting recognized
down there like
do you have a couple of the only one or a red
now they have no idea who hockey like that that they are focused on cats and
they got needed shirts with their cat on it
uh... it's a lifestyle that is a five but it is there's no i'm saying no like in
terms of like when you when you meet somebody when the dogs not around hey you got a dog yeah I got a dog the first thing is
what kind of dog do you have do cat people I've never understood I've never
heard someone say or ask hey what kind of cat do you have absolutely okay cat
people would say that cat people would say that I guess but I feel like even
non-dog people like I would be interested what kind of dog do you have I
got a Rottweiler I got a poodle I got I would never ask I don't interested what kind of dog do you have I got a rottweiler. I got a poodle I got I would never ask
I don't know what Fred is Fred's been in this guy's life long time. I have I don't care. I don't really care what Fred is
Fred's a cat that's where it ends for me. What's Fred's personality like
He's very shy like he just he keeps to himself. I just don't know if he'd be ready for this type of thing
He has a carrier and if I brought him out of the carrier I honestly think he'd scratch my
eyes out you scratched potentially someone else's the guy in the green
shirts eyes would be lying on the floor and we'd have a massive problem okay I
need that to happen more than anything Fred to ruin the whole event yeah and
then you get breaking news from people that would not know who always
Right, they'd spell his name wrong and they'd say there was this guy named Jeff and someone said he was a baseball player or something
The guy in the green shirt with the mullet
Yeah, all right, yeah a lot of people are really eyes for winning the catcher again there is a couple of those a car you have to do what you have so there's an ultimate
prize for the best kitten
best cat
best alter and a best household pat
cable what's on the line with what it what's uh... what kind of stuff can all
win here
new exit money i'd be going to pass household pet categories of what is up
for grabs judging rings
for each breed but what is on the line or Judging rings for each breed?
But what is on the line though, Doogie?
Like is it medals?
Is it a gift card to pet value?
Dude, if it's anything less than 10 grand cash, I'm not going to the competition.
That's what I'm saying.
Well, can you win cash out of this?
And you know, if it's down at the X, where there are a lot of people...
I am so fascinated by this whole cat stravaganza.
Dude, we're going to do a show.
We're going to get the ice cream truck in there next year the catstravagans and we're
doing a weekend Sunday edition of overdrive I can't wait for this
ribbons I need all getting a ribbon place on his alumni jacket and
certifications as well what is that what he certified for the top twenty five cats in the world with most points in our region also
there's a whole point is that you can go international like okutek for a
little right now world right
yeah
i need you to move up the rank yes you and fred you get me into a top ten
world rank in a cat showing
i'm like that
imagine on all dog i went from down number ten in the cat showing I'm like imagine I'm Oh dog I'm a number 10 in
the world that's showing my cat you know it's gonna happen if that happens if it
goes international your wife will your wife will boot you and yeah you'll be
as soon as I vaulted into top 10 she'll be like I think I can do it I'll take it
from here where we going next Paris yeah that'll be mine I look forward to you
calling and saying yeah I can't do the playoffs i'm going to prog to do
right stram again and you really need to have a lot of the five i move up the
chain on i'm a top five guys takes over from work man i'll go to prog i would
support you
i would support you and say don't bother him
he's got
a big event coming up yes private private jet and Fred in the carrier
Leash finally make it to the cup final and this guy is in like Brazil with his cat. I need that to happen
Don't bother him. It's a big week for Fred. All right that that
Circle it in your calendars doogie and
Contact someone from that event say we
will be there next year reaching out already yeah get everyone involved here
at TSN no excuses we will be there yeah we'll be there all right James Myrtle
coming up in 15 Myrtle seems like he'd be a cat guy does he have a cat is not
but he doesn't have a cat Does he have a dog or anything?
No. They have like...
You got young kids?
Ampsters or something?
Oh.
Fish?
Fish. That's what I'm pushing toward. My youngest daughter asks almost every day,
can I get a fish? Can I get a fish?
You know what the secret about that though? It's not easy.
It's a lot of cleaning.
Like the... Yeah, exactly.
I don't think you'll like it.
No, I have no interest in any of that.
We just keep pushing it off. And we're gonna continue to get a little
goldfish in like a little jar I know but then that's depressing because they they
don't live that long yeah and then you got to have the Chad as to why you know
the goldfish isn't around my friend is gone why Fred the goldfish isn't here
anymore all right Murdo coming up Ryan Dempster will join us as well overdrive continues
TSN 1050 and on TSN for all right
We sent out his brother out into the city with another pair of leaf tickets
You have to guess where he's hiding for your chance to win them you guys ready for the first clue of the week hit me
Hey overdrive fans, it's Monday
Which means we got a new set of leaf tickets to hand your way
It's Leafs and sends the Battle of Ontario set for March 15th.
You got to find out where is Al's brother hiding at this week.
Here is your Monday clue.
I'll be heading west of the downtown core, roughly 15 kilometers or so from Scotia Bank Arena.
OK, that's it.
That ended very abruptly, but OK Tune in tomorrow for another clue. The first caller through on Friday with the
correct location wins a pair of tickets again to see Leafs-Sends. Fine House
Brothers brought to you by McAlpine Ford in Aurora. Our family, the Ford family,
and you. I don't know where our brother would be. 15 minutes. Scarborough Bluffs he said west of the city didn't he didn't you say 15 kilometers west of the city yeah
sure way gardens maybe maybe here since I'm in Northwest could be that's
probably where he is could be at the least practice rank a little further
yeah maybe maybe Toronto Golf Club down there could be down there right?
I know something something west of the city
We got to get into the golf scene over the weekend with you need one of those hats that
High Smith is wearing on tour
He picked up a big win yesterday
We got the Arnie Palmer this week and on the players next week and people are wondering if tiger is gonna play
At the players or not. I don't think think he does man I'm not sure he does either
I think he's scared to death to tee it up right now that's my honest opinion I
think he's afraid of what happens out there with those guys in the course and
what he does yeah last year it was ugly for him like it actually really got ugly
on the course where to the point where I think he was kind of
Embarrassed he was obviously missing cuts and we saw what happened to Masters he finished dead last and on the Sunday
It was really all help. He never plays and he's almost 50 years old. Yeah, it's not it's not a good scene
Yeah, I think you're onto something there
All right, James Myrtle Ryan Damster and our best buds still. Overdrive continues. TSN 1050N on the TSN app.
