Final Hour Overdrive continues powered by Fandual bringing you everything from the opening line of the final score, Brian Hayes, Jonas Siegel of the Athletic, Jamie Noodles, McClennan. If Fandual was going to place a line on me going Pete Rose and falling asleep during the show it would have been like minus 250 today.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Right. You didn't sleep well last night 250 today. Classic parent night last night so it's my wife's birthday today happy birthday. Oh nice happy birthday. Happy birthday. Is it a big one? No it's not everyone's a big one. Every single year is a big one. So made the rookie mistake was watching the Carolina Washington game but put me to sleep, fell asleep, woke up and then I'm up. You're like, watch the whole Edmonton game. Watching the Warriors game, you know, late night last night up until I don't even know what time. Fall asleep, my youngest wakes up in the middle of the night. Yeah. Nine times out of ten until I don't even know what time fall asleep my youngest wakes up in the middle of the night yeah nine times out of ten I don't even wouldn't even hear it yeah and nine times out of ten my foot go in there
Starting point is 00:01:53 yeah but it's you know birthday the next day I get the tap you go figure it out I go in there there's a settler down guys in. Yeah, something's going on. I fall asleep. I wake up. Now, Noodles, you will know this because you're a parent. You've been through this. When you wake up in the middle of the night, Jonas, I don't know if I've been asleep for five minutes or five hours. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:17 You're like, I don't know what time it is. It's so dark in here. Maybe I've been asleep for five minutes. Maybe it's been five hours. I make the judgment call in the moment. Screw it. I'm staying in here. Maybe I've been asleep for five minutes. Maybe it's been five hours. I make the judgment call in the moment. Screw it. I'm staying in here. Yeah, I'm not getting up and going back. No, no, but she's a like right in your wheelhouse sleeper and away and it's the beds not great brutal sleep, brutal sleep. And I've been fighting it all day. And here I
Starting point is 00:02:42 am. And I'm trying to avoid going Pete Rose in the final hour, which. It happens though, because my son is seven, I'll jump in with him and I'm like, because I'm a late guy, Yeah. Like, so Steph, if she goes to bed at 10 o'clock or passes out at 10 o'clock, I'm watching games. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:58 And the TV's too big and bright in the room, she'll be like, get the hell out of here. So now I'm downstairs, but Gwinnie will fall asleep and then he comes bombing out he gets scared or something so I'm I don't know how many times I'm on my computer watching it in his bed right and I just fall asleep and then I can hear him in the morning going Alexa what time is 538 and I'm like go to bed like yeah, cuz this Alexa will whisper back to him Oh, yeah, I didn't know they're kind of creepy these so they're incredibly creepy as they're listening to you the whole time They know there's a conspiracy. That's a good conspiracy
Starting point is 00:03:34 They know what's going on all the time, but I can hear him go Alexa. What time? Go to sleep like wake your dad just you're out and you yeah You know if they're a furnace, if they're not, like there's just so many things. No idea man. I'm, it's, at my house it's musical beds. Like you just try and sleep. That's all you, if you can get, like I only sleep
Starting point is 00:03:57 six hours a night anyways, regardless. That's not enough. It's fine, what else am I gonna do? Yeah, you're fine, you're okay. I usually go to bed at like 12.30, one o'clock and I'm up at 6 37 in that range. Hmm, like that's it That's reasonable. I think I think that's ours is yeah Well people take anything for that last night. Yeah six hours like you're I think in a perfect world You're a ten-hour. I would take a ten-hour shutdown in a heartbeat
Starting point is 00:04:20 I could but no you're sleeping for ten. I wish could sleep. I've never slept 10 hours straight in my, I don't think ever in my life. I can't anymore now. Like with kids and everything, you got the internal clock. Even if I was blind drunk, I will still wake up somehow six, seven hours, four hours to get some water or. Yeah, and then when you're up,
Starting point is 00:04:40 you're like, I can't get back to sleep. That's a grind. No, that's, I can't. I like that conspiracy though What have you ever been talking to someone and then like you look your phone or something? Oh, yeah Like well the algorithms are out there like it's on the IP like if someone's look like that I'm convinced It's a hundred percent. We're gonna get a new couch and then all exactly. How about that mattress and all of a sudden?
Starting point is 00:05:00 You're just like talking to someone you're like, maybe you should get a couch Yeah, and then there's like a couch on you. Absolutely. All the time. It's not a coincidence. That is that that's might be a proven fact. Not even a good beer. So yeah, that's that's Tim Cook knows what he's doing and Zuckerberg all these guys.
Starting point is 00:05:16 It is but there are so many crazy conspiracy. That's the problem is when one becomes true, you start you do are any true though I don't know there's definitely some things that are true like you're not yeah we don't need to get crazy you're just gonna agree with everything the history books of Everest come on Jonah's got to be something that's happened we're like yeah that actually but that one the Alexa listening in on you oh yeah a hundred percent like I don't know again what they're allowed to what they're We're like, yeah, that actually did that one. The Alexa listening in on you? Oh, yeah. 100%. Like, I don't know, again, what they're allowed to, what they're not, but...
Starting point is 00:05:49 Something's going on. Well, I read something today, actually. Swear to God, I read it. There was a $95 million judgment against Apple. Yes, Siri, I think it was. Siri? Yeah. Because Siri, because you go, hey, Siri, you know, get me, look at my Siri's firing up
Starting point is 00:06:02 right now. She's like... Everybody. Right. But it's like, get me, the year 2014 you're they were listening in on your devices if you had a device in 2014 you can apply for every class action it's a class action every device is worth 20 bucks yeah up to a hundred dollars you can get that's the best part of it like who is taking the time there are lunatics I mean like I know but it's like who like cuz we've all been in those situations where it's like if you have something it's a class-action suit right all you have to do is read this
Starting point is 00:06:32 96 page and sign 45,000 initials and you get 28 bucks yeah and people are like yeah perfect let me let me do that I got I got I have a weekend in front of me where I'm willing to do that. Like, who's doing that? Who is actually taking advantage of these class actions? Unless it's a principled thing, where you're like, I am just, it doesn't matter how much time, how much whatever, if you feel like you got jobbed or ripped off
Starting point is 00:06:56 from somebody, you're like, I will wait till the end of time to make sure you pay for it. Yes, that's Pat Quinn at San Marquita. That's Pat Quinn, 13 years later. 13 years later, I got to get them. Best Buds coming up later in the hour, the Jays are back home in the red hot. And every once in a while, we show up at the studio here and there are significant items waiting for us right like we're lucky enough, we get some swag every once in a
Starting point is 00:07:21 while. Sometimes our friends at Boston pizza will drop off a feed bag. Yeah, today we got access to a new book that is going to be hitting stores I believe in early June, right Dougie? Yeah. And of course we know the author. It's one of our favorites and in fact there's a little excerpt from the Overdrive crew right behind it. I think we're on the book. I love it. The book is called The Franchise and it's about the Blue Jays, a curated history of the Jays and it's written by our next guest. Here is our main man from MLB.com, Keegan Matheson.
Starting point is 00:07:51 What's up, Keegan? That's what the people need to know. You guys are patrons of the arts. Yes. Men of literature involved in this book. I love it, guys. I love it. I love it too.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Let me read it quickly. The excerpt on the back, alright? Keegan is the voice of baseball with us on the national flagship sports program, Overdrive. That sounds like something we would say. His knowledge and insight, combined with his incredible sense of humor, makes him a true bearded baseball authority, which is all featured in the franchise, whether it to be his view on who's playing well a player getting traded or what's good to eat on the road keegan has it all that is something we would say a hundred percent agree with that we need to start more radio appearances like this just a
Starting point is 00:08:34 prepared statement that complimented me i would really prefer that the other i love it to the only thing i can't think about is like is it on audio book yet because we need to a lot of people like, I don't know, are you a book writer? I read books, yeah. I'm an audio guy. Like I like books. Does someone read, like, you know? Yeah, they read his book and you can buy it on iBooks and you listen to it.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Oh, that's brilliant. That's what I do. Like I, I'll be driving, if you have a long drive or something like that, you listen to a book. Do they have emotion in the book? Like does the book read like monotone? Well if Keegan gets fired up about something maybe the Vlad is signing yes it'll have it's not going to be monotone and they gave him 500 million. And then Ceto Gasson. What do you make of that
Starting point is 00:09:18 Keegan you got any plans for getting in the booth or what? You know what guys not yet but I'm getting that a lot than i've already told give you who wrote the forward that if this goes to audio book he's hired but i don't have that budget but i need i need to be reading all wondered some pages that uh... you know what that that lead the feedback i get most and it's the most meaningful when people say you know what i'm not a book guy but i guess i'll pick it up and you know what there we go it's it's much like my stories each
Starting point is 00:09:48 night guys if you actually read it no problem but as long as you buy it or click on it we're happy exactly no it's beautiful man it's a it's a beautiful looking book I sound like Trump it's a beautiful book yeah it's the most beautiful book some people are saying the most beautiful book the greatest book ever maybe the greatest book of all time but there it is uh... about keegan it's good i'm sure it's good to be home and on the road in now we were talking about
Starting point is 00:10:12 they lost the first two games in our emotions that we've had in the last week with this team crazy like i came on here after they lost those first two games in hoffman's blowing games and looks brutal and i'm like this this time can't do this again and all of a sudden they've won four in a row their bats have absolutely exploded what in your opinion what happened what happened between game two and three in Anaheim and then were carried over to Seattle I think a lot of it guys has to do with me showing up in Seattle I think it really heightened the mood around the organization. But man,
Starting point is 00:10:46 this is a team that has not had much of a middle ground yet. And the example of a middle ground guys would be kind of a bad or average game, but Vladdy hits a home run and they win. We have not seen those types of games where an individual performance decides the game, or where Kevin Gosman just shuts the team out. We haven't seen that. This is a team that either needs to click as a nine-man lineup or not. And that's going to lead to some good days and some really, really bad days. Those losses against the Angels were terrible. There's no way around that. And this is not a team that can afford to
Starting point is 00:11:25 have bullpen losses. They really cannot. And when the back end falter, that's as ugly as it's going to look. But then, suddenly they get to Seattle and the lineups working together. We saw it in that last game Sunday. That win that they have been praying for, a big 9-1 win. The power guys are hitting for a bit of power. The bottom of the lineup is being a bit more scrappy, moving runners, the running, pushing the envelope on the bases aggressively. It all came together like it was supposed to and when that happens it looks really good. It's amazing guys how you can go three days from, wow this team might be going in the tank to okay maybe this
Starting point is 00:12:05 team is back on track maybe they are that wild card team but a complete 180 amazing to watch it live and they've got a little sense of momentum now in an American League that's kind of messy this is a year where you do not need to win a hundred baseball games to make playoffs. Keegan what is going on with George Springer this year? This is amazing guys and I will not need to win a hundred baseball games to make playoffs. Keegan, what is going on with George Springer this year? This is amazing, guys, and I will not pretend to have seen this coming whatsoever. Like, I am so impressed
Starting point is 00:12:33 by George Springer because this is a different person than we saw last year. And beyond the baseball guys, like, it just looks like he's having fun again. He is re-energized out there, and George Springer is an energetic guy he's always going at a thousand miles an hour and when you're struggling having all that energy probably goes in a pretty negative direction but we are seeing right now the player that the Blue Jays signed for 150 million bucks a guy that is leading a team frankly right now And I did not see that
Starting point is 00:13:06 coming at all. I really didn't. And not only is he hitting for power, I mean, he's showing life on the bases at 35 that we haven't seen from him in a couple of years. It's really impressive. And to have that in the middle of the lineup has changed this team completely. And it's surprising to say to the guys guys even as I'm saying it But if George Springer was down with a 650 or 700 OPS right now that wouldn't surprise anyone after last year But we would be talking about a blue Jays team that's a couple wins shy of where they are right now and that's not a good thing like he is dragging them and Until Flattie gets hot until Bo gets hot which needs to happen
Starting point is 00:13:43 And until Vladdy gets hot, until Bo gets hot, which needs to happen, Springer is keeping this lineup alive at 35. Like it is so impressive what he's doing and he's doing it with some life. You know, it's watchable. It's fun to watch him play baseball right now. Yeah, it's pretty incredible. I mean, he's, George has hit five home runs this year.
Starting point is 00:13:59 He's batting just under 300. He's got an OPS of 921. And now, you know, he's got an OPS of 921 and and now you know he's he's gonna move around the outfield at times but now that Varsho's in center and playing every day I think that's pretty significant too right Keegan like the the the arrival of Varsho puts a lot of pieces in place. Absolutely does and when you have that solidified
Starting point is 00:14:26 it let john shiner sit down every day and look at the lineup and try to score rups that's a big shift that they've made this year and adding on the men as a kind of simplified that second base position to a healthy but last year there was a lot of thought put into the best defensive format they could put out there and sometimes defense came before often when they were making a lineup that shifted that's been a complete flip now John Schneider and the coaching staff they sit down and they try to
Starting point is 00:14:53 score runs with their lineup because you're naturally going to have a good defense with these players on this roster but they're chasing a bit more offense now and if you have a Varsha in there every day that locks in a moving piece you don't need to worry about covering that with Nathan Lucas, Miles Straw, you can chase matchups in other places. George Springer is a big part of that Anthony Santander he's gonna be a big part of that you're gonna DH him sometimes probably and then Addison Barger man he has come out of nowhere and is doing something with all of those crazy tools he has
Starting point is 00:15:27 it's uh... it's been impressive to watch having barter in the middle there simplified that that lets you chase off it with keegan matheson so this when a very very positive discussion uh... let's throw mac sure is your mother and i think i can't let's let's get a little crazy what's what's the latest with Scherzer? And, I mean, give us the straight goods here. What's going on with this guy? So, Max Scherzer threw live BP, which means he's facing his own hitters, in Anaheim last week.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Coming out of that, his thumb felt okay, but his back did not. He felt some mid-back tightness, they are calling it so that's going to get in the way of his schedule he was supposed to throw again either sunday in seattle or today here in toronto uh that hasn't happened so this does not seem like a terribly serious thing but ramping up as a pitcher is delicate guys if you get the rail from that then you have to go back a step in for a little pan again instead of facing live hitters and this mac sure they're paying all along guys
Starting point is 00:16:33 whenever i hear a timeline i don't really care about until we really see him up to fifty sixty seventy pitches because throughout spring training and throughout the early parts of this year sure there continues to say i don't really know how this gonna react until Because throughout spring training and throughout the early parts of this year, Scherzer continues to say, I don't really know how this is going to react until I'm past 50 pitches and it's bouncing back.
Starting point is 00:16:51 So how it feels after 30 or 40 pitches facing his own guys, yeah, it's good that he's not in pain, but I don't think that matters quite yet. I really don't. And this is one where the Blue Jays kind of need some patience to see how it goes but this is not a time for patience when they are trying to patch together their number five rotation spot. One of their top pitching prospects Jake Bloss we just found out today he's undergoing elbow surgery he's gone for a year at least so they need someone in that spot and it's not going to be sure
Starting point is 00:17:22 is there next week probably not two weeks from now. At best you're still looking a few weeks down the road which means three four or five more starts you need to cover in that spot but as we have seen it's not simple it's not straight with this injury and the more complicated things get isn't usually not a good thing. What do you make of the Pete Rose news today? Surprising guys and I am really interested to see how what percentage he gets in his first year on the ballot, the Hall of Fame ballot. It's going to be a big point of conversation around that and it's going to stretch outside of baseball as well, I guarantee you that. So that news coming today, I didn't know it was coming. We kind of saw that we were down on the clubhouse But that is going to be another big conversation like we've had with steroid users over the years
Starting point is 00:18:11 You know blast decade or so as they hit the ballot But we were just talking about that up here where I think his percentage will be you need 75% To make the Hall of Fame of BBWA votes I don't think that's happening right out of the gates but is he a guy that gets 40, 50, 60 right out of the gates? I'm not sure. It's gonna be a fascinating one and my god it's gonna be a top-notch point. Oh it most certainly will be. Well we'll take it from here. Jay's raised tonight and thanks for sending the books in Keegan. We can't wait until they're all
Starting point is 00:18:42 available online in stores noodles to be waiting on a voice out the audio book and uh... or often run and thank you buddy appreciate doing this you've got it felt about the start reading a chapter per radio appearance yes i'm a perfect story by keegan i love it areas keegan matheson m l b dot com and again uh... rob man for the commissioner of baseball's reinst reinstated Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson, and 15 other players that were on the ineligible list.
Starting point is 00:19:10 And Rose was saying at the end of his life, like, you know, I don't, if you're not gonna allow me to go in while I'm alive, I don't wanna go in when I've passed away, and he just recently passed away. I can't imagine the timing is a coincidence. No. But I think what Keegan just mentioned
Starting point is 00:19:27 is a very intriguing angle that I hadn't thought of this. Like, how does this work with the steroid users? Well, I was just going to say, Roger Clemens is leading. Florida's third line has been very, very good. OK, there you go. That's an interesting point, too. I don't know why I decided to throw that out there, but I felt I had to throw that out there, but I felt I had to throw that out there
Starting point is 00:19:50 But I wanted to make that point again quickly Florida, please continue Roger Clemens like what he's a Hall of Famer Is he not so one undone? Actually man, he's but what I'm saying. No, I guess the way Barnes not in the hall. No, no, he's not talking literally He's talking about the way he played if he didn't do the sauce Yes, would he be in the Hall of Fame? Yes, of course first by unanimous it bonds is arguably the greatest player of all time His face is like he's a cheater. Yeah. Well that I that is a separate conversation Separate it right. I understand that but if they're they're separating, you know gambling is is Different right but they're separating now with Rose and Jackson guys won't have a chance then or you think that well I wonder if this is a new era of them being like, you know what by guns be by guns
Starting point is 00:20:35 We're gonna change everything and if Rose goes in there's gonna be you know an asterisk or there's gonna be you put it again The Cooperstown is a museum like it's it's a room with some plaques in it you put again that Cooper's town is a museum like it's it's a room with some plaques in it and if you you can write whatever you want on those plaques you can write this guy was accused of this and this guy was doing that and same thing when it comes to Clemens or bonds or a separate wing for guys who were that's been suggested dark like that yeah like the dark wing or you know like hey you want to head down this side these are the guys who were accused of that's been suggested that are going to get out like the darklinger her you know like a here you want to head down this side
Starting point is 00:21:07 these are the guys who were used of this and accused of that but they were still i mean is barry bonds a hall of famer for you it's just like you could say well before he started taking stories he would have been pretty took them as far as we know how do we caught writing he never got pinched for it was it was also a gray area legal where they weren't they weren't testing
Starting point is 00:21:30 for it for a long time it was illegal in the United States yes but baseball tech like was not looking for it so you know Hayes like baseball voters are weird with this stuff like even if they they say you can put them in you know like these guys are eligible you can vote for Barry Bonds well who was it that had one less but Jeter got one one hero didn't one one guy put him in first ballot well because historically no one got in Jonas Siegel unanimous but like up until I think Rivera might have been the first one or maybe Ripken and that's so it was so stupid but we're talking like Hank Aaron
Starting point is 00:22:07 didn't get a unanimous first vote. And like Willie Mays. No one so didn't get a unanimous, you can't. It was like, well, Babe Ruth didn't get in and Ty Cobb, so you're not allowed. Yeah, it just became almost a tradition. Like, well, someone's gotta put their hand up and say, okay, I won't vote for him so he doesn't get unanimous.
Starting point is 00:22:23 But you know, like Bonds, like you could could there is a legitimate case to be made Barry Bonds there has never been a better baseball player ever and the and the the run he had when yes I believe he was using right he was unbelievable the numbers you talk about like Gretzky numbers, that's what he had. Yeah, he had like a 500 on base some years. It's like his old PS. Yeah, like he was like there was a there was a stat that came out recently. The judge in the first, you know, 40 games of this year, he had a 1329 OPS or something. And that was the that was bonds average from like 2000 to 2006.
Starting point is 00:23:04 Like it was like a six year run. It's like the Tiger Woods one It's like Shaffler is the number one player in the world for you know, 48 straight weeks And it's like well tiger had it for ten years straight, right? You know, like that's what bonds was bonds was Tiger bonds was Putting up numbers that no one's ever seen But he still was doing it. He well, the worry i like a little and never want to worse never one ever one and was very mean and unlikeable to and i was a lot of it is a lot of it is that sanctimony from from a lot of the writers for he looked down on the retreated them poorly right and
Starting point is 00:23:40 like i'm just i'm voting for you because yeah i don't like you how would you react yeah and he's not alone as's other guys that have have been caught in those crosshairs allegedly right not easy to deal with media hated them they did the media and people like i'm not giving you my vote is petty stuff but but as i mean i don't know i think
Starting point is 00:24:02 i would like there should be maybe a dark wing. That would be hilarious. Really? How do you decide who's in there though? Well, I like isn't Ty Cobb, I think is in the hall of fame and didn't he, what did he do? Well, he was just a horrible person. Is a horrible person. But that's a, that's a great, that's a sticky one. Well, that's because, like you talk about OJ Simpson. That's the morality. Yeah. Yes. You're right. OJ Simpson, like OJ's in the example. Yeah, they put that on the plaque the Well, yeah
Starting point is 00:24:31 You know, but he got off didn't he? I mean he did get off Then he wrote a book if I did it I did he went to jail for armed robbery like he spent yes nine years or something in prison. Yes They convicted felon or whatever. I don't know. That's a weird one. That's one of the craziest stories ever. You get off for double murder and then you're dumb enough to commit armed robbery. In a Vegas hotel room.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Yes. Over a memorabilia. Claiming it was your memorabilia and you were just going to reclaim it. Pretty good. Anyway. But yeah, that like Ty Cobb was historically a awful person like that's that's But that's a writing on hope I guess like and back then, you know, there's a lot of bad people morality clause, right? That's the what it is. It should be judged on
Starting point is 00:25:16 Which it in life it's not But you should be judged on your body of work as an athlete not as a person as a human But never that clear cut well, but I hear what you're saying I mean the easiest way to avoid all that is to simply do that Anything that happens away from the field is completely irrelevant there and flurry comes to mind You know is he in the Hall of Fame though? No yeah flurry's not in and he probably should be like that's the it Oh, and again. He's had yet struggles. He's you the, oh and again, he's had, he had struggles, he's, you know, and he's a long history. You know, I've known Thurman for years, but you could argue he was this big and played
Starting point is 00:25:53 in a very mean, mean league at that time. He was so fun to watch play. Great! Yeah, he was so much fun to watch play. And really hard to play against and had lots of jam and he'd chirp guys and man oh man, like that was a tough, like he was in those Battle of Alberta's fighting for his life back then when McSorley and McClellan, those guys are chasing him
Starting point is 00:26:14 around like he, but again that's a subject to opinion. Maybe we should just like let Alexa decide or Siri. Or Siri, or yeah I don't know what could be one of those but that's a conspiracy theory that what if who should be in the Hall of Fame or who not like these basically we're saying there's guys that should be in there why are they why aren't they they're not I mean ask the any like the hockey Hall of Fame is littered with guys who's like why is that guy in that guy's not in that guy is we don't know the criteria though exactly they've decided like it's like a closed door
Starting point is 00:26:47 like we know nothing we don't know who votes we don't know well yeah well we know who votes right don't know who voted for right yes they don't they don't explain you know the ballots or why someone gets in or once why someone doesn't get in yeah I don't know I mean I don't think they've ever excluded someone who was an obvious choice. I would say even Flurry is a borderline Hall of Famer. Yeah, I think there's, you know, Duck and Ronick got in after years. There was a lot of debates, right? Rob Vuhlmann, the analytics guy. Do you know Rob at all?
Starting point is 00:27:16 I don't know him, but I've read his books and he has an actual analytics formula for who he believes are Hall of Famers and not. And it's pretty darn close, like he says, like look in the future Chris Osgood would be a guy who's on the cusp. Oh man, really? Because you look at the markers of what he has analytically. It was very interesting, it's a very good read. But it was more from an analytics that he had not i think it if there was ever a conversation that should get away from that it her not get away from now but i know yours include the other like the
Starting point is 00:27:54 stardom in the celebrity correct it's the hall of fame because it's a it's fame like that's what it is and i remember having these conversations years ago about jack morris who never got in. The pitcher? Yes. But the argument was you couldn't, like when Morris was in town pitching, you're like, I got to see this guy pitch. Right.
Starting point is 00:28:13 Like, and yes, sure, he'd give up runs or his ERA wasn't great or whatever, but he was a horse that pitched mean and he threw fastballs and he pitched complete games. He threw the 10 inning game. Yes, he did famously in a playoff game. And you imagine one World Series innings. They're like waving the guy out like he pitched. I think it was a one nothing shutout 10 inning when he's with the twins. And but numbers, you know, career, you're a not great.
Starting point is 00:28:40 You look at his numbers. I don't know. But he was must see. But he was a star. He was a guy famous. You know, it was like a guy famous you know it's like Jack here's Jack Morris there's there's Jack Morris and it's like that should be worth something I think for in the Hall of Fame discussion well and how many guys have numbers but then it's like there's more to the story like if you just watch James Harden or
Starting point is 00:28:58 you just look at his numbers you guess this is the greatest player ever perfect example actually no yeah context though That's what it all is right, right? That's why Alexa couldn't do it is no Alexa wouldn't be although the elect You have to consider everything winning should be considered. Yeah, you know, and that's part of it, too You know, how how often did you win were there individual awards? Well, there was in this formula there there was, I believe it was like, were you a captain of your team? Like stuff like that. It was intangible. It was a, it was a, like there was a little bit.
Starting point is 00:29:31 I'm surprised you would include that because that's not something a person controls. No, but I mean it shows that you are, you know, known or viewed as a top leader or one of the top players on that team. Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think that's worth something. I think being a captain, I think being a captain of like an original six team is worth more. Right. I do.
Starting point is 00:29:51 I think. What if you're a bad captain? How do we measure that? Well, I mean, if you're a captain for like a decade, can you be a bad captain if you're a captain for a decade? I don't know. I guess it's possible. It's a good argument, but I think it's not
Starting point is 00:30:05 like it put somebody over the top. I think if there was a hundred points, it'd get like one extra type of thing. Yeah. But it's kind of neat. I think that's worth something. Yeah. All right. Best bet still to come later in the hour. Overdrive continues. TSN 1050N on the TSN app. Time now for TSN 1050 Time Saver Traffic. Florence, the collision has the right lane blocked. Delays start at the Gardiner. Southbound, it's slow from Finch to Eglinton. On the 407 eastbound, past Weston Road, a collision has the two left lanes blocked. On the 401 westbound, delays from McCowan to Dixie,
Starting point is 00:30:41 and eastbound from Dixie to Kennedy on the Gardner westbound slow going Jarvis to South Kingsway and Kipling to the 427 heading east it's delayed from Parkside to Dufferin in town southbound Royal York at Lawrence Avenue the collision has the southbound lanes blocked hurry to the all-in-one event for great offers and experience all the features that come standard in a Subaru from the Newstalk 1010 Center, I'm Adil Akani. First up with Karelnik and Koliakivu, weekday mornings 6 till 10 on DSN 1050. You ain't first, you're last.
Starting point is 00:31:16 All right, best bets later in the hour on Jet Stars tonight. Pulling for Halibuk to have himself a night, man. Well, he needs to. He's got to steal a game. You've got to do something where it's not curtains, because that building's tough to play in. Dallas, like, the crowd gets rocking. Haskinen's going to be back.
Starting point is 00:31:36 They'll be flying around. The Jets got to find a way to weather the storm and get after it, but I mean, tonight's the swing game. Yeah, you've got to have it and i want to pay you have to end carna hellebuck the manatee means he's played this year was given up five plus goals he did it three times in the regular season he's already done it for in the playoff on the all on the road all on the road
Starting point is 00:31:59 and the jets of laws four straight game fours getting outscored seventeen six i'm not sure that's relevant all i don't think it really is but still you know if lost eight straight two on the road yeah that's trouble like you got to stop the bleeding I get you have home ice throughout the playoffs which they do but you can't expect you're not winning games on the exactly exactly yeah and you lost a game at home already so So you've lost that opportunity. So big one for Winnipeg tonight. Game five Leafs Panthers tomorrow. Big one for the Leafs tomorrow. Jonas, what do you have in front of you here that you wanted to you want to get out there into the you know universe into the universe?
Starting point is 00:32:38 Well, so I know you have Hazy's list. I was driving here and I saw a restaurant that said number one vegetarian restaurant in the world and I just really love that well I'm gonna name my list the number one list in the world that's what we're doing I guess there's no checks and balances on that well you should be just knocked on the door and be like I'm challenging I don't I don't want yeah but that's I think you guys should go and brand your show the number one sports talk show in the World in the world. Yes from here on out on the plan. We are number one on planet Earth who says You can't dispute that
Starting point is 00:33:15 You can launch your own show and claim that that's the number one, right? But until you do that, we're gonna take that title and once you get your list going we're gonna hear Hayes go They've got the best. What is your say the third line about the third or fourth line i was adamant man i need to make sure i do clements had a great art though the third line for florida's been really good lately it was worthy of being recycled as a great day great take down i don't know what we do with you know it is list of all the greatest list in the world is what needs to happen for? The leaves to win game five. Okay, okay, and this is no particular order
Starting point is 00:33:48 This is just a variety of things that need to happen number one their power play has to be a lot better than it's been and It's interesting because there's been spurts. I think in the series where it's looked really good Yeah, and something Neal under brought up today when I was talking to him after practices They need to kind of stick with it Like he mentioned that they've had good moments and then it just kind of fades and fades and fades and you saw in game four I think it was their second in their third power play. I don't think they had a shot That can't happen. They're 250 to 450 in the series
Starting point is 00:34:18 Their power play needs to be a difference maker Flores penalty kills really good. That's the counter and they're really aggressive. Yep. But we saw in the regular season, this power play came through. It was Nyes and Taveras, especially down low. Neal Nderr, I don't think has gotten enough shots. I think he has four shots on the power play in the series. He tied for the team leading goals here in the regular season. Like they need something because their power play hasn't been good enough. Yeah. I would go a step further and just say you've got to win the special teams battle. Yeah, sure. That's probably further and just say, you've got to win the special teams battle. Yeah, sure. That's probably, I mean, that's an overarching,
Starting point is 00:34:47 but the special teams battle because, you know, Florida had, what were they, won for six, right? Obviously the Leafs- Lot of opportunities. They've spent too much time in the box. And some of it was dumb penalty. Like, you know, the hooking penalty, there was the Huckle over Glass, McMahon, they hit from behind. Like, you know, the hooking penalty there was the Mcmahon glass McMahon they hit from behind like you know you got to just be you got to
Starting point is 00:35:09 be excited but play up to that line because you can't you can't you can't be shorthanded six times tomorrow night and think you're going to win the game. Nope you just can't. So that one so that's number two. Okay discipline at the end of practice today I don't think it was an accident. Who did Craig Borube pull aside for a chat? Who do you think? Max Domey.
Starting point is 00:35:28 Yeah, I saw him. Taking four penalties in the series, McMahon's taking three. That just can't happen. I think their penalty kill the other night was actually pretty good. And then it was like the fourth opportunity in the period. It was like- Yeah, you're playing with fire. You're going to get, at some point you're getting burned there.
Starting point is 00:35:42 And so I think what's interesting is how do you walk that line? Because Florida is just going to keep needling you at some point you're getting burned there And so I think what's interesting is like how do you walk that line because Florida is just gonna keep Needling you need you and you kind of need like you kind of need to find that balance between like pushing back and Not taking a penalty and I think the whistle that's how it is like I and and there's no wrong nothing wrong with playing tough whistle to whistle and If the ref established he's gonna take one you might have to take a punch to the face, but you might get a two minute power play. Right, so that's, they did that a little bit better
Starting point is 00:36:11 against Ottawa. This one, I think they're still trying to establish. If you're ranking the best agitators in the league, does Florida have three of them? Three of them? Like the 10 best? Probably. They're really good at it. What number are we at number?
Starting point is 00:36:26 three three Take advantage of home ice whether that's the crowd whether that's the matchups We said it were a good regular season team. They earned home ice advantage This is this is a game you need like you're calling it a must-win gotta have it tomorrow night I think take advantage of home ice. Yeah, that's very much more than that Yeah for sure number four we could probably just play the clip of you The third line clip something from the bottom bottom six has got to get on something they got a score I don't think it's got a play. Well, I don't think they need to score
Starting point is 00:36:54 They just had to do a difference make a difference maker whether that's like a momentum generating shift whether that's spending time Like they can go out there get a shift in the offensive zone face off top line comes out and they know or that's a good that's good for them they've been scored on they haven't scored I don't I just don't think they've had any impact on the series yeah I thought yeah I'm not the one game I would say the first couple games there was an impact but I agree with you they went down to Florida it I mean I don't think anyone played that well in game four
Starting point is 00:37:22 honestly I mean you can give me some numbers exactly Joseph wall, but I just think the Leafs were outplayed They lost so many battles like and that's probably reasonable to expect like we keep talking about Matthews and Marner You got a score you get a contribute like that's the expectation when you're a player of that caliber You've you got to just you got to get the puck across the line But if you're on the third or fourth line, at a minimum you gotta win your battles. Like if it's a 50-50 battle, you gotta win those battles. And you can't take penalties because we, look at who's taken the penalties in the series,
Starting point is 00:37:53 it's been those guys. Yes. Right. So those are negative impacts. Yes, not only are you not scoring, you're doing other things. If you're gonna have a wash, you have to have a positive impact in a different way. That's the difference. You know, and you make a great point. McMahon and it's Domi with penalties and they haven't been on the score sheet.
Starting point is 00:38:12 Holmberg's taking a couple penalties like, just like you can't have. You have to find a way. Yep. Number five is, I don't think Wall has to outplay Barbrozsky, but it's got to be close. Like that game, that's close. Like if he does that again. Joseph Wall, my biggest thing is Joseph Wall, you know Hayes you talked about yesterday, like that's a wasted unbelievable effort. Yeah. Technically, I mean listen, Bobrovsky is allowed to play well too and he did. And I thought he made a couple really good saves. Again, timely saves. The one on Matthew Nye stands out for me because Marner steals it from under his glove
Starting point is 00:38:46 or kind of close to covering it, pops it back door. Bob gets a cross. If that's the first two games, that goes in the net. Because Bob is late to get there, it goes through him or whatever. He started to feel it a little bit. You gotta find a way to make life difficult for him. But I think you're right.
Starting point is 00:39:02 I think if you have a wash where the goalies, you say, oh, the goalies you say oh but Billy played the goalies played well mm-hmm you got to find something different you know to push through so and we've seen like we saw last year from wall he has the two games where he's just excellent and maybe that's what happens like maybe he's just excellent again tomorrow and it'd be a good well we say it all it all the time, yeah. I mean, the... I guess the easiest... You can't say easiest, but the most obvious way to guarantee a win is the goalie is perfect.
Starting point is 00:39:38 And you know, there's no such thing as a perfect game for a centerman or a defenseman. You can do a lot of things perfectly but it's you know this the parks in a stumble on you at some point you lose a drug and lose a battle you can blow it blow wheel like you can't you can't be perfect if you're matthews you can't be perfect if you're tan of right you can be if you're a goalie it's asking a lot like to sit here and say we got to shut them out tomorrow night is is ridiculous to to expect or demand right but it can happen like it is it can happen a pitcher can go out and just be on unhittable right and then all you
Starting point is 00:40:17 need is a runner to now the other guys gonna have to show their weight the other guys gonna have to score you gonna have to contribute you're gonna have to do your part to get past Bob but But, you know, when you shrink the series that becomes even more amplified in my opinion. We've talked about this in years past. Freddie Anderson comes to mind. Well, games one through six, really good series. Right. Not so great in game seven, so how do you define a series? And it was the timeliness of some of those goals and the types of goals, right? That's what I'm saying. Like if you recall recall in 18 again we're going back seven years they
Starting point is 00:40:46 were up four three going into the third period that game in Boston and he gives up a brutal one remember Jake de brusk blows the wheel and it gets past him anyway it doesn't matter but that's what we're talking about like it could be that tomorrow night it could be Lisa up three two going into the third and Florida throws 20 shots at him. You got to stop 20 man Yeah, like I know I know it's asking a lot, but you need a period stop 20 and then there's the win You know like that's where the idea of like flipping it and looking at Matthews is a conceivable like hey You need you need a Patrick in the third to do this. It can't happen ranting and stun it
Starting point is 00:41:23 More unrealistic though. Yeah, I mean there's lots of different factors that go into win but I agree that the easiest one is go now the goalie just well he stood on his head and they won it yeah you know but the team could play well in front of them and the goalie is just a sum of the parts that Bobrowski was a sum of the parts last game yeah played very well yeah and we've got a shot but not overly tested but the team in front of him played rock solid yeah they didn't give up a lot yeah but there was the for example the one bobbled putt Seth Jones falls down Nises in alone yeah and I like what he tried to do there because I could quick
Starting point is 00:41:57 and shoot high yeah because he went backhand shelf in game one and he's been so good on breakaway yes and I think he tried to catch him off guard and he just the puck bobbled and he shot him a little bit yeah but good list wait if the list is not done I'm really upset at my own this okay it should have been five because it's game five like yeah that idiot this is not the number one list in the world it's awful list in the world terrible number six is the stars it doesn't have to be all of them it doesn't have to be like you might just need one of them part of this system They have with Neil under Matthews Marner Tavares is that it does it you can just get a contribution from Tavares that wins you the game
Starting point is 00:42:34 So maybe it's maybe it's a two-goal game for Tavares. Maybe it's a I don't know. Maybe it's a hat trick for Matthews They just need one of their stars at minimum to be a star. Yes. Yeah, that's fair. And that gets back to what we were talking about earlier, where you can condense it and look at the last game or the last two games and say, okay, the bottom six or this and that, and it's not inaccurate,
Starting point is 00:42:58 but I would argue over 10 games, when you pull the lens out, they have gotten more than enough contributions from max patch ready and max domi and simone benoit and all of our act in larsen's like that yeah it's your turn now matthews mariner
Starting point is 00:43:16 in particular but the bars the lander i throw knives in there and i throw riley in there who i think of a good a big game to one i'd like riley's capable of being a big game player who is capable of contributing offensively and factoring into that you it's not it's not fair to start from the fourth line and make your way up that's not that's not the way it works anywhere else in the now should go start with the top guys you do it you lead the charge and then ideally the other guys chip you do it. You lead the charge and then ideally,
Starting point is 00:43:45 the other guys chip in two to put it over the top. Right. Well, if you gotta win three two tomorrow, that might be the case. It should be two goals for Matthews, one for Marner. That should be the expectation. Yeah. I think that's fair.
Starting point is 00:43:56 I was just pointing out, or would have pointed out Edmonton last night, two goals from Henry. Like sometimes you- Yes, and Kane. No, for sure. Sometimes that could happen, but- For sure.
Starting point is 00:44:04 At this point in the series series the history. Yeah. Yeah Not exactly. I mean mcdavid and dry subtle have done enough to say like well They got the game winner the the game before right and they didn't play well They were actually red rotten in that game But they got one opportunity in this court and skinner played well like he had a shutout last night. Yeah last night Yeah All right, best bet still to come overdrive continues tsn 1050 and on the TSN app. All right. Tomorrow we got game five Leafs Panthers. We got our PGA picks as well.
