My name is Maria.
Okay, I lied.
It's Mary.
But I just got back from a European-style holiday on MSC Cruises.
And it made me want to be more European.
Oh, the restaurante.
I mean restaurants.
Nightlife and shops in La Galleria.
Sorry, sorry.
Even North American stuff like water slides and a sports bar
and the views were bellissima.
Okay, this is a problem.

Let's holiday.
Restriction supply ships registered in Panama and Malta.
This hour of overdrive is powered by Fanduil.
Fanduil, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score.
All right, here we go, Overdrive, off and running.
TSN 1050 on the TSN app, your home smart speaker, up on TSN4.
We made it.
We're live at Boston Pizza, Polo Park in Winnipeg.
There's Doogie.
On the horse.
Met Tuffy earlier today.
Noodles could not be more uncomfortable around that horse.
You were so uncomfortable.
He asked the handler, where to do you?
do I stand so I don't get kicked in the junk?
He asked that right off the left.
Animals don't like my face.
Why would it, the horse, if in 20 years, they said it's 21 years old, that horse,
I guarantee you the first time it attacks a human, it'll be me.
It did look uncomfortable around you, and you're right.
Exactly.
You're right.
You're cruelly uncomfortable.
It was horse eyeing me.
You and Tuffy the horse, and that was Tuffy, who 13 years ago tried to storm into the
Royal York in Toronto and got stopped, and it became a national incident because everyone
And west of Toronto said, what are you, idiots?
Let the horse in.
I think the next day it went back in, didn't it?
Yeah, they eventually allowed it in.
So we love seeing that.
And it's great to be in Winnipeg.
Safe travels.
We all made it.
Shout out to the peg.
A massive shout out to the peg.
Yes.
And it's been 25 years since I've been here, Hasey.
And I don't want to sound cheesy when I say this.
But when I got off the bird and I just took a breath in, it felt like home.
It felt like home.
And I love the peg, and I am so glad we're here.
It's a beautiful thing.
It was a beautiful thing getting here.
I had to, I had the battle of my life flying out here.
Oh, yeah?
The battle of my life.
There was the Wayne Gretzky of armrest battles with me.
Before we get into the battles, you know how he does, like, really weird stuff when we travel, right?
Yes, exactly.
So I put eyes on this guy, and he comes over to me in the airport.
They're not boarding the plane yet.
It's clearly not happening.
Yeah.
Everyone, all the big wheels are standing in the first class section.
There's nobody going anywhere.
In typical Brian Hayes fashion, he walks over to me and he goes, oh, well, we're not boarding yet?
And I go, I was thinking to myself, well, obviously not.
So we're not boarding.
And then he just sat down.
Then I never saw him again.
And then you can carry on to what happened when you sat down with armrest guy.
Yeah, so I came into contact with the Wayne Gretzky of armrest battles because I was lucky enough.
I had the window seat.
And I'm a big dude.
There was a guy who sat down with a puffy winter jacket, almost twice the size of me,
and he immediately established territory.
Immediately said, I'm here.
You're not going to be anywhere close to my armrest.
And it was a three-hour flight where I was trying to maneuver.
At one point, I did the fake push his arm, like to go grab something off the bag.
By the time I got my arm back up, he had already reestablished.
I almost wanted to shake his hand and say, you're the greatest of all time.
You're the greatest of all time.
And he had the puffy coat on.
He had the puffy coat, and he just stared at the back of his seat, and he said,
I'm here for the gray cups.
I'm here for the great cup.
The best part of it is this other guy showed up, and he was really small, like not the biggest dude.
And he goes, he wasn't even in the right seat.
The other dude said, that's my seat.
And you did the sign of the cross and said, you better sit down beside me.
And the guy said, oh, don't worry about it.
And you freaked out.
I internally was having a discussion.
because the guy who I was battling with was in the wrong seat.
Yes, yes.
And it turns out, you know, someone smaller than Doogie was going to sit in between us.
And he just said, you're already comfortable.
You sit there.
I'll go sit on your side.
You've got to speak up then.
You speak up and you say, get in your right seat.
I was in such a good frame of mind because we were coming to Winnipeg.
That's fair.
I said, nothing can ruin this flight.
We're so happy to be here.
The Grey Cup is here.
You know what's cool about being here is, A, it's right in the middle of the country.
Yeah.
Like this is the point of the country where you get the east and the white.
West kind of colliding. But we've been here six hours. I've seen Newfoundland. I've seen
horses. I've seen B.C., I've seen Saskatchewan. I've seen Montreal. Yes, Calgary people from
Calgary. There's so many people that come in for it. The fan base is massive. And I flew in
from Alberta this morning and same thing. The plane was just jam full of fans. It was awesome.
Yeah, it's great. It's great to be here. And I know this is the Winnipeg crowd.
We're going to steal the coach. We're here to bring Mike O'Shea back to
Toronto. That's what we're going to do.
We're going to get booed. You're going to get booed five minutes into the show. What's going on here? We flew in to bring Mike O'Shea back to Toronto. PJ back to T.O. with Mike O'Shea. Yeah. So we got the nail gun coming up later this afternoon. We will set the scene for the Great Cup. We got the Thursday night or tonight. Hays and Bro on the clock. Luke will be here. Luke's coming up in studio.
Al's brother's literally on a cruise right now. Really? He's literally on a cruise. Well, Car Depot last week.
Cruz today, so no contact
with him. I have no idea who I'm supposed to pick.
Well, I got handed this when I
walked in. I love that.
And you guys, I don't know if you lay eyes
on that. Millie Vanilly
Frauds. Frods. Millie,
vanilla frauds. That's Owen Wilson.
That's, oh, you actually look like
you're in your playing days in that bet. That is.
That's a stock photo of him playing, for sure.
And Luke, that's a Super Bowl pick for him.
So you guys actually look pretty good, but
that's what I'm looking for.
I think there's a lot of Hazenbro support.
Winnipeg. I think there is, too. There's a lot of
Hazenbro's support. Wait until
Luke lays eyes on this. I don't know if he's going to be
happy or mad or pissed off.
You guys are in that Pintor. What kind of car
are you driving? The Hyundai Pony.
The Hyundai Pony.
Yeah, there it is. Milly
Pinnleys. The frauds. Well, so
yeah, Luke will join us. We've got
the Queen of Winnipeg coming in here later
this hour. Sarah or Lesko will be here.
Put it together. Yeah, Sarah. Everybody
loves Sarah. The Queen
of Winnipeg will be here.
runs the show so we look forward to that and uh the jets are actually in seattle tonight
and oh and i the three of us we went for lunch we did request the leaf game on tv and that got
shut down pretty quickly yeah i don't know we're going to find a way to watch we're going to find
a way to get the leaf game you got to do a double header tonight right here watch right here
in polo park at the boston pizza you can watch you can watch the leaf game and then right
into the jet it's perfect because the jets are on the west coast exactly so we can all be
happy we can get a leaf game and we can get a winnipeg jet game tonight and um um
This lineup, I'll tell you what, Matthew's not playing tonight, Tanev not playing tonight,
Stolars, Wall not playing tonight.
So your number one center, arguably your number one defenseman,
both of your goaltenders who are tandem.
L.A. is a rock star team on the road.
The Leafs have been pumped three straight games.
I don't know, man.
Like, this is the one that find a way to win, though.
That's it.
It'll be so leafy.
The Leafs will find a way to win tonight.
What I can't figure out is the goaltender, though,
because I don't know if he was pulled after the second period.
And then he just pulled himself after that, or what happened to the gold tender?
Like, is it now listed as an injury or something?
It's day to day.
It's day to day without any update, which...
I don't know, man.
Like, you kind of need him tonight, but he's not going.
So it doesn't matter.
He'll be playing.
Yeah.
And Joseph Wall, we presume, will return at some point this weekend.
Somebody's going to go Brian Daibel on Joseph Wall,
and they're going to be looking behind the tent, and they're like,
when are you coming back out of there?
Just sticking his mug right into medical room.
Someone's going to go Daibel on Joseph Wall,
and be like, any chance?
Well, that would be Baroube, right?
Baroube will shave his head and look behind a blue tent for Joseph Wall
and be like, you better be ready to go.
Dog, come here, I want to talk to you as well.
You're right.
So Hildaby is Russell Wilson.
Is that where you're suggesting?
That's right.
I don't know.
I don't know. Like Hildoby's got to have a night.
Well, they all have to find a way to pick up a win tonight if people leaves.
Every night when you're watching these games, there's been some weird things happening.
Even watching last night, I watched that Ebenton game.
and they looked like they lost in regulation.
All of a sudden, it's a hair offside,
and then they end up winning in overtime.
Rosslovick again.
Rosslovick again, but they were literally dead in the water
with 20 seconds left, connect these scores.
So that's a loss in regulation.
All of a sudden, they win in overtime.
Like, it's been some weird things happening in the National Hockey League.
We have our list.
I don't know if we're going to get to that at some point.
I think we will.
I will say one of my five items on my observation list
is the central divisions,
the only one that's actually following suit.
Stabilizing.
It's Colorado, Dallas, Winnipeg.
Yeah.
Like those three are monsters.
They're great teams.
Winnipeg obviously, you know, dismantled Vancouver the other night.
I think they're going to win tonight in Seattle.
I don't think the court's playing.
I believe you still heard.
And it's Colorado, who is the best team in the league right now,
based on the way they're playing.
They are.
Dallas had a bit of a slow start, but they're starting to rock.
Yeah.
And Winnipeg.
Like every other division has Anaheim or Montreal or Pittsburgh.
like a team that maybe you didn't.
Exactly.
It's the Central Division,
which you could argue
was right there with the Atlantic,
the last three or four years,
as the best and deepest division in the league.
A lot of good teams there and a lot of talent.
They're the ones that are predictable.
But it has been a lot more predictable in the Central.
But the league is so jammed up from last place to first place.
It's crazy.
The parody, I don't know if the fans,
do you love it or you're not?
Like, that's the thing.
Do you like that there's no chance,
you're not sure.
I think fan bases would like it, Jamie,
because their team seems to always
have a chance instead of being out of it
a month into the season.
And one of my things, in my observation,
you mentioned in the Central Division,
we do love our Jets,
we hope nothing but the best and for success,
but that Colorado team looks like a wagon.
And Kail McCar and Nathan McKinnon,
they might start bringing home some hardware this year.
It looks like I was talking with Frankie Carrado the other day,
and we were talking about McCar.
It looks like he might go on one of those Lidstrom runs
where he starts picking off some Norris's year after year after year.
He's just that good.
Yeah.
And McKinnon looks like.
he's that much better than everybody else in the league.
So they might have one of those special years where
hardware team, hardware individuals,
and they have a ton of success.
That's what it looks like.
I hear you.
And to back it up with the Leafs to line up
and what we're talking about with the Maple Leafs,
one of the other items on my list was
speeds killing right now in the National Hockey League.
If you're not boogieing out there in the ice,
you're not doing much.
And you notice the teams that are struggling.
They're not moving that fast.
Well, they're the bigger, more physical teams.
Yeah.
That's really what it is.
Anaheim, Colorado, Montreal.
Those teams, they're boogieing out there in the ice.
They're moving around at a quick pace
and they're having success with it.
Yeah.
And if you're not doing that,
Winnipeg has it,
but they just kind of do it in a different way.
You know what I mean?
Like,
they don't have necessarily speedsters.
They just play really fast.
But if you're not playing fast or moving fast,
you're not doing much out there.
Absolutely.
Well,
and they got rock star goaltending.
I mean,
the goalie's as good as...
Hellibuck is as good as anybody.
And he's so reliable.
Every night.
Every single night.
Like, when was the last time he missed a start?
I don't know.
I'm sure it's happened.
Somebody Google it.
Yeah.
Somebody will Google it here at Boston Pizza.
But he's a machine.
Gene. Hellebuck just plays every single night.
He likes to play. He wants to play.
Eric Commerry is a good backup, but it's Helibuck's
the guy, and
you can play him in every situation. I think the biggest
thing for him is managing
his minutes, because he wants to play,
and he can play back to back. He can play in all
scenarios, because he's not a guy
who's super active in the net.
He just makes saves,
readjust, makes saves, and the team,
the way they defend around him,
it just goes hand in hand.
And, you know, Morrissey's a stud,
Shifley has to be in the Team Canada conversation, absolutely.
What are we thinking here, folks?
Shifley on Team Canada.
Let's hear it for Mark Shifley in here.
Playing to the crowd.
Yeah, it's just.
The mayor of Winnipeg.
Exactly.
The O-Dog.
Yeah, well, listen, it'll be a difficult explanation if he doesn't.
That's the thing.
Yeah.
Like if Shifley doesn't make the team, I don't know who's got to make that call,
whether it's Armstrong or Jim Nill or whatever, but that's,
That's a tough call to make.
Because you can call, like, let's say it's Connor Bedard.
He's 20.
You can call him and say, you've got four more Olympic games.
I don't think they care about that.
If you're talking about an athlete, a competitor, they'll be like, I deserve to be on it right now.
Possibly.
I'm just saying I think it's easy.
I'm saying it's easy to make that call.
Let's say I'm Doug Armstrong, role play.
I'll call Bedard.
I'll call him and say, listen, I'll explain it to you.
I know you're heartbroken.
I'm not saying you don't think you deserve to be on it.
This is it for Shifley.
He's not going to be there in 2030.
Right.
This is it for certain, like there's certain guys who, you know,
you've got to call Drew Dowdy if he doesn't make the team,
although he's done it before and he's won his Olympic Colts.
But like if you talk to guys who are late 20s or into their early 30s,
this is your one chance.
Yeah.
A guy who's 20, Maclin Celebrini, who's 19.
Those guys are going to, they're going to do it for the next three or four Olympic games.
They're the new faces of the NHL.
But what I look at it with Shifley is it's about being a complete player.
you already know pretty much who's if McDavid and McKinnon are your one and two
centermen regardless unless you push one to the wing you know now you're looking at
your third and fourth line center like Shifley to me brings so much more to the table than
some of like Celebrine's had a great start obviously doing very well with the points and all that
but Shifley's like he's a man like he's more physically developed all of that type of stuff
and he can he knows how to play in all these situations that's why I would fight for him
and say he needs to be there ahead of a guy like Salabrini or Bedard.
Where does Zach Heimann come into play?
I don't see how he can be on the team.
A lot of people have him pencils right in there.
Craig and MJ had him on.
Craig and MJ did their mock team this week or what they...
Playing his first game, either possibly tonight, most likely Saturday.
I think it's, yeah, I think it's Saturday.
I thought I saw the roster, but the point being is he's got to hit the ground running.
It would be six months of real time that he hasn't played a game.
now he's a good player he knows how to play with great players as well
but he would be a guy that I think that they have to monitor
how he he plays well like you look at this again we're watching on TV with
this is Craig and MJ's consensus roster you'll notice that our boy Seth Jarvis
who's from Winnipeg isn't on that team like I'm taking Seth Jarvis over
Zach Hyman all day right now yeah like all day because Hyman hasn't played
it's not that I don't love Zach Hyman but I know like Seth Jarvis is young
hungry and playing
and ready to play.
He was at the Four Nations,
and Heimann wasn't at the Four Nations.
Well, one of the things might be,
and ultimately it was Mitch Marner,
who went on the line with Connor McDavid
to win the goal in overtime,
but maybe they got tired of juggling the lines
with Connor McDavid to try to get him going,
and they know that works.
Sure.
But the other side of it is this guy has not played.
How the hell do you know what he looks like?
It's a big gamble.
It is a gamble, and I think this is why
you can choose extra players.
If Hyman doesn't hit the ground running
and doesn't settle in,
and they end up choosing him, he might be a guy that is out of the lineup,
and they go play somebody else there.
You've got extra forwards that are going to push into that role.
I mean, Celebrini, Bedard, they have to be in the conversation with how great.
Shifley has to be in the conversation because of what, you know,
how great he has been consistently over the years.
He's not surprising you.
I think the biggest thing, we're looking at Bedard, his maturity process,
we're seeing a progression.
We already know what Mark Shifley is.
You've seen, you've got years of sample size.
That's the thing.
They know what Zach Hyman is capable of.
He just has to get to that level.
Can he get to that level in the next two months?
That's the biggest challenge.
That'll be the question, for sure.
So, yeah, Edmonton, they got a win in overtime last night.
And, again, we're out in Winnipeg, very positive about their team right now.
I can only imagine what's going on in Toronto, though, with this lineup this evening.
Like, I will say, it's amazing how a couple of poor games, poor start, and these are big names.
Like, you can't downplay.
When Matthews is out of the lineup, it's a massive, massive gap in the lineup.
Tanev's out.
Your two starters are out.
But you look at this lineup, and then you consider the way they've been playing.
Like, they got Max Domey who has not had a good year.
Max is playing second-line center tonight.
Like, this is going to be a struggle for them, and we discussed it yesterday what they have to do.
I think goaltending is a big part of it.
I just don't know how much you can ask out of Dennis Hildovey.
This would be his third straight appearance.
It's asking a lot out of him.
and they've got to cut down on these like egregious, massive mistakes.
You've got to cut them in half at a minimum.
That seems reasonable that you can possibly read the play
and be a little bit smarter in terms of cutting down on these crazy, crazy breakdowns.
Well, who's out on defense right now?
Well, it's Tanna that's out.
And they've taken Myers out for Dermis.
So they're giving him a shot.
Mirmus.
Mermis.
Dumbo.
Rick.
Dumbo.
Dumbo.
Dumbo.
Dermis.
Dakota Murmus.
Yeah.
So, yeah, I mean, which is, that had to happen.
Like, Myers had to come out.
Yeah, you had to make an adjustment there, but, like, we're looking at it right here.
It's not a surprise on Fandual.
Kings are pretty heavy favorites tonight.
This is the thing as they should be.
Of course, I'm not disputing that.
Keep in mind, the players look at the whiteboard.
They know, okay, Matthews isn't here.
You know, our number one goaltender's not playing.
That's when you get better efforts.
That's where you get collectively, because not everybody's going to try and go out and paint
a picture out there.
You're just going to play hard, straight-line hockey.
I could see them winning 4-3 or 3-2 in a tight game tonight.
L.A. might be fat and happy because they went into Montreal the other night.
Keep in mind, if you spent the night in Montreal and went down to old Montreal
and had yourself a night.
Which we have many times.
Many times.
It's our first rendezvous in the peg.
We've done Montreal many times.
Well, I've been to the peg back in the 90s, and there was some, you know, I can't remember.
I can name one of the, I think it was Christine's.
It was something like that.
Yeah, gritty old spot downtown?
It was good.
It was a good place.
I'm suspecting that it's not here anymore.
That name of that establishment sounds a little suss, to be honest with you.
We'll look into it.
Yeah, I'll have to look into it.
Doogie was probably there last night.
Doogie flew in last night to run the whole operation.
But yeah, that's what a good producer would do.
Exactly.
Set the scene.
Set the scene, duke.
Site survey.
Site survey, exactly.
No, but they, like, Winnipeg has some great places to offer, but Montreal as well.
So you never know if the Kings might have had a rookie dinner or something like that.
Well, Copatar's last dance through Eastern Canada, too, right?
It's true.
That Copartar's playing in his last game in Toronto.
He just played his last game at the Bell Center.
They'll have some big announcement, the L.A. Kings.
Every time they wheel through, they'll be like,
Cope deserves one last Vesna.
They like to get that message.
They get their message out.
Here's the thing, though.
You're not doing, like, what Kobe did or anybody else?
No, I don't think so.
You think the Leafs will give them a shout out on the Jumbotron or something like that?
Is he that level, Copartar?
He's a great player, future Hall of Famer.
I just don't know.
When you announce your retirement, like, hey, this is my last year.
Every game you play for the last, like, Mark Andre Fleury was cool,
like, because he went through the league and was shaking hands with people.
Ovi called his whole team back to shake hands with Mark Andre Fleury in his last game.
Like, do you do that for Copaar?
I just don't know.
I'm not sure.
I wouldn't be shocked if they acknowledged him.
I thought he said today this is the only rink he hasn't scored in.
like he's never scored in Toronto throughout his career.
But you know he's scoring now.
Now it's like basically a lot.
Yeah, that's a lot to score.
Just put your house on the line because Copatar is going to snipe tonight.
But like Sid, it's an interesting, you know, question because I don't recall, I guess Flurry was the last one in the NHL.
But as great as Flurry is, he's not like an all-time great legend.
He's not Mount Rushmore.
Right.
Where I hope like Sid will make that announcement.
I don't know if he will based on his personality.
But I would like to see that happen.
Like, this is my last dance.
I'm doing the whole tour.
Yeah, same as Gretzky.
Last time in Canada, last everything.
I think he's worthy of that.
I think Sid and Ovi are worthy of going right in that year they're there retire.
That would be cool.
I think that they both deserve that.
You don't like to come up with excuses why it shouldn't happen.
It happened for Gretz.
It happened for Mario.
As soon as they're done, put them in.
Well, then Ovi, the thing is, is this Ovi's last year?
He hasn't announced it.
It is.
It feels like it is.
Yeah.
They made tickets up and all that stuff, like it's his last year.
It feels like it is, which, again, it's disappointing.
Like, I hope he will make that announcement.
It would be cool.
Let everyone know.
That way, you know, if he's coming to you, say he comes to Winnipeg, it's his last time.
Hey, I'd like to go lay eyes on him.
Yes, exactly.
Give him a little send-up.
It would be great, but I just don't know if, like, Sid is a guy who wants zero attention.
I don't know that Govey's a guy who wants that attention, but he's a lot more affable when it comes to dealing with fans and stuff like that.
It's more comfortable.
Yeah, more comfortable, that's the word.
But Cid is like a Canadian legend.
Like I'm saying as like the seven Canadian markets when he plays there for the last time,
I'd like to believe there's an understanding, hey, this is it.
And it should be, they should give him a shout out.
For sure.
Sid's one where it's almost ceremony before the game stuff.
Like, thanks for everything.
Because it's not only what he's done in Pittsburgh as a Canadian.
It's got arguably the greatest Canadian resume of all time.
Well, the Golden Goal.
Yeah, and 2014.
And look what he did at the four nations.
Do you expect a baseball scenario where there's gifts at every stop?
Sure, why not?
Give them a Harley.
Why not?
I found the gifts got a little bit crazy.
Yeah, they do.
And again, at times it's like, are you, like you're a great player, but I don't know if your gift.
We hated you for years.
What do you really expect us to give you?
Was it the Oakland A's gave like a dirty old bottle of wine, a $30 bottle of Wolfblast.
Miguel Cabrera.
Like someone totally forgot.
Somebody in the PR department is like, go find us.
some wine right now you realize everyone's giving him gifts like yeah of course yeah it was
basically a 30-dine bottle of wine thanks for everything it's been a real pleasure
watching you play for the last 20 years all right sarah oleskey's going to be around the table
so she will pump the tires of the jets the blue bombers yes right she will set the scene for what
we can expect in winnipeg the next couple of days so we'll catch up with sarah we got luke wilson
coming up. The nail gun, Dave Nailer, will join us.
Leaves in action tonight. We'll tee that up.
The Winnipeg Jets. We've got the Thursday nighter,
Hazenbro, on the clock. We're live at Boston
Pizza, Polo Park, out in the
Winnipeg, what we call is, the
suburbs? No, this is downtown, I guess, right?
This is Pegg, Vegas. Midtown.
Midtown. We're in Midtown.
Exactly. Overdrive continues.
TSN 1050, and on TSN4.
All right, overdrive continues, powered by
Fandoo, bringing you more ways to play your game
your way. We're live at Boston Pizza, Polo
Park out in Winnipeg.
It's a beautiful spot.
We're loving it.
Everyone has been very welcoming,
although Sarah Oleski just walked in and completely rolled over everything we've been building towards.
We're trying to be men of the people here.
We tried to get some street crowd around here.
Standing ovation for her.
Standing ovation for the Queen of Winnipeg.
Great to see you.
Thanks so much for having me on, guys.
Welcome to Winnipeg.
Yes.
We love being here.
This is amazing.
It's a good crowd.
Yeah, good crowd.
We've got a great crowd out here.
We've got a lot of fans out in Winnipeg.
You sure do.
I hear about it all.
All the time.
Yeah?
Yes.
Okay.
Especially, I mean, always when you guys were on radio,
but especially since you guys are now streamed on TSN as well,
and you're available on TV and YouTube, people watching all the time out here.
He asked a stupid question.
Even if Hayes doesn't know anything about Winnipeg?
Well, he had a-try.
He had a stupid move today.
We wanted to do a double shot.
We wanted to do, he wanted to do Leafs early into the Jets game,
and he asked somebody, hey, where can I go watch the Leafs game?
when they basically told them to stuff it.
So there's no, like, secret Leafs, like, crowd around Winnipeg.
He was disappointed to find that out.
Well, I mean, I thought part of the reason you were out here
was because you weren't happy with the way that things were going with the leaves.
And you needed to have a break from it.
That's true.
We were here to escape.
Let's have a cheat team for a couple days.
The Winnipeg Jets.
There you go.
We're on it.
Will you accept our, like, will you invite us on the bandwagon?
You guys, you can have the Leafs as your Eastern Conference.
team, and then you can have the Jets as your Western Conference.
Perfect.
That works for us.
Because we know that, oh, I mean, you're a, you, well, noodles, you too.
You both have been on the Jets.
I told these guys, Sarah.
I told them when I got off the plane, it felt like home.
It felt like home when I got off that bird.
That's what it is.
And what Sarah's alluding to is you would pick the Jets to win the cup every single year.
For five years in a row.
You have to the row.
We both took it.
You saw it.
I know, I did where it was just like, you know what, they're so good.
and they're so deep and they're so physical
and they've got this guy and they got that guy
and then they got their goaltender and it's like
they don't get it done.
They're kind of a little bit like the one thing in common about the Leafs
is they haven't got it done either,
but you just fall in love again in the off season
but you've got to think that one of these years, Sarah,
their goaltender is going to play like a rock star come playoff time
and he's going to put them over the hump.
Yeah, absolutely.
And look, he's off to another great start this season
and the Jets, he set the bar very high last year
winning the President's trophy
and they get off to that historic start
and they're 15 and one.
And so this year, it hasn't been another historic cert,
but they're still finding their groove
and they're getting everybody back.
If people hadn't heard Dylan Samberg's back in the lineup tonight,
he's going to make a season debut,
and that's a huge boost for the Jets D.
So, you know, Hallibuck, from our perspective,
when I think of like the face of the Jets,
as a kid, it would have been Dale Howard Chuck for sure.
Yeah.
Then it would have been Tim Mussolani.
I'm curious who you would or tell us, I guess,
if there's like a known face of the,
Winnipeg Jets.
Is it Hellebuck now?
Is it Shifley?
Yeah, I mean, probably Shifley is still what I would go with.
And I think that naturally, partly too, you look at the forward, you look at the
just some of the highlight reels.
I mean, you see that more so than maybe disrespect to the goalies.
But I think that they have a core group that's whether it be Shifley, Josh Morrissey,
Connor Hallibuck, Kyle Connor, being here, Adam Lowry, of course, is revered in the city
as well.
And it's such a great captain.
It was a fantastic choice of captain.
And so they have that core group that's been together for a number of years.
And I think that when you look around,
those are the ones that people really think embody this Winnipeg Jets team.
Plus, goaltenders are lunatics for the most part.
Well, I wasn't going to say it.
If you look at, I love Helibuck's media.
He'll give up seven.
He'll be like, I felt great.
You're not going to believe this, but I felt amazing in there.
But he had that confidence about him.
From the beginning.
From the beginning.
And that's why he's so great.
But we were talking about it earlier before you came on.
What's the noise around?
Mark Shifley and Team Canada.
Are you trying to create a buzz around here and get him going?
Well, I think with the start that he had, too, how can you not have him in consideration for it?
You look at, I think we're going to see a number of Winnipeg Jets, whether it be on the American team, Canada, Josh Morrissey.
I think it would be a lock to be on that blue line.
And I think that with the way that Mark's been playing, when you look at the season as a whole,
he certainly has to be one of the players that's considered to be right there.
I think it's going to be interesting.
You think of the talent that is available to Doug Armstrong company to be able to choose from for this roster.
I think it's going to be really exciting to be able to see what they put together.
Well, and if he gets on the team, which we're pulling for him, I guess he can lean on Jonathan Taves too, right, for experience.
And I mean, it still almost feels like surreal that Taves is playing and he's playing in his hometown.
Like how is he handled everything, the comeback, the fact that he's back in Winnipeg,
He started to tire a little bit yet?
He must be like, I need a breather today.
Not playing it two years a long time.
He's not a young guy.
No, and do you think about how much he's played over his career,
whether it be on the international stage,
or then all of the playoff runs that they did as well.
No, I think that he's handling well.
One of the things that he always points to is that he's still,
patience is something that he's working on.
But he's being dominant in the circle.
You look at his face-off percentage.
I mean, he's been key for this team,
and he's one of the league leaders in it.
So you look at the way that he has been able to come back in it,
he had a goal in the last game.
And I think that you see his game coming along.
The great thing that when you're looking at Taves,
though, I don't think that anyone's looking at what he's doing
in this first half of the season.
It's about the second half of the season
and into the playoffs and what he can do.
But you go around town.
I mean, they have the Jonathan Taves Sportsplex here.
And there are a number of players that are from Winnipeg
that play in the NHL.
mean, Jonathan Taves, obviously, is on a different level.
Do you sense that he's had an adjustment?
Because keep in mind, he has this aura about him.
For sure.
Captain Sirius, he's won cups, he's done all these things.
He comes, this isn't his team.
Right.
He's joining a team that already has tremendous leadership, tremendous stars.
And do you think there was a learning curve or did they accept him right away?
And he's just kind of melted into that leadership group.
I think just melted into it.
And they look at this leadership group, one of the things that they've really been,
they've emphasized and that they've also been complimented on
is that it isn't just a few players.
And so they do have a strong leadership group.
And I think one of the things that he was looking forward to
was not being the main player.
It's not being that guy that after every loss
that comes out and speaks to the media
or that is wearing it all on his shoulders
in order to get this team to the next level.
And so he's just, he wants to be one of the guys.
He wants to be able to get his game back to the way that it was.
but certainly there's expectations that come along with it as well
because of what he's accomplished and because of the city that he's in.
Absolutely.
Sarah Oleski with us.
We're live in Winnipeg.
How's the city handling the Blue Bombers not being in the Great Cup
for the first time in 35 years?
They go every single year.
I'm looking around right now.
I mean, there's some disappointment.
There is no doubt about it.
Yeah, obviously everybody was hoping.
Anytime that you host a Grey Cup,
everybody's hoping that your hometown team is going to be,
and especially with the way that the bombers have played in recent years.
But, you know, this was a season that was not like the other ones that we have seen,
and I think you saw the ups and downs that went along with it anyways.
But there is nothing, and I don't know, have any of you taken part in a Grey Cup weekend or festivities?
Just in Toronto, like being in Toronto.
There's nothing like it.
And actually, I was talking with James Duffy earlier today,
and we were talking about how it's just the ultimate Canadian.
But there is, especially when it is in the prairies, there's nothing that beats a gray cup weekend.
It is so much fun.
It is the ability to be able to go around and also see so many people that make this a yearly event for them.
And so you see the same faces all the time.
I can walk down the street and go, oh, I recognize that.
That person is an Alawatts fan.
Or that person you know because you've seen them at every gray cup.
And it's just a great sense of community.
It is a ton of fun out there.
and there's a real energy in the city when it happens.
I've been to a few, obviously, when they're in Evanton and growing up there,
and all my drunk buddies would be running around.
You sneak in a Mickey of whiskey or whatever in your coat.
I don't know if you can do that anymore.
I probably shouldn't be talking about that.
Probably in Winnipeg.
But what are we talking about?
Some kind of like roped off area here or like, is it indoors, outdoors?
What are these big parts?
There's a whole mixture of it.
The whole city's just on fire.
The convention center.
We're right beside it, man.
It's going to be wild.
It's a full out party and everybody gets it.
It's not a lot of bar fights and anything.
It's just more like, let's go have a bunch of fun and drink a bunch of booze for 48 hours.
That's what it is.
And it's different from so many other events because it doesn't have that real corporate feel to it.
So one of the things Duffy was saying is, I mean, Super Bowl, obviously, it's very corporate with it.
That's not the way the Grey Cup is, and they welcome everybody in.
And it's just everyone's out to have a good time.
Yeah.
So what can you tell us about the next Argos coach, Mike O'Shea?
What can you tell us?
We're bringing him home.
Why do you keep bringing you that?
I'm just pointing it out.
Don't yell at me.
I'm just...
I'm just a reporter.
We want to get to know them before we got to interview them.
How's that story going on?
You know what?
It's going to be one of those ones.
You two are going to be embraced in the city like No-Tamore.
You are going to be back on a plane.
Tonight.
They might kick me out of here.
100%.
You're going to be doing it from the home studio tomorrow.
We have a security guard for me.
Only for me.
These guys are welcome.
It's only for me.
But it is kind of weird.
Like, does the no contract kind of mean?
like this dynasty is going to go in a different direction or what's your sense of it all?
Well, I think that it'll be interesting to see what happens. Look, I think that eventually
all good things do come to an end, whether that means this upcoming season and whether that
means with Mike O'Shea or not. Who knows? But you look at the players that the bombers have had in
recent years and their core group. And I mean, they're older, right? And things change. Things evolve
and you've got to turn over as well. And so I think it'll be very interesting. We've already seen
obviously with the move of Ryan Dinwiddie to Ottawa and being not only a coach but GM,
you've seen everything that's starting to trickle down right now,
and I think it'll be a very interesting off season, both on the field and off.
So, again, I'm coming off as the bad guy here.
I'm just pointing out the obvious stuff.
Here comes another one. Here we go.
Here we go.
That's your job as the host.
That's right.
Thank you.
The fact that the riders are in the Great Cup in Winnipeg.
Yeah.
How is that going over?
We hate that, don't we?
We don't like that.
We don't like that.
We don't like that.
If you were to go, if you are a Blue Bomber fan, no, you certainly just the same as if you're a Riders fan.
When the Blue and Gold invade Regina, you don't like that either.
It is a great rivalry that exists between them.
No, you certainly, I think probably a number of people were hoping that BC was going to be able to pull that off
because it's a little bit easier to take if BC or Montreal, if someone has to win on your home field,
as long as it's not the green and white, then...
When's the last time the green and white won, though?
It's been a long time.
Yeah, it's been a long time.
Let's just support them.
Let's support them this weekend.
No, no, no.
No, no.
No, no.
No, no.
Now we're going to have to add two to the left.
You're going to have to share your body.
You're going to me.
I'm the only guy.
I'm on the alo-as.
I'm on the a lot of buddies.
That's right.
We have lots of buddies who are Saskatchewan fans,
one that got arrested at a game for running across the field,
jumping into a hot tub.
They have a hot tub in the end zone.
He ran across.
streaking and jumped into the hot tub he knew he was going to get arrested but it was working right
free you know camera phones and all that type of stuff but yes i think montreal is probably we got
they're in a good place man we got to lean on davis alexander like that's a young quarterback like
you mentioned kind of the turning over of the league nathan rourke was that close to being like that would
have been i think pretty cool for the cfell that was warwick and alexander going at it not that
trevor harris isn't a great player but he's been around a long time and well but there's a part of me
that I love the fact that, I mean, although, yes, he is quarterback for the riders,
I love that you see Trevor have the season that he has.
I love that Bo Levi-Mitchell had the season that he had.
These are players that you think that when Cody Fajardo,
when he got put in in Edmonton, what he was able to do with the Elks,
but I love seeing players that people have started to write off and then see that resurgent.
I enjoy seeing it with, you know, to go back to hockey, with tapes.
I mean, regardless.
Anytime I'm at that age now where any time I see someone of a certain age or a certain, you know, a level of experience where I go, man, I'm really pulling for them.
That's amazing when you're able to do it.
It's a real connection. If anyone's even close.
100%.
I remember covering the U.S. Open years ago, and Venus Williams is back in and she and I are the same age.
And I thought, Venus, I am pulling through for no reason other than we are the same age and everyone else is probably 20 years younger.
And now that's, you know.
That's how you put for people.
It's great.
You have to.
100%.
Because there's not, unfortunately, a lot left.
There's not a lot of us left.
There's not a lot of us left.
Agreed.
Sarah Aleski with us.
So what should we be prepared for?
We're here for a couple of days.
What do we need to know?
Break it down for us, Winnipeg,
48 hours gunning it.
I mean, well, you've already got a sense of what the fans are like around here.
You do have to go and experience some of the Grey Cup festivities.
You have to.
You can't be all the way out here and be broadcasting from,
from the Grey Cup, essentially, and then not take it in.
And then tour around, you got to go down to the Forks.
There's a number of places that there's a lot of great places around to be able to check out, food, drink.
Love it.
Do you think Duffy would be a big name around here.
Duffy's huge in Winnipeg.
He has a book signing tomorrow.
Duffy's huge in Winnipeg?
We saw him for lunch.
He big time.
He kind of came over and said, I hey, how are you?
It's like, I got a meeting.
I'll see you guys in a bit.
Like, you could tell, like, in Toronto, he'd be like, can I sit with you guys?
In Winnipeg, we're beneath him.
You know, we're not quite at the Duffy level in Winnipeg.
But he's a man of the people.
He is a man of the people.
He's a man of the people.
He's hosting the great cup.
And he's a beautician.
We love J.D.
Yeah.
And we love seeing you, Sarah.
Thank you so much for coming down.
I appreciate it.
Great job.
Yes, thank you.
You know how much I love being on with you guys.
So the chance to be able to be in person.
What's your favorite episode?
Is it the sombrero one?
You know.
La Bamba?
It's just, I have long claimed, and I will go to my grave saying this,
that there should be a best-of-overdrive compilation that's put together,
because much like the, well, now they're on ESPN,
but the TNT crew, with Ernie and Shaq and Charles,
how they always make me laugh.
And so sometimes when I need that pick-me-up,
I'll just watch some of the clips and go down the rabbit hole.
It's the same thing with you guys and some of the stories,
in the comments yes yes thank you we need to get someone on that do you that's right i'm just
going to make more work for dougie yeah just get dougie work well he doesn't do anything so he's got
a lot of time he's out riding the horse he gets the horse we had tuffy the horse here we had seven
messages during lunch about the horse yeah you guys you want we're trying to get ready for a show
and this guy's texting and then he was so proud about it the horse is arriving at 145 we will meet
you guys can meet the horse no the first one was the horse is going to be in the lobby you guys
going to meet me in the lobby and we're like the horse is going to the lobby huh and then he wrote
don't worry the horse is at boston pizza yeah thanks for setting that up dougie that's how high
maintenance we are we make the horse come to us the horse came and met us we'll be at the boston
pizza you can take the guys out of Toronto that's right that's right there's a corporate vibe
I know it's uncomfortable I know it's uncomfortable all right Sarah Oleskey we love seeing you it's so
great to have you the queen of Winnipeg all right Luke Wilson coming up Luke will join us the nail gun
coming up as well.
Back into the Leaf game tonight, the Jets are Jets, the Winnipeg Jets,
the Winnipeg Jets, the Winnipeg Jets, in Seattle tonight.
We'll get to that as well.
We're live in Winnipeg.
Boston Pizza Overdrive continues.
TSN 1050 and on the TSN out.
I just wanted to give a quick shout-out to Danielle Bain.
Yes.
Yes.
Danielle's the new queen of Winnipeg.
The new reporter in the Winnipeg Bureau.
Yes, in the house back there.
Great to see Danielle.
She said something a little bit weird, though,
At the beginning of the show, when we met her, she said,
I think I'll be more popular than Sarah Orleski within a month.
And I thought that was a little bit crazy.
That was uncalled for.
But I like the confidence.
I do too.
I appreciate the confidence greatly.
It's great to see everyone here.
We're at the Boston Pizza in Winnipeg.
You got your buddy.
You snuck in the guy who you sat with on the flight out here?
Rob, first class, Rob.
I love him.
He's here.
He showed up.
I said, hey, if you're in the peg, if you don't have anything to do, come by,
Boston pizza.
There he is.
Bobby!
Great to see you, brother.
And he showed up.
He's my guy.
Rob or Bob?
Are you called him?
Rob.
Rob, yeah.
Robbie Bobby.
And he's been coming to the Grey Cup for 25 years.
Isn't that right, Robbie?
And he's, yes, 25 years straight.
And this year, email went out, and he said, not a lot of responses.
So he said, Jeff, piss on him.
I'm going myself.
I got buddies in the peg.
And he's here for the Grey Cops.
I love that.
So that would suggest to me, you're a talker guy.
on the plane?
Yeah.
Are you bothering, Rob?
Is that how that happened?
Like, who broke the ice?
Him or you?
I'm not going to lie, there was a weird interaction because Robbie Boy, first class
Rob's in aviation.
Okay.
And I said to him, if you couldn't tell I'm a nervous flyer, and he said, yep, and then
he started to tell me all the bad things that could go on.
I did not appreciate old Robbie telling me about mid-air collisions.
Wow.
At 30,000.
Yes.
Do you need a Ph.D. in aviation to know that?
Yeah, that's not good.
That's not good.
Yes.
I don't think you have to be qualified.
A T-Bone at 30,000 is not good.
Yes.
I'm glad you had him with you to enlighten you on the fact that.
Some other things that could go wrong at 10,000 feet.
And I was like, let's save this for when we get to the Boston pizza.
Okay.
Well, it's great to see you.
Other than that, it was a great time.
He's an aviation expert.
He should be telling you the good.
things like don't worry right it can handle turbulence at everything all these types of things are
run on instruments like the pilot i get it and he said all the instruments are better than ever
safest way to travel i love it first class ravi i love it well did you see the story frankie carato
found it sent it to me last night of the guy who like stole that bus i think it was in hamilton
you know what that guy was doing he stole the bus in hamilton he was collecting the fares from people
He stole the bus.
But he was making stop.
But what he was also doing that was very professional.
He was checking credentials.
And if your bus pass was expired, he kicked you off.
This guy stole the bus.
He's literally Kramer.
He was checking credentials.
And if their pass was expired, he'd be like you've got to go.
The most Canadian thief you never find.
I'm taking the bus, but I'll make the stop.
That is awesome.
Like proper change and everything.
Like whatever you need, get on in.
We're going for a ride.
So how did they find out he stole the bus?
Well, he's probably dressed like Doogie.
Like if you got on the bus and some guy's sitting there in a pair of Rangler jeans and a t-shirt.
Overeals.
Driving the bus around town.
Yeah, some guy in a Ticat's uniform.
You probably think this is a little bit off-putting.
Yeah, exactly.
But, yeah, there's some wild stuff going on in the Hammer, man.
Hamilton's one of our times.
Rick Bushwood, that guy driving the bus.
That's what it is.
What do we think of the hammer out here in the peg?
Are they a rival?
We hate them?
Nah, they're in the east.
They don't care about the tabbies.
They don't care about the tabbies.
I think they just hate the Argos, really.
They hate probably the aloets, too, I would guess,
but you can't root for the rough riders if you're from Winnipeg.
So I guess you kind of got to root for the alouettes on Sunday.
Yeah.
But, all right, we got Luke coming up in less than 10 minutes.
Luke will be here.
He's been awfully quiet.
Like, he usually is running the show on the group chat.
Baker's dozen.
We're up by 13 now.
We're up by 13 on these pathetic losers.
Wow.
These guys are so bad at making picks.
That's why the T-shirt, that's what the T-shirt comes down.
That's why the Millie Vanilly shirts are in the house.
It's been tough sledding, but once I see him and we kind of get together,
we're going to get that mojo back.
Okay.
I look forward to that.
And you guys have the Great Cup pick.
That's a big swing.
That's a big swing.
If Luke and you can hit that pick, that could be a real game changer.
That could be the TSN turning point.
And we are going to rely on the fan base in this room
for their cheers and support who they think is going to win the Grey Cup with the spread,
and we're going to base our decision on that okay that's how desperate you are your pooling opinion
at boston pizza yeah what are to trust these people put out a twitter pull well they don't trust
they hate Saskatchewan so they're going to pick Montreal that's it they're going with Montreal based
on the heart now that you said that we're not doing that you get that the alouettes are getting points
I think they're a three and a half point dog as of right now so there you go you can see it
on tSN 4 all right luke's coming up the nail gun's coming up like this is CFL country Dave
nailer, you talk about Duffy being royalty.
The nail gun runs the show. He was
hosting. He's Schaefter
out here, absolutely. Bigger than that.
So the nail gun's coming up. Back
into the Leafs tonight. The Winnipeg Jets in
Seattle, we will touch on that. We're live at Boston
Pizza Polo Park. Our two
coming up. Overdrive continues. TSN
1050 and on TSN4.
