Hour 2 Overdrive continues, powered by Fanduil.
Leaves in action tonight, Austin Matthews walking in with a Vlady Guerrero Jr. Jersey.
Had to do it.
You have to play to the crowd.
You have to. You have to.
I was expecting Darren Dregor to be doing that himself.
With a Vlady?
Yeah, why can't?
Either.
Which one would be more likely for you?
Vladi.
Yes.
Yeah.
I figure.
Because, look, I'm not afraid now to call myself a fan, right?
If I'm not working in an international event, I'm allowed to be a Canadian fan, a Canadian hockey fan.
Do you want to change your quiz answer when it's who's the face of Toronto sports, Vladie or Austin Matthews?
I mean, I'm more likely to change it now based on what we know, but it was also an in the moment question.
And if you look at the Toronto Sports Place 12 months of the year, I think it could be Austin Matthews.
Now, if Vladdy helps the Js go deep into the World Series?
or better yet win a World Series.
All right.
I'll renege.
All right.
C.J. Chris Johnston with us.
How would you answer that question, C.J.
Austin or Vladdy?
Well, I mean, Vladdy's in the middle of building a statue right now.
So, you know, the conversation is definitely shifted with the performance he's had in this postseason,
signing the big contract that started the year.
You know, I think I might be a prisoner in the moment, but I'm going to go Vladdy.
If you had asked me a year ago, I probably would have been easy for me to go with Matthews.
But, you know, we remember moments like last night.
Of course, it's George Springer, what we're going to remember most about last night.
But that's the stuff that sticks in your mind 30 years down the line when you're a fan.
And so Vladis had a pretty special few weeks here to, I think, cement his place even deep.
DJ, you're a big J-s fan.
Were you in attendance last night?
I peg you as a guy that would have been.
Come on.
Of course he was.
I don't think you can hear us anyway, so we'll see if we can get them back.
Do you follow on Instagram?
What was the question?
I just said, CJ, I pegged you as a guy that would probably be in the building last night.
Were you there?
Oh, man, I was there.
My feet haven't touched the ground since.
I have to be honest, that's the most fun I've had at a sporting event, maybe ever,
because, I mean, I'm lucky to go to all sorts of great things in my job,
but it's not the same when you're in the crowd with the people hugging strangers,
high-fiving, you know, the whole bit.
It was this memorable night, and I don't even know what they can do to top it now, quite honestly.
It was that good.
Well, that's the amazing thing.
They still have the World Series that they're just about to start.
I mean, that's the beauty of it, that it actually is going to get bigger and better.
And as crazy it was last night, if they win the World Series,
it'll take it to an extreme that, you know, not many.
many people can remember back in the early 90s.
Now, Friday night.
Are you traveling?
No, they don't have the budget for that.
Why would they?
No chance.
I don't know. You're a staple of the coverage.
I mean, Hedge and Keegan Hayes.
I agree with that. I'm glad you said that.
I wasn't going to say it out loud, but probably should be in L.A.,
but Hedge will be out there and Kegan will be out there.
I'll be there for games one and two.
And then if it gets to six and seven, I'll be there as well.
Nice.
Yeah, it'll be great.
I don't know why you just don't go.
Take your machine.
You can do overdrive, time change, and,
fire up the games out there.
I hear you, man.
I hear you. That'd be a lot of fun.
There's still lots of time to make it happen.
I'm sure we can make it happen.
We'll put some pressure on the brass.
I think we put some pressure on the brass.
It should happen.
All right, so speaking of pressure, we asked this question before you guys came in.
Who's facing more for the Leafs tonight?
I won't even give you options.
Dregs, you go first.
If you're looking at the Leafs tonight,
which player has the most pressure to perform tonight?
For me, it's Anthony Stollars.
I mean, you know, he doesn't have to pitch a shut out.
Let's give the New Jersey Devil some credit in that.
They're a very good hockey club.
But he came out loaded for Bear post game on Saturday,
and he identified what we could all see as a weakness, right?
You know, Neelander's probably one of the few players in that room
where it just rolls off his back.
You know, when he talked about it on Monday, I think he was sincere.
I don't really care.
You know, I haven't even looked at it.
However, you know, when you're talking about a softness,
in your team and how you play.
Craig Barrowbae wouldn't call the group soft,
but I guarantee you from day one,
that's one of the many things he's preached.
You have got to find a way to get to the opposition net,
and you have to make sure that you protect your own net.
And they haven't been doing either with any level of consistency.
So, yeah, I get the frustration of Anthony Stollars,
but when you're specifically calling out your top score
and then the indictment of the character of your team,
you better be damn solid
Yeah, he better be on it.
What about you, C.J?
Let's take Stolar's out of it.
Or maybe you can go that route if you want,
but is there another player that has been brought into the spotlight,
maybe more than they usually would,
that you think has to have a big night tonight?
Well, I'm implying to say Stolar's,
but I'll say, look, the blue line, I think,
is under a bit of a microscope now.
Brandon Carlo probably specifically given, you know,
his proximity to a couple of those plays that were in Stolars' grill,
but I think, you know, seeing the way that the team rallies around Stolar's will be interesting,
and I look at those players in particular, especially New Jersey, you know, gets in the goalie's face,
or is, you know, they're obviously going to be to try to set up position around his crease.
You know, is that an area where we see a little bit more pushback from the Leafs?
I mean, look, I think ultimately what those comments were is about the team being more competitive
so we can probably go position by position and look at ways we might measure that.
But I think that I'm curious just to see what sort of effort we've seen directly in front of Stolar's around his net, you know, from the guys that have to be there to protect them because there's only so much he can do even as a big a man as he is there in the crease.
Greg, because they're going back to Domi on the top line.
It's not very common for a top player in the league to have a rotating right side and how it's like the fourth or fifth guy, second or third time for Domi.
Like, how do you see this playing out?
Well, you know, you're right. I mean, it's almost in audition form at this phase.
And when Scott Lawton comes back early November, I mean, he might get a look up there on the wing.
I think anything is possible at this point, but it does speak to the need and the work of Brad Trilliving to acquire another top six.
Now, you're not looking for a top line winger because those players aren't available in season.
I think that they believe that Domi is the right answer, but because of the,
the Lawton injury.
You know, they've had to backfill up the middle of the ice as well.
So I don't know if we're making a big deal
at a Cowan being the scratch. I don't think that we should.
This is just part of the management of a young
player, but beyond that, you know, who else?
Have you seen enough from Mattelli to throw him back up there
consistent basis? It's an area of need
and you might go as far as to say an area of weakness
right now.
CJ, where do you stand on that?
well the what you'll say is that domi and matthews have had some good runs together in the past i know
we haven't seen it maybe in this latest iteration the bit they're together in camp you know it's
it's still pretty early but you know i i don't see a more obvious solution right now in front of
them on the roster um you know it's just you know i think this is with with the injury situation
with just with what they have at the deck i mean i suppose that other guy that might be fillet
is yarn croak, but, you know, it doesn't even look like he's in the lineup tonight.
So, I mean, it's not perfect.
I think this is why this season, you know, the Leafs are probably asking a little bit more
of Austin Matthews than we've seen in the past.
You know, he, you know, one thing for all the opinions, we don't have to mention the guy's
name was playing in Vegas now, but, you know, the Leafs never really had questions about that
for a lot of years.
Those two players played together and had tons of success together on the regular season
side of things anyway.
Um, you know, I, I don't know if it's ever going to change until maybe if they're able to make some trade at some point, but even if that happens, I wouldn't expect it to be anytime soon. And so it's probably going to be a rotating door unless Domi can find the fit that everyone's hoping for. And then, you know, that unit takes off, you know, right now. Yeah. And that's certainly not ideal. It's not unpredictable based on Martin or not being here. Do you know what the solution is? Just play Neander there. Like, what is the point of this? Like, if the top line's not good in this.
iteration. What are you
accomplishing? Well, I guess their
argument has always been about balance and then
who does Tavares play with? What are you balancing?
Like if you're... Right. Like, you do that.
Yeah, but you're not getting enough of the top line the way it is.
Like, so what do you accomplish?
So you would suggest loading up Nyes, Matthews,
Neelander, and then let
everyone else figure it out. Yeah.
Their top line hasn't been very good.
And you could say, rightfully so, like they have
two other good players on it.
But Machelli, Domi, like
these are not solutions. This is not...
No, they're not top-line players.
No.
Clearly they're not.
But are they second-line players?
No.
Like, that's another question.
You know what the secret is?
They need two top six-forwards.
They might.
They need two.
And is that reasonable to respect?
No.
Like, how are they going to get two top-six-for-words?
They might not be able to get one.
Well.
Right.
Well, I mean...
We got that going for us.
Yeah, exactly.
And, like, how does that job, Dregs with Keith Pelly saying, hey, you know,
you got that green light, go go get crazy leading up to the trade deadline.
Yeah, look, I mean, we can appreciate what.
what Keith was trying to do.
You know, it's just an acknowledgement that ownership is fully behind Brad Trulliving,
Craig Baroube, and the decisions that they need to make moving forward.
But again, we're retracing our steps here.
It's not like Brad Trilving felt like he needed a board endorsement going into the trade deadline
when he acquired Brandon Carlo and Scott Lotton and gave up a lot for both of those players.
He doesn't have a lot to give up anymore.
So unless you're tearing apart your roster.
And look, the reality is, you know, Vancouver,
in a jam now because of injury. There are teams
around the National Hockey League that are looking
for very specific
needs up front.
25 games into the regular season.
Then teams know what they have
and what they feel like they can part with.
Right now it's just not happening. Well, and
you look at it, you mentioned, you know, Vancouver
and obviously Hedel is now injured and
who knows what's going to happen with him. He's had
head issues throughout his career and, you know,
he took a monster hit from Wilson
the other night. But you got
Edmonton and Ottawa tonight, and
both teams cannot be happy
with the way things are going. Both teams
are struggling. Ottawa's got
Kachukout for an extended period of time
post surgery. McDavid doesn't have a goal.
That's the crazy thing. Like, we
talk so much about McDavid and the
projections, and now he wants to win the
rocket again, and he's going to get this many goals,
this many points. Boisard has lost,
which also impacts
McDavid, right? Yeah, because I said it wasn't
good either. No.
So, like, I guess, CJ, you can start
here. Of that game, Ottawa, Edmonton, who do you have your eyes on and who would you expect
to have a little bit more pep and their staff going into the game tonight?
You know, I'm more inclined to look at the Edmonton side of the ice just to see how they
respond. Obviously, they spent a week in New York City. They snuck out a win against the Rangers
and then lost the other two games they played there. You know, before going back home, I think
they need a win. It's not to say the senators don't need one either. I can see where they
their spot in the standings.
And, you know, the other side of it is Ottawa has given up, you know,
basically the most goals in the league.
So, you know, if you're looking for a spot on the Edmonton side of the ice, you know,
who's going to get going is McDavid find the score sheet, you know,
do we start to feel like the team we're supposed to be?
You know, it's probably decent conditions with the way the senators are started.
They've had a real tough time killing penalties.
Haven't had, you know, great goal-thending performances in the early going.
And so, you know, I think there's a,
there's a little bit more on Edmonton to get their players going.
I think you have to start with McDavid because of all the talk that he was initiating, right?
He was the one talking about winning the rocket and trying to get back to where he's been in the past.
And look, he's got tons of runway still to do it, but this is, you can't get around the fact.
This is the deepest he's gone into any season without a goal yet.
And so, you know, he's feeling that.
It's not just us talking about it.
Yeah, no kidding, man.
And they seemingly do this every year, Edmonton, slow start, and they figure it out.
attitude around the east and just get crushed.
Yeah.
And you'd think at some point they would snap out of that.
And like you're still, you're playing with fire and you look at that division.
Vegas is off to an incredible start.
I don't know who else really scares them.
Like, L.A. is not off to a good start.
Colorado's right up there.
Sure.
But they're in the central, though.
I'm saying like within the division.
You're right.
In the conference, you know, Dallas is going to be Winnipeg's off to a really good start.
But there's a lot of executives, guys.
I would say that kind of hate their hockey.
team off the start. Like we were
talking about who hates their team the most?
Like who would you guys say Drag Zegan's start?
Who's hating their club the most
right now in the National Hockey League?
Oh boy.
Wow.
Yeah, that's loaded.
The Rangers come to mind
just because of the level of expectation.
They got one yesterday.
One early too.
Panarin scored the first ship.
But, you know, then they go out and they bring
in. I still have lots of time for the New
York Rangers from backtracking a little bit, mostly because of Mike Sullivan.
And you've got to give him a bit of time to put his fingerprints on this club.
But they'd be up there.
Can you imagine how Matthew Darch is dealing with Patrick Gua and the New York Islanders
to the early likes here?
That would be a challenge.
And look, we talked about, you know, what isn't happening with Matthews and you look
at, you know, who's playing on the right side.
I like Trent Frederick.
I think he's a nice player.
I liked him when he was healthy in Boston.
Is he a top-line guy?
He's not a top-line player.
He's not a top-line guy.
So Edmondson's probably feeling it as well.
Yeah.
And, CJ, when does Calgary realize?
Yeah, there's another one.
Well, like, they're one and six.
They're getting shelled.
Like shellacked.
Like, shellacked.
At what point, like, last year was a magical year.
They had a great start.
Huska did a great job.
Wolf was phenomenal.
They got the new building in a couple of years.
Like at what point do they realize they have to do some serious, serious, you know,
reworking of their roster?
And at what point does that happen?
And how reasonable is it to move off guys who are, you know, in their 30s and have a lot
of term left on their deals?
Yeah, I mean, it's going to be one of those ones I think is a real interesting one to watch
this season.
My sense of Calgary guys is that they internally have been pretty, I mean, what's the best for it?
I think they've been pretty realistic about what this season could be there.
You know, even the fact that they've had this Rasmus Anderson situation kind of hovered over, you know, September leading into the season.
You know, his camp had shown an interest in potentially, you know, trying to get back to the table if there was an eight-year deal there for him or something like that.
And, you know, they rightfully kind of like, yeah, we're not sure about that.
I think that they wanted to see this season play out.
And so it's not to say that they were expecting to be bad.
But I do think that they kind of understood how much went, you know, went right last year to get them where they were, you know, basically a tiebreaker way from making the playoffs and that it wasn't guaranteed to go right again.
And so I do think there's a bit of a bigger picture plan at place there.
And as a result of that, you know, you're not blowing it up after seven games, but I think that they could be one of the teams if we look for when does the, when does it the sort of trade freeze?
And it's not an official trade freeze in league rules.
but when does it thaw?
Maybe it's a team like Calgary
that could be one of the ones
that's out there, you know,
stirring that up at a certain point
probably wouldn't be before November.
But, you know, I think that they
weren't expecting necessarily internally.
I know the players were talking about
making the playoffs, but I think that
at the management level, they've had pretty
realistic expectations, and obviously
it's been a really tough goal here in the first few weeks.
Yeah. Well, and you got, you know,
like what do you do with Huberto?
There's nothing you can do with Huberto.
Goddrey.
Caddry's a different story.
Like, what would be the market for a guy like Caddrie?
Pretty solid.
I mean, again, with a change to the CBA and whatnot,
more than ever, it's going to be dollar in, dollar out.
So how do you make the pieces fit?
You know, if you're Calgary, if you're trading players like that,
you take a bigger look and a harder bite and just go,
okay, we're going to the wood.
You know, we're going to move Rasmus.
If you're moving cadre, if you can find a taker for you.
I'm with CJ.
I don't feel like it's way too early to.
say they're there yet, but
what they've got going out of the gate
obviously isn't working. That's it. Like one in
six and the roster is the roster.
Yeah. Like it's not as if if this was
Colorado that started this way, you'd
think they'll find a way out of it. Edmonton's done
it before. It's not happening.
Tampa's not exactly lighting it up
right now. Tampa's in a bad place.
Yeah, they are. Dead last in the division right now.
All right. All right, boys.
And getting outplayed, not just losing.
Get no play. That's the thing
that I think is more concerned.
Yeah, not a young team, though, right?
Like, that's the thing.
It's like the Leafs and Florida, Tampa, and Florida and Tampa have actually won.
But those three, Boston's a year ahead of all the other three.
Like, they're over the hump the other way of being like, they had your window, you did your thing, you're an older team, and now you look at the halves.
Like, they keep winning, and they're fiery Detroit's off through a great start.
Like full credit to them.
They look good.
They're fast.
They're playing pretty well.
So we'll see.
All right, boys.
Good seeing you guys. Thanks for doing us.
There's Darren Dregor and Chris Johnston, our TSN Hockey Insiders.

Overdrive continues, brought to you by Fanduo, bringing you more ways to play your game
your way. You think anyone's going to ask Shohay Otani about his free agency when he gets up here?
Oh, for sure.
Someone's going to say how close were you to being a Toronto Blue Jay.
How do you think he'll answer that?
I was on the plane.
I don't think that'll be his answer.
You don't think he'll answer it that way?
Through an interpreter?
I think he'll just keep it clean.
Like, we had some discussions.
It was great talking to them, and that's it.
Didn't work out.
I ended up, I'm happy where I signed.
Yeah, I'd say it's worked out pretty well for Shoah.
It worked out pretty well for the Dodgers.
Is he like landslide MVP in the N.O?
I think so.
Yeah, I think so.
The AL has always been more of a discussion with Raleigh and Judge, and that could break out of the way.
How much of a chance do you guys give the Jays?
Many juries?
Yeah.
40%.
That's pretty good.
Yeah.
I was going to say 30.
Yeah, some are 30.
Dodgers are a favorite.
I mean, you have to be clear on that.
I think big.
I don't think they're big.
Here's why I don't think they're big.
The Js, they have home field advantage,
and they're the best team at home all year.
They love playing at home.
They're very comfortable at home,
and they have home field advantage.
And their bats have found a way to solve
any pitching staff that has been thrown at them.
Now, this staff is absurd.
You're going to face Snell in the, like, Glasnow.
Yamamoto.
Yamamoto.
And they let me go out there for seven or eight.
Yes.
That's the question that I, Miles Straw goes deep off society.
That's the thing.
Like he's their closer now.
Yeah, exactly.
He's unreal.
We need Miles Straw facing off against that guy.
And Ross Atkinson, that's why we went out and got him for that international money.
Because we needed to have Miles Straw.
But yeah, the rotation is absurd.
It's absolutely absurd.
The Dodgers are favored.
They have championship pedigree.
But another thing I would say is I don't think the Js are going to be.
shy or
like wilt under the pressure
of the brightest lights
because of what they did
the Yankees series
that's tough
man you get to the playoffs
they had never won a playoff game
this team
like that's how quickly
that was passed over
losing the two against Tampa in 2020
to Seattle in 22
Minnesota in 23
and then they beat the Yankees
in four games
and dismantle the Yankees
but for them to be that comfortable
that productive
and that prepared against the Yankees,
this is a different test clearly.
But that leads me to believe they'll be comfortable in the moment.
Doesn't mean the win.
It may not be worth anything in the end.
Maybe the Dodgers are just simply too good.
But I don't think they show up and get skittish
or, you know, shy away from the moment.
Especially when they're starting at home, right?
Exactly.
It would be one thing if you had to go to L.A. and games one and two are there.
It's, again, 2, 3, 5.
You just don't want to get your rear end.
It's so bad.
I hate it.
It's baseball, though, right?
Especially with this is why.
Right, because of the travel.
If you got the travel and...
Can I just say, I meant to tell you guys,
there's one tradition I hate in sports.
I don't need to hear from the owners.
Like, I just don't.
Ever.
Nobody cares.
Nobody wants to hear from you.
Skip it.
Football, they do it.
It's the worst.
The Hunt family?
I don't...
Just move on.
Yeah.
Talk to Andy Reeves.
I like it.
They hand out the dough, man.
Get them down there.
well they're going to be down there they're down there you're right it's only the nchel
where they it goes right to the captain as opposed to going to the owner yeah i like that
more clearly every time i'm watching one of those championship things i'm just like i don't just skip
ahead just get me to it is like a gratuitous oh mr hunt uh great job with your but they're
the boss i know like the commissioner makes that call the commissioner i just his boss
is the owners. So that's just
the way it goes. I mean, I'm going to be
first. Yeah. You come to me.
I hear you. It's uncomfortable.
They're never, they're never, like, prepared
for the moment or anything. Nobody wants it.
Like, nobody's... Exactly. Like, no fans
are dying to hear what the owner has to say.
No. About anything at any point.
Yes. Doesn't mean they're against the owner.
Although, did you see what Woody Johnson
said today about Justin Fields?
Hates Justin Fields. And is on
the record. Yes.
How do you win with a quarterback that has a rating that
harsh has. What a comment.
What a comment. And I guess he also said he hugs
Aaron Glenn every week.
Tells him how great of a job he's doing.
That would scare me
if I was Aaron Glenn.
The hug of death. The hug of death.
Yeah, like, what are you hugging me for? Because you know you're going to
can me at the end of the year? We haven't won
one game. We're the laughing stock of sports.
Why are you hugging me?
Woody.
Woody Johnson.
But, yeah, Justin Fields, I don't think he's going to start moving forward.
I got a bad feeling.
I don't think so either.
I think Justin Fields could be in trouble.
But, yeah, the ownership stuff, man, that's the way it goes.
That's the way it goes, Jonas.
I thought it was cool. Vladdy wins the MVP.
And again, we talked about it earlier, like, very comfortable giving quotes.
Yeah.
And he's dropping the mic.
and he's having fun, he's going on Fox, like this is more than we've ever been accustomed to
in terms of hearing and getting to know of Lottie Jr.
He's been here for a decade, never really hear him talk.
Well, he's always had the interpreter, right?
Always does, and he still does, and usually when he's up at the podium, he does.
But I think he's doing a great job with that.
Like, I credit him.
Like, that's a really difficult thing to do.
It's a second language, 50,000 people yelling your name, screaming your name.
And I think he has an understanding.
just keep it short and sweet and get to the gist of it where people will understand it and I can
yes way more important than somebody that babbles with just not saying anything you can
basically say anything well and always say you love the city always that's like when a band
comes to town they're like Toronto and you're like they don't they don't care exactly right
that's of this city it's great glad he is playing it to a tea yeah I think he actually does
yeah I'm born for this I want it for the city we got four
more we only do this for you guys only do it for you guys love your energy it's the best it's the
easiest card to play and it's right there in front of you and everyone is going to love it and
john schneider loves like he'll drop an f-bomb he was dropping an f-bomb last night and people were
going nuts yeah you get a reaction out of an f-bomb that's how much people are happy about the way
things are playing out so um we mentioned it earlier today that austin matthews walked in with a
Vladi Guerrero Jr. Jersey.
And I'm curious to see where the Leafs fall in play on this.
I guess Scotty Barnes was there last night.
The Raptors are preparing for their season opener tomorrow night.
NBA starts tonight.
Bron James not playing for the Lakers.
Old man, sciatica.
He's got the sciatica.
Not good.
That's time to pack it in, man.
Well, it's getting ugly, a little bit ugly for LeBron.
Like, you know, there was that article circulating last night about Russell Wilson
and thinking that he was.
fake and phony, and the way LeBron would say things publicly
was a little bit different than maybe what he was saying privately.
Do you think LeBron cares about what Russ says, though?
I don't. I don't think he should.
Like Russell Westbrook hasn't won anything,
and he's bitter because I think the crux of the problem
was that LeBron kind of wanted Russ out,
but told him that he supported him.
So once it gets personal like that, of course the guy's not going to like you.
If somebody finds out that you're behind the same,
scene saying get this guy out of here and you're going to his face and saying man I'm trying to
I'm trying to work like that is a relationship over yeah seems reasonable that guy might hold a
grudge especially that guy Russ yeah yes I agree um Bradmore shamback in Boston tonight
playing for the first time against the Bruins I think he'll get a fantastic ovation
don't you should he's a champion there captain you know and I I wonder if
if there's some bitterness from the fan base towards the front office for trading him and not
just signing him to a deal.
Of course.
He would have loved, don't you think last year he would have loved to resign there?
He was trying to.
Like, by all accounts, he was doing everything he could, and they just, they concluded it
wasn't the right move.
And it may not be the right move, because they're in transition right.
And he was injured at the time, so it made things that much more awkward.
And the team was a mess last year.
The Bruins were a disaster.
They had an awful season.
This year, they're off to a better start, but I don't think they're going to make the playoffs.
So it may have been in their best interest anyway
to be a little bit cutthroat and say we've got to move you
And they did him a huge service sending him to Florida
Right?
They could have asked for the world
And gone somewhere else
Or possibly he's somewhere else
He dictated that he wasn't he was going to Florida
And that's it
They sent him there and it worked out beautifully
Got himself a ring in a six year contract extension
But I think it'll be pretty electric in Boston tonight
And it should be a guy like that
A guy that's one like that
and a guy that his personality, we're talking about Vladdy right now,
you can't look past what players and legends in certain markets
kind of look like and feel like,
and I'm sure that's the way Bruins feel about Bruins fans feel about Brad Marchand.
Do you guys think if you could go back and ask Marchand,
like what would you rather happen?
What's happened?
Go to Florida, win a cup, six-year contract,
or you could have stayed in Boston.
Dude, I'm telling you, when you get a guy down there at his age,
when you get to put flip-flops on and put sun on your face every day
and win a Stanley Cup and have a lifestyle
and drive a go-kart to practice.
I don't think you can look past winning the cup, too.
Like once you know that, the other stuff's just a bonus.
I get it, but why wouldn't you want more Stanley Cups?
Sure.
Points you can say, how many more do I need?
I'll take them if I can get them.
That'd be great.
But Stanley Cups, I don't think you ever take that for granted.
If you had to vote right now, Hall of Fame or no?
I think he'll get in
If you were voting
Brad Marchand?
Yeah
I think he'll get in
He won't be a first ballot guy
But if you were on the committee
Would you vote for him
First ballot?
How many goals does he have?
He's almost at a thousand points
He's going to hit a thousand points this year
He's won a cup
Played for Canada
Captain of an original six team
Yeah
I think I would
I think his personality
The way that he plays
What about John Tavares
500 points with two different teams
Yeah that's amazing
like Gretzky, Messier, and who was he?
There was a third guy.
I can't remember.
It's the fourth, I believe, fourth player in NHL history with 500 plus points with two different teams.
Who is a better case?
Marchand or Tavares?
Marchand?
Because he won?
Canada's, oh, Tavares.
Tavares had 14.
He won the gold medal.
He got hurt, but still was there.
Marchand only has a world cop in a four nations.
He doesn't have an Olympic Games.
Never been like, I don't think he's finished in top five for Hart.
No, never been up for the heart.
Varus has.
Yep.
tomorrow's first overall pick
world junior stuff
right like
it's probably tovaris
it probably is
close
500 points on two different teams is pretty legit
pretty amazing
yeah captain of two different teams
first overall
again it's like the whole resume
I think it's probably
John Tavares
I think Tavares is going to go
to the Hall of Fame
no question
yeah
I think he will
but there's another guy
like you look
you talked about Machelli and Joshua
on, like, where does John come in to play on having to have a night tonight?
Should be expected.
He got two goals the last game.
He desperately needed those two goals.
Yeah.
Like, he just seems, when he gets in a funk, and he needs his linemates at this point in his career.
This is 17th season.
Yeah, he's been out 17 years, man.
That's amazing.
Yeah, he's not far off, like, this contract will get him to 20 seasons.
He's the new Marlowe, basically.
Yeah.
Like, not quite.
Marlow was 37 I think he's 35 like he's you're a step and a half behind out there and it's like
skating's not your go-to thing to begin with it doesn't look pretty and not a lot of things are
happening he desperately needed those two goals to build something off of man there's some weird
mojo around this team and they're three two and one they're three two and one and pets heads are
falling off it seems yeah well but like we're just reacted to what happened their goaltender like
lit them no I know but it goes back to the goaltender why did you need to do that because
is it made three, two, and one look so much worse than it actually is.
I mean, three, two, and one is, like, against this schedule is not, like...
It's not great, but you don't think Tampa would take three, two, and one?
Yeah, I mean, yeah.
So there's a bunch of teams that are just saying everyone's settled down and we'll figure it out,
but instead they're three, two, and one, and you got the goalie coming out,
making it look like they're 0 and 7.
But you know better than him or I,
what it's like to talk after a game when you're still pissed off?
He was still so mad.
Like, I don't think he filtered himself.
Do you know what I mean?
No, I know.
But the biggest reason why you can't do that is because you single yourself out
as making it look like you're the only one that cares what's going on.
Yeah.
And when it's not going well, everyone is not happy about it.
But you're trying to, it makes it look like you, you're the only guy that cares.
William Nealander shows that he cares in a different way than a lot of other people do.
A hundred percent true.
Yeah.
Everybody cares a different way.
And everybody cares, period, in the NHL.
But when you just come out like that, it's like, oh, you've got to come out and say that
and you act like a hero and act like you're the only one that cares.
And that's why people will get pissed off at it.
How long they'd be pissed off?
I think it's more than just saying,
oh, we talked about it.
It's no big deal.
I really do.
Yeah, I'm not sure I'm buying that.
I'm not sure I'm buying that.
And I look at Matthews at the forefront of this,
more so than Willie.
And even more so than Stolar.
So those Stollars, it's understandable.
He's got to have a night.
Like he gets shelled and pulled tonight.
Then it just, the flames engulf that room.
Like, it just becomes.
a massive story
that you call these guys out,
you go on this rant and then
you play like that. It'll get awkward.
So much pressure on him to play well tonight.
But the captain of the team,
like this guy took a shot at the character,
the DNA of the team.
The captain, for me,
is the guy that would look at that
should probably take the most issue with it.
He was on the ice and overtime as well.
I know he was pointing the thing at Neelander,
but he said, we got guys who have been here a long time.
you know, I think Matthews took some shrapnel there
and Matthews is not exactly a front-of-the-net merchant
and Matthews is not a guy who sees something happen to his teammates
and comes in with his gloves off flying.
That is the other thing about the comments.
You knew the DNA or what the Leafs do.
They talked about a DNA change,
but you knew what the Leafs do on the ice before you got here.
Now you've been here for a year and you watched it
and then you're going to call them out
Like you're somewhat surprised about some perimeter play
and not running over goaltenders and bowling over defensemen.
That's what they do.
Yeah.
The thing is, I think he's probably scared a little bit.
Like, he got taken out of that rink on a stretcher when Bennett hit him.
Like, he was a mess.
Well, and it's happened, like, how many times?
Exactly.
Five times.
Like, he has been hit.
Like, Marchman tattooed him on Saturday night.
That guy was flying.
Six, six, two, fifty.
I understand that.
but, you know, he's, the frustration, I don't know how much of it, like, there were,
but that's what he took shots at different areas.
He went to the office.
100%, which is what makes it somewhat perplexing, like, wow, he went that far.
That's obviously something he's been thinking.
Yeah.
Like, he was giving, he was, he was being honest in the moment.
This is what he sees and this is what he doesn't like.
But I think Stolars, he's really just showing his cards about how scared he is that he's
finally got security.
he's the number one guy.
There's no one else competing with him.
The only thing that can take him out right now
is if he gets hurt.
Yeah.
That's what, because he'll be's not doing it.
Primo's not doing it.
Who knows when wall's going to return?
Nobody just could have done it closed the doors and say, guys.
But you know what I get it.
Enough is enough.
But that's not my point.
My, yes, you're right.
But what I'm saying is that doesn't change him thinking,
like I've waited my whole life
to be the number one guy
and have security.
and I finally got it
and I can't rely on my team
to put me in a position
to hopefully keep holding on to it.
And I'm not even talking about wins and losses
and scoring and shootouts
and overtime plays.
I'm talking simply
the rest of the league is taking liberties with him physically.
Like between Bennett and Marchman,
that's two of his last, what,
four starts, five starts?
It's borderline happened every game he's gone in there
since training came.
Yeah, and that's another thing.
even in training camp he was getting hit and freaking out he's begging his team to snap on his
behalf that's really what he's doing the other stuff he just said i'm going to keep going
and i'm going to bring this up too because it also pisses me off but i think what he what he's
really doing he's begging them to give him a chance to survive the season yeah the other stuff
i don't even think he meant because there were some bang bang goals where guys were left
decide it's not like people were crashing the net
I think it was just pissed off
and just kept going with it
yeah
but
what will you be more curious to see tonight
whether they're at the opposition
net
defending harder around their own net
or like going nuts
if someone I want to see if they're mature enough
not to go out on the ice and cross-check somebody
in front of their net
right and have a five on three early
and be down two goals and be like what are you
like are you stupid everyone knew that was coming
so why are you doing that yeah
That's what I'll be curious to see.
Confirm or deny. There will be a fight tonight in game.
I can't fully confirm that.
Who's going to do it?
I can neither confirm or deny that.
Brandon Carlo.
Here's what he's not in his like...
He fought when he first got here a heavyweight too.
Who did he fight?
Yeah, I remember.
And it was a really good tilt, actually. He held his own.
He's a big guy.
He is, and he's the guy that, like, he's kind of like...
No, you know it is? It's a domy fight night.
Top line.
He has been called out, toughness is.
Feels like a domy fight night.
I don't know who's on the other side.
Like who's in New Jersey that's dying to take that on or what have you
or who's looking for it.
But I'll confirm it too that someone is going to overly respond.
And the reason I say Carlo is that if he's on the ice and Riley gets buried
or someone touches Stolars, he has to.
Like if someone hits Stolars tonight and Carlos on the ice,
what is his alternative option?
There is none.
Like, unfortunately.
Buffalo did this a couple years ago.
I know, which makes it so stupid that you put yourself in this position where you're being compared to Buffalo.
Not Florida, not Tampa.
You're being compared to Buffalo.
I remember Lindy Ruff coming out saying we didn't respond properly.
That will never happen again.
Imagine being in the NHL and somebody telling you you're not responding properly and it's a change in the future.
Well, the original one was...
That's happened here, no?
It happened with Marchand and Lilligran two years ago.
Yeah, Keith.
We didn't like our response.
That'll never happen again.
And the next game, Mark Giordano got in a fight.
I remember it was Giordano.
He flew into the corner.
Someone got hit.
I was there.
I was in the building for it.
And that was the guy.
40 years old, Mark Giardano was like,
someone's going.
Someone's going.
Like, at least, I confirm it 100%.
What's the prop on that?
I don't know who he's fighting in Jersey's lineup.
They'll find somebody.
There's guys that will go.
go if they have to.
And it's not even about New Jersey looking for it.
It's that they're going to be
sucked into it.
I'm just glad he didn't go backtrack on what he said.
Because we've heard that so many times here
where it's like someone says something.
It's like, ah, didn't mean it that way.
I agree.
Let's, I don't know.
Let's be honest.
And I hope that's a sign of a new era here
that you don't have to backpedal.
If you want to, you can.
But I got the impression in the past
that was kind of forced upon these guys.
Like, please go out there.
Like, the Sheldon Keith one is fitting.
He's here tonight.
The king of the back pedal.
And I don't believe he wanted to do that every time.
Best players weren't that good next day.
I didn't mean that.
I meant to all the guys.
Exactly.
That screamed.
Everyone come together.
We need to shift the narrative.
Let's get out there and pretend that didn't happen.
And I think that may have changed now.
I hope it did because you're right.
Stollars didn't backpedal.
So we'll see.
See what comes with it tonight.
All right, that came on TSN4 this evening.

And I'm wondering if the Blue Jays are still partying,
like what time do you turn the tables on that,
turn the page on it and reset
and realize you're going to the World Series here.
Over under 5 a.m. for when most of them were home.
I'd say a lot of it's over.
And even if you're home, over means later?
Yeah, I guess so.
Okay.
Yeah.
I'd go later than that.
that for the majority of the team, and I think
even guys that would have gotten home at
one, two, three in the morning, I don't know how you
fall asleep after that. If you're George
Springer, how do you fall asleep
after hitting a home run like that?
Like, how? How could you possibly just
calm yourself and shut the mill down? He's not
that far from like the most postseason home runs
ever. Except the third.
Now, as you pointed out in the past, like
the games are different, but
I think it's like a 162
game pace in the playoffs is 48 home runs.
Does that make sense to you?
Pretty good. That's pretty good. Pretty damn good.
This year he had what, 32 or 33
and it was a borderline career
year for him. Yeah.
So he exceeds
all the metrics from the regular season.
That's what makes him so clutch. Yeah. He's
4 and 0 in game 7s.
As a Blue Jay and as a
Houston Astro. MVP
of the World Series in 17.
and you know we got hurt in game five
and they were cheering that
and everyone in Seattle was loving the fact that Springer was down
for him to be the one
to come back and effectively
knock them out for the season
very fitting but must have stung man
like I did not shed one tear for the Yankees
happy to see Vladian and everyone
just dancing on their grave
Yankees have won enough
they're the Yankees
You either love them or hate them.
I don't have a feeling whatsoever for Seattle.
I'd obviously prefer the Jays win,
prefer the Jays end up in the World Series.
That's what's happened.
But when you look at the Seattle Mariners history,
they haven't won anything.
And for them to be that close,
like to have the heartbreak be going the other way
is very rare.
Yeah.
Very rare.
Well, and it was looking so good for them.
Like they're up.
Up 3-1 in game 7.
Building was dead.
Team seemed kind of out of it.
Nine outs.
He needed nine more outs.
Now the J's in game five needed six more outs.
And we saw what happened there.
But you're right.
Yeah, if you're in Seattle, like I'm sure when they're up 3-1,
you were cautiously optimistic,
but there's no chance any sports fan with that history.
Oh, it was a done deal.
Yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
Just a history of losing effectively.
There's no way you could have.
been that comfortable. And the same thing
if the shoe was on the other foot. If the Jays were up
3-1 all game, but 3-1 going into the 7,
no one would have believed this would just
be a breeze. Even after Springer hit his home
run, I thought
there's going to be more action here.
And I credit Bassett and credit Hoffman
because there wasn't.
I think the bullpen allowed one hit.
Just the homer. Yeah, Varland got hit.
Varland. That's it. There you go.
But they, I didn't like
them walking, Raleigh. I don't know how you felt
at the time in the 7th. I thought it was the right play.
Because that guy, he had a home run early in the game.
He's Cal Raleigh.
I know, but.
You know, Gossman, you put him in an uncomfortable position anyway, Gossman on the mound.
But you're just creating a rally.
And they almost get out of it.
Yeah.
They got out of it.
It worked out.
Yep.
They got out of it.
It all worked out in the end.
Everything's worked out for the Blue Jays.
It's great.
You got to give them their flowers.
Top the bottom, the whole organization.
They're in the World Series.
And, you know, what this means for the legacy of all these.
these guys and everyone affiliated with the organization,
it's still untold because they still got games to play.
But for Springer's legacy, it's probably a good thing too, right?
Like, he always was going to have, like, the Bregman has this,
some of the Altuvae.
For sure.
Correa.
Correa.
Now you do it somewhere else.
Big.
Maybe win.
Big.
Very big.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's big for George, for sure.
And Vladian, you know, you can go down the list.
There are just so many incredible stories.
came out of that, a seven-game series, and it broke their way.
Game one of the World Series Friday night.
