This hour of overdrive is powered by Fanduil.
Fan Duel, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score.
All right, here we go, Overdrive, off and running.
TSN 1050 on the TSN app, your home smart speaker, up on TSN4, up on YouTube live,
Brian Haseo, Doug Jeff O'Neill, Jonas Siegel in here.
Man, those Sends fans had it going last night.
What a night for them.
They had to win the game.
You mentioned it yesterday?
Like there was going to be some hard feelings, some chance, and it was like this, everybody pulled it off.
You have to win the game.
Yes.
Like it's the main ingredient.
You can't be chanting and, you know, throwing things on the ice when you're getting pumped in the third period.
Like people would have just gone home.
And they had to win the game.
And that's where I give so much credit to the players because Brady scored quick.
Yeah, and then as the other players, like you've got to be thinking if you're on the bench,
oh, this guy's going to come back now and torch us every time and we're going to get smoked by Florida.
And this guy looks like a genius for leaving.
Yep.
And then it completely reversed and they beat up on Florida last night.
So main ingredient, if you're in Vancouver on Sunday when Quinn Hughes comes back,
you get into a time machine when Marchenko went back to Columbus or when Marner came back last year.
Because at least lost that game.
You think Quinn Hughes is going to get the same?
Nowhere close to it.
I don't think it'll be even close.
Just because it was done kind of quietly and quickly and there was no...
Yeah, no trade protection, right?
He couldn't dictate where he was going to go.
It wasn't nearly as politicized.
It was before the Olympics.
So it didn't have the U.S. angle to it.
And people didn't blame him.
I didn't feel like for it, did they?
Well, also because the team is so bad now, right?
And that's why I don't think it will be as crazy,
because I think Canuck fans are more self-aware that, hey, even if he stayed, he wasn't going to sign.
They're the worst team in the league, arguably.
So it was going to be a very difficult pitch.
But I would say if I was a fan and had a ticket to that game and I watched the game last night,
I would want that type of atmosphere.
You know, I would be anticipating that it's going to be loud, crazy, a great ticket.
Just a quick note, if you want to be a real deal, like, band base,
you can bring something similar
like every night like that.
You are allowed to do that.
Like you're allowed to do that.
You're allowed to just hate on the best player
on the other team for no particular reason.
Like Yankee fans, they just start getting up
and cheering every, they come up with a chant.
It's okay to do that.
And I know fans are going to say it costs a lot
and sometimes there's no excitement.
But you're allowed to go nuts
and just be known as a great fan base.
Yeah.
It doesn't have to be a special occasion.
I think the problem is,
although it goes against your comments about baseball.
You see it more in soccer.
You see it in football.
There's too many games.
You know, like in football, if you're an NFL fan,
you're going to eight games a year.
Yeah, and you're getting loaded, and it's an event.
Exactly.
And you're like, I'm all in for the next eight hours.
I'm going to go tailgate and drink,
and I'm going in there with a jersey on.
I'm going nuts.
Win, lose, or draw.
Difficult to get up off the mat,
41 times or 42 times
now in the NHL. Which crowd was
like most hostile for you when you played?
Like I'm trying to think of all the buildings that I've been to
which is the most hostile and like New York
comes to mind maybe a little bit.
If you ever get a chance
to get to Manhattan
and go to a New York Rangers game, it's one of the best
environment. It's so cool. Yeah, it's one of the best
environments in the NHL. They've got a great goal song.
Bands are passionate. They're fired up.
They're lively. It's a great time.
It's a great time. Every game I've
been to, it's the same energy every game.
I respect to that the fans
came up with like clever chance.
Like those are pretty good.
They're mean. You eat crayons.
That's quality
stuff. Right. And listen,
Brady was trying to embrace it.
And during the video
tribute, he was laughing.
And at the end of the game, he was doing
what Brady always does, right?
Let's get crazy and rough and all that.
And I think his teammates were like, we've seen this a million
times. Go ahead.
throw your glove, do your thing, the game's over, see you later.
That's why I wouldn't have liked the dinner thing
because Batherson and whoever else is out for dinner
and Pinto and Cousins got to eat his gloves
and take punches in the head
and that would kind of piss me off where it's,
oh, you're not going to get involved in stuff like that?
You had to go to dinner and we got to deal with this other nonsense?
Right. Well, exactly. I mean, they're cousins.
I don't know if Dillon Cousins was out for dinner with him,
but Pinto and him were close
and Pinto got into it with him last night.
Ridley, Greg again, was his teammate.
Like, Brady's going to do that
and realize he's probably tougher than anyone on that team.
But that's the Kichuk way to, we're losing.
We're going to try to take a piece of you.
I get it.
But ultimately, again, Ottawa got the last laugh.
Like this week, Marchenko got the last laugh.
Now the Ottawa Senators got the last laugh.
We'll see what happens throughout the rest of his career.
and if he's going to be in Florida down there
for the rest of his career, he's going to go back to Ottawa
twice a year for the next decade.
What's it like game two,
game five, game ten on the return,
I'm not sure, but
that's what it should have been last night.
A lot of fun. He left
the hole in the bag, man. He dumped
you. He wanted out. He demanded out.
He determined where
he was going to go. He held
it against the organization. After
playing, what was me forever? People
keep asking me, why do I want to leave?
never said anything and clearly why that is the main reason i believe that the fans were so pissed
off because i believe he had a child at the end of the season he went back home for that and then
he came back and said i don't know why so many people are questioning me about wanting out of here
that's not the case and then he was traded very soon after yeah so like they had just mixed
feelings where it's like why did you have to do that i believe that's one of the biggest reasons
they were pissed on 100% because i remember hearing that press
conference and we came on the air and I said that doesn't look or sound great from my standpoint.
And I remember thinking, that's a weird kind of disposition he had a little bit of a weird
approach and attitude to everything. Like from my standpoint, I was like, that sounds like a guy
disconnecting. That was my read on it. And again, people went nuts on that. Like, how dare you?
He took a count. He said he doesn't want to go anywhere. So you would feel burned, right? You would,
you would feel burned and even listening to him last night, say, you know, he cherishes his time and
they'll never forget it. It's like, it just, it can't add up if you demand out.
But what? You could have walked as a free agent two years.
What are you supposed to say? Yeah, I'm not really sure if I like it here anymore.
Well, I guess you can. I mean, he played like that, right? Laughing, punching, hit and got,
like he wasn't, he didn't have a soft spot for the Ottawa senators last night.
Yeah. And he's going to get it anyway. He might as well. If he really wants to buy into the
villain role, that's what he probably should do.
it would be unprecedented.
I don't recall anyone ever doing that.
I'm not suggesting I'm expecting it to happen,
but wouldn't it add a completely different element
if last night before the game he goes,
just to be clear,
I hate this place.
Like I could not stand being here.
Yeah, he gave a little bit of a Jack Eichol after the game,
and he was like, well, really, were the fans that ferocious?
I know.
You want to hear that?
Remember Jack Eichael?
He was like, oh, it took him seven years.
Right, exactly.
Here's Brady could chuck after the game,
on the fans' reaction in Ottawa.
Brady's a crime was pretty ruthless with you at times.
Is it what you're expecting?
It was the worst?
Was it not as bad?
What did you think about the atmosphere?
Were they ruthless?
No, it was good.
It shows a passion that they have.
No, no, one chapter closed.
And like I said, just this,
no exciting new chapter that we're living in.
So it was nice to be in front of those passion fans.
Okay.
Hey, he handled it.
Like, he handled it like you would expect you would.
There's only so many ways to answer the question.
Totally.
Like I want it out of here and I'm out and I'll kind of give them their props and I'm out of here.
Yeah, exactly.
And the Ketooks know how to talk.
They know how to compose themselves.
They're broadcasters.
Exactly.
And, you know, they're larger than life guys.
And he knew what was coming and he knows what likely will continue to come, you know, moving into the future.
But a big win for Ottawa last night.
Leaves Rangers tonight.
The Rangers probably the surprise team in the NHL.
this year. I thought they were going to be so bad, so bad, because they were horrendous last year.
And they got some spark, they got some energy. And we've been dumping on Chris Drury for a couple
years, deservedly so for some of the transactions. But you got to give them some props for the players
he's brought in and they look pretty good. Yeah. Especially dealing with that injury. A lot of times when
the gold tender goes down and you throw somebody else in there a relatively unknown dude, you have
big time problems.
And I don't know what this Garan can do for them
or how long it can last,
but they've been pretty good.
They've got one of the top records in the league.
I mean, its state percentage, I think, is like 927 or something.
I've always thought Mike Sullivan was like
somewhat underrated
during his time in Pittsburgh.
Like obviously they won.
But like you would see some of those teams
and like there was Sid and everything,
but it's like you look at that team.
You're like, how are they like competitive?
And I wonder like after last year and just how bad it was,
they add parts on D,
teams a little better,
I don't know, Panarin's gone,
I don't know.
Yeah, well, Lafran year has been outstanding.
Right.
And they've been waiting for that for a long time.
He got drafted.
Well, he had kind of a breakout year with Lavi was there,
and then the next year I thought he was going to take off flying and he didn't.
It was a step back, but he's back and he's playing good.
Yeah, he's playing well.
Like Dorofiev, who they picked up hasn't actually done a ton yet.
And they paid him a lot.
They paid him over $11 million.
They got him from Vegas.
So, you know, I'm not convinced that this holds on.
I do think at some point the Schisturkin injury is going to burn them
because they're getting better goaltending statistically.
Chesterkin was a 927.
This guy's a 929, say, percentage.
Like, he's been outstanding for them.
So maybe it is a Jim Carrey story.
It comes out of nowhere, replaces the injured Chesterkin,
and has a great year and patches everything together.
that has happened before, but it's very small sample size right now.
That happens in football sometimes where the starting quarterback goes out, and it's like,
who's this guy?
Yeah.
And then they win a couple games, and then it's like, actually, he's not that good anymore.
Isn't Brock Purdy the best example of that?
Yeah, but he was good.
He held on.
Maybe he's purdy.
But there are guys that go both ways.
Yeah, but there was a couple guys they moved away from and looked like they had that
young kid that they drafted high.
Trey Lance.
And then they had Garoppolo.
And then this guy just showed up, and he was incredible.
Yeah, exactly.
I mean, that would be a great story.
Shisterkin's got a long-term contract that big money.
When he returns from health, he's going to play.
But, yeah, it would be a very cool story.
And obviously, if you're a Ranger fan, that's what you're hoping for,
that they remain competitive.
But I think if you're a Leaf fan, you're waiting for the bubble to burst a little bit.
And Sergey Bobroski stayed at home, right?
He's primed and ready to go tonight.
You guys okay with that, or you're a little like, eh?
I don't care because.
because Stolars didn't get hurt. I think it's fine.
Yeah. If you know, if you have smart, like,
if anything. If you have confidence, your starter
is going to get, like, Linus Allmark left the game
last night. Three-one.
But even if he got hurt, like, what's the, I don't know.
I said yesterday, Jonas,
you could stay home. And there's
an old school part of me
that thinks the 82
game schedule, 84 now,
is a, it's just a part of the deal.
It's a part of being an NHL player.
Like, I've been griping about load
management. I'm like, you get paid.
you get paid for 82 games,
and I understand that's completely different this year.
Like, Kauai is going to play,
we talked about,
what is he going to play,
55 games this year or something like that?
It's just,
why doesn't your paycheck reflect that?
But,
like,
let me just finish.
You're on to it now.
You're,
for Vobrowski,
I believe in the big leagues.
If you want to stay home and you get to,
you're not going to take the flights,
and it's for your rest and for you to play better,
you better be good.
Because if you're good,
people are going to say,
we don't care what you do.
And I always used to believe that.
I had teammates that like going out before the games.
They had guys like to do all kinds of different stuff.
But if you show up and play, nobody cares.
Nobody cares what you do.
It's so true.
Remember, this is like way back.
Remember Roger Clemens when he came back with Houston?
And he didn't travel with the team.
I think he would just like fly in for his starts.
And he was awesome.
But he wasn't like around the team.
I think he was like raising his kids.
And he would just like shuttle in like this freelance employee.
make his start and get the hell out.
You got to be amazing to do that.
That's a great extreme, isn't it?
If Bobrovsky is really good tonight, you'll be like,
yeah, maybe he was 10% more rested and it paid off.
And I think, again, you've got to remember,
this is not about just one isolated game.
This is about a full-season plan,
about getting him to the finish line fresh, right?
Yes, it's about being fresh tonight,
but their plan, I'm sure is, if we can knock off 10-flops,
10 bad sleeps,
give this guy the opportunity to come in
and get treatment at home with our guys
that that's going to help him in March
when they're really grinding
in April when they're really grinding.
I had an appreciation for all of that now that I'm
50 years old and looking back
in my career and it's just
a lot of it is a mental grind
like pro sports you said
like you don't sleep that much. Like after a game
you have five coffees before the game
and you're all jacked up and then all of a sudden it's
11 o'clock at night and you're walking out, like, you don't sleep.
I just appreciate the grind.
And you've got to get up and you've got to practice.
And every practice is big.
Every game is big.
And you've got to figure out how to be good every night.
Yeah.
It's a part of the grind, man.
Well, I mean, look at opening day.
Another example.
Oh, man.
Gavin McKenna doesn't take the skate and doesn't play well.
And it's like, hey, if you don't take the skate and he goes out and rips home three,
people like, I don't care if you take the skate ever again.
No one cares what you do.
Nobody cares.
Like, it's just when you kind of.
go about it a little bit differently. This is
sports science, but that could have been
too. That could have been them saying you're 18,
you're still figuring life out. I don't know.
But ultimately, if you get the job done, no one really cares.
And Bob is coming
off the best start as a Maple Leaf. The first start
he's had as a Maple Leaf where he has not given up
three plus goals. And
the Rangers are off to a very good start.
So Jake McCabe's plan,
his face is mangled.
Man, he took that stick right off the
it looks
playoff like
like playoff
type of behavior
look at that that's that's
Craig Barube from last year almost
like Baroube had two and about 50
zippers over his forehead
that looks exactly like my eye
I was the least in the playoffs just about to say
it's very similar to yours
yours was worse I think
wow it was
it was way worse
yeah because he like the visor
would have helped him
I'm surprised the doc didn't say you're firing on a
bubble.
I guess not.
I guess, I mean, as long as they don't have any concerns
for what else is going to happen, right?
Like if you keep playing and it's not going to be a problem.
But they're healthy and Bob going tonight.
So let's see what they got.
The game on TSN4,
Kauai last night, apparently in the fourth quarter,
was saying, get me back in there because I got to hit a certain amount of minutes
that I want to play to rev up.
It was the opposite of load management.
Because they were up 40 plus basically the whole game.
That was such a terrible game.
The Bulls should be ashamed of themselves.
Are you even a real team?
That was such a pathetic performance.
The Raptors were great and they came out and just shot the lights out and
quickly was great early.
And you don't even have a read on what the Raptors are you.
It's coming because they got some tough competition coming up.
I was going to ask you, can they shoot the lights out?
Like, are they good enough at shooting to do that consistently?
Or was that a combination of a one-off home opener in Chicago's brutal?
I think.
Isn't that one of the question marks about this team?
Yes.
And a part of it is can quickly stay healthy because quickly can't hit a shot.
Kauai is more than capable, clearly.
And he was great from the line.
He wasn't great from the field last night.
Got to the line a ton last night.
But, yeah, they're shooting and their perimeter shooting in particular.
That's going to have to continue to improve.
If you want to chase a championship in the NBA, you've got to shoot threes.
Like you just have to.
We know that the last 20 years of NBA basketball, it is proven.
you have to shoot the lights out.
But it was a cool, cool experience with Kauai in town last night.
And it got to a point where they were up 40 and they put them back in
because he said I have to get my legs going.
Reverse sports science.
Reverse load management.
I like it.
I have an appreciation for that, though.
Let me try to get fired up a little bit here.
Yeah.
That's how pathetic the Bulls are.
He literally, it was like he was at the YMCA.
It's like, I have to go out there and run around and sweat.
Like, I have to get my feet moving.
and my legs moving.
But do you have to commit to something
or on a nightlight tonight?
Like, let's say that was a back-to-back situation.
And they're blowing a team out,
and there's just no chance.
If you sit them down for the fourth,
doesn't that give you the option to say,
I know you plan on not playing the next game,
but maybe you can now?
It's a good question.
Or do you got to commit to it?
Or do you got to commit to it?
Because that would be enticing for a coach to say,
look, man, this is a blowout.
Either way, losing or winning.
Don't play the second half, but the next game we had you not playing,
maybe you can kind of get in there.
I would guess it doesn't work that way.
I would guess it's like corking a bottle of wine.
Whether you have one glass of the whole thing, you're paying for it.
Like it's done.
It's been corked.
It's the same thing with Kauai.
Kauai because it's a buildup, right?
Like you know what it's like with older guys too.
Like it's a full day kind of, when am I getting there,
you know, getting ready for the game, getting prepared.
It's not just the actual minutes in the performance.
So I would think in bigger moments, you would like to believe that,
hey, we get a back-to-back late in the season.
We're fighting for home court.
We blew this team out, or we got blown out and you barely played.
Let's save you for tomorrow.
Speaking of wine, I don't know if this is true.
Somebody told me they saw you at a birthday party,
gooning wine out of a bottle.
Not true.
Not even the glass.
I swear.
I know who told you that.
No, it's somebody you wouldn't think.
But I was told right out of the bottle, gooning it down.
Not what happened.
Not what happened.
Or this is as bad.
This is a Matt Cause move.
You just had the glass of wine and the bottle in the other hand.
I never.
I had it.
But here's what happened.
And I know the guy that probably told you about it, who probably paid the bill, is probably
listening right now.
It was a big party and we were going to a different room and there were a bunch of people
that were drinking wine.
So the bartender wasn't me.
Said, well, if you guys are all going, you want to take the bottle with you.
And I was like, well, I don't know.
then I stopped short because I'm like, this isn't a good idea.
Like, this is not good. This is not something we should be promoting.
And then the host saw it and goes, what the hell do you think you're doing?
I'll take that, poured it for me, sent it back, and we move on with our night.
But it was not a scenario where it was happening.
You were not drinking out of the bottle.
Not one time that I take a sip out of the bottle.
I never even used the bottle.
They never got to that point.
But it was suggested because, you know, there's a bunch of people over there that
eventually we'll come back and say, do you have more of that red?
Hey, why don't you take it, save yourself a walk?
But that's a dangerous game when you've got an open tap.
I'll tell you what, you start gooning a bottle right from the bottle.
That is a quick way for your wife to give you the tap on the shoulder.
Yes, 100%.
That was not ever going to happen.
But I think the bigger concern was other people saying,
oh, we can just get a whole bottle.
I guess we'll do that.
And then all of a sudden the night takes a serious turn.
Well, the guy that was having the party, he paid for the table.
tab for the whole thing?
More or less.
Which was dangerous
again when there's bottles being
ended out. And that's why
it came to an end very quickly.
I think I know who told you.
I got a good idea.
You'll tell me in the break. But
false and not true.
Never happened. Never would happen.
Too classy.
All right. Who do we have? Dregs coming up today.
Luke coming up. We got a good Thursday night or
tonight. Bears, Patriots.
Big, big game for both teams.
Bears were the three-point favorite at home tonight.
You guys are on the clock.
You better start cooking.
I got a guy in Malthus somewhere, not even checking in.
Sunning himself.
Does he not send him like little carrier pigeons?
I have not heard from him one time and over a week.
Ever since the wedding, I've not heard one peep from Al's brother.
I'm riding solo, which is dangerous for him because I'm on fire.
Is there ever a scenario if you continue to be on fire
where you send him a note saying,
your input is not needed.
Don't come back.
I don't anticipate that happening.
I don't foresee that happening.
He's my guy.
I love Alice Brother.
We're partners.
We've won before.
Once you ride with a champion,
you stay with a champion.
So yeah,
Alice Brothers is going to be a big part of this moving forward.
So more on that,
just after 5 o'clock with Luke in studio
and the Lease Rangers tonight on TSN4.
So Dreg's coming in as well.
Overdrive,
continues TSN 1050 and on TSN4.
Just outrageous comments from our producer, Doogie, on the commercial break.
He's a Cologne freak, and he claims he does research on what brand that he should fire up.
The guy's in his 20s.
Hasn't had a girlfriend forever.
All you should Google if your Doogie is, what cologne do girls like?
Am I wrong with that?
What research are you possibly doing, Doogie?
Yeah.
Like, what do you look up?
Like popularity.
What does that have to do with anything, though?
That's massive.
Like, how many people are wearing it at one time?
But isn't that bad?
Like, why do you want to smell like every other guy?
You don't.
And like...
You got to be original, dude.
Like the different scent notes that a cologne offers?
Dude, you're like a small man.
Really, doogie?
What do you know about scent notes that a cologne off?
You don't even know what scent note means.
I'm being serious.
No, you're not being seen.
You don't know what scent note means.
Trust me.
What is the scent note?
The different smells.
Okay, then just say different smells.
That's a set note.
He's right.
I trust Doogie over you when it comes to Cologne.
Like he actually does have a lot of different colognes.
You're not helping, Jonas, because you're actually promoting it.
I thought he smelled good.
You smell great, dude.
It smells fine, but it's unnecessary that much Cologne all the time.
You shouldn't smell a guy from down a hallway.
That means it's too much.
But I would think there isn't too much research other than does this smell good.
Like what else could possibly go into it?
I don't understand.
Isn't research you have to go and smell it?
Yeah, exactly.
You're wearing it.
Do you do that?
Doogie doesn't know what the hell is going on.
I do.
All the time.
Let me get this straight.
You will go and smell colognes without ever having an intention of buying it that day.
It's simply a research.
day. Definitely. So you wake up on a Saturday morning and you're not going to hit balls. You're just
saying, I'm going to go on a Cologne side question. No, it's not like it's not like it's the number one
location, but it's it's part of the part of the walk. It's narrow. Like you're going to go to
see Cologne. Yeah. Like it's a must. Sent notes. He's seeking out sent notes. Come on in,
Dregs. No, but Dugie, I just want to know with the amount of Cologne you dump on yourself,
when you're trying to experiment with other things, what are you looking to get out of it?
Oh, boy.
He wants to smell good.
So many. It's smell good.
Essentially what John just said.
Great.
Okay.
Smell good.
Done.
End of discussion.
I love it.
I support it.
I'm sure you do too, right, Dreggs?
You're a fan of Dugie and the Cologne?
This idiot.
He's doing the Brucey Garriac.
Gregs.
Let me explain myself.
I watched it.
Yeah.
And I have great instincts for broadcasting.
Pretty solid.
And I know when a guy's going to chime in.
And Bruce, it was like he was going to pick up and say, oh, dog, the tickets are gone.
And he was, and he stalled a bit.
And I was like, is he going to go?
And then I stalled.
I think Brucey jammed me up.
Maybe.
But do you do any digging?
Because you remember Colonna last year from the Memorial Cup.
And you're trying to do the show.
And I did the show a segment from Colonna.
When you're on remote like that, sometimes it's a bit different, especially for the guy on remote, right?
Where you think you heard the question correctly, but you're waiting a little bit.
You don't have the return feed and all of that.
I mean...
That's a kind way of saying he jammed up, Brucey Gary.
It did...
It's a nice way of saying you completely jammed them.
You didn't necessarily leave them hanging, but you did stop abruptly.
What are you talking about?
You're the host.
You've got to pick up on that.
He did.
Eventually, I did.
A little bit late.
A little bit late.
Admittedly late, because I could tell, Bruce was, he would have stood there.
And then I got Ronald when he goes, I think I lost you.
Yeah, that didn't help.
But that was code for, I don't know what's going on here.
Exactly.
Because that's what you're talking about.
Yes.
We've all done those.
You're solo somewhere and you're like, I don't know what the hell is going on.
People aren't talking to me.
There's no one here that can help me.
So if we freeze and we go quiet,
That is a very lonely place to be if you're on the other side of it.
So totally understandable where Bruce Garriac is coming from.
It does seem, this kind of stuff does seem to happen around overdraw of a fair bit.
Not that specifically, but I think you should start pulling it off from time to time,
just to kind of throw these guys off.
Just have a little pause.
Yeah.
See what happens?
Good idea.
No, no.
What was it, the smoke alarm in my house?
You remember that a few years back?
That was great.
You know, Holly's burning the chicken wings and her.
alarms going off. So loud.
Brian had that. I don't think I've ever laughed.
I was exploding. Then Pierre LeBron,
remember he had the noise?
Oh, the chair malfunction. Yeah.
Is that what that was? Allegedly, yes.
That was a good 10 years ago now.
That was a wild.
That was a wild one.
You can find all these.
He claims that was a wooden chair on a wooden floor.
No chance.
No, he breathed ass on overdraft.
No chance.
All right, we got a lot of news.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Injury news. Nick Suzuki, the Ironman himself, never missed a game.
No. Two to four weeks. In Montreal's not, they don't feel great about the way things are going right now.
No. It's a big hit. It is a big hit. You know, he's a terrific hockey player for starters.
They've played okay of late. You know, there's always areas of want and concern.
I haven't defended leads in their last couple, which, yeah, that's a bit problematic.
And Suzuki is so well-rounded. You know, we're speculating.
on the video evidence that was collected
that, you know, it appears to be a hand
issue based on blocking that shot.
So what will be interesting, and I think we're talking about it
to some degree tonight on insider trading,
is whether or not
Kent Hughes feels compelled
or urged to try and be a little bit more proactive
if he can in acquiring another piece, right?
And automatically your brain drifts over to Dylan Larkin
and the Detroit Red Wings. Well, okay, but if Dylan Larkin,
and was going to waive is no trade
to go to the Montreal Canadians.
Doesn't it feel like he and his family would have done that
by now?
So it's not
an extended enough injury where you have to
do it because you feel you absolutely
need to backfill,
but if
a couple of three weeks turns in a longer
than that, then maybe the urgency does
elevate. Gregs, it's a big day
in Winnipeg on Sunday.
Yeah.
And
Friday,
what is the suspension for Helibuck lift?
Do you think this guy would even want to, like, do you think he shows up on Friday if he's not dealt today or tomorrow?
I don't.
What he wants that mess?
I know the Winnipeg Jets and the players wouldn't want that distraction with such a big day and a great event for the city and the franchise.
Yeah.
How do you think the next 48 hours plays out in Winnipe?
I mean, it's an incredible public relations spicy meatball to try and chew on.
it, isn't it? I mean, there's
no question that Kevin
It's like a drunk uncle showing up at Thanksgiving.
It's like, what do you do with this guy?
Yeah. I mean,
the theory that makes most sense to me
is, okay, the deadline is imposed
and we know that that suspension
lifts tomorrow being Friday.
You know, if you're Winnipeg, do you just go,
okay, well,
he's back on the payroll, but
we're going to pay him to stay away,
at least for
a while. I mean, he would love that.
Wouldn't he?
Like, if you're kind of Alibug, you're like, awesome.
Yeah.
Great, I get to have my KK and eat it.
I get paid now and I get to stay at home.
He wants to play, though, right?
Sure, but he doesn't want to play that battle or he'd go back to Winnipeg and play.
But they don't really want to play for.
He wants to play for somebody to watch him play and say, we got to get this guy.
But can I ask you guys, like, Drags, how long can they wait?
Like, wouldn't they wait?
I mean, can they wait until December?
Do they wait until March?
No, to trade him.
Oh.
When do they just have to say, we got to do something?
Yeah.
We can't have this.
It's fair, but if they had a workable offer, then it would have been done by.
Not a home run.
I'm not saying a home run, but a workable offer.
And I mean, I can give you, for instance, you know, like if we're looking at the Carolina scenario right now, right?
And I do, I believe that Carolina is one of those teams that has remained fairly consistent with their level of interest.
But it probably includes Neketian.
It doesn't have a contract, by the way.
So what does that look like?
million dollars. I've heard the same. Oh, I've heard the same. Do you have the
stomach if you're Winnipeg? And if you do, it feels like that deal probably would be done
regardless of what the other pieces are. Is it one of their goalies? Is it a draft pick?
All of that. And it is still relatively early in the season. The Buffalo rumors won't go away.
You know, could Buffalo find a new location for UPL and then they swing a side deal?
Assuming Winnipeg is good with Stu Skinner and Clayson, right now we think they are,
because it's early in the years.
So I understand what you're saying.
There has to be at some point, a tipping point in all of this, right?
They just don't feel that it's right now.
But to go back to the Heritage Classic, I can tell you without question, nothing matters more.
Well, there are two things that Mark Chipman, you know, one of the principal owners of the Winnipeg Jets cares about most.
Three things.
The team in general, winning, and then making a city look great.
Well, the Heritage Classic is going to do that,
but is it going to be as effective if you have that dark cloud hovering over throughout the course of the weekend?
So it would be better if there's even a, hey, maybe a deal happens tonight?
Maybe.
I doubt it.
I don't get that sense.
But is there a way of addressing it maybe as early as tomorrow and saying, look, backburner until next week we'll keep you posted?
I don't know.
You want to find out.
I wonder if Buffalo's start and UPL's taking a lot of heat in that market,
like that's got to help the potential of a trade, isn't it?
Like if Hala Buc is willing to go there, is that's kind of what you're waiting for.
A team that had high hopes, who's not off to the greatest starts,
UPL in that market is not necessarily revered.
There's a lot of people turning on him.
Like that is kind of what we always discussed, right?
Like if a trade was going to transpire, it's because a team's,
off to a poor start and their goalie isn't playing that great.
Yeah.
So shouldn't that he'd be on Yarmou?
That's what I'm saying.
That's what I'm suggesting.
It's not on Kevin Shevold Day off to call him and say, hey, do you know your goalie isn't
that good and you guys are off to a bad start?
Yeah.
But I guess that's what I'm pointing to is that the market pressure in Buffalo that maybe
Yarmal Keck Alignan does not adhere to.
And most GMs don't or shouldn't listen to the media or listen to the fan base.
But there's got to be some pressure there from an owner who said we finally got to the
playoffs last year.
We got to do it again.
Yeah, I agreed.
And we don't have the same team that we had a year ago.
Yeah.
Right?
We don't.
So if you can improve this club in one area and, you know, provide the goaltending of a future Hall of Famer in Connor Hallibuck, you got to do whatever you can do to do that.
And it's not like this is a bidding war where shovel day off is collecting all these great offers and saying, okay, well, here's what Team X is offering.
You have to do better than that.
It's not that.
It's not that.
So there's opportunity here for sure for Yarmal, no doubt.
So Larkin now expands his list, which I think looks embarrassing.
It's been that way for a bit, but you're right.
It's the teams that became public.
Yeah.
Is there another potential if this keeps going where he gives another five teams?
Or how, where does this end?
I mean, I think that potential has to be there.
You know, maybe not in the moment.
But, you know, look, I know the Montreal Canadians, or sorry, the Detroit Red Wings are scouting.
the Montreal Canadians on a day in and day out basis,
paying close attention.
Well, Dylan Larkin has not lifted the no-fly zone to Montreal,
as we talked about earlier.
Is there even a remote chance that he's willing to do that?
As we're having this conversation, doesn't sound like it,
but, you know, and I saw, I can't remember Jimmy Demelano
what podcast he was on, but I did listen to his comments,
and I heard him speak publicly on the matter.
That they kiss and made up? I don't think that's the case.
Yeah, not entirely, but most definitely.
I think that they've tried to encourage Larkin and others.
Okay, well, let's buy in.
But in the meantime, we're going to continue to pursue trade
because that's what the Larkin camp wants.
So in answer to your question, five teams is a lot.
I think he could expand by a couple.
I mean, when you look at that list,
those are all very good teams for the most part, right?
And it's almost like when, you know, past teams.
Yeah, and Connor Hellebuck, to go back to him for a moment,
you can expand your list and say, well, I'll go to X number of American-based teams.
But a lot of those teams already have top-end goaltending,
not elite-level goaltending, but good goal-tending.
So it's almost like they're on a no-trade list anyway.
So it makes it difficult.
Least Rangers tonight, all of this turnover in Toronto,
You know, how much of this success and the ability for them to make these moves or the reason they made those moves were focused on and the belief that Austin Matthews would return to form because he has.
He looks amazing, which makes Roslavik look good.
The Marchanko deal look good.
Like everything's coming together up front anyway because the big guy's back.
Yeah.
How much of it?
Yeah.
I mean, that had to be a big part of their plan, right?
Like, if we're going to go all in and keep doing this, you better be.
great. I mean, Jerry's percentage would be
really high. Yeah. But why wouldn't you?
Yeah. I mean, it's no different than Stan
Molman and the Edmonton
Oilers. You know, I mean, when you've got
players like that where you can see the contract
is quickly expiring, and
you look at what Brady Kachuk did to get out
of Ottawa and what we're seeing from
Connor Hullabuck, these clubs, including
the Maple Leafs, know that the window
is closing. So
why wouldn't you do everything they
can? It's interesting to me.
It is. You know, sure,
he, you know, he being John Chike could put his fingerprints all over the forward changes.
Didn't do much to that defensive core.
And what's interesting is he used one of his main chips in Matthew Nise to get another forward.
And I can tell you, remember Keith Pelley kind of let it slip with the prospect of the Montreal Canadians?
Like, I mean, not kind of.
Yeah, he didn't he.
He literally said the prospects, yeah.
Yeah.
And I'm telling you that as Clove says Toronto and Montreal got with Brad Trilliving as general manager,
it really was for two defensemen.
So it was from a prospect defenseman from the Montreal Canadiens.
And then a collection of assets that Trilving was confident, at least I'm told,
that he would be able to parlay those pieces into another defenseman for the Leafs.
So you're talking about 2D that would make this blue line look much different depending on who this?
the other defenseman was.
But I'm not being critical of John Chikin that approach, right?
They felt like there was way more work that needed to get done up front
as opposed to what they have on the blue line.
They can do what they do and we really have no saying it.
But if that Easton Cowan somehow leaves this organization,
I'd be devastated, like not devastated, but I think it's incredibly stupid.
Don't even give me that stupid grin you make because I know that means you're pushing
them out, Jonas?
You're running them out of town.
I'm not getting rid of that kid.
I love what the kid does on a daily person.
What if, I mean, look, I saw your sound like, sorry, I wasn't listening to the show when you torched the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Darren, if you want to go out and play like a bunch of losers, we're going to call you a bunch of losers.
Play better, and we'll give you all the props in the world.
But if you go out there and play like a bunch of story-ass losers, that's what we're going to call you.
It wasn't unfair. Don't get me wrong.
But basically what you said is they're players that are going to want out, or, you know,
one out now. That was
part of your message and all that.
They show that by the way
they play. They're skating around.
Yeah.
What are you laughing at?
I don't know where he's going here.
What I'm saying is
I don't know that to be true, but I mean, you've been in rooms like this
and I, so I respect your opinion
on that, and I want to take it to the next level.
We had a field day with all the
Zach Werenski stuff on July 1st.
We had an absolute field day.
You can't rule everything. You think, you think,
Columbus is going to call up John Chichen say if you give us Easton Cowan.
I mean, what if they did?
I don't know.
And look, I mean, Judd Maldaver has become a very influential.
He represents Austin.
He and Matthews.
Yeah. And.
Big David.
Well, go down the list.
Roman Yosey's got quite a few.
I'm just saying that we're having a super team next year?
No, no.
But let's, but let's, I'm going to get so radio on this and Josh is going to text.
He wouldn't do that.
Most work alone and don't touch your phone or else you'll be something.
And if there's a headline that says,
and if there's a headline that says,
never.
Stuff in a garbage can.
Well, that's still, buddy.
Fair warning.
Like, I'm looking at Nashville, right?
And Chris McFarland, he looks at the bones of this team,
and it's not his team.
It's not.
I've heard Nick Hague's name is out there.
Yeah, I mean, he's in year two of a four-year deal.
It doesn't necessarily move the needle, I don't think.
I love Nicky Hay.
I love this guy.
What about Roryl?
But what about Yossi?
Not for Cowan.
He's like, he's...
How old is he?
I'm just saying, but if you're having that Werenstki-Yose type of conversation,
how do you get into those negotiations if you're John Chica without including...
I think those are two different...
No, no, I agree.
But yeah, I agree.
I'm just...
Yeah.
No, listen, you got to pay...
to play. I get it.
But I love
Colin, though. His game is tremendous.
That would be a tough. I agree. And I was
thinking about it last night because Quinn Hughes is
returning. And that was the
template now. That has been set. Yeah.
They got, you know, Zeb Bume
is not off to a great start, but they've invested.
He's going to be good. They believe he's going to be really good.
Really good prospect. Rossi
good player. He had a 60-point
year one time. I think he's a middle-six guy.
The other player that got probably a middle-six
forward, right? Off to a pretty good start.
So they got three lottery tickets with one player in particular,
who they think could be a really good player.
And then a first round pick.
Like they paid a premium, but they didn't pay crazy.
Not at all.
And Quinn Hughes.
Second best defenseman in the league.
Exactly.
And Worensky is right there with him.
He just won the norms.
But Worenski, I believe, is trade protections.
So can also manipulate a little bit.
But Easton-Cowen right now is worth, I would say,
as much as whatever Bume.
was worth at the trade deadline last
year. Like he, based on what he's
already established, Jonas.
Sure. Like maybe because Bume's a defenseman
and he has the upside, maybe he's
slightly ahead. But
it's not much more.
You know, it's picks and other prospects.
But it's not much more. Do you think the rest of the league
looks at Easton, the way that
you do? Yeah. No, and again,
I'm not saying that
Cowan is, I'm not saying he's on touch.
What I'm pointing at the Hughes deal
was not that
crazy what they gave up. It was fair for both. Sure. But it was prospects
in futures, in lottery tickets that maybe work, maybe don't for a guy
that you know is one of the two or three best defensemen in the league. All I know is when you
talk, you turn the TV on and the Boston Bruins are playing, you have to turn it off
because Prazer Mint is so good. Yeah.
It's hard-breaking to watch. That was a stupid trade because they got
Brandon Carlo for him. This is Zach Werensky. I mean, it's very
different if you're getting Werenski.
You know, Carlo was a depth guy that was here to play with Morgan Riley.
and Minton at the time we didn't know exactly what he was.
I just love Cowan and I don't want to see him go anywhere.
Okay.
I'm with you on that.
I don't want to see him go anywhere.
No.
I love him as a leave.
I think he keeps grown as a player.
I think he's tenacious.
I think he's got, you know, tools that they need on this team.
I don't think they have any interest in Toronto or trade either.
I don't think they do.
But you do as a general manager have to put yourself in the what if.
I mean, if you're going to improve the team, you've got to give something up.
And we're not just talking about improving your team here.
If you add a piece like
Well, Rorensky's the game changer, clearly.
But beyond that, you're
you're not considering
a trade of that magnitude involving
that player. But it's also, you know, to pump
the tires of Easton Cowan, is he as
good today if he doesn't go through the experience
of winning the Calder Cup?
I know you're going to say of last season, which was not.
No. He made a great Calder Cup in the year
before he won the Memorial Cup. He just looks
different to me. He looks like he knows
what he needs to do. He's a winner and a leader.
I agree with it.
All right, Trex. We'll catch you on a panel.
tonight. Doogie, you be careful, man.
Darren Triggie. I swear,
garbage can time. No, Nick Hague.
Maybe we should worry in the garbage.
You're freshen it up a little bit. That actually
could balance everything out a little bit because he
smells great. It's like a scented bag.
By the ankles, too. Everything comes together. He's just Dunkin' Doogie.
I love it. All right. Luke Wilson coming up in 15.
Overdrive continues up on YouTube live.
We were just talking on commercial break about, you know, the Cowan stuff.
And I guess the biggest picture element to this is
are you really a real deal team where you're looking to get that defenseman?
Like are you a top five team in the league?
What do you think?
The answer is probably no.
Let me ask you that. What do you think?
Are you going to move out a young kid?
And it was the same as Fraser Minton.
I guess it was different because we talked about that scenario.
They were first in the Atlantic.
They were having a year.
And they decided to kind of make an attempt at going all in.
But is that really the move right now to go for what?
Let me ask you, how high would you rank them in the league right now?
Are they the 15th best team, 12th?
I was just going to say middle of the pack team.
So like hypothetically you add Werenstki to become the 10th best team, the 12th?
So does that warrant move?
I don't know. That's what I wonder.
Good question.
Like does that, if you're 15th, just to say you've got a defenseman, for what reason?
I mean, you're always trying to improve your team.
Yeah.
I mean, listen, they have a long history.
First and foremost of not winning.
It's been 60 years.
They've been kicking tires and trying different things.
things, but they have a long history of moving off guys and being way too hyperactive.
Now, again, I don't know if they've ever had a defenseman like Zach Werenski.
Probably not since Boreal Salman.
No, they haven't.
Like, that's the thing.
Like, if you're talking about him, and this is purely hypothetical, he literally won the
Norris last year.
He is a phenomenal hockey player.
So he plays half the game.
Yeah.
Like, he is different.
And an exception to the rule of what we're generally talking about.
here. But the idea of, like, there's this constant need for like, okay, this guy's got to go.
They need this piece. They need that piece. It's just this engine that keeps going.
And, you know.
It's Joe from the bridge stuff.
Yeah. And it's like, all right, what else can they do? And I like watching Calum play. I love
them as a leaf. I want them to be a leaf for a long, long time. Like the Cadrew was the
same thing. Okay, not working. We got tomorrow. So we got Austin. We need a defenseman.
Nas, you're out. It's like, what are we doing? Like, what are you thinking here? And that was a
horrible trait.
Nas, you're out for Kerfoot and Barry.
Because they need something else.
