Starting point is 00:00:05 Hello, everybody and welcome back to the P-1 podcast with Matt and Tommy. Tommy giving it another wave, so audio listeners, he waved at you. And we're back. It's race week. It's Austria week. And Tommy, are you ready for a different winner this weekend? Yeah, we've got a sprint. I'm sure it's going to absolutely complete lottery, mix up the order,
Starting point is 00:00:30 having the first half of Maxisdapen win on the Saturday. and then we'll see it on Sunday. No, no, no, no, no. I'm not having any of this this weekend. It's going to be, it's one of those where it's like, oh, Austria. Oh, it's basically Max's home race. But it's not. It's not going to go well.
Starting point is 00:00:47 It's going to be someone else winning. It's going to be crazy. So I'm giving you a little teaser as to what my predictions are going to be. Now, before we dive into it, let's talk about our five-star review. And if you want yours to be read out, please leave it. Let's know why. We read every single one of them. So thank you so much for submitting them.
Starting point is 00:01:03 This one comes in from. Billy X Jacobs in the Australia. You've written down there, Tommy. The Australia. Thank you so much. And they say, this podcast is seriously one of the best, let alone easily, the best F1 podcast. I've been listening to Matt and Tommy for years,
Starting point is 00:01:18 and whenever I'm feeling down, I put them on and instantly feel better, apart from when Tommy introduces the podcast saying that Max Fisdappen's going to dominate. I love their layout, formula, and their opposing views. That doesn't happen. On various topics, really sets them apart from the rest.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Their will knowledge is second to none, and the two of them are so knowledgeable. Well, thank you. A combination of informative F1 news, race reviews, and hypothetical scenarios makes this podcast so enjoyable. I hope P1 never ends and I know I'll be listening, watching for eternity. Keep up all the amazing content and know your efforts are keeping newbies and oldies up to date across all topics. Thank you so much, Billy. That was a hefty review, but one with which I feel really good now.
Starting point is 00:01:53 So thank you, Billy. Right, let's get into our predictions now, shall we? And let's start with biggest good surprise. I have gone. for Charlecler Say it in the same way every time
Starting point is 00:02:12 Exactly I've gone for Charles Leclair Just purely because I don't think he's actually going to win But we're on the We're on the hype from Canada
Starting point is 00:02:25 Where the drivers told Ferrari No when they tried to do a bad strategy And they went And we're staying out And I feel like Back on the podium could be seen as a good surprise these days for Ferrari. So yes, and of course, this time last year, he won at Austria,
Starting point is 00:02:41 the last race win for Ferrari or anyone, apart from, of course, Mercedes and Brazil since then. So, yep, Charler, here we go. Big Boy podium on its way. He's not got a podium yet, Ferrari, which is wild to think about, actually. So, yeah, it would be a good surprise. They haven't up there. Ferrari haven't got a podium this year. Charlotte Claire finished third in Azerbaijan.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Did he? Don't you dare. Get off that. I was like, I'm pretty sure I'm not completely and utterly insane. I was like, I'm pretty sure I've seen Charles on the podium. I was like, I was like, doing Baku. Right. Wow.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Interesting you've gone for Charlerc, because my biggest surprise, I have gone for Carlos Sites. I knew that was coming. I knew that was coming. Yeah, maybe it is the Ferrari hype train. They've, you know, got their butts in order now, and they're like, look, we're deciding the strategy. They're butts in order.
Starting point is 00:03:32 just make an Episcallum. They're butts in order. They're ducks in order. They're butts in order. What's that, Tommy? I don't know. It's my new phrase. Ducks.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Is it ducks? Yes. I've never heard that. Well, you just think they line up with their arces out? Like, what's going on? You know, like, yeah. Okay. So brilliant.
Starting point is 00:04:03 We'll go with butts in order, but I'm pretty sure it's ducks. Anyway, you were saying. Carlos Sainz, biggest good surprise. I feel like... No, we're not editing that out of the video. Don't try and roll that off like the editor's going to get rid of that. That's staying in the video and the podcast. Tell us why signs?
Starting point is 00:04:17 Because I feel like he's just been... He's been... He still has his moments, but he's really getting there. And he's... I feel like this could be the one. So come on, Carlos. Okay, cool. Good luck to the Ferrari boys can't wait.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Get your butt in order for Carlos. I can't wait for neither of them to be in the points. So yeah, okay, brilliant. We got our butts in order. As we go to, biggest flop. Okay, I have gone for Esteban Ocon. He was very washed when he re-signed. It wasn't last year.
Starting point is 00:04:53 It was a year before, wasn't it? He was very washed in Austria, I feel like. Yeah, he had an absolute nightmare. Stinker. So that kind of like, it just resonates in my brain a little bit. And he's been on a very good. consistent form. And I feel like there's going to be a stinker.
Starting point is 00:05:06 And I think the last time I gave him biggest flop, he had the biggest stinker of his life and got equal most amount of penalties ever in Australia, wasn't it? So sorry Ockon, but I feel like another one's coming. Honey, you got another, was it, a big storm coming? Yeah, we're going for all the phrases in this one. I actually just searched for butts in order just to make sure that it wasn't a phrase.
Starting point is 00:05:30 And it's not, because the first thing that comes up There's nine non-boring butt exercises if you're out here still doing squat. So, no, it's not a phrase. I apologize. Right. Biggest flop I have gone for Nico Holcomburg. And yeah, I just see maybe this is the race where, because this seems to happen a lot at Hasse, one halfs will do really well, one has to do terrible. So maybe KMAG does a bit better this time and Hulk Kazamaer.
Starting point is 00:06:01 and he needs to be beaten by Magnuson for this to happen really, doesn't it? Because we can't say that biggest flop is being in a half and finishing 15th because they always do. He has to be comprehensively beaten by his team, mate, I would say, yeah. Interesting. Okay, poor Nico, off the back of an amazing qualifying last time out and then flopping in the race. You're now like, no, full flop. Although, to be fair, well done you for not going for a team for once. And you've actually learned that going for an individual is much easier to score points.
Starting point is 00:06:30 Okay, we now go to pole position Why don't you go first Tommy Hit me with the pole I'm going to surprise everyone You said that before Right off the rails Pole position I have gone for
Starting point is 00:06:52 Max for Stappan You boring boring man I am I need to get some points I need to come back You say that every time The only points you score are Max Verstappen on pole and Max winning.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Exactly. It's disgraceful. Max Verstapp and Pole is my banker lap, basically. Yeah, it's funny because you look to the weather and, you know, it looks like it's going to rain again. It feels like every time we record this on like a Tuesday or Wednesday, we look at the weather and it says it's raining the whole weekend. And everyone goes, oh, this will mix up. And then Microsofts up and wins by 40 seconds because he's, like really good in the wet still and we all just forget.
Starting point is 00:07:36 So I'm going for match for this happen. Brilliant. Okay. Can't wait to top this up at the end of the year. We're like, oh, Tommy, you won the prediction championship just by scoring two points every week. And it was the same too.
Starting point is 00:07:46 I have gone for Fernando Alonzo because I'm not boring. I never would have guessed. There is going to be a Fernando wet pole at some. I don't know. I feel like I say these phrases normally, but I'm so attuned to it in this particular. Matt.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Get your butt in order. Okay. So, Fernando's going to get pole. Because he's the goat in the wet. He is genuinely just being very, very good. I feel as though he would have got a lot closer in Canada had he had that extra lap that Max kind of sort of snuck in at the end there. So yes, Fernando's going to get pole because I'm not boring.
Starting point is 00:08:32 And when it does come in, I'm going to cash double points for not being boring. Yeah. I think that is a rule now. If you don't pick Maxis to happen as, win or the polls or whatever you get double points. If it, yeah, I'm, I'm happy with that. Perfect. All right.
Starting point is 00:08:48 We now move to sprint pole position, which we probably should have done first, considering sprint poll happens before. No, it doesn't. No, Friday's real poll. And then Saturday's sprint poll. So we're fine. It's been a while. It's been a while since, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:02 So we're adding sprint pole now because there is actually another qualifying session, which is just, it doesn't sit right with me this whole format, to be honest with you. But we are still going with it. My sprint pole position person is Fernando Alonso. You just try and mind me. Yes, I did. Because look, now that double points are on the cards, let's have a Fernando Alonzo absolute,
Starting point is 00:09:25 just everywhere. Fernando, come on. Interesting. So I promise there will be some difference later on, but I have gone. For the banker one point, I've gone for Max O'Suffin for Sprint Shootout. I could have sworn you used up all your tokens for Max Verstappen last time out
Starting point is 00:09:47 No, I think that's the rule now that you get double points if you take a risk Okay, all right, fine So yeah, no more explanation needed than you go to Max Verstappen again Well, the explanation needed is that You're a boring person One, I'm boring and want the points Two, he's absolutely dominating Three, even if it's wet, he's really good in the wet
Starting point is 00:10:08 And always gets pole position in the wet and four, if it's dry, that circuit really suits Red Bull even more than normal. So I'm just, yeah, I am being boring, but I can't literally like I do sometimes predict other things when I feel it might happen, but this one I just can't see it. And then hopefully that means I'm jinxing it. Yeah, I can see it clearly. I can see Fernando Alonzo double pole position lockout. We now move to Sprint winner.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Tommy, have you been boring? No. Kind of. No. Sprint winner, I have gone for Sergio Perez. I think I can see this being, you know, maybe qualify a second, gets Max off the line. And Max goes, go on, Sergio, you can have this one because it's just the first half of the race. And yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:07 So, Joe won the sprint in Baku. Maybe a bit of a return to form for Paris for a bit. I was going to say, so you feel as though Checo is going to be unwashed this weekend. He's going to be back. Rain. Yeah. Okay, interesting, because I think I'm not going to go with that.
Starting point is 00:11:25 My sprint winner is Fernando Alonso because it's a short race. And if he does get pole, he will defend like a lion. And he'll get his elbows out and he'll win the sprint. And then we'll all be going, oh, if only if it was actually a real win. Yeah, I was literally thinking that. It's won, but it's not a real win. Oh, you know, do we count this? Oh, 33, yada, yada, yada.
Starting point is 00:11:48 Oh, no, it didn't happen. But back to your Perez point, I don't see it because he's not got the confidence at the moment. Austria is a short track, which means there is going to be less of a differential in qualifying, especially. So if he is off the pace by a few tents, that could see a lot of cars slotting into that sort of area of P2 to P2. five or so. So we'll see. We shall. Yeah, it's interesting.
Starting point is 00:12:15 You mentioned that about Alonso because that is the first thing I thought. As soon as you said, Sprint winner Fernando Alonso, that is the first thing that came to my mind of like, wouldn't that actually be weirdly annoying? Even though, it would. And I'm actually... I'm not sure you'll be annoyed, though, as you're windmilling around your allowance because... I wouldn't be annoyed. But I think once it's like died down and then Max probably wins that...
Starting point is 00:12:40 You were listening. No, you blocked me and we weren't listening. No, I was speaking and I completely missed what you said. I said, I'm sure you won't be annoyed as you're windmilling around your lounge that Fernando Alonzoz won. Yes, after his wet pole. Oh, this is off the rails. Yeah, it is off the rails.
Starting point is 00:13:00 But yeah, with Fernando, it would just be so, so annoying. And I'm not one of these people that goes, oh, the sprint takes away from the main race. And I think it could work if they do something a bit different, but that would take away from it because it would be that whole like, oh my God, yes, we've seen Fernando win. Oh, wait, it's not actually a win. And it would be cool, but yeah, it would be a little bit annoying at the same time.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Okay. Let's see how annoyed you actually are when Fernando Alonzo wins the race and we do a podcast about it. You'd be like, it's the greatest day ever. Okay, let's go to our top three. in third place do we do third or first I forgot on it's been a while
Starting point is 00:13:46 it is third all right in third place I have gone for charlaclair because I have to because I predict because I predicted the thing is
Starting point is 00:13:58 I actually put Hamilton and I was like wait hold on I just said Charlotte Claire's going to be biggest good surprise so I have to put him on the podium so we'll go Charlotte Claire P3 yeah I never know with this
Starting point is 00:14:07 whether I meant to like basically like double down and if I go biggest surprise all you head to your bets and hope you like yeah that's true actually I will judge either way I'm going to go for
Starting point is 00:14:20 P3 Carlos Sines for exactly the same reason as you I said if you'd be biggest good surprise so I feel like a podium needs to happen and I feel like this could be the race
Starting point is 00:14:32 for Carlos okay good stuff second I've gone for Fernando Alonzo because there's no way he's going to beat back for Stapham over the course of a full race. Spoiler alert. P2, I've gone for Sergio Perez.
Starting point is 00:14:52 I've returned to the podium after a while, I think. It's been at least three races because he's missed, hasn't he missed Q3? Yeah, it must be maybe Miami. That's not good. Let me triple check that. So where did we just go? Canada he definitely wasn't.
Starting point is 00:15:11 Spain he definitely wasn't. Monaco he definitely wasn't. Miami he was. Yeah, very good stuff. Well done, Tommy. Good insight. I remembered something. Okay, we now go to first place.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Max Verstappen. No comment needed. He will win the race. But he will not win anything else in my predictions. P1, I have gone for Max Verstappen. At least I'll get one point this week. because, you know, I haven't bit him in anything else. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:15:42 Yeah, it'd be a tough one to beat Max here, but as we always say, he's got to not win one time. It's going to happen at some point, isn't it? 60 years later. Yeah. P1 with Matt and Tommy in 2016. We're like, Max will step and can't win this race, surely.
Starting point is 00:16:02 And you'll be like, oh, you've predicted to Max again. You're so boring. You've predicted him a thousand and a thousand and races. 100 races in a row. Yeah. Yeah, the only way he's not going to win is when he hangs up his boots and doesn't race anymore by the looks of things. Anyway, no, please continue watching Formula One and consuming P1 content. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Finally, one crazy prediction. I have gone for Alex Albon Q3. After saying that Williams maybe aren't going to be as good around Austria, I was like, well, that usually means it's going to be the opposite. So Alex Albin, Q3, I feel like he got Q3 last time, last year. Let me, let me, let me just, let me check that whilst Tommy tells me, here's one crazy prediction. I love how we've, we've had this wonderful review about our quality wheel knowledge, and then we've just been Googling constant things during this podcast. So my one crazy prediction is, I think this is genius.
Starting point is 00:16:58 This is Matt Gallagher levels of loophole, hopefully. No, he was 12th. Sorry. He was 12. Oh, okay. So, yeah, I guess you can have it as a bold prediction then if he didn't do it last year. I'll allow it. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Thanks, to him. Hopefully you'll allow this one because it's a proper Matt Gallagher loophole. I have gone for someone else leads a lap other than Max Lestappen. And look, it hasn't happened since the start of May, and we're now at the end of June. So this is a bold prediction. I'm absolutely taking it. What, even with pit stops? Yeah, well, it hasn't happened for nearly two months now.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Has it not? No, it hasn't. No one's let, no, since Max took the lead in Miami on lap 48 when he passed Perez or whenever it was. Okay. No one has led a single lap, even in the races where Max pits. And I saw that loophole and I'm absolutely going for it. Yeah, well done. You know, I hope you're really happy with the money, Jane.
Starting point is 00:18:00 I really do. Well done, Tommy. You know, I hope that makes you happy. Disgraceful. but fair play. It might happen. It might not. I hope it doesn't happen.
Starting point is 00:18:08 I hope now we get a Max Verstappen masterclass by a lap just so that your loophole doesn't come true. But then do I? Because then it means everything else is terrible. I get some points. My competitive spirit is kind of willing this to happen now. But let's see. Right.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Good stuff. Tommy, that is all we have time for. What is your final thoughts, please? My final thoughts are, please be good sprint race. But if it's not, I feel like we'll have had enough now to decide that it's not working and just reverse the grid, you bottle jobs. I love how that turned to like speaking to the FIA directly in Formula One.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Like, hey, stop with that. Yeah. Okay, good stuff. Yeah, I hope that the sprint race is good. But I hope it doesn't just do the thing it did in Baku, which was, here is what's going to happen tomorrow. But you'll have to wait till tomorrow to watch it. unfold and there won't be anything different apart from LeCleur getting wrecked.
Starting point is 00:19:11 You know what I mean? It was a literal spoiler. Yeah, it's such a rubbish format and I'm going to, I'm sorry, but it just is. I don't like it. I was a bit, yeah, I was pro sprint at the start. Like, this is way better than a practice session, but after seeing it for a, you know, a couple of years now,
Starting point is 00:19:30 if you're going to do something different, do it properly, not kind of, you know, How is exciting just seeing the first 20% of an F1 race when nothing happens? It's like doing something different, but always taking what the top teams want as like gospel. Yeah, 100%. It's like, oh, we'll do something fun, but not to really disadvantage the top teams too much because otherwise they'll get angry. Yeah, this is crazy. You get to watch Red Bull win twice in a weekend.
Starting point is 00:20:00 Oh, dear. Well, we'll see. Again, we will revisit this when Fernando Alonzo wins. the sprint as to whether or not you love the format now. No, I'm not going to say that. I will be windmilling. Right, that's it. We're going to cut it off there before YouTube,
Starting point is 00:20:17 de-monitize us or we get our podcast taken off Spotify or whatever. Anyway, thank you so much, everybody. We'll see you very soon for another piece of content. Loss of love. Bye! Bye! Don't do it. No, I can see your face. You're about to say something inappropriate. No, I'm not. I'm going to apologize for my mom and dad who listened to this podcast.
Starting point is 00:20:36 Oh, God, I'm so sorry. He won't be windmilling, I promise. is a Stack production and part of the ACAST creator network.
