Starting point is 00:00:05 Hello everybody and welcome back to the P-1 podcast with Matt and Tommy. And today we are looking ahead to the Canadian Grand Prix, Montreal. One of the best circuits in the world, in my opinion, Tommy. I do love a race at the circuit de Jules Ville Neuve. I do. I don't know if I've got old-school bias, though, because it always used to be an absolute banger. Like you could always rely on Canada being an unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:00:35 race. It's been shocking for about 10 years. I don't think it's been shocking, but I think it's definitely underdelivered compared to what it used. It used to be the one, didn't it? That you just knew it was going to be epic. So fingers crossed. Yeah, of course.
Starting point is 00:00:48 And, you know, they always turn back the time, don't they, Formula One, to that amazing Jensen Button victory, that scintillating five-hour race where we were waiting for most of it. And overrated, Tommy. Well, that'll be controversial. So let's, before Tommy shares any more controversial opinions, share a five-star review. This one is from Pablo. Santos in the USA, and if you want yours to be read out, please leave us a five-star review
Starting point is 00:01:10 and let us know why you love this podcast. I'm a Netflix-born fan. The first live race I ever saw was Abu Dhabi 2020. Good Lord. I haven't missed a live quality or race since. As any real fan, I was instantly in need of F1 content and scoured the racing podcasts. When I found Matt and Tommy,
Starting point is 00:01:26 I could instantly tell they were fanboys of F1 just like so many of us. They produced the perfect mix of knowledge and banter that you would expect from a gathering with friends who really love F1. Look no further. these guys are simply the best. Oh, thank you so much, Pablo.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Much appreciated. Glad to see you're in the Formula One family and I hope you enjoy your stay. Okay, let's get into some predictions now then. Biggest good surprise. So I look to the weather forecast and there might be some rain in the air. In which case, I have gone for Lando Norris.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Slippery conditions last time out was an absolute worldly in qualifying. Stucker knows where he shouldn't have been, ruined his entire race. However, the slidy, slippery conditions is what Lando Norris loves, thrives on. So that's why I've gone for the biggest good surprise. And hopefully there is some precipitation, because if not, it's probably not going to happen. You never know. I will continue the British bias that we are, because my biggest good surprise is Lewis Hamilton.
Starting point is 00:02:34 I know that needs to be quite the surprise to say that when a seven-time world champion is being the biggest good surprise but I can just see him having a banging race he loves Montreal is really good around there yeah first race win
Starting point is 00:02:50 I don't know off the top of my head how many wins he's got around there but it's a lot very good yeah it might be a lot yeah seven-ish something like that and yeah I can just see Hamilton continuing his great drive
Starting point is 00:03:03 from Spain into Canada. What is a good surprise after a very good performance in Spain? Is he winning? Is this what this is doing? I might have to beat a Red Bull or something like that. Be a Red Bull. All right, that's fair. I'll take that. Biggest flop I've gone for. Kevin Magnuson. This man lost his front wing last time out after a fantastic qualifying,
Starting point is 00:03:28 ruined his race. I feel like he'll want a vengeance. he'll want to come back to Canada and really grab it with both hands and get a good result out of that hast but it won't happen because the biggest flop curse is now on Kevin Magnuson it's all vibes, I'm sorry Kevin
Starting point is 00:03:45 but it may well happen again. So I don't want to say this one but I've gone for biggest flop as Fernando Alonso you thought I was going to say Max in you? I really did and I hoped you were going to. now I've gone for Fernando Alonso he's been absolutely going ham with the fact that this will be the last time I ever not finish on the podium you know really big enough that that was the last time we'll have a bit of a floppy race but I don't know maybe it's just a bit of pessimism but because obviously do hope you can carry on pessimism yeah
Starting point is 00:04:26 but I'd love it obviously if Fernando did a good but let's love it obviously if Fernando did a good but let's We just have these vibes and I just feel like Fernando might struggle. Okay, that's really interesting. As we now head to pole position, and I've gone for Fernando Alonzo, rainy conditions, do you remember what he did last year, front row of the grid in difficult, wet qualifying conditions? Now, I am very much hedging my bets on a wet, Canada. But look, when has the weather ever lied on a Tuesday as we're recording this all the time?
Starting point is 00:05:07 However, Fernando, you cannot deny. Last year's qualifying around him for Fernando was the best of anyone the entire year. To stick that Alpine on the front row of the grid, unbelievable. It's going to go one better. He's going to stick it on pole and it's going to be the greatest thing ever. Yeah. And imagine if he does, that would be unbelievable. And you're not going to be here for the watch long. As long as it's not Charles McClare, I don't care. No, I would care, actually. I'd care a lot if I had a lot of off. Yeah, I think I missed the watchalong in our old venture when Alonso did this and I was gutted because I was up off my chair celebrating.
Starting point is 00:05:44 It would have been quite something to behold. So, pole position, I have gone for a big shock and gone for Max Astappen. I feel like maybe the way this season's going, maybe we'll think over the summer break, the next race. But I feel like there needs to be some kind of like betting system where you only get like, you get extra points if you don't go for a Red Bull or something. It could just get confusing. We can barely tot up our own predictions each race week.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Now you want to stick a betting system in there as well. Yeah, maybe not. Yes, maybe Max Verstappen is now banned. You can only use a certain amount of Max Verstappen's a year. Yeah, but I'm behind the predictions. so I need to catch up, so I'm just going boring. I don't even know what the score is right now, but we'll have to top that up and figure that out.
Starting point is 00:06:36 I've got it tighted up. Hang on. You keep talking and I'll find it. Okay, perfect. So I'll talk about how Fernando Alonzo is certainly going to get pole position. And I cannot wait for Tommy to be like, oh, I can't believe I put him his biggest flop. Oh, I wish I'd just gone with you, Matt.
Starting point is 00:06:50 What a great F1 guru you are, Matt. Like, honestly, you just know so much about Formula One. It is sensational. And I wish I was you. And I'm really glad you filled in all that time because I didn't update Spain. Perfect. Well, someone, we will top it up and let you know next time. I mean, you're about a couple or three points ahead.
Starting point is 00:07:11 And that's incredible considering you've gone for a very boring amount of predictions as well. So although I have found some loopholes as well, which we won't comment. Yeah, you cheat. Let's move on now to my top, well, our. Let's move on to our top three. I'm like Ron Burgundy. Just read whatever's in front of me. In third position, I have gone for it.
Starting point is 00:07:30 Sergio Paris It's just He's going to get a podium He's in the fastest car on the grid It's a Can it be considered a street track? He is a street king Barring Monaco
Starting point is 00:07:42 So let's see But I just I can't not put him on the podium Because it's obscene to think He wouldn't be on it Yeah I have gone Third place
Starting point is 00:07:55 Sergio Paris Okay I can just see let someone's Oh I know exactly what your second and first are going to be now you're going to know what they are brilliant well let's fly through this one then
Starting point is 00:08:08 in second place I have gone for Fernando Alonzo he'll get pole Max Verstappen will break everyone's hearts and then win by 30 seconds and Fernando will fight off Sergio Perez in the greatest duel for the second place slot
Starting point is 00:08:22 of all time I'm here for it so P2 I have gone for Logan Sergeant. No, it is Lewis Hamilton. Yeah, I think he's going to have a good race.
Starting point is 00:08:37 I was going to say, split the Red Bulls, who beat you. Spoiler alert, who's won. You'll never guess. And yeah, I feel like Hamilton's going to have a good old race. A good old race. A good old race. And in first position, I have gone for no surprises here. Lance Verstappen.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Max Verstappen, he's Thanos but then what happened to Thanos eventually he got overthrown so eventually all the infinity stones that Max currently has
Starting point is 00:09:08 will be the end of him and he will not win all the time but for now he's continuing to win for the foreseeable future he'll get bored he'll go off and do
Starting point is 00:09:17 some racing full time instead maybe yeah maybe I mean I'm sure that's more fun than driving an actual Formula 1 car are you gonna tell me
Starting point is 00:09:25 who's gonna win for you as well or are you just stopping there? No, I am. You're shutting down. Windows. I'm just looking at it. I'm looking at the time thinking this is a very short podcast.
Starting point is 00:09:35 So, yes, P1, I have gone for no surprise. Max Astappen. Can anyone not see this happening? Yeah, one last year. It just seems inevitable, like you say, like a Thanos. It's just driving the best he ever has. The car is so clear. he's driving amazingly well
Starting point is 00:09:58 and yeah I don't know what anyone can do to beat him we need some rain we need a lot of rain or Monaco no no one needs Monaco Tommy come on you had a good few laps
Starting point is 00:10:14 and all of a sudden Monaco's the greatest day like we went to Monaco we had a great time yes and now now I've woken up and I still think Monaco deserves to be on the calendar but let's not say we need Monaco
Starting point is 00:10:25 That's a stretch, Tommy. Finally, one crazy prediction. I've gone for there will be at least four DNFs. Now that's off the back of a no-d-n-f race. And I think Canada could be a little bit more crazy, a few more breakdowns, slippery surface. All that good stuff. Was that rain?
Starting point is 00:10:51 Was that what? Sprinkling of rain. For audio listeners, Tommy looked like he was doing salt bay. Such a current to me. I know, we're such boomers. Four DNFs for me at least. And I'll be taking that point home. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:11:06 Oh, confident. My one crazy prediction and this one I need to rely on fans, either tweeting us. No, no, no, no, no. Don't start influencing a crazy prediction you hadn't even said yet. Mine will be that we'll see during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend a Nicholas Latifie tribute banner from someone in Canada. Don't call for it. I'm not calling for it.
Starting point is 00:11:33 No, you're rigging the result right now. Someone is going to start ferociously doing a banner that's going to the Canadian Grand Prix. We have listeners in Canada, Tommy. We don't release this until Thursday, so they won't be able to get ready in time. Okay, if you do... No, no, no, no. If someone genuinely wants to give you a point and draws you a Latifie banner, but has to say, Tommy plus one point or something on it as well, that would be,
Starting point is 00:11:55 that would make my life. Yeah, because I think we'll know as well. It has to be seen on TV. Oh, okay. It can't just be a picture of someone going to the race with, here we go. Although that would be funny to send us that as well. But it has to be seen on TV.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Do send us that, but hopefully it's on TV. I want like lots of, like him on a go or something. Yeah. Do that. Not asking for much then, Tommy, no. No, no. Cool. Well, get artisting, everyone.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Now, the one thing I did want to talk about before we went away for forever, for me, Canada. I'm not a part of it this weekend. Tommy, I think this is a good time to announce, considering this is going out Wednesday slash Thursday, if you watch it, listen to it on, watch it on. Who is replacing me for Saturday and Sunday watchalongs slash podcast slash on this channel? It is. Grace and Frank. No, it's not. It is. So, Friday, Friday podcast, we have someone you may have heard of called Katie Fairman, I think her name is. Never heard of that. She's going to know, don't know who she is, but she's getting involved in the Friday podcast.
Starting point is 00:13:09 So exciting times for all you that constantly message saying, get on board. Katie's back. Katie's back. For one weekend and one weekend only. And then Saturday, we have Tommy, Tommy F1, Tommy. Tomo, Tuomo, whatever you want to call him. He will be doing the watchalong and also the podcast on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:13:36 And then on Sunday, Katie Fairman is back doing a watchalong. Like old times. I'm sure we have to get the three of us doing it at one point, won't we? But yeah. We certainly will. I'm sure we will. It feels weird to be not around for an F1 weekend.
Starting point is 00:13:55 I'm going to be having serious withdrawal symptoms. And also as well, the stag do, right? I didn't sort the flights on the way back. Flying at the same time as the race. Oh, you're going to be gutted. It is lights out and away I fly into 37,000 feet in the air on an easy jet flight. No chance I'm going to be able to watch it.
Starting point is 00:14:14 No Wi-Fi, yeah. I'm looking forward to... I can't remember the last time I didn't see an F-1 race live. I'm going to be literally like shaking on this plane. Yeah, you're going to just... I can't imagine the anxiety, especially when Charlotte Claire six-arm pole and pulls a 50-second lead.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Genuinely, might even get a different flight home. That is how big of an F1 fan I am. I would literally, if qualifying was so unbelievably ridiculous and there was another flight home, either earlier or later, it's going on the P1 bank account.
Starting point is 00:14:52 To be fair, to be fair, I think if Charlotte Claire puts it on pole, I think we could just get the Tofosi or Ferrari themselves to pay for it because, look, you didn't do. The only watchalong you've not done this year was Le Mans, which was just because it was an impromptu one that I decided to do. Ferrari took the W. If Charles actually wins or Carlos wins when you're not there, the Tofosi will be paying for you to stay away from watchalongs forever. You best believe I'm actually going straight onto SkyScanor after this to see what the options are available to me.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Everyone else goes home and I'm like, cheer everyone. I'm not going to get on that flight because I'm watching Formula One on my phone in an airport. It would be like, so we should announce who's on the watch long and then I've said it and you're like, so the race will be Matt Gallagher. Qualifying will be Matt Gallagher.
Starting point is 00:15:43 You'd be there just in the airport like, oh my God. Literally, yeah, that'd be weird, but I'm genuinely considering it now. So that's good. Right. Well, there you go. That is it. Tommy. Final thoughts?
Starting point is 00:15:55 Final thoughts? Get that Latifie banner in the works and I look forward to seeing it. Thank you all. Love you all. Very demanding this co-founder, isn't it? Very demanding. My final thoughts are, look, I'm ready for another rainy race weekend. I don't mind it.
Starting point is 00:16:12 Let's have some serious changeable conditions. Let's get some chaos. Let's summon a Fernando Alonzo victory if we can. Paul position will be great for my point. Fernando Alonzo victory. I might even take half a point. I don't know how I'd manage that, but we'll see. And that is it.
Starting point is 00:16:27 I'm going to miss you all during the qualifying and race watchalongs, as well as, of course, being in the content. I'll be back. We're not doing practice, but I'll be back for the funniest tweets, which we'll release on the Monday. So look forward to that, and I'll be giving you all my thoughts on that. And, of course, obviously, our race podcasts and stuff like that. You'll be back for that.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I should probably should have mentioned that. You're back for the race podcast because, yeah, it would be on sociable hours for, as well as that race finishes. So we're doing it on the Monday. We're very aware of not making other people that are guests work courses.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Right, that is it. Thank you so much, everybody, for listening and watching. See you very soon. Take care. Adios. I'm going to Corfu. Bye. Bye. P1 is a stack production and part of the ACAST's creator network.
