Hello everybody and welcome back to the P1 podcast with Matt and Tommy.
We're here for the Italian Grand Prix.
A race of dreams.
A race where champions are born.
I am so ready, Tommy, for Monza to just make all of my dreams come true.
Wow.
Yeah, you're not hyped at all.
And no idea who you're going to predict.
It's anyone's guess.
It is anyone's game.
Let's relax here because, you know, who knows?
Who knows what I will predict?
But before we get into it, we wanted to bring you a little teaser
of what you can expect when you sign up to our Patreon.
This week's exclusive episode is a look back at Monza 2019.
Woo-ho-ho-hoo!
The last time, Charlecler won at the Italian Grand Prix
until this weekend, of course.
Enjoy.
Lap 53, then, the final lap of the race,
Charles Lecler.
He won in Spa.
He wins in Monza was indeed the line shouted by Crofti.
As he came home to finish the race in first place,
only 0.8 of a second ahead of Bottas.
Hamilton was miles behind 35 seconds in P3.
And Ricardo ended up finishing in fourth,
and Holcomberg managed a sensational P5 in the Renault.
He did.
Yes, an incredible drive from Leclair and it was also a huge statement,
the fact that Sebastian Vettel had joined Ferrari
and was meant to be this driver that was going to be the next Michael Schumacher
had won those four titles with Red Bull
and this was a proper statement from Charles to be like,
no, I'm the number one driver having won.
He'd had it in the previous year in Bahrain,
he'd look like the quicker driver throughout the year anyway
and for him to do it at Monza in front of the Tofosi
was like a massive like this is my team now.
I think that was a kind of moment that that kind of gets forgotten about
that it was such a statement on his teammate when that all was having,
you know, has to be said, a very embarrassing spin that Charles was like the new hero of Ferrari
because he was managed to win the race for the first time since Fernando Alonso in 2010 for Ferrari.
And back to back, Vic.
victories for Charles as well.
So it was a very, very emotional time for him.
And he felt like he could properly celebrate that one.
Obviously, Spar had a lot of difficult moments there,
but you really felt the emotion after he won in Italy.
And I guess the final question has to be,
should LeCleur have been given a penalty?
No, absolutely not.
Next question.
Probably should have, but I'm glad he didn't.
I can imagine what that would have happened.
Yeah.
It's funny in Formula One.
and we're however much you think you're impartial we're all we all kind of we're all guilty of it
that you kind of you want them to stick to the rules but also you don't want them to rob the battle for the lead
we saw this in austria with max and landau that and this is this is the problem with formula one that
rules are so kind of it's not black and white there are so many different
incidents you can have, you can drive in so many different ways, you can push people off and say,
well, actually, technically, they're on the track and I gave them a car's width and this is the
the room. So we kind of want those rules to be implemented, but also we don't want, we don't want
to see the stewards having to make decisions when there's a battle for the lead.
And yes, thankfully, this was only, this was of course, Michael Mammar.
Massey's only controversial decision that he had to make throughout his career.
I jest, of course.

Right, let's get into our predictions.
It's time.
I'm so ready.
for all of this to come into the world.
Biggest good surprise, Ferrari.
No builder.
Love it.
No team.
Sorry, no team.
No driver.
No specifics here apart from Ferrari.
They are going to whip out the sexiest, fastest car of the weekend.
I just...
And you're going to whip...
What?
That's crazy.
That's the sentence for our patron.
That's wild.
yeah I look Ferrari have had a poor run of form recently
I mean Zanvort was decent but if you look at the last few
it's been it's been a difficult time since Monaco basically
but I think they've been cooking I think I think they've been
they've thrown up as soon as we got out at Bahrain they're like
well we're not going to win the championship let's get ready for Monza and Monaco
so it's going to happen Ferrari let's let's get surprising shall we
come on lovely stuff
my biggest good surprise
is Sergio
Perez
it's not Ferrari
it's not Ferrari
this of course
I'm
opening it up to interpretation
it could be that
he's the closest
he's been to Maxisthapen all year
it could be that
it's the first weekend
where he doesn't get one question about his
race seat
we'll see
interesting
But no, I do think
on paper
it's not the most
difficult of circuits
of course
and Perez has done well in the past here
and I feel like
in theory
he should be closer to Maxus Dappen
so that is my thinking behind
the biggest good surprise
he's been closer than he has been in a while
17 seconds in Zandvoort Tommy
so you're saying even close than that I see it
I see it
let's get a biggest flop.
Okay.
Sorry in advance.
Not that the flop has had much powers recently.
Lando Norris.
Lando Norris is my biggest flop,
mainly because he's off the back of Zandvoort
where he won by 23 seconds.
So if he wins by anything less than 22,
we're in the money.
But no, I believe that the McLaren hype
is obviously going to be fully in force.
And this is obviously just vibe.
and Lando may well just win the Grand Prix
and none of this comes true.
However, if McLaren finished third and fourth
and Lando finishes fourth, we're talking.
We're talking floppy.
So we're opening it up again to a bit of
who knows what it will be that I'll try and claim flop for.
But Landon Norris, sorry.
That is very interesting because biggest flop
I've gone for, McLaren, yeah.
You have, you naughty man.
I know.
Similar thinking to you that McLaren have been dominant, of course, in Zandvo.
But they have been so good at every track this year.
And Monza is a very, very different track to all the others.
You might even argue that it's the most different to any other track on the calendar, even Monaco.
So that is my thinking behind going for McLaren.
of course
like you said
even if both McLaren's
don't get on the podium
their form has been that good
that you can argue that
I mean when was the last time
they've had this streak
haven't they that's what they've been shouting about
is the streak that they've had of podium
when was the last time they weren't on the podium
I don't know
like really start of the season
Japan
Japan
Yeah because every time
Oh
No.
Oh, sorry, yeah, Piastri was on the podium at Belgium.
Yeah, so it's Japan, which is, goodness, knows how long ago.
When was that like?
April?
Yeah, 7th of April.
Wow.
Yeah.
So that would be cash.
Yeah, for sure.
No, would.
Yeah.
Okay.
Pole position.
Charlotte Claire.
What?
Nice.
So, LeClau's getting pole position.
Mike drop.
No more said.
I urge the FIA to not check the Ferrari car.
after
or inspect it
after you fly to
Monza
and inject it
with nitrous
look
am I going to
regret scoring
zero points
probably
but I did it
with a smile
on my face
so
this is my
most delusional yet
I am three points
behind you now
still aren't I
'm still three behind
I'm pretty sure
you didn't
extended you in Zamvort
no sorry
four behind now
oh Jesus
I did
okay I'm regretting everything
Okay, look, come on.
If Charlotte Clair gets pole, that's two points, yeah?
All right, let's see this.
Lovely.
Charlotte Clair poll.
Proposition, I have gone for colour sites.
Shut your mouth and bendo.
You said patron the start of this episode,
and you've just gone absolutely unhinged.
Well, you started it.
Yeah, true.
my thinking behind it
you know despite roasting you that you've gone
for Ferrari I also think they will be very quick around here
do you
it does it does feel like when I
when I saw how
bad they were in the slow corners at Zandvort
that I wouldn't put it past them
you know that there is this theory that they're basically like
as soon as Monaco finished they're like right
we need to win Monza now forget the chance
championship.
2026 is our year, so it doesn't really matter.
We just want to get some...
Yeah, exactly.
So, yeah, maybe that is the thinking.
And they did it last year.
And Carlos was the one that did it last year,
because Charles has obviously been the better qualifier,
but there aren't many corners, of course, at Monza,
and it can be very close between them.
That's why he went for Perez's biggest good surprise as well.
You're like, there's not many corners,
so you can't actually lose that much time.
Exactly.
Yeah, interesting.
I see it.
I see it.
I see it.
Okay, let's go to our top three then, shall we?
And in third position, I am locking in.
Max for Stappen.
Max will extend his championship lead.
Spoiler alert.
Because I've flopped Norris, so you know, you can see where this is going.
But yeah, Max for Stappen, third position.
I have gone for colour sights.
A little pole to P3.
Wow.
Ouch.
did he do that last year as well?
I think he did actually.
Yes, because he fought Charles right at the end,
but it was the scariest thing of all time.
It was.
Yeah, I think, well, we'll see why later.
Oh, you teasing man.
Let's go to second place where I have put Carlos Sines on second of the podium.
I don't know what kind of English grammar that is right now,
but Carlos gets second because Ferrari will be the dominant,
Nice
P2
I'm gonna regret all of this
P2 I have gone
for
Charles
Leclair
Why
Why can you have just backed him
For once in your life
You shal hater
I know
I think I've given him like 10 out of tens
In the last two driver ratings
But I am a hater
And to be fair
If I went for Charleclair
You won't be able
I could have gone tactical, yeah, and just gone for the same,
copy you just to keep the lead, you know.
God, what great content that would be, Tommy.
Yeah, exactly.
So I didn't do that.
It'd just be me in the predictions.
Well, Tommy's gone for the same thing.
Indeed.
So, yeah, I've gone for a little P2 for Charles LeCler.
No victory.
No victory.
For Ferrari, unless a Ferrari engine is winning.
Hassah winning.
No,
Joe Guan,
you,
oh, sorry,
a spoiler.
In first position,
I have gone for
Shaula.
Maxfuss.
Charlotte Claire wins Monza.
And we are all very happy.
For audio listeners,
I rotated 180 degrees
on my chair
for pure dramatic effect.
Nice.
Charlele is winning Monza
and even if it doesn't happen,
I've imagined it right now,
so it has happened in my head.
right this second.
Even if it doesn't happen,
you'll be watching
2019 Italian Grand Prix
during the watch-along.
I just pretend that
it's the current race
commenting all the way through it.
We'll happily do that
when they DNF on the first lap
and we'll just change over to 2019.
P1.
I've gone for
Lewis Hamilton.
Very rogue.
The Ferrari engine?
No, I was joking.
Obviously I was going to go for a house win.
Yeah.
He's good around.
Monza is one there
a lot
I can see
it being
you know
Hamilton wins
I was going to Ferrari
gets a bit of a cheer
for a change
and
yeah
then we've got
a very
odd podium
that is a bizarre podium
that I mean
we have
we have cooked
this week
so should we just
lock in zero points
now
and just move on
to the next one
I've changed my mind
so many times
of this one because Monza is so different and now
the pecking order is so close.
I've been like, oh,
this team will be good. No, no, this team
will be good. This team will be bad.
Like, yeah, it's a difficult one to predict.
But that is the beauty of predictions.
We can say whatever we want
and it doesn't matter. Okay, let's go
to our one crazy prediction
and mine is
Ferrari will score better than they did
in Zanvort. Okay.
A third and fifth, which is a
great weekend for Ferrari.
they're going to do better than that.
And I think that's a crazy prediction
because they've been terrible since Monaco,
so thank you.
Fair enough.
I will allow it.
You will allow it.
Well, there's no choice.
Any Ferrari predictions can straight through for Italian.
Come on, pre.
My prediction, one crazy prediction,
is,
and it kind of goes with my top three prediction,
but I'm going to lock in
no Red Bull or McLaren on the podium,
which has not happened
all season.
So it's a very bold prediction.
But if it's going to happen anywhere,
I believe it will be Monza.
Wow.
So that's what I'm going for.
Wow, wow, wow.
Oh my goodness gracious,
May, we have been smoking on some serious pack.
Yeah.
And we're going to look back at this
in the race podcast
and go, what the hell were we thinking?
Okay, let's go to the three crazy predictions
from you wonderful lots.
P1, Patreon.
member read, Alex Albon qualifies top of Formula B.
Very possible.
The old Williams classic.
They're like, no, no, no, we're doing a more overall package for the season.
Actually, whip out the old Williams.
We'll go for that for Monza.
Can I just say I'm proud of us for not going anything Williams related for Monza for
biggest good surprise?
I mean, look, I only went for Ferrari and that was it.
P1 Patreon member Sam, Ferrari Pole, but not a win.
Uh.
And then finally, P1 Patreon member, Cial.
at underscore H.
At some point during the race,
there will be contact
between drivers at turn one.
Sorry, how?
No, that has to be past lap one.
I mean, that is not crazy
to have contact at lap one,
turn one, Monza.
The most dangerous corner on the track.
But then this is Formula One now
when no one retires or there's any yellow flags,
apparently, so.
Fine.
It has to be good contact.
We're not talking a little wheel bang.
It has to be high quality.
concept.
Yeah, high quality, a little M plate goes flying.
You know.
Yeah.
You need to see debris.
As long as, yeah, slow-mo replay where some debris is flying.
That's what we need.
Okay.
It has actually changed that first corner, isn't it?
It has.
Slightly wider, isn't it?
Wider and tighter, I think.
So I don't really know how that's going to work.
See how that one goes.
But there you go.
That is our predictions for the Italian Grand Prix.
Tommy, what are your final thoughts?
My final thoughts?
are
I should say that
I'm going to kind of
groan of your
Charle-Cleur fan-boism this weekend
but I'm looking forward to it
it's going to be a good weekend
and I'm here for the watch-along
and whatever happens,
be that a victory or pain, we'll find out.
Yeah, look, I think everyone,
I think my Charlotte-Clair fan-boism
has been reasonably intact
and sort of controlled
this season. So let me have this one weekend
to dream. That will be lovely. And yes, I can't wait as well. The watch longs will be there
Saturday and Sunday, live on Twitch, as well as all of your wonderful podcast content that
you've come to know and love from myself and Tommy. And perhaps just maybe I'll be using
this Italian flag to wipe my tears. So there you go. Thank you everybody.
I love. I love. Oh, I like that. It turned it around. Beautiful.
See you soon, everybody. Lots of love. Bye.
