Hello everybody and welcome back to the P1 podcast with Matt and Tommy. Predictions, a bit of news before we get into it. Tommy, we have a fast and frantic weekend. It's coming at us a bit sooner if you are living under a rock. The first bit of news and firstly, how are you? But secondly is the fact we're racing on Saturday. We are indeed. So we'll have a practice session on Thursday, very early in the week, as you say. will be strange watching practice on Thursday

and as we get into the weekend we've had a few races on Saturday in kind of recent times, haven't we, like Vegas and stuff? But still unusual to... Yeah, but that's like midnight on. That's like turning to Sunday. Although we had Bahrain and Saudi one year, I think maybe a couple years ago they did it on a Saturday

because of a holiday again. So yeah, we've had it before. We've had it before, but it's not the norm. No, it's not. lock in and don't forget. Don't forget my word. Don't wake up on Sunday thinking, here we go, because there's nothing on. All right? You can watch some of our content instead. Right. Other news to get you up to speed with a busy old time for Matt and Tommy. We went outside. I know. We did. Unbelievable. Unexpected, really. But we have to go outside when an opportunity to

interview none other than Max Verstappen comes our way, which is very, very, very, exciting. We don't know exactly when this is going out. This might be going up before or after this episode. I don't know. So we're waiting on the green light on that one. But Tom Bellingham, have you firstly calm down? And secondly, processed the, what, I know that we have to gas it up, but genuinely, such an awesome interview and something I just cannot wait to put into the nether sphere. Agreed. Yeah. What's hilarious is when you said, oh we were outside and did an interview with Max I got nervous and I've already done it now

I don't need to be nervous anymore but yeah it was absolutely incredible and cannot believe how well it went you know it was one of those interviews where we had an insane amount of time I can't believe how long we had to speak to match this happened over 30 minutes is unheard of everyone we spoke to afterwards said we've just had 30 minutes with match they're like what how much

13 no 30 30 35 and I was kind of I didn't want to get in my head of like this has to be the best into you ever because that's when you know just take it as it comes it's going to be good whatever and I couldn't have been happier with how it went

you know by the end of it proper like free flowing chatty podcast him diving into loads of things he could tell you kind of opened up to us a bit more and stuff and it was brilliant it was so much fun I can't believe we got to do it yes the true honest

We were there. And that was the Max versus 100 cart race. I was lucky enough to be invited to be co-commentator with the wonderful Alex Jakes, which was certainly an experience. honestly trying to commentate when you can just see a hundred carts and no real indication of who they are is an experience you just have to laugh of what was going on for most of the time because it's like

this is carnage this is chaos but thankfully that's what red bull wanted they didn't want us to go oh cart 71's gone around the it was just yeah quite frankly ridiculous to watch and you did an awesome job um and it's very very cool to see p1 podcast Matt from p on podcast on you know like live on disney pleasant stuff I know and it was right on the in the intro as well they were like oh yeah we're going to have you in the intro short you're going to be just sort of casually stood by the bar talking to pie face and I was like why I love it and thank you but yeah completely agree about the whole I was watching outside from a balcony lower than you are not important enough to be on the top yeah tried to get you up and they're like sorry no sorry and and watching the race

because everyone's in the same overalls and other than max all you really know who is it is is Max. But it was an awesome event, even, you know, watching it from, from the sidelines, 100 carts, even though when you see 100 carts, you're like, that's a lot of cards. When you actually see it all together, you're like, wow, that is actually insane. Because I remember thinking like, oh, yeah, you know, Max will win this. It'd be fine. But then when you see 100 carts, you go, oh, actually, that is absolute carnage at the start. And, you know, he picked off so many at the start. It was insane. The lap one, obviously after

Madrid, everyone was just wanting some kind of entertainment and thankfully I think it delivered. But yeah, lap one could have easily made or broken his race in the sense of like... Or breaking his ribs. Or his ribs. Or his ribs. Almost went straight, head on into someone backwards. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

So he bailed out of that, which is fair enough. And I love how they gave him stick for cutting a small corner when everybody had two Joe collapse to try and stay ahead of him. Or also going into someone that was facing the other way and his injury. himself. Exactly.

Probably not the best method. It was wise. But yeah, to watch that was utterly ridiculous. The proximity chat was amazing. Yes. To hear drivers sort of like screaming and please leave me alone, Max, and things like that. And shout out to Tomo as well. Our good friend Tomo, he did a very good job.

He did very well. He did an awesome job. So, yeah, big up the Tomo. Right. Predictions time. But before we do, there's a little point that we have to discuss. So it's 4634 to Tom Bellingham. Quite frankly, keeps bringing up the whole mind the gap joke.

Sent me a meme, actually, about mind the gap. It's funny as well because we're going karting today, and I'm going to use the exact same thing back to you when I look at the gap between us and qualify. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is your return. Yeah, yeah. Keep taking the Mickey, Tommy. It's going to bite you in the ass one day.

But it's 46.34 to you. But a lot of people on Instagram came to my defence and said that Charlotte Clover was a good surprise last week. well what are we doing about it Tommy because I mean I myself you didn't even argue it I didn't argue it because it's not it's not a good surprise I mean I didn't give him a high grade in driver rating so I cannot sit here and go well actually yes I think it does have a point when I didn't even myself try and push it

I just wanted to bring it bring it to the table because everyone's like oh Matt's been robbed it's like don't get me wrong like I didn't think that was even a contentious discussion that we had where we were saying like oh my God, like, you've robbed me there. I think you were just like, yeah, fair enough, it's not. Because one, he wasn't on the podium. Two, Hamilton beat him in qualifying. He was behind Hamilton before Hamilton retired.

So when you pick a top runner, like a Leclair and Norris of Estappen, they kind of have to be on the podium, really, because that's the kind of rules of it. And if he'd started last and got to fourth, fine. But he started fifth. So Maya Campbell, 97 was the top. comment that says, Charlotte's a good surprise, only qualified 0.006 behind Hamilton with the old engine and he had incredible race pace. Look, I am the first person to defend Charles LeCler when he does a great performance. I defend his poll to win ratio like it's my own. But for this, one, it was self-inflicted having the old engine, as we discussed in the podcast. And secondly, he had incredible race pace because Kimmy-Anseigne, he didn't want to go anywhere near him, because he didn't need to go near him. He didn't need to pass him because he knew there was going to be a pit stop happening. So I would love to say, because he led a lot of the race that he deserves good surprise but the only reason he led the race was because he was on

an alternate strategy and was never going to win without a red flag so I've just argued not having a point but I don't want pity points I want real points okay so there you go I think people should you know think wow respect Matt well done you're losing a dignity top 10 respect man yes fast forward five minutes into you know the the main race podcast where I'm trying to argue something that yeah yeah yeah so once finished 13th didn't be what and you're like well actually he was running 13th at one point See, you know me too well. Right, let's get into the predictions then. I'm 12 points behind as we go to a good surprise.

Tommy, who's going first? Because I've got no indication of who's going first. Oh, it does. No, it says there. I can't read. Me to go first. Perfect. My good surprise for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is Williams.

So Williams, right? You're not learned. No, no, listen up. Listen up. They're bringing a big dog package to Azerbaijan, huge, almost an entirely different car is what James Vals has said. Oh, wow, they need it. They could go backwards with that new car, but they could go forwards. And so, hey, let's see where they end up because their current runner form is very bad.

So, hey, we'll take it, Carlos Sines, of course, podium last time out here in Azerbaijan. Yeah, nearly did, in that very strange qualifying. but yes, I've gone for Williams because I need points, I've gone back to teams, I'm desperate, and I saw Williams are bringing a big old package, so why not? Come on James Vowls. Sorry, Danny Valsh hat train.

Good surprise, I've gone for George Russell, been on a poor run of form. The race is on a Saturday, and he used to be called Mr. Saturday. No, that is actually not the reason even remotely. I do think Mercedes is going to be strong here, George Russell's been, yeah, poor runner-form, had no real pace compared to his teammate,

but I think he should do a lot better around Baku. So I'm going to go for George Russell. One person I had thought about a lot when thinking about Baku and going for good surprise, for some reason, just couldn't shake this feeling was Franco Colopinto, but he had such a good race last week. I felt like I couldn't pick him because the bar is so high. So I won't curse Franco anyway. And yeah, I'm going to go for George Russell.

Okay, interesting. Let's now move to a big flop. Big flop. I've gone for Lando Norris. No disrespect to Lando at all. It is just vibes and also feeling that maybe this isn't going to suit McLaren as much. It feels like a race that he's pretty much other than Monza. You know, he would have won in Madrid, let's be honest.

I think everyone could admit that. We could have been in a situation where he'd won three of the last four, looking very dominant, but I don't feel like this track will suit them as much. I don't need anything to do with his driving. I think it would just be that maybe McLaren aren't on top form this week and maybe as strong as some other teams. So that's why I've gone for Lando. Okay, interesting.

My big flop, Charlotte. Oh, I almost went for Charles. I'm not going to lie, myself. So a few things here. One, he almost always gets pole position around here. No, it's just, it's just for fun. Just for fun. Maybe.

Maybe, who knows? Unless you just spread your eggs. But no, I'm not spreading my eggs. Big flop, Shao LaClair, because of that, I think that just generally, Ferrari have thrown so many upgrades at this car and gotten hardly anywhere. and I don't think they're bringing anything else now to potentially Austin. So this could be the slump now for Ferrari from here

all the way through to Cota. And that's where I see it. You know, there's always that hype around Charleclair and whatnot. And maybe he will do well in qualifying. But there is also the caveat that his engine might be broken because they're going to pop that in free practice one and hope for the best and hope it's okay after Monza.

And if it's not, he may well have to take a penalty and start at the back. So there's plenty of like if spots and maybe's here. But I just feel as though it's a terrible time to be a Shaluklau fan with one win this year. And I don't even think Baku can save us. It's also a very different qualifying this year, isn't it? And, you know, speaking to Maxis Stepan and him telling us about how you drive the... You're not going to do that.

No, I'm not going to do that. You're not going to do that. But it is a different ballgame, isn't it, with qualifying this year? And that is why, you know, Charles himself at the start of the year, said he'd struggle, you know, this track he always came to. And even when the Ferrari wasn't very good, he could get pole position because he could just do what he does best, which is either get pole position or put it in the wall. And a lot of the time, it's been pole position around this track, because it has been so strong. And it's about pushing the limits and being

brave. But maybe with these new cars, cannot do that as much, maybe. No, but look, I've seen him win in real life this year. So that's something. And we move on to 27 in terms of Charlotte Clare and Hopium. So there you go. Let's now go to poll position. My poll position is Kimmy Antonelli. Give me that point right now. Give me that easy point.

Pop a little point next to my name. This is when it doesn't happen. But I think that I would be very silly 12 points behind to not go for Kimmy Antonelli pole position. Big old straight, which I think Mercedes will love. I think that they will be very, very quick in that final sector. I do think that McLaren will be better than perhaps you've suggested with the big flop in those first couple of sectors. But I think that they will struggle in that last sector because they've got the gear ratio problem,

which I don't know if you're familiar, but they have a different gear ratio set up. I know you are, Tommy, is more to everybody listening, that they essentially can get better traction, better in the sort of shorter run into corners, but the long straits is where they take the pain. So this one, there is an enormous straight in sector three. That's basically all there is. And I think McLaren will hurt a little bit. So I'm not sure if they'll be in the fight for pole.

And that's why I've gone for Kimmy and Tonelli. So I have gone for George Russell. Hmm. Same. You didn't change. You just went straight for George. I did. Mercedes, of course, are on a absolutely pathetic run of four missed pole positions.

You know, they've not had a poll in four races now, completely destroyed by the likes of Lando Norris and Pierre Gassley. And the fact that, yeah, pole position was all Mercedes all the way up until Hungary, and then we've had Lando, Lando, Piero Lando. But I think it's going to be a Mercedes track, I think. That straight is going to be very, very nice for them indeed. a bit like Monza. And I could see them getting pole position and being very, very strong around here.

So I've backed George for good surprise. I'm going to back him for poll on Friday. Okay, yes. Good reminder. Another little reminder. Qualifying on Friday, everybody. Third position in the race. Third position, I've gone for Kimmy Antonelli,

which is basically a flop these days, isn't it? A P3 for Antonelli. again, I think Mercedes is going to be very strong, but I'm putting Antonelli into third place. Oh, right, okay. Third position for myself is Lando Norris. I think there'll be, as I said, as I kind of mentioned, I think they'll be strong in the first couple of sectors,

struggling the last, but Lando's on such an insane run of form. He's got a feel in the car that has been so impressive. We've been gassing him up this entire season, really, and I think you'd be silly not to put him on the podium. I know that they struggled at Monza, but at least Baku does have some technical parts to the circuit. It's not just pure straits and medium-speed corners.

So, I mean, yeah, to be fair, actually, that it's kind of Baku. But it's fine. I think there is more that the McLaren can enjoy those sort of shorter bursts out of the 90-degree corners, which I think they will be better at. So, yeah, third place for me, for Lando Norris. It would be a very interesting race having those two sectors that are so different, because we've seen change between teams.

We're going to see purple sectors for flipping Valtrey Bottas in sector one. Yeah, we'll see people that look like they're on for a poll app and then finish six tents up. And then finish eighth.

Yeah, yeah, genuinely. So weird. So that is going to be fascinating. I do like that. It's quite fun to be like, oh my God, could he? Oh no, it's a second down. Yeah.

Let's get a second place. My second place. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is Max Verstappen. We haven't spoken about Red Bull in this predictions podcast yet, but I do think they're going to be strong around here, especially in the hands of Max. You look to Monza.

He was right there at the beginning with Kimmy and fighting the Mercedes. Of course, fell back a little bit, but I do think that the combination of sort of a low downforce setup and that big old straight will actually be pretty good for Max. And let's not forget, he's on a phenomenal run of podiums, not full run, because he's had a couple of DNFs. but in terms of like the amount of podiums he's had in the last seven or so races. And I've never really spoken his name in predictions. And he constantly keeps getting podiums.

So I'm going to stop ignoring Max. And it's not because we interviewed him and I fell in love with him. Second place, Max must happen. Second place. I've gone for George Russell, Mercedes 2,3. Yeah, gone for George P2, a return back on the post. podium after a tricky race last time out. And again, same with Antonelli. Mercedes should be very, very strong around here. And I think George will have a better run, as I've said, with good

surprise. Are you going to have a similar outlook to my dad where you've spoken George a lot in these predictions? If he doesn't deliver for you, you never speak about him ever again. Maybe. We'll see. We will see. Okay. First position. P1 I've gone for Max Verstappen I think Max Verstappen is going to win the race Is getting his win Yes I actually do

No I do genuinely think he's going to win Have you stopped thinking about staring into his eyes Look Everyone thinks there's a P1 curse And there is Because my God Everyone thinks there's a P1 curse And there is

But what I would say to that Is we interviewed him And he went straight out on a cart track and went from 101st to first. So the curse is broken. It doesn't matter anymore. And he's going to win the race. Yeah, he's been very strong.

In those last few races, as you say, podium in every single race that he hasn't had DNFs in, which were a couple. But yeah, his run has been so strong. Could have easily won in Madrid, but that is mainly because you can't overtake. but of course he cut that turn one and had to give the place back a bit of a what might have been. But I think he'd be strong around here because it bodes me with confidence that he was strong around Monza as well, which maybe shouldn't have been good. And then I think he'll be strong in the kind of twisty bit that's a bit more like your kind of Monaco's, I guess. So hopefully it gets off the line.

The twisty bit, ladies and gentlemen. There you go. This is why you listen to the P-1 podcast. I mean, it is twisty. Very similar thinking for both of us there with Max, me one position lower than what you've gone for. My first position is Kimmy Antonelli. Tell me why, Matt.

So I think, right, and this might be a little bit left field. I think Kimmy's going to be quite strong around here. Do you? Yeah, no, no, no. I am going out on a whim here. People might clip this up and think I'm being a bit crazy. You are. I think Kimmy Antonelly might win this one.

You're a crazy. I'm a crazy guy. I really am. Wow, you're so out there. I know. I'm just feeling a bit frisky today. That's what it is. But yeah, I think Kimmy, I think he's going to extend his championship lead.

I believe he's going to be quicker than George again this weekend. And he's on a phenomenal run. He's been consistent every single weekend almost, especially when it comes to pace. We've not really seen too many drop-offs maybe once or twice over the course of the entire year. and that's why he's so far ahead in the championship. So I've gone for Kimi Antonelli. We now move on to P-Wat. F-Wat. P-Wat.

I don't know how to say it. I never do. Tommy, random number generator between 4 and 22. And we have to do it on the fly. And it's you to go first, I believe, as well. Oh, no. Here we go. Generates.

Come on, do. P-9. Oh, oh. Oh, gosh, it depends if it's... Lawson. Limblad. Okay. So I said Lawson thinking he might go back to the V-Car this week.

Maybe. But we don't know. We still don't know about Hajar and his wrist. Rists do not fix very quickly. That is for sure. Yeah, there's been a lot of talk about that. Obviously, we were recording yet, as you say, before we know. There's, from the chat I've heard of all the tracks,

you don't want to risk it out, it's Baku. because if he's kind of half okay and goes into the wall at the castle section, that's big problems. So there we go. Austin and Limblad together again. Yeah. Love that. Love that.

Okay. One crazy prediction, Tommy. My one crazy prediction is Lance Stroll finishes the race. What is this? Absolutely. So he's not finished. He's finished two of the last nine races. Has he actually?

Yes, and he's not finished a race for three races. And also there's an extra element of like why this would be crazy if it came in. Because I reckon one go down that Baku Strait and that Aston Martin and Lance Stroll is might rage quit the whole weekend. So. Interesting. Okay. All right. We will continue this discussion.

And also, I love it. Because it would be absolutely cinema on the watch along. Everyone's going to be now locked into Lance Stroll's race to see what's happening. Yes, and we will continue this in a second when we get to the next set of predictions because that conversation is not over, but I won't any more than that. My one crazy prediction, no red flags in qualifying. In quali. There was a record number last time.

Five. Five. Four or five? Five. I think it was five. It was the most in history where it just kept going on. on and on. Yeah, just constant crashes,

constant mistakes, no red flags in qualifying this year. Okay. I don't know what that means just generally for the weekend that it would just be a procession, but no red flags. There you go.

so that's four points. That is quite bold. Yeah, so it's happened twice this year. Wow. Both Aster Martins and both Cadillacs finishing. Okay. A back of, you see back in you're like, yeah, that's the one.

They are slow enough that they won't really be hitting too many big speeds. They won't be hitting apexes or troubling the walls anyway. Just finish the race, guys. You just need data. That's all we need. FP4. Very, very true indeed. My Patreon prediction is from Anna Bjerk, and it is from, sorry, it is, George Russell.

will finish higher than Kimi Antonelli. And when is the last time we saw that? The last time that happened was Silverstone, which even then you could argue wasn't him finishing higher. It's because Antonelli retired and finished 15th. But actually on the road was Austria, right? On the road was Austria, yeah.

So a long time ago, when was that? Way back in June. Wow, 28th of June. Okay. You have gone all in on George Russell. I really have. I love it. I love it. So George, don't let me down. You found out that our videos get popped up in his algorithm and all of a sudden you're like, yep, George Russell, you are winning it all. I love it. Let's see. Well, George, for the sake of my prediction championship, please don't do too well this weekend. Thank you so much. Actually, I don't think I've really clocked this, but yeah, this is actually really bold. The more I look at this, I'm like, that's not going in.

What's that? Just George finishing ahead of Kimmy, I think it's rarely. happened. He did in Australia, of course, and we all thought that was going to be how the season went. Canada, you can't really, obviously, Kimmy finished ahead because George retired, but he was running ahead. Yeah, they were fighting. Barcelona, he finished ahead, but Kimmy was going to beat him. Austria, he did actually finish ahead, and Silverstone, George finished ahead, but Kimmy was going to beat him again. So this is a terrible prediction is what I'm. Yeah, so that's the same as my Cadillac and Aston Martin finishing all together. That's happened twice as well.

Okay, so we've held hands and jumped into the crazy predictions. Although mine feels so much more unreliable than yours somehow, even though it's not happened. Mad. Yeah. Family predictions. Oh yeah, the big championship, 10, 5. The one they all want to win. Mind the Gap Championship, we might call it, to the Gallagher's.

10-5. And I have got, Ellie, sat in her car waiting to have her hygienist appointment. And I needed to call her right now because she's going in in a few minutes. Hello, my darling. How are you? I'm good, thank you. Perfect. I'm very well.

Thanks for asking. So, have you thought about not only your teeth but the top three? Yes. I hope so. You hope so. Perfect. All right. We need to extend the lead.

We need to absolutely dominate the Bellingham's. So P3, please, for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. I'm going to go with Max for P3. Okay. All right. So Tommy went for first, I went for second, and you went for third. In second place, please. Kimmy P2.

Oh, no. Who have you gone for first? I'm going to go for Lando in first. Oh, okay. All right. Don't mind it. No, no. We've both said the entire podcast that we don't think McLeod are going to be very good round here.

But I like the fact you're going different because when are we actually right? They're going to updates, aren't they, I think? Yeah, but I think they're kind of stuff. Kimmy. Okay, yeah, and P1. Max. Wow. The double belling of Max this happened, P1. Okay, I went for Max P1 as well. Oh, I thought you were going to do. tell me off.
