Starting point is 00:00:06 Hello, everybody, and welcome back. One podcast with Matt and Tommy. And today we have a very special podcast for you, as you may have deciphered from the title. You're going to get to listen to our best bits from our first ever live show. Isn't that right, Tommy? It's actually weird. This is the first recording we've done together since the live show,
Starting point is 00:00:31 and it's weird not hearing like, now we've had that first show. I'm waiting for like a, way or awesome. It's now weird having the silence. So you're saying, Tommy, that you can now only function if people cheer. I need a laugh track. That's what you need. I need a laugh track.
Starting point is 00:00:48 You'll need a run carpet and everything these days, won't you, Tommy? But yeah, we just wanted to reflect very quickly before we dive into the best bits because, yeah, it needs it, I think, because it was one of, if not, yeah, the best moment I can remember in my entire working life in Formula One, just purely, well, I guess set the scene. You were the one that was more nervous for this on the run up to the show. Of course, you know, you don't massively like this kind of thing in terms of people looking at you and listening to you and you being on camera. But, you know, that's the years have gone by.
Starting point is 00:01:27 You've got better and better at it. But this was a different kettle of fish, wasn't it? Yeah. standing up in front of people, it took me back to the old GCSE drama days, which was literally my worst and most fearful subject that I absolutely hated. So yeah,
Starting point is 00:01:44 and it's the unknown. We just didn't know how people would react when we got on stage. You know, would it be like, hello, everyone would be a polite golf clap? Would it be silence? Would people cheer?
Starting point is 00:01:58 Would everyone have just not even turned up? And it was all just a big joke. who knows I'm now getting an insight into what your brain was saying in the days running up to this it was just a sick joke did we not actually sell any tickets
Starting point is 00:02:12 but when we and I'm sure you'll hear it on the recording when we walked out yeah they well the 20 minutes before we walked out was when I started getting flustered and nervous
Starting point is 00:02:23 because my mum and everyone else were just arriving and then going oh where am I sitting and I don't know I'm on the stage. I don't know where you're sitting.
Starting point is 00:02:33 You know, these things that, you know, very small moments, but all of a sudden your brain just starts overworking. So I was like, no, I just need to go backstage and just chill for a second. And yeah, my nerves were reasonably high up until the moment we walked out. And then that noise will live with me forever. That if you were there, thank you. If you weren't there, we expect you to do it next time because we will have another live show because that was honestly like nothing I'll ever experience ever again.
Starting point is 00:03:06 It's because I think it was the surprise element of it, of, you know, I was joking about, I don't know what it would be like, but I didn't expect it to be that much, you know. I thought, you know, I'd hope that people would, you know, applaud us as we came on because they're, you know, they listen to the podcast. They're here for us. They paid for their ticket and obviously like us.
Starting point is 00:03:27 But I did not expect the volume of cheering and the applause and just people were just loving it. It was just such a great atmosphere. And then, yeah, like it booming around the kind of theatre as well, like Lester Square Theatre. It was just like, oh, my word, this is insane. It was unbelievable. It was absolutely ridiculous. And that was when all of my nerves just washed away. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Was that moment when that noise hit us. And I just remember looking over to you and you looking back at me and we were like, oh, okay, this is what we're going to be working. with tonight. This is insane. Yeah, you could just both see us relax at that point, which was amazing. What was also incredible was the meet and greet that we had after the show. So, of course, it feels a bit weird talking about the meeting greet, which was after the show,
Starting point is 00:04:13 before you've listened to the best bits. But we're doing this intro now and then you can just enjoy the rest of the podcast. But I was told by the person on the door and a few other people that 90% of the people that arrived and came to the show, if you're one of them, thank you, once again, stayed for this meet and greet outside Lester Square Theatre. So you had, I don't know, 250, maybe more people just waiting for us to walk out the door. And I kid you not, I was like, no, you're not here. My brain just going, there's another show. They're not here for us. Yeah, there's another show. Surely not. It's 11 o'clock. But there's another show. Why has everyone got their phone out?
Starting point is 00:04:52 Who's it? And it was, it was baffling, wasn't it? It was absolutely insane. But yeah, the thing I loved the most was just people kind of getting an insight into how people listen to the pod and stuff. We've said it before where we love it when people share pictures of them listening to it somewhere or even if it's like our Twitch streams and they're taking a picture of like, oh, I'm here. But actually meeting you guys in person and, you know, had people from people just saying
Starting point is 00:05:25 that it helps them through their work day or remember a guy saying that he's got into running and listens to us and he's now like doing really long distances because I promised a really long podcast that he could do a full marathon so he'd keep talking for a long time yeah yeah and people
Starting point is 00:05:43 some people come over from Norway which was absolutely insane so shout out to you guys your legends but yeah just just being able to speak to you all and find out you know what this podcast means to you is just, it's incredible.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Like, it's really, really cool to hear. And yeah, the support is just mad. It gave more meaning to us, didn't it, than just like two idiots
Starting point is 00:06:05 in our respective offices talking about Formula One and then you see a number on the, you know, at the end of a month or something and go, oh, you know, people listen to our podcast.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Cool. I can pay the bills. When you actually meet them, it's incredible. And I really hope everyone had a great time if you did come along. As I say, it was so successful
Starting point is 00:06:22 that we will definitely explore what we can, do next and perhaps maybe not even in just the UK. So we're very excited for the next stages of this because I had a lot of fun. Tommy had a lot of fun, which was good. It's very amazing. I was incredibly proud of you, mate. The way in which you just bossed it was incredible. So a lot of people said that you were very inspirational and very influential to perhaps them getting into things, which I know you don't deal with compliments very well. So I can see your face but but yeah I love the fact that people found some kind of inspiration from from you
Starting point is 00:07:00 getting up there and and just doing it and following your passion and your dreams so well done congratulations thank you and thanks everyone that said that to me because yeah that was pretty surreal and mad but yeah we got up there and I think it was just yeah soon as soon as we started it were just in the in the zone and just got on with it and did did our thing and it was very very surreal, very weird. I think the weirdest thing was just doing what we do, like I kind of mentioned at the start, doing what we do, but having that initial reaction. So you just say something and some people would either like go, ooh, or like laugh or something like that. And you're just like, this is mad. Yeah, people were laughing at what we were saying. It's like a stand-up show at one point when we did
Starting point is 00:07:48 the Ferrari bit. It was a very strange experience. But an amazing. one and one I'll never, ever, ever forget. So I think on that note, we shall now dive into the best bits. I hope you enjoy it. If you missed this first live show, as I say, we'll do another one. So keep your ears and eyes on everything that we do. And we will see you for the next podcast. So enjoy.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Please, welcome to the stage. Max Verstappen's biggest fan and most loyal Red Bull supporter from day one and Tom Bellingham. That is mad. Wow. Oh my goodness. Wow. I was not expecting that. Oh my God. Wow.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Right, well that's it. Thanks so much. Cheers. Well, that was quite nice, wasn't it? Hello everyone and welcome to the very first P1 live show! Oh! I think you're going to be fine. In the rehearsal, you were like, Is anyone going to do you?
Starting point is 00:09:00 Yeah, I was like, are they going to participate? I think you might, which is great. Thank you so much for coming. This is absolutely ridiculous. When we took the leap two months ago, we didn't know if maybe two of you would turn up to something like this. But look at you, you've pretty much packed out Lester Square Theatre. And I just want to say, by the way, Tommy,
Starting point is 00:09:18 this man did not want to do a podcast. He did not want to be in front of a camera, microphone, nothing. He's now on a stage. Come on, come on. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. What am I doing here? What am I doing here?
Starting point is 00:09:34 Now, the thing I was worried about was whether you'd get involved. So thank you for sorting that part out. This show is not just us sitting there and talking for an hour and a half. It's getting you guys involved as well. So, I need to know if I've got allies or enemies in the building. You can see who I support nowadays. So, first and foremost, are there any Mercedes fans in, by way of cheer? Mercedes fans?
Starting point is 00:09:57 That's a lot of Mercedes. That's a lot of Mercedes. That's a lot of Mercedes Trans. Let's get rid of that, slander. Right. What about Red Bull? Yes! Come on! Wow. What about Ferrari? You sound incredibly chipper.
Starting point is 00:10:18 This show is going to be awful for you, I promise. They're going to want a refund. Honestly, this running order is terrible. Okay, that's great. Okay, we've got a mix. I like that. Any Alpine fans? Yes. I think the crowd. So, yes, it's been my dream for you guys to get involved with the ridiculously cringy intro that I do at the start of the podcast.
Starting point is 00:10:40 So it's going to be P1 live show, okay? So I just want to hear it back from you. So I'm going to say, hello everybody, welcome to thee. And then I want you to say, P1 live show. Okay, let's try this. Please don't let me down. Hello everybody and welcome to the... That's insane.
Starting point is 00:11:01 That is absolutely insane. I'm going to take my backpack off now. Red Bull. So I actually came in with a Ferrari top on and I was wearing a red bull backpack. It didn't feel right at all. It's a good look. I want you to share the story of us at the, we went to the bar like a few hours ago and the most, this sounds made up, but the most surreal thing happened. We've teed that up beautifully. So it, honestly, the craziest thing in the world. So I'm sat there, just chilling. We had rehearsal between two and four, right? So we were hanging around for quite some time. I'm sat in the bar just chilling, right? The brewmaster or something? Anyway, this bartender just goes to me,
Starting point is 00:11:43 you're from WTF1? And I went, used to be, used to be. It doesn't end there. That's just the start. He then goes, oh, well, I unsubscribed when you left. I went, oh, thank you. And he went, no, no, no, I then resubscribed
Starting point is 00:12:01 when they announced that you'd left because you're really annoying. and then continues to pour the pint. Honestly, it was a pipe. I was like, what's going? I looked at you, Tommy. He didn't say anything to Tommy. No.
Starting point is 00:12:15 He really loved him. Yeah. He was just slandering you, and then we had to awkwardly carry on getting drinks at the bar after this guy was just... I didn't go because I thought it'd spit in my drink, to be honest with you. Welcome to the Ferrari Pannometer. Okay, so that last bit...
Starting point is 00:12:36 So I just said, welcome to the Ferrari Pianometer, which was supposed to be in the video. However, due to it, being a Ferrari video, clearly something had to go wrong. So I had to do it myself rather than using the voice change. It was working absolutely fine, and then we got here, did our rehearsal, and then it stopped working,
Starting point is 00:12:53 so we're like, of course the Ferrari video. But it's fine. Right, so this, again, was Tommy's idea. But I don't care, because I'm a Red Bull fan. So why don't you explain what we're about to get up to? Okay, so I've picked some not really highlights. Low lights. There was a lot to be fair.
Starting point is 00:13:12 It wasn't hard to find them. LeClair's time at Ferrari. And we're going to go through the painful moments one by one. And Matt is going to grade them on a painometer of 1 to 10. Of most pain. Now, we have had a rehearsal, but I have not looked at this because he was like, I want you to blind react. I was like, cool.
Starting point is 00:13:33 Okay. Right. We'll get into the first one, which is Bahrain, 2019. Something strange with the engine. No, you don't have to give me context. I know what happened. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But good start, good start.
Starting point is 00:13:51 So I was actually at this race. Yeah, I was in, I was in a grandstand, having a great time. I think I even tweeted. I was like, we're going to get bored of Charlotte Claire dominated races. I actually tweeted that. That was big regret. And, yes, he, DNF, well, not DNF, but he had a problem with the engine.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Yeah, he finished third. Finish third. His first win, I should have been there. And you could have been there. Does that make it worse that you would have witnessed this first victory? I don't lose any sleep over it because I'm a Red Bull fan. So that hurt a lot. I'm going to go with a solid nine.
Starting point is 00:14:25 That hit me straight through the heart. Charlotte Clare fans here. Is a nine about what we're saying here? Yeah. I'm sorry to all you guys. Yeah. Please don't. If there's empty seats.
Starting point is 00:14:38 after the interval, I don't know why. Okay. Okay, on to the next one. There's a lot of face palming. Yes, Monaco, 2021. This was him being in qualifying, taking part in the race, and then not even starting his home grand prix.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, cool, cool, cool, cool. I think I've gone too early with the nine, because I'm like, how does things hurt more? Yeah, this is, I think it might be an eight. because I could get you, I was like, oh, he didn't take part, so it didn't happen. You know what I mean? So at least I can sort of process that a little bit more. How much did it hurt you?
Starting point is 00:15:18 Not hugely. Not as much, I wonder why. No, I think it was fine because Max won, didn't he? So it was all good. Yeah, this was, well, this would have been one of the only races for I were actually good at that year. Yeah, move on. Let's go to the next one. Cool, cool, cool, cool.
Starting point is 00:15:32 More pain. Spain, 2022. Oh, God. So at this point, LeCleur would have been leading the championship, I think, still. The dream was very much alive. Yeah, oh, very alive. In fact, I seem to remember a lot of, oh,
Starting point is 00:15:50 Red Bull car failures happening all the time, Max DNFing from two races. And, yeah, then, Charler. I got cocky, okay? I got really two DNFs in the first three races. I'm like, it's done, isn't it? Australia, 37 points clear. And then, wow.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Boom. God. It's not going to go any lower than eight at any of these, is it really? Because it hurts a lot. I'm going to go with another... Maybe a seven because I was like, that's fine. They're still quickest. Like, they're still far.
Starting point is 00:16:21 I'm going to go to a seven. You'd rather be quick. None of these are nice. Let's put it that way. Monaco. Another Monaco. Strategy was on point on this one, wasn't it? A Ferrari Masterclass.
Starting point is 00:16:34 Yeah, yeah. I was actually at a mate's wedding. So I was watching this. I paid for like some VPN. and I was there, like, trying to see in the sun, and I was like, oh, God, was he in the pits? Is he in the pits? Okay. So, I mean, at this point, you know, it's all going wrong, isn't it?
Starting point is 00:16:51 Seven, I'm going to go with another seven. I think this was the first major, first of many major blunders where, yeah. I think he's already started to happen at this point. Yeah, but I think this is the first really high profile strategy error of them just being like, this was where he went into the pits right and was like, what are we doing? or something. I'm really enjoying the segment. Yeah. Really, really enjoying. Just reminding everyone, you know, about that.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Thank you for reminding. It's all right. I'm here for you. No, you're not. Oh. So the rest of the show is P1 with Tommy. Welcome to P1 with Tommy. Let's move on now swiftly, shall we? I think that's... Thank God it's over.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Oh, oh. But to more Ferrari despair. So this next next... segment. Some people know what we're about to talk about. Felipe Massa with the biggest stretch in the history of time. Ferrari had that desperate to win a title again. They're going back 15 odd years to get it. What can we do? What can we do? Come on. So for those that don't know, this is Felipe Massa in 2008. And he, he for some reason, well, I say for some reason, Bernie Ecclestone, the former boss of Formula One, likes to just say a lot of crap.
Starting point is 00:18:14 at a lot of different times. And he decided to say that essentially they knew about Crashgate. So this was when Nelson P.K. Jr., Fernando Alonzo's teammate at Renault just binned it on purpose for Alonzo to win the race, which I'm mad. And then there was massive scandal and whatnot. But Bernie Ecclestone coming out and saying that they knew about this, but the investigation was a year later. Yeah, so they found out a year.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Yeah, it's weird because they found out a year after. So the excuse, that was what we believed, that they found out a year after. So it was kind of this big scandal year later. And the problem is, when they have the FIA prize-giving ceremony and all that stuff, then it's done. Like, you can't go back on it. But then Bernie Eccleston dropping the bomb that they did know about it, there's obviously riled Maserat because he goes, well, you could have cancelled the race. I think Bernie even dropped the quote of, we thought about canceling.
Starting point is 00:19:12 the Singapore Grand Prix completely. Why would you say that? Which would have made Massa the champion? Imagine Massa just reading that. So I would have been world champion if you'd done this. Yeah. I can see why he would speak to the media and go, I'm a bit annoyed by this.
Starting point is 00:19:29 But actually looking to try and take a championship away from Hamilton, Mercedes fans, how do we feel about that? Because you imagine, like, oh, he should be an eight time and he's actually a six because Massa takes one. All right, I'll have that one. Thank you very much. Did I hear some Michael Schumacher fans out there, wooing? Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:19:46 Greatest of all time back in again. Yeah, exactly. So, yeah, it is, honestly, like, what is he doing? Like, he's genuinely... Is he thinking about it, or has he actually done it? I think he's working out how to kind of go about it. How do this? But he's been, like, sharing Insta stories of people going,
Starting point is 00:20:05 oh, yeah, Massa, the worthy 2008 champion and stuff. So he's going for it. But it's a stretch. I think if I could see how annoyed he'd be, if, well, I can see why he's annoyed, but it would be worse, I think, if he'd finished maybe second behind Alonzo, because Alonzo's win actually stood still. It counts as an Alonzo win. If he was second and he'd got enough points by Alonzo getting disqualified from the race, then fair, but... This man, Massa, by the way, left the pit lane with the fuel host and attached to his car. And he's like, nah, cancel it, cancel it. Yeah, we don't want to look back at the highlights of me for getting... to wait for that to be attached. It's good to know that Ferrari have learned from that all those years later. Thank God refueling's gone.
Starting point is 00:20:51 That's all I'll say. But yeah, if that had happened, I could see why. But they're not going to just cancel the result. And ironically, if they just got rid of the Renault, Hamilton would win by more points. That would be quite amusing, actually, if it just went. Well, actually, now you've lost the championship by three points. Yeah, so by way of Wu, who thinks Felipe has a point.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Wow. There were more Alpine fans than that. Right. This next one, oh. Oh. So if we had done more preparation, we'd have like crazy music at this point, but instead,
Starting point is 00:21:31 okay, so challenge Tommy. Right. Should we move the chair? Yeah, let's do it. I'm not challenging Tommy. It's an arm wrestle. One of you, You is challenging Tommy.
Starting point is 00:21:46 Right. So, shall I say the prize first? Yeah? Yeah, okay. So, up for grabs tonight. Shut up. Up for grabs tonight. This is the first time I've dealt with hecklers.
Starting point is 00:21:57 This is weird. Okay. So up for grabs tonight is a Renault. A Renault? A Renault? A reno. We're giving away a car. We're not giving away a car.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Signed by Daniel Ricardo and Nico Holkenberg. Yes. also from Tommy's garage. Do you want to pick your competitor? I feel like... This isn't about loves. This is competition. Right here, this man's got both arms up. Come on down or come on up.
Starting point is 00:22:29 Can we get a big round of applause? Oh hi, mum. I can see you with the lights on. Thanks for coming, Mum. I love when we were doing... I live when we were doing the rehearsals. He was like, don't pick someone right in the middle. And I was like, this guy. Okay, microphone.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Here we go. Yes, I've prepared for this. Good. Okay. Hello, sir. What's your name? Chris. Chris.
Starting point is 00:22:53 Yes. There we go. I should have pointed that in your face immediately. Please, and you are taking on Tom Bellingham for assigned. Renaudot hat. Can I get an ooh? Please take a seat, both of you. I don't know why.
Starting point is 00:23:05 You need this. So people can hear you. There we go. Right. Professionals. Okay. God, the lighting is tense, isn't it? This is tense.
Starting point is 00:23:13 That's not where the questions are. So we're doing like a... Little slaps. Yeah. All right, rock paper, scissors. Let's see who has the mental... Mental age. On three?
Starting point is 00:23:22 On three. One, two, three. Oh. On three. Let's go again. Let's go again. On three. You can tell Tommy's really on top of this.
Starting point is 00:23:35 One, two, three. That's two-nil. Well done. Here you go, mate. They're well... Okay, so how is this going to work? I'm the quiz master because I know nothing about Formula One. And it's going to be five questions each.
Starting point is 00:23:50 Five for Tommy. What was your name again? I'm so sorry, what was your name? Chris, that's a really easy... That's my dad's name. Hi Chris. My dad's here as well. Big shout out.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Yeah, big shout out to my mum and dad, and my sister and my girlfriend. Someone's going to have a go at me now for not shouting them out, but that's as far as we're going to go. Okay, so the questions. Yeah, five each. If Tommy, you get one wrong.
Starting point is 00:24:14 We pass it to Chris. Chris, if you get one, we pass it back to Tommy, and then we see it maybe a point, maybe not. No conferring in the audience, please. Tommy is in this acetya though, isn't he? This is the whole point. There's too much pressure now, I think. I mean, you've had both your hands up,
Starting point is 00:24:27 so that's a lot of confidence of can you beat Tommy. How much do you know about Formula One, I have interested? I've been watching this since 1996. Oh, same. Same. Same, same year. Have you met your match? Let's find out.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Okay. Question number one comes to Tommy. Oh, God. I was really lenient with Tommy questions, as you can imagine. Who, and no, audience, please, thank you. Who was the first ever British F1 World's Champion? Mike Hawthorne? Yeah, you got it right, yeah, okay, that's.
Starting point is 00:25:05 One-nil to Tommy, okay. Phew, I've got one, I'm happy. Chris. Let me just look at you right in the eyes. Chris. Which driver holds the record for the most consecutive victories in Formula One? I feel it's a Red Bull driver. You can't be, you can't do that. I can't do it. They do some game shows, don't they? They're like, you have to explain.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's neither of the drivers on your hat, okay? Okay. Especially one of them. Yeah. Oh. No Danny Rick Slander here, minus 12 points. Okay. I will say, um, I will say, um, Max Verstappen.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Who was it? That's all right, Chris. Don't worry about it. 1996 was it? Okay, I'm joking. I'm joking. I'm joking. I'm joking.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Thank you for coming up here. Thanks for coming to the show. Please come again. Right. Tommy. Question number two. If you want to get it wrong, actually, no, you're definitely getting this wrong.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Sorry. How many points did Max Verstappan score in 2020? If you get this right. Shut up. 2022? Oh, my word. Last year. How many points did he score?
Starting point is 00:26:19 Come on. Oh, I'm that. Three hundred. Wrong! Yes! Come on, Chris! I did this because I was like, you've got to get back into this. Right. So your guess now, please. Two minutes count. To the exact point.
Starting point is 00:26:32 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Four. Five hundred and fifty... Wait. Say it! Four. Four.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Yes, come on! I tried to make it subtle. It's one all. Sorry, Tommy. That's all. Oh dear, what is life? Okay. Chris, are you okay?
Starting point is 00:27:06 Yes. Good. Okay. At the 2005 US Grand Prix, how many cars lined up on the grid, Mr. 1996, man? Six. Yes, come on, Chris. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Best Grand Prix ever. Tommy, you are washed. Right. This one, this one, I think you were watching Formula One at this time. One Manuel Fanchier. won his last Formula One World Championship in which year? I mean, this isn't bad? 57.
